I really like the Dodge Magnum Hemi/SRT8 vehicles. I am nowhere close to being a MOPAR guy and would love for GM, preferably Chevy, to build something comparable. I believe Pontiac would be the best served to pull it off. Any possiblilities? Keep in mind: fairly new member, very few posts, and continue to like the Dodge Magnum and trying not to admit it.

Per Bloomberg.com. GM General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, will offer longer warranties on its vehicles in a bid to boost confidence in GM products, two people familiar with the plan said. The extended warranties mark the next phase of an eight- month-old initiative to rely less on cash incentives to generate sales, said the people, who asked not to be named because details won't be announced until later today. GM spokeswoman Mary Henige had no comment. If true I think this will work as if you want to make people feel you really have quality prove it by backing it up. It worked for Hyundai when they offered a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty after…

I love GM and their cars or I wouldn't be here. As well as they have treated me and my parents, I doubt I am going elsewhere. Needless to say, all of the bad press has left me in a funk, feeling a little perplexed...and analytical. So, one has to think of what may be going south at GM. I voted for QC but think it is both this and cost control. I read Consumer Reports. I look at how Toyota steals the show with an uninterrupted parade of "red dots" for the various systems in their cars over the years (Buyer's Guide, et al.). I then look at Cadillac and will see either a partial or a full black dot for some components...and in recent years, no less. …

Despite massive restructuring, thousands of buyouts... GM keeps rollin' Brett Clanton / The Detroit News Link to Original Artcle @ DetNews John Brooks works at the Orion Township assembly plant, where more than one third of 2,700 workers took cash buyouts or early retirement packages. ORION TOWNSHIP -- It's hard to say which is more astonishing: that General Motors Corp. is cutting nearly 35,000 U.S. factory jobs this year or that the automaker's plants, by all accounts, are still running smoothly amid the jaw-dropping downsizing. There have been small hiccups along the way, and more are possible as thousands of GM workers depart in waves through December and the …

Worhorse is a domestic supplier of motorhome, bus, and step van chassis. While not specifically a partner, they the exclusive provider of GM powertrains in this segment. At one time Ford owned this market. Worhorse started in the last 1990's and make a great product, I think. They have announced a new chassis called the UFO. Presently inexpensive class A motor homes are gas powered with the engine in the front under an obtrusive "doghouse". The higher end motorhomes offer a diesel pusher layout. The rear engine layout makes for a quieter and more roomy coach. Worhorse has announced a Vortec 8.1 L. powered rear engined chassis called the UFO. I think this may mean…

As forcast last week by GeneralWatch and reported in today's Automotive News, GM once again proves why management has no credibility. Wait until the folks who recently took delivery find out that they missed the boat as GM gives another example of why LaNeve and Company are not to be believed and should be immediately shown the door. How about the hard working retail personnel who had planned family vacations with the kids before school? In other words, thanks folks for working so hard, now choose between making dough and spending quality time with loved ones. Remember how GM lowered prices a few months back? The charade of "value pricing" was truly…

GM spokeswoman Ryndee S. Carney said the company made the decision in the normal course of making its media buys months ago, before the show made its recent announcement. "I think it's just a coincidence. I know it's not cause and effect," Carney said. A group of New York City officials have criticized the …

On my way out of Lexington this morning, I spotted a billboard that said: "We'll see your 10... and raise you 44. 54 plants in the U.S." And it had all the brands underneath and the big blue GM badge on the right-hand side. Thats probably one of the best ads I've seen from GM in a while. I wasn't even aware that they were doing this. I think its a great jab back at Toyota.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Why cancel Buick's Rendezvous? JAMES M. DOLLINGER, Chairman, Dollinger Motors Inc., Flint, Mich. Automotive News / August 21, 2006 - 6:00 am To the Editor: The Buick Rendezvous has sold well, mostly through inexpensive leases. It is Mexican-made, with a French name, looks imported and was promoted as "The Spirit of American Style." Although not an example of classic marketing, it did bring new customers to Buick. Similar to previous loyalists -- Park Avenue lease supports were pulled April 1 as the spring market arrived -- Rendezvous lessees will scramble for a replacement within their budget when General Motors introduces the more…

Starting Tuesday 8-29 through Labor Day, cars get $500, $1,000 on P/Us and Full Size Suvs, and $1,500 on Mid Size SUVs. GM just doesn't get it. They let the month slip away, then blast the market with overkill and meanwhile ruin the Holidays once again for those in retail. We'll go nuts for a few days and then return to the excitement of funeral procession. How will people feel who purchase this weekend only to discover they got screwed for want of a couple days. Once again I'll profess that until GM changes their marketing once and for all, the decades of decline will continue, Wagoner will continue to chop and cut, and GM will be extremely lucky to stay in business desp…

The News says GM is apportioning projects to centers of expertise around the world, eliminating competition within the GM empire, and is cutting its engineering expenses as a result. GM’s New Brand Strategy: Chevy Uber Alles By Andrew Dederer July 31st, 2006 1,000 Views When Alfred P. Sloan took the reins at General Motors, he had a clear vision of the company’s future: “a car for every purse and purpose." Sloan’s business model– offer customers a wide range of vehicles across distinct brands and encourage them to move “up” within the portfolio– was wildly successful. GM soon replaced Ford as US market leader, and never looked back. Ninety years later, the same structure is in place, but the car market has changed. And GM’s portfolio is part of the problem, not the solution. While most enthusiasts recognize the philosophy behind Sloa…

General Motors Responds to Editorial The Toledo Blade August 7, 2006 How ironic that The Blade's smugly ignorant editorial on General Motors ("D-Day near for GM," July 31) referred to D-Day. Both the D-Day invasion of Normandy and your editorial relied upon misinformation. The military used misinformation before the invasion to confuse the Germans and help end World War II. We're still puzzled why The Blade used misinformation against GM, which has helped support Toledo 's economy since 1916. One gets the sense after reading the editorial that The Blade, rather than bothering to do any research, based its assessment of GM on faded memories of the satirical film,…

This might not be the most important news of the day, but it is very nice to hear. Since this will most likely be a pure digital connection (like the VW and BMW), the sound will be MUCH better than the current AUX jack on SOME GM models. Add the intergrated controls on the radio (again, like the BMW and VW), and I think this will be another one of those "on the fence" options. Given the staggering number of people who own these things, I think this will be a bargaining tool much like XM radio and OnStar. I think this is a good move for GM. GM's performance wows Wall Street Associated Press Jul. 27, 2006 12:00 AM General Motors Corp. lost $3.2 billion in the second quarter because of heavy charges for layoffs and early retirements, part of its massive restructuring program. But without those charges, the world's largest automaker scored a profit that blew Wall Street away and bolstered management's claim that the turnaround is working. GM shares rose $1.34, or 4.4 percent, to close at $32 on the New York Stock Exchange. They have traded in a 52-week range of $18.33 to $37.57. The loss of $5.62 per share in the April-June period compared with a loss of $987 million, or $1.75 per share, for the same peri…

BY MICHAEL ELLIS FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER General Motors Corp. shares closed above $30 for the first time in more than nine months on Tuesday amid growing expectations that the troubled automaker could post an operating profit today. The higher stock price put billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian back in the black on his nearly $1.7-billion investment in GM stock. If GM beats earnings forecasts, analysts say CEO Rick Wagoner could tout the figures as proof that his turnaround plan is succeeding and the automaker doesn't need to join an alliance with Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA. "I believe that it will demonstrate beyond any possible doubt that Mr. Wagoner is …

I am guessing the net profit includes the cost of laying off 35,000 workers and closing 12 plants, right ? DETROIT, July 26 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Wednesday posted a larger-than-expected quarterly operating profit as it slashed costs in North America and raised its cost-cutting target by $1 billion, sending its shares up 5 percent. Earnings Preview: General Motors Corp. NEW YORK (AP) - General Motors Corp. reports earnings for the fiscal second quarter on Wednesday. The following is a summary of key developments and analyst opinion related to the period. OVERVIEW: All three of the Detroit automakers posted declines in June auto sales, prompted by higher gas prices and tough comparisons with the start of last summer's heavy incentives. In addition, GM's ongoing restructuring programs is also expected to impact the Detroit-based automaker as it struggle to right-size its operations and deal with mounting pension and health care costs. GM, the world's largest automaker, saw its sales plunge 25.7 pe…

www.BillCara.com July 17, 2006 GM: like flies to manure I am unimpressed with anything I read about the state of affairs at General Motors. I sold it a year ago at $35, and about six months later the stock hit a low close of $18.33. I call GM a pure speculation - the antithesis of quality companies (like the Cara 100) where most people should be focused on trading shares. Today in Japan there is published speculation as to whether Auto giant Toyota Motor (a Cara 100 component) will let third-stringer Nissan Motor go into a tripartite alliance with Renault and GM. Some of you may see this as a defensive move by Toyota. I see it more as a case of flies being a…

GM fleet sales to drop at least 60,000 units in 2006 Link to original article @ AutoWeek By JAMIE LAREAU | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 07/17/06, 8:37 am et DETROIT -- General Motors' fleet sales for 2006 in the United States will be down by 60,000 to 70,000 units compared with last year, says a GM executive. The automaker is also getting better pricing on units sold to fleets this year and is optimistic about the direction of retail sales. The WSJ reported that GM will entertain a pact with other companies, should the N-R deal fall through. It sounds almost like Rick has planned out the outcome of the 90 review. Well anyway, I got to thinking about VW. What do you guys think of those companies coming together in some capacity? VW wouldn't threaten GM in North America at all and the 2 companies would be a juggernaut in Europe, Asia, and South America. Unlike Nissan-Renault, VW does have some good technology and masterful interior making that could actually help GM in America. On the downside, VW is plagued with their own problems too, but not to the extent of Ford.

I figured the readers and responders on this forum may generally agree and be able to relate to this particular write up in the Washington Post. The author touches on some good points - that mainly Kerkorian has proposed this alliance or merger with Renault simply for the price of the stock - with absolutely no regard for the long term health and well being of General Motors. Moreover, he touches on how unsuccessful Nissan (and Renault) have been in so many areas, even in some where they've tried to take on GM directly (like the Titan). http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...6071401040.html

Automotive News Charles Child 7-12-06 It's clear that Kirk Kerkorian will not let up on Rick Wagoner, CEO of General Motors. Kerkorian's implied threat to replace Wagoner with Carlos Ghosn is just a start. Kerkorian, the crazy-like-a-fox billionaire from Las Vegas, will keep prodding Wagoner to perform. But I have a plan that might keep Kerkorian at arm's length. OK, Wagoner is not Ghosn. But there's no reason why he can't act like the celebrated CEO of Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. Ghosn stood tall at Nissan by spelling out specific sales and financial goals after he took command of the troubled Japanese automaker in 1999. Under his first three-year pro…

A Smaller GM Might Be a Beautifuller GM Date posted: 07-10-2006 I suppose that General Motors' current obsession with E85 ethanol promotion makes it the world's largest all-natural organic car company. After all, corn is organic and ethanol is distilled from starch crops, including corn — all-natural. And yes, being based on the California coast absolutely makes me a nuts and granola kinda guy, so I'm bullish on grain-alcohol fuels. The downside is that in the whole state, there are only four places that offer E85 (85-percent ethanol, 15-percent gasoline) fuel. Of these, only one sells to the public, so if you don't live near the Regional Transportation Center in San D…

From www.thetruthaboutcars.com Robert Farago 7-10-06 After carefully considering the potential benefits of a GM - Nissan - Renault alliance, auto industry analysts have concluded that the deal makes about as much sense as Finnegan’s Wake. Well duh. Anyone even vaguely familiar with GM’s current crisis knows there’s only one thing the General needs right now: vehicles that people want to buy, at a price that makes the company a profit. This they don’t have. And guess what? Neither does Nissan. The Japanese automaker’s sales are also in freefall, pending new product coming down the pike. Even if Nissan and GM and Renault could work together (a completely prepos…

GM CEO put in charge of exploring deal Link to original article @ San Jose Mercury News San Jose Mercury News By Michael Ellis July 08, 2006 General Motors' board of directors Friday issued Chief Executive Rick Wagoner a vote of confidence by putting him in charge of talks with Renault and Nissan Motor on possibly joining the French and Japanese automakers' alliance. I think they need to go through the motions and consider the deal, but in the end, they will reject it. And I think the board will go ahead and reject it as well. It's the wrong time to consider an alliance like this. Besides, if GM starts making money sometime soon, they may be able to buy Nissan-Renault in a few years.

Time for Wagoner to Show Why GM Needs Him Detroit Free Press Tom Walsh JUly 4, 2006 If General Motors Corp. CEO Rick Wagoner wants to keep his job and lead GM's revival his way, he needs to show Kirk Kerkorian and Wall Street the light at the end of GM's turnaround tunnel. Very soon. And if that means blatantly lifting a page from Carlos Ghosn's turnaround playbook at Nissan Motor Co. -- by setting specific near-term revenue and profit targets and vowing to resign if they are not met -- then Wagoner ought to do it. Forget all the highfalutin talk about synergies, made in Friday's proposal by Kerkorian's Tracinda Corp., that GM should join forces in a global…

I don't think R-N tie up is good for GM at all, just for the fact that GM doesn't gain much. I wouldn't mind a tie up if GM gained quite a bit out of it. With that being said, I think Honda and VW would be the best partners for GM if GM had to be in an alliance. Both companies have technologies that GM could use. GM could help VW in America, and vice versa in Europe. Outside of those 2 companies, I'm not excited about any others. But what about Ford? Hmm...GM buying Ford and dumping Lincoln, Mercury, and Pontiac? Could that work? It would be a juggernaut in North America and Europe for sure.
