Rollover Airbags in All GMs by 2012 With a heart-pounding launch of a dark red Buick Ranier SUV traveling 44 mph off a one-wheel ramp, General Motors Corp. today will unveil its state-of-the-art $10.2 million rollover testing facility in Milford. [...] GM also will announce today that by 2012, it will make rollover-enabled air bags standard on all retail vehicles. Currently, the air bags are on 43 percent of light trucks and SUVs. At the new testing facility at its Milford Proving Grounds, GM will perform 150 rollover tests next year in an effort to better understand rollover crashes, unpredictable events that account for less than 3 percent of all crashes but 25 perce…

Link Report: Kerkorian sells full stake in GM General Motors' Corp.'s painful process of reinventing itself apparently will continue without Kirk Kerkorian, whose ownership of almost 10 percent of the world's largest automaker failed to become a lever for the changes he sought. The Wall Street Journal, citing a person familiar with the matter, reported in Friday's edition that the billionaire investor sold his entire remaining investment in GM -- 28 million shares -- at $29.95 a share, a transaction worth more than $800 million. The newspaper reported that the shares were sold to Bank of America, a key lender to Kerkorian..

Click on the link, then scan the bar on the right hand side with blue titles and click on the one at the very bottom that says "Activist Challenged 11/30" http://www.wwj.com/ I'm not sure who the GM rep is that's speaking...could it be Wagoner? This was after the two guys went up on stage at the LA Auto Show at the end of Wagoner's speech to try to get him to sign a document stating GM will lead the industry in fuel economy by 2010. EDIT: I just saw a YouTube video...the guy is someone named Don Fuller...it says he is from MAWG and contributes to Kelly Blue Book. Video http://www.trucks.autoblog.com/2006/11/29/...goners-keynote/

GM Minivan Plans Panned General Motors Corp. may be bowing out of the minivan business. Faced with a steep drop in demand for the family vehicles, GM confirmed Tuesday that it has scrapped plans to build new minivan models that would have debuted as early as 2009 under Chevrolet, Saturn and other nameplates. While GM declined to comment on future vehicle plans, company insiders told The Detroit News that the company has no immediate plans to build minivans after it closes its last minivan-producing plant. The Doraville, Ga., plant builds the slow-selling Chevrolet Uplander and Buick Terraza minivans. It recently stopped producing the Saturn Relay. The Detroit News

Obviously everyone is looking forward to what we KNOW is coming. The 08 CTS, 08 Malibu, production Enclave, etc. But I'm talking about surprises. Honestly, I'd love to see, at least in concept form, a RWD sedan for Pontiac. Nothing would tickle me more than the hope that GM will give me a BMW 3-series-sized-Pontiac-priced RWD sedan.

GM's new key fob can check fuel level, tire pressures Posted 11/15/2006 1:00 AM ET The new fob will be a $150 option next year with Cadillac Escalades and other GM vehicles. By Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY For sleepless car owners who decide they need to check their tire pressure in the middle of the night, General Motors has a solution. GM (GM) plans to introduce a remote-control key fob next April that will allow drivers to not only determine the pressure in each tire, but also check the odometer reading, see if there's enough fuel in the tank to make it to work in the morning, change the radio station settings and see if they remembered to lock the car doors, to n…

General Motors Corp is prepared to nearly halve the number of Buick models it offers in the United States as it tries to reestablish the luxury brand in its home market, GM's chief executive said on Tuesday. Rick Wagoner, speaking to reporters at the unveiling of the 2008 Buick Enclave, said the automaker would also reduce Buick sales to rental car companies as it shifts toward targeting more profitable retail sales with upcoming new designs. Although Buick has offered as many as seven models in recent years, Wagoner said GM was prepared to accept lower unit sales with about four models in order to try to capture more showroom traffic and shun lower-margin sales to car …

GM Sells Majority Stake in GMAC General Motors Corp. sold a majority of its General Motors Acceptance Corp. finance unit to a group led by Cerberus Capital Management LP on Thursday, raising $7.4 billion in cash and completing a transaction that began in April. GMAC will be able to borrow at a lower cost by separating from its parent, cutting GM's cost to sell cars to customers. The sale of a 51 percent stake meets a goal of CEO Rick Wagoner as he works to recover from last year's $10.6 billion loss. GM will take a $2.7 billion distribution from GMAC as part of the transaction, meaning it will get a total of $10.1 billion for the stake this year. GM will get another …

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,232598,00.html WASHINGTON — Edwin Black is on a mission. He wants to go head-to-head with the head of General Motors in a showdown at Starbucks. The best-selling author has nothing against the coffee chain, but says he wants a public venue to confront the nation's largest car industry with his charges that GM has addicted the U.S. to the internal combustion engine — and hence oil — and is spelling doom for America. "These are the cigarettes of individual movements. These are the cigarettes of technology. These are eight-cylinder cigarettes. They are killing us," Black said recently in a one-on-one interview. So, a company called me up last week to ask if I would like to give them my impressions of car commercials - 1 hr, $65. I said sure, why not. So I went today, and they showed me four basic ideas for commercials. They were black and white drawings, some crudely animated, with voiceovers to give me the feel of what the finished commercials would look like. They were all part of a new campaign: "Let's Go: Chevrolet". Included in all of them was the new URL letsgochevrolet.ca, which for now, redirects to gmcanada.com. I'm assuming that they would develop it if they use these ads. Ad #1: Shots of people in an office. A man pops his head into a woman's cubicle, and says, 'l…

GM continues to upgrade Solstice, Sky Link to Original Article @ LeftLaneNews The Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky have been a smash hit for General Motors, and the automaker is looking to keep it that way. Shortly after launching the cars, GM responded to media and consumer feedback by adding a reinforcing brace added between the transmission and differential, implementing a more usable third gear, and improving wind noise. Now, the company is making further changes to ensure continued positive reviews. According to Edmunds, GM is adding power door locks to both roadsters, as well as height-adjustable drivers' seats. GM Wants 10% of Asian Market by '10 General Motors Corp., its market share shrinking at home, is turning to Asia to boost its profits, and aims to capture 10% of the region's market by 2010, the U.S. automaker's regional chief said 10%. Top target markets are China and India, where rapid economic growth is fueling demand for cars, said Nick Reilly, president of GM Asia Pacific. GM aims to sell 1.3 million vehicles in Asia this year to grab a 6.5% market share, two-thirds of which is expected to come from China, he said. Last year, GM's sales hit just over 1 million units in Asia for the first time, giving it a market share of 5.7%. Detroit Free Press

We know GM is developing diesels for the US. My question is how are these going to be released? Will they be launched just in new models and MCEs, or will they be made available for all models that can take them ASAP? The reason I am asking this is that my ideal vehicle would be an SRX, and I am wondering the probability that GM would release a diesel version of it as the engine becomes available, especially since its future is in doubt. I want to be green as well as plan for the future (diesel engines can switch to biodiesel fuel with no problem, whereas a gasoline engine making a fuel switch needs modifications).

Great clean euro looking sheet metal, vibe style arched roofline and what seems to be great visability. This shot gives us a glimps of what should prove to be a jump into hyperspace for the twin upcoming people movers. It goes without saying that GM will undoubtably have a world class interior as well. Just got back from the All New Silverado Ride & Drive Event where we pit the new 900 pick-up vs. our immediate competition including: F-150, Ram and Titan. After running 2 full road courses with Acceleration, Hard Braking, Large Off-set Speed Bumps, Lower Higher Speed Bumps, Avoidance Lane-Change Manuevers, and Motor Cross-like curves, I was very impressed with the new Silverado! In terms of Acceleration the Silverado felt more powerful, had better throttle response and really had a great pedal feel. The Titan had the…

Lutz: GM Still Open to Alliances No. 1 U.S. carmaker General Motors is open to an alliance with its No. 2 rival Ford, Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz said in a newspaper interview on Sunday. Asked whether GM would choose to go it alone or merge with Ford, Lutz said, "We are open to alliances. But we can also be successful alone." Lutz spoke in an interview in the Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung. Both Ford and GM are restructuring North American operations to adjust to a loss of market share in their home markets. GM is attempting to recover from a $10.6 billion loss in 2005. Lutz said GM remained open to a smaller deal with Renault-Nissan after GM declined to pursue a large…

TCC Test: 2007 Suzuki XL-7 Your first thought when shopping a crossover might not be Suzuki. It's one of the few brands known more for its name than its vehicles (what exactly is a Forenza, anyway?). And even then, the Suzuki most of us know has two wheels and a 200-mph top end. But that may change after a first drive of the new XL7. Suzuki doesn't have the cachet of a Honda or a Toyota , but its XL7 readily compares with the RAV4 and CR-V, and now offers seven-passenger seating, too. The sharply-dressed new XL7 is also a cheaper alternative to the coming class of crossovers that includes Ford's Edge and the Honda Pilot, as well as existing Subaru wagons. The Car Con…

In the past I have made the suggestion that each of the original divisions, except Chevy, have one single division exlusive platform. For example, all cadillac cars be built on the sigma, all buicks be built on zeta, etc. Saab and saturn could share with over seas divisionsb and therefor have exclusive plateforms here in the states. this would affod GM similar economies of scale while promoting brand uniqueness. Rather than 8 versions of W-body over 4 divisions like the had back in the day, they could have 5 versions of W-body at one division. (sm, md, lg sedan and sm, lg coupe) for example. The second advantage is that when the platform is updated the entire division'…

TCC Test: 2007 Suzuki SX4 Though it's called a crossover, the SX4 has all the desirable attributes of a "station wagon"-you know, that ancient phrase for, um, essentially the same thing. It's a five-door hatchback with second-row seats that tumble forward for maximum cargo-carrying. Five passengers fit in its chairs, and as long as you're not the poor guy sitting in the middle of the second row, life is pretty good. I don't know if GM is running the same ad campaign in the US, but it's got me completely baffled. For months now, the overall message I've got from Chevy's ads is that losers should buy a Chevy. Their website pretty much sums it up. http://www.johnny.ca/ You can view the commercials there as well. Check out the one for the Aveo. Some chick wants to get some from Johnny and all he's concerned about is getting a parking ticket. What message are they trying to send? I honestly don't get it and it sure as hell doesn't make me want to drive a Chevy!!

From www.thetruthaboutcars.com According to the highly credible “Ford and GM set to merge” journalists over at Automotive News, The General has agreed to pay bankrupt parts supplier Delphi’s remaining union workers an unspecified amount of money for an unspecified amount of time to avoid a planet-killing strike. Yes, it’s The Mother of All Extortion Pay-Offs– providing you don’t count that huge pile of money GM’s already agreed to pay twenty thousand not-so-dearly departed members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) who labored on behalf of Delphi. EXCLUSIVE FREE PRESS INTERVIEW: Wagoner: GM's very much alive Don't write off carmaker yet, CEO says September 10, 2006 BY JOE GUY COLLIER Link to Original Article at Detroit Free Press General Motors Corp. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner has taken his fair share of criticism this year. Some in the business media have called for him to step down. Wall Street analysts put odds on the likelihood of GM filing for bankruptcy. A major investor pushed him into talks with Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. about forming an alliance. So, after a string of positive developments -- costs are down, operating profits are up -- Wagoner can hardly be blamed for being on the offensi…

From www.autoextremist.com by Peter M. DeLorenzo GM Marketing goes back to the future. Detroit. Big changes for GM marketing are imminent, as the path they have followed for years and the path that contributed mightily to the company's freefall in the market is going to be abandoned. GM is about to give its moribund divisional structure a serious boost by reconfiguring the individual divisions, giving them more autonomy and giving the divisional leaders serious clout for the first time in years. To understand where GM wants to go with this move, you first have to go back - way back - to GM's "glory days" to understand where it once was and why they need to take a p…

So much for Maximum Bob From www.thetruthaboutcars.com GM’s September sales figures are out. Despite generous Labor Day incentives, zero per cent financing to anyone with a pulse and an easy year-on-year comparison (GM was in the post-Fire Sale mode last September), vehicle sales are down seven percent. Given GM’s upcoming production cutbacks, there’s only one way sales can go from here: down, taking GM’s declining market share with it. Never mind. According to GM Exec Maximum Bob Lutz, "Whatever our market share stabilizes at in the US— 22, 23, 24 percent— I don’t really care. The idea that GM… has got to get back to 30 percent is a wacky notion with all this global …

GM: Feeding the Healthcare Giant The world's largest automaker is being driven deep into financial trouble not only by the cars of a competitor, but also by the medical bills of its own workers and retirees. Last year, GM spent $5.3 billion on health care -- enough to buy a GMC Yukon for each of its U.S. employees. By 2008, General Motors will likely spend more on health care in the United States than on its hourly-worker payroll. Read "Stranglehold" @ The Detroit News

Car & Driver has developed a new phase in thier road test criteria. They will be using Virginia International Raceway or VIR. They did a big spread in the newest issue. In the future they will incorporate a lap time into overall testing. They will use this benchmark on most performance based cars. It's common performance knowledge that if you run a sub 8 minute lap a Nurburgring you've got a great performer. This is our comparable benchmarking location in the US, as defined by C&D. Now something good for GM which came out of the first tests. The Cobalt SS bested the Maxda MX-5 Honda Civic Si & the Volkswagen GTi (by 4-5 seconds per lap) which were in its pric…

The General Motors Standards for Excellence program gives dealers the opportunity to meet sales and service criteria after having ponied up an initial investment and, upon achievement of said goals, receive back tens, or hundreds, of thousands of dollars quarterly from GM. Independent contractors hired by the factory visit dealers under the guise of "SFE Coordinators". In essence, these individuals really perform the work that should be done by district managers anyway, namely informing and consulting franchisees on their operations. Having these coordinators is truly an exercise in duplicity. In fact, the entire program was ill-conceived from the beginning. Targets were …

Detroit's carmakers are entering a period of crisis. For the next half-year car sales are likely to decline because of rising interest rates, bad news from Iraq and, above all, the climb in the price of gasoline. Even as that price retreats below $3, the damage has been done. People will have reason to worry about buying fuel, and that's bad for the car business. It is especially bad for Detroit's car business, dependent as it is on pickup trucks and big sport utility vehicles: Chevy Silverados and Suburbans, Ford (nyse: F - news - people ) F150s and Expeditions, Dodge Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees. These parts of the business are hurting the most. The Japanese and…

What Ford Motor Co. needs is more top execs with nicknames. You know, like "Red" Poling. At least that's the theory of one Ford lifer who's been there since "Hank the Deuce" was CEO. Technically, "Hank the Deuce" isn't a nickname. It's the way some people refer to Henry Ford II, just as some call Jacques Nasser "Jac the Knife" because he was a cost-cutter. In addition to Harold "Red" Poling, there also was Charles B. "Tex" Thornton, the former army colonel who led the 10 "Whiz Kids" into Ford after World War II. But not all nicknames carry the same weight. Semon Knudsen's nickname, "Bunkie," seems a little trite when you compare it to the "Big Bill" moniker his fa…
