The 2024 Ford Mustang is possibly the last new V8 powered American car. While Ford is still moving firmly into the EV age, they are bringing out what is possibly the last new V8-powered American car with the 2024 Ford Mustang. The Mustang’s primary competition, the Challenger and Camaro, are likely going electric in the next iteration, while the Charger and 300C are the only sedans left with a V8 option under $90,000, and 2023 is their final model year. Recognizing that, Ford has made the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V8 more powerful than ever. Horsepower numbers weren’t released as of this writing, but Ford claims that it Coyote will be the most powerful naturally…

The coronavirus has caused a number of auto shows to either be pushed back (New York) or cancelled (Geneva). Add another show to the list as the Detroit Free Press is reporting tonight at the Detroit Auto Show has been cancelled. In a memo that was sent to sponsors today, organizers of the show said that the TCF Center (formally known as Cobo Hall) has been designated as field hospital by Federal Emergency Management Administration [FEMA] for the next six months. "The health and welfare of the citizens of Detroit and Michigan is paramount. TCF Center is the ideal location for this important function at this critical and unprecedented time,” NAIAS executive direc…

Subaru has been keeping their S-series of WRX STI vehicles in Japan since the first model (the S201) was launched in 2000. But today at the Detroit Auto Show, Subaru has decided to treat us by bringing over the S209 to the U.S. Under the hood, STI has overhauled the EJ25 2.5L turbocharged boxer-four engine with an HKS turbocharger, revised intake system, forged pistons and con rods, and less-restrictive exhaust. Output has increased 310 to 341 horsepower. Torque remains at 290 pound-feet. In a nod to the 2004 to 2007 STI, Subaru has fitted an intercooler water spray system controlled via steering wheel paddles to cool down the intercooler. A six-speed manual routes po…

Three years after Kia introduced the world to the Telluride concept, the Korean automaker introduced the production model at the Detroit Auto Show. Kia hasn't changed much in the Telluride's design. It retains the concept's boxy shape with an upright windshield, and stacked headlights. The interior is quite modern in its looks with a wide and flat dash, and brushed metal and matte-finished wood trim. A 10.25-inch touchscreen featuring the newest version of Kia's UVO infotainment system. There will be seating for up to eight passengers. Power is the same as you'll find in the sister Hyundai Palisade; a 3.8L V6 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. This is pa…

After numerous teasers and various leaks coming out, Toyota rolled the Mk.5 Supra this morning in Detroit. Bringing the Supra to life required Toyota to bring in a partner. In this case, that happened to be BMW. That begins under the hood as there is a 3.0 twin-scroll turbocharged inline-six with 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. This is paired solely to an eight-speed automatic that routes power to the rear-wheels. 0-60 mph takes 4.1 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph. No mention of the 2.0L turbo-four as we have reported previously - we don't know if that's off the table or will be announced at a later date. Work done to chassis wa…

Previous Page Next Page In the fall of 2020, Ford will be releasing the Mustang Shelby GT500 with a supercharged 5.2 liter V8 producing more than 700 horsepower. The handbuilt aluminum V8 features a lower center of gravity by inverting the intercooler into the valley of the engine V. A structural oil pan reduces vibrations and has active baffles to keep oil where it needs to be. All of that power is routed to a 7-speed TREMEC dual-clutch transmission capable of shifting in under 100 milliseconds. Drivetrain mass is further reduced by the use of a unique carbon fiber driveshaft. The chassis features active technology and revised s…

The LC Convertible concept was only the appetizer to what Lexus had for their main course at the Detroit Auto Show this morning. The 2020 RC-F and RC-F Track Edition are bringing some small improvements that will hopefully bring some big changes. Like the standard RC, the RC-F comes with an updated front and rear fascia, and new lighting. The 5.0L V8 engine gets a small bump in power to 472 horsepower and 396 pound-feet of torque (up five and six respectively). A new higher final drive ratio for the standard 8-speed automatic transmission and launch-control system drop 0-60 mph time to 4.2 seconds. That's nothing compared to the new Track Edition which drops 176 p…

Hyundai isn’t the first brand you think of being in the business of racing, at least in the U.S. Elsewhere in the World, the Korean automaker has been making its mark known in various series such as the World Rally Championship and the World Touring Car Championship with the likes of the i20 subcompact and i30 N. Soon, Hyundai will be taking on the U.S. Racing series with the introduction of the Veloster N TCR. The model was developed at Hyundai Motorsport Headquarters in Alzenau, Germany. Toyota was hoping to keep the Supra under wraps until Monday when it makes its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show. However, the Japanese automaker's Mexico office had a different idea. Yesterday, Toyota Mexico tweeted out a video showing the Supra without any camouflage. The tweet, translated from Spanish reads, “Our new #Supra arrived in Japan!, and this is the story that #AkioToyoda tells us about its return.” The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before a number of people downloaded the video and post it to Facebook and YouTube - we have the video at the bottom of this story. The production model looks very much like the concept we saw a few years bac…

Ram released some teaser images on its website yesterday giving us a preview of the 2500HD and 3500HD that are due to be unveiled on Monday at the Detroit Auto Show. The images look like they are primarily from the top zoot Limited model, but in any case, show an aggressive grille, an attractive set of multibeam headlamps, and a RamBox. They also released a video that gives you some other hints like a column mounted shifter and a large infotainment screen. The Detroit Auto Show is smaller this year compared to years past. This year is also the last year for the show in the winter. As we've reported before, the North American International Auto Show will move to June for the 2020 show, so no more mucking about in the snow in downtown Detroit for @William Maley and I. Here's a rundown of what we can expect to see for Detroit 2019. Cadillac - 2020 Cadillac XT6 The 2020 Cadillac XT6 will make its debut on Sunday, January 13th. We expect it will be based on the same chassis as the Buick Enclave and powered by the same 3.6 liter V6 and 9-speed automatic found in the XT5. We could get a surprise engine option avail…

Previous Page Next Page The RC F Track Edition won't have all of the spotlight to itself at Detroit next week. Lexus has revealed today the LC Convertible concept that will be rolling out on the auto show floor next week. Lexus is really stretching the definition of what it means to be a concept. To our eyes, the LC Convertible concept looks like it is ready to sit in the nearest Lexus showroom. Changes from the standard LC coupe include a slightly longer rear deck to house the power folding-top (we're thinking its a soft-top) and massive 22-inch alloy wheels. No mention of what's under the hood, but we're betting its the 5.0L V8 with…

The Ford Explorer is the all-time best-selling SUV in the US. So when Ford redesigned it the ground up, they made sure the 2020 Ford Explorer keeps a familiar face. Now on a new rear-wheel-drive platform that improves interior space and towing capacity, the Explorer broadens the already strong brand Ford has built over the years. Under the hood are one of two turbocharged engines. Offered on the Base, XLT, and Limited is a 2.3 liter Ecoboost 4-cylinder producing 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Standard on the Platinum is a 3.0 liter Ecoboost pumping out 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque when fed 93 Octane. The 2.3 liter comes in either rear-wheel dri…

Ford and Volkswagen have spent a fair amount of 2018 talking about a possible alliance. We know that publically, the two have signed a "Memorandum of Understanding" focusing on commercial vehicles. But numerous rumors have been flying about saying this alliance could go further, such as autonomous technologies and electric vehicles. Nothing has been made official, that could be changing next week. Reuters has learned from two sources that Ford and Volkswagen will be making the alliance official next Tuesday during the Detroit Auto Show. It is unclear what the announcement will entail, possibly talking about commercial vehicles or more. The overall goal of the allianc…

Subaru will be introducing a special edition of their hotted-up WRX STi next month at Detroit Auto Show called the S209. The company is keeping quiet on numerous details such as power figures and possible upgrades. But we can deduce some details by looking back at other S20(X) models. Back in 2000, Subaru introduced a limited-run Impreza STi called the S201 for Japan. Only 300 models were built and featured upgrades to the engine, suspension, and a wild body kit. Since then, Subaru has introduced a few more versions of the S20(X). The most recent was the S208 that used a turbocharged 2.0L boxer-four with 325 horsepower. Other changes included an adjustable Bilstein f…

When Jeep released the 2014 Cherokee, much of the automotive press panned its polarising appearance. However, the buying public disagreed and went on to buy 220k Jeep Cherokees in 2015, its second full year on sale. For 2019, Jeep is updating the Cherokee to soften those polarizing looks and bring some new refinements to the Cherokee brand. First up is the front facia; The headlight clusters have been moved higher, up and out of the bumper and into a more conventional location in the upper fenders. The pointy grille has also been softened into a more versatile piece. Around back, the liftgate has new contouring in contrast to the giant flat surface of the outg…

Toyota unveiled a redesigned Avalon today at the Detroit Auto Show. The previous-generation marked a turning point for the big sedan as Toyota added a bit more style and worked on improving the handling characteristics. The new model hopes to improve on both. The new Avalon is very polarizing in terms of its design, especially in the front with a large grille featuring slats or a mesh insert, and narrow headlights. The body features a number of creases and a coupe-like roofline. Overall, the new Avalon is larger - length grows by 0.7 inches, width by 0.8 inches, and the wheelbase by 2 inches. Some of the increase is due to Toyota moving the Avalon to their TGNA modula…

Has it really been eight years since Hyundai revealed the Veloster? According to our calculations, the answer is yes. So today at the Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai debut not one, but two Velosters. We'll begin with the regular Veloster. The basic shape hasn't really changed, it has only been refined. The cowl and A-Pillar have moved slightly back to make way for a longer front end. The new grille that made its debut on the Sonata is present here on the Veloster. The dual door layout on the passenger side is present as is the center-mounted exhaust. Moving inside, the Veloster gets a major overhaul with a new asymmetrical design for the dash. A 7-inch touchscreen is stand…

Mercedes-Benz has been releasing a surprising amount of information on the upcoming 2019 G-Class before its debut at the Detroit Auto Show. Last month, the German automaker dropped some information concerning the interior. This latest batch of information deals with the off-road capability, something that only a small number of G-Class owners will take advantage of. Mercedes says the 2019 G-Class will retain a ladder-type frame, three differential locks, and a low range ratio. The front features an independent suspension setup with double wishbones on the axle. The rear retains a solid axle with four longitudinal control arms on each side. Ground clearance is slightly…

2018 is a special year for Chevrolet as it marks 100 years of building pickup trucks. What better way to commemorate this anniversary than to introduce the next-generation Silverado. Chevrolet has already revealed one version of the Silverado last month at an event in Texas, the Trail Boss. The bowtie also revealed the new Silverado would be using a mix of materials such as steel and aluminum. Tonight at an event in Detroit, Chevrolet has spilled more details on the 2019 Silverado. Despite the truck growing in overall length (1.6 inches) and wheelbase (3.9 inches), Chevrolet says the new Silverado has a weight reduction of up to 450 pounds. Some of this comes down to …

Previous Page Next Page This year's edition of the Detroit Auto Show is all about the trucks as Chevrolet introduced a redesigned Silverado and Ford is bringing back the Ranger. This morning, Ram has completed the trifecta with the launch of the 2019 Ram 1500. As we first saw in a leaked photo a few days ago, the 2019 Ram loses the big-rig styling that has been part of its identity since the 1994 model. This is most evident on the front end where the crosshair grille goes bye-bye and is replaced by a new grille design with the "RAM" smack dab in the middle. The front fenders has been raised to give the front a more upright look. Depending…

While crossovers are beginning to take up more of Volkswagen's attention, the German automaker knows they have to keep their eye on their passenger cars. Around the world, that is Golf. But in North America, that honor falls to the Jetta sedan. On the eve of the Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the all-new 2019 Jetta. After weeks of teasing us, Infiniti has finally spilled the details on the Q Inspiration Concept today at the Detroit Auto Show. The best way we can describe the Q Inspiration is the Japanese automaker's take on the Porsche Panamera. It features the classic proportions of a coupe with a long front end, sloping roofline, and short rear deck. The front is quite busy with a "double-arch" grille finished in white. Move inside to see the very minimalist and clean interior layout. The seats look quite futuristic with white leather upholstery and orange accents. At first, we thought the Q Inspiration would feature an electric powertrain of some kind, due t…

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was hoping to a make a splash next Monday with the debut of 2019 Ram 1500 at the Detroit Auto Show. But someone spoiled the surprise. A user on Reddit posted a picture of a 2019 Ram 1500 inside a Fiat Chrysler plant - our hunch being the Warren, MI plant. The 3/4 shot gives us our best look at the truck and matches up with previous spy photos. The most apparent change that will sway your decision to liking to disliking the truck is the new grille. Ram appears to be doing away with the crosshair grille that has been a design trademark since the 1994 model. Instead, there is a smaller, octagonal grille with 'RAM' nestled in the middle. We…

Volkswagen has dropped some new sketches of the upcoming 2019 Jetta that will debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show. Compared to the current model, the redesigned Jetta looks to be more upscale. Back in August, we reported that Volkswagen was planning to send the Passat GT concept shown at the 2016 LA Auto Show into production. The concept was Volkswagen's attempt at making the Passat become a bit more exciting with numerous cosmetic changes, a VR6 engine, and slight tweaks to the suspension. Next week at the Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen will show off the production model. The exterior of the Passat GT matches up with the concept as there are a blacked-out honeycomb grille, red accent striping, blacked-out trim, 19-inch wheels, and a black decklid spoiler. Only four colors will be available on the GT; Pure White, Reflex Silver, Platinum Grey, and Deep Black.…

Yesterday, we told you about a teaser dropped by Ford for a new ST model. We had a number of guesses ranging from the Focus to the Explorer. Earlier this morning, Ford has revealed the mysterious ST model is the 2019 Edge ST. Taking the place of the Edge Sport, the ST retains the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 but gets a slight power boost - 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque vs. 315 hp and 350 pound-feet found in the Sport. This will come hooked up to a new eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Ford isn't revealing performance specs, but we're assuming it will slightly quicker to 60 mph than the Sport - hitting 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. The Edge ST also comes with a re…

The Honda Insight has never really made any inroads when it comes to dedicated hybrid vehicles. But the Japanese automaker is hoping the mantra of 'third time is the charm' will work out with the 2019 Insight debuting next week at the Detroit Auto Show. The Insight will slot between the Civic and Accord in Honda's lineup. Unlike previous Insights, the 2019 model is more conventional in its design. The front end has a lot of influence from the Accord with a large grille opening and narrow headlights. The side profile mimics the Civic sedan with a sloping roofline and similar glass area. Inside, Honda is promising the Insight will have best-in-class passenger volume…

Ahead of the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Jeep released images of the refreshed 2019 Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. By far the largest change is the face which now more closely resembles the Jeep Grand Cherokee and new Jeep Compass. The front light clusters have been merged into a single unit and are no longer low in the bumper with turn signal "brows" in a separate cluster. The rear hatch is no longer a giant flat slab, gaining more contouring and updated tail light clusters. Interior of the Cherokee looks to be a carry over. Jeep hasn't released any information on powertrain. The current Jeep Cherokee is powered by eit…

Many of us thought that Ford's showing at the Detroit Auto Show would be the upcoming Ranger. But it seems the blue oval has other plans. First up, Ford is teasing a new ST model. In a video dropped on various social media outlets, the former Stig, Ben Collins is seen walking past various performance models including the GT and Raptor. He then stops at a mysterious ST model. Guesses about the new ST range from the new Focus ST to possibly a crossover - the EcoSport and Edge being prime contenders. But that's not all. Automotive News has learned that Ford will be debuting a new version of Mustang Bullitt. Rumors about this have been going around since last year w…

Mini will be using next week's Detroit Auto Show to debut refreshed versions of the Cooper Hardtop and Convertible models. At first glance, the changes don't seem apparent as the new models look like the current ones. But you'll need to get a bit closer to see the changes. Up front, the 2019 Coopers feature a new headlight design and updated logo. Around back, Mini has fitted a new set of LED taillights with a Union Jack pattern. The interior sees some minor changes with Bluetooth and a 6.5-inch infotainment screen becoming standard. An 8.8-inch system with navigation is available as an option. The U.S. will miss out on one change that Mini is making for the Coope…

Mercedes-Benz has decided their largest SUV, the GLS-Class isn't fancy enough. That's why at the Detroit Auto Show next week, the German automaker will introduce the 2018 GLS Grand Edition. Most of the changes for the Grand Edition are inside with Porcelain and Espresso Brown Nappa leather on the seats and dash, open-pore wood trim, velour floor mats, and ambient lighting. Outside, the GLS Grand Edition comes with LED headlights, 'Grand Edition' badging and different wheels - 20-inches for the GLS 450 and 21-inches for the GLS 550. Mercedes is keeping mum on the pricing for the Grand Edition models, but said it will arrive at dealers towards the middle of this yea…

Just a few weeks ago, Infiniti dropped a teaser for their showing at the Detroit Auto Show. We didn't know much aside from the deep-cut in the hood and a different grille design. Today, Infiniti dropped another picture and some more information on their concept. The Q Inspiration looks to be Infiniti's take on the Audi A7 and Porsche Panamera with a sloping roofline and hatchback shape for the rear. Fenders are flat slabs of metal and there is a large vent behind the front wheel. "We aim to take traditional sedan architecture to its next stage of evolution. The Q Inspiration offers an alternative form; something more flowing in appearance and muscula…

BMW released the details and pictures of the 2018 BMW X2 back in October, but the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit is where the official world debut will happen. The 2018 BMW X2 (officially named X2 xDrive28i) is a sportier take on the company's existing X1 crossover. Unlike the X3/X4 and X5/X6 pairs, the X2 does not get a more coupe-like profile, keeping things more upright like a standard crossover. Ostensibly, this is to keep headroom usable on an already snug vehicle, overall however, the X2 roof is 2.8 inches lower and 3.2 inches shorter than the X1. The X2 is powered by an updated version of BMW's 228 horsepower 2.0 liter 4-cylinde…

Acura dropped both a teaser photo and video of the 2019 Acura RDX Prototype. The RDX is an important vehicle for Acura as its the second-best selling model for the brand - the larger MDX is the best selling model. The teaser image doesn't reveal much about the RDX Prototype's design aside from a distinct character line running along the doors and rear fender and a lowered roofline. The video, on the other hand, gives us some more clues. The front loses the beak grille and will transition to the shield grille that debut on the Precision concept back in 2016. Inside, the RDX Prototype features an infotainment screen jutting out from the top of the dash and what l…

Updated: 3:10 pm est with additional pictures Honda released a teaser image today, ahead of the 2018 North American International Auto Show, of a prototype of the forthcoming Honda Insight. This will mark the third time Honda uses the Insight name. The original Insight was the first hybrid offered in the US. A small two-seater, the Insight never caught hold. The second time around, Honda went for a Prius-shaped compact hatchback and the CR-Z sporty hatchback hybrid, still customers stayed away. The new teaser image reveals little, beyond the new Insight's shape. The prototype shares a profile now more closely related to the Civic sedan, though perhaps …

Hyundai's big showing for the Detroit Auto Show next month will be the redesigned 2019 Veloster. Thanks to a spy photographer, we have gotten our first look at it without the camo. The pictures were captured during a shoot for a commercial or a video that might be shown during the unveiling. Despite the blurriness of the pictures, we can make out a number of details. For one, this looks to be the high-performance 'Turbo' model due to large, round, center exhaust tips and faux diffuser. The front end features a smaller mesh grille and aggressive bumper with deep cuts. One report says the roofline is lowered, though we can't really see that in the pictures. We're…

Infiniti will debut a new concept car at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Today the company released a teaser image of the coming concept sedan. Unlike most teaser images that show a silhouette or just a glowing headlight, Infiniti opted for a white car on a white background. This allows us to see a little bit more detail. The current Infiniti signature grille appears to be gone, replaced with a deep sulking one with a finely finned intake somewhat reminiscent of the front turbine on a jet engine. Inside rests a prominent and very three dimensional Infiniti logo. Behind that are deep cut-lines in the hood that flow back into…

Full-size family sedans have been on the ropes lately. The Hyundai Azera has been canceled. There is no planned replacement for the Ford Taurus. The Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 both have uncertain futures. Toyota however is about to put a pile of chips on the table with a fully redesigned 2019 Toyota Avalon. They released a teaser picture ahead of the January 15th release at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The picture, which only shows the front left corner of the car shows a very expressive look with a broad lower intake and a somewhat Lexus shaped grille. We expect the new Avalon to ride on a longer variant of the 2018 Toyota Camr…

Mercedes-Benz released a preview of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class due to be released at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The images, all of the interior, show a significantly updated G-Class with an interior now at the level customers expect from Mercedes-Benz. Critics of the current G-Class point out the severely outdated build quality of the current model that does not fit its high price tag. The new G-Class gets the double-wide 12.3 inch displays found on other Mercedes-Benz models like the S-Class and E-Class. New steering wheel controls respond to finger gestures similar in operation to the screen of a smartphone. Much of the r…

The current Chevrolet Traverse has been with us for nine years and it was time for a replacement. This morning at the Detroit Auto Show, Chevrolet introduced the 2018 Traverse. The new Traverse's shape carries the spirit of the last-generation GMC Acadia. The shape is boxier with both the front and rear being squared-off. Chevrolet's new dual grille design and narrow headlights are present. In terms of size, the Traverse has grown with overall length measuring 204.3 inches long, riding on a 120.9-inch wheelbase. This makes it slightly bigger than a Chevrolet Tahoe (203.9 inches long, 116-inch overall wheelbase). Despite the increase in size, Chevrolet was able …

It seems that rumor was true. The Nissan Qashqai will be coming to the U.S. later this year, but under a different name, the Rogue Sport. The Rogue Sport boasts the same shape and design cues as the larger such as the V-shape grille. We'll admit we find the Sport much better looking than the Rogue thanks to the smaller size - more than a foot shorter. The wheelbase is 2.5-inches shorter than the Rogue. Power will come from a 2.0L four-cylinder - the same engine found in the Sentra. Power figures 141 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. Like most Nissans, the Rogue Sport will come with a CVT. Front-wheel drive comes standard and all-wheel drive will be on the o…

The GMC Terrain has become one of the most important models for the brand. It is the second-best selling model - one of out six models sold is a Terrain. How do you a second act while trying to retain it as one of the best-selling models? Tonight at an event before the Detroit Auto Show, GMC gave the answer. GMC used the template of the Acadia crossover when designing the Terrain. But GMC also added some unique touches as well. The most apparent is the floating roofline that has been used on the Nissan Murano. There is also a large hexagonal grille and c-shaped head and taillights. Like the Chevrolet Equinox revealed last year, the Terrain has gone down in size. It is…

Almost three decades ago at the Detroit Auto Show, Toyota shocked the establishment with the introduction of Lexus and LS 400 flagship. Lexus hopes with the 2018 LS introduced this morning in Detroit is able to recapture some of that shock. The look of the 2018 LS is familiar and somehow different. The profile is the similar to the current LS, but Lexus made a number of changes to make it stand out. There is a more aggressive take on the spindle grille, a crease running along the doors, lower ride height, and larger wheels. The new GA-L platform that made it's debut last year on the LC coupe underpins the LS. It has been stretched and widened to provide measurements o…

For 40 years, the Ford F-Series has not only been the best-selling pickup in the U.S., but also the best-selling vehicle. In 2016, Ford moved 820,000 F-Series models. Ford wants to keep this going and tomorrow will introduce a heavily refreshed version of the F-150. The big news is the introduction of a 3.0L PowerStroke turbodiesel V6, something we have been reporting on for the past year. The V6 is a result of a joint-venture between Ford and PSA Peugeot Citroën, along with being used in some of Land Rover's models. Ford is being tight-lipped on the power figures, but we should note the engine produces 254 horsepower and 440 pound-feet in Range Rover Td6. A 10-speed …

It has been no secret that Ford is planning to bring back the Ranger and Bronco - thank you UAW. But Ford has been mum on it, saying no comment and the like when asked about it. But they have finally come clean today. During their press conference this morning at the Detroit Auto Show, Ford announced that the Ranger and Bronco will be coming. “We’ve heard our customers loud and clear. They want a new generation of vehicles that are incredibly capable yet fun to drive. Ranger is for truck buyers who want an affordable, functional, rugged and maneuverable pickup that’s Built Ford Tough. On the spectrum of concept vehicles, we have models that are wildly out there and have no chance of going into production. Then we have models that are thinly disguised production vehicles. The Infiniti QX50 Concept falls into the latter. An evolution of the QX Inspiration concept, the QX50 doesn't really differ a lot in terms of exterior design. The front end is similar to the Q60 Coupe with a large grille and chiseled bumper. The side profile shows a bit of sculpting and a creasing running underneath the window. The interior looks mostly production ready with high-quality leather, wood trim, and what looks to be a new infotainment system. The QX5…

The Toyota Camry isn't what you would call exciting. Bland and boring, yes. But the Japanese automaker hopes to change that perception with the introduction of the 2018 Camry. Toyota allowed their designers to go somewhat crazy with the Camry and it shows. There is a bit of Prius and C-HR in the design of the new Camry with a more aggressive nose, lower hood and beltline; and a very short rear deck. Moving inside, Toyota has revamped the design of the dashboard to make it more flowing. Seats have been resculpted to provide better comfort. The Camry is the latest model to use Toyota's TNGA platform which the company describes as “a structural reform movement for th…

Honda's codeword for the 2018 Odyssey is consistency. Debuting today at the Detroit Auto Show, the 2018 model may not look all that different from the current model aside from a new front grille, more distinctive character line, creases along the side, and an updated rear end. But there are some clever ideas Honda has fitted into the Odyssey. First are the Magic Slide seats in the second-row. When you remove the middle seat in the second row, you can slide the outer two seats together thanks to lateral tracks. This also allows for easier access in to the third row. The seats can also tumble and fold, but not into the floor. Other ideas include, CabinWatch: An in…

Nissan says the Vmotion 2.0 concept revealed today at the Detroit Auto Show previews the future of their sedan designs. We hope so since the Maxima is the only good looking model out of their current sedan crop. The V-Motion grille that we have grown accustomed to on a number of Nissan models has been enlarged to up most of the space on the front end. There are deeply recessed bumper vents and steeply raked headlights on either side. Around the side, sharp character lines, deep cuts in the doors, and the floating roof that Nissan has been using on some of their vehicles. The concept rides on an 112.2-inch wheelbase (2.9-inches longer than the wheelbase on the A…

As we accurately judged a few weeks back, Volkswagen's concept for the Detroit Auto Show is another Microbus. But don't call it that, instead call it the I.D. Buzz. Volkswagen is clear in their press release that the I.D. Buzz "is not a retro design on 22-inch wheels." We're not fully sure on that because it looks like Microbus with the large Volkswagen emblem up front, two-tone paint, and a large area of glass. The only point you can give Volkswagen about it not being a 'retro design' is the front end not being so blunt. The interior can seat up to eight people and there are some nice details such as a wooden floor and LED ambient lighting. Technology features includ…

Audi is the latest automaker to tease their reveal for Detroit Auto Show. This is the Q8 Concept which will be going into production in the next few years as the brand's flagship SUV. Up front is a large, octagonal grille and narrow headlights. The side profile features a coupelike roofline and bulging fenders. Audi says the design is reminiscent of the famed ur-quattro coupe from the 80's. We can see some of it in the side, but not in other areas. “With the Audi Q8 concept, we have created a new spearhead within our Q model line. Its design strongly evokes sportiness and prestige. We were a bit worried about Volkswagen's showing at Detroit was only going to be the long-wheelbase Tiguan. But there is another vehicle that will be shown alongside. Volkswagen has released some teaser shots of the next I.D. concept and it looks like it will be a van - something akin to the Microbus judging from one of the pictures. The concept will be using Volkswagen's upcoming MEB (Modular Electric Drive) and use two electric motors - one up front and another in the back. This will provide all-wheel drive. This concept will also feature self-driving technology where a driver can press a button and steering wheel will retract. Various sensors, cameras, and las…

Next month, Volkswagen will be introducing the long-wheelbase Tiguan (Allspace in North America, Tiguan L in China) at the Detroit Auto Show. Thanks to a Spanish automotive site however, we have gotten our hands on leaked media photos of the model. The model shown in the pictures in the Chinese-market Tiguan L. There isn't much difference between the L and standard Tiguan aside from longer rear doors and flatter roofline. This year at the Detroit Auto Show saw Mercedes-Benz introduce the new E-Class sedan and this kicked off a year-long introduction of other E-Class variants such as the wagon and AMG models. Next year at Detroit, Mercedes will finish up the E-Class with the all-new coupe. The E-Class coupe follows the same design formula as the C and S-Class coupes. This means a diamond-shaped grille up front, a b-pillarless side profile, and an uncluttered rear end. Inside is the same as the E-Class sedan with two screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, uncluttered center stack, and seats wrapped in leather. Goodbye Town & Country, Hello Pacifica? No Chrysler isn't bringing back their crossover from the mid-oughts. That is the name of their new minivan which made its debut this morning at the Detroit Auto Show. In terms of design, the Pacifica is inspired by the 700C concept with a 200-esque front end and sloped windshield. Chrysler lowered the beltline and mounted the rear-view mirrors below it to increase the feeling of space. Wheel size goes up to 20-inches. The Pacifica is similar in size to the Town & Country - a tenth of an inch smaller in length, half an inch bigger in height, and an inch bigger in width. The interior borrows a lot from newer Chrysler m…

It was almost eight months ago when Lincoln rolled out the Continental concept at the New York Auto Show, and today at the Detroit Auto Show, the production Continental was revealed. In its transition from concept to production model, the Continental hasn't changed much. The front end still features a rectangular mesh grille, but there are different headlights and less chrome. The side profile shows off 'Continental' nameplates on the front doors, and the door handles are integrated into the beltline. The interior is mostly the same as the concept in terms of design. The front seats boast 30-way power-adjustments, while leather and a mix of aluminum wood trim line…

Back from a short hiatus, the Honda Ridgeline made its debut at the Detroit Auto Show this afternoon. Compared to the last Ridgeline, the new model looks more truck-ish. The front end boasts a more butch version of the Pilot's grille and larger headlights. The side profile is very Pilot aside from the top half of the rear cut off. The bed is slightly larger than the previous Ridgeline with measurements of five feet wide and five feet, four inches long. Yes, the in-bed trunk is still here complete with drain plug. Also, the tailgate can fold down or swing out. Power comes from a 3.5L V6 and is paired with a six-speed automatic. Oddly, Honda didn't give out any …

This year's Detroit Auto Show was somewhat down in terms of excitement. But considering last year's show was a 'once in a blue moon' event with a number of highly awaited vehicles and some surprises, 2016 was going to be somewhat a disappointment. Still, a number of automakers were willing to give it a shot and show off new models and concepts that would amaze all. It is time to see who is on the honor roll and who be heading to detention after the show. Acura Precision Concept: C Something I never thought I would say: I miss the shield grille. Also, were Acura's designers play too much F-Zero on the Super Nintendo. 2017 Audi A4/A4 Allroad: C+/B+ At first, I c…

At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this morning, GMC took the wraps off the 2017 GMC Acadia. The new Acada is being re-positioned in GMC's lineup as more of a mid-size model. For 2017, the Acadia sheds 700 lbs, drops 7.2 inches in length, and 6.4 inches in wheelbase. While it has lost some of its bulk, it will still offer up to 7 passenger seating with 5 passenger and 6 passenger configurations available. The top of the line Denali trim returns with its unique trim and wheel, and additional features like HID headlamps and a new continuous control dampening control suspension system. Joining the lineup is an All-Terrain model that adds additio…

At a preview event ahead of the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Buick brought out a svelte concept coupe called the Buick Avista. The concept is powered by a 400 horsepower 3.0 liter, twin-turbo V6 that sends power to the rear wheels. The engine features stop-start technology and GM's cylinder deactivation to improve fuel economy. This engine may sound familiar to you as it is one of the engines that will be available on the 2016 Cadillac CT6. No transmission is mentioned. In styling, Buick went with classic flowing lines and left the B-pillar, the post at the rear of the front door, at home. The overall effect is sleek and sexy. While …

Not sure if I am able to start a thread here mods, and because it appears that if you want a Ford thread started around here, one has to do it oneself...I took the liberty. Behold the yet to be challenged and bad-arsed 2017 Raptor, http://www.caranddriver.com/features/2017-ford-f-150-raptor-in-depth-feature

The theme of Lexus' press conference for the introduction of the LC 500 was 'New Chapter'. Phrases such as 'cars that fill the heart' were thrown around during the presentation done by Akio Toyoda today. Considering what the LC 500' intent is, it does mark something new. In terms of looks, LC 500 looks very similar to the LF-LC concept shown four years ago at Detroit. Yes, there is an imposing predator grille which will be likely sticking point for a number of people. But there are some other touches such as the fanged lights, intergrated door handles, and a rear end that makes a call back to the orignal SC from the 90's. The LC rides a new rear-drive platform tha…

Chevrolet sold different variations of the Cruze around the world, including a hatchback. But you couldn't get it here in the U.S., despite the number of other automakers who offered one. GM's Mark Reuss said in 2013 that it "was a pre-bankruptcy planning mistake.” But then we got some hope. Last year, we reported that Chevrolet showed a next-generation Cruze Hatchback to its dealers. It was expected that we would see it introduced a year later. Next week at the Detroit, we'll get our first look at the 2017 Cruze Hatchback. The overall look is a mashup of the new Cruze sedan and Opel/Vauxhall's Astra. The hatchback shape makes the Cruze more practical with 18.5 cu…

Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the 2017 E-Class tonight at an event before the start of Detroit Auto Show tomorrow. We've already given you the details on what it looks like inside and out thanks to a leak last week. Now we have more information to delve out. When the E-Class launches this summer, it will only be offered in the E300 trim. Power will come from a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder (Really Mercedes? E300 for a 2.0L? I digress. -WM) producing 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. A new nine-speed automatic routes the power to the rear-wheels. The power output seems a little underwhelming when you consider the size of the E-Class, but Mercedes h…

Detroit is turning out to be a somewhat busy show with introductions seemingly every moment. But alas, we (Drew and myself) can't be at all of the press conferences. So this will be a summary of the other vehicles we didn't get the chance to see when they were revealed. We'll be updating this as the day goes on. Audi had two big showings for Detroit. First was the North American introduction of A4. When it goes on sale in the spring, it will come with a turbocharged 2.0L with 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual clutch automatic routes power to either the front or all four wheels via the optional quattro system. Pricing starts at $38,250 wit…

You might be having a Deja vu moment when you see the Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active concept and think, didn't Volkswagen have something similar last year? Yes they did. Back at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the German automaker introduced the Tiguan GTE concept that used a 1.4L TSI and two electric motors to produce 221 horsepower. As you might have guessed, the Active means it's built for off-roading. Compared to the Tiguan GTE Concept, the Active has an additional 1.8 inches in ground clearance, and maximum ground clearance is bounced up from 7.9 to 9.6 inches. Approach and departure angles are improved as well: 25.6 to 26.1 degrees at the front and from 24.7 to 29.9 deg…

A few days ago we reported that the 2016 Buick Envision would be sold in All-Wheel drive format only. This was both true and false. After the reveal of the 2016 Buick Avista concept, I sat down with a Buick representative to discuss the Envision for a bit. It is true that the 2016 model year of the Buick Envision will only be available in all-wheel drive, 2.0T engines, and premium group packages. However, it will be a short model run. The 2017 updates will follow a few months after launch when an additional engine, front wheel drive, and additional packages will be made available. Even after those updates, the 2.0T will still only be available with all-wheel drive. …

Buick will be unveiling the 2016 Buick Envision on Sunday at a preview event before the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. One piece of information we dug up is on the drive configuration. According to the VIN card for 2017, the U.S. market Envision will only be available in All-Wheel Drive while we already know that Chinese market vehicles can be configured with just front-wheel drive. Knowing that VIN cards can change as products are finalized, I e-mailed a Buick rep to confirm. He got back to me quickly, confirming that yes, the Envision will be available in only two trim lines, Premium Group 1 and Premium Group 2, both only available in All-Wheel drive. Looking at other …

Mercedes Benz will be doing the full reveal of the 2017 Mercedes Benz E-Class on Monday, January 11th, however images of the car slipped out ahead of time. The exterior design of the new E-Class won't shock anyone as it now looks like a larger C-Class or smaller S-Class. The current E-Class is one of the oldest sedans in Mercedes' line-up and this move brings it up to date with the rest of the family look. Primary motive power is expected to come from a 2.0 liter turbo 4-cylinder and a twin-turbo V6. Alternative fuel minded customer will again have a diesel option this time with an all new 2.0 liter diesel while a plug-in hybrid will also join the line. AMG models are…

Looking like a cross between a Kia Soul and a Range Rover or Volvo XC90, Kia released a teaser for a surprise concept they will be showing next week at the Detroit Auto Show. This could signal Kia's return to the large SUV segment after the less than stellar sales of the 2009 - 2011 Kia Borrego. Kia says the concept will feature state of the art health and wellness technology and a new direction for Kia's design language. Little else has been released at this time. The Kia SUV concept will be officially unveiled at 2:15pm eastern time on January 11th. Stay tuned to CheersandGears.com for all of your 2016 Detroit Auto Show coverage View full article

Honda's showing for the upcoming Detroit Auto Show will be the 2017 Ridgeline pickup and today, the automaker released a teaser shot. Our first thought when we saw the picture was: Yep, that's a truck. Ok, maybe we are being somewhat snarky here. But it looks likes Honda is going for more of a truck shape than the previous Ridgeline. "Ridgeline will deliver everything you'd expect in a Honda from incredible packaging and fuel-efficiency to top safety technologies and innovative, segment-first features," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. We'll have more details when the Ridgeline debuts on January 11th. Sourc…

As we suspected earlier this week, Buick is bringing the Opel Cascada Convertible stateside to be sold as a Buick. Much of what we know of the Opel Cascada carries over to the Buick, with the primary difference being with powertrain selection. While the Europeans get 3 engine choices, we only get one. That's not entirely a bad thing in this case as the 1.4T gasoline and 2.0T diesel would not likely be suitable for most American convertible buyers' tastes. The engine we get in the US is a new to us 1.6 liter turbo-charged, direct injected 4-cylinder that produces 200 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque. This engine also features an overboost feature that will temporarily b…

Now to the big story of the Detroit Auto Show, the return of the Ford GT. The new GT is a mixture of the original GT40 and the 05-06 GT, while adding its own unique flavor to the mix. The front gets large air vents, a carbon-fiber front splitter, a massive air vent, and LED headlights. Around back are massive air ducts, two massive exhaust tips, an active spoiler, and the round taillights. The GT's interior is minimal in its layout with a flat-bottom steering wheel, a fully digital and customizable gauge cluster, and the new Sync 3 infotainment system. You can't move the seats due to seats being a key part of the carbon-fiber passenger, but Ford has made sure that the st…
