DETROIT — General Motors executives say they are being inundated with e-mail messages — sometimes 300 or more in one day — from Camaro enthusiasts who are anxious to get their hands on a production version of the concept car shown in January at the North American International Auto Show. "People will not get off Camaro," Bob Boniface, GM director of advanced design, told Inside Line. "Those people were hurt when that car went out of production, and they're letting us hear about it." IL reported in January that GM expects to build the Camaro by 2009, according to supplier sources. Boniface would not confirm last week's reports in a Canberra, Australia, newspaper that a …

NEW YORK, April 12, 2006 (AFP) - Celebrated auto boss Carlos Ghosn, who knows something about resurrecting dying car companies, predicted Wednesday that troubled US giants General Motors and Ford would recover and prosper. The Brazilian-born Frenchman, who rescued Japan's Nissan Motor from bankruptcy, dismissed speculation of GM's imminent demise as the world's biggest carmaker struggles to reverse huge losses and falling US sales. "I don't think so," he told the CNBC network from the New York International Automobile Show when asked if GM could go bankrupt. "I think there is a lot of potential and the car manufacturer can come (back) from any situation, as…

http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti...1/1003&refsect= I said it here long ago, to much derision I recall. I used the words "dead as a doornail". And it is indeed very much dead. (AutoNews reporting) NEW YORK -- General Motors has canceled the vehicle that was supposed to replace the Saturn Ion and is urgently seeking an alternative. As a result, Saturn dealers are likely to be left without an entry-level vehicle for several months next year, company officials acknowledge. ....General Motors might consider rebadging a vehicle from its overseas product portfolio, such as the Opel Astra....

I was looking through all of the 2007 model guides and it looks like a year of retrenchment...not much new, not much different in the way of colors and trim and virtual duplication of ordering groups/patterns. Say I wanted a telescopic wheel or a folding front bucket seat outside of an option group. It's almost as it they are saying "take it or leave it." Are any juicy new platforms or extensive face lifts due in 2008 or 2009? Good Gawd. Are you feeling the same way - kind of ambivalent about the upcoming model year?

Just caught Wind Tunnel tonight. Robin Millers [indianapolis Star] was on with his scoop that the word going around the pit areas in IRL and NASCAR have Roger possibly going to lead GM. Miller said he is following up on this and will report more later. He said he needed to shake out more info on it this week from team members in both series. I know this one comes up every few months and there is most likley nothing here as usaual, but it is the first time I have heard that race teams are passing the word around on this topic. Hmmm can you imagine a GM leader racing Dodge's, Porsche and Honda. GM could give him some token C6R's as a signing bonus.

Some optimistic news amidst months of disconcerting reports. Seems the GMT-900s are aiding GM's turnaround despite doubt expressed by the media. Significant improvement in the financial results of GM's automotive units and actions to improve efficiency are beginning to show signs of success: ---------- GM Losses Narrow in Q1 GMAC and others help out North American losses. DETROIT - General Motors Corp. reported a first-quarter loss of $323 million Thursday, the sixth straight quarterly loss for the world's largest automaker. The loss of 57 cents per share for the January-March period was narrower than a loss of $1.3 billion, or $2.22 per share, in the first quarter of 2005. GM said revenues were up 14 percent to a record $52.2 billion from $45.8 billion a year ago, thanks in part to strong sales in Asia and Latin America and improvements in North America, including better pricing. "The first quarter represented an important milestone in GM and GM North America's turnaround," GM Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said in a statem…

It has come to our attention that serious discussions are taking place for the first time in the conference rooms of one domestic manufacturer in particular on a subject heretofore unthinkable in Detroit. General Motors Spending $17 Million a Year on Viagra and Other "Lifestyle" Meds Date posted: 04-17-2006 DETROIT — General Motors' spiraling health-care costs are a well-known problem area. It appears the proverbial "it" will hit the fan tomorrow morning, young and old a like at all levels of the org chart will be told to leave. Select GM 8th level and above managers will be shown the door. Black Tuesday is designed to shake things up at General Motors. I am lead to believe that app. 2,700 employees will be let go thougout the organization, including managers this time. This is not a random firing. Every employee has a number assigned to them. A lot of this will be kept quiet for fear of potential law suits as a result of GM's actions.

GM Needs a Leader Who Isn't Afraid to Redefine an Icon By Carol Hymowitz From The Wall Street Journal Online Everyone these days is placing bets on whether General Motors can solve its morass of problems and earn money again. Chief Executive Rick Wagoner insists the company can, and that he's still the right man for the job. In a news conference last week, Mr. Wagoner listed the "dramatic moves" he has made to begin turning around the company. Among them: eliminating thousands of employees through buyouts, raising capital by selling a majority stake in GM's prized GMAC financing unit for $14 billion, and trying to halt the steep erosion of GM's U.S. market share…

Live Bait & Ammo # 72 At the Detroit Economic Club Miller said that bankruptcy “is a growth industry in America.” It’s ironic that Miller thought the audience in Detroit would find his smugness amusing. I heard teeth grinding like a tranny that popped a drain plug. He claimed the typical bankruptcy costs “about $100 million a year in professional fees.” He did not include the social costs, i.e., the losses to workers, investors, and taxpayers. If we provide enough carcasses, the vultures will flourish and the restructuring of America—lost jobs, lower wages, higher health care costs, and defunct pensions—will create new opportunities for bankrupt…

From www.thetruthaboutcars.com General Motors Death Wtach 65 10 April 2006 By Robert Farago I wonder what Billy Durant would have made of Rick Wagoner. GM's founder was a man of great honesty, intelligence and drive. He was also a high school drop out who started the company with a $1000 loan-- and ended-up penniless. Twice. Perhaps that's why historians tend to credit General Motors' epic growth to the man appointed president in 1923; about whom an observer wrote, "The manufacture of correct assessments, not physical products, is what most gratified Alfred Sloan." Billy was the “car guy.” Alfred was the “bean counter.” The history of GM is the history of the str…

Word is that G. Richard Wagoner will be a guest today at 10:30AM on "Face the Nation". Our failed CEO has been making the rounds of newspapers, radio, and television at a frantic pace. Mr. Steve Harris, the PR director brought back to save the day, has pulled out all stops in a desparate effort to build goodwill, and offset the stampede of calls for his boss to resign, or be fired. In my opinion, General Motors would be far better served if "Red Ink Rick" were instead simply made to "Face the Music"!

Two decades later, Japanese vehicles are even more popular. Faced with ongoing losses in market share, GM reduced its vehicle production in North America to 4.6 million vehicles in 2005. In contrast, Japanese automakers boosted their vehicle assembly here by 12% to 4.8 million cars and light trucks. In 1985, when Japanese manufacturers were starting to…

If you are interested in seeing one of the greatest propaganda efforts of all time, purchase tomorrow's Wall Street Journal. Mr. Steve Harris (The Rushing Rabbit), recently recalled director of PR at GM, has taken it into overdrive. First, he arranged for "Red Ink Rick" to be interviewed by anyone willing to "Paint the Roses Red". Now, rushing additional "Mad Chatter", the WSJ is the medium of choice. There you will find an advertised letter of support from the National Dealer Council glowing with accolades in support of Mr Wagoner, whom the New York Post called "the worst CEO since Chainsaw Al Dunlap". Without question, they are very concerned, even extremely worried…

Robert Lutz’s boss and wife both complain about the amount of time he spends on his BlackBerry according to Automotive News. But the General Motors product czar insists he wouldn’t be without the wireless communications device.”It’s an intimate part of my life,” Lutz says. “I use it constantly. It’s 80 percent professional, 20 percent personal.” Executives say the wireless devices help them stay connected to work around the clock, from anywhere in the world. The devices allow them to get out of the office and still get their work done. If an on-the-job crisis strikes, they add, the devices keep them accessible. Lutz exemplifies both the risks and the rewards. He told Au…

GM management to blame FLINT JOURNAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR Tuesday, April 04, 2006 by Theodore Edick Let's take a look at some of the decisions General Motors' top-level management has made over the years, and it will be easy to see why it is in the fix it's in. Several years ago, the Oldsmobile Cutlass was the third-best-selling nameplate behind Chevy and Ford. So GM canceled that car, and eventually did away with the entire Oldsmobile division. Not many years ago, Buick LeSabre was the best-selling Buick, so GM did away with that nameplate. Also Buick's best-quality LeSabre plant was the Buick City plant in Flint, and GM not only stopped production at t…

As I've said many times before, I see GM selling parts of itself off to the Chinese eventually. Maybe it's brand names, personnel, factories, tooling, or some combination of some or all. But this is the next step as sure as it was for MG Rover. If Saturn's new Opel strategy fails and GM is still running red, a buyer like SAIC would have a pretty nice dealer network already in place. The same could be said for Saab or Hummer or Buick or Pontiac. The Chinese are now the world's largest foreign holders of dollars. Something must be done with these dollars, and the Chinese want to become respected auto players on the world market. 2 + 2 equals 4. Don't think breaking …

GM to build a new plant in Mexico Jamie LaReau | | Automotive News / March 30, 2006 - 8:15 am DETROIT -- General Motors will start construction on a new assembly plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, sometime in May. GM will build compact and sub-compact vehicles at the new facility to be sold only in Mexico, says Carlos Gelista, director of public relations and government relations for GM Mexico. The plant, which should be running sometime in 2008, will assemble about 30 vehicles per hour and employee about 1,800 people, Gelista says. The cost to construct and equip the new plant will be between $600 million to $650 million. Part of that will be paid by the Mexican…

The buyer is an investment group led by Cerberus Capital Management. GM (nyse: GM - news - people ) should pour every penny of the sale's proceeds into new vehicles and new technology. Obviously, they are meant to "rally the troops" in an attempt to get the media and enthusiats shouting the praises of the company but lets look at one thing. With the exception of the sure-fire hit of Cadillac.....what has General Motors done to build on any brand, at all? They are slowly working into a "new" look for Chevrolet and Buick. Over at Pontiac the only thing selling is the Solstice, however the company plans for no different variants of the Kapppa which I feel is SUICIDIDE! Also, the Camaro is as you see it. Nothing more, nothing less. But, what about the Buick? The Pontiac? GM was quick to say "lets look at our hottest brand" but lets not. Lets inst…

Simple question: What would happen if Delphi strikes and sends GM into Chapter 11? Things I think can happen: 1. Immediate renegotiation of UAW contract. 2. Immediate renegotiation of plant contracts. 3. Immediate renegotiation of Delphi and other supplier contracts. 4. Ford declaring chapter 11 also, maybe Chrysler. 5. Court letting some assets be sold off (remainder of GMAC, Hughes). 6. Freeze in product development. Things I don't think will happen but possibly could: 1. Renegotiation of dealership contracts (hoping for this one). 2. Voiding of warrenties. Also how would the stock react? How would GM be better able (or less able) to fight Toyota a…

Okay, let's say that the board of directors decides to fire Rick Wagoner sometime in the near future. The question now is: Who takes his place? This is a question that I have been pondering over for the last few weeks. Some members of this forum seem to be hell-bent on seeing Wagoner get the boot, regardless of what the fallout would be. Others feel that Wagoner is doing as good a job as possible given the circumstances, and should not be fired at all. Still others (myself included) think that, while change at the top would be beneficial, there isn't much point in firing Wagoner if he would be replaced by another equally inneffective, GM-enculturated administrator; the…

12:01 ET AP - General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner announced his resignation today amidst persistant rumors of an impending boardroom coup. Although the GM Board of Directors have not commented to the media, speculation within the industry has suggested that the recent appointment of board member Jerry York could have been the catalyst for Wagoner's resignation. Before being appointed to the board, York had publicly commented that GM should sell off the underperforming SAAB and HUMMER brands, a strategy Wagoner openly opposed. Within certain industry circles Wagoner has been known as "Red Ink Rick," a nickname that references GM's spiral toward bankruptcy and an SEC probe …

General Motors has been in the spotlight lately with financial problems, and now one big mistake cost the company a lot of money. GM owed Jack Paulis, owner of Paulis J.R. Industries, $1,900, but through an apparent accounting error, transferred nearly $4 million into Paulis’ account, Local 4 reported. The error occurred when GM ordered one part for $1,988, but somehow the statement was noted as ordering 1,988 parts, and transferred the appropriate funds to cover what was believed to have been the accurate amount. Paulis said he was having a hard time returning the money, and when he made attempts to call it seemed as though they didn’t care and they showed no sense of…

GM Statement Regarding Possible Sale of Isuzu General Motors (NYSE: GM) acknowledged today that it is discussing the possible sale of Isuzu Motors Ltd. shares owned by GM in a private transaction. Isuzu is a core alliance partner with which GM has many long-term mutually beneficial projects and the level of activity between the two companies continues to increase. GM would not expect any sale of its Isuzu shares to have any effect on this important strategic alliance. There can be no assurance that any transaction will result from these discussions and it would, therefore, be inappropriate to comment further. GM Says Pricing Is Working PR spin prefaces sales figures due out this week. by Paul A. Eisenstein (2006-03-27) The "top-line" story isn't a good one for General Motors. The automaker expects to report a one-percent decline in first-quarter U.S. market share when March numbers are tallied up at the end of this week. But digging just a little deeper would reveal a more positive picture, senior company officials asserted during a Monday afternoon briefing for reporters. The decline in overall, or top-line, sales is largely the result of declining fleet sales, said GM's director of market analysis, Paul Ballew. On the retail side, he stressed, the automaker is act…

This year is going to be an incredibly life changing year for everybody related to the auto world. From employees being offered in excess of $100k that have over 30 years of service to a company to retire to the overall down sizing work force of manufacturing jobs. Looking at things, it's really kinda sad, yet sobering.
