Jetting around By Bob Lutz | GM Vice Chairman | Link to Original Post @ GM FastLane Blog Thursday night out at the Oakland County Airport I had the pleasure of helping Saab USA General Manager Steve Shannon introduce the Saab 9-7X Aero and 9-3 at the welcome reception of the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance. As you know, Saab was “born from jets,” so I flew my Aero L-39 ZO “Albatros,” a demilitarized Czech-built fighter jet once used by the Libyan Air Force, from Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti to Oakland County for the occasion. Then, to benefit Meadow Brook Hall, we auctioned off a ride in the jet. So I’ll be piloting Eastern Michigan University aviation student Phi…

Ok guys I need help. I was waiting for the Astra but I don't think I can make it that long. So I then started to consider the Lancer. Then I realized that the Saab 9-3 has 3-4K rebates and that I could get one for a great price. My boss’s mom works for GM and got her 9-3 convertible at a great price. I may be able to persuade her to help me in this measure but I just wanted to know if it was worth asking. Does anyone her know how much a base model Saab 9-3 is employee pricing? Thanks.

here is how id fix Saab.. 9-1.. this would be a hardtop coupe model derived from the kappa platform.. it would be a two seater.. this would be simular to the solstice but they would only share doors and the windshield with that car.. it would be built alongside the solstice and sky in wilmington del. 9-2.. current subaru based model would die after the 2007 model year.. 9-2.. this would be sold as a four door sedan and a 5 door wagon, in essence it would be a reskinned Chevrolet Cobalt, it would only share the underbody, windshield and roof with the cobalt sedan.. there would be no stripper model.. it would be built alongside the cobalt and G5 in Lordstown Ohio..…

Well, I bought a new 2006 SAAB 9-5 from my employer about half a year ago and I had it detailed in the shop today. I got out there to get my car and the paint was totally stripped from my hood logo! Now, I know all the workers back there and they would not do that on purpose so it was probably a defective logo. As I looked at some more SAAB's in the shop (the ones which are a year or 2 old), I noticed the same thing happening to all the logos. Yet, when I see the SAAB-Scania logos, they are as blue as can be. Has GM made these logos cheaper? To me if the logo paint peels off, then that's pretty bad advertisement (especially on a 6 month old car). By the way, other than th…

Saab 9-3 Convertible, Now Available with Sand DETROIT – The sand often times conjures memories of walks on the beach with the fresh sea air swirling in and out with the tide. With the availability of optional tan colored top, in place of the standard black or optional blue colors, Saab 9-3 customers are now able to reminisce year-round in this robust four-season convertible. Automobile mag is reporting that the next Epsilon platform will come in 2 versions. The base version will come with struts fore and aft and FWD only with a more premium version getting controle arms all around and opt AWD! This premium and more flexable next genoration Epsilon platform will be the bases for both the next 9-3 and 9-5 while the base strut suspended version will be used on the Chevy Malibu/Saturn Aura/Opel Vectra ect. With this HOPEFULLY being the case I wonder if the ZETA will be able to be as flexable as the next gen Epsilon in what type of suspension system it can use? finally some sort of picture for the 9-4x. "Spy photographers have captured the first pictures showing a test mule for the new Saab 9-4X. Designed from the ground up as a Saab — rather than a re-badging exercise — the 2009 9-4X is a collaboration between engineers in Rüsselsheim, Germany and designers in Trollhättan, Sweden." Spied: 2008 Saab 9-3 These two photos are the ones that give us the most insight into what we'll be looking at with the MY2008 Saab 9-3 range. I've got to say, the first impression is bloody striking and just magnificent. This is just the aggressive look the 9-3 needed. The latest incarnation of the 9-5 was a little divisive (to say the least!) but so far, every reaction to this image that I've read has been totally positive. The Aero-X influence is unmissable and beautifully applied to the car. Not only does the rounded pressing on the hood give the headlamps some aggressive eyebrows, it is also reminiscent of the old clamshell hoods of Saabs past (Vector 220 points o…

So we all know that a redesigned 9-5 and 9-3 are on their way until the end of the decade, and it seems some sort of crossover will be part of their lineup as well. What about models smaller than the 9-3? Personally, I'd like to see two models: a 9-2 based on a future Opel Astra and a 9-1 destined to be a MINI competitor. It seems both audi and Alfa ave approved models to go against the MINI and I'd like to see Saab do something in that 'subcompact premium models' (not sure if the terminology is correct).

When GM aquired half of Saab (later to be all of Saab), their cars were still manufactured in Sweden. Currently, the 9-3 and the 9-5 are the only cars manufactured in Sweden. The NG 9-3 will be moved to the Opel plant in Germany and I assume that the 9-5 will be moved as well. With those two cars in Germany, and the 9-7x in America, what is Swedish about Saab? Is there anything at all? The only hope would be if the anticipated 9-4x and 9-1 would be built in Sweden. But the question remains: in the cars that are not manufactured at the Swedish plant, what is Swedish about them?

So I mentioned to a coworker the other day about the Saab 9-3 Sportcombi and he was like "Ewww Saab? Don't think you want to get one of those". I read the other thread about the theory on poor quality ratings, but what's the real deal here? Have there been that many complaints and reliability issues with Saabs as of late? Especially enough to cause this sort of stigma? I would like to consider this for a purchase in another 6-12 months, but don't want to regret the purchase shortly thereafter. Which brings up another question...how well do Saabs retain their trade-in value?

I have recently been driving a pristine, '01 Saab 9-3 5door, which was recently acquired by my company. Fun, roomy and very practical (my 70lb. dog can fit in the rear hatch area)...I really like the car...everything works, except a burnt out headlamp. Not a big deal, right? Here's the issue: EVERY time you turn on the car, it's messanging center describes ALL of the car's current problems (low washer fuid, headlamp out)...in big, bold letters that sit there if you don't use the radio or manually clear them... So, as a consumer, you are reminded of flaws each time you sit in the car. Could this influence people filling out surveys? I think it could. My wife notices …

Meet Saab's '07 9-3 While the 9-3's exterior carries over largely unchanged, it's interior recieves a moderate facelift for the '07 model year. The initial interior image posted last month was met with almost universal disapproval here on C&G. Luckily, further examination of the below images reveals a much-less "GMified" interior than earlier photos suggested. The lower-dash no-longer resembles a Casio and that black-tie radio certainly isn't the one out of your Cobalt. Have a look for yourself (56k Warning). -------------------- Aero http://isaab.net/img/9-3/2007/001.jpg http://isaab.net/img/9-3/2007/002.jpg Vector http://isaab.net/img/9-3/2007/003.jpg …

411 on a Saab 9-1 With the 9-2X out of the picture after this model year, Saab is starting work on its replacement. The new car is called the 9-1 and is to be based off of the Delta platform which will underpin Saturn's Ion replacement. The 9-1 is set to be available in early 2009 and use design cues from the Aero-X Concept. Read "Future Saab 9-1: New A3 Fighter Rumored in the Pipeline" @ Edmunds

The Car Connection on the Saab 9-5 Very nice. I love the nip/tuck that Saab performed on the 2006 9-5's skin. I've never seen anything as menacing as the gouged-out eyes look with the chrome outline. They also performed surgery on the 9-5's interior, structure and powerplant. Is this enough to satisfy the critics of TCC? Read the 2006 Saab 9-5 Review @ The Car Connection

not sure how real this is, but it does look a fair amount like the Aero X concept, which is supposed to be the inspiration for the next 9-5. I think this is pretty hot, so go for it Saab.

Does anyone know when the next 9-3 debuts? I haven't heard anything about it, and I now that the 9-5 has been heavily refreshed I was wondering if the 9-3 would get the same treatment.

Good review, if they could just bring the whole Epsilon line up to this standard. The hope would be that buying in bulk whould allow them to lower the price on the nice, but more expensive components that go into the 9-3. http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A...UTO03/605130303

Ok sure, the SUV may just be a TrailBlazer underneath, and it may be alienating to loyalists...but c'mon...it looks friggin' cool. I like Saabs recent "Born from Jets" ad campaign, the music, and narrator go well. This just happens to rock cuz the jet transforms into the SUV. I'm sure we've all seen it, but here it is for anyone besides me who really liked it http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=83...aab+9-3&pl=true

Saab Plant May Get New Product STOCKHOLM -- General Motors' loss-making car brand Saab hopes to make a new compact model at its plant in Trollhattan, which last year lost a race to build the next generation of GM's mid-sized cars. The Swedish brand, which last year sold about 129,000 cars, mainly in Europe and North America, has run up hefty losses in recent years in a fiercely competitive market. Saab's Managing Director Jan-Ake Jonsson told Swedish news agency TT the new compact car would compete in the same segment as the BMW 3-series and Audi's A 3 and be made on a platform similar to that of the next generation of Opel Astra. Trollhattan last year lost the race f…

By JASON STEIN | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS GENEVA -- Saab and Opel are developing hybrid systems that will appear on a range of mainstream vehicles before 2010. Hans Demant, Opel's managing director, did not say which vehicle is best suited for Opel's first hybrid -- but a car with a gasoline-electric powertrain is not far off. "Before the end of the decade, you will see a hybrid application in an Opel," said Demant, during an interview at the Geneva auto show. Saab Managing Director Jan-Ake Jonsson said a hybrid will likely appear on the next generation of its 9-3 and 9-5 vehicles. "We are part of the development process," Jonsson said. "Eventually hybrids will be in Saab ve…

I dunno why but the other Aero X thread was locked, which sucks. So i wanted to make a thread to post some cool pics of the Aero X and some thoughts about it. I'm sure a lot of people have seen these already, but they're still sweet to look at. Check out that altimeter style speedo...it's sweet. This is what Saab should have, as like a halo car. I mean, it's the only car to really back up the "Born from Jets" slogan. It looks absolutely stunning. I'm sure they won't build it but you know...they could if they really wanted to. Granted, building it off the RWD Corvette platform goes against the FWD tradition of Saab...but you know I think building the Saabar…

Could BMW revive Saab in much the same way it has MINI? Perhaps the way to do it is hone down Saab to one line with a rich and unique personality and heritage. Saab's best days were with the 900 line. BMW could use a unique, practical line (4 doors) below its 1 series. A new 900 Turbo 4-cyl in four door hatchback, sportwagon and convertible could be made with MINI and BMW parts in the Trollhattan factory. Starting prices at $20,000 (just above the MINI). At this price there's a genuine market for people who can't afford a Bimmer but want one (even if it's front-drive which is OK - drive a MINI and you'll know what I mean). GM sells it to BMW for $1. Done. Of c…

Geneva Preview: More Details Uncovered on Saab Sports Concept Date posted: 02-03-2006 DETROIT — With the Geneva Motor Show less than a month away, Saab insiders have begun to leak additional details about the concept sports car that will be unveiled on March 1. Described as a two-passenger coupe about the size of the Aston Martin DB9, the Saab two-door — which may or may not revive the old Sonett badge — is said to be a pure concept. Contrary to widespread speculation, it is not based on any existing General Motors platform and, unfortunately for Saab aficionados, there appear to be no immediate plans for production. However, Saab executives say the concept is signif…

GM focusing on Saab revival, sales chief says LaNeve says 'Born from Jets' ad campaign addresses Saab's lack of identity Dee-Ann Durbin / AP Auto Writer ORLANDO, Fla.-- General Motors Corp.'s vice president of sales and marketing said a new ad campaign and fresh vehicles should help the company's luxury Saab brand. "We don't need Saab to do a lot of volume. We just need them to do better than they've done," Mark LaNeve said at a conference sponsored by J.D. Power and Associates. Saab has struggled since GM acquired it in 2000, and sales have been weak. The Swedish automaker posted a 1 percent sales increase in 2005, on par with the industry but down compared to compe…

Still Flowing Toward the Mainstream Saab aims for sport touring sedan experience with its new 9-3 lineup. Monday, February 6, 2006 By Frank Aukofer - Scripps Howard News Service Like a flamboyant circus acrobat relegated to a support role, Saab has lost some of its audience appeal. Sales of its sport sedans and wagons, the 9-3 and 9-5, have slipped. To bring back some of the luster, the Swedish company added a couple of new models, though they weren’t really Saabs. One is the 9-2, a reworked version of the Subaru WRX, and the other is the 9-7X SUV, based on the Chevrolet Trail Blazer. For 2006, it also has added the 9-3 SportKombi, a four-door station wagon version …

Reuters Automotive News / January 17, 2006 - 9:00 am FRANKFURT -- General Motors' premium brand Saab lost more than $300 million in 2005, a German newspaper reported on Tuesday, heaping pressure on GM given calls from investor Tracinda to sell Saab and other loss-making units. The Handelsblatt daily cited company sources saying Saab's loss widened from nearly $200 million in 2004, but a GM Europe spokesman said the company does not break out earnings for individual brands and would not comment further on earnings before its quarterly report on Jan. 26. The spokesman said Saab had its best ever fourth-quarter sales at the close of last year and its highest annual sales…

Did anyone see Autoline Detroit this past weekend? They had on Jay Spenchian, General Manager of Saab Cars USA. After I watched the show and heard what this guy had to say I thought about it for a split second and...Saab is doomed if they have people like this running the show. This guy is part of the reason Saab is not doing as well as it should be. He may be credited with turning around Cadillac, but I think somebody was holding his hand so he could color within the lines. David Welch of Business Week was one of the panelists asking questions. At one point he asked Jay a question and his reply had nothing to do with the questiion he asked. When they panned back to Mr…

For what is probably only the second time since General Motors Corp. acquired Saab Automobile, the Swedish brand will be profitable this year, says Jay G. Spenchian, general manager of Saab Cars U.S.A. Inc. Spenchian also says he has been assured by Fritz Henderson, president-GM Europe, that Saab is an important part of the company, and its product portfolio will be expanded, not terminated, as some reports suggest. The Saab chief says worldwide sales will total 140,000 units this year, including 42,000 in the U.S. That represents a 12% increase, including fleet sales, over 2004. Meanwhile, Spenchian says he did not learn about GM's divestiture of its Fuji He…

i had seen some pics and thought the new redesigned 2006 looked better and caught my eye more then the older 9-5. now i am not gonna lie, i am not a saab loyalist...i have never owned one and just as recently as the new 9-3 even became interested. maybe this is why Saab did what they did,--to bring in more then just the loyalists. anyway, on to the drive. upon approach the car is very low to the ground. the front end is very long and "beak-ish" if you will. the wheels look good but imo, need to be 18's. i beleive the 9-3 has 18s and the 9-5 is a bigger car and has a lot of gap to fill. the Pirreli tires are nice, but replacemet will be expensive. the grill…

I think it looks great, and not just for its age. It's funny how good designs grow on you. I initially thought the updates were pointless and backwords, but then I started to understand it from the designers' point of view, their intention and concept, and all of a sudden there's this epitome, "OH, so that's why they did it" moment. The question is whether or not the public will appreciate it. The styling might age better than an instant "OMFG thAts HOTTZZ!" design, but the car itself might die from poor sales.

Saab aims to raise its profile GM unit plans aggressive role in upscale car market By Brett Clanton / The Detroit News General Motors Corp.s upscale Saab brand wants to become a bigger player in the premium car market. Saab plans to expand its lineup by at least two more models, double its U.S. sales by decade's end and raise awareness of the brand through advertising, top Saab officials said Thursday. The aggressive strategy comes as GM takes a more active role in growing its long-neglected European luxury brand and tries to increase its presence in new vehicle categories and foreign markets amid slumping sales in North America. Date Posted 11-11-2005 TROY, Mich. — Saab USA general manager Jay Spenchian has told Inside Line that a new Saab sports car spun off the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky is "not in the plans." Earlier this year, Spenchian hinted that a new sports car was under consideration as "maybe one of our upcoming concepts." GM insiders had said a Saab derivative off the Solstice's Kappa platform was a possibility. The next Saab concept will be a 300-horsepower 9-5 BioPower sedan that will be powered by a 2.3-liter turbo engine and run on ethanol. It will be shown at the Los Angeles auto show and the Detroit auto show in January. Saab introduced a version o…
