For awhile, it seem Nissan was going a bit crazy with exciting, performance-focused concepts. Recent examples include the IDx concept, the distinctive electric BladeGlider concept, and the Formula One inspired Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge concept. Executives at both automakers talked up these concepts and the possibility of them going into production. But now, talk has almost gone to a dead silence. Automotive News notes that there is a distinctive change in tone at both automakers during the auto show when speaking with executives. Instead of being excited and speaking about these concepts, Nissan's executives talked about putting their efforts behind a core group of cars tha…

Yutaka Katayama, a former executive for Nissan and "father of the Z,"passed away this week at the age 105 due to heart failure. His son Mitsuo confirmed the news to The Associated Press. Katayama has a long history with Nissan as he joined the company back in 1935. He held many roles at the company dealing with marketing and publicity. Many consider his greatest achievement to be the person who gave life to the original Datsun Z sports car. "A car is a horse. I want to drive a thoroughbred that's in tune with my heartbeat, but not something that's too dressed up for someone like me," said Katayama to The Associated Press in a 2002 interview. His other achievement was …

Nissan decided to their commercial on the Super Bowl to reveal two new cars. The first is their LMP1 racer that will enter Le Mans in June. What makes their racer stand out is that it happens to be a front-engine model, not the mid-engine variety that has been part of endurance racing for quite awhile. Now for the big surprise of the ad. Towards the end of the ad, there's a peculiar sedan draped in red which looks very familiar to the Sports Sedan Concept shown at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. Before it fades to black, we see the back of the sedan where the Maxima nameplate appears. We'll likely learn more about the Maxima in the coming months. In the meantime, you can ch…

Nissan is working hard into changing its performance and racing arm, NISMO, into a real player. This is being shown by how many hatchbacks and sport cars are coming out with the NISMO name. But NISMO is considering expanding their reach to other Nissan models. CarAdvice.com.au recently spoke with Nissan marketing chief Darren Cox and Nismo boss Shoichi Miyatani, and both said a Nismo-tuned SUV or pickup are on the table. That could include the Navara and Qashqai crossover. But there's no telling what other vehicles could go under the NISMO transformation. “Nismo has to be a credible production car from Nissan that’s sporty and therefore we study the implications of that…

With the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon heading into showrooms in a few months, we've haven't heard anything from Nissan or Toyota about what they have in store for their next-generation midsize trucks. But that has changed for one automaker. The Truth About Cars has heard some information about what's in store for the next-generation Frontier. A supplier source has told them that Nissan will be using the new Navara truck as the base for the next-generation truck. Previously, Nissan was going to use bones of the first-generation Frontier (D22 platform) for their next-generation truck. The reason for this is that the company saw a possible chance for the affordable, fu…

Last year at the Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan debuted the IDx concepts. Looking like a modern interpretation of the Datsun 510 from the seventies, the IDx was a small, rear-drive coupe that could be a competitor to the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S. In fact, many reports have cited comments made by Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer saying that production model could arrive by 2016. But according to Wards Auto, the dream maybe is just that. Wards had the chance to speak with Pierre Loing, vice president-product planning for Nissan Americas. Loing explained that the automaker is having a tough time trying to make a business case for the vehicle. “It’s not easy to do, (a…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 18, 2013 "If you slash prices, they will come." Okay, maybe I sightly altered one of the famous quotes from Field of Dreams, but if you worked at Nissan, this quote would ring very true. Earlier this year, the company announced they would be cutting the price of Leaf by $6,000 and extending the range. This price cut is working as past few months have seen Leaf sales right around 2,000 unit mark. This has also prompted other EV manufacturers to either offer incentives or price drops. The price drop has also caused a problem for Nissan; the demand for Leafs is outstripping the supply. "We're going to be short on in…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 22, 2013 The Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S really doesn't have any direct competitors aside from the Mazda Miata. But that could be changing. What Car? is reporting that Nissan is readying a concept car that is the company's possible answer to the GT86. The design of this concept is inspired by a car from the company's past. Nissan isn't saying what that vehicle is, but did say it isn't a Z car. Nissan will gauge the reception of concept and decide whether or not to put it into production. If given the green light, the production model will use the Juke's turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder. Source: What Car? William Mal…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 13, 2013 Nissan's CEO has a small request for its U.S. arm: Double sales by 2017. "China was not our biggest, I would say, disappointment. It was mainly the United States. We were expecting a strong year in the United States. It didn't happen," Ghosn told reporters after announcing Nissan's 2012 fiscal results. In 2012, Nissan's sales in the U.S. rose to 1.1 million - up five percent (and a record year as well). However Nissan lost 0.5 percent of market share (7.7 percent) in the U.S., which puts them further away from reaching a market share goal of ten percent. So how will Nissan USA pull off this feat? Accor…

Three weeks ago, at the New York International Auto Show, Nissan unveiled the 2015 Murano. The Murano has always been a crossover with more curvaceous lines than the rest of its peers and this new version is no exception. As it was so soon after the NY Auto Show, I was caught off guard today during a trip from Indianapolis, IN to Columbus, OH by these two 2015 Murano prototypes cruising on I-70 with no camouflage. The silver one looked fairly complete and wearing all of its trim, while the black one had clearly been taped up with plastic previously and was missing several exterior trim pieces. You can clearly see the “floating roof” treatment that Nissan is trying out wit…

Infiniti has been making the auto show rounds with their Q50 Eau Rouge concept which previews a possible competitor to the likes of BMW's M and Mercedes-Benz's AMG division. According to a source, the Q50 Eau Rouge concept could become a reality. Auto Express learned from a source at the at the Beijing Motor Show that momentum is building for the high performance sedan. “At this stage it would take more to stop the car getting made than to start things. There is a real buzz about it,” said the source. No word on when a production version of the Q50 Eau Rouge could be shown. Source: Auto Express William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. November 19th, 2013 Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com Nissan has unveiled an updated GT-R for the 2015 model year while also adding a race inspired NISMO version. Visually, the 2015 GT-R exterior differs little from the 2014 model with changes limited to new exterior lighting. Nissan added multi-LED headlights with a new Adaptive Front Lighting System feature that automatically adjusts the angle of the headlight beam as the speed of the car changes, sending the headlight beam further at highway speeds and closer in suburban driving. included in the headlight is a "lightning" LED light pipe design. Tail lights are…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 9, 2013 The New York State Supreme Court may have put a stop to the unified fleet of the Nissan NV200 'Taxi of Tomorrow'. Last night, Justice Shlomo S. Hagler ruled that the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission had no authority of giving Nissan a ten-year contract that makes the NV200 the exclusive taxicab of the city. "Simply stated, the power to contract and compel medallion owners to purchase the Nissan NV200 from Nissan for ten years does not exist in the City Charter," wrote Justice Hagler. "We believe the Court's decision is fundamentally wrong, and we intend to appeal immediately. It was well within the…

I was watching a best motoring episode and the Drift King (Keichi Tsuchiya) mentioned that the Nissan GTR is not a true Supercar due to the fact that it's too heavy. He does have a point. The GTR weights 3800 lbs and is heavier than all the other cars in its category. Also, it has back seats which some people would classify as more of a high performance sports coupe. I highly respect the GTR's capabilities but feel there's a certain untangible that is missing. Maybe it's driving feel, or how you can't feel the passion when driving it hard like you do with a Ferrari 458. What do you guys/girls think?

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 16, 2013 Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer let loose some information concerning the next-generation Z. Speaking with Auto Express at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week, Palmer revealed that the company will reveal a concept at the Toyko Motor Show in November that gives some hints of what to expect with the next Z. “Do I know what it looks like? Yes I do. Have I driven it? Yes I have. When will you see it? Come to Tokyo,” said Palmer. Palmer says the next Z will be lighter and smaller than the 370Z. Also, the next Z will feature a smaller powerplant and possibly be turbocharged. Palmer also stressed…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 13, 2013 While Nismo has been known to build hotted-up versions of the 350Z and 370Z, they weren't really known in the U.S. With the introduction of the refreshed 2014 370Z Nismo and the new 2013 Juke Nismo, Nissan is beginning to change that. Nissan is planning to expand the Nismo brand in the U.S. by introducing new models within the next few years. There will also be Nismo models with the RS designation that will have more power and performance modifications. “In every car (Nismo does), it needs to be good business sense,” said Carl Phillips, Nissan North America’s chief marketing manager. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 10, 2013 Nissan has been on a tear lately with introducing new models. So far the company has unveiled the Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra, and Versa Note. Their latest showing at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show is the new 2014 Rogue. This is an important vehicle for Nissan as the Rogue is currently Nissan's second best selling model in the U.S. The new Rogue's design is very Pathfinder-ish. Imagine taking the Pathfinder and sticking it in front of a shrink-ray, that's the 2014 Rogue's design in a nutshell. Inside, the Rogue gets the same dashboard layout as the new Altima and the option of a third-row seat. Power wi…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 21, 2013 "That's not a knife." *Pulls out a bowie knife.* "That's a knife." Much like Crocodile Dundee, Nissan is using size to their advantage. Engine size that is. At the kickoff of Nissan 360, an industry showcase of Nissan's global product and technology portfolio, the company announced the next-generation Titan pickup would be packing a Cummins 5.0L turbodiesel V8. The V8 is expected to make more than 300 horsepower and well over 500 pound-feet of torque (550 pound-feet is what everybody is guessing). “Truck owners told us there's a demand for the performance and torque of a diesel in a capable truck that …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 5, 2013 Kelly Blue Book expects that prices for used 2013 Nissan Leafs will be lower than the 2012 Leaf. Announced this week, Kelly Blue Book forecasts that after three years, a 2013 Nissan Leaf will retain 35 percent of its original sticker price. That is five percent less than 2012 Leaf's resale value after three years. A major reason for the drop is attributed to 2013's lower MSRP. A 2013 Leaf starts at $29,650, a drop of $6,400 when compared to the 2012 model. Also hurting the resale value of the Leaf are nearly new models crossing the auction block. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 25, 2013 Nissan was riding high when the announcement came that their NV Taxi would become New York City's Taxi of Tomorrow last year. Since then, Nissan has been under a barrage of attacks. The latest setback comes from New York Supreme Court Justice Peter Moulton who ruled one part of Nissan's and New York's Taxi & Limousine Commission agreement is "null, void and unenforceable". That part is from the Taxi of Tomorrow requirements which asked for a vehicle to be a hybrid - something the NV200 doesn't meet. Nissan argued that it is bringing a hybrid version of the van to market in 2015, but the court ruled ag…

At the Chicago Auto Show, Nissan unveiled the new Juke NISMO and refreshed 370Z NISMO. Today at in Yokohama, Japan. CEO Carlos Ghosn made three key announcements for the future of NISMO. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 28, 2013 The Nissan Titan hasn't really changed since its introduction back in 2003. Sticking with the same 5.6L V8 engine and the choice of either a extended or crew cab means the Titan hasn't set the sales charts on fire. Sales last year for Titan totaled 21,576, a far cry from the nearly 87,000 sales in 2005, its best year. But with the 2015 Titan, Nissan is hoping the new model will become a contender. G. Noble Editor/Reporter CheersandGears.com March 2, 2012 According to Nikkei, one of Japan’s leading news sources, Nissan could be setting the stage for a revival of the Datsun brand in 2014. The Datsun brand has been in mothballs for about 26 years (since 1986) when Nissan phased the name out in the American market in favor of its own. However, that doesn’t mean you should expect to see Datsun badges on the next Z car, or any other future Nissan for that matter. Nikkei’s report claims that the revived Datsun brand would dirty its hands by building and selling inexpensive cars in emerging markets for Nissan such as India and Indonesia, which probably means you won’t …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 28, 2012 Every few months or so, an automaker inadvertently reveals their new vehicle before an auto show. Case in point is Nissan which showed their new 2013 Altima in a new video. The video, celebrating 30 years of production at Nissan Technical Center, shows for a brief moment a very pre-production 2013 Altima undergoing some tests. We can see the new headlights, swoopy bodywork and a new, sharper grille. Nissan has since then pulled down the video and replaced it with another, but thanks to Inside Line, they grabed a couple of screen shots. Source: Inside Line View full article

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 1, 2012 Nissan is taking a page out of the Volkswagen playbook with their announcement of a new modular platform. Called the Common Module Family (CMF) architecture, Nissan says the platform will allow the company to share up to 80 percent of parts between all new Nissan vehicles. CMF is comprised of four distinct components to each vehicle: the engine compartment, front chassis/sub frame, the cabin, and the rear chassis. Each has its own options to build minivans, SUVs, sedans, or hatchbacks. Besides helping Nissan reduce costs and manufacturing complexities, the move will allow the company to launch new vehic…

Nissan is slowly expanding their NV series of commercial van with the brand announcing a passenger van version this week. Now, Autoblog is reporting that another NV van could be in the wings. Nissan's Vice President of Commercial and Fleet Vehicles, Joe Castelli told Autoblog that Nissan is readying a retail version the NV200 van to compete with the Ford Transit Connect. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 5, 2012 If there was one automaker who is happy to see Ford leaving the compact truck market, it would be Nissan. "We're really the beneficiary of Ford pulling out of the segment. Last summer, Nissan pushed sales of the Frontier compact truck. The move helped the company record their biggest sales in the U.S.. As we've seen in prior months, GM, Ford, and Chrysler all love to tease us with shadowy, vague photos of their upcoming wares. Now, Nissan is joining in on the fun by releasing a teaser of their upcoming Pathfinder concept, set to debut at the Detroit Auto Show next month. Development of the next generation Nissan Titan has been rough. Back in 2008, Nissan wanted to partner with Chrysler on developing the next Titan. Next Nissan Altima To Get New CVT & Supercharged Hybrid William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 13, 2011 Nissan is hard at work on the next generation Altima due out sometime next year as a 2013 model and is expected to see an increase in fuel economy thanks to two items. First is a new CVT that will improve the fuel economy by as much as 10%. Nissan reduced the transmission’s internal friction by 40 percent and raised the CVT’s gear coverage ratio from 6.0 to 7.0. Given the current CVT in the Altima helps gives it a EPA rating of 32 MPG highway, the new one should see that number climb. Also, Nissan is working on their own in-ho…

Nissan Not Ready To Give Up In The Full Size Truck Wars William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 23, 2011 Nissan’s Titan pickup truck has been on sale since 2004 and hasn’t been a real sales success. So far in 2011, sales of the Titan have reached 15,348 trucks. That’s a far cry from 2005 when Nissan sold 86,945 trucks. However, Nissan’s new chairman of the Americas told Automotive News they’re going to being sticking out – and expects to. "We're going to need two or three cycles to be as professional as the people who have been doing it for 50 or 60 years. We still think we can do well in that segment," he said. "The first go in the …

A Nissan Leaf Limo? Its Not A Joke William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 27, 2011 Coming soon to an awards red carpet ceremony, a Nissan Leaf limo? Yes. Imperial Coach Builders, a subsidiary of Electric Car Company, inc., has announced they have received a order to build a Nissan Leaf limo. The company plans to stretch the all-electric vehicle by about 48 inches, increasing the overall length by roughly 27 percent. Imperial says with the extra length, they will double the seating in the rear passenger compartment. They don't say how they'll do it, but most likely it will have the seats to face each other. Imperial didn't say how mu…

Imagine that you spend $75,000 on a new Nissan GTR with a claimed 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds. You take your sports car to the drag strip to try and validate the claim, but you can tell right away you are not getting full performance from the car. You check with your GTR buddies, and one of them tells you that you must put the car into 'Launch Control' to get maximum performance. So you take it back to the track, turn off the car's VDC (vehicle differential control?) to engage launch control and the car runs much faster. You are starting to feel much better about your life until.............. Full thread here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CmLT05qZ8Q -check th…

2010 Altima loses its manual transmission options according the article i just read on C/D. For the 4 and the 6. So, let's inventory this. which of the midsizers offer MT? start out with the 6 cylinders. anyone? Are there any 6 cyl. MT cars left in this class? Fusion, Camry, Accord, M6, Subie still offer it on the 4 cyl. Subaru 2.5GT is the only 'performance' manual now I think. Subie 2.5GT wins by default? VW Passat and CC offer manuals but they are only 207hp. Ford Ecoboost if it offers MT will slot in under the subie but above the others. Buick v6 Regal with manual may have that niche to themselves! SHOCKING!

Titan Diesel for 2009 Navistar-sourced motor for light-duty pickup By BOB GRTIZINGER | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Published 06/15/07, 1:01 pm et News reports from Japan confirm that Nissan will put a diesel in its Titan full-size pickup truck by 2009, but so far the Japanese automaker shows no hint of interest in launching a truck in the heavy-duty pickup segment. Nissan reportedly will buy V8 diesel engines from International Truck and Engine Corp. Automotive News has reported that the company also may offer a low-budget V6 gasoline engine in the Titan in the future. The Titan’s only powerplant is a 5.6-liter, 317-hp, 385-lb-ft V8 gasoline engine. Nissa…

Here are some pictures I took of the 2010 Nissan Cube at the Montreal International Autoshow in Quebec, Canada on Tuesday January 20th. This is one very silly little car. Interior has terrible plastics (and ergonomics) and has very little legroom for front passengers. It looks like a retarded clown car from the outside. The hinge for the rear door has to have a bubble in the bodywork to fit. This should appeal only to those hardcore JDM fans. VIDEO:

Nissan offering buyouts to Tennessee workers 30th 2008 5:32PM Link to topic on Autoblog Following up Nissan's first set of U.S. buyout packages offered a year ago, employees at both the Smyrna and Decherd powertrain plants in Tennessee will be offered a lump sum payout along with medical and car purchase benefits to leave. Last year, the buyouts attracted 775 workers, though the payout at that time was just $45k plus an additional $500 for each year of service. This time, the lump sum starts at a heady $100k. Not surprisingly, Nissan is expecting more people to take the package this year than last. In fact, Nissan spokesman Fred Standish says that "market realities" …

Nissan, NEC Set Electric-Car Batteries for '09 May 20, 2008 Link to Source As the race to produce environmentally friendly cars heats up, Nissan Motor Co. and technology giant NEC Corp. announced Monday that next year they will begin mass-producing lithium-ion batteries, a key technology needed for electric cars. Nissan and NEC plan to invest a combined 12 billion yen ($115 million) in the battery project over the next three years, starting with capacity of 13,000 units a year, at first supplying batteries for Nissan forklifts. The joint venture, Automotive Energy Supply Corp., expects production of 65,000 units annually by 2011, mostly for cars. Nissan holds a 51%…

We just experienced firsthand the unbridled awesomeness contained within the body shell of Nissan's new über-Mechagodzilla, the GT-R. Apparently, Nissan is a true believer in the car's kickassedness and would prefer if owner's didn't eff it up with superfluous wings, flares and other accoutrements that have no hope of making the car better than it already is. Those who have imported a JDM GT-R to the United States will find this page in their owner's manual that warns in no uncertain terms against pulling a Paul Walker on their GT-R. Just leave the car be, folks. You can't do better than what Nissan already did, so don't try. Source: AutoBlog

Lookin good lookin good.... Spy photographers have caught the first ever images of the redesigned Nissan Maxima, a month ahead of it’s New York Auto Show introduction. With sales expected to begin this fall, the seventh-generation will be badged as a 2009 model. A Renault-Nissan diesel powerplant is expected to follow the initial engine offerings, arriving in a couple years as a 2011 model. In addition to the diesel motor, a Toyota-developed hybrid system may also be offered – and we’re expecting this as early as the 2010 model year! Watch for the uncloaked version to debut next month! In the tiny Ute class, the Nissan Rogue has caught my eye. After reading the Car&Driver comparo test, then going to the Edmunds owner reviews, and finally checking one out at the (closed) dealer, this thing seems like a "best in class" as a street SUV, at least from my perspective. Sporty looks inside and out, a long list of high-tech features, sprightly performance coupled with good mpg all work to make this thing worth a closer look. I have decried the use of CVTs before, but in the Rogue, it seems to enhance performance and fuel mileage.

Linkity Linkity 2 SANTA MONICA, Calif. — The wait is over. Undisguised 2009 Nissan GT-R photos have now become available prior to the car's official debut at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. Numerous GT-R prototypes have been caught testing around the world, including at Germany's Nürburgring and California's Laguna Seca Raceway, but this is the first look at the rocket coupe's completely undisguised sheet metal. Official specifications aren't expected to be announced until Nissan's Tokyo show press conference on October 24, but months of spy intelligence suggest the all-wheel-drive 2009 GT-R will get a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces approximately 450 horsepower. …

Nissan Rolls Out Fuel-Efficiency Gauge To Boost "Eco Driving" Date posted: 08-21-2007 | Link to Original Article @ Edmunds TOKYO — As part of its ongoing effort to get drivers to think green behind the wheel, Nissan on Tuesday said it is rolling out a fuel-efficiency gauge as a standard feature on such current models as the Altima and Infiniti G35 in the U.S. The company predicts it could "lead to an average 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency." The device eventually will be featured on all future new models, the company said. The gauge gives instant fuel-efficiency and average efficiency readings. Wandered around Pickering yesterday at lunch looking for a hybrid to drive. Stopped at an Acura dealer first, in case there was a hybrid CSX (I thought that made sense but apparently not). Then I stopped at Chevy, where the salesman told me they haven't ordered another Silverado hybrid since the first one took them many months to sell. Next door was Nissan, who had a Altima hybrid on display. Lettering on the windshield proclaimed a $3500 rebate from the Canadian government. Interestingly, the Nissan Canada website seems to claim only $1500. Not sure of the source of the discrepancy here. This is part of the same fuel-reducing incentive program that now slaps $1000 re…

Edmunds --- In the end, the G37 is still a fun-to-drive coupe with some attitude: it’s just that what’s there has been toned down quite a bit from the last model. While that’s bad for us hard-core enthusiasts, the extra refinement is a big improvement for those who have to live with the car everyday, whether sitting in traffic or cruising on the freeway. It’s not the quirky, jittery, manic machine the G35 was, but the Force is definitely with the G37. Car and Driver

Edmunds Evaluation: 2007 Nissan Altima 3.5SE Remember the '80s? You know — leg warmers, the Cold War, Punky Brewster? At the tail end of that let's-just-forget-it-ever-happened decade, Nissan introduced a revamped Maxima, the ads for which bore the well-known tagline: "The four-door sports car." Fast-forward 18 years. Driving the 2007 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE, that old tagline keeps popping into the brain. And while real sports cars don't have automatic transmissions or front-wheel drive or even a backseat, it's obvious that Nissan has quietly made the Altima the spiritual successor of that tagline's underlying philosophy: Just because a car has four doors doesn't mean it…
