General Motors Corp. on Monday approved a production cut at its Pontiac Assembly Center, a move that could result in as many as 500 layoffs at the factory that builds heavy-duty pickups. With sales of its big trucks hurting in a sluggish market, GM will produce nearly 20 percent fewer pickups in two shifts at the plant. Company officials are determining how many jobs will be eliminated as part of the change. Sources had said the plan is to cut about 100 full-time workers and nearly 400 temporary employees in September. GM is still working to reach a final number, officials said on Monday. "It's still a matter of discussion," GM spokesman Tom Wickham said. GM's redesig…

U.S. casts shadow on GM global surge Sharon Terlep | Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News General Motors Corp. is shattering sales records, besting competitors and making money almost everywhere in the world. Those successes will amount to little, however, if the automaker can't resuscitate sales in its money-losing North American operation -- something GM says isn't likely until at least 2008. GM sold 2.4 million vehicles around the world in the second quarter, with 1.4 million of those cars and trucks going to consumers outside the United States, according to sales data released Thursday. GM reclaimed the No. 1 global rank for the second quarter after outse…

From my local paper via the Associated Press: >>>A 24-year old tax dispute between the city and GM has ended, clearing the way for plans to sell & redevelop the company's Route 1 and 9 property where auto production ended two years ago. The two sides announced during Tuesday's City Council meeting that they have reached a settlement in which the city will pay the Detroit-based automaker $4.8 million to settle tax appeals for 2005, 2006 & 2007. The city has been in litigation with General Motors over its municipal tax assessment ever since the company appealed its 1983, 1984 & 1985 assessments. Over the years, there have been court rulings for both s…

GM cars play action heroes in 'Transformers' Ann Job | Link to Original Article @ DetNews HOLLYWOOD, Calif . -- The folks at General Motors Corp. are walking around a little starry-eyed these days, with an extra spring in their step and Hasbro toys in their hands. In a product placement coup, four GM vehicles, including a new generation Chevrolet Camaro due out in 2009, won starring roles in the heavily hyped new action flick, "Transformers." While automakers regularly wheel and deal to place their cars in films, GM's vehicles are cast as shape-shifting action stars in the expected summer blockbuster directed by Michael Bay. GM confirmed it will use the fuel-saving diesel engine on U.S. passenger cars, crossovers and light-duty trucks during a video blog by Vice Chairman Bob Lutz on GM's Web site, http://fastlane.gmblogs.com GM sources say the automaker will show a diesel engine at the Frankfurt auto show in September on an e-flex Opel Vectra. Lutz Talks Back Part II "Hey Bob...what about Buick?" Some clarification - as evidenced by this clip, this is actually the first of a four-part series featuring one-on-one interviews with Mr. Lutz that will be released over the rest of the month. FastLane editors had some technical issues, so they threw the second one up first. However, the order doesn't really matter. In this segment, Mr. Lutz assures us that both he and Buick are indeed alive. Future Buicks both in the American and Chinese markets will follow a "softer, quieter, more traditional American" design. This contrasts with Cadillac, which was described again as being edgier and more geared towards the ha…

Lutz Talks Back Part III "Hey Bob...what about Diesel?" Once again, another video interview with the Vice Chairman has been released on GM FastLance Blogs. In this segement, Mr. Lutz covers a topic many of us have been pondering ourselves - Diesel powertrains. Most notably, why the heck don't we have them here now? After reiterating much of what we knew about the stringencies of US Bin V, Tier II emissions (six times higher than Euro V standards) as well as the even higher local requirements in California and a handful of northeastern states, Mr. Lutz goes on to tell us, yes, those regs can be satisfied with urea and similar catalysizing systems. However, there is a…

GM Wants Cars to Talk – To Each Other Safety rises when cars communicate, GM says Link to Original Article @ TCC | by Richard Yarrow | (2007-07-11) Vehicle-to-vehicle communication - where cars silently talk to each other about traffic conditions further down the road - is on the way. That's the view of bosses at General Motors, who have revealed the latest details of their futuristic V2V system. Here's how it works: if there's a broken down car round a blind bend, your vehicle will know about it before you get there because one coming the other way - having already passed the blockage - will have spread the word. You get a dashboard warning and don't plow into th…

I'm in Northern California, and I've never heard GM advertise on radio, probably the most targetted of traditional media outside of niche magazines. I usually listen to NPR and contempoprary pop/alternative stations, and have never heard any car commercials other than Toyota and Lesux (those two, on the other hand, seem to blanket the airwaves with new and certified used commercials), and VW sometime back. This morning, I heard a Chevy ad on NPR promoting their alternative fuel research. I think NPR listeners may be skeptical until something like the Volt goes in to production, but I was glad to hear GM taking the initiative to reach out. Seems like GM is making progres…

GM to sell 20,000 fewer cars to fleet customers Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News General Motors Corp. said it will sell 20,000 fewer vehicles to rental-car companies this month, driving down its total sales, Bloomberg News reported today. Detroit Free Press 6/1/2007 Katie Merx Jun. 1--General Motors Corp., once the symbol of big, slow corporate America, virtually matched Toyota Motor Corp., the icon of lean manufacturing, in North American assembly plant productivity last year for the first time since it has been measured, industry research group Harbour Consulting reported Thursday. Toyota logged 22.05 hours of plant labor per vehicle assembled, while GM reported 22.15 hours, a difference of one-tenth of an hour, or just 6 minutes per vehicle. "General Motors essentially caught Toyota in vehicle assembly productivity," consultancy President Ron Harbour said. The results come at a turbulent time f…

I thought I'd take a look at the Aura web page and see how GM is selling this comparison with the Accord and Camry. http://www.saturn.com/saturn/sidebyside/index.jsp The first tactic is to compare the V6 Aura to the 4Cyl Camry and Accord. Of course they never mention fuel economy. Generally they omit all the categories where the aura is not competitive (e.g. Residual value, interior dimensions (accord has more front and back headroom/shoulder room/hip room, and front legroom (not back)), residual value, suspension, fuel economy, etc.). That is smart, and I understand to sell you want to focus on your strengths, but an item such as fuel economy is too important to omi…

We just got an email yesterday at our dealership that 2007 Torrent's and Equinox's produced between certain dates are to be sent back to General Motors for further inspection. They would not specify what the problem is, just that it is NOT a safety issue. The vehicles are to be picked up next week, sent to the nearest GM tech centre, and returned. Once I know more info, I will post it. Never have I heard of vehicles being sent back for inspection.

IL Exclusive: GM's Project Alpha Takes Shape Link to Original Article @ Edmunds DETROIT — General Motors' plan for a new family of midsize, rear-wheel-drive cars is beginning to take shape, with the lead vehicle — an RWD successor to the Pontiac G6 — penciled in for a late 2010 intro, Inside Line has learned. Here are some surrvey numbers from Autobytel.com Not sure how accurate these are but it might be worth checking them out as they are not what I expected. Hybrid owners are 40% Republican 36% Democrat 21% live in the Midwest 31% in the Northeast and 16% on the West Coast 57% are over 45 years old 49% do not have collage degrees 33% make less than $40,000 a year Now I know this most likley includes many Flex Fuel Taurus and pick up trucks in Iowa. But need less to say I still figured the tree hugging West Coasters would have been more dominate just with the Prius and Honda Hybrids. This topic doesn't seem to fit well into any of the categories, so forgive me for posting this under "GM News".. but I've got some question on the Lambda's: 1) The early complaint is that the Lambda's are so large (weighing 4700 lbs). I fully understand the minivan market for which they are targeted for requires them to have a capable third-row which necessitates the long wheelbase & weight, but are there any considerations for a short-wheelbase variant? Something like the Tahoe versus a Suburban. Virtually the same vehicle minus a row of seats. A short wheelbase Lambda might have some appeal. How flexible is the Lambda platform? Would it accomodate something …

GM has picked up the habit of putting dress up covers on their engines which succeed only to:- (1) Make the build quality look cheap -- even Hyundai has nicer and higher quality (appearing) covers. (2) Make some otherwise very good looking engines and manifolds look like a Rubbermaid trashcan. This is the latest rendition... can anyone say that the "covered" engine (below) looks sexier, higher quality or more advanced? Jeez... enough of these garbage can lids already. They are not worth $0.05. How about spending the money on say a suede leather cover for the owner's manual (or whatever) instead!

I may be the only one who cares but does anyone know if the Vibe/Matrix will be available in '08? Reason I'm asking is that we will likely be downsizing when the lease is up on our '06 Caravan in March of '08. The next-gen. Mopar minivans are simply going to be to big for us--and more importantly, we want something that gets better fuel economy. We'd like to stick with a wagon-y vehicle. I drove a Caliber and it wasn't too bad, though I started feeling claustrophobic inside of it pretty quickly (that cursed high beltline). One of the vehicles we are thinking of is the Vibe, but I don't know if it's still going to be around next spring. Anyone else know?

(May 11, 2007) - For the first time in the history of ROUSH Performance, the company is expanding into the General Motors line of autos and trucks. Up to this point, ROUSH Performance has been strictly devoted to the design, manufacture and distribution of high-performance products for Ford-based vehicles. Our engineering and manufacturing divisions already do considerable work for General Motors as well as DaimlerChrysler …

Is Michigan relevant anymore to house a couple of the world's largest auto companies? -Michigan is not supporting the automakers a whole bunch and they may get more support if they were in other states -UAW influences are too prevalent in that part of the country. Moving could be a nice way to thumb their noses at the union bunch -other carmakers are locating plants in the south, etc. where labor is more favorable -perhaps a cultural hotbed like California or a more businesslike city like New York would be more appropriate for such global companies or closer to wall st. -many Americans feel GM etc. are isolated in a state like Michigan and think of GM as a more…

GM to raise non-U.S. sales above 60% CEO Rick Wagoner says he hopes the increase doesn't come at the expense of domestic sales Greg Bensinger | Bloomberg News | Link to Original Article @ DetNews General Motors Corp. plans to increase sales outside the U.S. to more than 60 percent of the company's total, as its domestic sales decline. The automaker reached 60 percent in the first quarter because of increases in China and other emerging markets. "That number is just going to continue to grow," Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner said Friday on a conference call from New York. "I hope not by reducing our sales in the U.S." GM may lose lead to Toyota GM expects to s…

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB117629894771066330.html General Motors Corp. on Thursday posted a 90% plunge in first-quarter profit, though its loss narrowed at its core North American region, as poor earnings at GMAC Financial services weighed on the auto maker. GM, in the midst of an extensive corporate restructuring, reported net income of $62 million, or 11 cents a share, for the quarter, compared with $602 million, or $1.06 a share, a year earlier. Earnings in the latest quarter included unfavorable special items of $32 million, or six cents a share. The auto maker posted a positive automotive operating cash flow of $300 million for the quarter. The year-ago resu…

General Motors's Wuling minivans and Chevrolet Spark minicars are so popular in China that even the vehicles reserved for test drives at its Liuzhou factory have been sold. GM is hiring 500 more workers to keep up with demand. In Lordstown, Ohio, meanwhile, GM is pressing the United Auto Workers union to give up janitorial jobs. The contrasting pictures in Asia and North America show why - just 18 months after the chief executive, Rick Wagoner, had to fend off speculation the company might go bankrupt - GM stands to emerge as the strongest of the three U.S. automakers. By pushing sales in developing countries while slashing labor costs in costly markets like the United …

Jamie LaReau | Automotive News / May 2, 2007 - 4:04 pm / DETROIT -- General Motors will resume construction to prepare for vehicles on its next-generation architectures at its Lordstown, Ohio, and Fairfax (Kansas City, Kan.) plants, sources confirm. UAW leaders met today. While a local contract is not final, "things were moving along," say sources familiar with the talks. "The issues are being worked out; I don't know if they've returned to the bargaining table, but that is something that is going to happen," says a source close to GM. The source says GM's plans for the next-generation small-car platform at the Lordstown plant and the mid-sized car architecture …

http://www.automochatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=738 General Motors has put a hold on future rear-wheel-drive vehicles. "We've pushed the pause button. It's no longer full speed ahead," Vice Chairman Bob Lutz revealed in an interview. Two of the most important RWD cars in the works are the Chevy Camaro sports coupe due back late in 2008 and the full-size, RWD replacement for the Chevy Impala sedan for 2009. Both are expected to be huge sellers and contribute major profits to a GM till burdened with IOUs the last few years. "It's too late to stop Camaro, but anything after that is questionable or on the bubble," said Lutz, noting that also means Camaro derivatives -…

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- General Motors Europe's workers plan warning strikes on May 3 to press for a deal that would secure enough production volume at GM's plant in Antwerp, the carmaker's European labor leader said today. "Moreover we demand a contract guaranteeing the future of all GM Europe plants including Powertrain until the end of 2016," Klaus Franz told Reuters. He would not rule out further industrial action in order to persuade GM to build more than just 80,000 units of what will likely be a small Chevrolet planned to plug in a yawning production gap left after management decided not to build the next-generation Astra compact in Antwerp beyond 2010. Hybrids on Hold GM axes hybrid pickups until two-mode system debuts in 2008 By RICHARD TRUETT | Link to original article @ AutoWeek | Updated: 04/26/07, 10:06 am et DETROIT -- Despite rising gasoline prices, General Motors quietly has dropped the hybrid versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. GM's next hybrid pickups are due in about 18 months. The Silverado Hybrid sold for $30,040 including shipping, about $3,000 more than a V-8 powered Silverado with the same size engine and same trim. The Silverado Hybrid and the more upscale Sierra Hybrid were launched in late 2004. They were GM's first gasoline-electric hybrids. But neither truck received m…

Toyota's Gain a Plus for U.S. Automaking: Doron Levin (Update1) By Doron Levin April 26 (Bloomberg) -- The report that Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's biggest automaker, surpassed No. 1 General Motors Corp. in worldwide sales during the first quarter shouldn't be viewed as evidence of U.S. industrial decline. U.S. automaking arguably has never been stronger. That's not to say General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Corp. aren't struggling and won't soon, if ever, dominate the industry as they once did. For long-term owners of the common stocks and bonds of the U.S.-based automakers, not to mention for their workers and for the communities in…

Oh Jalopnik, gotta love them for the new photos of the 2008 Corvette and it's LS3! Just because the new Corvette LS3's not expected to be unveiled until Saturday, doesn't mean you don't deserve to see it early. Luckily some shots have already snuck out of Bowling Green of what looks to be the new engine for the 2008 big bad-ass from the bargain brand at the General. A poster over at DigitalCorvettes did the dirty work to show us the rumored 430 hp engine that we've heard will be the new standard for the '08 Corvette. It's no "Corvette SS," but whatevs. Anyway, we'll just let you look at the new n' pretty five-spoke wheels and the big side-bolstered red leather seats, an…

You don't hear enough about On-Star anymore. This is still a huge unique selling point for GM (I've heard a number GM buyers say that they'll never buy a car that doesn't have On-Star) and it's only going to get bigger as navigation systems become more common and GM continues to improve On-Star's capabilities. I seriously think this is one of GM's most under-leverged assets. http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/25/onstar-...car-navigation/

This deal has been talked about for two years, and it looks like it may finally see fruition. Demand for Chevrolets and Opels in Eastern Europe is growing by leaps and bounds, with GM shortly to open a third plant in Russia to build the Chevy Captiva. Chevrolet sales grew by 33% in Europe, to more than 100,000, in the first quarter of 2007. It is the best-selling brand in Macedonia. Opel is Croatia's best-selling brand, Croatia bordering with Serbia and both of these being former republics of Yugoslavia. With Zastava having invested more than 15 million euros recently in new presses and machinery to build its new Zastava 10 (effectively Fiat's Punto), the company has beg…

If you listen to Al Gore, we have a Global Warming problem. If you listen to the environmental activist lobby its because of companies like GM and people who buy SUVs. Now, GM is being pressured to reconsider its RWD plans because the yelpers and yanters have made Bush propose some rather ambitious CAFE goals -- of course being a Republican President and public enemy #1 to the Liberal media he'll get zero credits for it. Well, there are two issues here. One being Global Warming, the other being RWD and fuel economy. I'll cover them here and if you don't agree with my assessments please feel free to argue about it in this thread. (1) Global Warming First let me say that…

GM HOLDEN may have to increase and extend dramatically its US export program after parent company General Motors put all its US rear-wheel drive programs on hold in the face of proposed stiffer fuel economy standards. At first glance, the new standards will make it harder for GM to produce rear-wheel drive cars in the US, especially the high-performance V8 models. But GM will have the option of building the cars outside the US because the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards apply to imported cars and domestically built cars separately. GM imports most of its small cars and makes the majority of its larger cars in the US and Canada. Should GM decide not to m…

Ya know.... I'm one of GM's biggest fans... always have been.... and I love the new product they're coming out with - love the '08 CTS... the new Malibu looks great... GMT900's... can't beat 'em... but I *really* have to wonder when they're going to come out with a product that is "high mileage" competitive. It's time to take on ToyMotor where they live and breathe. When I look at the new mileage ratings (and exclude the Prius for the time being) there isn't much there to compete with the likes of the high mileage product ToyMotor sells. GM needs something that beats the Corolla. I don't care how they do it - import it -- build it at home -- or a combination thereof bu…

I know a while back it was reported that GM drivetrain was told by Bob Lutz he had their back and to work their magic. While the LaCrosse and the Impala will continue through 2008 MY at Oshawa GM Canada plant, the curtain will fall on both the Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo at mid-year, or December 2007. That's 10 or so more months of production on these cars. I guess that's to retool the portion of the Oshawa plant that will put out RWD cars. Some of you will be ecstatic. I just wish they had done a better job with these cars in the first place, allowing them to complete the full model year. Oh well.

One of Europe's top executives called yesterday for political action to tackle the damage being done to the car industry by the overvalued euro. Carl-Peter Forster, president of General Motors Europe, said the disadvantage European car manufacturers were suffering because of the high value of the euro against Far East currencies such as the yen and the Korean won had been underestimated by governments within the eurozone. He estimated that the currency difference gave Japanese car makers such as Toyota, Nissan and Honda a 3,000 to 4,000 advantage over their European rivals on each model sold. I honestly think that Toy got caught with their pants off by GM in plug-in race and they are diminishing GM's acheivement. He cannot get enough of the Toy, and its jewel of a car.
