Nov. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Derivatives traders are increasing bets that General Motors Corp. may follow Delphi Corp. and Delta Air Lines Inc. into bankruptcy after the disclosure of accounting errors and four straight quarters of losses. Traders last week demanded upfront payments in addition to annual premiums for derivatives contracts that protect owners of the Detroit-based company's debt should it miss a payment or declare bankruptcy. By doing so, traders relegated GM to the same status as Delphi and Delta just before those companies defaulted. GM, the world's biggest automaker, is losing U.S. market share to Asian rivals such as Toyota Motor Corp. and is …

Toyota, DaimlerChrysler, and Nissan-Renault are the only auto companies with enough money to buy a faltering GM. VW is about broke, Ford is in the red, BMW and Honda are too small. Here's my prediction...DCX. Zetsche takes over the helm...merges Mercedes, Chrysler and GM into a global juggernaut and moves the company headquarters to Detroit, so as to appease Americans. They'll probably get rid of some overlapping brands for N.A. GM has too many valuable assets around the world like Holden, Daewoo, Chevrolet, and Cadillac, and Opel. It's the largest automaker in China. GM will never disappear. Before they would go into a bankruptcy, I think the GM bra…

I only ask this question, if GM declares, only for the sole purposes of erasing their pensions debts and labor liabilities, will you ever buy a GM again? what do you think the general public will think? Will it hurt GM's long term sales to declare bankruptcy?

By: Jamie LaReau Automotive News DETROIT -- General Motors is starting a national incentive program to run through Jan. 3 despite claims that it would hold to its value pricing strategy. The program, called GM Red Tag Event, starts Monday, Nov. 14, auto dealers say. A GM spokeswoman declined to comment on Friday, Nov. 11. Under the program customers can get any 2005 or 2006 Buick, Pontiac, GMC or Chevrolet car or light truck at the supplier price plus $100, several dealers say. The exceptions to the sale are the Pontiac Solstice, Chevrolet Corvette and new Buick Lucerne, they say. The supplier price is the price offered to employees of GM suppliers. For example…

I got some bonus coupons in the mail this week, so I thought that I would take some time and investigate what the General had to offer as a suitable replacement for my '00 Astro LT AWD vehicle, since they have stopped making Astro's. Mind you, there is nothing wrong with mine now except 92,000 miles, but it is lacking in some state-of-the-art features that we would like to have. I spent time in depth at 3 dealerships. Looked at the HHR, Uplander, Equinox, Trailblazer, an Envoy XUV, and a PT Cruiser. My first, general overall impression ---- the General has forgotten that vehicles are primarily supposed to be people-movers and cargo-haulers, not rolling juke-box …

From TCC GM's vice chairman set out to set the record straight on a variety of issues following the Opel reveal on Tuesday. For one thing, he told reporters, the automaker's new rear-drive Zeta platform "is not dead or cancelled." Well, not exactly. The original version was, indeed, scrapped a few months back because "we did a lot of not-smart things…that didn't make business sense. We accepted the delay." As originally planned, GM's Australian subsidiary, Holden, will play the lead in developing the revised Zeta platform. But it is less and less likely that it will be able to export cars based on Zeta, at least to the United States.…

(NYSE:GM - news) fell more than 6 percent on Thursday, spiraling to a 23-year low, after Banc of America Securities warned of an increased risk of bankruptcy at the financially struggling auto giant. The stock's decline -- which could add to pressure on Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner to launch a more aggressive revival plan for the automaker -- also came after it said late on Wednesday that it had overstated financial results for 2001 by as much as $400 million. GM said the accounting error stemmed from the way it booked credits from…

Big 3 turn to rebates again to jolt sales lag

Detroit's carmakers are raising discounts again to steer consumers back to showrooms after paring incentives in October and watching sales tumble. General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. added rebates of $500 to $1,000 on select 2005 and 2006 models. DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group added $1,000 cash rebates on most Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep products earlier this week. The latest moves reflect a softening market after a blockbuster summer, as well as consumer concerns over higher gas prices and rising energy costs. "Don't count on much of a rebound for November or December," Merrill Lynch analyst John Casesa said in a report th…

Ford And Wagoner's GM Battle For Top Sales Spot

NEW YORK - The beleaguered General Motors has been wading through huge losses and dismal sales statistics this year. So there must have been a few feeble high-fives and pats on the back in the boardroom, with the news that Chevrolet is set to be nation's best-selling car brand at the end of the year. What must really get their spirits up: Chevy is set to snatch the title away from rival and the U.S.' No. 1 carmaker, Ford Motor. It'll apparently be the first time in 18 years that GM's Chief Executive G. Richard Wagoner Jr. doesn’t find, for a full year, his company playing second fiddle to Bill Ford Jr. and his empire at One America Road. For the fi…

GM Rushes to Meet Huge Demand for Solstice Date Posted 11-03-2005 PONTIAC, Michigan — General Motors said it will hike production of the 2006 Pontiac Solstice by adding a third shift at its plant in Wilmington, Delaware. Even though deliveries to customers started just three months ago, Pontiac dealers can't keep up with demand for the Solstice, one of the few bright spots at GM. I think we need one, tidy little thread in which we can succinctly state all the possible outcomes of this Delphi vs. UAW debacle going on right now. The reason being, I think that we can use our information to deduce all the possible ways that this will affect GM. Only a few rules I want to mention: - Don't get into a big pissing match/flame war here. There are plenty of other threads where you can have fightin' words. - Try and keep theories as simple and easy to comprehend as possible. Not all of us are business majors. - Even if you think your theory is stupid or implausible (e.g: the UAW accepts Delphi's $9/hour offer), chime in anyway. The more d…

The UAW's rank and file is expected to ratify the plan to shift some health insurance and prescription drug costs onto retirees and active workers. If so, GM's after-tax savings would total $1 billion a year. That's not chump change, but it won't be enough to restore GM's profits. Tracinda recently disclosed that it had boosted its stake in GM to 9.9 percent, after U.S. antitrust authorities said they would not oppose a plan by Tracinda, Kerkorian's investment arm, to increase its stake to that level. The plans also include the possibility of Tracinda seeking a seat on the automaker&…

I've been thinking about this and wanted to start a thread about it because it's so unbelieveable this practice still exists and the US has done nothing about it. Just how much do the tarriffs increase the average price of a Cavalier or Corvette, since I know those are about the only American cars that sell in Japan. This is probably the most backhanded thing any company can do, not because Japan Inc are selling so extraordinarily well, but because of all the other pressures in addition to this ridiculous form of trade GM must follow in Japan. So if anyone knows what the real price difference becomes, can they speak up about it? Does this make anyone else as mad…

GM, CEO says incentives were good but have to end

The leaders of General Motors and Ford say this summer's employee discount incentives worked well, but automakers can't continue offering huge discounts. Ford chief executive Bill Ford says such incentives aren't healthy for the industry and aren't sustainable. GM's Rick Wagoner says he doesn't regret GM's starting the incentive war in June but says it hurt profits and helped Asian automakers, which typically have lower incentives. Incentives have gone as high as $4,500 per vehicle or more. A Merrill Lynch analyst says the average incentive in September was $2,600 per vehicle, but $1,600 for Asian brands.

http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0.../A01-356532.htm Granted, this is good news but GM should have further negotiated with the UAW to put current workers on the same health care program as their white collar staff. Yes this deal is historic and probably very tough though not far enough. But that might have been out of scope of the negotiations. They did not go far enough.

Other news This is interesting because GMAC is GM's cash-flow darling. There's a reason why GM hasn't divested itself from GMAC earlier than this: it's because GMAC brings in big money to GM's bottom line. You remove this, then you'd better be pretty confident you can make money selling cars. If GM makes this move, then they better have the rest of the ship in tight shape.. While it's nice to see that Delphi's bankrupcty isn't going to cost them a full …

Well, I remember reading throught pontiac's history according to, of course, pontiac.com and I remember reading that in like 1937 or so... pontiac used a new slogan "Built to Last 100,000 Miles" and "The most beautiful things on wheels" and also in 1932 Pontiac, although it was a fairly new brand sales rose 50% with usage of advertising campaigns targeting women... the 60's were the best years for GM... GM had vehicles that women wanted, and guys could impress a woman with. excuse my quote but like 2pac said "N**ga's want what the B**ches want" so market things for women... make a car that a girl would like to get p…

A fresh Perspective on GM and the auto industry http://www.321gold.com/editorials/shedlock...lock101405.html MarketWatch is reporting "Ford's SUV Sales Halved in September": "Ford Motor Co. reported Monday that sales of its traditional SUVs plunged 51% in September, as consumers continued their mass exodus from the thirstiest vehicles on the road amid record gasoline prices. "Overall, Ford turned in a 19% decline in U.S. sales last month, to 228,157 cars and trucks. Crossover and passenger car sales actually improved, but not nearly enough to make up for the steep decline of its bulkier SUVs. "Sales of the Ford Explorer and Expedi…

Detroit - Struggling automaker General Motors said on Tuesday it aims to save up to $1 billion a year by reorganising its regional design and engineering structure into a single, global operation. "We will have one single, global design and engineering budget," GM vice chairman Bob Lutz told reporters at a luncheon sponsored by the Automotive Press Association. The world's largest automaker is racing to cut costs after having lost more than $1.2 billion in the first six months of 2005. It is currently in negotiations with its union to help reduce its health care and pension costs, and is also working to limit the negative repercussions of…

The news of Delphi's bankruptcy filing may be just another piece of business news to those who don't live around these parts, or for those who don't have a vested interest in the U.S. auto industry, but the sad fact of the matter is that this development is just the tip of the iceberg in a fundamental shift that not only threatens to decimate the U.S. auto industry, it's one that will ultimately affect this nation's economy - no matter where you live or what you do. Automotive News / October 14, 2005 http://www.autonews.com/news.cms?newsId=13570 DETROIT --- The United Auto Workers said Friday it might be close to an agreement with General Motors on benefits concessions. UAW spokesman Paul Krell said that the UAW had notified locals by e-mail that an agreement is possible. A source inside GM says it is "very confident" but added that the automaker could impose unilateral benefits cuts this week if talks fail. Krell said GM has not raised the possibility of unilateral cuts in talks. A spokesman for GM declined comment.

I have a question, What is the benefits of RWD over FWD? We went to FWD because of better traction and control, so why go back to RWD? Also, any other ideas would be great to hear. Our presentation has to be lenghted about 3 minutes. So we take all ideas into consideration. If you want to know what ideas we u…

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Deciphering Standard & Poor's ratings reports on General Motors Corp. (GM) is becoming more and more like reading Federal Reserve meeting minutes and speeches. Just as bond investors examine the Fed's language with a fine-toothed comb to find the slightest hint of a change in the bank's interest-rate policy, so have investors picked over S&P analyst Scott Sprinzen's most recent report on General Motors. They're grasping for clues as to what might happen to the legendary auto maker and its financing arm General Motors Acceptance Corp. (GMA.XX) now that GM is mired in even more problems since auto supplier Delphi Corp. …

This just into C&G: Delphi is now in front of the Bankruptcy board and has made it their very first mention and note that they want new contract negotiations with the UAW to happen starting next week, with a new agreement coming to pass before the end of '06. General Motors would not say much, except Mr. Lutz stating that General Motors plans to produce 85% of their content in North America, however General Motors as a company were not the ones to mandate that, giving heavy speculation that it is the Unions job to meet wage concessions with the worlds #1 automaker. More into C&G as we get it!

My question is "How many more body blows can GM take?" GM paid approximately $2.4 billion for 20% of Fiat Auto and spent another $2.0 billion to cancel Fiat's put. That's $4.4 billion of cash expended for what in the end was a bit of diesel engine technology. Essentially a loss of $4.4 billion. GM paid approximately $1.4 billion for a 20% stake in Fuji Heavy Industries (maker of Subaru). It then sold 8.7% of its stake to Toyota for $315 million, implying the remainder (to be sold at market prices back to Fuji for retiring) is valued at around $408 million. This would amount to about a $677 million loss on GM'…

"GM is pushing very hard on fuel cells," Fronk told a conference in London. "We need to solve issues in performance, cost and durability," he said. I guess the extra billions of dollars that Toyota make by raising the price is just a painful side affect that they have to bear. Can you think of another business lie in this proportion? Unfortunately, our media seems to play into this propaganda.
