At the New York Auto Show this week, Hyundai unveiled the 2025 Hyundai Tuscon. This mild refresh modernizes the Tuscon and brings it more into alignment with the rest of the Hyundai lineup, including their EVs. The exterior styling updates, largely consisting of a front fascia update, are subtle. Inside, Hyundai made the interior more open and airy with a new, lower-height dashboard featuring a panoramic gauge and infotainment screen. The screens consist of twin 12.3-inch displays with crisper colors and graphics, as well as faster processing speeds. While the screens can control all functions of the car, Hyundai still included physical buttons for th…

Today at the New York International Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled an update to its little truck, the Hyundai Santa Cruz. Inside, there is a new steering wheel, infotainment system, and instrument panel. on upper trims, an optional panoramic curved display houses dual 12.3-inch displays for driver and entertainment. During the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai displayed their SEVEN concept, a highly futuristic three-row EV roughly the size of the company's Palisade. It was assumed at the time that when this vehicle came to market in production form, it would wear the Ioniq 7 nameplate. A recent report to Automotive News (subscription required) has said that the name will now change to Ioniq 9 to better align with Kia's EV9 SUV and also give space below for additional Ioniq models to come. Hyundai is busy making Ioniq into its own brand, with several vehicles planned in the coming years, including some Hyundai Ioniq trucks. The Ioniq 9 is expected to break cover in June this …

The year was 2015, the Santa Cruz concept pickup was shown off at the LA auto show sporting a turbo diesel with 190 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Excitement was strong for Hyundai to bring a mid-size pickup to market. Yet folks' excitement started to wane when no truck came out in the preceding few years. It took Hyundai till 2021 to finally bring out an all-new Santa Cruz pickup. Now there are rumors of Hyundai bringing out an electric pickup. This has been confirmed based on two independent trademark filings. First was a filing for IONIQ T10 on December 27th, 2023 and confirmed by the governments trademark office on February 1st, 2024. Now we have d…

Just last week, we reported that the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Traverse will see a large price jump. In what is looking to be an industry trend, Hyundai just reported significant price increases for its large mid-size 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe. The new 2024 Santa Fe base price starts at $33,950 plus a destination charge of $1,395, bringing the out-the-door MSRP to $35,345. That is $5,260 more expensive than a 2023 Santa Fe SE at $28,750 plus $1,335 destination. The middle-of-the-road "rugged" trim XRT sees the largest jump in price, climbing $6,350 from $34,250 to $40,600 before destination charges. Buyers of the base hybrid trim see the least of the increase, only $2,540 f…

Electric cars have great acceleration, but they can seem dull to drive. Hyundai didn't get that memo when creating the 640-horsepower Ioniq 5 N. They tout that the Ioniq 5 N is truly fun and a "corner rascal". Piloting the Ioniq 5 N at the Nürburgring was Sport Auto's test driver, Christian Gebhardt. Gebhardt has driven both the Ioniq 5 N and last-generation BMW M2 CS. The Ioniq 5 N completed a time of 7 minutes and 49.59 seconds, only 2.6 seconds slower than the BMW. Back in 2020, Gebhardt completed a time of the Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 42.99 seconds. Hyundai used Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, while the last-generation M2 CS had Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s. Wi…

Ju-yung Chung founding Chairman of Hyundai wanted to help rebuild Korea after the Korean War and improve the lives of the people. He introduced at the 1974 Turin Motor Show the Pony Coupe Concept. To quote Hyundai: "The two-door sports car’s exterior featured a sleek roofline, pure surfaces, dynamic proportion profiles and a unique shape for the B pillar, which elevated its daring spirit. The interior showcased an iconic sensibility with the Giugiaro monocoque design and driver-centered floating architecture. With its unique aesthetic sensibility, the 1974 Pony Coupe Concept was a groundbreaking model in its time. Unfortunately, due to the adverse g…

Hyundai today released images of their latest Hyundai Sonata refresh for 2024. This is a rather quick turnaround as the current Hyundai Sonata was released in 2019 as a 2020 model. This could be the last hurrah for the Sonata because it is rumored that Hyundai will ax the Sonata nameplate at the end of this run. While the current Sonata is one of the more handsome designs in the dwindling sedan market, Hyundai felt the refresh was necessary to bring the Sonata in line with their EV lineup. The visual similarities between the 2024 Sonata and the recently released Hyundai Ioniq 6 aren't by accident. While riding on the same platform, externally, the 2024 Sonata ado…

Hyundai Motor's is on a fast forward push toward electrification from their luxury division Genesis to the core Hyundai auto's and even their budget brand Kia. All three brands are pushing hard to be electrified totally by 2030 and with that, the industry overall has gone with consumers taste for SUVs and trucks as more and more auto companies kill off the cars. Hyundai brought out their N sub-brand for only a couple performance focused ICE auto's and while outstanding in their selective categories, customers have asked for more including the electrified crowd wanting more performance in their EVs as they start to come out on the global market. Hyundai is showin…

Automotive News is reporting that internal sources have indicated that Hyundai will not develop a new generation of the Sonata once the current model run has complete. Similar reports regarding the fate of the Kia K5, the replacement for the Kia Optima, seem to confirm this as both vehicle share a common platform. The current Sonata went on sale in 2019 as a 2020 model while the K5 started production in 2019 in overseas markets and went on sale in the U.S. as a 2021 model. Sales of both sedans has dropped dramatically with the Sonata reaching a peak of around 230,000 U.S, sales in 2012 and the K5/Optima reaching almost 160,000 U.S. sales in 2015. Sales were around 93,…

Effective December 23rd, Hyundai Motor Co. the group's largest automaker closed the engine development division at their R&D center. The 12,000 researchers have all been reassigned. The start of anything is always a challenge, so it comes as no surprise that a company that has been disruptive from the start with extreme auto warranties decides to not hold back when it comes to the next technology change in the auto industry. Hyundai has released full details of their all-new IONIQ 5 BEV CUV with the goal of disrupting the industry from the start of what people expect from an electric auto. Today many talk about re-charging times and range as the two biggest concerns with electrification of auto's. Hyundai has chosen to disrupt the EV market by not only ensuring that there is plenty of range in their first EV auto but also ensuring you have ultra…

It is surprising to think it has been over six years since Hyundai first showed the Santa Cruz pickup concept at the Detroit Auto Show. But today, Hyundai has unveiled the production version. The automaker isn't calling this a truck, instead using the term "Sport Adventure Vehicle". To us, it's a truck. We need to start with a bit of a reality check. The Santa Cruz is not a direct competitor to the likes of Chevrolet Colorado, Honda Ridgeline, or Toyota Tacoma in terms of measurements. Compared to those models, the Santa Cruz is around 10 to 17 inches shorter in length. Overall height is around 3 to 4 inches shorter. The bed measures 4.3 feet, which is about foot sho…

Hyundai is planning on 23 electric vehicles for the global market between now and 2025. A key part of that is the Ioniq sub-brand which the brand previewed last year. The first model of this new brand was introduced this morning in South Korea. The Ioniq 5 is a compact 'crossover' that looks nearly identical to the 45 concept shown two years ago. Details such as edgy hatchback shape with creases along the doors, square headlights, flush door handles, and a set of 20-inch aero wheels are sure to draw a lot comment. Dimension-wise, the Ioniq 5 occupies an interesting space. Length: 182.5 inches (about two inches longer than the Elantra) Width: 74.4 inches…

A new brand will join under the Hyundai umbrella come next year. Dubbed Ioniq, this brand will focus on electric vehicles and launch their first model come 2021. That first model will be a midsize crossover called the Ioniq 5. Based on the 45 Concept first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, the 5 follows a different beat in terms of design from other Hyundai models with sharp lines and corners, narrow grille, and a interior that is very minimalist. Spy shots from earlier in the year showed that Hyundai is planning to make this into a production model, likely using an electric powertrain. Next up is the 6 which again will base its design on another Hyun…

SEOUL/DETROIT/CHONGQING, China (Reuters) - At a near-empty Hyundai Motor showroom in the Chinese mega city of Chongqing, the store manager is grumbling about his shortage of customers and a lack of bigger, cheaper SUV models popular in the world's largest auto market. Even with discounting of as much as 25 percent, his dealership was selling barely a hundred vehicles a month, said the manager surnamed Li. A nearby Nissan dealership was selling about 400 vehicles a month, a store manager there said. "The sales are simply poor," Li told Reuters. "Look at the Nissan store next door, they have tens of customers while we just have two." An hour's drive away is H…

The Hyundai Santa Cruz has been talked about off and on since its debut as a concept in 2015. But it seems the truck is finally coming to fruition as some new spy shots reveal. Compared to the concept which was an extended cab, Hyundai is using a crew cab layout. The bed is quite short, possibly around four to five feet being our guess. Up front, the Santa Cruz gets the same front end treatment as the refreshed 2021 Santa Fe - wider front grille and new headlight treatment. Following in the footsteps of the Honda Ridgeline, the Santa Fe will be based on a unibody platform. In this case, the Santa Fe. This likely means power will come from either the 2.4L four-cy…

Hyundai has announced that is has developed the world's first road noise countering active noise control system. While active noise control is available in many makes and models, it is limited to when the noise is constant and predictable. Hyundai's new system is able to analyze noise at a much faster pace. The digital sound processor can respond to a noise in 0.002 seconds. Cabin microphones constantly monitor road noise and then the speaker system emits sound waves that cancel out drone or engine roughness. Hyundai says they are able to decrease cabin noise by up to 3dB. That means that noise is cut nearly in half as compared to running without RANC. In EVs that…

The Hyundai Sonata is likely to make a big splash with its good looks when it hits dealers in a few weeks. One thing that was missing from the original release of the Sonata was an up-level engine option. To review, the Sonata can be optioned with a 191 horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or a 180 horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with a wide peak torque band and 195 lb.-ft. Gone is the 245 horsepower 2.0-liter turbo. Back in April, Hyundai confirmed that it would produce an N-Line version of the car with 275 horsepower. That car is likely to be debuting at the LA Auto Show later this month. The kicker is the N-line is not the full performance edition like …

Last week we reported on a teaser that Hyundai sent out about it's upcoming hydrogen truck concept. Today, it's here. Meet the HDC-6 Neptune, a Class-8 semi-truck that runs on hydrogen fuel cells. Hyundai says that fuel cells are a better fit for long haul driving than batteries due to the lower refueling time, higher range, and higher payload. The styling of the concept is inspired by the Art Deco designs by Henry Dreyfuss of the New York Central railroad in the 1930s. The fuel cell powertrain gave Hyundai the opportunity to change the classic layout of a Class-8 truck. They took the technical requirements and found new ways to combine form and function. For exam…

Hyundai Motor Group has announced they have developed the first Machine Learning based Smart Cruise Control (SCC-ML). This new technology can read the driver's behavior and incorporate the driving style into the cruise control's system. It incorporates artificial intelligence with advanced driver assistant system that is essential to self-driving technology. Previously, the driver had to manually adjust factors like distance to the next vehicle and acceleration. Now with machine learning, the SCC can fine-tune these settings by reading a driver's habits. Even the same driver may accelerate differently depending on the situation. SCC is now able to read those diffe…

Hyundai is set to debut a hydrogen powered fuel cell semi-truck at the North American Commercial Vehicle show in Atlanta next week. The truck, named the HDC-6 Neptune is named after the Roman god of the sea, the largest source of hydrogen on earth. Not much is known yet about the truck, but in the teaser it is shown to be a very art deco design that Hyundai says is based on the streamline trains of the 1930s. Hyundai currently offers trucks from Class 2 to Class 8 and buses. Look for an update on October 29th. View full article

The EPA has released the fuel economy numbers for the 2020 Hyundai Venue and they look pretty darn good. Remember that the Hyundai Venue is offered with a choice of two transmissions, a 6-speed manual and a CVT. The CVT is the fuel miser with a rating of 30 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined. The manual clocks in at 27 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The closest competitor, the Nissan Kicks does a little better at 31 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined. Other non-hybrid crossovers in the segment are a little bit larger and a bit more powerful, so the Venue beats them there. The Venue is powered by a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder producin…

Hyundai has released released details of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. While visually it remains close to the non-hybrid version, it does get a different grille, rear spoilers, and special alloy wheels to fine tune aerodynamics. Hyundai has two technologies debuting on the 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. First is a solar roof system that recharges the battery to increase travel distance and unnecessary battery discharge. When the system gets an average of 6 hours a day of charging, it is expect to increase travel distance by about 800 miles annually. The second is a new 6-speed hybrid automatic transmission with Active Control Shift (ACS). The transmission is …

Hyundai first showed the Santa Cruz pickup truck concept at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show and has teased the truck to the public in the 4 years since its debut. Now it seems that the Vice President of Product, Corporate, and Digital Planning is saying the Korean auto maker is expecting to enter the U.S. truck market soon with a model built in North America, and possibly in the U.S. Hyundai already builds the Santa Fe crossover in Montgomery Alabama. The Santa Cruse that was shown at NAIAS was a crossover vehicle similar to the Honda Ridgeline and featured a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine, a tailgate which could extend out further from the truck, and rear hinged rear d…

Last week, Hyundai released images of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata sedan, but was scant with the technical details. Today, Hyundai revealed that the 2020 Sonata will ride on a new Third-Generation platform designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and driving performance. The platform underpinning the 2020 Sonata will eventually find its way into other products. On the safety front, the platform uses super high tensile steel, hot stamping, and a multi-load path structure. The Multi-load path helps in a collision by increasing the amount of energy absorbed by the structure and reduces intrusions into the passenger cabin. In a small frontal overlap crash, the tires are des…

Hyundai and Kia find in themselves in a bit of legal trouble. Last week, the law firm Hagens Berman filed a class-action lawsuit against the Korean automakers over an alleged defect on two engines; the 2.4L four-cylinder and turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder from the Theta II family. The defect in question is a flaw in the engine design that “restricts or blocks oil flow to the engine’s moving parts, such as connecting rod bearings, prematurely wearing out those parts to the point that the engine parts seize, which stops engine operation while running. Engine seizure often causes internal parts, such as the connecting rods, to break and knock a hole in the engine, per…

Hyundai was planning on offering three different powertrains for the Santa Fe; the 2.4L four-cylinder as the base, an optional turbocharged 2.0L turbo-four, and a new 2.2L turbodiesel. The diesel would also be the only Santa Fe model to offer a third-row. But Green Car Reports has learned the diesel option has been canned. Brandon Ramirez, a spokesman for Hyundai confirmed the cancellation of the diesel during a first drive event of the Palisade in South Korea. The reason was due studies showing that consumers were not as willing to purchase a diesel as before. Likely helping this is the downward trend in gas prices and the increasing push into electrification. The d…

Chris Chapman, senior chief designer at Hyundai's Design Center has an ambitious plan for the coming years. He wants each Hyundai model to have their own visual identity. "We're going for more of this chess-piece rather than the family look. We're using consistently shared elements … but we're going to avoid this sort of Russian-doll approach to our vehicles in the future," Chapman told reporters at the media launch of the Kona EV. Designers will be tasked to give each model "a look that matches its intended use and customer." Take for example the Kona crossover which has a funky look that should appeal to a younger audience than the new Santa Fe. Another exampl…

Hyundai had a bit of surprise last night for journalists at the first drive event for the 2019 Santa Fe. They unveiled a refreshed 2019 Elantra sedan. The company's designers really had a thing for triangles since there are a lot on the Elantra's front end. The headlights and cutouts in the front bumper are of the three-sided variety. The large grille appears to be borrowed from the Nexo hydrogen crossover. Around back, the Elantra takes the idea of a smoothed-out trunk lid from the Sonata. Inside, Hyundai only makes some minor changes with a new center stack design and updated trim pieces. SEL models and above will get a number of active safety features such as b…

Hyundai's N performance division has its eye on building a hotted-up Kona. Albert Biermann, head of the N sub-brand tells Auto Express that he has asked engineers to begin work on a test mule. Ever since Hyundai revealed the Santa Cruz concept back at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, there have been questions whether or not it would make it to production. The last we heard anything about the truck was last August where the home office finally gave the green light to go forward with the project. No time frame was given at the time. Speaking to Motor Trend, Hyundai Motor America's chief operating officer Brian Smith said Santa Cruz will likely arrive in 2020 or so. Smith also revealed that the model would be using the Tuscon's platform. “We love it, we talk about it a lot,” said Smith. It is unclear whether Hyundai is planning to change up the Santa Cr…

The topic of the N performance division came up and Auto Express asked if there are plans for expansion. "Tucson is under development, and other models will come after that,” Rhim said. We first heard about a fast Tucson last May when the head of N, Albert Biermann expressed interest in building one. "We started with the [i30] C segment and the Fastback [coupe] will follow and we are already working on some other concepts for the B segment [Accent] and SUV also. Right now we are open," said Biermann. Auto Express think…

Hyundai has finally released more details on the next-generation 2019 Santa Fe crossover. Like the current-generation Santa Fe, Hyundai will offer two variants. The standard Santa Fe will offer seating for up to five people, while a larger Santa Fe XL will likely carry up to seven. Hyundai is making the new Santa Fe look more SUV-like than crossover. It features a boxy shape with muscular lines. Overall length measures out to 187.8 inches, up 2.8-inches over the Santa Fe Sport. The interior looks quite handsome with an updated dash design, optional leather upholstery, a large screen for the instrument cluster, and a seven-inch infotainment system. Th…

Hyundai is already selling the i30 N in Europe and has introduced the Veloster N for North America. What's next for Hyundai's sub-performance brand. Speaking with Car and Driver, Hyundai’s head of high-performance development Albert Biermann revealed that next up are models known as N Sport. This will slot between the mainstream and N models that will offer tuning “for a more sporty driving experience.” The changes will also include visual changes inside and out, along with “a different tire than what’s in the normal range.” Biermann also revealed that N Sport could appear on any Hyundai model, regardless whether or not they have an N model. Along with the N Spo…

Hyundai has revealed a couple pictures of the next-generation Santa Fe crossover. The new model looks nothing like the current model with a more imposing profile. Up front, Hyundai has taken some ideas from the subcompact Kona with a similar grille shape and very slim headlights. Hyundai says the new Santa Fe is longer and wider than the outgoing model. Inside, the Santa Fe appears to be more premium with leather seats, stitching on the dash, and a new instrument cluster with a center mounted screen. No information was provided in terms of powertrains, but Hyundai has revealed some of the active safety features that will be debuting. First is rear cross-traffic collis…

Hyundai was caught off guard by the rise of crossovers with their car heavy lineup. This has caused their sales to fall down. But the Korean automaker is hoping to change that with the announcement of eight new or redesigned crossover models by 2020. The plan will begin with the launch of the Kona crossover in March and will include a wide range of models from a small A-segment model to 8-seat midsize model taking the place of the Santa Fe. There are also plans for an electric, hydrogen, and diesel powered models. The electric one is likely the Kona. “The Kona is only the beginning of our product revolution for Hyundai. These vehicles are aimed squarely at the sal…

Hyundai has announced that the upcoming Kona crossover would be coming with an electric powertrain and we have gotten our first look at it. A spy photographer caught a Kona EV mule charging up. It looks like your standard Kona with the only difference that there is a charging door on the front. We're assuming this means a solid panel takes the place of the standard grille. Current rumors have Hyundai offering two battery options for the Kona EV - 40 and 64 kWh. The larger battery is projected to have a range of around 210 miles. Expect to see the Kona EV debut sometime next year with sales beginning in late 2018 or 2019. It is unclear whether or not the m…

Purchasing a car at a dealership is a stressful and painful experience: Finding the right vehicle, dealing with various sales and finance people, mountains of paperwork, and so on. Hyundai is hoping a new program will make the experience slightly better. Hyundai Shopper Assurance promises to streamline the buying process with four key parts; fair-market pricing (MSRP minus incentives and dealer discounts), flexible test drives at a customer's place of choice, streamlined purchasing process, and three-day money back guarantee. “Shopper Assurance is the next step in that tradition and is car buying made simple. We expect this to be a differentiator, as our research…

Hyundai finally decided to spill the beans on the 2018 Accent for the U.S. by debuting it yesterday at the Orange County International Auto Show in Anaheim, California. Let's get to the most important news for the U.S.; the 2018 Accent will only be available as a sedan. Everywhere else will get a hatchback variant. Boo! Everything else pretty much is the same as our report when the Accent debuted at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. The 2018 Accent is more upscale in its design with a larger grille, new headlights, optional 17-inch alloy wheels, and rear-end styling borrowed from the Elantra. The interior is nothing too special to look…

At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled the Santa Cruz pickup concept. It was well received by the media and attendees to the show that Hyundai started making plans to possibly launch this truck, though the Korean home office had cold feet about this project. Much has changed since the debut of the Santa Cruz concept. Hyundai's sales have been falling as consumers are flocking to the likes of crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. So far in 2017, Hyundai has seen sales fall 11 percent. Michael J. O’Brien, Hyundai's Vice President of Corporate and Product Planning in the U.S. tells Reuters that the company's top brass has finally given the green light for the pickup pr…

Hyundai had a put a lot of confidence into hydrogen being the future power source for vehicles. But much like Toyota, the Korean automaker is realizing that electrics are the way of the future and they might want to jump on the bandwagon soon. Today at a press conference in Seoul, Hyundai announced that it would be placing electric vehicles front and center with plans to launch several long-range EVs in the coming years. This includes an electric version of the Kona early next year and an electric sedan for Genesis in 2021 that is expected to have a range of 310 miles. Hyundai also confirmed a report by Reuters saying the company is working on a dedicated EV platform…

Automakers know they have to stay on top of changing trends to be competitive or they'll end up behind the pack. That is currently the case with Hyundai as they are playing catch up to meet the growing demand for crossovers. But the company is readying an ambitious plan that will see their product design cycles cut in half. Luc Donckerwolke, senior vice president of design for Hyundai and Genesis tells Automotive News that he wants to cut the time that it takes from designing to production from about three years today to as little as a year and a half. "As life cycles get shorter, they will get drastically shorter. I have no doubt design can be shortened by hal…

A fresh stack of spy photos of the upcoming Hyundai Veloster N have made their way on to the web this week. The photos show the mule losing some of the camo that we have seen in previous spy shots and are able to pull some new details. The most apparent item is a new rear wing mounted the roof. We can also make out a set of large tailpipes and the front grille extending towards the bottom of the bumper, possibly hinting that there is an intercooler hiding behind it. We also got an idea of what is in store for the standard Veloster. Hyundai has decided to drop the split-window liftgate of the current model and go for a regular hatchback. We also note there is coupe-li…

After teasing us for a bit, Hyundai has finally pulled the curtains back on the first model from the new high-performance N division - the 2018 i30 N. It certainly looks the part with new bumpers, side skirts, rear spoiler, and the choice of 18 or 19-inch wheels. The i30 N's interior comes with new sport seats with blue stitching, a new steering wheel with blue buttons for the different driving modes, and aluminum pedals. Under the i30 N's hood is a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four with 246 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. An optional Performance Pack boosts horsepower to 271. Power is routed to the front wheels through a six-speed manual. 0-60 mph is said to…

Hyundai has been selling the Genesis sedan (what we know as the G80) in the United Kingdom since 2015 and has recently been axed. The reason? Hyundai only sold 50 Genesis sedans - not 500, but just 50. "The Genesis was never built for the European market, it was conceived for the Korean and American markets. It shows a saloon car with a 3.8-litre engine is not really what is demanded in Europe, and in particular in the UK," said Hyundai UK managing director Tony Whitehorn to Autocar. "We brought it in as much just to sample it: lots of people told us they’d driven a Genesis in America and liked it. It was also available in Australia and had done well there, so i…

Hyundai has been busy teasing their N Performance brand for Europe with the upcoming i30 N (Elantra GT to us). But soon, they will begin to do the same for the U.S. Speaking with various outlets this week in South Korea, head of N Albert Biermann said the U.S. would get their first taste of an N product next year. For a time, we thought that it would be Elantra GT. But it seems Hyundai has another product in mind. This morning in South Korea, Hyundai unveiled the 2018 Kona subcompact crossover. This is a big deal for the Korean automaker as it is the brand's first subcompact crossover. The Kona stands out from Hyundai's other crossovers thanks a polarizing design. Up front, the Kona features Hyundai's new mesh grille that debuted on the 2018 Sonata. The split headlights resemble those found on the Jeep Cherokee. A slim vent above the grille, flared out fenders with cladding, and a two-tone roof finish off the design. “With the Kona, we have created a stylish and highly functional compact SUV, perfectly suited to the needs of customers who pursue challenging, action-filled …

Later this summer, Hyundai will be revealing a new subcompact crossover called the Kona. To prepare us, the company has released some teasers. But thanks to some magic from Photoshop, we have a good idea of what it will look like. The front end comes with Hyundai's new grille that made its debut on the Sonata and a similar headlight arrangement like the Jeep Cherokee. There is also a little slit above the grille. Other design details on the Kona include black body cladding, significant sculpting on the doors, and a partly blacked-out rear pillar. We don't any mechanical details, but we're assuming it will be based on the redesigned Accent. Source: Hyundai Pr…

Hyundai chose the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Ontario to debut the all new 2018 Accent. Why Toronto and not Chicago a week before? You only need to look at the sales numbers to find the reason why. In 2016, the Nissan Versa soundly beat the Hyundai Accent by a margin of 52,448 vehicles (132,214 for Versa vs. 79,766 for the Accent) in the U.S. Over in Canada, the Accent is the best selling model in the class with 19,198 models sold last year. The Honda Fit which was the second best-selling model in the class only moved 8,622 models. You might mistake the Accent sedan for the Elantra. This is due to the Accent's new front and rear end styling looking l…

Hyundai has been seeing its sales declined as it doesn't have enough crossovers and SUV to feed the growing demand by consumers. This, in turn, is causing profits to drop, making investors disappointed. Because of this Hyundai is going crazy with cutting costs. Reuters reports that Hyundai's cost-cutting measures include reducing the number of business-class flights, annual trips for overseas workers to see family, and cutting back on fluorescent light bulbs. "We're trying to address a mismatch between the market trend and our product line-up. That's a longer term plan. For now we're trying to save every penny," said a source. The Tuscon will grow as well but will not get a major change in its mission. Hyundai will also be introducing a new B-segment crossover in 2018 to compete with the likes of the Honda HR-V, Jeep Re…

The Hyundai Santa Cruz has been a source of wonder - will they put into production or not? For the longest time, Hyundai's U.S. office say they wanted to do it, but it was the home office that had to make the final call. It seems we have a final decision. “We have made the decision. We have not made the announcement,” said Dave Zuchowski, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America to Motor Trend. That decision is a yes. Zuchowski said they are busy at work on a production version. The Santa Cruz's design went in for a review earlier this month and they are close to finalizing it. Collaborations between automakers and tech companies are becoming commonplace as self-driving vehicles and a sharing economy are starting to enter the limelight. Doing either one of these alone is difficult and it appears one automaker is realizing this. Bloomberg reports that Hyundai is in talks with Google about a possible partnership. Both Hyundai and Kia are lagging far behind when it comes to this. It doesn't hurt that former Hyundai USA CEO, John Krafcik heads up Google's auto…

Late this year will see the launch of two new EVs, the Chevrolet Bolt and Hyundai Ioniq EV. The Bolt is the big story as it will offer a 200 mile range. The Ioniq EV will only have an 110 mile range. But that doesn't mean Hyundai isn't thinking about doing an electric vehicle with more range. Byung K. Ahn, director of Hyundai’s Eco-Vehicle Performance Development group says the Korean automaker is planning to launch a 200 mile EV in 2018, and then a 250 mile EV two years later. It would be easy to think that Hyundai will just improve the Ioniq EV to reach these ranges, but Ahn said it wouldn't the Ioniq. For a vehicle to have a range of 200 miles or more, it requires …

After launching a number of teasers and doing a slow drip of information, Hyundai has finally revealed the Ioniq to the South Korean marketplace. If you're wondering about the name, it is a mashup of "ion" and "unique". The Ioniq's exterior is largely diticated on aerodynamic effiency. The shape is very familar to the likes of the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. But Hyundai says the design gives the Ioniq e a drag coefficient of just 0.24. Now the big thing with the Ioniq is that is capable of having a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains thanks to a new platform specifically built for this purpose. Hyundai is considering whether or not to do a line of premium SUVs using the underpinnings of the Genesis. Reuters has learned from sources the company is considering a proposal made internally to build SUVs using the Genesis platform as way to elevate Hyundai's overall brand image and crack the high-margin SUV market. But there is an air of caution at the company. Hyundai hasn't done so well when it comes to larger SUVs. Their previous attempt, the Veracruz, was introduced back in 2007. However, the company pulled the model out in 2013 due to poor sales. Meanwhile the company was still selling the Veracruz in South Korea, but will end production at the end of the nex…

Hyundai is pouring $1.8 billion by 2020 for a new offensive in commercial vehicles. This new offensive will include the U.S. getting some of these new vehicles. Since being exposed on a regular basis to Hyundai cars, something has come to light. The bumper covers are very thin plastic. Where the bumper cover attaches to the car there is a flange with holes that snap into a plastic bracket that is bolted to the fenders and quarter panels. The bumper cover comes to a point in that area... and an automatic car wash tends to grab hold of that point and break the bumper cover away from the car at the thin flange. It is a very common problem, I'm finding... including my cousin's Accent. I saw her over Xmas, and hers is broken. She thought she was responsible for hitting something, but I knew right away what happened. And they ca…

November 26th, 2013 Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com It is a couple of days before the Thanksgiving holiday here in the U.S. and most of the northern and eastern parts of the country are bracing for a major snow storm to hit. In spite of the pending holiday and the forecast of 4" of snow in Pittsburgh, it is still a work day for Hyundai engineers. A reader spotted this 2015 Hyundai Genesis stopping for a lunch break in downtown Pittsburgh on the same day Hyundai unveiled the details and pictures for the Korean marketplace. Based on the Hyundai HCD-14 Concept we saw in January at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai is wasting no time bringing this to …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 24, 2013 Hyundai unveiled a rendering of the new 2015 Genesis sedan today which features the company's Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language.. The new model gets a dramatically restyled front end that is similar to the HCD-14 Concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show this year. The low-set, vertical grille is sandwiched between a pair of headlights. The HCD-14's roofline has also been carried over to the Genesis. Inside, Hyundai says the Genesis will adopt its next generation of driver usability, including much better materials. Hyundai is keeping quiet on the powertrains, but does say all-wheel drive will become…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 24, 2013 Kia made a big splash with the GT Concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. With its distinctive coupe styling and a turbocharged 3.3L V6, the GT Concept got a lot of love. Now a new report from Auto Express says that the GT may have been given the greenlight. “We have plans to build a GT – we spoke about it at our global marketing conference in Singapore. We’ll be mainly targeting the end of 2016 or early 2017,” said Soon-Nam Lee, Kia’s vice-president of overseas marketing. Now Auto Express reports that the GT will carry the four-door coupe shape as seen on the concept, but will likely use front-wheel …

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 17, 2013 A fresh batch of spy photos of the 2015 Hyundai Genesis were released today and it looks like the new model will be carrying some of the cues seen on the HCD-14 Concept shown earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show. The most notable parts of the 2015 Genesis are the front and rear clips, which look almost like the clips on the HCD-14 Concept. The front features a large, square grille and rectangular LED headlights. The back end has a raked rear window and detailed LED taillights. Moving inside, the 2015 Genesis takes some ideas from the new 2014 Equus with a much cleaner center stack and a mix of a…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 21, 2013 Hyundai is giving us a sneak peak at a new concept that will be shown at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show. Called the HND-9, this concept could give us a preview of what the next Genesis coupe looks like. The sketches show the HND-9 pulling the dramatic card out with an Aston Martin-esq front end and large rear haunches. There is also a set of gullwing doors. Power comes from a direct-injection, turbocharged 3.3L V6 engine making 365 horsepower. That's mated to a eight-speed automatic and puts the power to the rear-wheels. We'll have more details when the HND-9 comes out next week. Source: Hyundai William …

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 14, 2013 Hyundai's showing for the 2013 Detroit Auto Show was a very unique concept named the HCD-14 Genesis. While the concept isn't quite the real deal, it gives us some clues of what to expect. The overall design is very much a classic concept car with a almost vertical front end, large grille, and rear-hinged doors. Aside from those dream features, the HCD-14 does feature some design cues that might end up on the next Genesis like hard-edged body creases running along the side of the car and the coupe-like roofline running all the way to the end of vehicle. Other features to take note are a heads-up displ…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 7, 2013 We're a week away from the start of the 2013 Detroit Auto Show and automakers are beginning to tease us with their showings. Today Hyundai has released a teaser shot of their HCD-14 Concept which the automaker says gives a "glimpse into future Hyundai premium vehicle design, advanced 3-D gesture-based technology controls, and spirited driving dynamics." The teaser shot shows a unique, sloping roofline that is very reminiscent of an Audi A7. We'll have more on the HCD-14 Concept next week. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 17, 2012 Last month, Hyundai and Kia announced they had overstated their claims for fuel economy on a number of 2011 to 2013 model year vehicles. Now, the starting point of this whole incident could be from a phone call by a vice-president of an American automaker. Automotive News reports that Margo Oge, retired head of the EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality got a phone call from a "credible" senior VP of a domestic automaker that accused the two Korean brands of ""cheating" to get inflated mpg numbers." Oge didn't divulge the VP or the automaker. Automotive News then contacted Chrysler, Ford, and G…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 8, 2012 With the news of Hyundai and Kia saying they have overstated fuel economy numbers on a certain number of models, the lawsuit have begun to come out of the woodwork. Earlier this week, a lawsuit was filled in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio against the two companies. The lawsuit seeks unspecified attorney fees along with damages for U.S. buyers or leasers of one of the 900,000 Hyundai or Kia models. The suit also asks the court to allow people who own or lease a Hyundai and Kia that live in the state of Ohio to back out of their agreements. Then yesterday, the two companies were hit…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 2, 2012 Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years or so, you have most likely seen the ads from Hyundai touting they sell more vehicles that get 40 MPG on the highway than any other automaker in the U.S. Well, those ads are done as Hyundai and Kia admitted to overstating the estimated fuel economy posted on window stickers of about 900,000 vehicles sold since late 2010. This announcement comes in part from an EPA investigation which couldn't replicate fuel mileages Hyundai and Kia had claimed on window stickers. The investigation found out that 41% of vehicles sold by the two automakers are…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 15, 2012 The Hyundai Genesis went through a mid-cycle refresh last year which brought forth a new 5.0L V8, R-Spec package, and other items. However, we've learned from Hyundai that 2013 will bring more changes to the Genesis sedan. Starting off with powertrains, the 4.6L Tau V8 which was the Genesis' only V8 engine until last year will be dropped. Also saying farewell is the standard 5.0L V8 model, meaning you want the V8, you'll need to step up to the R-Spec model. All other Genesis sedans will use the 3.8L V6. Hyundai is also upgrading the Genesis' interior tech by including its Blue Link suite of telematics se…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 17, 2012 Hyundai has a bit of a problem. Currently, the Korean automaker has 5% market share in the U.S., but their supply of vehicles is very constrained. How constrained? Using the traditional measure of dealer inventory in "days supply," Hyundai's supply is very very low. At the moment, Hyundai's average at 25-27 days, or less than one month's supply. The Azera stands at 12 days supply. To put this into perspective, out of a 1,000 vehicles sitting on U.S. dealer lots, 25 of those are Hyundais. “We know we will be short from a production point of view. We're definitely passing up sales," said John Krafcik, Hyund…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 20, 2012 During the press launch of the new Hyundai Elantra Coupe and GT, Hyundai North America CEO John Krafcik revealed that the company is considering performance versions of the Coupe and GT. Krafcik didn’t elaborate on details, but if given the green light, the Elantra Coupe and GT would get turbocharged engines (possibly from the Veloster), stiffer suspension, upgraded exhaust, and a tweaked interior.
