Automotive News May 29, 2008 - 3:37 am ET UPDATED: 5/29/08 4:29 p.m. EDT DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors' top managers are working on additional restructuring measures to deal with a declining U.S. auto market and an accelerated shift from trucks to more fuel efficient vehicles, a person familiar with the plan told The Associated Press late Wednesday. The person, who requested anonymity because the plan is still being devised, would not give details of what is under discussion by Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner and his top managers. The source told the AP that GM will furlough entire shifts of workers at some truck factories and may move them to nearby car plants…

GM has reached a deal on the local contract with UAW Local 31 at the plant Tuesday evening , company spokesman Dan Flores said. We're certainly pleased that we have a tentative agreement , Flores said. "Obviously , Malibu and Aura are very important products for us." Industry analysts have said the strike in Kansas City and one at a key crossover vehicle plant in Delta Township ,Michigan(the Lambda's) were designed to draw GM into a long , bitter strike by the UAW against parts maker American Axle. Union officials , including UAW President Ron Gettelfinger , denied any connection and said the strikes were over local contract disputes. The UAW and American Axle reach…

David Barkholz Automotive News April 22, 2008 - 4:28 pm ET General Motors has won a two-day reprieve from a possible UAW local strike of its key Chevrolet Malibu assembly plant in Kansas City, Kan. Officials at UAW Local 31 agreed to allow negotiations to extend into Thursday, April 24, before a decision is made whether to walk out, said Local 31 President Jeff Manning. He said talks are progressing slowly. The 2,600 workers at GM's Fairfax assembly plant would not approve what GM is offering on some key issues, including seniority rights and job security. By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS 16 January 2008 GENERAL MOTORS has confirmed that a VE Commodore-based Monaro is a non-starter for now, as Holden is set to lead any pending development of the smaller rear-drive Torana. Speaking at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, GM ‘car czar’ Bob Lutz sounded the Monaro’s death knell loud and clear. “I think (the Monaro/Pontiac GTO) is gone for now,” Mr Lutz said. “We’ve got nothing in the product plan right now like that. We’d like to have, but you can’t do everything.” However, the ebullient senior GM executive then went on to raise hopes that the Holden-developed but Canadian-built Chevrolet Camaro – due to be la…

Linkity What's difficult to understand is why Detroit's automakers lose billions of dollars making cars and trucks here, while competitors like Toyota, Honda, BMW and Mercedes, who build them here too, make a fortune at it. They're all building new plants or expanding production at the old ones while Detroit is shutting factories. General Motors, for example, reported a loss of $39 billion for last year, and my guess is that Toyota will have an operating profit approaching $20 billion for its March 31 fiscal year, with the North American operations the greatest contributor to that. Here's my explanation: Rebates. Detroit has to pay buyers t…

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=new...id=amu7IIYCoDYQ Okay, I've been a little skeptical at how car companies interpret and report their own costs for a long time, so it's natural for me to really wonder how in the hell a company the size of GM, which still sells quite a few cars btw, can go from making profits pretty consistently to almost sudden death in 1 year (think 2004 to 2005)? I have to agree with the commentary for the most part - but haven't we been hearing this doom and gloom story about GM losing market share and going bankrupt , not being competitive, etc, etc, for a very long time? Here it is, 2008, and GM is still here. Something else I th…

Our friends over at Pickuptruck.com have learned that Pontiac will debut a production-ready ST pickup at this year's New York Auto Show in late March. The Pontiac ST pickup is based on the Holden VE Ute that recently debuted in Australia, and since development of the vehicle consists mainly of grafting the Pontiac G8 front clip onto the Holden VE Ute, the business case for the vehicle is a no-brainer. What did stand between the Pontiac ST pickup and production was the U.S. exchange rate between the Australian and U.S. dollar, but apparently the difference isn't as bad as once thought and the price of the ST won't be out of reach for its target market. Pickuptruck.com also…

On February 17, 2008, the San Francisco Chronicle printed an interview with GM's Chairman and CEO, Rick Wagoner. There are a number of interesting questions, such as a query about his job performance: "Q: When you became CEO, you had four main goals. One was to develop a sense of urgency for GM. The second was to become innovative. Thirdly, stretch beyond your limits or imagined limits and act as a single company. Do you feel you are delivering on that? Basically, the last one talks about the fact that we tended to run our business as a U.S. business, Europe business, etc. To be competitive, and to take advantage of the be…

It’s a pleasure to be back at the Automotive News World Congress. It’s been five years since I’ve spoken here, which seems unbelievable to me, but it’s true. From CAR Magazine - Opel cans Calibra Mk2 In short, Lutz proposed the idea as a way to get more utilization out of the Alpha platform, but GME nixed it based on Europe's upcoming CO2 regulations. That is, a rear-drive car is naturally less efficient than a comparable front-driver, and hence produces more CO2 pollution - it's basically Europe's version of CAFE regs. Lutz also noted that the Alpha-based small Caddy would be imported to Europe regardless when it appears. The comments under the article basically seem to rag on Lutz for trying to push an "inefficient" product on Europeans - I fail to see how it's any more wasteful than the supremely overweight BMW 1-series…

Rick Kranz Automotive News January 28, 2008 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — Never mind fuel cells, plug-ins or diesels. To achieve quick improvements in fuel economy, General Motors is adopting an off-the-shelf technology: small engines with turbochargers. Next year GM will introduce a turbocharged 1.4-liter gasoline engine for small U.S. cars. The Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Astra are candidates for the engine, which is available without a turbocharger in the European Opel Astra. GM engineering chief Jim Queen confirmed the company's plans to use the powertrain and said it could be used in mid-sized vehicles, too. "You're going to see turbocharged four-cylinders in…

If everyone else is going to build cars like Tata's headline-grabbing Nano, GM's going to pile on, too. The Lutz cites GM's part-ownership stake in Wuling Motors, a Chinese manufacturer of sub-$3,000 utility vehicles as a possible source of a GM Nano competitor. Lutz went on to say that one way to make an inexpensive car for the developing world is to repurpose a legacy platform that has become obsolete. The tooling and design will have long been paid off, and there'll be plenty of experience from the manufacturing side, too. Read the whole article here.

DETROIT — Backed by a hefty $300-million launch marketing campaign, the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu reportedly is quickly streaming out the doors of the dealerships nationwide that have been fortunate enough to get a few of the hot-selling models. Evaluations of Malibu's initial sales performance necessarily are just anecdotal at this early point, because it has been officially available only for less than a month and is still just beginning to trickle into most showrooms. But GM spokesman John McDonald confirms that Malibu "has had very fast turn rates" that have been contributed to "by limited supply at the start of the system fill." The nation's top seller of the old Malib…

After reading the following article, it seems like no wonder that Bob Lutz has been so bullish on E-85 ethanol in the press recently, and not too enthusiastic on diesel. Startup Says It Can Make Ethanol for $1 a Gallon, and Without Corn By Chuck Squatriglia www.wired.com A biofuel startup in Illinois can make ethanol from just about anything organic for less than $1 per gallon, and it wouldn't interfere with food supplies, company officials said. Coskata, which is backed by General Motors and other investors, uses bacteria to convert almost any organic material, from corn husks (but not the corn itself) to municipal trash, into ethanol. "It's not five years aw…

From today's Globe & Mail newspaper. GM's move south a blow to Ontario Rear-wheel-drive cars scrapped or moved to Michigan; company blames new fuel economy rules GREG KEENAN January 24, 2008 at 12:00 AM EST General Motors Corp. has scrapped plans to build some rear-wheel-drive cars at its giant operations in Oshawa, Ont., a move that could threaten the long-term future of the largest vehicle assembly plant in Canada and thousands of jobs. The auto maker has scuttled the rear-wheel-drive version of the Chevrolet Impala, which was scheduled to represent half the output of a leading-edge flexible assembly plant now under construction in Oshawa, industry so…

General Motors is considering building a micro-premium car, a new report finds. The model — which is being considered in the wake of new CAFE regulations and $100 a barrel oil — would compete against the MINI Cooper, BMW 1-series and Audi A3. However, GM is still deciding which architecture to use in the new car. The Detroit automaker recently announced that it will build a production a version of the Beat concept in the coming years, but its fuel-efficient front-drive setup wouldn't translate well into a driver-focused premium package. The Kappa platform remains a possibility — the same that underpins the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice — as does a new small rear-wheel…

More Zeta info from Go Auto: Come in Crewman BIGGER AND BETTER IN ’08 By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS in DETROIT GENERAL Motors product czar Bob Lutz has revealed that GM is set to display a VE-based SUV in the form of a four-door utility. Speaking to Australian media at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week, Mr Lutz hinted that it might herald the unexpected return of the Crewman dual-cab ute in Australia, not to mention a new export opportunity to the United States for Holden. “We will have a ute concept at the NY show, but that is going to be badged GMC,” he said. “That is a global design study – and a very interesting study in that it is…

Some interesting tidbits! General Motors held a conference with analysts today in which it outlined the automaker's turnaround progress and plans for 2008, the result of which is a press release (after the jump) that is the most boring piece of literature ever to be read. We tried, and were comatose by the first set of bullet points. Those who soldiered on, however, discovered that GM's cost-cutting plans for 2008 include offering worker buyouts to 46,000 eligible employees and potentially closing more facilities. Follow the jump for the skinny on the details, as well as the official snooze-inducing press release from GM. [source: GM, The Detroit News] The new wor…

Article GM Launches Partnership With Ethanol Firm Coskata By LAUREN ETTER January 14, 2008 General Motors Corp. announced Sunday that it is partnering with a new cellulosic ethanol company, the most recent move by the automaker to boost its green credentials and a sign the race to produce fuel out of waste is intensifying. The Illinois-based company, Coskata, Inc. is one of nine cellulosic ethanol companies backed by billionaire investor Vinod Khosla and is one of more than a dozen companies in the U.S. that are rushing to develop a way to efficiently produce cellulosic ethanol. Jamie LaReau Automotive News January 13, 2008 - 5:43 pm ET DETROIT -- General Motors will announce the details of phase two of its attrition plans soon. The plan would eliminate more hourly jobs this year, said CEO Rick Wagoner. GM is working with the UAW on the second part of an attrition program announced late last year after reaching a contract agreement with the union. Wagoner would not say how many jobs will be eliminated in this round because GM is still working on the program. The plan will target workers close to retirement age. They would be given a buyout package offer, and those who take it likely would be replaced eventually by lower-paid, younger…

Jamie LaReau Automotive News January 13, 2008 - 1:45 pm ET UPDATED: 1/13/08 3:17 p.m. DETROIT -- General Motors is willing to boost incentive spending in 2008, says Mark LaNeve, vice president of North American vehicle sales, service and marketing. He says he believes that U.S. vehicle sales in 2008 will be flat because manufacturers will likely spend more on incentives to keep it around 16 million. GM in the past has been known to spend more on incentives than some of its competitors. "We've broken that cycle of incentive spending," LaNeve said, noting that buyers' reasons for choosing GM have evolved from a great deal to a great product. "But you sti…

In short summation... Velite - 'Prioritized out' as a result of increased spending towards fuel-efficiency and alternative fuel/propulsion Bel Air - Not a 'compellingly-beautiful car' to fund. Reuters January 11, 09:05 CET SHANGHAI (Reuters) -- General Motors Corp said today its vehicle sales in Asia Pacific grew 15.1 percent in 2007, helped largely by strong demand in mainland China. The top US automaker sold a record 1.44 million vehicles in Asia, boosting its market share in the region to an estimated 6.9 percent, up from 6.5 percent in 2006, it said in a statement. Sales in China rose 18.5 percent to a record 1.03 million vehicles during the period. In Korea, domestic sales of GM and GM Daewoo products hit an all-time high of 131,040 units, while exports of vehicles by GM Daewoo rose to more than 820,000 units, it said, without providing comparat…

GM Asks The World: "What's Next?" DETROIT - What should power the world's vehicles in 20 years? How can personal transportation become more sustainable in an age of increasing global competition for resources? What role will the automotive industry play in developing markets? Decisions on issues like these will largely shape transportation in the 21st century. To speed the process, GM will mark its 100th anniversary by launching a global dialogue through an initiative called GMnext. "We're starting our second century at a time of fundamental change in the auto industry," said GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner. "We'll use GMnext to introduce some of our ideas for addr…

Lutz Talks Back Part IV "Hey Bob...what's the big deal about the Triplets" In the fourth in what is likely the final installment of GM FastLane Blogs' exclusive one-on-one sitdowns with Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, the public face of General Motors tackles the cognative dissonance many of us have experienced about why Chevrolet unveiled three very progressive minicompacts at the recent New York Intl Auto Show - and even had us vote for out favorite - while dismissing them as products that won't be built either in America or for America a short time later. Mr. Lutz immediately clarifies that, while the Triplets themselves were not designed with American safety standards i…

How is this not on the main page? http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline/4007 Latest word is that the successor to the GM Northstar V8 engine has been killed, and that the Northstar may be replaced by GM's excellent 3.6L V6. That engine, the direct-injection DOHC 3.6, puts out 302 horsepower, which is uncomfortably close to the 320 horespower that the 4.6L Northstar puts out. The 3.6 also gets two mpg better gas mileage than Northstar V8. This raises question about the Lambda platforn CUVs (GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave and Saturn Outlook), as a version of the Northstar was slated for those vehicles. The Northstar is scheduled to be built until 2010, but not after that. …

Jamie LaReau Automotive News January 3, 2008 - 11:32 am ET DETROIT - General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner says the automaker expects overall U.S. auto sales to hold roughly flat in 2008 with the depressed levels of 2007 even as global sales hit a new high. "There are some obvious reasons for concern, but on balance I suspect '08 will be similar to '07 in total, although likely weaker in the first half and stronger in the second," Wagoner wrote in response to a question on his outlook for U.S. vehicle sales. He added: "In the U.S., we expect (overall sales in the) low 16 millions, but some risk given the economic background." Wagoner addressed reporters in an onl…

Jamie LaReau Automotive News January 2, 2008 - 4:42 pm ET DETROIT -- General Motors will shift its advertising emphasis from full-sized pickups and SUVs to cars and small SUVs in 2008. The automaker also will highlight its fuel economy and eco-friendliness, says Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president of North American vehicle sales, service and marketing. GM also will continue the shift from traditional to digital advertising in 2008, LaNeve says. GM still believes the full-sized light-truck market is strong and will hold its position in that segment, LaNeve says. But new GM advertising will build upon the momentum of recent launches such as the Chevrolet Malibu …

Rick Kranz Automotive News December 7, 2007 - 10:33 am ET SAN DIEGO — A massive change to General Motors’ future product plans is expected if the 35 mpg CAFÉ fleet average favored by Congress is enacted into law. “The minute we have confirmation of the 35 mpg rule, that is the point where we go through all of our forward product plans and probably introduce, frankly, massive restructuring of the product plan,” said GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz. “A 35 mpg fleet mix means there is a bunch of stuff out there that is going to have to be 40 and 50 mpg.” The House bill passed last month calls for a 35 mpg nationwide fleet average by 2020, roughly a 40 percent increas…

Link to Article GM Hits Million-Sales Mark in China Date posted: 12-21-2007 SHANGHAI, China — When General Motors edged Ford Motor more than 10 years ago to become the preferred partner of Shanghai Automotive, critics maintained that it would take decades for GM to recoup its initial $3 billion investment in the Shanghai GM venture and the jointly operated Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC). Turns out it only took a single decade. In fact, GM's China operations have been profitable since the early years. And now, with SGM and PATAC marking their 10th anniversaries in 2007, GM has achieved an even more remarkable milestone: It has become the first glob…

Jamie LaReau Automotive News December 24, 2007 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — Look for General Motors to develop more products for North America in Brazil. This year GM spent $500 million on its Brazilian unit to develop small cars and to expand its product development center there. GM also designated Brazil as its lead center for designing mid-sized trucks. The cars and mid-sized trucks are intended for emerging markets, but that could change soon. The Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Buick Divisions have all celebrated their respective centennials during the last decade. These were unforgettable events with highly visible participation and support by General Motors itself. In 2003, we saw Ford Motor Co. celebrate its centennial with a grand gathering in Dearborn. But we've heard nothing regarding General Motors' plans to celebrate its own centennial next year, and GM enthusiasts have been hoping for some indication that the company will plan an appropriate event. The Buick Club of America will return to Buick's hometown of …

The companies did not disclose terms of the deal, which they expect to close on in 2008. Analysts have estimated the unit, which includes the GMC TopKick and Chevrolet Kodiak, to be worth about $500 million with annual revenue of $2 billion. G.M. has been shedding assets outside of its core operations to increase liquidity and focus on its turnaround. In the last year, it has sold controll…

GM to widely incorporate Bluetooth by 2009 Link to Autoblog In a reader Q&A session at the GM FYI Blog, Phil Colley of GM Performance Parts responded to a question about GM's dearth of in-car Bluetooth offerings, saying that the General will soon undertake the "broadest rollout of Bluetooth in the industry," with the technology appearing in 30 vehicles across the GM range by MY '09. So, if you want Bluetooth in your new Chevy, you still have to wait a little longer, but at least you know the General's going to get with the program soon enough.
