TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp. , the world's second-largest auto maker, said on Tuesday it would recall a total of about 1 million vehicles globally to replace faulty intermediate shafts and sliding yokes. In a filing with Japan's Transport Ministry, the company said it would recall a total of 565,756 vehicles in Japan, including Wish, Isis, Prius and other cars built between September 2002 and November 2005. full article here Scion is bringing out a new "tuner model" for the tc. It will cost $1400 less than the normal model. It will feature steel wheels, the sunroof won't open, exterior colors will be limited to 4, cheap steering wheel and interior, etc. It is supposed to appeal to kids who seriously want to coustomize them. Obviously it will also appeal to cheap skates like me. Scion doesn't want that to happen. Perhaps I should buy one, get some plaid bermuda shorts, black support socks, and sandals. At 60 years old, 300 pounds and no hair, I will single handidly kill their coolness.

I'm sure you guys have seen the recent Toyota Tundra commercial. Basically it says it's like the most reliable truck on the road because it's been "factory tested" Kinda funny that they can't back that up with real world experience like the other makers can (excluding Nissan).

I was thinking... well lets take a look at this i havent seen one up close and in person yet. so lets take a good look at this toyota... as i got closer, i started to question that it was a camry... keeping in mind its red, a color that often makes things look larger then they accually are. as i got closer i started thinking, is this really a camry... it looks more like the size of a corolla, and as i started looking at the front end and the interior space, i start thinking... well i wasnt aware of a redesign on the corolla quite yet... maybe its a yaris... well, its a bit big for a yaris i suppose... its probably a corol…

I like reading this guy, but he definitely has a problem with the domestics. Unless you really need to save/get a thrill out of saving $30 per month in gas or you need a hatchback (with no folding split rear seat), I don't see why one would choose a Yaris over a Cobalt LS coupe for about the same money. I've never driven either, but I have the sense that the Cobalt is a tad quieter and more comfortable. Plus you get longer roadside assistance with Cobalt. The Toyota dealers will not give the Yaris away like Chevy dealers will the Cobalt since the Yaris is made in Japan and units are likely constrained. I just don't see it from this angle. http://www.thetruthaboutcar…

The Toyota Camry isn't the Frank Sinatra of the auto market (Perry Como's more like it), but it is possible to write about the best-selling car in the U.S. without actually driving it, or seeing it, or even knowing anything about the latest version that is just now coming onto the market. I Am Hybrid, Hear Me Roar Toyota is thinking of taking a different approach when it comes to the styling of their hybrid vehicles. The reason being their recent hybrids haven't been received as hot a reception as their most famous and best-selling hybrid vehicle, the Prius. The lack of sufficent styling differentiation between the normal gas and hybrid counterparts is being seen as the reason. Read on to learn what methods Toyota may use to upplay their hybrids. You heard it here first, now here's comfirmation of the new Camry's transmission troubles: Credit: TCC Toyota Recalling Camry The newest edition of the Toyota Camry is being recalled for a problem with the transmission. The problem, Toyota says, involved only a half-percent of Camrys built thus far for the 2007 model year. The new six-speed automatic transmission could lose second and sixth gear during operation. Toyota told Reuters the vehicle still will operate even if the gears are lost, and that the problem usually happens within the first 500 miles of use.

2007 Lexus ES350 Relax, it’s an ES350. by Conor Twomey (2006-04-21) Sometimes I have to remind myself that not everyone sees cars the same way I do. Many people value comfort and refinement above all else and could care less for steering feel and throttle response. Indeed, it's more than just "some people." There are a LOT of you comfort-loving folk out there and Lexus knows you better than any other carmaker. While ze Germans continue to assume that everyone in the market for an entry-level prestige model want a cramped sports sedan, Lexus has successfully peddled five generations of ES models as entry-level luxury cars for buyers who want Lexus' legendary quality,…

You know I have to say I rather like the new Toyota Yaris, particularly the sedan in "S" trim. It's cute, like a baby Camry. It's only got one flaw. Why oh why did Toyota yet again stick the guage pods in the center of the flippin' dashboard?! I mean seriously, it's such a stupid place to put them, you have to look down and away from the road to check them. Everyone gripes about them, I'm sure Saturn won't do it again with the next Ion. It just baffles me why Toyota is so dumb. Oh well.

Toyota's Tundra Is Probed by U.S. for Steering Flaw (Update1) April 17 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s 2004 Tundra pickups are being investigated by U.S. safety regulators after more reports of a steering-system defect that led to a recall last year of 790,000 of the automaker's vehicles. The inquiry covers 95,000 Tundras built after Sept. 30, 2003, the last manufacturing date for vehicles in the recall last May, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today said on its Web site. The Washington-based agency said it received four additional reports that a ball joint in the front suspension broke, causing drivers to lose control. Toyota recalled some 2002 …

Toyota fails to build a better Corolla By Ed Hellwig Email Date posted: 04-06-2006 Ten years ago an inexpensive, comfortable, well-built car like the 2007 Toyota Yaris would have been a slam dunk. In fact, it was a slam dunk. It was called the Corolla and it was one of the best-selling compact sedans of its time. But over the last decade, compact sedan buyers got greedy. They asked for more room, better features and increased horsepower. Toyota listened, building a larger Corolla with more standard features and a bigger engine. Now with gas prices at nearly $3 a gallon, those same buyers suddenly have a conscience. They've joined Greenpeace, bought hemp socks and sta…

A new cruiser for the kids By Karl Brauer Date posted: 01-01-2006 If your first thought when gazing at the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser is something along the lines of, "Oh great, another retro vehicle," you're not alone. Can Tundra overcome Domestic loyalty? Toyota hopes to double annual sales with new Tundra By MARK RECHTIN | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS 6:15 am, February 27, 2006 Traditionally cautious Toyota is taking a gamble on the redesigned 2007 Tundra. Toyota's new assembly plant in San Antonio will double Tundra production, so the automaker must find lots more buyers for its full-sized pickup. Toyota has been surprised by its inability to win over consumers who already own import-brand cars, says Ernest Bastien, vice president of Toyota's vehicle operations group. In 2005, T…

LX 470 losing star power By Paul & Anita Lienert To test the redesigned 2006 Lexus LX 470, we headed out to Los Angeles with another couple for a sightseeing vacation. What better way to put the Japanese luxury sport-utility vehicle -- the expensive sibling of the Toyota Land Cruiser -- through its paces than to load it up with four adults and a week's worth of luggage? The LX 470's chronic weak point, an underpowered engine, has been addressed on the '06 model. Its 4.7-liter V-8 engine now makes an extra 40 horsepower compared with last year. But despite the improvements, the Lexus still felt a bit old and due for a major overhaul. We drove an amply equipped, e…

here Can General Motors and Ford Keep Up? There are two ways to increase your income; 1) spend less or 2) How do you cut profits, without cutting quality, or dulling the 'cutting edge'? make more. While no one questions whether or not Toyota Motor Company will have any problem achieving the second, the automaker is already a tightly run ship. Nevertheless, about 300 of its most creative engineers have figured out how to cut build costs of its popular 3.5-liter engine, by a significant margin.

2007 Lexus GS450h Can hybrid technology make a great sedan even better? by Paul A. Eisenstein (2006-02-24) The Big Island of Hawaii is a land of surprises. Along the warm, dry Kona Coast it's sunshine, swimming, and golf. But just ten miles away, along the cross-island Saddle Road , a torrential rain is pummeling down, while a blizzard scours the island's twin volcanic peaks. So it was an unexpectedly appropriate place to go for our first drive of the 2007 Lexus GS450h, a sedan that delivers a variety of its own surprises. The new model could very well redefine both the Lexus brand and the concept of hybrid-electric vehicles. "Hybrid" is, of course, what the little …

Spy Shots: 2008 Scion xB Posted Feb 14th 2006 12:00PM by John Neff Filed under: Spy Photos, Minivans/MPVs Toyota is set to replace its “youth-oriented” Scion xB for the 2008 model year and TCC has a spy shot up of the replacement model’s development mule. From the looks of it the next xB will be larger than the current model, especially in length. While we can’t glean any details about the design from this mule, we’re expecting the new xB to incorporate styling cues from the Toyota bB already on sale in Japan. Lexus Mulls Small Crossover By Global Auto Systems Staff February 17, 2006 New premium compact CUV would be based on Toyota RAV and could be assembled in Canada. TOKYO—Toyota's upscale Lexus brand, as part of an ongoing expansion of its product portfolio, plans to introduce at least one more luxury crossover and is considering the addition of a smaller near-luxury crossover based on the recently redesigned RAV4. The proposed compact Lexus CUV would be positioned as a smaller sibling to the popular RX330 and would be targeted at Acura's Accord-based RDX, which goes into production this summer. Sources familiar with Toyota's plans say the company could bring the…

freep apologies if this is posted elsewhere CHICAGO --To the amazement of many, Toyota failed to reinvent the pickup truck Thursday. "It's not the breakthrough I expected," said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific, an industry consulting company based in Tustin, Calif. "It'll be a good seller for Toyota, but it doesn't change the landscape."

Toyota to Expand Output Capacity in Canada TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp., whose solid growth could soon put it ahead of General Motors as the world's largest automaker, said Wednesday it will increase output capacity at a new assembly plant it is building in Canada. Annual production capacity at Toyota's planned factory in Woodstock, Ontario, will be raised to 150,000 units, from an initial target of 100,000 units, the company said in a statement. The plant, now under construction, is scheduled to come online in 2008. Total investment in the Woodstock facility, Toyota's second plant in Canada, will now amount to about $950 million with a total employment of 2,000 people…

For the past six months I have been hearing rumors of a Toyota plant being discussed in the Flint, MI area. First I have heard that the GM Buick City site might be the location for either a Toyota General Assembly plant and more recently and probably more likely an Engine Plant. I write this, with the understanding that there has been lobbying by the UAW for Toyota to put something in Wixom. The rumors I first heard were prior to the Wixom efforts. Recently I have been hearing more and more chatter for a Flint site. I write this with the understanding that some will comment that Toyota will not sleep with the UAW, particularly the Flint UAW. I say it is a mute poi…

The Daily Auto Insider Monday, February 6, 2006 February 2006 Toyota announced a "voluntary special service campaign" that involves approximately 3,900 early 2004 model year Lexus RX330 vehicles in the U.S. In these vehicles, there is a possibility that the anchor bolt for the rear, left-side passenger seatbelt buckle (directly behind the driver's seat) does not have sufficient strength. Lexus has received one report of this condition. Lexus said in a news release that it will mail owners of the involved vehicles a special service campaign notification via first class mail beginning in late January or early February, 2006. Lexus dealers will replace the anchor bol…

Consultant: Toyota will spurn Michigan UAW dissidents' Delphi protest killed chances for a plant, Cole says By LINDSAY CHAPPELL | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/06/06, 1:29 pm et Toyota Motor Corp. says it still is considering locations in union-heavy Michigan to build a transmission and engine plant. But one of Michigan's biggest boosters, industry consultant David Cole, says he believes Toyota no longer is serious about the state. Cole says he thinks recent activism by dissident UAW members has effectively killed the deal for Michigan. "I believe we had a great shot at bringing a Toyota plant here," Cole said from his office at the Center for Autom…

You know, making fun of this would just be too easy, so just take it: Some suggestions on making a witty remark: 1. Hairlips (very un-PC) 2. Frogs 3. Massive overbites (could also be un-PC to the sensitive) 4. The location of Toyota's design staff (hint: only your proctologist knows) Urban Cruiser, bold new concept for a mini SUV The Urban Cruiser is a design exercise by ED2, Toyota’s European design studio, for a futuristic mini SUV. This concept car draws heavily on Toyota’s heritage in Sports Utility Vehicles but also adds its own dynamic flair and rugged originality. The Urban Cruiser also features a fresh interior style inspired on trendy furniture.

BusinessWeek Online Toyota Builds A Truck Even Bubba May Love Friday February 3, 3:59 pm ET By David Kiley When Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM - News) Corp. engineers visited South Texas to ask locals what they wanted in a full-size pickup, the out-of-towners got a quick education in priorities. Sure, the truck had to be big and powerful, but it also needed Texas-size brakes to stop three-plus tons of horses, hay, gear, and trailer from taking out a corral fence or barn post. Toyota listened and learned. And at the Chicago Auto Show on Feb. 9, it will fire its boldest shot yet into the already wobbly defenses of Detroit's auto makers -- taking the wraps off the first full-siz…

From the sounds of it, it will be quite the slow mover, and the gas savings aren't a whole lot over the Accord hybrid, which the reviewer remarks as "spanking-quick", lol.

Toyota Gives Camry Buyers Fraichir Fabric By Christie Schweinsberg WardsAuto.com, Jan 31 2006 Fabric treated with a silk byproduct is standard on the high-end trim of Toyota’s new midsize sedan. OJAI, CA – A resource from Toyota Motor Corp.’s homeland is providing a fabric treatment that gives the new ’07 Camry sedan’s plain cloth seats a silkier, softer feel. Already found on some of Toyota’s microvans in Japan, cloth seats treated with the Fraichir process will be standard on 4-cyl. Camry XLE models sold in the U.S. Fraichir (pronounced fray-sheer) is a brand name used in women’s and children’s apparel in Japan for at least a decade. However, the history of its …

In other news in Europe, Toyota's partner Peugeot will likely allow Toyota to use some of its platform such as the very Epsilon-like platform used by the 407 and the very Chi-like platform currently used by the 607. What does this mean? That the the next gen Yaris and Corolla will get handling and suspension help from the French. More interesting is the fact that these euro-platforms will lead to Toyota finally having a Camry and an Avalon that have good handling. The 2012 Camry,ES, & Rav4 will likely be on the 407-platform. The next Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, and possilbly the next Tacoma will likely be on the 607-platfrom. This will mean several things. GM must …

"Now, I may receive some heat and email about this, but after almost half a century in the U.S., multi-billions of dollars invested in every state in the union, millions of very satisfied customers, seven factories, thousands of employees, isn't it time to stop calling Toyota an import brand? It may have come from Japan, but it is now an American brand that's almost iconic."

Okay, I was just watching a Toyota commercial advertising their sedans when they announced their "270hp Avalon". Are they allowed to "round up"? I mean, at first their ratings went from 280 to 268 when the new system came out, and their commercials kept preaching 280 rather than changing the voiceover for the correct numbers. But now, blatently announcing "270" when it's still a couple of hp off--isn't that illegal? I'm not going to complain over 2hp--no one would notice the difference, but it's more the principal of the matter. How can you try to be the world's biggest auto maker, and lie? Sorry, I know that…

IS350 Review

19 December 2005 By Robert Farago Jinking through traffic somewhere above the ton, it quickly became apparent that the Lexus IS 350 wasn’t the ideal car for the job. The erstwhile sports sedan bumped and jiggled over surface imperfections like a tied-down tunermobile. It rolled through directional transitions like a luxobarge, helming with unacceptable imprecision and unwelcome lean. While the powerplant provided more than enough shove for the work at hand, the IS 350’s dynamics drew a definitive line between “doable” and “enjoyable.” If further proof were needed that I was in the wrong car at the wrong speed, the BMW M3 keeping pace provided it. After a few polite l…

This article is a little over a year old, but it sheds some light into the side of Toyota that is never published. How does the world's most profitable automaker get away with lowering wages after age 51, refusing overtime pay, hiring as few workers as possible while increasing cash reserves (causing higher work-related injuries and suicide rates), and underpaying taxes? I found this quote especially interesting: ZNet

Prius Follies, Take Two The Wall Street Journal By Holman W. Jenkins, Jr. (Commentary) December 14, 2005 Since we're still on the subject of fuel mileage – or at least still responding to email after a column two weeks ago on the Toyota Prius – let's spill a few more gallons of petroleum-based ink. The Prius is a nifty gadget and comes with lots of extras. But Toyota markets the vehicle on its fuel efficiency, and fans tout its fuel efficiency. And our point was to debunk the idea that saving gasoline is a virtue independent of economics, such that it makes sense, say, to spend a buck to reduce gas use by 50 cents. Edmunds.com, the auto shopper site, guid…

Toyota's latest 2006 sales volume projection outstrips its earlier estimate for 8.5 million units, as demand for environment-friendly vehicles such as its Prius hybrid vehicle is increasing globally amid high gasoline prices. Next year Toyota said brisk overseas sales will again lead the firm's global sales expansion. Toyota said it now forecasts global vehicle sales for the group to rise 9 percent to 8.85 million next year, as it moves ever closer to replacing struggling General Motors as the world's largest automaker. The entire Toyota group includes mini-vehicle maker Daihatsu Motor and truckmaker Hino Motors. Challenging GM Toyota owns 51 perce…
