General Motors cleans out the garage Troubled automaker is selling vehicles from its 'Heritage Collection' General Motors is cleaning out the attic to sell some stuff at the auction house to raise some much needed cash. Around 250 vehicles from GM's "Heritage Collection" will be auctioned by Barrett-Jackson, with the first lots going on Jan. 13 in Scottsdale, Ariz., and the second hitting the block in April in West Palm Beach, Fla. Don't think that GM is parting with the family jewels to pay the mortgage. Though insiders can't recall such a big chunk of the collection being sold at once, 25 percent of the total, most of the vehicles are special show cars and one-of…

Buick and Opel to Share Design Buick Could Get Opel Design: Latest Strategy is Fluid, like GM's Future By Todd Lassa "Just before the Detroit Three presented their loan guarantee/bailout proposals to Congress, Motor Trend learned that General Motors would shift Opel's design language from Saturn to Buick. Now we know why." I suppose this would indeed be why we are getting the new Buick Regal in the U.S. instead of a new Saturn Aura. At anyrate, for Saturn, why were the names changed to begin with? Why was the Aura a G6 in drag and not the genuine German Opel? Will the Regal be dumbed down compared to the German engineered car it appears to be identical to? This …

Win the cities or lose the war Why GM must take back market share in America's urban centers Dateline: Europe Ceding Urban Areas The domestic automakers - GM in particular - have ceded urban areas focusing their efforts on the suburban and rural marketplace. America's large cities such as Boston, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles are largely responsible for establishing and setting societal trends, what's "hip and cool" in the culture. A demonstrated inability to generate product for and market that product to America's major cities portends significant problems for GM, especially in the medium and long term. An inability to reach these areas preven…

Linkity GM releases turbo upgrade kit for Solstice GXP, Sky Redline and HHR SS The Pontiac Solstice GXP, Saturn Sky Redline, and Chevrolet HHR SS are plenty of fun with 260 horsepower underfoot, and we can only imagine that the joy quotient increases as power improves. General Motors' performance division knows as much, and it's now offering an LNF Turbo Upgrade kit to kick its 2.0L turbo direct injection engine into gear. The kit consists of a new engine calibration and MAP sensors that will push your turbo four to 290 horsepower and up to 340 lb-ft of torque with the six-speed manual transmission (315 - 325 lb-ft with a slush box). The new factory turbo kit als…

GM May Shrink Pontiac Lineup to One Model From Six (Update1) Email | Print | A A A By Greg Bensinger Dec. 18 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp. peddled Pontiacs for years with the slogan “We Build Excitement.” To stay afloat, it’s producing fewer thrills -- and models. The company may shrink the Pontiac division to a single model from six following a drop in sales every year since 1999. “It might be just one model,” Mark LaNeve, GM’s North American sales chief, said in an interview. GM joins Chrysler LLC and Ford Motor Co. in trimming brands as U.S. sales sag amid the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression. GM has said it will run out of cash b…

I just noticed something strange yesterday. My local GMC-Pontiac-Buick store and the Cadillac-Hummer (no Saab) store are owned by the same dealer but in different locations about a mile apart. They have just combined all 5 franchises into the older GMC-Pontiac-Buick lot (which sits right next to a successful Lexus dealer). A Volkswagen dealer will move into the former Cadillac-Hummer property next to the Infiniti store (which is also owned by the GM dealer). The pylon sign hasn't been changed yet, but the dealer has put up crummy "Cadillac" and "Hummer" block letter signs. "Oldsmobile" can still be read on the window as you walk into the showroom. Now, I live in an…

General Motors has just revealed the plan it has submitted to Congress today, and the details show just how far the largest U.S. automaker is willing to go in order to secure bridge loans from the federal government. The plan includes selling Saab, possibly killing Saturn and scaling back Pontiac, as well as reducing dealers and shedding more workers, among other things. Here's the breakdown... Focus on "core brands": Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac Launch predominately high mileage, energy-efficient cars and crossovers Sell Saab, HUMMER Sell or kill Saturn Reduce Pontiac to a "niche" brand Trim dealerships from 6,450 to 4,700 Reopen ta…

Linkity GM delays Volt engine plant, car still on track General Motors has said that it won't allow ongoing financial hardships to put a damper on the Chevy Volt development program, but a recent announcement that its plant in Flint, Michigan may be delayed could have cause for some worry. The Flint plant is where the 1.4L four-cylinder engine that will be used as a range-extender in the Volt is scheduled to be built. This plant is also expected to assemble powerplants for the upcoming Chevy Cruze that will replace the aging Cobalt when it goes into production at GM's Lordstown, OH plant in April 2010 as a 2011 model. Automotive News Europe December 18, 2008 06:47 CET DETROIT (Reuters) -- General Motors and Chrysler LLC have reopened merger talks, as Chrysler owner Cerberus Capital Management LP has signaled a willingness to give away part of its ownership in the automaker, the Wall Street Journal reported. With cash running low at both companies, Cerberus took the initiative to restart discussions that sputtered just weeks ago, the paper said. The renewal of the talks could be a way for Cerberus to show Washington, which is weighing a $14 billion rescue package for GM and Chrysler, that it wants to cooperate in restructuring the industry, the paper said, citing people famili…

Is This Detroit's Last Winter? This is the thanks you get for creating the middle class, Henry. In the throes of the biggest auto swoon since 1931, the headmen of Detroit go hat in hand to Washington to try to keep their once mighty industry upright for a couple of months and are treated as if they had invented the four-wheel-drive subprime mortgage. AIG torpedoes the entire economy and gets a $150 billion handout; Citigroup takes risks no sane manufacturing company would even contemplate and is rewarded with a $20 billion federal bailout. Automotive News November 26, 2008 - 6:32 pm ET DETROIT -- General Motors is studying the idea of killing the Saab, Saturn and Pontiac brands as it seeks U.S. rescue loans, Bloomberg News reported today. Bloomberg cited unnamed sources. A GM spokesman declined comment, the news service said. The automaker is preparing to submit a detailed turnaround plan to Congress on Tuesday, followed by hearings next week in its quest for a federal loan to avert a cash shortage. GM already has said it may sell Hummer. GM's board will meet Sunday and Monday, both regularly scheduled meetings, to review the plan to be presented to Congress, Bloomberg said. Only a small porti…

WSJ - Saving Volvo and Saab One in every five cars sold in Sweden last year was a Volvo and Saab is the exclusive supplier to King Carl XVI Gustaf. So Sweden was never likely to abandon its two famous marques entirely to the mercies of parent companies Ford and General Motors. But while Thursday's promise of a 28 billion Swedish kronor ($3.44 billion) aid package offers Sweden's car-makers a lifeline, it may not be enough to ensure their long term survival. The Swedish car industry needs all the help it can get as the parent companies of Volvo and Saab look for a bailout. One in every five cars sold in Sweden last year was a Volvo. With the U.S. rescue plan for GM a…

From SmartMoney It looks like there may be some serious conditions attached to any TARP money that could be forthcoming. After reviewing the books over the weekend, this was leaked to the media. I personally believe that this may be the only way for GM to get itself back on track. While they may lose major market share, they can become profitable. GM could see their market share at 10% after a restructuring, but it's better to be smaller and profitable than to have 20% share right before you go out of business forever. I'd rather have a smaller, focused, profitable GM than no GM at all..

You know, the ads where they claim to be american car companies and try to convince everyone that it's okay to be anti-domestic. "You just keep doing what you do, and we'll keep building cars you want to buy." -- Honda Translates to: Just keep believing that Detroit is worthless, because we'll sell you a car instead. --or-- We're better off without Detroit anyway. Or, Detroit builds cars no one wants to buy. It's the over all tone that pisses me off. This is the kind of shady business I've bitched about for years. It seesk to benefit from Detroit's loss, as usual. I mean really; 60% of the country hates the automakers anyway and now it seems that these companies are…

When is the UAW going to $h! that turd out? I suppose he'll just go down with the ship. I love the last comment in the article: "“We’ve helped them before, but it seems like they always come back to us,” said Shane Colvard, chairman of Local 2164 in Bowling Green, Ky., where G.M. builds the Chevrolet Corvette sports car." This is precisely the mentality that got Detroit where they are. I hope you starve Mr. Colvard. If GM can't even get their own employee base in line, they're doomed. You see, in the "real world" Mr. Colvard would be escorted out for a comment like that to the media. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/04/business...?pagewanted=all …

This news may have a dramatic effect on holiday shopping as Americans pull back or cancel their Christmas spending. That could cause further economic problems for retailers that have already struggled in a soft retail market. Normally many companies file for bankruptcy in the beginning of the new year, after a failed holiday season. That number cund rise consideribly. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/articl...suW1jQD952IG000 They're stalling. Don't be too terribly shocked if they just "let the market decide" on this one friends. As we've all known for years, I think the White House has viewed "Detroit" more like a pesky mosquito that won't go away, and not a relevant concern for the country anymore. They're an afterthought for these bozos - and mainly because they probably don't pump near as much money into the political machine of Washington as they once did. Moreover, these people don't give a $h! about the working class, and I think they view the domestic auto industry as more or less a symbol of an "old s…

http://www.autoextremist.com/ December 12, 2008 It’s up to you Mr. President. By Peter M. De Lorenzo Detroit. The U.S. Senate late last night voted against passage of a bill to give an emergency bridge loan to the Detroit automakers – specifically GM and Chrysler - paving the way for the eventual collapse of the domestic automobile industry and sending this country’s already teetering financial situation to the brink of disaster. The inaction - a blatantly malicious display of placing political self-interests before the best interests of the nation – was orchestrated by Senators Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY), two men who are pushing “the Sout…

So in the end, the UAW puts the final nail in the coffin. It would be a fitting final chapter for GM who apparently will never be able to rid itself of the albatross. I suppose a dying animal will do anything to survive, including kill another. It is, however, the one consolation from this whole morass, which is the final demise of the UAW which will finally be gone no matter what the outcome of this attempt at legislation. Good riddance. *** Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the sticking point was the United Auto Workers' refusal to set a "date certain" to put employees at U.S. auto manufacturers at "parity pay" with U.S. employees at foreign automakers in …

Congress is about to approve a loan that is nothing more than a firebreak, it does not extinguish the fire. The loan will give us the time we need as a nation to wet down the roof and call in the water bombers, but the fire still burns and the smoke and embers are still falling all around us. The good news is, that the situation has spurred a great flood of creative thinking (even amongst the small minds in DC). Ideas with real merit are floating through the air like snowflakes in a blizzard, from how to finance the balance of the loans our domestics will require, to the (overdue) notion that the US needs to adopt a rational industrial policy to avoid crises like the o…

Two weeks ago Rick Wagoner flew to Washington on a corporate jet. This time the chief executive of General Motors Corp. made the trip in one of his company's black hybrid Chevrolet Malibu, driving part of the way. He periodically made calls on his cell phone while in the passenger seat and wore sunglasses to protect from the glare of a sunny day. Wagoner will be back in the spotlight Thursday…

it's true that some market analysts have taken a strong stance against the bailout. some are in favor, but mostly it is government officials, democrats and barack obama, leading the charge that governmental loans along with some kind of restructuring and a solid plan going forward for market prosperity are the way forward for automakers. for any kind of positive drumbeat going for the automakers getting any money, we have the democrats to thank really. most free market analysts look at GM as a loss. why? here's one topic that has been touched on but not been scrutinized enough. product acceptance, perception, and the problems GM and Ford have with selling thier cars in …

November 26, 2008 - 1:00 pm ET UPDATED: 11/26/08 1:19 p.m. EST DETROIT (Reuters) -- Shares of General Motors and Ford Motor Co. jumped today after Deutsche Bank said chances have improved for the struggling U.S. automakers to receive a government bailout. "There is growing concern about the risks to the U.S. economy that would be derived from inaction," Deutsche Bank analyst Rod Lache said in a research note. "The proximity of these bailout hearings to the Citigroup bailout may have also tipped the scales somewhat," Lache said, referring to the massive government rescue of the bank announced Sunday. Shares of GM, which hit a 70-year low of $1.70 last week, surg…

On of the largest political bloggers out there, Andrew Sullivan, posted this article from Peter Klein: Insinuating that if the domestic 3 were to fall, and they should fall, the transplants could pick up the slack. Yesterday afternoon I wrote a rebuttal to the piece and Andrew Sullivan posted it: Andrew Sullivan's blog gets an average of 200k hits per day. I've written many rebuttals to his posts, but this is the first time he has posted one of mine.

http://www.autoextremist.com/current/ November 26, 2008 Washington to Detroit: Drop Dead. By Peter M. De Lorenzo Detroit. The glee with which the Washington establishment - and every two-bit instant car “expert” who decided it was high time to weigh-in with his or her opinions - attacked Detroit and what’s left of the U.S. car industry last week was a sight to behold. Everyone from chief knucklehead Michael Moore to Neil Young (Neil Young?) got on the “Detroit Deserves to Die” bandwagon, adding to the chaos with their naively-crafted pop logic musings and “finger-snap” solutions. It was truly pathetic. Starting with the stunningly ill-informed members of the …

Rick Wagoner's 31-year career may fall victim to the mistakes of the industry and of his own making, even if General Motors Corp. survives. The GM chief executive officer prompted scrutiny of his record by asking for a government bailout to keep the Detroit automaker in business. Now, his departure may be a necessary condition of any federal rescue, business leaders and lawmakers say. "Management needs to be replaced," said Robert Crandall, former chairman and CEO of American Airlines parent AMR Corp. "The fact is that the management as a whole has had lots of opportunities to fix this. They haven't." Mr. Wagoner has run the world's largest automaker for the past…

Dear T Charlieville, You made the right choice when you put your confidence in General Motors, and we appreciate your past support. I want to assure you that we are making our best vehicles ever, and we have exciting plans for the future. But we need your help now. Simply put, we need you to join us to let Congress know that a bridge loan to help U.S. automakers also helps strengthen the U.S. economy and preserve millions of American jobs. Despite what you may be hearing, we are not asking Congress for a bailout but rather a loan that will be repaid. The U.S. economy is at a crossroads due to the worldwide credit crisis, and all Americans are feeling the effects of …

An Open Letter to G. Richard Wagoner, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, General Motors Corporation From Randal Charlton, Executive Director of TechTown, the Wayne State University Research and Technology Park – www.techtownwsu.org – in Detroit, one of Michigan’s 16 high technology business incubation and economic development parks November 21, 2008 Dear Mr. Wagoner: Congress has asked you and the rest of the Detroit auto industry to come back by December 2 with a plan that can help your companies survive as well as serve the interests of the taxpayers. Detroit was once the business heartbeat of America. Now, unfortunately, to some outside the state, it …

John Cortez Automotive News November 24, 2008 - 3:34 pm ET Dear Mr. Moore: Let me start by stating upfront that I'm a lifelong Michigander and a contract employee of General Motors. I should also add that, unlike many at GM, I have long been a fan of your work, the work of a man I had considered to be about truth, and truth-telling, even when it hurts, and hurts so bad it's funny in a pathetic sort of way. On "Larry King Live" last week, you didn't tell the truth, and it left me flabbergasted. In your defense, I think you did it out of ignorance, not malice. But it was an untruth nonetheless, and one that will have very damaging ramifications for Detroit and …

Rick And Alan Not Getting On The Bus From The Truth About Cars The planned cavalcade of chrome fuel-efficient American vehicles from Detroit to DC is “a great idea,” according to GM spokesfolks, but neither the General nor Ford will officially participate in the stunt. Suppliers, dealers and the UAW will make up the bulk of the spectacle, although there’s still a chance that Chrysler’s Bob Nardelli could join in the fun. “The whole grassroots caravan to Washington, D.C., effort we think is a great idea,” said GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson. “It’s just not something we are in a position to sponsor or manage.” You know, like everything else. “As for our mode of transport, …

By Jason Stein | for wheelbase communications November 23, 2008 In the world of automotive design, where each crease has a meaning and every crevice has a story, Wayne Cherry was a wiggle in a world of straight lines. In an era of pop-star obsessions over designers and their creations, General Motors’ former North American design boss was the anomaly. He was a Midwestern boy with a global outlook; a soft-spoken executive whose artwork spoke volumes. Not extravagant like current GM product czar Robert Lutz. Not a cult figure like Ford design whiz J Mays. And definitely not a conversation piece the way BMW’s lead designer Chris Bangle has been. Cherry alway…

I didn't know quite where to put this, so admins feel free to move it. I don't think GM knows how to play the game of Washington politics, and by not knowing has made a huge mistake. Yeah we all know they shouldn't have flown to DC in their corporate jets, we also all know they are not looking for a bailout, but instead are looking for a loan, but what I'm talking about transcends even that. What I'm talking about is this: GM is being outflanked by the Germans, Koreans, Japanese and very soon by the Chinese and Indians. What I mean by that is for every plant/site GM shuts down outside of Michigan, they lose their two US Senator's and their US Representative's VOTES, t…

I was just listening to some of Gettlefinger's testimony in front of congress. He took the same old tired position of how much the UAW "gave up" for the benefit of the automakers. I'd like for him to tell us how they actually contribute to the success of their employers. Just showing up at work every day doesn't cut it. After listening to his crap, I'm even more steadfast about one of the requirements for the $25M loan being the elimination of the UAW at these companies. Without this requirement I'd let these companies fend for themselves. Mulally's testimony is the only one who gives me confidence he has a plan for his company. Nardelli seems like he is uncomfortable i…

Things are moving along quite nicely with the development of the Chevy Volt. According to Bob Lutz, test mules of the extended-range electric vehicle are now being built atop the soon-to-be-released Chevy Cruze. This is a logical progression since the production Volt will share its Delta underpinnings with the new compact from General Motors when it finally goes on sale in 2010. Prior to these latest mules, the test cars used last-gen Malibu shells that Lutz and the team affectionately referred to as "MaliVolts." Predictably, Mr. Lutz praises the new Delta platform, and we have every reason to believe that it will be leaps and bounds better than its Cobalt forebear, just …

US carmaker asks Germany for €1 billion-plus and seeks funds in UK, Belgium and Sweden! John Revill Automotive News Europe November 24, 2008 06:01 CET General Motors Europe is reaching out beyond Germany in search of government help to avoid a liquidity crisis if its US parent goes bankrupt. Informal approaches are being made to governments in Poland, Belgium, Spain and the UK, Automotive News Europe has learned. GM has car assembly factories in all of the countries where it seeks aid. Last week, GM Europe's management met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to ask for more than €1 billion in loan guarantees to finance the development and assembly facili…

What are the odds of the GM leaders waking up and do something that would make a great impression on Washington and the rest of the country. When they go back to Washington drive the best new product and efficent product you have and even bring a few Future mules like a Volt. If Rick drove up and parked at the Capital steps in a Volt Mule that made it all the way from Detroit alone with a Cruze and a hand full of their best hybirds it would not only put it on Washington but it would show what GM is really doing to a uninformed public. Make a show of this a show of what really is going on. Leave the Jets and SUV's at home and show how GM is and will compete in the…

Will be interesting to see if there's anything to this rumor. We'll know Monday. Full thread Here's the first post from the 19th: Just came back from a meeting with a few other creditors and we were speaking about the auto parts suppliers. We obviously went on the GM subject and the few people I was talking said the filing is already signed and sitting on the desk. Without an immediate bailout, the filing will take place Monday Morning. This is a new source from me, but was mentioned by 3 people at my meeting. Just laying out there.

Richard Truett Automotive News November 22, 2008 - 12:23 am ET General Motors directors are considering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, the Wall Street Journal and Detroit television stations reported. According to local TV reports, GM's board was meeting late Friday night in the company's downtown Detroit headquarters and had added court protection to the list of actions that may be taken as the company's cash supplies dwindle and the prospects for immediate federal aid dim. The Journal attributed the information to people familiar with outside board members' thinking. The paper said such a move would put directors at odds with CEO Rick Wagoner, who has main…

Am listening to CSPAN today. A rep from NY asked "raise your hand if you flew here commercially" of course nobody did..."raise your hand if your going to sell your personal jet and fly home commercially", of course no hands raised. I know that would be kinda hard to do but it's the point. He continued on with "you flew in with a private jet then walk off it with a tin can". Another rep asked Wagoner if he was willing to work for $1 for '09. He said he had no thoughts on that at this time. Mullaley was asked the same thing and basically said the same thing. They just dug their graves. I'm sorry, but being in this type of mess I would've already planned on working for $1 …

GM can't be saved but Opel can Guido Reinking Automotive News Europe November 18, 2008 15:27 CET RUESSELSHEIM -- However many billions the U.S. government spends on the rescue of General Motors, everyone should understand in the meantime that this only postpones the demise of the American auto giant. The Detroit colossus has been heading toward the precipice for years. All efforts to halt its decline have failed. The financial crisis has now turned an upstream battle into a freefall. The crash is waiting at its end. The German federal government should be clear about this before it promises Opel, GM's German subsidiary, guarantees or loans. The issue now ha…

IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed. Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check. I love cars, American cars. I was born in Detroit, the son of an auto chief executive. In 1954, my dad, George Romney, was tapped…

Lets say GM gets $25,000,000,000 in taxpayer dollars as a bailout. What do they do with it thats any different than what they've been doing the last decade or so? It seems to me they're saying "Give us money or we die now" instead of presenting an "If you give us money, we'll do x,y and z in order to survive" argument.

On the very top of this weekend's WSJ, there's a Chrysler Pacific dashboard with a red slash through the steering wheel. It reads... BAIL OUT DETROIT? WRONG WAY, DO NOT ENTER Just Say No to Detroit Given the abysmal performance by Detroit's Big Three, it would be better to send each employee a check than to waste it on a bailout, says David Yermack. Before Michael Moore became famous for documentaries like "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Sicko," his first big success came in 1989 with "Roger and Me." In that film, Mr. Moore followed General Motors chairman and chief executive Roger Smith with a camera crew, asking him why the company was closing plants and producin…

In america, it used to be considered good business for corporations to take care of their employees, contribute to the community and have pride in what they produce and how they produce it. This sense of pride then carried over into the workers as they bought goods and services offered by their fellow country men, not only because they had a vested stake in the success of their society, but also because those goods and services were the best in the world. Fast forward to today, where Wall Street calls the shots and everything at a corporation boils down to profit and sound cost structure. It doesn't matter if the employees are sick or dying. It doesn't matter if the com…
