The old SAAB 9-3 has risen from the dead! The platform, now owned by National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) is being used as the basis for a "new" electric vehicle. The 9-3EV has gone into production in Tianjin China in a factory that can assemble up to 50,000 units a year. Further manufacturing facilities are being set up in Trollhättan, Sweden and a new facility in Shanghai China. Back in January, Evergrande Groupe, an investor in Faraday Future, purchased a 51% stake in NEVS for $930 million. Evergrande is being tight lipped about the cars and no details have yet been released for range, power, battery size, or even On Sale dates. View full article

On Wednesday, NEVS AB announced that it has a new owner. Evergrande Group's subsidiary, Evergrande Health, the main investor in Faraday Future, has acquired 51% of the share of NEVS AB. NEVS bought the remnants of SAAB after Spyker, Saab's prior owner, went into bankruptcy. NEVS has been using Saab 9-3 bodies to build electric vehicles for China. They have manufacturing plants in Tianjin China and Trollhättan, Sweden with another under construction in Shanghai China. NEVS AB was founded in 2012 by Kai Johan Jiang when he bought the bankruptcy estate after Saab Automobile. Since then he has been the major owner of the company. Kai Johan Jiang will hold the rema…

October 10, 2013 Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com It is October 10th, a bit too early for Halloween, and yet here is a zombie starting to show signs of being undead. National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) has confirmed that they have most of the agreements in place with parts suppliers to restart production of the 9-3 in Trollhättan, Sweden within a few months. NEVS is focusing primarily on suppliers in or close to Sweden to allow for shorter lead times, lower cost, and to bring greater benefit to the local economy. NEVS Purchasing Manager, Per Svantesson says, "We have 400 supplier agreements in place with only a few dozen left to complete in the n…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 12, 2013 A U.S. District court judge has dismissed the $3 billion lawsuit filed by Spyker on behalf of Saab against General Motors last August. The suit alleged GM blocked the sale of Saab's assets to Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile Co and eliminate a potential rival in the growing Chinese market. "General Motors had a contractual right to approve or disapprove the proposed transaction. The court is going to grant the motion to dismiss the matter," said U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain during a hearing in Detroit. Judge Drain said GM acted legally in order to protect its intellectual property and that it…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 21, 2013 When an automaker passes on, we're left wondering what could have been. What was coming down the pipeline had the company stuck around? SaabsUnited has the pictures and story behind the next Saab were it still in business, the 9-3 dubbed 'Phoenix'. The new 9-3 was spearheaded by designer Jason Castriota. Castriota was the person behind the PhoeniX concept shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Castroita had a huge mission ahead of him with the design of the 9-3 as this excerpt shows. SaabsUnited notes in their story that Castriota and his team were limited by time and money. The agreement does not change the status of Saabs still under GM warranty coverage. Model year 2010 and and 2011 owners will be covered starting in 2013. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 6, 2012 Former Saab owner Spyker has filled a $3 billion lawsuit against General Motors for its actions of blocking the sale of Saab to Chinese automotive firm, Youngman Automotive. "This lawsuit seeks redress for the unlawful actions GM took to avoid competition with Saab Automobile in the Chinese market," Spyker said in a statement. "GM's actions had the direct and intended objective of driving Saab Automobile into bankruptcy, a result of GM's tortiously interfering with a transaction between Saab Automobile, Spyker and Chinese investor Youngman that would have permitted Saab Automobile to restructure and remai…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 28, 2012 Earlier this month, National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB (NEVS) bought up the assets of Saab, except for two key items; the name and logo of Saab. The Saab name and logo are under control of defense company Saab AB and truck maker Scania, and National Electric Vehicle Sweden has to ask for permission to use it. "Every use of the trademark had to be discussed. NEVS can't get hold of the Saab name until we've approved it. That is under discussion right now," Scania spokesman Hans-Ake Danielsson told Automotive News Europe this week. "We have to protect our good name and brand. We have to be sure the new owner…

G. Noble Editor/Reporter CheersandGears.com Tuesday, 21st February, 2011 No doubt about it, the drama surrounding the bankruptcy of Saab almost seems scripted enough to be fit for daytime television at times. The latest news to come out of Trollhättan is no exception, now that the Swedish automaker is looking for a new suitor. According to a recent post on Saabs United, Saab's bankruptcy administrators have 6 to 7 bidders interested in purchasing the company and that each bidder is serious about building new Saabs. Among Saab's new suitors in particular is a European automaker which, according to Saabs United's rather patulous sources, "is German and located in Munic…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 18, 2012 The Saab story is only getting worse and worse. Last week, Saab reportedly sent 100 new vehicles to the crusher as part of the receivership process. The crushed cars include some pre-production 9-5 SportCombis and 9-4Xs. Reports say that Saab was able to save one of the 9-5 SportCombi for the Saab museum, which conflicts with reports of the Saab museum being closed and going into liquidation. The museum, which has a collection of 120 different Saab vehicles are now up for sale. According to BringATrailer, if you want your chance to get your hands on a piece of the museum, you have to submit a bid by J…

Well, one of Saab's biggest assets has been sold to Youngman. Youngman said yesterday, they had purchased Saab’s “Phoenix” vehicle architecture. Phoenix was a homegrown architecture that would begin underpinning new Saab vehicle, beginning with the new 9-3. The architecture is said not have any relation to any GM based architecture. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 30, 2011 Saab's bankruptcy is attracting a lot of companies wanting to buy up pieces of the Swedish automaker. Last week, we reported that Youngman Automotive got their hands on Saab's new Phoenix platform. Now, an Indian automaker wants a piece of the griffin. Bloomberg reports that Mahindra & Mahindra, an Indian SUV manufacturer, is looking into buying up pieces of Saab. Two people familiar with the situation say the company is trying to set up meetings with the two court-appointed administrators who are overseeing Saab’s bankruptcy. With Saab heading into bankruptcy, companies are coming in to snap up pieces of the brand. Hans Bergqvist, the administrator in charge of liquidating Saab told Swedish publication NyTeknik that many companies are interested in Saab's assets. Berggvist did confirmed that one of the companies interested is Youngman Automotive. This should come as no surprise as the company tried to save Saab until the last minute and has invested tens of millions of euros to help pay for wages and taxes. A spokesman for the company said that it was primarily interested in the Phoenix platform that would have underpinned the next-generation 9-3 and possibly other technologies that didn't i…

December 19th, 2011 - Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com - It looks like the end is nigh for troubled Swedish automaker SAAB who filed for bankruptcy in Vänersborg, Sweden today. After receiving a number of life lines in the way of funding promises via various Chinese banks and auto manufacturers, the final life line by Youngman Automotive was cut when General Motors officially stated that they would not approve the deal. Just last week, the court appointed administrator for SAAB's voluntary reorganization, Guy Lofalk, quit giving SAAB another two weeks to finalize the deal with Youngman Automotive. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 14, 2011 Last time on the story of Saab; Guy Lofalk, the court-appointed administrator of Saab’s voluntary reorganization filed paperwork to end the reorganization and the Swedish courts would make decision this Friday. But like all other times, Saab has found a lifeline to keep them afloat. This time, Saab has found two. Lifeline #1 comes from Youngman Automotive who sent Saab 3.45 million Euros (about $5 million U.S. dollars) to cover immediate tax expenses this week. When we last checked in on Saab, they had announced a deal with Youngman automotive and a bank in China and were waiting on approval from GM and the Chinese. Well Saab might have just used it's last life. Yesterday, General Motors announced they wouldn't support the new agreement. "We have reviewed Saab's proposed changes regarding the sale of the company. Nothing in the proposal changes GM's position. We are unable to support the transaction," said GM spokesman Jim Cain. Saab seems to be the cat of the automotive industry with the number of lives it has. Last we heard from the Swedish company, the company was waiting on approval on a deal with Pang Da and Youngman. However, General Motors was concerned with the deal due to technologies used in Saab vehicles ending up in competitor hands. Now, a new deal to save Saab is in the works. Saab's parent company, Swedish Automotive is in talks with Youngman and a bank in China (possibly Bank of China). The plan according to SaabsUnited is to have Youngman hold 19.9%, the bank with 29.9%, and Swedish Automotive holding the rest. The plan is reportedly in GM's hands, awaiting approval before h…

The Saab Saga Continues: GM Threatens to Shelve 9-4x By "black-knight" C&G Editor/Reporter 8th November, 2011 If you've been following the story of Saab since GM cut its ties with the Swedish automaker then you'd know that things are not all well and good in Scandinavia. However, things may only continue to get worse. Then, not too long after that, those same Chinese autom…

First, Autocar is reporting the court-appointed administrator placed in charge of the company's reorganization affairs, Guy Lofalk has asked the Swedish court to terminate the automaker's reorganization process. Saab To Head Into Bankruptcy Today? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 11, 2011 Saab could be heading into bankruptcy today, if a report from Autocar is to be believed. According to the story, £60 million loan ($94M USD) from Chinese automaker Youngman Automotive is likely to be denied by the Chinese government. The reason why is due to the deal not having any intellectual property rights being acquired. Saab has been waiting on a £60 million loan from Youngman and an additional £210M ($328M) from Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile and PangDa Automotive to help pay off debts and workers. Jonsson was joined by Executive Director Vehicle Lines Anders Svensson and 9-4X Product Manager Mikael Jacobsson. The first vehicle - chassis number 00001 - an Ice Pearl metallic Aero model with a 2.8V6 turbo engine, is bound for a media test drive event in the United States before being shipped to …

A demonstration video of two Saab 9-5s crashed into each other at slight offset with each car going 60kph (about 40mph) for a 120kph (80mph) total impact speed. The passenger compartment remains incredibly intact and all four doors are still able to open after the impact.

SAAB Post Show Event Only about half of any major auto show actually takes place on the convention center floor. To get a closer look at the action journalists are usually invited to after show events. I attended one such even hosted by Saab to show off more of the new 2011 Saab 9-5. The Car: Before I get to any event details, let me talk about the car. The new 9-5 is simply stunning in person. It has a silhouette and roofline unlike anything else on the road today, yet it is instantly recognizable as a Saab. The interior feels at once retro 60's chic and ultra modern at the same time. While you can pick out the GM Epsilon II parts if you look closely, anyone u…

Spyker CEO Says GM Has Responded to New Bid for Saab By Ola Kinnander and Jeroen Molenaar Dec. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Spyker Cars NV Chief Executive Officer Victor Muller said General Motors Co. has responded to the Dutch sports-car maker’s revised bid for the Saab unit, days after the U.S. carmaker said it will shutter the brand. Saab would still seek a development loan from the European Investment Bank under the new offer, Muller, 50, said today in a telephone interview. The CEO declined to say whether Russian businessman Vladimir Antonov, the chairman and biggest investor in the Zeewolde, Netherlands-based sports-car maker, still has a role in the new bid. Gene…

By Mike Harrison Dec. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Spyker Cars NV today said it has submitted a renewed offer for General Motors Co.’s Saab unit. “An 11-point proposal had been submitted to GM, addressing each of the issues that arose during the due diligence process” which will “remove each of the obstacles that were standing in the way of a swift transaction,” Spyker Chief Executive Officer Victor R. Muller said in a statement. GM last week said it will shut the money-losing Saab unit after talks collapsed on a sale to Spyker, the second failure in less than a month to keep the 72-year-old Swedish brand alive. GM and Spyker decided there was “no point in carrying on” after …

The ignition was in the floor. It had a rear hatchback, not a trunk. The hood was hinged at the front, so it opened away from the windshield. And many of its owners — including Jerry Seinfeld’s character on his long-running sitcom — were intensely loyal. Auto enthusiasts across the country were dismayed by the news Friday that General Motors was planning to shut down Saab, the Swedish carmaker it bought two decades ago, after a deal to sell it fell apart. Even with its modest and steadily declining sales, Saab long stood out as a powerful brand in spite of itself. “It wasn’t designed to be a fashion statement,” said Ron Pinelli, president of Autodata, which tracks ind…

Saab to be wound down if buyer not found by end of December DETROIT – The GM Board of Directors has received expressions of interest in Saab since the conclusion of negotiations with Koenigsegg Group AB. The Board will evaluate potential bids between now and the end of December. At that time, we will determine whether a suitable arrangement for Saab exists. If not, we will begin an orderly wind down of the global Saab business at that time.

By JOHN D. STOLL And IAN EDMONDSON Officials with General Motors Co.'s Saab unit said the brand has received serious expressions of interest from potential buyers since Tuesday's collapse of a deal to sell the Swedish car maker to Koenigsegg Group AB. Saab Automobile AB officials are now racing to build a case for GM's board and its chief executive to keep Saab alive, a spokesman said. Saab has held talks since Tuesday with at least two U.S. investment firms, Wyoming-based Merbanco LLC. and Ira Rennert'sRenco Group Inc., according to several people familiar with the matter. At least one of those firms would be open to working with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding …

Koenigsegg Group AB Terminates Agreement For Purchase of Saab DETROIT -- General Motors confirmed today that the proposed sale of its Saab subsidiary to Koenigsegg Group AB was terminated at the discretion of the buyer. "We're obviously very disappointed with the decision to pull out of the Saab purchase," said GM President and CEO, Fritz Henderson. "Many have worked tirelessly over the past several months to create a sustainable plan for the future of Saab by selling the brand and its manufacturing interests to Koenigsegg Group AB. Given the sudden change in direction, we will take the next several days to assess the situation and will advise on the next steps…

By Niklas Magnusson and Ola Kinnander Nov. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Saab Automobile AB dealers in the U.S. are running out of new cars after the Swedish carmaker cut production to conserve cash and prepare for its first new model in seven years. “We have about 10 Saabs left, and they won’t last long,” said Ivan Goodwin, sales manager at Jim Ellis Saab in Atlanta. “It’s going to be a big problem, but there is nothing we can do about it.” Saab, which General Motors Co. is selling to an investor group led by Swedish sports-car maker Koenigsegg Automotive AB, has slowed assembly to retool its Swedish factory to build the new 9-5 sedan starting next year, spokesman Eric Geers sa…

Unstable atom Jun 18th 2009 From The Economist print edition Does the troubled Swedish firm have a future? AFPKoenigsegg attempts fusion THE fact that bankrupt General Motors appears to have flogged three of its unwanted brands—Saturn to a car dealer, Hummer to a Chinese maker of heavy-duty trucks and now Saab to a tiny sports car company—lends substance to the idea that there’s one born every minute. The buyers may not be paying much, but at a time when the car industry should be consolidating rather than atomising, they are taking on an awful lot of risk. Of the three, only the fate of Saab will be of any concern to car lovers: Saturns were sold to people who wer…

[source: Motor Authority] GM ties with Saab will remain in future models The future of Saab is starting to look much brighter, thanks in part to important concessions from General Motors to help it build and design its own range of cars in the future, as well as a likely extension from Swedish courts for its restructuring deadline. For a while it looked as though Saab may go the same way as Pontiac, but its chief engineer is confident the brand will be able to survive without GM. The GM concession being referred to is the investment in the Saab brand over the past few years, which has led to the company today having the best equipment, tools and enginee…

Linkity Spy shots: 2010 Saab 9-4X up close Saab is close to completing development work on a new midsized crossover based around GM's Theta platform and expected to be revealed for the first time in production late this year for sale in early 2010. To spread development costs, most of the 9-4X's design has been shared with the 2010 Cadillac SRX and both vehicles are tipped to be manufactured at a plant in Ramos, Mexico. The 9-4X will be similar in size to BMW's X5 but pricing should be closer to that of the X3 and Volvo XC60 – two of the Saab crossover's prime targets. According to previous reports, the 9-4X will run a 284hp (209kW) petrol V6 engine mated to a si…

Linkity Saab 9-5 Upclose Heavily Camouflaged Mule Spotted The Saab 9-5 is long overdue for an overhaul, with the current model first hitting the streets as far back as 1997. A totally redesigned model was rumoured to make an appearance last year but its release was pushed back due to limited resources at Saab and the introduction of the facelifted 9-3. Saab's parent company General Motors has since confirmed that the car will now make its debut later this year along with the new 9-3X crossover. Underneath the heavy camouflage of this prototype for the new 9-5 is a heavily revised version of GM's FWD Epsilon II platform, which is also shared by Opel fo…

Over the last six months, the fate of Saab has become even more of a question than it has been for the last several years. General Motors put the marque up for strategic review last Fall and it was not listed among the company's core brands when it submitted its viability plan to the U.S. Congress in December. With many of its new model introductions being delayed this year, one has to wonder if Saab will just slowly slide off into oblivion. Given the seeming absence of anyone willing to step up and buy the Swedish automaker, that may yet happen. Before that time, though, Saab dealers in Europe will get at least two additions to their product lineup. The 9-3X and the re…

Link to Article In the interest of making its Saab brand more attractive for purchase, General Motors is reportedly looking at returning more autonomy to its Swedish subsidiary. As it stands now, Saab is basically a glorified Swedish imprint of the Opel record label. Indeed, a lot of engineering, and even construction, for Saab cars goes on in Russelsheim, Germany, Opel's home. The biggest development is that Saab would gain control over its own finances and decisions. Although GM would still be Saab's owner, the Swedish Patient would have its own budget (a figure that has yet to be determined). The idea behind the move is that giving Saab additional financial autonom…

Saab Celebrates 25 years of Convertibles with Special Edition The first ever Saab Convertible made its world debut at the Frankfurt auto show in the fall of 1983. Now, 25 years later, a Special Edition makes its American debut at the Los Angeles International auto show which opens to the public on November 22. This new version of the Saab 9-3 Convertible will be showcased in a unique bright champagne metallic color. Saab surprised the automotive world when it pioneered the concept of a ‘four season, four-seat’ soft top Convertible. Designed to be practical and stylish, the Scandinavian-styled convertible changed the perception of open top vehicles to be used all …

The midsized sedan has been growing in all directions for decades, but soaring fuel prices have customers begging for something smaller. GM is heeding the call as it is preparing a smaller batch of next generation Saabs. The next 9-3 was originally slated to be underpinned by the Epsilon II, but in March GM decided to instead utilize the lower-medium Delta architecture. The Delta platform will also be used for the next-gen Chevy Cruze, which is slated to eventually replace the Cobalt. The end result will be a smaller, lighter, more efficient Swedish sedan. With the 9-3 shrinking, Saab will also need to down-size its planned 9-1, which was originally scheduled to be Delt…

John Revill Automotive News Europe June 19, 2008 15:11 CET Production of the Saab 9-3 will remain in Sweden, a General Motors Europe spokesman said today. Media reports had suggested that production of the next-generation 9-3 would move to GM Europe's Opel plant in Ruesselsheim, near Frankfurt, Germany, from Saab's Trollhattan, Sweden, factory. To compensate for not getting the 9-3, GM Europe will add production of the Saab 9-5 and a compact car at Ruesselsheim. "It is good news that Ruesselsheim will get an extra model, a third shift and that the 9-3 production will remain in Saab's home country," said GM Europe spokesman Joerg Schrott. GM Europe has not…

The links are in Swedish (sorry), but Swedish Auto Motor & Sport reports that the NG Saab 9-3 can be delayed until 2012 and also that it might change its platform to DeltaII instead of sitting on EpsilonII. Given that the size stats on that LaCrosse mule spotted in Sweden (IIRC not that much longer than the Insignia), I'd expect the NG 9-5 to be around 4850mm in length. Why then have an EpsilonII 9-3 if you can use the DeltaII platform, which I assume is AWD compatible, to produce a NG 9-3 range consisting of Sedan/Wagon, but also with a family of 3-door and 5-door hatches, to return some quirkyness to Saab? For comparison purposes, Astras range from around 4.2m to …

Article CEO of GM's Saab sees stagnation in 2008 -magazine Sat Feb 9, 2008 12:06pm EST FRANKFURT, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Unprofitable Swedish carmaker Saab expects unit sales to stagnate this year, the head of Saab told Germany's auto, motor und sport magazine, which reported the General Motors (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) could turn profitable in 2010. Saab sold 125,000 units worldwide last year, less than the 133,00 it sold in the previous year, the magazine said on Saturday in an advanced abstract. "We expect roughly the same scale for 2008," Jan-Ake Jonsson told the German magazine. "It is our target to sell 150,000 to 200,000 units per year. But in order to …

The result is the 9-4X BioPower concept. Not surprisingly, Saab also uses a green theme by equipping the concept with an E85-burning, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Don't let the relatively small engine size deceive you because Saab employs its "rightsizing" techniques to extract 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from the engine. GM @ South Florida Auto Show SAAB 9-3 Convertible SAAB 9-3 Sport Sedan Check out the new SAAB fascias front and rear. The ‘ice block’ taillamps actually look rather nice in person (especially in softer colors like the blue convertible), but the real coup de grace is the incorporation of the CTS’ light pipes as DRLs in the front headlamps. The manner in which it flows with the upper grille lines makes it, dare I say, a more cohesive execution that in the Cadillac. It really looks awesome in person.
