Found this on Autoblog. I am not sure how good this is but I was just thinking the other day I wish they just had Bob around to tell them they are doing something stupid once in a while. Seem sto the story Dan Akerson wants him back but the Goverment does not want him back [go figure]. Well I hope GM can get him in to help sort out the new product and make sure they don't screw it up. I would like him to take Mark Reuss and really teach him all he knows. It is refreshing to see someone like Akerson show that he needs help with product. There may be hope for him yet and it is so sad the Goverment is showing that they are inept as usual. God can only hope their idea o…

Desperate Ad Wars GM Fights back at Volkswagen and Chrysler Success February 15th, 2010 Op Ed - Drew Dowdell - Chief Editor, CheersandGears.com The Wall Street Journal yesterday noted that GM's marketing chief, Joel Ewanick, acknowledged that Chrysler and Volkswagen had won "the buzz war" during the Superbowl last week with their "Imported from Detroit" and Mini-Darth Vader ads respectively. Not one to simply acknowledge defeat, Ewanick sent an email back to the crew manning the GM Marketing Mothership to start buying up keywords on Google's marketing system. The idea being if someone searched for "Imported from Detroit" on Google, instead of getting the Eminem…

GM's Powetrain Chief Resigns William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 2, 2011 Jamie Hresko, General Motor's powertrain chief stepped down on Monday. GM Spokeswoman Katie McBride said on Tuesday, Hresko stepped down "to pursue other opportunities" after 28 years at GM. Hersko's departure comes about a month after CEO Dan Akerson moved Tom Stephens who was overseeing product-development to become GM's new Chief Technical Officer. Akerson gave Mary Barra, a manufacturing engineer Stephen's old job. A person close to the situation states, that it was Hresko's own decision and not a management shakeup. US Treasury Plans For Early Sale Of GM Shares William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 27, 2011 The US government is planning to sell off the remaining share of GM it owns rather than wait for the stock price to get higher to max out the investment. Austan Goolsbee, the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers spoke at a breakfast with reporters. "The writing is clearly on the wall that the government is getting out of the GM position. The government never wanted to be in the business of being majority shareholder of GM. It was only to prevent a wider spillover, negative event on the economy. So we're trying to get out of that," s…

General Motors' too General Website A Critique January 12th, 2011 Paul Guastella - Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com Almost anyone looking to make a major purchase these days will at least do a bit of research online. With so many things to consider when purchasing a new vehicle, a website is a vital source of information to a consumer. A positive web experience will definitely make an impression on the visitor. Conversely, so will a negative experience. This is a chance a manufacturer has to lure a consumer towards their product and hopefully into their showroom. GM knows this and has their websites packed with information. However, if a customer is shopping…

GM's diesel for North America: It needs a good name GM's 2.9 liter V6 Clean Diesel for Europe September 29th - By Drew Dowdell On Monday, GM Vice Chairman Tom Stephens said at an energy efficiency conference that GM would release a diesel powered car for sale in the U.S. sometime in the future. Vague words at best, but still it managed to perk the ears of those of us who love torque. One of the constant problems with diesel power in the U.S. has been how to market it as something "special" compared to an every day gasoline engine. The word "diesel" pulls along as much baggage as the semi-trailers it powers. As the discussion about diesels increases over the next…

In Indianapolis, It's Autoworkers versus Autoworkers The Atlantic GM's bankruptcy was structured as something called a 363 sale, in which you create a new company which buys the assets you want the reorganized firm to keep, and leave the remaining assets in the old company, which then tries to sell them for whatever they're worth and gives creditors the money. Needless to say, the assets left inside the old company are often not as valuable as the ones the company keeps--they may have little value at all. So when "Old GM" found a buyer for its Indianapolis stamping plant, that was a happy piece of news; if it's not sold, the plant will be shut down in September of nex…

Government Motors no more An apology is due to Barack Obama: his takeover of GM could have gone horribly wrong, but it has not AMERICANS expect much from their president, but they do not think he should run car companies. Fortunately, Barack Obama agrees. This week the American government moved closer to getting rid of its stake in General Motors (GM) when the recently ex-bankrupt firm filed to offer its shares once more to the public. Once a symbol of American prosperity, GM collapsed into the government’s arms last summer. Years of poor management and grabby unions had left it in wretched shape. Efforts to reform came too late. When the recession hit, demand for car…

GM prepares its getaway The Economist ED WHITACRE, a former head of AT&T who took over the reins at General Motors last December and who yesterday announced his own imminent departure, deserves a small round of applause for what he has achieved. Just over a year ago, GM was taking its first faltering steps on the road to recovery, as it emerged from its government-orchestrated “quick-rinse” bankruptcy. But despite shedding debt, dropping several brands, shrinking its bloated dealer network, cutting jobs and securing concessions from those workers who remained, there were still plenty of sceptics. Could a company that had lost $88 billion in the four years to 2009,…

Health tab to soar at GM Health care costs at General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. will continue to rise at an alarming rate and are likely to spark a showdown with the United Auto Workers during upcoming contract talks, according to a new report released Monday by the respected credit-rating firm Fitch Inc. Fitch looked at cash costs for health care at both GM and Ford and concluded that concessions made by the UAW in 2005 have not been enough to offset inflation-driven increases in health care spending, production cuts and the flow-back of workers from both automakers' former parts subsidiaries. Ford will see some modest gains as a result of its blue-collar buyou…

GM (Finally) Makes a Profit, But Some Worries Remain The Atlantic A year after the bailouts that I, among others, opposed, General Motors has announced its first real profit--$1 billion in positive cash flow, and $865 million in net income. At this pace, GM may emerge from bankruptcy and go public by the end of the year, which will allow the government to recoup some of its investment. This is great news for taxpayers, and for GM employees. The company didn't just achieve the profit by cutting costs, but also by improving the revenue side. However, there are still some dark spots on the record: 1. GM achieved its profits at a time when the number one Japanese carma…

In this day and age of big goverment here is the latest we are facing in Ohio. Senate bill 204 is proposing that would let GM dealers sell other makes and modelin in their show rooms. It also would prevent independent repair shops and private owners from buying GM parts to repair thier own cars. Read on to the story below. General Motors is launching an ad campaign in Ohio to argue that pending legislation there could hurt GM's turnaround. General Motors says the bill, SB 204, which the Ohio Senate is considering next week, would allow auto dealers to sell foreign-made vehicles on the same dealer lots with GM cars and trucks; would prohibit GM from selling its auto…

Was on auto row today and noticed that the Pontiac sign on my local dealer's building here north of LA has been covered up. The GM pylon sign out front still has "Pontiac" but will likely be replaced by "Cadillac" as the dealer has replaced his Cadillac-only store with Volkswagen(!) and has moved Cadillac in with Buick/GMC. Interestingly, the HUMMER sign at the same Buick/GMC dealership has not been covered up/removed yet despite the lack of new inventory. The Saturn dealer down the street still has his sign up but no new inventory. What's going on in your town?

This is from the Wall Street Journal-Copyright Dow Jones KANSAS CITY, Kan.—Starting Jan. 4, General Motors Co. plans to do something unprecedented in the U.S. car industry: It will run its assembly line here around the clock on a permanent basis. While common in other industries, not even car-efficiency benchmark Toyota Motor Corp. operates its plants routinely with more than two shifts. Car-assembly lines need too much scheduled maintenance and restocking for such intensive production to make sense, many industry experts say. The Kansas City plant launched the redesigned 2010 Buick Lacrosse, left, which is a candidate for the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award.…

By Bernie Woodall DETROIT (Reuters) - The last time General Motors had a plain-talking Texan on its board of directors who was critical of the way the automaker did business, GM sent Ross Perot packing. Perot of Dallas said he hopes that Ed Whitacre of San Antonio won't run into the institutional stonewalling the billionaire investor faced in the mid-1980s when, as a member of GM's board, he challenged then-CEO and chairman Roger B. You probably know that Tiger Woods is a Buick guy. And why shouldn't he be a Buick guy as General Motors had him under contract to promote Buick for ten years for 70 million dollars. That's probably why Tiger loved every Buick made over the last decade in all of those Buick commercials. But when GM hit the skids early this year it dumped Woods a year early from the 10-year contract. So here's the strange part. The smoking gun recently published Tiger's police report from the accident ( http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2009/1202092woods1.html ) and it turns out that the Black Cadillac Escalade belongs to General Motors. OK, it is actually titled to a promot…

Henderson to step down Details are just now coming that General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson will step down from his post, and Ed Whitacre will act as interim CEO. Henderson took over the CEO spot when the federal government gave his predecessor, Rick Wagoner, walking papers. Fritz Henderson was undoubtedly part of the discussions involving the sale of the HUMMER brand, though it's unlikely that this will have an impact on an eventual sale. Late last week we found out GM's attempt to sell the SAAB brand had fallen through, similar to the Saturn deal fallout. Ed Whitacre taking over as interm CEO. Repaying American and Canadian tax payers as soo…

Richards replaces Susan Docherty, who was appointed General Motors vice president, U.S. sales, in October. “Michael is an automotive industry veteran who brings extensive experience in both marketing and sales,” Lutz said. “We are confident he will build on the positive momentum Buick GMC has with the 2010 Buick LaCrosse and GMC Terrain, as well as the upcoming Buick Regal.” Richards brings a diverse automotive background to Buick GMC. He was most recently vice president of marketing and sales for the glob…

David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau Washington -- Detroit's Big Three automakers came closer than America realized to becoming the Big Two. General Motors Corp. ended merger talks with Chrysler LLC in November 2008 to focus on getting emergency federal aid, but Chrysler continued to believe a tie-up with GM was its best chance for survival. In April, as both automakers were surviving on government aid and fighting bankruptcy, Obama administration officials spent two weeks working on a plan for GM to acquire Chrysler's best assets and keep the doors open on a third of its factories. Some members of President Barack Obama's auto task force saw it as a f…

WARREN, MICHIGAN - Like everybody else working for General Motors, Mark Reuss, the vice president for global vehicle engineering is happy Opel is not going to be sold. Meanwhile, he's changing the GM plan from his predecessor, Jim Queen's, global product development strategy. Under Queen, each region, or "global engineering center," had permanent responsibility for a specific set of products. Russelsheim, Germany, Opel's headquarters, pretty much owned the Epsilon/Epsilon II front-drive midsize platform, for example, while small cars were done at GM-Daewoo in South Korea and large trucks, SUVs and the Corvette were developed in Michigan. "I'll never do that because each …

GM Orphans Up for Adoption November 23, 2009 General Motors last week began sending out 1.8 million pieces of direct mail to what the GM logo - 119.JPG automaker calls its "free-agent customers" -- customers orphaned by the wind-down of Pontiac and Saturn and the proposed sell-off of Hummer and Saab. Impressed by the overall design, Virgil was ultimately sold on the cars' easy handling. After owning nearly 40 cars in his lifetime, he follows the philosophy that if you want something, get it. GM is going in this direction in a big way, that is a hint for you C&G. The days when corporate communications meant pushing out information to the public are numbered. As social media continues to permeate consumer culture, companies are trying to learn how to engage consumers in two-way conversations through blogs, Twitter, Facebook and other tools. “A customer is a precious thing. Dan Strumpf / Associated Press You fell in love with that $22,000 Chevy Malibu because of its color, style and price. After driving it home, you realize it's not what you wanted. Maybe it's the way it handles on the highway, the location of the cup holders or the shape of the seats. Don't worry. Bring it back for a refund, no questions asked, says GM's Chairman and new TV pitchman Edward Whitacre Jr. But is it really as easy as returning an ill-fitting shirt to Macy's? As with any deal, it's a good idea to read the fine print. As your love affair with the new car turns to hate, you'll need to drive very carefully and make sure to limit how many miles you put on …

GM - Saturn - Penske deal is DEAD! Today we learned that Penske Automotive Group (PAG) has decided to terminate discussions with General Motors to acquire Saturn. This is very disappointing news and comes after months of hard work by hundreds of dedicated employees and Saturn retailers who tried to make the new Saturn a reality. PAG's announcement explained that their decision was not based on interactions with GM or Saturn retailers; rather it was because of the inability to source new products beyond what it had asked GM to build on contract. As a result of PAG's decision, we will be winding down the Saturn brand and dealership network, in accordance with the wind-…

GM Confirms the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Is a Go Robert Dillman, September 28th, 2009 Story Link The fifth generation Camaro is currently flying off the showroom floors and perspective buyers have a few model choices when it comes to decision time. There are the LT and LS models with respectable V6 engines or the supped-up SS variant with a crowd-pleasing 6.2-liter V8. However, there is still one Camaro we have all been waiting for, and now GM is saying (again) that we will get it. During the Frankfurt Motor Show, representatives from General Motors confirmed suspicions of the Camaro Z28 being built and sold sometime in late 2011. Not very convenient co…

DETROIT (Fortune) -- If you want to understand how the old General Motors stumbled for 30 years until it collapsed into bankruptcy, consider the story of GoFast. GoFast was a program started in 2000 by Rick Wagoner, then the company's president (and later CEO), to untangle bureaucracy. The idea was simple: When negotiations over an issue reached an impasse, all the interested parties would be put together in one room until they agreed on a decision. Human resources was assigned to spread GoFast through the company. It trained GoFast coaches, arranged thousands of GoFast workshops, staged GoFast feedback sessions, and distributed GoFast coffee mugs. At one point, GM c…

As I said on another blog, in my area I have seen 4 Ford ads in 2 days promoting their Taurus SHO sedan. What does GM have to offer against it? The Pontiac G8 is no more... and it was RWD. (Which I prefer) The new Buicks are out of the price range. The Malibu and Impalas are a joke. All the SS's are dead.... Chrysler still has the Charger, as a sedan. So I say again, what does the General offer as a performance SEDAN? Don't say the Camaro, because in your wettest dream, that is not a sedan. In order to stay in the market, you have to compete ---- apples to apples! An old latin saying, QUO VADIS, GM ????????

Established GM Reputation for Safety Standards *brochure from 1974 Cadillac with Air Restraint System. GM was the first to offer airbags* With all the negative press that has circulated about General Motors before and during its bankruptcy proceedings, customers should be aware that although financially troubled, GM is a recognized leader in car safety advances. The company pioneered the development of the now ubiquitous concrete barriers on national highways and was the first carmaker to install rear turn signals as standard equipment. Some of GM's safety innovations are obvious, while others are more subtle. For instance, the company uses Event Data Recor…

By TOM KRISHER (AP) – 1 hour ago DETROIT — Behind GM's hesitation to sell its unprofitable car business in Europe lies a Cold War fear: American technology will fall into Russian hands. It's among the main reasons why General Motors Co. has balked at finishing a deal to sell its Opel unit to a group led by Canadian auto parts maker Magna International Inc. and Russia's state-owned Sberbank. GM announced the tentative deal with Magna in May at a time when it was desperately trying to avoid bankruptcy protection. But now, after exiting Chapter 11 in better financial shape and encouraged by signs of better sales, the Detroit-based automaker is second-guessing the dea…

An assessment on whether to start exclusive talks to buy German-based Opel had been expected at the weekend. The race to control Opel is between the Canadian component manufacturer Magna and Belgian financial group RHJ. DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Co. will mark its first serious foray into the U.S. premium compact-car segment early next decade when it launches a compact Buick, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said Friday. The move will be a virtually untested venture for Detroit, where small cars have long been synonymous with entry-level, lower-budget offerings. It is a sign of things to come for the U.S. auto industry as stricter fuel-economy regulations take hold and force car makers to turn out smaller, more fuel- efficient cars. GM has sold compact Buicks in the past, but not with the features, upscale design and higher price point planned for Buick, Lutz said. He said GM aims…

Let's put aside emotional attachments to historically illustrious brands for a second. Let's also put aside the complications of labor contracts, dealership commitments and various fiefdoms within the General's camp. Let's simply ask where we want to be in four years... I hope for a GM with no badge engineered products, half as many models and one third as many (US) brands tapping its engineering, design, financial, logistics and advertising resources makes pretty good sense. I also hope that this trimmer and focused GM will also be one which has regained technological and qualitative leadership over the rest of the world. But hope is not a strategy. So, this is what …
