I have often remarked on the fact that though I have owned many cars, I have never owned a Corvette or a convertible. Some of you have probably heard me joke that someday I might have to combine the two. Well, about a decade or so ago I left a note in a mailbox at a house where a Corvette convertible had long been siting in the driveway under a tarp. Never heard a word about it. Eventually, the car disappeared and I wondered what became of it. So, a few days ago I get a phone call... It's the owner of the Vette wondering if I might still be interested! We are negotiating.

"It's different now" __ Conway Twitty __ 'Goodbye Time' Irony rocks. I've recently learned that, in ~1 year, I'll lose the year-round garage storage (heated in winters) that I've appreciated the last 10+ years. The couple that owns the house, building & property is moving to SC. I will not have the funds needed to buy the place, though I would LOVE to live there. So, since other similar storage options in the area are more expensive, unemployment continues & medical bills are still due ... it's probably time to sell my MCs. Yep, life is still good. It's just frustrating to watch things for which I've worked hard disappear due to no fault of my own. At leas…

PROJECT ACHIEVA It is coming up on 3 months since I bought my 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva S. Here is an update on some of the things I have done in that time. First up, was a complete cleanup of the engine bay. Here is what it looked like on June 4th (2 days after I got it): And here it is August 15th (with new alternator and battery): I spent a few hours every morning cleaning by hand. A labour of love...and not quite finished yet. The hood was the hardest part (in terms of bending to get to all the small spots) I also added some blue LED bulbs for the footwell lights. They add a nice touch complementing the cars colour. I hope to get better ones t…

gonna pick up the new (and i do mean new) car either late tonight or Friday noon. they gotta bring it back from IOWAY. I love my Aztek, gonna miss it, but it was time. 113,600 or so. Decided not to expend a few thousand on all the things it needed or should have in the next 12 months to ensure it would be worth keeping another 2-3 years. Didn't want to chance the tranny up and giving out since its been temperamental and foreshadowing its demise. And it turns out got a decent amount on trade for it as well. We rode it hard and put it away wet. When i subtracted what I am getting from it for what I paid, it was 12,900 dollars spent for 113,600 +/- miles. I don't t…

Well the weather's getting nice and that means its project time. For my car the first and foremost project is getting a/c system revamped before summer. I want air conditioning in my car. That of course means the whole dash has to come out to replace the evaporator core. Not a job I'm looking forward to doing. Most likely I'm also going to replace the heater core while I'm there. Preventative maintenance. Not counting the heater core, it looks like this job will run $400-$500 in parts. Evaporator core, expansion valve, dryer, compressor, and probably the low pressure line. It'll basically be all-new when done. For summer I want to replace the rear struts, as well as th…

Initial pictures of the new vette 2011 Grand Sport Corvette Manual Transmission Dual mode exhaust 2LT trim level It's a work in progress, going to change the headlights to a dark grey (cyber grey), and tint the windows. That chrome GS badge is also going to have to be changed. Taking it to a hpde at a road course near chicago next weekend. This car is amazing; some of GM's finest work. Zora would certainly be proud. The handling and grip is insane, certainly helped by the 325 wide rear tires. The LS3 does not disappoint.

Well the poor old Shadow is basically at the end of its life. The body rot is pretty horrendous and its having issues overheating, along with lots of other issues that have crept up lately. So with that he decided it was time for a new car. He had been looking for a second gen Grand Cherokee but in the end settled with something quite different: a 1999 Toyota Camry V6 for $4,500. I think he did quite well. It's got just over 100,000 miles. Body is in great shape. No rust at all. Interior is very clean and in good shape except for a few small things (missing radio button). The V6 is very smooth and might as well be brand new by the way it sounds. Very peppy too. The tran…

...remember this car? Dad bought it back in '03, I think. I drove it first for my senior year of high school. Dad used it as a spare. Then my brother used it until he bought a Regal. In the meantime, it's remained a spare. 1993 Fleetwood Brougham, Cotillion White with Garnet Red interior. Factory white vinyl top. Has about 110k now. They rarely use or drive it, just takes up space. Still looks great but with age needs some stuff. The rear air ride shocks went out many years back. It sits fine with just a slight rear end drop but doesn't like to be loaded up. Runs strong with the TBI 350 and 4-speed. A/C needs recharged and figure out where the old refrigerant leaks …

My brother is a moron who can't spend money properly. So he bought a $h!ty VW Cabriolet from 1990 with busted mechanicals for a grand. He didn't even change the oil that sat in the car for nearly a decade and the water pump didn't function. So naturally, he nearly died while driving it. Because he's an idiot. I decided to find him something that would run properly, and reliable. The fringe benefit is that his pathetic sack of organs won't end up in anyone else's body. I'm doing the public a favour. So I found this: Clean, inside and out, with about 150,000kms (~95,000 miles). It's a 1993 EX-L, so it's loaded and has a sunroof. Best of all, it …

Dad has had his '96 Legacy wagon since summer of '08, and for a $1000 Craigslist find...still one of the best cars ever in the family, period. Insane AWD traction, solidly built, and efficient 2.2L. Bought it with 182k, got over 200k now I think, but in recent months now after no issues has been overheating again & again. Researching the boxer I knew headgaskets were a common item on the 2.5L engine and likely also on the 2.2L, just not as much so. With so many miles and so many years, most likely why. Rather than spend the money to repair, Craigslist time it was again. Called me a month back saying he wished he could find a Baja. Same car but liked the idea of the t…

OK so here's the premise I want to have the most utility using the least amount of fuel at the lowest cost with the most comfort for 5-6 people. Some of you with good memories will remember that I posted a link about 6 years ago of the Mad Maxx 10HP Chevy. A single cylinder diesel Yanmar air cooled clone engine coupled to the GEO Metro's manual 5spd via a Comet CVT.http://www.utterpower.com/10hp_chevy.htm I even talked to the Engineer for about 25 min long distance to get a better understanding of such a conversion. ...and now Zoom Zoom daily. Surprise Since I started working at the Ford, Mazda, Nissan and Hyundai dealer in July, I've gotten to experience and try out a lot of vehicles, see what real customers say about them and see them in service. I started in Nissan, then moved to Mazda and have been with them ever since. It's a complete experience, and the owner's are more fanatical than any I've seen of the brands on sight, and the performance, quality, etc. Mazda was a brand I honestly didn't know much about before, but became all about very quickly. First few days I got to take a new CX-9 Grand Touring for some errands and was wow'd. Months went by, and so did the Avalanche.…

22 feet of project to be exact! I figured I needed a "more mature" motorhome so I picked this up- 48,000 original miles and a slightly warmed over 440, new tires, everything is actually great shape EXCEPT the last owner threw out the sofa and swivel chairs. So I'm plugging away and making lists, but drivetrain will be the most important upgrade as far as I can tell....

Just purchased a 2011 Silverado 6.2 with the NHT Max Trailering Package last Wednesday. The truck is perfect and smooth in every way. I had an 09 with the 5.3 & 4spd trans that I traded for this truck. I was having some trouble with it lately so I decided to trade up. I looked at other Brand's, but I couldn't find anything I liked as much as GM's Trucks. Here are some pictures:

Finally got around to dropping the fuel tank in my dad's old Dodge. Per Murphey's law, it was chock full of gas and took forever to drain, but the job is done and the tank out. Along the way I discovered what was causing the car to stall and not restart. Although we suspected that crud in the tank ws causing the problem, the actual cause was a bit of a surprise. Yes, there was a fair amount of sediment in the gas - but the real problem became obvious as I poured the last of the fuel from the tank. An approximately 2"inch square chunk of an old leaf flowed out of the filler neck as I tipped it up! That'll stop the fuel delivery in a hurry. So next will be having the tank…

A common source of kvetching from my brother since he began driving the Regal was that its OEM CD/Cassette stereo doesn't have an AUX jack for iPod purposes. Double-DIN sized head units that look like they fit with the car are more expensive and theft magnets. They also would sacrifice the functionality of the redundant steering wheel controls. Casette and FM modulators always seem to leave something in the audio quality department as well. Then, not too long ago, I was watching Saabkyle04 on YouTube review his new 1995 Roadmaster Limited and I noticed he managed to get his hands on a Buick Monsoon Audio stereo that had been refurbished and in this process had an AUX ja…

And 2011 Buick LaCrosse CXL V-6 in White Diamond Pearl in. First Buick I have ever owned and my wife loves it. And here is an interesting "Quiet Tuning" that I found. In the wheel wells which usually have just black plastic in the LaCrosse there is some padding material set up to absorb some of the road noise from the tires and road.

So as I posted in the "how much car can you afford?" thread, the old '95 Olds LSS hit the bucket and I had to find something. Originally I was really leaning towards the Cruze ECO. However, after driving a 2011 Camaro, I couldn't resist upgrading. It's black/black, V6/6-speed manual. Originally I thought I wanted a 1LT with a few options, but there were none within 3 hours of where I live (apparently no one wants V6/manual). So after realizing the 2LT was only about $700 more than the 1LT equipped how I would want it, I went searching for a 2LT with manual transmission. I found one about 75 miles away and contacted the local dealer about it. It was also the only 2LT/man…

Well, I done did it. Again. I took delivery of my 2011 Ford Fiesta SE hatch this evening after work. Tuxedo Black Metallic with black and blue interior, 5 speed manual transmission. So... I was originally searching for a Grand Prix GTP Comp-G, as some of you may know. I had my preferred dealership looking for one, but it had been a few weeks. I decided to check in to see how the search was going. Upon pulling in, this red car catches the corner of my eye. It's sitting in the far lot and looks to be new. "Is that a... Legacy? Oh... I think it is. Wait... *catches sight of a hood scoop* Thats a GT!" Closer inspection reveals it is, indeed, a 2.5GT and it is fresh off the truck with the auction stickers still displayed. "This just might do." After some talks confirmed that they still haven't found my car of choice, I automatically ask about the Legacy. …

Great idea, this. Post what parts you're looking for so fellow members can keep an eye out at their local yards. If possible, it'd be helpful to be specific of what you need, where it's located, what year range (if applicable), and anything else you can think of to help your fellow scavenger.

So... I have a broken '70 Catalina 4 door hardtop. I picked it up about 10 years ago as a parts car, for its drivetrain. It was hit pretty hard in the front... but I still drove it home. I was surprised by how nice the interior/body was, and didn't have the heart to part it out immediately. The engine/tranny is still coming out, though. A little bit later I got a '70 Bonneville parts car... it was a rustbucket, and it was promptly disassembled. While looking at the two cars, it was obvious I could fix at least one car from the two. The major problem with the Catalina is the front frame horns... so I saved the horns from the Bonneville, in case I was going to attemp…

Well with Spring kinda sorta here its time to get down to business. Lots to do for both cars. This thread will serve as a reference for part numbers and information as I get them. This car is, in fact, the definition of the title. I'm going to keep it well after it's paid off, but perhaps, after this one is paid for, I'll buy a white R/T in some form to keep it company. Better photos are to come (maybe I'll get a custom tag for this one).

I haven't posted on here in a long time, but thought I'd post a picture of our new 2011 VW GTI. My wife traded in her G35 earlier this month. She wanted something "fun and zippy" - of course the first thing out of my mouth was "GTI!". We test drove a 2011 Mazda Speed 3 but ultimately ended up with the VW. Also in the background is my 68 Impala (which I hate to say I really haven't been keeping up with) and the trusty 08 Vue.

Hello all, Long time no post. I still stalk but don't engage much. There's not much in the automotive world that I am much passionate about anymore - so I'm still paying attention, but not too engaged. Love to see Toyota implode but hate to see belief that Hyundai is the second coming. I've buried myself in history and politics (ugh!)... but enough about me. I just wanted to throw out a pic of my new ride - a 2011 GMC Terrain SLT2 3.0 FWD in Steel Blue Metallic. It has basically every option but AWD and Nav/monitors. I traded in my 2006 Malibu MAXX SS - which served me well and I got good $ on a trade because it only has 32,000 miles on it. Plus the GM card bump a…

Some of you have followed my new car trades over the past few years: 2001 Alero, 2002 Sentra SE-R, 2004 Grand Prix, 2006 Mariner Premier, 2007 Civic Si, 2008 Sierra WT, 2010 GTI.... The GTI was just too harsh for my taste, so I test drove the '11 Buick Regal, Lacrosse, Acura TSX, and TL. I researched (but did not drive) Avalon, G37, Lexus ES, Lincoln MKZ. Now there's a brand new 2010 Acura TL (Tech Pkg) in the garage. Bold, polarizing styling...yes. But overall, it's not much more dramatic than the '04 Grand Prix. One factor which attracted me to the TL: it feels like a luxurious, refined version of the GP, which was my favorite car of all time. So here we go! I …

Leaving work yesterday, the check engine light in my Jeep came on (only the 2nd time in 112k miles). Got home, pulled the code, and it's an OBDII P0306 code, misfire in cylinder 6. Interesting, because I had the plugs replaced last Saturday. Since about Wednesday, I'd noticed a bit of driveline roughness when moving and when sitting at a light in gear. The check engine light stayed on since then. Today after lunch, started and the check engine light didn't come on. Don't seem to notice as much roughness afterwards. Strange. Started and shut down twice since then, light still off. Thinking about taking it back to the shop Monday and explaining what I saw. I ha…

About a month ago, I found an antique Chevy for sale on Craigslist, and, it was not far from my house. My wife and I went to look at it, and, ended up buying it. Its a 1948 Chevy Fleetmaster 2 door Town Sedan in really nice shape. Under its hood is the original 48 90 HP inline 216 CID 6. It's fully equipped for its time - has a radio, heater/defroster, and a clock - all original. We've had her at 5 local car shows so far, and, scored a couple of trophies. I'm enjoying wrenching on and driving a car that was built when I was 2 years old. Regards: Oldengineer

2006 GMC Envoy SLT 4WD (Summit White, Ebony Leather) Friday night, I traded-in the '96 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and took delivery of this GM Certified '06 GMC Envoy. I gotta to say that while I loved the FWB, and wanted one for many, many years, I'm a truck guy true-and-true and could not be happier now that I'm back in a GMC. After our leasing experience with a 2005 GMC Envoy SLT 4WD (August '05 - June '08), I missed the Envoy the last year & a half and have been searching one out. Enter caddycruiser (Derek) and his recommendation of Pointe Pontiac-Buick-GMC in southern NJ (way south!), and two-three weeks later I take delivery. Friday night was the beginni…

This car was bought to teach my daughters how to drive in however . . . Marie (named after her first and original owner) was a rare find. In 1984 Grandma Marie's (not mine) 1968 Chevy was rusting out and was in need of many repairs. She drove to the local Chevrolet Dealer with Grandpa to get a new Chevrolet only to find ones that had more luxury features than she wanted to deal with, so she ordered Marie just the way she wanted her; 4-cyl. (Iron Duke), 4 speed manual, Air Conditioning and a rear defroster. Over the next 20 years Marie was driven 259k miles without a single major part replacement, including her clutch plate, engine, starter, steering rack, etc. Her fi…

Click Here For The Full Gallery I finally uploaded a gallery of my work on the Golf. All photos are in mostly sequential order with captions to note the progress. It took me 10 months from when I bought it at the end of November to when I got it inspected at the start of this month. There was alot of down time in between the work I did. Total working time was about a month. Started out as a $500 purchase... I've spent of total of roughly $2,000. To be honest, $400 of that was lost to a scam unfortunately, and then another $400 can be accounted for with parts I bought and decided not to use. Overall, there's about $1,000- $1300 in the car itself. I haven't quite worked ou…
