Look back to the year 2008. Fuel prices are at the point where customers are flocking to smaller and more economical cars. The automotive and financial worlds are in crisis. January 2008, Dodge debuted their new Ram 1500 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Michigan. That truck is still on sale and is now 16 years old. That fourth-generation truck, which was still a Dodge, is still available for sale. Ram doesn't have a configuration set up yet. There are two trim levels for the Ram 1500 Classic. A work-friendly Tradesman trim and a more robust Warlock trim. Tradesman 1500 Classics offers buyers a single-cab/lob box layout, along with Q…

Ram 1500s are getting many changes for the 2025 model year. Pricing for the base model is up by $855 compared to last year. A basic Tradesman with the 3.6-liter V6 starts at $42,270. The bigger news includes a fully loaded-trim level called Tungsten and an optional twin-turbo inline-six engine replacing the V8. Carried over into the 2025 is Ram's 3.6-liter V6 with a 48-volt eTorque hybrid system. You'll find this in the Tradesman, HFE, Lone Star, and Big Bend trim levels. The new "Hurricane" twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six costs an additional $2,695 and comes with 420 horsepower. This engine is standard on the $62,025 Laramie and $66,190 Rebel trim levels. If you op…

One of the frequent comments regarding battery-powered trucks is that their range is significantly diminished when towing. This is true with petroleum-powered trucks as well, of course, but the prevalence of standard gas stations removes range anxiety for those who fill up with dead dinos. Eventually, as high-speed EV chargers sprout up across the country, as Mercedes-Benz plans to help with by adding 400 charging stations nationwide, those concerns should be addressed. But that doesn’t help buyers who want a battery-powered truck today. RAM plans to help ease that range anxiety. Yesterday, RAM unveiled the RAM 1500 Revolution Concept at the 2023 Consumer Elect…

It is no secret that Ram wanted to give the Ford F-150 Raptor a challenge. Look back to TRX concept from 2016 with its off-road suspension and a de-tuned version of the supercharged 6.2L Hellcat V8. Fast-forward to today and Ram has introduced a production version of the TRX and let's just say they took it to the extreme. No De-Tuned Hellcat! Open the hood of the Ram 1500 TRX and you'll find the 6.2L Hellcat V8 producing 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. 0-60 mph takes a mouth-dropping 4.5 seconds and you'll be past the quarter mile in 12.9 seconds with an exit speed of 108 mph. Sure it isn't the full 707 horsepower, but Ram engineer's had to make some con…

Ram has announced the pricing on the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. The lowest priced model will be a Quad Cab 2wd Tradesman model, starting at $38,585 including destination charges. The EcoDiesel is a $4,995 option, making it about $3,000 more expensive than a V8 Hemi-eTorque. The EcoDiesel takes the crown as the half-ton diesel with the highest amount of torque, 480 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm, and highest towing capacity in the class at 12,560 lbs. Horsepower is rated at 260 at 3,600 rpm, an 8 percent increase over the previous version. Fuel economy ratings will be announced closer to release in Q4 this year. The new EcoDiesel will be available in all trims and configurations in…

The Ram Classic could live on indefinitely as long as it make business sense says FCA CEO Michael Manley. At an investors meeting, Manley suggested that it might even get an update. Ram recently introduced a new Warlock package on the 1500 Classic, indicating their willingness to invest in the aging platform. Ram currently doesn't have a mid-size offering in its stable, and without one on the horizon, the Ram 1500 Classic fills the niche of a lower priced truck. The base Tradesman model rings up at $29,340 and can be configured all the way up to a Big Horn with a 5.7 liter Hemi V8 at $46,240. That contrasts with the new Ram 1500 which starts at $35,135. One th…

After a brief hiatus, Ram is reintroducing the EcoDiesel for the 2020 Ram 1500 and in doing so, snatches away the torque crown held briefly by GM with their inline 6-cylinder diesel. The 3.0 L V6 Diesel in the 2020 Ram produces 480 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm, 20 more than the 460 in the GM Inline-6, while horsepower increases to 260 hp at 3,600 rpm, a bit lower than the GM's 277 hp and the Ford Powerstroke 250 hp. The EcoDiesel is a DOHC V6 and achieves these numbers with a new generation water-cooled variable geometry turbo charger, higher compression ratio, redesigned cylinder heads, lightweight aluminum alloy pistons, and a redesigned EGR system. The Ec…

RAM sees a Dakota-sized hole in their lineup and FCA CEO Mike Manley says he wants that hole filled fast. Part of the issue is that Ram currently does not have a platform to use for a mid-size pickup. The Jeep Gladiator, while considered a mid-size, has a different mission in life. It is positioned, and priced, as a premium product with an MSRP starting over $33,000 where competitors like the Ranger and Colorado start in the mid-$20k range. Furthermore, the new product will not be built on the Gladiator platform, further increasing costs and development time. The current estimate is that the Dakota, if that's what it is called, will be introduced in the 2022 time …

The Warlock features a Ram Rebel style grille, front and rear powder coated bumper, 1" factory lift, black wheel flairs, Warlock decals, and an available sport hood. Powering the Warlock will be either the 3.6 liter V6 or the 5.7 liter Hemi-V8. Both will feed power to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic. We noticed there was something missing in the press release of the 2019 Ram 2500 and 3500 HD trucks, a launch date. Sitting on the media room on Monday, both Drew and I found it a bit odd there was no mention of a launch window. Most automakers give a possible idea of when their upcoming vehicle will launch, but nothing from Ram Trucks. We may have the answer as to why. Bloomberg is reporting that the Ram 3500 HD is awaiting emissions certification from the EPA to be approved before it can go on sale. One problem; the U.S. government is currently shut down and leaves the 3500 HD certification, along with other vehicles in limbo. “I am concerned, very concerned, …

Earlier this year, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced that it would be moving production of the next-generation Ram HD trucks from Saltillo, Mexico to the Warren Truck Plant in Michigan. This was due to the U.S. Government threatening steep tariffs on Mexican-made vehicles. Saltillo would continue producing global commercial vehicles. But with a new Free Trade Agreement between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico; FCA is having second thoughts about moving production. CEO Mike Manley told Reuters that he wants Ram Trucks to move out of third place with truck sales. “We need to get ourselves into second” place. Frankly, I don’t care which of the two I take share from,”…

In the most recent five-year plan for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ram Trucks revealed that it planned to have a new midsize truck by 2022. Thanks to a new report from Automotive News, we have some tantalizing details. According to supplier sources, the new Ram truck will be built at FCA's Toledo, Ohio plant - home to the Wrangler and upcoming Wrangler pickup. Half of the plant has been shutdown since April for retooling to make way for the Wrangler pickup. The line regularly built more than 230,000 JK Wranglers per year before undergoing the retooling process. FCA is not expecting the Wrangler truck to sell in high numbers, leaving a fair amount of capacity ready for …

Ram Trucks is following in the footsteps of Jeep, Nissan, and Volkswagen by selling the previous-generation 1500 alongside the new model for the 2019 model year. Known as the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic, it will be offered in four different trims; Tradesman, Express, Big Horn/Lone Star, and SSV (Special Services Vehicle). Those wanting a Laramie, Rebel, or Limited will need to step up to the new truck. But Ram is still offering three cab options (Regular, Quad, and Crew) and bed lengths (5'7"; 6'4', and 8'). The 3.6L Pentastar V6 and 5.7L HEMI V8 will be available, while the 3.0L EcoDiesel is expected to arrive at a later date. There will be a choice of two-wheel or four-wh…

It is no secret Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has been dealing with a number of issues with the 2019 Ram 1500 launch. As we reported back in April, the Sterling Heights Assembly plant was only operating at 60 percent of where the company wants it to be due to various issues. FCA announced that it would be investing $300 million to try and get production back on track, along with extending the production schedule to six days a week and running though Independence Day and Labor day. But as Automotive News reports, there is a new issue that is likely driving customers away from the 2019 Ram 1500. Currently, the 1500 is only available with the 5.7L HEMI V8. The 3.6L V6 and …

It has been a rough start for the 2019 Ram 1500 production line. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne said on an earnings call last week that the Sterling Heights Assembly plant, home to the 2019 model is only operating at 60 percent of where the company wants it to be. Automotive News learned from sources at the FCA and suppliers that the plant was building around 1,000 trucks per day last week. "That's not where we need to be. We allowed enough time in 2017 to get that installation up, but it's proven to be challenging," said Marchionne. Why the low production rate? A union source explained there are a few reasons. One is that suppliers are having a difficult time with p…

In a couple of weeks, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will roll out the 2019 Ram 1500 at the Detroit Auto Show. Before this, a fresh stack of spy photos have made their way online revealing the front end. The biggest change is Ram dropping the oversize, rectangular grille that has been a key part of their trucks for a number of years. In its place is a hexagonal grille with a narrow bar and 'RAM' name. We're thinking this could be one of a range of different grille inserts for the truck. There are square headlights featuring some sort of LED lighting. The rest of the front looks to be an evolution of the current model. From a previous report, we're possibly expectin…

A few years ago, reports popped up about a patent filed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. It was a tailgate that could be folded down or split open into two swing-out halves. That patent has now become reality as a new set of spy photos reveals a next-generation Ram 1500 sporting one. Compared to the original patent filing which showed a 50/50 split, the one shown in the spy photos appears to be a 70/30 split. We're assuming this to allow Ram to use the same handle mechanism on this and a standard tailgate. The one item the spy photos don't tell us is how you open the split tailgate. There might be handle on the top of the tailgate, but we're speculating here. There…

After nearly a year-long hiatus, 2017 Ram 1500s with the EcoDiesel option are beginning to show up on dealer lots. According to Automotive News, some dealers started seeing EcoDiesel models arriving towards the end of last month. Other dealers are still waiting for the EcoDiesel models to show up. Back in January, the EPA accused Fiat Chrysler Automobiles of violating emission regulations by failing to disclose eight different software programs used in the EcoDiesel. The agency alleged the software allowed Ram 1500s and Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesels to produce excess pollution. Then in May, the Justice Department filed a civil suit against FCA over the software. …

The current Ram 1500 has been with us since 2009 and it is clear that it needs a major overhaul in light of the updated Ford F-150 and upcoming redesigns of GM's half-tons. We now have gotten our first look at the next-generation model - codenamed DT. Ram has gotten this mule fully covered up, but we can make out some key details. It looks like Ram is going evolutionary in terms of the 1500's design with the blunt shape and crosshair grille. The mule seen here is the Mega Cab variant with its larger rear doors. The spy shots given to Car and Driver also give us a good idea of what changes are taking place inside. It appears that Ram is getting the newest version…

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced today that it would be recalling a million Ram Trucks for a computer glitch that could prevent the airbags and seat-belt tensioners from engaging in the event of a crash. The issue comes from the software used in a module that controls the deployment of restraint systems in rollover situations. Underbody impacts could cause the module to think a sensor has failed and will disable the side airbags and seat-belt tensioners for that ignition cycle. This means in the event of a rollover, the key safety systems will not go into action. The good news is that if you turn the truck off and then on, the system should revert back to normal. Y…

At least for now, fuel economy regulations in the United States only look to get more stringent in the future, and automakers are coming up surprising methods to meet the upcoming standards. For example, check out these shots of this Ram 1500 while under development. That’s not a V8 or even a V6 under the hood. According to our spies, it’s a four-cylinder... The grainy images make clearly seeing the engine difficult, but the mill is definitely not something you’d usually see in a pickup Read More

2018 was going to be the year that Ram Trucks would introduce redesigned versions of their light and heavy-duty trucks using a new platform known as DT. But it seems the light-duty truck will be the only one riding on this new platform as the redesign for heavy-duty model has been pushed back. Sources tell Automotive News that Ram will be refreshing the current heavy-duty truck for 2018. It is unknown when Ram will actually introduce the redesigned version using the new platform. Why is Ram switching to a refresh of the current heavy-duty truck? It comes down to money. At the moment, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has nearly $7 billion in net debt at the end of thir…

December 1, 2016 — A Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel lawsuit has been filed in California alleging the EcoDiesel trucks and SUVs contain concealed emissions "defeat devices" to hide nitrogen oxide emissions levels 10 times above legal limits. The proposed class-action lawsuit targets about 150,000 model year 2014-2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel and 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel vehicles that allegedly cost $4,700 more than normal because of "clean" emissions technology. In addition to charges against Fiat Chrysler (FCA US), the EcoDiesel lawsuit claims parts manufacturer Bosch is in cahoots with Chrysler, in violation of the RICO (Racketeer Influenc…

Ram Trucks is planning to build the current Ram 1500 well into 2019, even after it launches a redesigned model in 2018. Sources tell Automotive News the decision comes down to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles making a play for fleet customers by offering a lower-priced model in the form of the last-generation 1500. This move also allows dealers to have ample supplies of trucks - both old and new. "Going into 2018, having more pickup capacity will allow us also to satisfy the fleet customers' demand on pickup, which we struggle to do today because we favor retail in the U.S. and Canadian volume, which have higher margins," said FCA CFO Richard Palmer on a conference cal…

It seems the Jeep Wagoneer wasn't the only vehicle that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was previewing for their dealers. Another set of leaked photos have come out possibly revealing the design of the next Ram 1500. Much like the Wagoneer pictures we reported on yesterday, the Ram 1500 pictures come from a poster labeled "Ram Brand Lit Signatures". The front end appears to be a bolder version of the current model with a larger vertical bar and Ram logo. Headlights appear to be slimmer and there is an off-color skid plate. The tailgate appears to be taking some ideas from the Ford F-150 with a rugged and sculpted look. Taillights appear to be the same as the current model.…

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is considering whether or not to do a large SUV. This model would take on the likes of the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon and Ford Expedition. Large SUVs are also big money makers. According to analysts, GM makes $10,000 or more on their large SUVs. "While crossovers are all anyone wants to talk about, the money is still in pickups and SUVs. FCA needs to enter this segment. FCA is chasing profit-driving vehicles and they are missing out on a major one, just as Ford is getting ready to launch an all-aluminum Expedition," said Dave Sullivan, an automotive analyst for Auto Pacific to the Detroit Free Press. Mike Manley, head of Jeep and Ram brand…

Sergio Marchionne isn't the only person who is interested in doing a midsize truck for Ram. Speaking with The Detroit News, Jeep and Ram Trucks' CEO Mike Manley says he sees an opportunity. “I think there’s opportunity there in the U.S. if you look at what’s happened in the mid-size segment here – significant growth last year. I think that space is big enough, certainly, to have two offerings there,” said Manley. One of the two offerings is the upcoming Jeep Wrangler pickup due next year. Manley said he doesn't believe there will be overlap in terms of buyers who want the Jeep or a possible Ram truck. Manley admitted that Ram could use a Fiat platform for a ne…

With the midsize truck market on the rebound, FCA is considering whether or not to do a midsize for Ram. “We’re looking into it. I have a keen interest in getting it done. The big question is whether it should be body on frame,” said Marchionne to reporters at the Geneva Motor Show. Previously, Ram was considering doing a midsize truck on a unibody platform. But this idea was tossed out due to problems with getting decent fuel economy and pricing the model at an affordable point while still making a profit. Marchionne says the biggest hurdle for a Ram midsize truck is trying to make a business case for it. When Marchionne looks at GM's midsize trucks - Chevrol…

Ram is putting serious thought into building a full-size SUV to take on the likes the Chevrolet Suburban, Ford Expedition, and GMC Yukon XL. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne expressed his interest during a call announcing the third-quarter financial results. The large SUV segment is “the near-exclusive use of some others. We have a reasonable chance of getting at least part of that market,” said Marchionne. Marchionne explained that Ram begins to redesign its pickup lineup and add production, space for such a vehicle begins to open up. “I think we have a unique opportunity with renewal of the pickup line, with the powertrains we selected, to…

If you thought the heavy-duty wars were done and over with, you thought wrong. Ram announced today that the 3500 Heavy Duty - a model with best-in-class tow ratings of 30,000 lbs when equipped with the 6.7L inline-six Cummins diesel engine - has upped the ante once again. The inline-six for the 2016 model year will now produce 385 horsepower and 900 pound-feet of torque. That's an increase of 35 pound-feet when compared to last-year's model. The increase in power also means increase in tow ratings - 31,210 pounds according to the SAE's J2807 certification process. To deal with the increase in tow weight, Ram beefed up the rear axle ring gear hardware from 12 to 16 bol…

You would think that with the introduction of the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Terrain and refreshed Toyota Tacoma, the likes of Ford and Ram would be getting in the midsize truck action. But Ram boss Bob Hegbloom can't make it work for the brand. The problem according to Automotive News is the price of higher fuel economy. Hegbloom explained that back in the heyday of midsize trucks - the 1980's - consumers bought them because they were considerably smaller, less expensive, and boasted impressive fuel economy. Although midsize trucks had less capability than their full-size compatriots, consumers didn't mind. "When you look at those four factors, that's truly what a midsize …

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has been widely lauded by the press for its impressive fuel economy. It has also become a big hit for the company. However, a number of owners are feeling a bit ill when driving their EcoDiesels. Detroit ABC news station WXYZ reported back in December that a number of Ram 1500 EcoDiesel owners are reporting feeling sick with a exhaust smell coming into the cabin. That smell happens to be diesel exhaust which causes headaches, lightheadedness, and dizzy-ness. Ram owner forums started reporting this issue in September and October, with a number of trucks being investigated by Chrysler and then being fixed with new exhaust coupling. At the time Chrysl…

Even though the Ram ProMaster City is hitting dealerships right now, there is already talk of expanding the lineup. Edmunds spoke with Joe Benson, head of Ram's commercial truck operations who hinted that more variations of the ProMaster City could be forthcoming if the demand is there. "When we learn more about our customer needs here, then we can go to that portfolio and bring in what we need, which includes the diesel engine, a short wheelbase, maybe a seven-passenger version. We have that flexibility in the future," said Benson. Other models up for consideration include a high-roof variant and a pickup variant with drop-down sides to access the cargo bed. Benson p…

Ram announced today that it plans to increase production of the EcoDiesel from 10 to 20 percent of the Ram 1500's total volume mix. “Innovation sometimes comes with risk, but being first to market with a diesel engine for the half-ton segment has shown to be a great decision for the Ram Brand. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is a game-changer in the industry, and has proved to be a key to conquest sales over our competitors,” said Bob Hegbloom, President and CEO of Ram Trucks. The EcoDiesel option has proved to be a massive success for Ram. The option has helped sales of Ram trucks climb 21 percent to 283,256 units through the month of August. The diesel option has also increase…

With new fuel economy regulations coming around the corner, many automakers are trying a number of things to meet those upcoming standards. Case in point: Ford is using aluminum in the next-generation F-150, and General Motors is reportedly doing the same for their next full-size truck. What about Ram Trucks? A new report says the brand will be sticking with steel for the time being. Reuters has learned from two sources that when Ram gives their truck a refresh in 2017, aluminum will not be in the picture. The earliest that Ram would add the material is after 2020 when the truck will be redesigned. This move could either hurt Ram if aluminum proves to be ticket for sale…

The past few years have seen truck manufacturers engage in a war of fuel economy numbers. Using new engines and fuel saving technologies, manufacturers are using fuel economy as a big selling point. Speaking with Automotive News, Ram brand director Bob Hegbloom says there is a big prize that all truck companies are aiming for: 30 MPG. "The first manufacturer that gets to 30 mpg wins," said Hegbloom. "We are seeing that with our 28 mpg EcoDiesel as well as the 25 mpg on the Pentastar V-6 model that fuel economy is so important. We are seeing it in the share gains and the growth for the brand. That's a number that is out there, but I don't think you can stop there." Hegb…

One of the more notable segments that has been seeing massive growth is the compact commercial van. What used to be a place where the Ford Transit Connect and Ram C/V Tradesman (AKA Dodge Caravan Cargo Van), has now become a battleground. There's the new Ford Transit Connect, the Nissan NV200/Chevrolet City Express twins, and now the 2015 Ram ProMaster City. The ProMaster City is the Fiat Doblo wearing some new clothes. The front end wears a large Ram grille and restyled headlights. Otherwise, the ProMaster City and Fiat Doblo are the same from the A-Pillar and back. Ram will offer the ProMaster City in one wheelbase (122.4 inches) and two different configurations; the T…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 2, 2013 We've been reporting for the past few years on Ram getting a version of the Fiat Doblo to compete with the likes of the Ford Transit Connect and Nissan NV200. Well today Ram has finally confirmed that a version of Doblo would be introduced into the U.S. sometime next year wearing the ProMaster City name. "The Ram ProMaster City further expands the Ram Commercial truck lineup, which includes everything from vans to pickups to Class Four and Five trucks. As Ram Commercial continues to gain share and grow sales in the market, we will be aggressive in our goal of expanding our commercial vehicle offerings," …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 23, 2013 Chrysler is taking the Ram 1500 Rumble Bee Concept out to dealer shows to gauge reception and find out from dealers if the concept should become a production model. "We will take it to some dealer shows and talk to dealers. We try to listen to the dealers. They know their marketplace," said Dave Sowers, Ram's head of marketing. "It is something that we could execute.” However if the Rumble Bee is given the green light, there will be a few items that will be left out. "Some of the things that we put on the truck weren't volume production possible for us. That flat yellow paint would be a little bit o…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 17, 2013 Let's go back in time to 2003, when Ram was still part of the Dodge family. It was around that time when a special model of the Ram was introduced. Called the Rumble Bee, this special Ram 1500 regular cab donned a yellow and black paint job and a number of touches to pay homage to the Rumble Bee cars of the sixties. Well Ram is doing it again. At the Woodward Dream Cruise today, Ram unveiled a concept version of the Rumble Bee. Starting with the lightest configuration of the Ram 1500 (regular cab with 2WD), Ram applies a Drone Yellow paint job with a matte finish, back accent strip with the Rumble Bee log…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 13, 2013 At one time, the term 'luxury pickup truck' was an oxymoron. But now, automakers are churning them out like they're not going out of style. Ford has three different luxury versions of the F-150 (King Ranch, Platinum, Limited), General Motors has the GMC Sierra Denali and Chevrolet Silverado High Country, and Ram has the Laramie Longhorn and Laramie Limted. However, Ram CEO Reid Bigland believes there is more room for a more posh truck. “I don’t even know where the ceiling is on the premium pickup truck,” Bigland said to reporters this week. For those wondering, the Ram Laramie Longhorn models start at $44,…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 24, 2013 The Ford Raptor doesn't have any competition. Okay, you could make the argument that the Ram Runner is the closest one. The difference between the two is that the Raptor is built on the production line, while the Ram Runner is built at a dealership after a buyer buys the modifications necessary. That could be an item of the past for Ram as Chrysler debates whether to offer it as a production model. “My boss would really like us to try to do a little more research on the Raptor and how it does (in the market),” said Pat Dougherty, the vice president of Mopar parts, sales and field operations. “If we cou…

Chrysler announced today that the 2014 Ram 1500 will come with the option of diesel V6 engine, making it the only light-duty pickup to come with a diesel in the marketplace. “Truck owners have been emphatically asking for it, and Ram will be the only manufacturer to offer a diesel powertrain in the half-ton segment with the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. Does it really annoy me? A little bit. When you realize how long our trucks have been Dodge Ram trucks, you can't expect the whole world (to figure it out.) William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 7, 2012 While GM has shelved their small diesel for their half-ton trucks, Ram looks to be soldiering on with their plans for a diesel 1500. Some new spy shots have caught a Ram 1500 single-cab with an odd thing. On this truck, the rear fender happens to be covered with soot, leading us to believe this happens to be a diesel 1500. Dodge's smaller pickup came out and was an instant hit with people who wanted something a little bigger than a "compact". With V6 and V8 engines, it straddled the market and found its niche. An MCE of the first-gen built the momentum, and with the second-gen truck, Dodge really hit its stride. I still see so many of the second-gen trucks around, especially the right-sized regular cab 4X4 with big tires. Then by the time the current-gen truck came around, they completely lost their mojo... amazing after the sweet second-gen. Boxy, thirsty and with a monolithically cheap interior and no regular cab, buyers dried up almost immediately, and with good reason. And next up…

According to a report from the all-Mopar-knowing minds at Allpar.com, Chrysler's dealer computer system is showing new entries for a diesel-powered Ram 1500 in regular and Quad Cab configurations. Spy Shots: 2011 Ram 1500 Hybrid uncloaked by Frank Filipponio (RSS feed) on Aug 28th 2010 at 1:29PM 2011 Ram 1500 Hybrid captured by Rich Truesdell of Automotive Traveler While recently shooting some cloaked Chrysler and Hyundai prototypes, Automotive Traveler's Rich Truesdell came across several completely undisguised Ram 1500 pickups the other day. As Rich tells it: Upon closer examination, I figured out why: They are near-production-ready versions of the rumored 2-Mode Hybrid version. Judging by the complete lack of cloaking, I'd assume they are undergoing final validation, possibly to establish their published tow ratings. Don't be surprised if the Ram is an early…

Ram Trucks debuts new 2011 Outdoorsman, RamBox Holster by Jeremy Korzeniewski (RSS feed) on Aug 12th 2010 at 3:30PM "We asked Ram Truck customers – boaters, campers, fishing enthusiasts and hunters – what features would they like to see in a truck. They answered 'more capability, more room for my gear and ready to hit the trail. And make it affordable.'" So says Fred Diaz, President and CEO of Chrysler's Ram Truck Brand. And apparently, he's not just blowing smoke. Chrysler's internal research suggests that 62 percent of fullsize pickup truck owners hunt, fish or camp. The automaker's response to these apparent needs is the new 2011 Ram Outdoorsman. Functional upgra…

Undeterred by critics, Ram aims to expand its truck, van lineup Bradford Wernle and Luca Ciferri Automotive News -- July 26, 2010 - 12:01 am ET Some critics chastised Chrysler Group for separating the Ram brand from Dodge. American pickup buyers are devoted to their brands -- Chevy, Ford and Dodge -- and anybody who messes with that is asking for trouble, the critics reasoned. Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne responded that the separation gives Dodge room to breathe as a youth- and family-oriented brand. Ram will attack the commercial-van market by rebadging two Fiat vans. Ram will keep the distinctive ram's horns logo that identified Dodges in recent years. Ram …

Ram Trucks begin offering spray-in bedliner 04/13/2010, 4:33 PMBY ANDREW GANZ Chrysler’s Ram Trucks division – once a part of Dodge – says that it will begin taking orders for its line of 1500, 2500 and 3500-series Ram trucks with factory-applied spray-on bed liners. A popular aftermarket accessory, the factory spray-on liners will cost $450 from Ram Trucks and will be available on every single model, every cab and every bed length the automaker offers. “Creating a stand-alone brand for Ram Trucks has allowed us to concentrate on how customers are using their trucks and what new features they’d like to see,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO, Ram Truck division, in a …

In new ads, Ram truck stands alone Bradford Wernle Automotive News -- March 29, 2010 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT -- A new advertising campaign this spring for the 2010 Ram Heavy Duty pickup features the deep, resonant voice of actor Sam Elliott and celebrates the Dodge-like manly American pickup virtues of toughness, utility and durability. But nowhere in the campaign is the word "Dodge" to be found. That's just as Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne wants it. Marchionne is trying to rebuild Chrysler Group around strong brand identities. Last year he decreed that the Ram brand would be separate from Dodge in the same way Fiat and Fiat Professional are separate brands in Eur…

Update: Texas high school gets to keep using Ram logo by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Mar 10th, 2010 at 4:28PM Remember a couple weeks back when we told you about Chrysler's improbable legal battle against little Lake Mary High School in Florida? Chrysler's legal team put the smack down on the school for using the Ram logo as its school insignia, and the law jockeys in Auburn Hills, MI were giving the school until June 15 to remove all instances of the logo at a considerable cost to the school district and neighborhood taxpayers. It appears cooler heads have prevailed at Chrysler, as Allpar is reporting that the school and automaker have made an agreement that allows the …

Chrysler legal turns into schoolyard bully over use of Ram logo by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Feb 20th, 2010 at 3:22PM About the same time Chrysler and Fiat executives were running through a marathon eight -hour look into the future with the world's automotive, Pentastar lawyers were working over the principal at Lake Mary High School in Lake Mary, Florida. You may be asking yourself what Chrysler lawyers would want with principal Michael Kotkin when, just six months earlier, The Pentastar needed billions of taxpayer dollars to exit bankruptcy. Good question, for sure, but the answer is pretty lame. Moto Bullet reports that Chrysler's legal department was reportedly all…
