If your into tech, then this will be of interest to you. Seems Microsoft is working on crazy fast SSD storage and the leak of such storage shows just how fast and big it is in an NVMe M.2 format, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB size with Read/Write speeds of 2,400 mb/s / 1,800 mb/s which is rapid fast. Think of it this way, while like the reading states, it is probably designed for Microsofts own cloud use, it is backed by Dell Technologies and this could find it's way into laptops. A laptop that could have crazy storage as the Precision Dell Laptops have three NVMe slots, which would make it a 12TB storage for a laptop using three of the 4TB NVMe units. Newly discovered Micr…

So my Note9 by Samsung, I accidentally swung around, it was in my coat pocket and hit something cause it was not zipped up and wack, cracked screen. Hit hard enough to crack through the safety screen and actually crack the real screen. So off to Verizon, and I got me a new Galaxy S22 Ultra that replaces the Note series of phones. Been a long time since I was on a note 9, 4 generations ago as I learned they had a Note 10, then Galaxy 20, 21 and now 22 series. Left the store, got home and the wife wanted to run some errands, so I drove her in the SS and thought, lets plug in my new phone to the Pioneer AVH-2500NEX Android Auto head unit. First, only a black s…

Rid yourself of the FEAR of being DEMONETIZATION by using the Brave Browser. Built on the open source code of the Chrome browser, this browser allows you to stay in control of where you go, default is no tracking allowed, blocking of pop ups, ads on the web site, etc. https://brave.com/bra036 I have it installed and have been using it all day when I check in on C&G site and have to say I am liking it! This is one of the easy to use built in tools to tell you how it has protected you so far.

Has anyone tried Opera browser recently? I have been for a few days after some frustrations with Chrome and I'm really liking it. One thing I notice is that it uses a lot fewer computer resources than either Chrome or Firefox because my computer's cooling fan no longer kicks on when I have 6+ tabs open.

Asus has released the first pictures of the 30th Anniversary Prime Motherboard. For those that like to build high end desktop system, this one should scream and destroy all those nasty decepticons. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/asus-announces-30th-anniversary-prime-x299-zenbook-13-zenfone-6,39527.html I have to say the Zen Phone 6 with it's 48mp camera that can go from back to front for the ultimate selfie is pretty cool too. I'm about to buy a new desktop and a new printer. I've had both for about 9 years. They are HP. The desktop lives on (crossing my fingers) but the printer recently gave up the ghost, after so many years of service. Two questions: 1. I am looking at the lower priced HP Pavilions with 12 GB of RAM. They can come with an Intel CPU (a little more money) or an AMD CPU (a little less money). Instinctively, I've gone for Intel in the past. My desktop computer tower use is for easy stuff. I read a few over my head articles that AMD's Ryzen 5 series CPU is now commendable and has edged up on Intel in the CPU department. I just went into a big box place and one of th…

https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2018/12/04/samsung-galaxy-s10-5g-release-date-price-cost-verizon-att-upgrade/#2e285b67573c One has to wonder if the story about internal employees selling the new foldable display tech to Chinese companies has forced Samsung to speed up the release of info about their new 10 series of phones. Four models, siz cameras, massive displays and gradient colour schemes with 5G as confirmed by Verizon and AT&T, new fold-able phone makes this coming 2019 CES show exciting. The galaxy X is very exciting indeed, if you have not seen the developers show where they showed a masked version of the phone as they wanted to…

Whether you agree or disagree, Forbes is saying that the data is showing an end to Apple as you know it. With Apples cheapest phone costing $1,149 today compared to when it debuted in 2007, the price you paid has soared over 700% in 12 years. 2002 was the last time Apple slashed forecasted earnings and the stock has been punished since then falling 35% since it's peak in November 2018. This erased $446 Billion in Shareholder value, the biggest wipe-out of wealth in a single stock ever since stock trading began. Per Forbes, since 2001 Apple has had steady revenue growth and by this measure the business seems perfectly healthy. Looking under the hood is a d…

Starting this thread to post weird tech news. Have to say that with all the news on security issues, one would think twice about buying stuff without knowing if it is secure or not, but nope, seems we have a whole new wave of tech toys that are as secure as one slurping ice cream at the store without paying for it yet. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/technology/this-iot-dildo-has-an-embedded-wifi-streaming-camera-and-laughable-security/ Who would have thought, but we now have WiFi streaming cameras with LED lights on Dildo's with Laughable security. So I was using a piece of junk phone - Samsung Nexus S model i9020 and now it is bricked. I have no idea why. Turning it on is fruitless, the screen does not turn on, and the phone gets hot - perhaps replacing the battery might be worth checking out just for the **** of it, and the saving me a whole lot of time and dough. Also tried the good ol' forced boot with power button and volume up. No go. So in the meantime, I am using in lieu of that an even more piece of junk phone - a flip job - (hehe he said "flip job") a Samsung C-414W. So some handy dandy notes to frame your suggestions to me - I don't really have a penchant need for using…

So I'm up for an upgrade in 4 days. My current Galaxy S4 performs mostly fine. I did get the lollipop upgrade a few weeks back. It does have a battery drain issue that seem to be an issue for all phones on Android 5.0.1... the likelyhood of getting to Android 5.1 is slim unless I go with a 3rd party rom. I don't need to be on the latest and greatest OS version, it's just that 5.1 seems to fix some of the battery issue. I only see 3 options if I upgrade Galaxy S6 Pros: Been a Samsung owner since the original Galaxy... had the S2 and now the S4... been generally happy with them. I don't see a thread for this anywhere, so if it's a dupe I apologize. I don't do XBox or Nintendo any more, but I'm on PSN as Necroscope7, EA Origin as NecroscopeVII (including Star Wars: The Old Republic), Blizzard as Necroscope7, Kongregate also Necroscope7, I'll have to update later with Steam because I'm blanking, but if you haven't noticed a pattern it should be some variation of Necroscope7. HP is exiting the hardware business, and its iPad competitor is a massive flop. Just over a month and a half after the 'Touchpad's' release, HP is ordering that retailers liquidate it. http://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-FB355UA-ABA/16662273 http://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-FB359UA-ABA/16662279 Some retailers online have yet to drop their prices. If you keep an eagle-eye out, and do your research, you should be able snag one. The device itself isn't that terrific and WebOS is no Android. But for $99, you're getting a pretty good deal. Naturally, there's potential warranty and support issues.

I went laptop shopping today and would have purchased a HP DM3-2010US but it had designs etched into it with swirls... I want a plain brushed aluminum laptop with decent specs and realistic price. It seems no one makes what I want. I don't really need a laptop as my field/personal dell d630 can handle anything(even has RS-232 port on it?) I have it pushed to the max as far as up grades go. I would love a Dell Adamo black 13 or Mac Air(I would not use osx on it though) but price is too high. I love the new dell Lat's and Precisions but my dell is just as capable. Is it me or has no one made a sexy laptop recently. I have a ancient "2001" Toshiba M3505 and it is awesome …

G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com In the news of the last 48hrs has been the story about the large hole in SSL or what is known as Secure Socket Layer. I don’t usually talk about network security around here, but this vulnerability almost certainly affects you. Whenever you buy anything online, most often, that transaction is encrypted using Secure Socket Layer (SSL). If you’re on a site such as Amazon, then you go to the shopping cart or checkout, at the top of the URL you’ll see http:// change to https://. That is generally an indicator that SSL encryption is protecting your credit card data. Turns out there has been …

I remember ~10 years ago talk of cpus being moved to add-on cards... so i was just thinking... IF, drivers get alot better- AMD has good GPU tech in their APU's and the next gen apus should have DDR4 support, ~65W tdp's and are SOC's what do you think of the idea being able to put several cards of an APU with ddr4 as crossfired gpus? the draw backs i'd see are 1.price 2.i doubt the main apu will have enough pcie lanes to support more than 1 or 2 of these unless ---- they could supplement each one added to move the data around.

I have what would be termed, in nerd-speak, a Paleolithic-aged computer I still use (in addition to my '10 iMac), a '99 PowerMac G3. Yes, it has but a 6GB HD, but it still does what I need it to, and I've CERTAINLY gotten my money's worth out of it. The planned obsolescence of the computer industry never projected this level of ROI. Issue :: the monitor is finally going. It's a Viewsonic G790 18". Within the last year, the picture started flickering down to blackness, then restarting- in the matter of about 5 secs. Now, apparently when it fully heats up, it flickers down to darkness & stays dark. Today I got about 20 minutes of 'on' time. Distressing (yea, I didn't…

http://www.fudzilla.com/processors/item/21512-bulldozer-to-come-close-to-core-i7 We have some good news for everyone who would like to see AMD make a big comeback in style. Since the time when Athlon used to be a high-end brand, and by that we mean the good old K8 core, it's been a while since AMD had a high end part capable of competing with Intel on a par. However, initial test scores that slipped to a hands of industry source are suggesting that Bulldozer should come really close to new Core i7 six-core CPUs. Bulldozer has both six and eight cores in the pipeline and they should be launching before the end of Q2 2011, at least that is the current schedule. The perf…

While listening to the features list for iOS5 and hearing people cheer. I came to start wondering what all the big fuss was about. A lot of what is being announce has been available on Android for a while now. My Android is an ancient by phone standards, HTC Hero that has been upgraded to version 2.1. This phone came standard with version 1.6. This is basically the 1965 Chevrolet Malibu 6-cylinder of Android phones. It's not flashy, not fast, but it starts up every morning and runs. This chart is just what I know from my experiences with my old phone. Newer phones with newer versions of Android (which is up to version 2.3 now) will have even more. BTW, my phone as been…

Has anyone bought anything from it? I've never purchased a game on steam before as I prefer to have the physical game in hand; however, the deals were just too good. I decided to pick up a few older games that I didn't have in my arsenal already. I got the full X-Com pack (5 games) and Civilization IV pack (4 games). The grand total was $16.08 after tax. I've put hundreds of hours into these games over the years, but have never actually owned them. IMHO, the original X-Com is the best game of all time, on any platform. With the "extender", the game runs flawlessly on Windows 7 64-bit even though its 16 years old. Steam is offering full publisher packs for really good dis…

Before I make an order online, I figured I'd just ask if a system builder around here has a flexible one that's about eight to ten centimeters lying around. Naturally, I'll pay shipping, which shouldn't be expensive at all.

Video: GT5 vs. Real Life, Nürburgring Edition by Jeff Glucker (RSS feed) on Dec 2nd 2010 at 8:01PM Denis Malevanyi is one skilled hot shoe and he can hustle a BMW M3 around the 'Ring with the best of them. He's also pretty good at driving virtual cars in simulation series like Race2Play, as well as in Gran Turismo 5. We've seen how a virtual driver's skill can translate when placed into reality, but Malevanyi already knows what he's doing behind the wheel. He recently captured video of himself running the Nürburgring in an E92 M3, both in reality and the digital world, and stacked the footage together. Hop the jump to see how he does in both versions. Thanks for the ti…

Steam Sale on what is a fun RPG/FPS that you can play Co-Op. The plot isn't that deep, but when you're vaporizing cannibalistic bandits online with friends, why care? http://store.steampowered.com/app/8980/

When your old Phenom 720 went on the fritz, what were the symptoms? I'm having big problems with my PC now, where it will all power up, but will not POST. The motherboard looks perfectly fine and I've cleared the CMOS several times and checked the RAM, so I'm wondering if I'm having CPU problems.

Dodgefan, and CaddyKing and myself are in on this game, and I was wondering if any other C&G'ers have a Steam account with TF2. If you do, post your SteamID, and next time we're ingame, we'll try and grab you. For those of you who don't have TF2, do yourself a favor, and check it out, because it's mad fun!

I'm not sure how long this will last, but Direct2Drive has Civ 4, and all it's expansions included for only 10 bucks. http://www.direct2drive.com/4/8042/product/Buy-Civilization-4:-The-Complete-Edition-Download The game's pretty cool, and you don't need a really powerful PC to play it. A couple of us have it.

http://www.physorg.com/news188458077.html A group of scientists from the University of Minnesota say that Fe16N2 crystals are more magnetic than the most magnetic material previously known, and its magnetism exceeds the predicted limit of magnetism for a material. hopefully it's easy to manufacture, maybe something that can be made in the USA? this will be great for many consumer goods.. like for audiophiles

My PC is sluggish. It was fast back in 2006. My question is this: Is it worth trying to build it up to today's standards or am I better off buying a new PC/Mac? And just for fun:

I just bought some new computer parts. It had been 1.5 years since my last substantial upgrade, which is too long. I only spent $390~ total and got a new CPU, MB, RAM, HDD, and case. Excellent deal I think. Cooler Master Elite Case Seagate Barracude 7200.12 500GB Hard Drive ASRock M3A785GXH/128M Motherboard A-DATA 2 x 2GB DDR3 Memory Kit AMD Phenom II X2 555 Processor The 7200.12 drive is a 500GB-per-platter drive, so it owns. I'm going to install Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on it, since I got hooked up through my college (free Microsoft software, yay). Based on several reviews I've read, the Phenom II X2 555 has a very good chance at being unlockable, since it is essenti…

Well the time has come to give my comp some major upgrades. Besides the additional 2 gigs of Ram (for a total of 4) and the GTX260, I haven't really done anything to upgrade it since I built it in `06. Pretty exciting, since I could see the test flight from my work. Unfortunately my camera is a POS: My town's claim to faim: the largest freestanding building in the world and Boeing. If you haven't heard about the 787 before, it is the first major airliner to use mostly composites for its construction, resulting in improved fuel economy and range. It has been delayed for nearly 2 years now, but just had its first successful test flight this morning (like 30 minutes ago).
