Brazil's boom is good news for Fiat and VW October 12, 2010 - 11:30 pm ET The unthinkable has finally happened. Brazil has overtaken Germany as the fourth-largest market for passenger car and light commercial vehicle sales. That's good news for Fiat, Volkswagen and other European volume carmakers. Fiat and VW have dominated the Brazilian auto market for decades. Their rivals Renault and PSA/Peugeot-Citroen have big growth plans for South America and Brazil, the region's biggest market. Let's take a look at the numbers: In the first eight months, Brazilian car and LCV sales grew 8.4 percent to 2.08 million while Germany fell 27.3 percent to 2.03 million, according to m…

Lamborghini, Ferrari and Bentley expand use of carbon fiber Rhoda Miel Automotive News Europe -- October 13, 2010 06:01 CET European carmakers such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bentley and McLaren made carbon-fiber composites the standard for high-end supercars. Now they're taking carbon fiber even further, creating new ways to reduce molding time and get more of the material into structural parts. Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A made its new technology the centerpiece of its Sesto Elemento concept, which was introduced Sept. 30 at the Paris auto show. The car uses carbon fiber for the passenger compartment, the front and rear-end structures, suspension components, the i…

TATA ARIA: INDIA'S FIRST CROSSOVER By Drew Johnson India’s Tata Motors is best known for making rugged SUVs – and of course its recent purchase of the Land Rover and Jaguar brands – but the off road-brand has just announced the launch of India’s first four-wheel drive crossover. Dubbed the Aria, Tata describes the CUV as “a luxurious creation with the finesse of a sedan and the muscle of an SUV all blended in one car.” At first glance, the Aria appears to be a Nissan interpretation of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class. However, the Aria has a higher ride height than your typical crossover, giving it the off-road chops of a traditional SUV. Inside the Aria features three rows…

Mercedes-Benz sold 118,600 cars worldwide last month, an increase of 13 percent compared with a year earlier and the best September sales result in its history, Daimler said. Global sales at the BMW Group, which includes the core BMW brand, Mini and Rolls-Royce, were up 16.8 percent at 142,950. BMW said growth was driven by its large models, with the 5 series sedan showing the strongest gains. Mercedes-Benz's sales in China were up 98 percent to 13,500. S…

Sept. car sales down 10.4% in w. Europe; no recovery seen Paul McVeigh New-car sales in western Europe fell by 10.4 percent in September, according to J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting. The UK-based market researchers now expect a 6.4 percent decline to 12.8 million in the region's car sales this year, followed by a 1.8 percent drop to 12.57 million next year as government austerity measures dampen large consumer purchases. "The market continues to compare poorly year-on-year to a 2009 market that was inflated by government scrappage incentives," J.D. Power said in a statement. The company said an annualized selling rate of 12.4 million is weak by historical standard…

Toyota, Honda race Daimler to gain hybrid foothold in Europe Automotive News Europe -- October 6, 2010 10:45 CET (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. are rushing to exploit their advantage in hybrid systems to make inroads in Europe. Daimler AG and PSA/Peugeot-Citroen plan to stop them before they have the chance. Toyota began selling the U.K.-built Auris compact hybrid in Europe in July and will add the Lexus CT 200h, a hybrid hatchback designed for Europe, in 2011. Honda will roll out a Jazz hatchback hybrid in Europe next year, adding to three gas- electric models it already sells in the region. Asian carmakers aim to use their edge in hybrid vehic…

German new car market to return to growth after sales decline slows in Sept. Automotive News Europe -- October 5, 2010 06:01 CET FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- After new car registrations in Germany declined at a significantly slower rate in September than in August, the VDA industry body said the German car market should return to growth towards the end of 2010. New car registrations fell 17.8 percent in September to 259,748 vehicles. Registrations fell 27 percent in August due to a high comparison with last year's month that was distorted by the country's scrapping scheme. "The trend change in new orders from domestic customers has finally been reached with September, when …

TATA MOTORS SELLS $750M IN STOCK TO REDUCE DEBT By Mark Kleis The ambitious Indian automaker, Tata Motors, has announced it will sell shares of stock worth $750 million - the proceeds from which will be utilized to help pay down some of the $4.5 billion in debt the automaker owns. Although $750 million may be a far cry from the tens of billions being discussed for General Motors' upcoming IPO, this sale, for starters, is not an IPO, only an isolated release of shares. Secondly, as Bloomberg points out, it is a significant amount because the automaker has originally announced intentions to sell $525 million worth, but higher than expected demand drove Tata to increase t…

BMW, Mercedes, Audi weigh tiniest models for U.S. 08:31 AM CAPTIONBy Virginia Mayo, AP Germany's famous luxury automakers are thinking the unthinkable -- bringing their smallest cars to the U.S. Audi, for instance, is weighing whether to bring its next-generation A1 compact car to America. BMW and Mercedes-Benz are also taking a close look at the market. German automakers have always hesitated in the past out of fear that their smallest cars would dilute their image as makers of the wor'd finest cars. But the Obama's new fuel economy standards have them over a barrel. They need smaller cars to offset the bigger, less fuel-effienct ones they plan to sell. "Consumers …

Euro market corners top vehicles Some of Detroit's most exciting models aren't offered to U.S. buyers Paris -- The first lesson I learned at the Paris Motor Show was that everything tastes better with a little more butter. Second, European carmakers have been holding out on us Americans, keeping some of their best vehicles on their side of the pond -- and giving us a bunch of leftovers. Even our own carmakers have been sending some of their coolest cars and crossovers abroad, allowing Europeans to fly down the autobahn in fantastic five-doors but never giving us the same Interstate opportunity. Oh, and I'm not including all of the diesel powertrains available in Euro…

Europe's carmakers grapple with low productivity Ola Kinnander and Tim Higgins / Bloomberg News General Motors Co.'s 1,300 workers in Antwerp, Belgium, are fighting for their jobs, hoping for a white knight to rescue the factory from closure. "We're trying to find an investor by the end of this month," said Luc van Grinsven, a union official at the 86-year-old plant, which makes an Astra model for GM's Opel unit. "If we don't, the factory will close at the end of the year." Antwerp is an anomaly. Not a single European automobile plant closed during the recession, while 18 assembly factories have been shuttered in the U.S. since 2008. European governments prevented the…

Kurylko Automotive News Europe -- October 4, 2010 06:01 CET PARIS -- BMW and Mercedes-Benz will bring to the United States several vehicles based on platforms smaller than what they currently sell there. BMW will bring a new front-wheel-drive family of cars in a class known as UKL, a German abbreviation for lower-compact-class cars. Asians Go Green in Paris By Christie Schweinsberg WardsAuto.com, Sep 30, 2010 4:52 PM Asian auto makers’ Paris debuts have a decidedly green hue. Almost all Japanese or Korean manufacturers are rolling out hybrid- or battery-electric vehicles at the Paris auto show, which opened to the media today. The eco-friendly models include the production Toyota Auris HEV, Honda Jazz HEV, European-spec Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicle and the concept Kia Pop and Nissan Townpod EVs. While not electrified, several other small, fuel-efficient cars also are taking their public bows, including the Hyundai ix20 multipurpose vehicle, Suzuki Swift subcompact and Toyota Verso-S,…

Japanese Auto Makers Drive Ahead With Fuel-Cell Vehicle Programs By Roger Schreffler and Mack Chrysler WardsAuto.com, Sep 29, 2010 9:00 AM TOKYO – Fuel-cell-powered vehicles may join the industry mainstream sooner than anyone thinks due to developments taking place in Asia. “Hydrogen energy and fuel-cell technologies have achieved greater acceptance and are likely to be phased in earlier in Asia, especially in Japan and South Korea, than anywhere else in the world,” writes Peter Hoffmann, publisher and editor of the Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Letter. Hoffmann particularly is upbeat about efforts by Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. Ltd. “Both auto makers have ind…

Japanese automakers expected to increase overseas production Christine Tierney / The Detroit News Japanese automakers, grappling with a strong currency and flagging demand in their home market, are likely to boost production abroad, adding the equivalent of four assembly plants in North America by 2017, according to new forecast. Coming: Honda Accord hybrid, Plug-in Toyota Prius, more 09:30 AM CAPTIONBy Mike Ditz, AP Honda will take another shot at making a hybrid out of the Accord, and will add a hybrid version of the Pilot family crossover as well. That's just one interesting tidbit from the product plans of Japan's Big 3, as laid out today by Automotive News. It goes like this: Honda. A redesigned Civic and CR-V crossover is on the way next year. A new Accord comes in summer of 2012. Honda had an Accord hybrid for a few years, but discontinued it because buyers didn't think a V-6 hybrid delivered enough gas mileage. Nissan. Global Vehicles Bitch-Slaps Mahindra... With A $35 Million Pickup Truck Order?! Global Vehicles alleges Mahindra delayed EPA certification on their built-in-India pickup trucks to purposely cancel the contract granting exclusive rights for distribution in the United States. Now Global Vehicles is fighting back — by placing a $35 million order?! Here's what Global Vehicles is saying: Global Vehicles believes that Mahindra purposely delayed the EPA certification process so it could invoke a contract clause that would allow it to walk away if the truck could not be certified for sale in the United States. Global Vehicles extended the deadline for certification three times…

Dollar's rise helps Germans Appreciation indirectly boosts value of their booming luxury car sales in China Christine Tierney / The Detroit News With the dollar up nearly 10 percent against the euro, Germany's luxury carmakers should be toasting a big jump in profits on their American car sales. But their Chinese business has proved to be even more lucrative. That's because Germany's carmakers traditionally hedge their currency exposure in North America and Japan to buffer the impact of currency swings. Similar to insurance, hedging protects exporters when currencies move in an unfavorable direction, but it also limits potential gains. As a result, Daimler AG, the …

German OEMs pick one electrical charging connector to rule them all by Jeremy Korzeniewski (RSS feed) on Sep 16th 2010 at 4:31PM One massive sticking point with electric cars is the lack of standards when it comes to plugging in the vehicle. In the 90s, the General Motors EV1 didn't use the same kind of plug as the Toyota RAV4 EV, and that meant electric vehicle charging stations had to keep multiple adapters on hand if they wanted to service to multiple machinery. If there's any hope that EVs will take off in popularity over the next few decades, some standardization is in order. To that end, German manufacturers Audi, BMW, Daimler (Mercedes-Benz and Smart), Porsche a…

The action lifted the Nikkei out of negative territory and the index surged as much as 3 percent at one stage. Automakers rose across the board with Toyota Motor Corp. surging 3.8 percent to 3,010 yen and Honda Motor Co. advancing 4 percent to 2,944 yen. Nissan…

Volkswagen AG's Audi luxury unit gained market share. Registrations fell 12 percent to 731,503 vehicles in August from a year earlier, Brussels-based industry group ACEA said Thursday. Japan, Inc. From the "Here We Go Again" File comes word that Japanese authorities intervened in the foreign-exchange market today, launching the dollar up sharply against the yen. They say the move is Japan's first foreign-exchange market intervention in more than six years. Really? We find that hard to believe. It may have been the first official move in six years, but when foreign currency manipulation is part of the standard operating procedure of the government there, we're not buying that explanation. At any rate, this will be a giant rice bowl of Not Good for the U.S.-based auto manufacturers in no time. Count on it.

Europeans win big from China's appetite for high-end cars September 14, 2010 - 11:45 pm ET China's rich are more likely to splurge on premium and superluxury cars than anyone else in the world. That finding comes from a recent report by Bernstein Research. London-based Bernstein analyst Max Warburton identified a premium car buyer as someone from a household with more than $100,000 (78,500 euros) of annual disposable income. In China, 231 out of every 1,000 car buyers who met that criterion in 2009 bought premium cars. Germany was No. 2 at 176 out of every 1,000 followed by the UK at 165. Spain ranked fourth (81) followed by Canada (59) and the United States (52) last…

The German SuperBrand Battle. Editor-in-Chief's Note: Audi (VW Group), BMW and Mercedes-Benz (Daimler) are locked in an all-out battle for prestige luxury bragging rights, and it's about to get even nastier. BMW (including its Mini brand) is out to increase its annual sales a staggering 55 percent by 2020, which equates to 2 million vehicles annually. They sold 1.29 million vehicles last year. And we all know VW's plan, which is to have Audi keep pouring on the coals and ratcheting up its sales numbers to pass BMW and Mercedes - while riding a huge wave of popularity in China - not to mention VW's plan to sell 800,000 vehicles in the U.S. by 2018. And Mercedes? They don't…

Merging Malaysia’s National Car Companies Hard to Justify, Analysts Say By Mack Chrysler WardsAuto.com, Aug 31, 2010 9:00 AM To unite Malaysia’s two national car companies or not; that is the question, but just how seriously such a move should be considered is unclear. Industry analysts believe a pairing of Proton Holdings Bhd and Perusahaan Otomobile Kedua Nasional Sdn Bhd (Perodua) would be awkward at best and hard to justify on several important counts. As national companies, both auto makers have been indulged and overprotected by the government for years, safely ensconced behind a wall of tariff barriers, tax exemptions, rebates, subsidies and other special…

Nissan, Hyundai reportedly duking it out for No. 2 Asian automaker in U.S. by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Aug 30th 2010 at 9:32AM Nissan has long been the number three Asian automaker in the U.S., lagging behind both Honda and Toyota on the sales charts. But the Japanese automaker has been on a bit of a roll of late, with 10 straight months of sales gains and an aggressive product onslaught planned for the next 24 months. Nissan would love to unseat Honda to finally sneak up to the number two slot in the States, but a funny thing's happening: Hyundai is doing its best to push Nissan down to number four. Nissan and Hyundai are currently in a dead heat in U.S. auto sales.…

Report: Mahindra says it has terminated U.S. dealer agreement by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Aug 28th, 2010 at 11:25AM Mahindra's four-year saga with Global Vehicles is taking so many turns, it should get a telenovela on Univision. However, commenters on that post noted a message on Mahindra's site indicating that the company's relationship with GV was kaput. Is it possible to either remove or move the "Start New Topic" button at the bottom of each thread. It's right where I'm used to the "Reply" button being. I can't say how many times I've accidentally found myself in the wrong area, just about to start a new topic, when all I wanted to do was reply with quotes. It seems unnatural that the "Reply" button is offset to the left of the other. It's not a terribly big deal, but it's fairly annoying to find myself there. This is seemingly the only forum that I find myself having this issue with ever since the forums were moved to this new style.

2011 MAHINDRA APPALACHIAN SEPTEMBER 22ND, 2009MARCH 12TH, 2009 By Mark Kleis Proving to be the longest lasting, most unpredictable rumor in the auto industry – handily ousting the Amarok flip-flop for top honors – Mahindra has yet again hit a major snag in its seemingly doomed quest to come to the U.S. It was only one week ago that Leftlane reported on the passing of the EPA emissions testing for the Mahindra truck, seemingly clearing the way for the small diesel-powered pickup to come stateside. Mahindra Tries To Dump Its Importer, U.S. Launch Left In Limbo By Richard Read Reporter August 27th, 2010 Things were going so well for Mahindra: Americans were ready for the pickups they'd been promising, the Environmental Protection Agency gave the company's diesels the green light, and Mahindra's U.S. importer, Global Vehicles, had put together a nationwide network of dealers to sell the trucks. Then things went south -- but not, as Georgia's Global Vehicles was expecting, Deep South. Yesterday, in a very brief post to its U.S. website, Mahindra said it had dropped Global as its American importer. Tensions between the two companies had been on the rise since Glob…

Four Nissan, Toyota SUVs Offer Lackluster Rollover Protection By Bengt Halvorson Deputy Editor August 19th, 2010 2010 Toyota 4Runner TrailEnlarge PhotoSeveral popular mid-size SUVs from Nissan and Toyota—the 2010 Nissan Xterra, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota 4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder—have earned only lackluster rollover ratings in the latest round of testing from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). But these ratings, just released from insurance-funded testing authority, don't say anything about the vehicles' propensity to roll over (unlike those from the federal government); rather, they gauge the likelihood of serious injury and the amount of structu…

GAZ Siber to switch from Chrysler Sebring to MB E-Class?! Russian automotive manufacturer GAZ is being courted by a number of handsome suitors, according to Inside Line. While the company currently produces the Volga Siber at its Gorky Automobile plant, there's some indication that Daimler may want the facility to switch to building the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The move would kinda sorta be an all-in-the-family affair as the Siber is currently built off of the old Chrysler Sebring platform. With Chrysler out of Daimler's portfolio and Mercedes-Benz looking to take the Russian assault to its rival BMW, the move would make plenty of sense. It would also seem to be a rather l…

EU’s Struggling Economies Yet to See Recovery in Car Sales, Prices By Keith Nuthall WardsAuto.com, Aug 16, 2010 9:00 AM Passenger-car prices in Eastern Europe have tumbled along with vehicle sales as a result of the global recession significantly faster than in Western Europe, impeding attempts to create a unified automotive market that spans the continent. A key benefit of the European Union for the auto industry was supposed to be the tariff-free sale of vehicles between its 27-member states. By removing the bureaucratic barriers preventing such purchases, the EU has tried to create one unified auto market for its combined population of 500 million people. But sur…

Russian auto sales jump 45+ percent in June, July By Mark Kleis Like the U.S. and other global auto markets, Russia faced a steep decline in auto sales during the economic instability of 2009, and now the market appears to be showing signs of recovery after posting two consecutive months of increased sales nearing 50 percent compared to 2009. The Association of European Business (AEB) has reported the latest auto sales in Russia, and according to a report by Reuters, for the month of July Russia moved 173,171 new cars from dealer lots, narrowly missing the performance in June that resulted in 174,838 sales. Europe's carmakers face an anxious second half August 3, 2010 - 12:01 am ET European automakers have been buoyed by better-than-expected first-half results as the region's car sales largely held steady despite the phasing out of government incentives, but the good news won't last much longer. Volume manufacturers selling cars in Europe believe the second half of the year will be difficult due to the ending of incentives and the introduction of tough austerity measures in European countries hit by fiscal crises. What's worrying companies is that they are not sure how bad it will be. Credit Suisse's David Arnold said: "The question is how does the second half play out.…

Nanotech Standards Coming to European Auto Industry By Keith Nuthall and Mark Rowe WardsAuto.com, Aug 2, 2010 9:00 AM As auto manufacturers start to realize the utility of incorporating parts and components using nanotechnology to improve their performance, the European Union is looking hard at special regulations to protect the public and the environment from nanoparticles. It's funny, I've started noticing the banner ads occasionally, and today noticed ones for a Chevy dealer and another for a VW dealer. Yet the dealers were in the Oakland, CA area, though I'm in Chandler, AZ encubed. Must be the ip address or something.

Nissan, Hyundai profits soar; U.S., China seen slowing July 29, 2010 - 4:16 am ET SEOUL/YOKOHAMA, Japan (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co's forecast-beating quarterly profits may prove tough to match in the second half as robust sales in China and elsewhere start to slow. A patchy recovery in the U.S. market has become one of the biggest concerns for the auto industry, especially Japanese automakers, which rely heavily on the region for its profits. Nissan, Japan's No.3 automaker, reported its strongest quarterly operating profit in more than two years as sales surged, but it left its cautious guidance unchanged amid an increasingly murky outlook for d…

Japanese automakers expect higher earnings Christine Tierney / The Detroit News Japan's leading automakers are expected to report higher earnings for the fiscal first quarter begun on April 1 despite weakness in the United States and Europe, two of their major markets. Analysts say a recovery in Asian markets and rising demand in Japan will underpin their results. Nissan Motor Co. is scheduled to report first-quarter earnings on Thursday, followed by Honda Motor Co.'s on Friday and Toyota Motor Corp.'s next Wednesday. "The recovery trend should be firmly in place with marked year-on-year improvement," Deutsche Bank analyst Kurt Sanger wrote in a report. He listed Nis…

Japanese automakers report production recovery Associated Press Tokyo -- Japanese automakers reported sharp increases Tuesday in global production for the first half of the year, and for June in particular -- with Toyota seeing a 16.2 percent surge, underlining a recovery in auto demand from a dismal plunge a year earlier. Toyota Motor Corp., the world's biggest automaker, said it produced 739,683 vehicles in June, as sales grew in Japan and abroad, and exports expanded to North America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. For the first half, Toyota's worldwide production totaled 4.36 million vehicles, marking a 46.8 percent rise from the previous year -- underlining th…

Toyota and Japanese under attack in Europe as Koreans close in Toyota is on the retreat in Europe as well as America, as its reputation for writing the book on quality was trashed by the recall debacle. But the noise surrounding the global recall of 9.4 million Toyotas and upmarket Lexus vehicles has drowned out a deeper and wider malaise which started way before the unintended acceleration crisis hit last year, and which also involves most Japanese companies operating in Europe. Their market share has been declining for some time and the South Koreans are taking it. Hyundai and its sister company Kia of Korea are using the old Japanese play book against the originator…

Why China's rise is good and bad for Germany July 20, 2010 - 11:00 pm ET Douglas A. Bolduc Douglas A. Bolduc is a special correspondent for Automotive News Europe BMW's, Mercedes-Benz's and Audi's German plants are running at full speed right now. The reason: wealthy car buyers in China currently have an insatiable desire to own German luxury cars. "There are more than 900,000 millionaires in China and many of them are bursting to show off their wealth," Sascha Gommel, a Frankfurt-based analyst with Commerzbank AG, told Bloomberg last week. To keep up with the demand in the world's largest car market, Daimler has hired 1,800 temporary workers and added Saturday shift…

Daimler, BMW Surge on ‘Bottomless’ Appetite for German Luxury July 16, 2010, 6:05 PM EDT July 17 (Bloomberg) -- Daimler AG’s E-Class Mercedes-Benz, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG’s new 5-Series and Volkswagen AG’s revamped Audi A8 are attracting wealthy buyers in the U.S. and China, prompting the German carmakers to boost deliveries. Daimler raised a full-year forecast yesterday after second- quarter profit beat analysts’ estimates. BMW this week lifted its 2010 sales and earnings projections. Audi’s first-half increase in vehicle sales beat both BMW and Daimler’s. “The Chinese appetite for German nameplates is absolutely bottomless,” said Sascha Gommel, a Frankfurt-base…

Europe baulks at GM-style shakeout that could transform prospects Europe's automotive manufacturers lack the will to rid themselves of unprofitable operations that threaten their future, and experts predict a future of muddling through rather than decisive action to restore health and profits. At a conference in Bilbao, Spain, last month, Ford Europe Chairman and CEO John Fleming said overcapacity had reached 35 percent and was getting worse. In a sane world, this would mean that the least productive producers in Europe would be under pressure to close. After all, the existence of a chronically inefficient manufacturer simply makes it uneconomic for everybody. As the w…

European car market drops for third straight month July 15, 2010 08:16 CET FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- The European car market fell in June for the third straight month as the artificial boost from scrapping schemes across the continent continued to abate, hurting sales for Fiat S.p.A., Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. Registrations of new vehicles in the European Union dropped 6.9 percent to 1.34 million units last month driven mainly by sharp declines in Germany and Italy, according to data published on Thursday by the European industry association ACEA. Hardest hit among major brands was the Fiat marque, heavily dependent on both its domestic Italian market as well…

NHTSA probes BMW Z4, Mazda3 over steering issues By Drew Johnson The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a new investigation involving the BMW Z4 and Mazda3 over steering concerns. The NHTSA’s probe is looking into a possible power-steering defect. The NHTSA has received a total of 107 steering complaints involving the 2003-2005 BMW Z4 and 33 complaints against the 2007-2009 Mazda3. One of the BMW complaints resulted in a crash while three of the Mazda3’s reported cases ended in a collision. According to the NHTSA, the BMW Z4’s “steering wheel sticks, binds or locks up, and requires increased steering effort resulting in difficulty controlling …

German car industry thriving again Weak euro makes sought-after European vehicles affordable Juergen Baetz / Associated Press Berlin -- Germany's car industry, the backbone of Europe's largest economy, is booming again. Fueled by the huge appetite for German luxury cars in China and the fact that the plunging euro has made European products cheaper abroad, manufacturers say they are shaking off the last of the economic downturn, adding extra shifts and hiring more workers to meet increasing demand. Mercedes, Volkswagen, BMW and Audi told the Associated Press this week that order books are full and some plants are operating at full capacity, and that they are bullish …

Europe's premium flagship sedans return to health, flaunting new technology Europe's premium top-of-the-range car manufacturers are defying logic as they pick themselves up and dust themselves down after the great slump of 2009. You would think that the days of these massive, gas guzzling, hugely expensive behemoths - like the Mercedes S class, BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ - would be numbered. After all, the days of conspicuous consumption are surely over for a while at least. And new regulations in the European Union and United States will soon start forcing car manufacturers to drastically cut fuel consumption. When these carbon dioxide (CO2) emission rules we…

Is the Cheers and Gears site or its hosting company being "protected" by OpenDNS? I ask because I keep getting a "Phishing Site Blocked" message... then a few minutes later, it clears. Its happening when I use TW Cable... but I doubt they are providing it, to the best of my knowledge. In fact, I don't use their DNS... I use my own DNS server I built myself at a remote co-location site. I also doubt that the local antivirus and tools or whatever is doing the blocking... I work in this industry... not a novice. Anyway, I thought I'd bring it up to see if anyone else is having this problem. I suspect that perhaps one of the ads is triggering this blockage... but it would…

Small Japanese SUVs outpacing supply in Beijing 04/28/2010, 2:19 AM BY MARK KLEIS While attending the ongoing Beijing Auto Show, consumers are being presented with seemingly countless options of electric and hybrid gas-electric vehicles. Outside of the show, however, consumers are opting for gas-powered SUVs and shunning hybrids and electric vehicles at dealers. According to Gasgoo, several Toyota and Honda dealers in Beijing are complaining of shortages of small SUVs, while hybrid vehicles are having to be sold at a loss to clear them from dealer lots. Beijing Honda dealers explain that customers in Chaoyang, a district of Beijing, must wait two months to receive the…

PSA resists merger, answers Marchionne with sales growth April 23, 2010 06:01 CET PARIS (Bloomberg) -- PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, the carmaker predicted by Fiat S.p.A. CEO Sergio Marchionne to be the next European candidate for an auto merger, has won more time to prove that it can go it alone. Marchionne announced Wednesday plans to separate carmaking from its industrial units such as trucks and construction equipment to facilitate future alliances, saying he has a “long list” of further candidates for partnerships. PSA CEO Philippe Varin says he plans to build on its looser industrial cooperation with the Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi Motor Corp. and similar pacts with Fiat…

PSA also has an engine partnership with BMW AG. The companies said in Febr…

Such a move could unlock value for the company and cheer the market. There has been regular speculation on the possibility of Fiat listing its auto activities separately. These include its Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia brands as well as U.S. carmaker Chrysler, in which Fiat has a 20 percent stake. "Let's talk about it on April 21," Marchionne told reporters on the sidelines of the Geneva auto show w…

Meanwhile, Chrysler Group, the biggest sales loser last year among car groups, was walloped by the magazine. Subaru and Honda tied as class leaders in the magazine's Automaker Report Cards, published in Consumer Reports' 2010 annual auto issue. Honda had earned the top rating by itself in the three previous years. Last year, Subaru was second. The overall score for each automaker is based on the average of its vehicles' overall sc…

Suzuki, Nissan, Daihatsu announce recalls in Japan Associated Press Tokyo -- Japanese carmakers Suzuki, Nissan and Daihatsu have recalled hundreds of thousands of vehicles in Japan over separate defects, the Transport Ministry said this week. Suzuki Motor Co. recalled 432,366 vans belonging to two models -- the Every and Scrum -- produced from August 2005 to October 2009 over a design flaw in air conditioning parts that could cause a fire. Suzuki found two cases of partial fire damage, but no deaths or injuries were reported, the ministry said. Nissan Motor Co., meanwhile, recalled 76,415 vehicles from 10 models, including the Tida, Note and March, over defective wiri…

Europe's carmakers say economy is far from stable Automotive News Europe -- February 24, 2010 08:54 CET FRANKFURT (Reuters) – The European auto industry does not expect a quick recovery this year, said Dieter Zetsche, president of the Brussels-based industry body ACEA. Zetsche, who is also CEO of Daimler AG, warned that sales of commercial vehicles that closely follow the economic cycle would "at best be flat" after dropping by one-third in 2009. "If the economy looks better in 2010, it's only when compared with 2009. And that's why it is so critically important not to endanger whatever little stabilization has been achieved," he said in prepared remarks at the 2010 …

Report: Asian automakers closing in on 50% share of U.S. auto sales While it may come as no surprise that Asian car companies are constantly gaining market share in the U.S. market, the actual numbers are quite amazing. Ten years ago, companies like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and the rest accounted for a little more than one-quarter of total light-vehicle sales in the States. By 2005, that figure stood at 36.6 percent. By 2007? 41.9 percent. In 2009, Asian automakers sold a full 47.9 percent of the cars and light trucks we Americans bought. These numbers come from the latest report by Ward's Auto. Perhaps predictably, that same dispatch tells us that American automa…

Several other websites have a link to be able to allow a user to go back to previous posts, instead of having to search thru topic titles.. In some cases you may not even remember the topic title, but would like to go back to it, and see what responses may have been added. Another fast connection link needed is current topics, instead of, again, having to search thru the whole format.

Japanese cash for clunkers program draws criticism 12/10/2009, 4:24 PMBY MARK KLEIS Detroit’s Big Three automakers are voicing concern over Japan’s version of the cash for clunkers program, which declares virtually all imported vehicles ineligible for government rebates. The Big Three have taken their concerns to the U.S. Government in a call for action. Japan has recently launched its own version of the cash for clunkers program in an effort to spur its economy and shore up struggling new cars sales which are down 34.7 percent from their peak. However, unlike the American cash for clunkers initiative, Japan’s program specifically outlaws the eligibility of imported ve…

Not sure what I missed, or how to find what everyone's been talking about for the last day or so.
