Japan Certifies Toyota Plug-in Hybrid for Public-road Tests Link to Original Article @ The Auto Channel Tokyo July 25, 2007; TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that it has developed a plug-in hybrid vehicle and become the first manufacturer to have such a vehicle certified for use on public roads in Japan. The TOYOTA Plug-in HV — certified for public road-use by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport — uses, like earlier TMC-developed hybrid vehicles, both a gasoline-powered internal combustion engine and an electric motor. But increased battery capacity gives it a longer electric-motor-only cruising range and a battery-charging device all…

Toyota lags General Motors in second-quarter sales Associated Press | Link to Original Article @ Detroit News TOKYO -- Toyota slipped behind General Motors in global sales in the second quarter but retained its lead for the first half of the year, numbers showed today, as the two companies jostle for the title of world's biggest automaker. The figures -- and sales growth rates -- indicate that Toyota could overtake GM as the No. 1 automaker, a title the U.S. giant has held for 76 years. Typically, rankings are determined by full-year production figures, not sales, so that distinction will have to wait until data is tallied for the entire year. Toyota Motor Corp. said…

Spycam: Next-gen Toyota Sequoia Link to Original Article @ MotorTrend The next-generation Toyota Sequoia, the king of Toyota's SUV family, has been snapped for the first time up close and personal by the Brenda Priddy spy crew. Codenamed 200L, the all-new vehicle is based on the new Tundra platform and is being designed to go head-to-head with GM's GMT 900 family of large SUVs. Expect the Sequoia to offer the same engine options as its Tundra sibling -- the 4.7 and 5.7-liter V-8s. According to Priddy, both the SR5 and Limited (front view) trim models were being tested of this new beast, which looks plenty big enough to rival the interior room of the GM offerings and …

Scion Contemplates New Segments Scion will step up its efforts to attract young customers, with products in additional segments and a streamlined purchasing process, reports Scion Corporate Manager Steve Haag. Haag refused to name which segments Scion is considering, but he acknowledged the company's intentions to expand its product range. "It is the only thing that makes sense," he said. "Youth want lots of different products." But considering young buyers' price sensitivity, segments such as high-performance sports cars are off-limits, Haag added. Scion is also examining Toyota's line of Daihatsu-developed home-market microcars for possible importation to the U.S. "D…

This was a video obviously put together by Ford marketing, and compares the new Silverado and Tundra to the F150. Apparently 28mph is the harmonic sweet spot for the Ford (why not 25 or 30mph?). Anyway, Looks like the F150 and Silverado were dam near equal, but the Tundra is flopping all over the place!

Review: 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid The 2008 Highlander Hybrid is an exceptionally versatile package that allows you to haul the kids and their lanky pals in happy comfort without experiencing unnecessary gas pump trauma. It's always quiet and hassle-free, just like the neighbor's kid (not your own), and its green-friendly powertrain takes some of the guilt out of the constant motorized errands that are part of raising a young family. It's comfortable and useful without being so precious that you're afraid of parking it somewhere a rogue supermarket cart might find you. You might even be able to cancel that summer math tutor if you can get the kids involved in runnin…

Toyota slows delevopment process to preserve reputation Worried about slipping quality, Toyota is slowing down its product development. Toyota Motor Corp. will build more prototype vehicles, hire more engineers and spend more money in an effort to ensure that quality doesn't slip. The company also will take more time between project approval and production of the first salable vehicle. For several years, Toyota has taken pride in reducing vehicle development time and adopting time-saving innovations such as virtual prototypes. But those measures have lowered the quality of Toyota vehicles, engineers and executives acknowledge. "We were missing our internal targets,"…

Mark Rechtin Automotive News May 28, 2007 - 1:00 am LOS ANGELES -- A batch of camshaft failures in 5.7-liter V-8 engines has dinged the launch of the Toyota Tundra pickup. Camshafts in 20 engines have snapped, says Toyota spokesman Mike Michels. The outside camshaft supplier, which Toyota declined to identify, has traced the problem to "a metallurgical defect in the casting, a flaw in the metal which they have corrected," he says. To date, Toyota has built 30,000 of the engines, and the company is determining how many might be affected. Michels says that it was "an early batch," and that "Toyota is confident in the production from that point on." Full article: http:…

Lexus' LF-A Spied NSX? What NSX? Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Published 06/20/07, 7:59 am et Lexus will reveal the production LF-A supercar either at Frankfurt in September or on its home field at Tokyo in October. This prototype, spied turning test laps at the Nürburgring, is likely powered by a 5.0-liter, 500-hp V10, similar to what’s in the next-generation NSX that the competition from Acura is finalizing for a Tokyo debut. While the LF-A’s debut is up in the air, it’s clear the $100,000-plus flagship sports car is well on its way to going on sale in late 2008 as a 2009 model. Styling closely follows that of the concept design shown at both the 2005 and …

The firm's next Prius will be so efficient it will be the first production car capable of returning more than 110mpg. The newcomer is being developed to try to improve European sales. Toyota's latest quality issues could lead to a recall of the brand-new Tundra pickup. Some owners of V-8 Tundras have reported camshaft failures in their trucks. Toyota told the Detroit News that it had logged 20 such complaints. The problem could affect as many as 30,000 Tundras built at assembly plants in Indiana and Texas. Toyota had planned to sell 200,000 Tundras in the truck's first year as a part of an aggressive expansion plan in the United States . The company has opened a new San Antonio plant to assemble the truck; has expanded an Alabama engine plant to supply to factory; and has also started construction on plants in Ontario and Mississippi as it tries to m…

It claimed that hybrid autos are a form of "false environmentalism" and asserted that the Hummer H3 is more environmentally friendly than a Toyota Prius. Then it referred to Toyota as a "foreign" company compared to automakers headquartered in the United States. Finally, it took the Conservative government to task for offering ince…

"Delicious rumors of a new Toyota Supra continue to make the rounds in Tokyo. Word on the street is that Toyota is planning two versions, using the recent FT-HS North American International Auto Show concept as a template." The main version will receive an improved version of the 3.5-liter V-6 from the IS350, producing 330 brake horsepower, and will be aimed fair and square at the next Nissan 350Z. However, if the grapevine is correct, Toyota will also do a V-6 hybrid using a ramped-up version of the GS450h powertrain on a shortened rear-drive platform. This one would pack 400 bhp. Few would doubt that the hybrid variant is really the car Toyota wants to build, becau…

While driving back from one of my friends in Atlanta I saw a Turdra for sale at a CHEVY dealership. Now it would not have caught my eyes if it was the older one, but it was the 2007! That's right, the "used" BIG 2007 Turd was on sale at a Chevy dealership . Wonder which moron bought it and decided to get rid of it in less than a quarter year. If GA has taxes like FL does, that dude spent 4,000k only on taxes in less than 3 months, provided he bought a similarly equipped Silverado, wow what an investment. I am going to check and see if Autotrader has a listing for this Turd. That was priceless.

Prius can't pass Georgia emissions test Eco-conscious drivers in Georgia are finding out that the grass isn't necessarily greener on their side of the fence. 2007 is the first year drivers of the 2004 Prius are required to get their cars tested for emissions. You'd think the clean-running hybrid would have no problems breezing through the exam. But, as CNN reports, no matter how many times Georgia drivers try to test one, they all fail. Huh? Well, sorta. It's more like the Prius refuses to take the test. When the Prius is set to idle at 2,500 rpm on the tester, it does what it's supposed to do. It shuts off the engine to save fuel. Ford's Not the Only One with Engine Supply Issues... Toyota Motor Corp. has a simple math problem. It is preparing to build about 2.2 million cars and light trucks a year in North America by 2010. But it only has the capacity to produce 1.45 million engines annually, a shortfall of more than 700,000 engines. So it was no secret that Toyota was looking for a site to build a North American engine and transmission plant. Now sources inside and outside the company say Toyota has scrapped that plan in favor of a wave of expansions at one or more of its existing engine plants. Autoweek

Toyota Dealers Offer Discount On Newly Redesigned Tundra By NORIHIKO SHIROUZU - March 9, 2007 10:06 a.m. Toyota Motor Corp. says some of its dealers are offering as much as a $1,500 discount on the basic work truck version of Toyota's newly redesigned Tundra truck, just barely one month after it went on sale. The discount for the Texas-built large truck reflects the intense competition in this lucrative segment, and the challenge Toyota faces in its effort to substantially expand its sales in a segment long dominated by Detroit brands. The discount is a one-month, nationwide program that began this month and is described by Toyota as "another tool," to spur sales, i…

After offering $1500 to dealers to sweeten the deal of base Tundras to customers who may use them for business reasons, they have added a $2000 incentive for dealers "to better motivate them to purchase the new Tundra for use as a parts delivery truck." (Because the majority of the american public knows that they're essentially worthless and out for themselves) So, expect Toyota to get a big boost from D.C. since the politicians can smell the money. They're like rats at a molasses factory, they'll just keep showing up and multiplying

The plant will be built on a 1,700-acre site at Blue Springs, land that has been promoted for economic development. Mississippi was chosen in a competition with Tennessee and Arkansas. Gov. Haley Barbour and two Toyota manufacturing executive vice presidents, Gary Convis and Ray Tanguay, announced the project in an auditorium at Tupelo High School. "Toyota is the…

Who's Afraid of Toyota? The Wall Street Journal By Holman W. Jenkins, Jr. (Commentary) Feb. 21, 2007 Edmunds.com for years reviewed the Toyota Echo, the company's entry-level vehicle, by describing it as the cheapest car in America and still overpriced. Even after the Echo was finally dropped last year from the U.S. market, the authoritative auto site couldn't resist reminding shoppers it had once whispered in their ears, "Friends don't let friends drive Echos." And Edmunds offers only marginally more favorable comment on the Toyota Yaris, the vehicle that took the Echo's place, calling it a "decent subcompact" but advising shoppers to "keep an open mind" about compe…

Mark Donohue called it "the unfair advantage." And those of us who have been around racing for longer than, oh… five minutes, know that racers will sell their soul to find that winning edge. Even if it means breaking the rules. A buddy of mine, who’s been around racecars since the ink on Mario Andretti’s racing license was still wet, once managed to install a 2.5-liter engine in a car that raced in the 2.0-liter class, and then welded a fake extra exhaust on it so rivals would think that’s where the extra speed came from. Later, he got mechanics at an Italian sports car manufacturer to build an engine they thought was the 3.0-liter unit the rules required, but actually d…

Toyota to pay owners for engine damages Compensation for 3.5 million '97-'02 Lexus, Toyota vehicles may cost automaker billions. Christine Tierney Link to Original Article @ DetNews Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to compensate owners of Lexus and Toyota vehicles that suffered engine damage due to a buildup of thickened oil, or sludge, in a settlement approved this week by a Louisiana state court. The agreement covers 3.5 million 1997-2002 model-year vehicles, although it is not known how many were damaged by sludge. Toyota agreed to settle the 2001 class-action suit last fall, and says the terms mirror a program the automaker put in place in 2002 to reimburse custome…

IS-F Production Limited to 1,000 We have some bad news for all Lexus fans. Subscribers to the AutoWeek magazine were probably disappointed to read a short blurb on the Lexus IS-F in the January 22, 2007 issue where the magazine reported that Toyota will be building only 1,000 Lexus IS-F sedans for the United States. Look at the bright side, you guys will be the lucky few to have the car and show it off to your fellow BMW M3 drivers. eGMCarTech

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070119/ap_on_...s/toyota_recall WASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday it was recalling 533,000 Tundra pickup trucks and Sequoia sport utility vehicles because of potential steering problems. Toyota said the recall involved 2004-2006 Tundra trucks and 2004-2007 Sequoia full-size SUVs. The automaker has received reports of 11 accidents and six injuries connected to the recall, said Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong. The automaker said there was a possibility of excessive wear to a front suspension lower ball joint that could make it difficult to steer the vehicle and stay in the center of the lane. Drivers may also notice more noise coming…

Toyota’s ultra-low-cost car threatens ‘big three’ Toyota, the world’s second largest carmaker by sales, is working on a radically different approach to car design, development and manufacturing in an attempt to come up with an ultra-low-cost car, according to its president. “The focus is on low-cost technology,” said Katsuaki Watanabe, in an interview with the Financial Times. “Everything from design to production methods will be radically changed and we are thinking of a really ultra-low-cost way of designing, using ultra-low-cost materials, even developing new materials if necessary.” The move comes as Toyota is this year set to overtake General Motors as the world’…

Reviews: 2007 Toyota Tundra Toyota really got serious with this one, and it shows. If you've previously discounted the Tundra because it wasn't big enough or had a toy engine, think again. If you've never considered one before, have a look. More good choices are great for consumers, and since this one has been born, bred and built in the USA, there's no reason to feel guilty about it. Edmunds Full Test --- In general, this is a big brawny half-ton truck that seems to be moving into three-quarter-ton truck territory. Toyota has proven time and again that they know how to build vehicles that American people want and will buy. From my first impression at the Chicago…

Please, it is now time for all good people to stop watching NASCAR. Toyota knows exactly what it is doing and many people have sold their souls for a few bucks. A few select quotes from Veteran driver Dale Jarret: "As far as Toyota, sure, the parent company is foreign ... but there are a lot of Toyotas that are built in the United States." Toyota just as American as Chevy, Ford http://www.nascar.com/2007/news/headlines/...yota/index.html And this "Toyota is American" spin will be spewed out every two minutes during TV NACASR broadcasts. There will be tribute pieces about "How Toyota has built America" and "Why Americans should be proud that Toyota is in NASCAR." …

funny stuff, i was reading it at the Target stores tonight. basically, in spite of the 'it will be reliable because its a toyota' kool aid lines, they basically hated it and won't recommend it. i was so ROTFLMAO they had issues with a lot of the non-performance stuff. they liked the powertrain and off road prowess, but it wasn't soft and cuddly enough for them. noisy, rides hard, blind spots, interior quality issues, etc. I guess toyota makes a non-pansy vehicle and gets on CR's bad side! Read it if you get a chance. has toyota gone to the bad side? LOL, so desperate top plug all segments that now they have p1ssed off CR? Consumer Reports is more hilario…

Interesting article. Toyota recalls more vehicles in the U.S. than it sold last year prompting study of Vehicle Development Process. Last year, Toyota recalled 2.38 million vehicles in the U.S. -- more than the 2.26 million vehicles Toyota sold in that year. This statistic resulted in a formal review by Toyota to determine what needed to change. After a two-month review of its product development process, the significant lessons learned include: 1. Engineers in some cases may have rushed out products without conducting enough quality checks, nor building a sufficient number of physical prototypes. 2. Toyota also concluded that it outsourced engineering perhaps mor…

Toyota to Overtake Ford in 2007 Ford Motor Co. (F.N) expects Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.T) to unseat it next year as the second biggest company behind General Motors Corp. (GM.N) in the American car market, a position Ford has held since the 1920s, the New York Times said on its Web site on Thursday. Citing internal Ford projections, the paper says the projections show that company officers believe Ford will permanently fall to third place as soon as January. Ford, which is struggling to restructure itself under a plan called The Way Forward, predicted in September that its market share within two years would bottom out at 14 to 15 percent of the market, making i…

2007MY for New Tundra to Take Advantage of Old EPA Figures New rules that will lower window-sticker fuel economy numbers on vehicles are already affecting carmakers' behavior, but perhaps not in the way regulators intended. The new figures are intended to reflect real-world fuel economy more closely than today's fuel-economy ratings. Shoppers use the figures to compare vehicles' operating costs. Listed fuel economy rates are expected to fall 7% to 15% under the new standard. To take advantage of higher miles per gallon results under the old testing procedures, Toyota Motor Corp.'s big new Tundra full-size pickup will be called a 2007 model when it debuts, despite the…

Toyota's Tundra Tactics Here's the latest on Toyota's plans to challenge Detroit's dominance of the full-size pickup market with an all-new Tundra. The last of the 2006 Tundra pickups will be built in Princeton, Ind., later this month. That will mark the end of the design that was dismissed by true truckers. The bigger 2007 version, which aims to be a more legitimate challenger to the F-150, Silverado/Sierra and Ram, is set to start shipping to dealers around Feb. 12, which coincidentally is Lincoln's birthday (the 16th president, not the American luxury brand). The biggest Tundra, the CrewMax that will be shown at the Detroit auto show in January, isn't expected at …

NHTSA Investigates Toyota Sienna and Two SUVs Toyota Motor Corp.'s 2004 and 2005 Sienna minivans with power rear liftgates are being investigated by U.S. safety regulators after reports of 14 injuries when the liftgates unexpectedly closed. The inquiry covers 142,418 of the minivans, Rae Tyson, a spokesman for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said Wednesday. The probe began Dec. 1. Gas in high-pressure struts that open and close the liftgates may leak because of a faulty seal, the Washington-based agency said on its Web site.
