Why It Is Time for Rick Wagoner to Go Peter Morici University of Maryland Last week we learned that mistakes in GM accounting raised its 2005 losses above $10 billion. That is well over $5000 per vehicle. With Toyota earning money on its cars, GM’s disadvantage vis-à-vis Toyota must be in the range of $7000 per vehicle. Quite simply, GM has higher costs than Toyota, and Toyota can fetch higher prices for its durable vehicles than Rick Wagoner can command for his more trouble ridden contraptions. On the cost side, all the propaganda Rick Wagoner has been flinging about, just like the company accounts, does not add up. Repeatedly, GM officials have pointed to health…

Full Article: Changes To Come - Yahoo Excerpt from Article: According to a manufacturer source, NASCAR officials have floated one solution to the apparent problem to the series' manufacturers. It involves changing the cars that race in the series from the current models being run in the Nextel Cup Series to smaller, sportier ones. The current Busch Series cars are slightly smaller versions of their Nextel Cup cousins. In the past, the Busch Series used makes of cars not used in the Cup series, as well as V-6 engines instead of Cup V-8s, but now the cars used in the two series are more alike. If the two series ran cars that differed more from each other, it would grea…

GM (Research) announced an agreement with the United Auto Workers union Wednesday, although it did not give the details of the offer extended to all 113,000 U.S. hourly employees. GM's rocky ride The tragedy of General Motors The Detroit giant is a weird, scarred combination: a carmaker doing poorly, and an insurance company engulfed by its obligations. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2501639 Detestable import fanboys having a field day over Bob Lutz's GM deprecating comments. Back in 2002, Bob Lutz came out with that "apology" campaign in newspapers, wherein GM essentially said that its past products were $h! but consumers should give it a new look because the new GM is changed. So I actually bought into to that and convinced my family to get a CTS at the time. 4 years later, it looks like we've come back full circle. "Just wait until you see our new products just around the corner, they're nothing like the junk we peddled in the past." The spin is exactly the same: in the past we suck…

You guys should know what a backer of GM I am. I have never owned anything but. Christ, I started this site 6 years ago to defend them in the media. But they have really pissed me off now. Here's a warning to anyone looking at purchasing a G6, DO NOT BUY THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF UNLESS YOU LIKE SQUEAKS, RATTLES AND OTHER ANNOYING NOISES. GM knows there is a problem, I have found two TSBs about the sunroof. I called Pontiac Owner Care and they couldn't find any TSBs (I had to, of course, find them on my own on the internet - Thanks Flat Rate Tech) so they are useless. Once I had the TSB numbers, I called the dealer to make sure they knew what they were and scheduled…

Sources within General Motors have signaled that the GM Board of Directors today, met in an emergency meeting after the additional $2 Billion loss announced yesterday is in addition to the $8.6 Billion loss previously announced. We've also received word that the Board of Directors will hold another emergency meeting early next week. The Board is clearly not happy with the latest turn of events and this latest news of an additional $2 Billion loss. Most of the costs are seen coming from a Delphi bail-out which is expected to be announced early next week as well. As always, we'll have more details as we get them.

I would just like to kindly thank you Miss Queen for saying what has needed to be said for years. Consumer Reports is nothing but a criminal "magazine" with obvious intentions in mind. The guts it took for you to stand up and say what was on your mind, as well as many within the company is nothing short of spectacular. I commend you for your admiration and dedication to the company. It's about time people within GM grow a back bone and stand up for what they believe in. It's just a shame it was retracted by the powers that be. What's Lori's e-mail address, I say we all personally thank her for expressing her true feelings on the matter.

CAW Approves Camaro Changes Plant rules will enable Canadian factories to build Zetas, including Camaro. Members of Canadian Auto Workers Local 222 in Oshawa, Ont., have approved a series of work rule changes that could lead to General Motors announcing soon that it plans to move ahead with plans to build a new Chevrolet Camaro. The Camaro was one of the big favorites of journalists and car buffs at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. GM's executives have promised they will decide quickly if they will turn the concept Camaro into a production car before end of the decade. There was a time when General Motors was seen as the paragon of financial quality. Its bonds were rated triple A, and it was known for the most conservative accounting. Let other companies use liberal accounting rules to make results look better; G.M. did not need such things. The announcement late Thursday that General Motors would revise profit figures for every year of this decade, and would have to restate the 2005 earnings it had already reported, shows how far the icon has fallen. Less than a year after it lost its investment-grade bond rating, its bonds are viewed as middling even among junk bonds. "You have to question what controls are in place," said Charles W…

General Motors Corp., Delphi Corp. and the UAW are close to an agreement on a massive job-cutting plan to offer retirement packages to thousands of blue-collar workers, people familiar with the talks said Friday. The pact would help the struggling automaker avoid a crippling strike at the auto parts supplier. GM and the UAW are expected to announce details of the package within days. The deal would accelerate GM's efforts to cut 30,000 jobs across North America by the end of 2008, including 25,000 in the United States. It also would move the automaker and the union closer to a bailout package for Delphi that would avert a strike there, the sources said. GM also indica…

March 17 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, said that next year it expects to modify the ``jobs bank'' agreement that pays United Auto Workers members when the company doesn't have work for them. 3 March 2006 By Robert Farago It’s official: bankruptcy is good for GM. In their recent ass-covering exercise for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), The Ford Motor Company listed "adverse effects from the bankruptcy or insolvency of a major competitor" as a significant risk to its financial future. Translation: if GM goes bankrupt, The General will slough off its excessive labor costs and become… wait for it… competitive. So competitive, in fact, that Ford reckons GM’s products would gain an important price advantage. Well how about that? Obviously, there’s more to it than that. Ford’s SEC filing also alerts investors that GM’s Chapter 11 could destroy The B…

WASHINGTON — General Motors Corp. (GM) said Friday it is recalling about 900,000 pickup trucks worldwide to fix problems with tailgate cables that can corrode and break when loads are placed on them. The recall involves 1999-2000 models of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. GM said there have been 84 injuries, most of them minor scrapes and bumps, but no crashes or deaths linked to the problem. GM, the world's No. 1 automaker, said the galvanized, braided-steel support cables that keep the tailgates in place can corrode or fracture over time because of moisture seeping through cracks in the plastic sheathing of the cable or entering between the cable's met…

General Motors Promotes Greater E85 Consumer Awareness, Use In Minnesota and I started to think. In order to dispense Ethonal a Gas station would require new tanks and new fuel lines. For how long would this fuel sorce be in use, if GM suspects Fuel Cells are on the horizon? Meaning, hey, the next Impala is RWD. Also, I fully expect the Buick sedan to be produced there too quite possibly with the Geeee8. Two plants are expected. One in Canada, one in the United States. The U.S. plant could be anywhere from Wilmington, to D-Ham to at least one more inbetween. That said, the plans are shaping up & Oshawa has solidified their spot for Zeta production.

GM swerves, revives March discounts Despite its strategy to limit rebates, automaker adds bonuses to clear out slow-moving inventory. Brett Clanton / The Detroit News DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. has told dealers it will launch a nationwide discount promotion next month that could spark sales but detract from its long-term goal of steering away from big incentives. The "March Madness" event, tied to the NCAA men's basketball tournament, will run from March 15 to April 4. It will be similar to a promotion GM ran last March that included temporarily lowered sticker prices on select models across GM's eight brands and cash bonuses of $500 to $1,500 on models that had…

perhaps this isnt good news, but its news that is better for GM then most the competition... i'll be seriously supprised if toyota loses their consecutive month after moneth improvements... the stock price also might have a shock if this is the truth... link to article DETROIT (AP) - Sales of new vehicles fell 8 percent overall during the first two weeks in February, but there was some indication General Motors Corp.'s new vehicles and lower prices are attracting buyers, an automotive data firm reported Tuesday. Honda Motor Co. was the only manufacturer that saw its U.S. vehicle sales climb in the first 12 days of the month, up 4 percent from the same time a year ago, …

car connection "A new report from Merrill Lynch suggests that GM has been investing too little in new products for a long time and it isn't clear that even in the present crisis, the auto giant is prepared to change. "We believe GM will continue its historical pattern of underinvesting in product to the detriment of earnings and stock price," noted a new research report from John Murphy, Merrill Lynch's new auto analyst. "GM's market share losses are not new news. The company's consistent underinvestment is the primary driver of its consistent market share losses," the report says."

Apologies if this is a repost...GM recently released some '07 ordering guides (see http://eogld.ecomm.gm.com/dmdindex.htm) and I noticed that the CSVs all have the 3.9L V6 standard for '07. The 3.5 is no longer available. They are also dropping the Montana SV6, so there are only 3 CSVs for '07. '07 Aveo guide is out too...and the GMT900 SUVs, but I think those have been up for awhile now. -Andrew L

OnStar Updates its Navigation Option 02.07.06 OnStar Turn-By-Turn Navigation provides spoken directions without requiring the driver to enter a destination manually; without continued operator involvement (unlike current OnStar directions); but also without any navigation display. It will require a 2007 GM car and cost about $10 a month more than current basic OnStar service. By Bill Howard The in-car navigation space is getting a lot more crowded: Enter the upcoming voice-only OnStar navigation system, shown to the media on a live Webcast January 6, and to be formally announced by GM and Onstar on January 8 at the Chicago Auto Show. There's more of this coming as GM continues to decline: ANDERSON, Ind., Feb. 16 — General Motors once had so many plants here that it had to stagger their schedules so that the streets would not be clogged with traffic when the workday ended. At the city's peak, 35 years ago, one of every three people in Anderson worked for G.M. Now there is not a single G.M. plant left, and just two parts plants that G.M. once owned still survive. Anderson, about 50 miles northeast of Indianapolis, had 70,000 people in 1970 and now has fewer than 58,000. But in many ways, Anderson is still just as dependent on G.M. as it once was. Only now, rather than being dependent on General Mot…

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/content/1...27324/index.php I enjoy reading this series because there's occasionally some insight to the bigger picture. Farago is rooting for GM despite the constant gloom. He's just as frustrated by the nasty combination of historic short-sighted and ill-visioned GM execs, legacy union issues, and increased competition as many of us are. The prospect of Tower and Delphi not coming to a good-for-all-parties agreement with the UAW is troubling. Seems the UAW will run GM into the ground and there's nothing that either GM or the UAW leadership can do to stop it. People are just too fat at this point.

WHISPERS: Will the Russians Ditch General Motors? Date posted: 02-03-2006 TOGLIATTI, Russia — Russian automaker Avtovaz, which is now controlled by Moscow, said it will build a new factory near its existing facility here on the Volga River and is reviewing its joint venture with General Motors. Known outside Russia for its clunky Fiat-based Ladas, the company has been in the process of updating its model range for more than a decade while struggling with chronic cash-flow problems. Avtovaz had a dream of cracking the U.S. market back in the 1970s but never got any closer than Canada. The automaker builds more than 700,000 cars a year and is far and away Russia's larg…

GM is Among Both Most and Least Trusted Firms in US By BRADLEY JOHNSON | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/14/06, 9:02 am et General Motors is loaded with debt and is the subject of bankruptcy speculation. But give it credit: GM scores tops for trust among U.S. consumers. There's a downside, though: GM also shows up on the list of companies that Americans trust least. These are among the findings of the American Demographics 2006 Consumer Perception Survey. The survey was conducted by Synovate for Advertising Age, which, like Automotive News and AutoWeek, is published by Crain Communications Inc. Last November, the online survey sought the views of more t…

GM price cuts may not be a better deal Strategy of consistent low prices leaves some vehicles costing more, Consumer Reports says. David Phillips / The Detroit News General Motors Corp.'s move last month to significantly slash prices on the bulk of its vehicle lineup is helping generate higher sales and more showroom traffic, but a new report says more than a third of the models affected may not offer buyers a better deal. When GM cut prices as much as $2,500 on select 2006 models in January, or about 80 percent of its U.S. lineup, Consumer Reports studied prices on more than 500 of the automaker's cars and trucks before and after the move. The magazine found that 64…

A strike at Delphi could cripple GM -- analysts Wed Feb 15, 2006 4:28 PM ET Printer Friendly | Email Article | Reprints | RSS By Jui Chakravorty DETROIT (Reuters) - As the deadline for Delphi Corp. to ask a court to void its union contracts edges closer, analysts worry a strike at the auto parts maker -- General Motors Corp.'s largest supplier -- would deepen the financial crisis at the automaker. Bankrupt Delphi Corp. has threatened to ask the court to void its contracts with the United Auto Workers union if it cannot reach an agreement by Friday to lower labor costs. This could result in a strike, which could shut down plants and force GM to burn throu…

Several GM executives are being given different positions, including Brent Dewar and Mike Jackson. Here is a link to the entire story from The Auto Channel. I don't know one of these people from the other. Is this a good thing? As part of the changes, a man named Pete Gerosa will get a "special assignment" focusing on the North American turnaround. Gerosa is to "focus on implementing sales and service programs and distribution strategies that are integral to GM’s North American turnaround plan," but how effective can he really be if he plans to retire later this year?

GM CEO jokes about automaker's reported demise Fri Feb 17, 2006 6:07 PM ET MIAMI, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Responding to reports suggesting General Motors Corp. is heading for the automotive junk heap, its chief executive joked on Friday about the words a man might like to hear from a mourner at his own wake or funeral. "Look, he's moving," was the punch line, which GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner delivered to laughter in a speech to the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. Delphi delays motion to void union contracts Friday 17 February 2006, 10:46am EST By David Bailey CHICAGO, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Bankrupt auto parts supplier Delphi Corp. on Friday said it would delay to the end of March filing court papers to void its labor contracts and to cut retiree benefits, citing progress in talks with unions and its former parent General Motors Corp. A filing, which could have come as early as Friday, would not immediately have led to a strike at Delphi, which in turn would quickly cripple U.S. automaker GM. However, it was seen as likely heightening tensions in the complex negotiations among the three groups. Delphi filed the biggest bankrupt…

Can Jerry York Save GM? Ace cost-cutter ratchets up pressure for major changes Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News DETROIT -- In the 1980s, it was a feisty Texan named Ross Perot who rattled the board of General Motors Corp. by calling his fellow directors "pet rocks" in the pocket of management. A decade later, retired Procter & Gamble Co. Chairman John Smale led a board-room coup that toppled a GM chairman and set a new standard for corporate governance. But no outsider ever joined the GM board with the expectations attached to Jerry York. The appointment to the board last week of York, the ace cost-cutter employed by billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, is a pivot…

Limited recall riles GM owners NHTSA monitors brake callback in 20 states and D.C. as complaints mount. Jeff Plungis / Detroit News Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- General Motors Corp. last year recalled 1.35 million trucks and SUVs in 20 states and Washington, D.C., to clean brake sensors that could malfunction and cause accidents. Like stickers, GM's rebates dip as new pricing strategies take hold By JOHN K. TEAHEN JR. | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/07/06, 9:23 am et DETROIT -- Cutting sticker prices seems to be doing the job that General Motors assigned to it: enabling the automaker to scale back its huge rebates on cars and light trucks. We don't mean the first attempt at lower stickers, which GM installed last fall. Those stickers showed minimal reductions from 2005 prices, and they followed a summer of employee pricing, with its heavy discounts. The pricing strategy fell on its face then, and GM stopped talking about it. But the company decided to give it another ch…

FORTUNE Magazine) - It is the instinctive wish of most American businesspeople, even those unlikely to be directly affected, that General Motors not go bankrupt. True, some people will say, "They had it coming to them." But the majority will be more practical, telling themselves that the company is so central to the economy, so sprawling in its commercial reach, that bankruptcy--"going into chapter," as restructuring folks say--is ominous almost beyond contemplation. And yet the evidence points, with increasing certitude, to bankruptcy. Rick Wagoner, GM's 53-year-old chairman and CEO, may say, as he did in a January interview with FORTUNE in his aerie of an office high ab…

The Echo gets some points in the "damn, Toyota is cheap" category for putting the gauges in the circular hole in the center, so that the gauges could be moved for RHD/LHD without a different dash piece. Suzuki did somewhat the same thing with the Aerio, but without it being as cheap and damaging to the design. The dash is very small due to it being digital. There is a matching piece on the other side that you could take out and put a mirror image of the dash into. There is also a cutout for the "passenger" airbag in front of the driver, which is a blank panel of course. So very few panels would have to be changed to change the side the wheel is on, yet it's a very functio…

The Mazda MX5 Miata has been the world’s top-selling entry-level two-seat roadster for 16 years now since it’s debut in 1989. The MX5 was the brainchild of Bob Hall, who is now working at Proton in product development. But the past two months have been different with the launch of GM’s new Pontiac Solstice roadster which had sales figures double of the newly redesigned 2006 Mazda MX5 Miata. Pontiac Solstice sales for December were 2746 units where the Miata’s was 1007. January’s sales figures were 1990 units compaed to the Miata’s 1067.
