GM: June sales dive spells brutal summer Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News DETROIT -- Sales at General Motors Corp. dropped sharply in June as the No. 1 U.S. automaker grappled with the long-term impact of its shrinking market share. GM's top sales executive said Tuesday that he was hopeful that the company's U.S. market share had hit bottom at 22 percent in June, but acknowledged that gains will be hard to come by until next year. "Is that the bottom? I'm not a clairvoyant, but I certainly hope so," said Mark LaNeve, GM's head of North American sales and marketing. On the day after announcing the unprecedented buyouts and retirements of 35,000 of its hourly worker…

From Forbes.com GM Still Looks Weak, Says Analyst Mary Crane, 06.26.06, 2:51 PM ET General Motors Banc of America analyst Ronald A. Tadross said General Motors' tactics to fix its business won't work and advised investors to sell on expected production losses. "The company's product cycle is at a peak, earnings-per-share quality is weak and the stock is expensive, in our view," Tadross wrote in a report to investors Monday. "We believe GM management is glossing over the current and future cost of rightsizing the business for the lower share." GM's suggestion that it might tap into a $4.5 billion secured credit line signals that its $13 billion in cash, as…

No, this certainly isn't another "Red-Ink" Rick diatribe. Buickman has done enough of those. Instead, some praise of Rick Wagoner from Peter DeLorenzo, for things Wagoner is doing right. Let's make sure that, in the midst of daily challenges to GM and the American auto industry, including the latest proposal from Jerry York, we don't forget the things which are right about GM. It is excerpted from the autoextremist.com website: " . . . I have to give Rick his due, he is focused on engineering a turnaround in the 'right' way - and I see real, demonstrative progress. When I say the 'right' way, I mean that Rick Wagoner has always tried to take into account the constit…

Secret Plant In Mexico Could Become GM's Area 51 From News Max.com: "We Heard … that General Motors has four plants in Mexico, but has secretly been building a fifth plant there. The global auto giant – facing enormous health and retirement costs in the U.S. – has been diversifying its manufacturing globally for years. Why the stealth plant? GM execs don't want to upset the UAW which recently cooperated with GM in a buyout plan for employees. Some 25,000 are said to have taken GM's early retirement plan. Meanwhile, Ford announced it is significantly upgrading its operations in its three Mexican plants." Link to Article

Dear Friends, It's high time to call a spade a spade. Mr G Richard "Red Ink Rick" Wagoner is nothing more than the evil incarnate, purposely placed atop General Motors for no more ryhme and reason than the planned decimation of the world's once largest industrial enterprise. This man, born in Wilmington Delaware, has been intentionally fast tracked. His placement as chief financial officer made no sense to outsiders as he leapfrogged many senior executives. His mission, which he readily accepted has been mostly fulfilled, spinning not winning, leading to our eventual bankruptcy. He is without doubt the worst sort of corporate criminal, personally responsible for the suf…

Well today, I was inquiring about an 07 Z06 for a friend of mine... because 06's were sold out he wasnt able to get one... 07's are sold out as well but... i asked about how much profit the 06's had, and if the 07's were the same... while, not sure about the exact price, it was a good comission... but apparently the price on the 07 is going up, but likewise, the invoice is going up more then the msrp... and this sparked an interesting discussion... while "total value promise" sounds good to the customer, sounds good to GM, it sounds horrible to the salesperson... Every model had a reduction in base MSRP for the year 2006... and now i've started looking over our sale…

Wow! 47,600 buyouts Deal speeds up GM turnaround by 2 years; Delphi exodus paves way for restructuring. Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News DETROIT -- More than 47,000 union workers at General Motors Corp. and bankrupt Delphi Corp. have taken buyouts or early retirements in what amounts to the biggest corporate downsizing in U.S. automotive history. GM said Monday that 35,000 hourly employees have agreed to leave the struggling automaker for packages ranging from $35,000 to $140,000 -- which will allow the company to reach its target reduction of 30,000 hourly jobs by Jan. 1, two years early. The final tally of buyouts and early retirements far exceeds early estimates and…

From www.thetruthaboutcars.com by Robert Farago Ron Tadross. Say it softly and it’s almost like crying. If you’re GM that is. The Banc of America Securities analyst isn’t exactly what you’d call bullish on GM. Unlike his evil twin, analyst John Murphy, Tadross sees GM heading for a cash burn flame-out. "We believe GM management is glossing over the current and future cost of rightsizing the business," Tadross declared. More to the point, he recommended that investors sell their GM stock, with a target that’s literally half of its current price. In other words, when Merrill Lynch talks, nobody should listen. Although the media persists in calling GM plant closures an…

Found this on CNN Money, and even though I can sense an anti-GM stance, I found this atricle interesting mostly because this is the first time I have seen an article about this. On a second note, I remember reading an article about GM keeping a few EV1's alive for "research". If anyone knows where this info comes from please post it. Anyway, here is the link to the article: http://money.cnn.com/2006/06/23/news/compa...ybrid/index.htm

The central mystery of the new movie "Who Killed the Electric Car?" is why General Motors created a dynamic battery-powered auto that drivers loved, only to crush it to smithereens. The mystery, meantime, at the National Museum of American History is why a rare surviving example of that car -- a silvery-blue 1997 EV1 sedan -- would be removed from display yesterday just as interest in the innovative vehicle seems bound to grow. GM, which donated the EV1, happens to be one of the Smithsonian Institution's biggest contributors. A $10 million gift in 2001 paid half the cost of the history museum's new transportation exhibition hall, which was renamed to honor the benefacto…

Reuters Story By Jui Chakravorty DETROIT, June 23 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. <GM.N> plans to offer zero-percent financing on most of its 2006 models and financing as low as 2.9 percent on its 2007 line of sport utility vehicles, a GM dealer said on Friday. The zero-percent financing offer would mark a deepening of a summer price war for U.S. automakers, which have been hurt by weak showroom traffic and slower sales of more profitable SUVs and trucks in the face of higher gas prices. GM declined to comment, but the company, which typically briefs key dealers on its sales strategy in advance of any announcement, scheduled a news conference for Tuesday to …

I was watching the news this morning on CNN and just before a commercial break, I caught the clip about the new side-impact crash ratings. Chevy Impala is number 1 followed by the Toyota Camry (or fat Mazda 6, if you so desire). I think that this is good news, considering the car comes standard with side-impact airbags, meanwhile some of its other competitors don't. I'm also surprised to see that someone else hasn't already posted something about it on here. Guess I get to be the one to spill the beans! Yay for me!!!

By DAN CARNEY Email Date posted: 05-11-2006 Since the launch of Cadillac's revitalized models such as the Escalade and the CTS, the company has promised to return to its one-time benchmark, "The Standard of the World." Yes, I know. One of the things I admire about the Toyota corporation is their clearcut brand identities. Unlike GM, who acquired all of these varying brands via buyouts, Toyota acquired brands by creating them to fill a void they saw in thier line-up. That puts Toyota at a distinct advantage over GM which has to balance the future of any brand identity with the brand's history. All Toyota has to do with its brands is deal with the future. For example, when Pontiac relaesed a Mini-van, people booed & hissed because THAT wasn't what Pontiac was supposed to be. Toyota makes Lexus whatever they want... there is no history to contend with. With that, they have a very well defin…

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman is criticizing GM for offering to "cap" gas prices at $1.99 for certain GM vehicles sold in Florida and California. "Is there a company more dangerous to America's future than General Motors? Surely, the sooner this company gets taken over by Toyota, the better this country will be," Friedman wrote, comparing GM to "a crack dealer looking to keep his addicts on a tight leash" by making the offer. Bob Lutz has shot back that Friedman "is so 'over the top' that it borders on psychosis." ( Go get 'em, Bob!) To view the article, which appeared in the 6/1 Detroit News, click here.

But today he penned the most hysterical anti-GM editorial which has appeared in newspapers across the country. He says that GM is the most destructive company in America. The application of direct injection technology to the 3.6-liter VVT engine – a member of GM Powertrain’s family of high-feature V-6 powerplants used on cars and tru…

You have an unspecified number of injuries from a non experienced workforce that think the work is too easy. You also have new, younger, untrained employees running slow all day and "in the hole" per say. This is happening at many different plants. There BusinessWeek...I just gave you ammo for another story.

GM names Troy Clarke as new North America president Reuters / May 30, 2006 DETROIT -- General Motors on Tuesday named Troy Clarke to head its struggling North American division, taking over day-to-day operations from CEO Rick Wagoner who has been leading the unit for the past year. Clarke, president of GM Asia Pacific since 2004, returns to Detroit after a two-year stint in GM's fastest-growing market and in time for crucial 2007 labor contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers union. Clark, whose new appointment will be effective July 1, served as GM's chief negotiator during previous round of contract talks with the UAW. GM is struggling in North America, w…

and why the domestics failed in the past 20 years. They tried to make cars just as bland and boring as Toyota and were always 2 generations behind them. It seems that they have finaly woken up. "There's no doubt that a design-driven philosophy is the only one that will work," he said. "People who are not sensitive to design, people who don't care about vehicles, people who view a vehicle as an appliance, they just default to Toyota. But Vice Chairman Robert Lutz, 74, says attitudes inside GM are changing. He says a new culture led by a product renaissance will help the company complete its turnaround. I'm of the opinion that the new Suzuki Swift being sold in Europe would make a great entry-level Suzuki product, plus it would build on Suzuki's motorcycyle performance image as a cut-rate Mini... Anyone know the plan? I'd rather see these here than the Daewoo's now in showrooms.

GM Using Replacement Workers For Up To 1 Year
by Guest Josh- 4 replies

I've heard this for awhile now, or rumblings at least but this is what GM and the UAW will be doing to replace the massive number of people that are leaving GM due to the early retirement buyouts. Evok and I have speculated in the past that some type of agreement would be conjured up between the Union and General Motors to replace those workers. This is the deal. GM has already began hiring temporary workers at three locations in Metro-Detroit. These temporary workers are being told they will be kept with the company for at least one year. However they will not have health benefits, and will not be considered part of the Union. Once the year passes, if General Moto…

Harald Hamprecht | Automotive News / May 22, 2006 General Motors is looking at low-cost production sites in Thailand, India and Mexico for a new global family of small crossover vehicles. The five-passenger vehicles would be smaller than the Saturn Vue and Chevrolet Equinox, GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz said last week at a design event in Ruesselsheim, Germany. They would be marketed by Saturn, Opel and possibly GMC and Hummer. "It won't be badge engineering," Lutz said. "We'll carefully protect the brand identities." Still to be determined is the vehicle architecture. Once that and the assembly site are selected, production could begin in 37 months, Lutz said. Th…

I sent this e-mail to Mark Phelan, writer for the Detroit Free Press, in response to his "Build the Camaro" article on the newspapers website. As i tell him near the end of the e-mail, i have put much of myself into the letter, and i humbly submit it for your perusal; Mr. Phelan, I am a thirty year vet of the General Motors Corporation. Started back in '76 with Fisher Body in Trenton, New Jersey. I was a nineteen year-old kid in wide-eyed awe at the manufacturing might of the automaker. Back then, GM controlled an unwieldy fifty percent of the US market. Specifically, what i was introduced to, and later became proficient in was roll forming. My department made…

I am starting to get baffled by the alphabet soup of change. Which new platforms are to be redone or scrapped/replaced for the 2008 and 2009 model year? 2008 - Malibu and related platform? 2009 - Impala and related platform? What about LaX and GP - when are they do for facelift or doomed to the graveyard of monikers? What is moving from FWD to RWD? This would be interesting for everyone's edification.

Flint: Strike Any Notion of a Delphi Strike Each day, the possibility of a potentially crippling Delphi strike seems to increase every so slightly as GM, the UAW and Delphi are still at loggerheads over an agreement that will prevent such a thing. Jerry Flint is not worried however, as he thinks the opposing forces are providing a whole a lot of bark but will lack the bite to actually go through with their threats. Is Mr. Flint right? See his reasoning for having little to fear. Read "Auto Strike? Not Likely" by Jerry Flint @ Forbes

Facility revved up for ethanol future Flex-fuel version now accounts for 15% of output but E85 remains difficult to obtain in state By MATT GLYNN News Business Reporter 5/10/2006 With gasoline prices holding at about $3 per gallon, vehicles that run on alternative fuels are looking more attractive to drivers. That's good news for the General Motors Powertrain plant in the Town of Tonawanda. The engine plant has churned out 170,000 engines during the last year capable of running on E85 ethanol, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Building the "flex-fuel" engine is a tribute to the productivity ratings of the plant, which employs about 2,500 p…

I just received an e-mail from Bausch and Lomb. If you've been following the news, you'll probably know that Bausch and Lomb sells a contact-lens solution called "Renu MoistureLoc". This product has been possibly linked to a rare eye infection (Fusarium keratitis) - which has caused them to recall (and stop producing) the product. Why is this interesting on a car forum? Their CEO is Ronald L. Zarrella. Here's his message in case you are interested: http://www.bausch.com/us/vision/about/news..._15_recall.html

Anybody hear tonights news, with the nonchalant announcement that gas will hit $3.00/gal in the next few weeks, but that by next summer, it could be up another $.25 ! Then the newscaster said that "the Big TWO" are pointing fingers at the large oil companies and accusing them of gouging, and the oil companies are answering back that Detroit has not done anything to improve efficiency in the past 10 years! Who in the hell cares?!!!! I'd throw them both in jail for raping the U.S public! This nonchalant attitude about these sky-rocketing prices, with no rational explanations is going to kill American industry, and cause one helluva crash! Then nobody will b…

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/14/opinion/...agewanted=print May 14, 2006 Editorial No Holds Barred Both sides in the labor battle at America's largest auto parts supplier, Delphi, are trying to ratchet up the pressure. Delphi's management asked a bankruptcy judge to throw out its labor agreements, which would let the company cut wages and benefits steeply. The United Automobile Workers leadership, meanwhile, has asked its 24,000 rank-and-file union members at Delphi to authorize a strike. The country is used to confrontations between entrenched unions and struggling corporations in the Rust Belt, but this one is more significant than the usual fights over who will …

And ends up making a profit! Those crazy accountants!! DETROIT, United States (AFP) - The world's biggest automaker, General Motors Corp., announced a revision to its first-quarter results, saying it had posted a net profit of 445 million dollars. GM said it had finalized its first-quarter profits to 78 cents per share following a "final determination" of its accounting for a recently approved retiree health-care settlement agreement and other adjustments. The automaker had said on April 20 that it had shrunk its losses during the first quarter to 323 million dollars, or 57 cents per share, from 1.3 billion in the same period a year ago. Ok, I'm sure everyone remembers the thread on the NG Malibu. It was quite the hot topic... but their were lots of conflicting reports from various insiders. So, I ask anybody out there what the latest word is? Is the NG Malibu still on for Epsilon I or did GM delay it to redo it for the Epsilon II platform or cancel it all together? Will GM ever put a rush on things for their mainstream cars and not SUVs or niche vehicles? How far along are they? The new Malibu can't come soon enough IMO. Structurally, I believe the current car is of quality but design wise I've never liked it--interior or exterior. Any updates, hints, answers are welcome. Thanks in advanc…

Anybody read the interview that Motor Trend published on p.90 of their June 2006 issue? They spell it out in no uncertain terms. He is throwing in the towel on the US market, hoping to just tread water, and pinning all his future hopes on GM salvation in China! That's why we are getting 2nd-class, ho-hum models, 'cause he wants to push the brand in China and make lotsa moolah! Although he cut his pay in half, it still is $1.1 MILLION dollars! And what about the rest of the management tier? The burden of 2.5 retirees per each US employee, with full benefits won't go away with a switch to a different money market. Sold Out: Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice and Chevrolet Corvette Are All Spoken For This Year Date posted: 04-20-2006 NEW YORK — General Motors may have posted its sixth straight quarterly loss on Wednesday, but many of its low-volume sports cars, including the yet-to-be-launched 2007 Saturn Sky, are already sold out for this year, according to GM Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz. In a speech in New York, the GM executive said in reference to the Sky, "All available production for 2006 is accounted for." The Sky shares its platform with GM's other popular roadster, the Pontiac Solstice. Lutz said the Solstice has the best turn rate of any vehicle in its segment and that the car i…

Saturn Sky rebadged as a Daewoo? Yes the G2X roadster was intro'd at the Busan Motor Show. Like the Sky and the Solstice, Daewoo will be using the vehicle as a halo and a way to lure younger buyers as it tries narrows the market share between it and Kia. We now have a Opel's version of the Sky sold in Europe as the GT and word has it a Holden model may be sold sometime in Australia in the future? Any way the G2X will only be offered and sold as a Daewoo in Asia. This will help add capacity and lower the cost per unit at the Wilmington plant and may make a second Gen more viable if it is sold world wide in greater numbers. Also before any one crys badge engineering …

This may go to Lutz as well depending on how many people respond, but first I'd just like to see what ideas everyone has for a flexible Kappa II architecture. I'd like to see: Pontiac: Solstice, and a vehicle with 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-door variants. 2.4L Ecotec with the 2.0L DIT optional. Buick: Possibly a sedan if it has a clear direction different than that of the Pontiac. 2.8L and 3.6L HF V6s Saturn: Sky, possibly a coupe a la the Curve but with different styling. 2.4L Ecotec and 2.0L DIT on Redline models. Chevy: Nomad, trucklet coming in under $15k (see Dodge M80). 2.4L and 2.0L DIT on SS. Cadillac: BLS, BLC (coupe + convert) 2.8L and 3.6L HF V6s with the V-…
