Suits filed over GM speedometers By David Bowermaster Seattle Times staff reporter Kevin Zwicker knew something was wrong when the speedometer on his 2004 Chevy Suburban indicated he was going 10 mph, even though he was driving at or near the speed limit on Interstate 5. Zwicker's speedometer failed completely in April 2006. But General Motors did not replace it for free because the truck was outside the standard three-year, 36,000-mile warranty period. Zwicker had purchased an extended warranty, so he paid $100 for a new speedometer rather than the usual $400 to $500. But now Zwicker, who lives in Snohomish, is the lead plaintiff in a federal lawsuit seeking damage…

The new vehicle platform will incorporate pieces of Kappa (Pontiac Solstice) and Zeta (Pontiac G8), creating a rear-wheel drive architecture that will play a large part in the future of Pontiac and Cadillac. Sources say that Pontiac’s next G6 is set to go rear-wheel drive and will be the first to use the platform. GM’s Resident Car Czar, Bob Lutz, has said in public and private that he’d like to position the Pontiac brand as the company’s American answer to BMW…

GM CEO sees more alliances Wagoner says escalating costs will drive collaboration but declines to comment on possible Chrysler bid. http://money.cnn.com/2007/03/06/news/compa...on=money_latest General Motors Corp. Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said escalating costs would mean more industry alliances and mergers but declined to say if the world's largest automaker would bid for rival DaimlerChrysler's struggling Chrysler Group. Wagoner said the costs of developing the next generation of automobiles, especially the replacement for the traditional internal combustion engine, meant that the industry would be driven toward deeper collaboration. Mayday! Some Cars Will Lose OnStar Link By KEN BELSON Published: November 19, 2006 Link to Original Article @ NYTimes FOR the last decade, OnStar has promoted itself as a paragon of convenience and peace of mind for car owners. Best known for its ability to bail out customers in a jam — and even make an automatic call for help when an air bag has been deployed in an accident — the service has about four million subscribers. OnStar makes its pitch in a series of alarming radio advertisements that use recordings of actual emergency calls to demonstrate how operators in an OnStar call center are standing by to summon an ambulance, open a car with a child locked insi…

UPDATE: Pontiac has told us that the new Vibe will be appearing at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the fall instead of the New York show. The word on the web is that GM won't be taking the Pontiac Vibe behind the tool shed just yet. The Vibe nameplate, however, may be gone in favor of a "G" designation to follow with Pontiac's current naming scheme. While there is no official confirmation, the second-generation Vibe is expected to continue to be a joint product between GM and Toyota. The Matrix, Toyota's version of the car, is set to be replaced next spring by a car designed after the Mazda3 and similar to the European-market Auris.

GM image upgrade a ray of hope March 11, 2007 Link to Original Article @ Detroit Free Press | BY TOM WALSH | FREE PRESS COLUMNIST When you're on an economic losing streak as ugly as metro Detroit's -- Pfizer closing its Ann Arbor research complex, Chrysler on the auction block, Comerica headquarters moving to Dallas -- you look for an encouraging sign wherever you can. So it is with a flutter of hope that I bring two seeds of promise regarding the region's biggest corporate citizen, General Motors Corp.: A new national poll of 1,000 Americans by Rasmussen Reports shows that 69% think "favorably" of GM, a big jump from only 48% last year. And in Fortune magazine's 2007…

Someone I work with forwarded this link to me. MSN is asking peoples opinions about which manufacturer makes the better vehicle. Surprisingly GM is dominating the survey with 83%. Although the article looks like its more propaganda trying to put Toyota in a positive light boasting how it can do no wrong. I especially like this bit, "Completing the circle, GM's trying to go green while Toyota's making macho." Who in their right mind would consider Toyota macho? Sorry I don't think their ugly ass truck makes them macho, but thats just my opinion I guess. GM and Honda presented before the United States Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. Honda's presentation had some interesting items (http://energy.senate.gov/public/_files/germantestimony.doc), but buried deep inside are some stats from The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) on plug-in hybrids. According to a report from Sept 2006, a plug-in hybrid with a 40 mile range would require a $17,500 battery. As the Volt can go 64 miles, that would equate to roughly a $28,000 battery (a hybrid, by comparison, currently has a $2,000 battery) Currently, according to the ACEEE and Honda, the payback for the hybrid portion of a hybrid is 7.…

Will the Ultra V8 have HCCI? I was browsing today & came across the news from the Geneva auto show about GM's new 2.9l V6 diesel. It rang a bell for me, so I rummaged through some old bookmarks and came across this post. I originally dismissed the post as being nonsense or unbelievable, but now with the 2.9l being officially announced, it makes me wonder about the 4.5l V8 being mentioned -- is it the Ultra V8 rumored to replace the Northstar? HCCI huh? Sounds cool!

General Motors stunned the automotive world last week, but it wasn’t for the usual negative reasons. Industry followers more accustomed to hearing about large layoffs or sickening sales declines were startled when GM said its U.S. sales rose 3.7 percent in February, even as its two domestic rivals, Ford and Chrysler, posted sizable declines and the overall market was flat. GM’s gain in the normally soft month was led by strong demand for its sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks including the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado. Even more impressive, the gain came without the huge sales incentives of previous years. Link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17467382/

GM sales rise; Ford, Chrysler slip Despite an expected decline in U.S. industry sales, GM reported a 3.4 percent total sales increase, compared with February 2006. The sales gain was due to an 11 percent retail sales increase. Retail and fleet sales by GM dealers in the United States totaled 311,763 vehicles, compared with sales of 301,545 in February 2006. Fleet sales were down 18 percent due to a planned 25 percent reduction in daily rental sales. "Our pickup, SUV and crossover business was terrific across the board. Our customers are telling us that we have the winning formula - the best products, industry-leading fuel economy and the best value," said Mark LaNeve, v…

GM has recalled its all-new crossovers, the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, because of potentially faulty airbag sensors. The recall affects all 13,032 of the vehicles on the road. The problem stems from a faulty sensor that controls the front airbags’ deployment. It will also prevent the vehicle from alerting owners of a malfunction. GM says the problem is a software issue and can be remedied with a service — no parts need to be replaced — at the dealer at no cost to owners. The company discovered the problem during internal testing and no incidents have been reported. Letters went out Thursday to Outlook owners, and letters for Acadia owners will go out Feb. 28. Owne…

What is GM trying to accomplish? Chevrolet has 8 vehicles, Pontiac has 8, and cadilac has 5, and Buick 3 It makes no sense. It seems like they are purposely trying to kill the Buick division. I don't understand how they expect Buick to be a succesfull division with the Lucerne and Lacrosse whose platform and engine have been around for years. Buick needs new vehicles and they need it now. They should have RWD, a 2dr, a convertible, and a 3 series type. They should also offer more V8's. Come on GM get your head out of your ass

I have grown weary of watching those damn Toyota ads talking about high mileage cars. I also REALLY dislike those ads about how 90% of XXX Toyota models are still on the road since 19-whatever year. They're both dishonest ads because they don't compare to any other manufacturer (Toyota does a lot of things on the line of dishonesty.) Nevertheless the ads leave an impression on consumers. GM will offer new incentives to move '05, '06 vehicles Jamie LaReau | Link to Original Article @ Automotive News | January 19, 2007 - 2:33 pm DETROIT -- General Motors is telling auto dealers that it will unveil an incentive program today that will put customer cash on 2005 and 2006 models and offer more salesperson incentives under the Mark of Excellence program. GM has not released details, but a memo to dealers this morning says GM plans to offer $750 bonus cash on all 2005 and 2006 models through Feb. 14. It also will offer a $200 salesperson bonus and a $50 sales manager bonus on all 2005 and 2006 models sold through January. GM's regional dealer councils hav…

Market Watch! GM's Incentives Drop - Japan's Shoot Up Original Link Just got the year-end sales figures from our crack team of automotive data editors and analysts. These guys have my ultimate respect, because they somehow manage to corral all the sales, pricing and incentives figures scattered throughout the automotive industry and transform them into something a journalist major can understand. Some of the more compelling figures from 2006: 1. General Motors' U.S. market share dropped to 24.6 percent, but the bulk of it came from cutting back on fleet sales. Not surprisingly, GM's incentive spending also dropped by 17.5 percent, to its lowest level since 2002 (and …

GM Grows by Leaps and Bounds Overseas Bolstered by sales of premium motorcars like the Sino market Buick LaCrosse pictured above, deliveries of GM products in mainland China rose by 25% over last year's strong figures to 876,747 units. This also earns GM an 11.8% share of the domestic Chinese market, an impressive for a foreign manufacturer in an increasingly-competitive and state-dominated market. For the very first time, Buick sold more cars outside the United States than within (304k vs. 240k) and its not all the result of budget models. The more upscale and expensive Chinese LaCrosse sold just over 52,000 units in its first year on the market, compared to 71,0…

Leadership After Lutz Bob Lutz has already retired at least once from an executive position at a car-maker when he left DaimlerChrysler following the merger. When he joined General Motors a few years back to oversee its product development, he was already well past the standard retirement age and by next year he will be 75 years old. According to Just-Auto.com, GM Europe President Carl-Peter Forster has been informed by Chairman Rick Wagoner that he will be taking over Lutz's seat on the board of directors as well as his role leading product development in 2008. Lutz Likes the Tundra The new Toyota Tundra, the Japanese automaker's first entry into the full-size pickup market dominated by U.S. automakers, got a positive review from an interesting source Tuesday: General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, who heads the automakers' product development efforts. Lutz, meeting with reporters at the North American International Auto Show, said he was impressed with the new Tundra, which is on display at the show and is now hitting dealer showrooms, and that he has no doubt that Toyota (Charts) will meet its sales target of 200,000 of the vehicles a year. "I took a good look at it today," Lutz said. "I think it's a very, very, very well e…

'07 looking up for GM Automaker will pump another $1B into products as cost cutting continues Sharon Terlep / The Detroit News Link to Original Article @ DetNews The upbeat picture General Motors Corp. executives painted for Wall Street on Thursday is a far cry from a year ago when company leaders were scrambling to explain a disastrous $10.6 billion loss. If predictions for 2007 prove true, the world's largest automaker will shave losses, bolster spending on new products and grab market share in competitive world markets. But the heat is far from off GM, which lost $91 million in the third quarter of 2006 and expects to lose money again in 2007. Toyota Motor Co. is…

GM May Gain Proton Power General Motors Corp. may bid for a stake in Proton, Malaysia's biggest automaker, which is seeking a strategic partner to help reverse its dwindling fortune, a report said Wednesday. Since late November, GM officials had met several times with the management and shareholders of the Malaysian carmaker and may make an offer as early as this month, the Business Times quoted an unnamed industry executive as saying. U.S.-based GM, the world's largest automaker, has proposed to take up a small stake at Proton's holding company as well as acquire a stake in Proton's manufacturing arm, the executive told the daily. GM's proposal includes helping Prot…

GM aim: Show its softer side Global restructuring, cost cutting and a revamped product line are the forces driving General Motors Corp.'s turnaround bid. But another less tangible factor has grabbed the attention of the world's largest automaker: likability. Long viewed as stodgy and ultra-corporate, GM is making a concerted effort to show a more human and personal side of the world's largest automaker. "There's a feeling that GM is the big, insensitive colossus that needs to be kicked regularly," said Bob Lutz, GM's vice chairman for product development. Lutz, a former top Chrysler executive, said one factor that helped that automaker's comeback in the 1980s was its …

With the return to power of Michigan's congressional Democrats -- who will head three key committees and have significant say over the agenda on Capitol Hill -- lawmakers are expected to revive several proposals aimed at helping the domestic industry. New GM Crossovers On An Odyssey of Their Own By Scott Anderson Dec 28, 2006 1:08 PM Link to Original Article @ WardsAuto PALO ALTO, CA – It’s just not cool to make minivans anymore. It’s debatable if minivans ever were cool – just ask any 30-something who grew up sandwiched between a cooler of Capri Sun and mesh bag of soccer balls. But minivans are even less cool if you’re an auto maker on the wrong end of the segment, as General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. demonstrated this year. Both domestic auto makers have shut down their minivan programs, leaving the sliding-doors wide open for the leaders: The Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Group’s Dodge Caravan. By no…

GM's CEO pulls off a trick The automaker's improved performance during the third quarter and the stock’s 79% gain this year are the blue smoke and mirrors that make CEO Rick Wagoner one of corporate America’s top illusionists. It's hard to believe, but Rick Wagoner may just pull a Harry Houdini and escape the General Motors (GM, news, msgs) mess with his CEO job. But is that any good for GM's shareholders? Less than a year after the automaker posted a loss of nearly $11 billion, prompting one of the largest restructurings in corporate history, Wagoner may be able to relax. Today, GM reported that its third-quarter loss narrowed to $115 million, from $1.7 billion a yea…

Rule three of automotive journalism: When a domestic carmaker introduces a new midsize, midprice sedan, reviewers are to write, "They're now as good as Camry and Accord." So here goes. The 2008 Chevy Malibu, which Chevrolet will introduce at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, looks like it's now as good as the Camry and Accord. Our obligation to the profession complete, it's only fair that we ask you to check back a few months from now to see what we think of the new 'Bu after we actually drive the thing. But, we must say, the completely restyled, more powerful Malibu sedan really does look pretty good. Aura underneath On sale in the fall, the 2008 Malibu sedan still uses GM…

Tiger to Become Spokesman for Other GM Brands? Tiger Woods might one day stump for General Motors brands other than Buick. The broader role could be part of an aggressive marketing effort to revive the Buick, Pontiac and GMC brands in 2007. A new GMC crossover vehicle, the Acadia, is arriving in dealerships. Buick dealers will get a similar vehicle, the Enclave, next year. Pontiac, meanwhile, might receive a new entry-level car similar to the G5, John Larson, GM's general manager of Pontiac-Buick-GMC, said during a recent event here. The brands' sales are down so far this year (see box), although GM's drive to trim fleet sales accounts for some of the decline. The n…

Lutz Not Happy with Changing Fuel Economy Rules A proposal to increase the U.S. fuel economy standards would force Detroit-based automakers market to "hand over" the market for trucks and sport utility vehicles to Japanese manufacturers, a senior General Motors Corp.(NYSE:GM - news) executive said. December 07, 2006 Whither the Minivan? By Bob Lutz GM Vice Chairman Lots of minivan talk going on… let me just make one thing clear: Nobody said GM is getting out of the minivan business forever. We simply pulled a minivan option out of the running for one of our archtectures. We reserve the right to initiate whatever future product programs we feel the market desires, up to and including new generations of minivans if we deem them necessary and desirable. That’s really the key to everything, of course: the market. And we think the case for another new entry at this point in a market is trending away from minivans just doesn't make a lot of sense. Look, the mini…

GM Memo Outlines Comeback Challenges Where General Motors Corp. once boasted of its size and strength in the U.S. market, GM has now turned an increasingly critical eye on the weaknesses that threaten its fledgling turnaround. GM's Lansing Plants Turn It Around This winter, Lansing's auto industry has new life. GM's Lansing Grand River plant, which opened in 2001, is cranking out Cadillacs and ranks among the world's best auto plants in quality. In November, GM's Lansing Delta Township Plant started making a new family of large crossovers - the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave. Some local officials and workers are hoping GM will add another assembly plant at the Delta Township location, on Lansing's western edge. The hope of expansion may be getting ahead of the Lansing - and GM - auto story. GM is in the process of scaling back North American production because of declining sale…

The automaker drove home its reasons for cautious optimism at a media event I attended last Thursday night. But first, CEO Rick Wagoner (pictured speaking at the recent L.A. auto show) spoke of impending financial results. This time last year, GM was $2.3 billion in the hole. Much of the remaining …

Edmunds Evaluation: 2007 Suzuki SX4 Hatchbacks rule. And they're popping up all over the place. But the 2007 Suzuki SX4 is much more than a hatchback. Sure, it compares in size and price to the new crop of vehicles being produced by other Asian automakers but the Suzuki SX4 is the least expensive all-wheel-drive vehicle on the market. With a five-speed manual transmission its base price is just $14,999. Our Suzuki SX4 came with a four-speed automatic transmission and no options and stickered at just $15,999. We spent two weeks with this charming little hottie and found it to be, well, charming. Although it's a little light on frills, the SX4 is roomy, comfortable and…

What?? Isuzu Considering New U.S. Plant Japan’s truck maker Isuzu Motors Ltd. is considering building a new assembly plant for small trucks in the United States if sales volume doubles from the current level, company officials said. Isuzu President Yoshinori Ida disclosed the possibility during a press preview of its new truck in Yokohama, just east of Tokyo, according to company spokesman Yukio Hirano. I think he's right. http://www.thecarconnection.com/Auto_News/...192.A10986.html Back in my army days they used to tell us, "Take the high ground." It's better to be on top of the hill shooting down than on the bottom, climbing up. I found this was true in the luxury car business, too. To succeed you had to take the high ground. Sell the higher-priced luxury car with the advanced technology, not the lower-priced one. Don't be worried about costing more. Glory in it. Our Cadillac forgot this lesson long ago, went for volume, lost the high ground to Mercedes and Lexus and BMW, and really is no longer a luxury nameplate. It's what Buick used to be. I recall long ago, …

Tom Walsh: You know GM's back in black when... When will we know that General Motors Corp. has fully emerged from its 30-year funk? This question arises as GM Chairman Rick Wagoner, Vice Chairman Bob Lutz and other GM brass begin walking and talking with a touch of swagger now that they've run off pesky billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, who cashed out his 10% GM stake, and brushed off SuperCEO Carlos Ghosn of Renault and Nissan in his bid to lure GM into a super-synergistic-sucker's auto alliance. Things are indeed looking up for GM, but remember, this is still a company only 11 months removed from a $10.6-billion loss in 2006. So how can we tell when GM has really turned th…
