It didn't make an appearance at the Geneva Motor Show, but General Motors' white-hot Vauxhall Insignia VXR is spending more time out of doors and (accidentally?) posing for pictures for the folks at Auto Express. With 320 horsepower and a rumored all-wheel drivetrain at work, the fettled Insignia is said to have lapped the Nürburgring in (grains of salt at the ready) just over eight minutes on its 20-inch wheels. If true, that's the kind of time aimed for by smaller, nimbler cars. Even better: Pretty soon we expect to see pictures of the Insignia VXR hatch and wagon versions, perhaps wearing Opel badges. Mmmm, hot wagons... Yum. Autoblog Gallery

Even as carmakers around the world suffer amid the global economic downturn, some manufacturers are seeing record sales in Germany. Berlin's "scrapping bonus" is paying off. Bailout, of course, has already become the word of the year. And these days, with the global automobile industry sinking into crisis, it has been used more than ever. The European Union is looking at ways to help out carmakers in the bloc, Washington has spent weeks trying to shore up the Big Three, and even China has recently announced plans to streamline its automobile industry as part of a large stimulus package for vehicle manufacturers. Germans have been turning in old cars to be scrapped …

Link to Article After a day of worker protests across Europe at various General Motors plants, news comes today from Carl-Peter Foster (above), head of GM Europe, that Opel is planning to reorganize itself as a joint-stock company. GM would basically give up between 25-50 percent of its stake in the spun off company, with the hope that outside investors would make up the rest. The reorg would also likely include concessions by workers for lower pay as well as a restructuring plan to lower operating costs. The main obstacle to separating Opel from GM in the past has been the degree to which the two are intertwined, but a joint-stock company in which GM remains the lar…

Opel urgently needs money to prevent a cash crisis that could result in the total failure of its operations. The time frame is weeks. The cash-starved General Motors brand has appealed to governments in European nations where it has operations to supply emergency funding to bridge a €3.3 billion liquidity shortage. German Economy Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said today he will not be pressured into making a quick decision on granting state aid to struggling Opel. http://www.worldcarfans.com/9090302.005/op...y-from-collapse

GM: Opel spinoff won't end product partnership Dave Guilford Automotive News March 2, 2009 General Motors vows that its tightly knit product development partnership with Adam Opel AG will continue, despite GM's plans to sell a minority stake in the German automaker. "Opel remains an integral and important part of GM's global operations and will continue as such in the future," GM said in a statement Friday, Feb. 27. Teams in Germany have produced GM's global compact and mid-sized vehicle platforms. The Buick LaCrosse coming this summer is the first U.S. vehicle built on the new mid-sized platform. The Chevrolet Cruze, due in mid-2010, will be built on the c…

Thousands of workers employed by General Motors in Europe took to the streets Thursday to demonstrate against the giant US carmaker's sweeping restructuring plans and to save their jobs. The protests came as GM's German offshoot Opel prepared to unveil a rescue plan for the German operations and the government in Berlin stepped up its criticism of the US-based auto group amid a deepening crisis in the global car industry. Linkity Sketches of Opel Ampera Leaked Europe's Office for Harmonization of the Internal Market Becomes Discordant Europe's Office for Harmonization of the Internal Market (OHIM) maintains a trademark database that helps to ensure a minimum of conflict and easy filing for claims. That same database also lets slip basic sketches of car designs before their official unveiling on a regular basis, and this time the Opel Ampera plug-in hybrid gets its unofficial debut. The new Ampera is essentially Opel's version of the Chevrolet Volt and it is set to make its debut in production trim at next month's Geneva Motor Show. While the Volt will first hit…

I've been preaching this for months now, as Moses said to Pharaoh, "Let my People go". Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp. said it’s determined to keep its Opel unit, Europe’s third-biggest carmaker, even as politicians clamor for a spinoff from the U.S. company to safeguard 55,000 jobs in the region. GM would contemplate selling a stake in the division or allowing it to seek a partner, but still regards it as the company’s “core business in Europe,” regional president Carl-Peter Forster said in a statement today. Detroit-based GM said it aims to cut $1.2 billion from European labor costs and is considering options that include plant closures. European sol…

The new Opel Astra's true window line is visible for the first time, as are the rear lights and the real shape of the rear window. Until now we've only seen heavily disguised Opel Astras on test. This leaked image was on the World Car Fans website today. This would make a nice premium compact hatch for either Pontiac or Buick. I didn't really see Buick selling an upscale hatchback, but this design has changed my mind (although Buick would still need a sedan version also). It seems to have a more upscale exterior appearance than the current Astra. Link: Visit My Website Source: World Car Fans

November 22, 2008: 09:46 AM EST NEW YORK (AFP)--General Motors Corp. (GM) will neither fire workers nor close or sell factories at its German Opel unit, the president of GM Europe said in an interview to be published Sunday. Opel has sought loan guarantees from the German government "but it is not bankrupt," Carl-Peter Forster told the Welt am Sonntag Sunday newspaper. "Closures, sales of factories or job cuts are not on the agenda," he said. The regional parliament in the German state of Hesse has voted unanimously to provide Opel with up to EUR500 million in loan guarantees in the event that General Motors declared bankruptcy. GM has said it will run out of ca…

Amy Wilson Automotive News October 3, 2008 - 11:30 am ET PARIS -- General Motors' second extended-range electric vehicle will be an Opel. Opel, GM's European brand, will sell its own version of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in just months after the Volt's promised on-sale date in late 2010, said Hans Demant, managing director of Opel. "Since fuel economy and the whole issue of ecological driving is as important in Europe as it is in North America, we made a decision that we're going to trail the North American Volt with an Opel version of that vehicle in the 2011 time frame," Demant said here. Though the Opel plug-in will share the Volt's powertrain, it will hav…

The teasers don't really reveal much, except that it appears that the next gen Astra will probably look sportier than the current model (which looks to be a trend the Opel division began with the Insignia and current Corsa). Why GM can't realize what a good match these next gen products would be for Pontiac is beyond me. The next gen products would have to be decontented somewhat to become Pontiacs (and GM needs to ensure that they're not outpowered by their Chevy platform mates), but not as much as they would need to be to become Saturns. It's time GM paired Opel with a division that has similar brand characteristics: edgy, sporty, and aspirational. The first time Opel w…

Link Apologies if its been already posted. Basically the article states that Holden will drop the Euro-sourced Astra and move to a Korean-sourced replacement in a two-tier line up. The range will be based on the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze (Chevy Cobalt/Chevrolet Lacetti replacement)/Daewoo Nubira. 1st tier will be a lower-range spec along the same lines as the current Viva (Daweoo Nubira/Chevrolet Lacetti), 2nd tier will be further up-sec, different suspension and drivetrains and will be similar to what Holden has done with the Holden Captiva/ Captiva MaXX (Opel Antara). Holden has local input in the design process as well. Fingers crossed this is speculation but …

The folks at AutoWeek.nl decided to take the wind out of Opel's sails by posting images of the new Insignia before it released official information later this week. We've seen the basic shape and several details of the Insignia when Opel sent out "official" spy shots of their new D-segment player (think Mondeo, Passat), but these newest pictures tell the whole tale, sans artful camouflage. Due to hit dealers in Europe this October, the Insignia will replace the Vectra and come equipped with a handful of diesel- and gasoline-powered engines, ranging in displacement from 1.6- to 2.8-liters. Both 1.6-liter and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engines will be equipped in the entry …

From Auto Express: The powerhouse Vauxhall VXR8 is about to get even faster – and this time, it has the storming V10-engined Audi RS6 firmly in its sights. The Luton brand is currently finalising plans to offer a new 7.0-litre version of its supercar-chasing saloon, which will be based on the Australian Holden HSV unveiled at last month’s Melbourne Motor Show. And the British bruiser is expected to be badged the W427 when it arrives in UK dealers in September, carrying a price tag of around £55,000. Although neither Holden nor Vauxhall has revealed a power output for the new machine, unconfirmed reports from Australia claim the engine – which is borrowed from the la…

SPY SHOTS! 2009/10 Vauxhall Insignia Link to Original Article @ CAROnline The Vauxhall Insignia, you say? I thought it was the new Vectra They're one and the same, we hear. Eager to spruce up its repmobile's reputation, Vauxhall and sister firm Opel are planning to drop the Vectra tag in favour of the Insignia name, harking back to the executive-style concept from a few years back. It seems that the family car segment is finally throwing off its dull-as-ditchwater reputation, with the arrival of the classier Mondeo and the like. Concept car looks you say? S…

But the thunder from down under hasn't stopped yet – in fact it's only going to get louder. Vauxhall has announced the arrival of a new Aussie musclecar – the VXR8 – and it's more powerful and exciting than even the legendary Monaro. The dramatic-looking …

New Opel Corsa GSi: Powerful Performance and Subtle Sportiness * 150 PS turbo gasoline engine available for three and five-door models * Legendary GSi concept receives a modern update Rüsselsheim — The theme of the new Opel Corsa GSi is ‘more substance than show’. In contrast to the Opel Corsa OPC, which was launched a few months ago, the new GSi radiates subtle sportiness rather than uncompromising high-performance, and will be unveiled at the Barcelona Motor Show (June 7–17, 2007). The GSi's powerful 1.6 ECOTEC turbo engine produces 110 kW/150 PS at 5000 rpm, positioning the new sporty model between the Corsa Sport 1.7 CDTI (125 PS) and the high-performance C…

This is precisely what designers and engineers had in mind when developing the latest generation Opel Agila. The result is a stylish urban car which is compact and maneuverable for tight parking spaces, yet boasts an interior that is spacious enough even for bulky sport and hobby gear. It also has enough seats to…

While trying to dust of some rust of my German, I came across this article from Auto Zeitung Magazine. I used google translator in the link, which is not the greatest translator as you can see , but gives a fair idea of what the magazine is talking about. Road Test Clicky (Translated) The cars tested were 1. Alfa Romeo Spider 3,2 JTS V6 24V 2. AUDI TT Roadster 3,2 quattro 3. BMW Z4 3.0si Roadster 4. Mercedes SLK 350 5. Nissan 350Z Roadster 6. OPEL GT (AKA SATURN SKY) 7. Porsche Boxster And no prizes for guessing that GT finished last. I was expecting it to at least trump the 350Z and the Alfa, but it was slaughtered. Their main complaints were: GT has the smal…

hello peoples, Wondering if anyone can give me some ideas on performance mods for a 2003 opel astra 2.2 Sri. Currently got a dual cat back remus setup. Thats all. Im wanting to change the air intake and maybe chip it. No sure wether powerchip "piggy back" their chip on mine or download their software on mine. Not sure wether the claimed 12% is really noticible or should i spend the $1000 AUS on something else. Does anyone think a POD is a way to go? If so what make. I know your thinking "there is no point to over mod its not the turbo", it hurts me too (every day). Any help would be greatly appriciated! Great forum too by the way. Respect from OZ.

Spyshots of a heavily disguised Agila reveal not a single inch of sheetmetal, but exposed headlights and the overall shape of the new model reveal a Panda rival that abandons the WagonR+'s boxy proportions for a morte wedge-shaped profile with a strong resemblance to the new Corsa. Like the Panda, however, the new Agila maximizes space with a tall, upright greenhouse and near-vertical tailgate. While GM Daewoo is working on a new microcar architecture, the new Agila remains a joint project with Suzuki, assembled by GM Manufacturing Poland with Opel powertrains but based on Suzuki's flexible A-segment platform shared with the Swift and SX4. Go to spyshots from Automedia/A…

What's the performance car badge to watch out for in 2007? That'll be VXR8. While Vauxhall is yet to officially announce the name of its new V8-powered sports model, Auto Express has learned that the firm's replacement for the Monaro coupé will be called the VXR8. The new model will be a modified version of the Australian Holden Commodore SS V saloon. The VXR8 will produce around 400bhp in entry-level form, with tuned variants offering even more power. On sale in the summer, the four-door is expected to cost from around £35,000. Original article: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpr...a_vauxhall.html

Auto Express first revealed the Luton firm's plans for a hi-tech Vectra replacement back in Issue 880, but now company sources have confirmed to us that when it unveils the new model in 2008, it will be called the Insignia. Speaking exclusively to Auto Express, Carl-Peter Forster, the European president of Vauxhall's parent firm General Motors, stressed: "We will change its name for the new car. "Vectra is too connected to the conservative current design. The new model will be sleek and more like a coupé to look at, but of course it will still be a family car." Vauxhall first used the Insignia name on a concept car seen three years ago. The sporty looking four-door fami…

Holden is making no secret about examining a diesel option for Commodore. The one sticking point, Holden insiders say, is the availability of suitable modern turbodiesel from within GM's 'network'. "We don't have anything firm on the plate," a Holden spokesperson told CarPoint Confidential. "GM has both small and large capacity diesels available but the missing part of the equation has been in the middle… We’re looking all around the world," he said. Development is reported progressing apace on new GM V6 and V8 turbodiesels in the USA. Aimed at the next generation of US-market pickups and SUVs, the engines are all-alloy OHC designs with a projected displacement (per cyl…
