From the newly unveiled Ram 1500 Rebel, to Dodge's popular Blacktop models, no other automaker seems to love special edition models quite like the Fiat Chrysler bunch. And if a recent trademark filing is any indication, FCA could have yet another special model on its way to buyers in the future. FCA filed for the Golden Eagle trademark with the United States Trademark and Patent Office on December 12, 2014. If the Golden Eagle name sounds familiar to you, it should: it was first used on special edition Jeep models in the late '70s, and as recently as 2006. Golden Eagle edition Jeeps typically carried special eagle graphics and gold wheels, hence the name. Considering F…

Stop me if you heard this or a variation of this story before. Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley told Australian media at the Detroit Auto Show that the brand is still considering whether or not do a Wrangler Pickup. “Firstly we are now well into the program for Wrangler renewal. It’s a longer-cycle program because of what the vehicle is. You know I am a big advocate of a Wrangler pick-up, [but] as part of that, the decision will or will not be made regarding a pick-up [variant]. From my perspective, it fits into the portfolio exactly,” said Manley. Now Jeep has been floating the idea of Wrangler Pickup for a number of years. In 2005, Jeep showed off the Gladiator, fol…

Jeep has always been the most important part of Chrysler. But now its an important part of new car sales in general. Automotive News has been crunching the numbers and has figured out that in the past eleven months, automakers have sold around 780,000 more vehicles than at this same time last year. Out of that, one out of every four was a Jeep. Jeep has been having a remarkable 2014. The brand has seen its sales sales climb 44 percent in the past year. Brand loyalty has also been rising, with Jeep posting a increase of 16 percent. That puts it right behind Maserati and Mitsubishi according to IHS automotive. Jeep's massive growth has also been helping out its parent com…

Since the announcement was made that SRT would be integrated back into Dodge, the question of what would happen to the Chrysler 300 SRT and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT has been up in the air. We've heard that the former would be canceled, while the latter would live on. But how? The folks at Allpar may have the answer. They report that Chrysler has trademarked 'Trackhawk'. This could be a way for Jeep to link this to their linked with the “Trail Rated” Trailhawk models. Trackhawk could also allow Jeep to build other performance models. This also could also mean that Jeep is doing something completely different with the name (think trim level or a concept). Nevertheless, we'…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 18, 2013 A few weeks ago, Chrysler put on a defying stance by saying no to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration order to recall about 2.7 million Jeep SUVs due to concerns of fires erupting from rear-end collisions. "Chrysler Group has been working and sharing data with the Agency on this issue since September 2010. The company does not agree with NHTSA’s conclusions and does not intend to recall the vehicles cited in the investigation. The subject vehicles are safe and are not defective," the company said in a statement. Today, the company changed course and announced they would recall the 2.7 millio…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 22, 2013 Jeep's long-standing nightmare is over. Automotive News is reporting that deliveries of the Cherokee will be heading off to dealers within the next ten days. Chrysler is in the process of installing new software smooth out how the engine, nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system interact. After the new software is installed, car haulers are loaded up and sent out. The trucks drop the Cherokees are taken to a test facality where they are unloaded and driven on a test track to see if the software has worked. From there, Cherokees are either sent to a lot where they await being shipped o…

Like every other automaker, Jeep is looking at ways to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy in light of more stringent regulations. One technology the off-road brand is looking at is hybrid technology. “We are absolutely looking at different things in that field and we are very active behind the scenes in the development of these systems and how it fits into our profile,” said Chrysler’s Asia-Pacific product planning manager, Steve Bartoli, to Drive.com.au. “With greenhouse gas and regulatory constraints around the world, it is definitely pushing our hand in that way but we haven’t made any decisions on that and we’re not ready to talk about that.” Bartoli said t…

Hi everyone, I was just reading a post on the future of EVs in off-roading and four-wheeling circles and was left wondering what Jeep owners and enthusiasts think (see here for the article: http://auto-trim.org/2013/12/24/offroading-in-an-ev/). Will this catch on anytime soon? There's no question that the benefits for the environment are there but the tech is not quite ready yet. In addition there is the recent prediction form the US Dept of Energy that states that most cars on the road by 2040 will still use gas. So, is it just wishful thinking to assume that sooner rather than later we will be getting Jeeps and rock crawlers which are true EVs?

The Jeepster will based on the upcoming Fiat 500X crossover and feature more a rugged appearance. Front-wheel drive will be standard, while all-wheel drive will be a option. I think the Patriot and its ugly sister, Compass, will go down in history with the 80's-90's Cherokee as The Jeep That Runs Forever. Although they are much more of a street vehicle, I see people are getting a heck of a lot of wear out of these Jeeplets.

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 31, 2013 Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne vowed this week that the company would not repeat the mistakes that caused the new 2014 Cherokee to be delayed. "What we've learned is that we'll never repeat it. We're never going to take a plant down and be out of the market for over a year," Marchionne said on a call with analysts. The Cherokee is the first Chrysler vehicle to use a new nine-speed automatic transmission. However, problems arose with how the engine, nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system interacted with each other. Engineers worked for months to create a software patch to smooth out…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 15, 2013 It has been a few weeks since we reported on the Jeep Cherokee and its transmission woes and the news hasn't gotten better. The Detroit News is reporting that Cherokees are still parked at the Toledo factory where they are built. There is some good news though. Chrysler appears to be in final stages of testing a new powertrain calibration that should help the transmission and get vehicles onto dealer lots. “Chrysler Group is in the final stages of validating the updated powertrain calibrations,” said Gualberto Ranieri, vice president of communications for Chrysler. “Once the latest powertrain calibratio…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 27, 2013 Back on Wednesday, Chrysler announced that they were temporarily laying-off 500 workers from the second shift at their Toledo, Ohio plant because the company had built enough Jeep Cherokees for the launch in the fall. It was only later that we learned that Chrysler is still having problems with the Cherokee's nine-speed automatic transmission. Now Chrysler is reversing their decision to layoff workers. Automotive News is reporting that Chrysler will bring back the second shift next Monday to building Cherokees again. In a statement, Chrysler revealed that engineers are hard at work on software patches …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 23, 2013 In a surprising move today, Chrysler has halted Cherokee production at its Toledo, Ohio plant. “We have been producing vehicles since the end of June and have now built the critical number of vehicles we need to stock dealerships once containment is released. We will temporarily idle the second shift so as not to put additional strain on our logistics partners to get these vehicles into the hands of customers as quickly and efficiently as possible upon release,” said Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson in a statement this afternoon. Chrysler has idled 500 workers from the second shift and is expected to…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 17, 2013 The Detroit Fress Press reports that production of the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee has been delayed by month due to “wide range of issues”. “We did start with an initial scheduled plan of the third week in May, and now we are into mid-June. That is just due to a wide range of issues,” said Mark Chernoby, Chrysler’s senior vice president of engineering Those issues range from adjusting both tooling and manual tasks on the assembly line to properly calibrating the new nine-speed automatic transmission. “These are pretty much common issues with everything we launch. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 4, 2013 In a surprising form of defiance, Chrysler has said no the demand made by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokees and Liberties due to fuel tanks that could catch on fire in a rear end accident. NHTSA has been investigating since 2010 and alleges that 1993 through 2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002 through 2007 Liberty are more prone to fuel leaks and fires. In its analysis, NHTSA found that 51 deaths involved Grand Cherokees and Liberties in rear-end accidents that caught on fire. NHTSA alleges the reasons for this are the tanks being made out of plastic and bein…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 21, 2013 Jeep is making some very ambitious goals with the introduction of the new 2014 Cherokee. One of those goals is to produce 250,000 Cherokees annually at Jeep's Toledo, Ohio plant. "We are going to build almost half-a-million cars a year here in Toledo. We are going to do 220,000 with the Wrangler and we are going to do 250,000 on the Cherokee side," said Bruce Baumhower, president of UAW Local 12. Whether Jeep meets this ambitious goal or not with the new Cherokee remains to be seen. Jeep does have a couple things going for it though. For starters, the Cherokee name in the nineties was a very popular ve…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 7, 2013 When Jeep released some of the shots of the new 2014 Cherokee before its official debut at the New York Auto Show, it was open season on the web as most everyone dog-piled on the looks of it. However Chrysler’s design chief, Ralph Gilles is standing behind it. Talking with Wards Auto, Gilles explained that the Cherokee marks the next step in the evolution of the design for Jeep. “When you contrast it to the outgoing Liberty…I think it’s a huge departure, obviously from the previous one. But it’s also going to be seen as very current in the way that Jeep has evolved its aesthetic to a very contemporary p…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 3, 2013 For those who wish the Jeep Wrangler could come with a diesel option, your wish might be coming true. Wards Auto had the chance to talk with Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley and asked about the possibility of a diesel for the Wrangler. “Wrangler is on the radar to get (a) diesel. Remember we’re also going through the product change of Wrangler for 2015-16. That will probably be the right time to introduce the diesel into that vehicle," Manley revealed. “I’m confident that the Grand Cherokee will show just how large a demand there is for diesel, and I think what that will do is reinforce the need for us…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 30, 2013 When Jeep introduces the new Liberty SUV at the New York Auto Show later in March, it might be wearing a new nameplate. “There are clearly only two options for the name of this vehicle: It’s either going to be Cherokee or it’s going to be Liberty. We are going to make that decision in the very near future. Both of them are historical names, Cherokee more so than Liberty,” said Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley. The Liberty replaced the Cherokee in 2002 and has been struggling for sales during its lifespan. Outside of North America, Jeep has left the Cherokee nameplate. Also coming from Jeep is a ne…

Finally, they're well past the cobbled-up mule stage with the new Cherokee. It's shaping up to be pretty sporty looking, although from some angles it belies its FWD proportions with a short door-to-wheel distance and long front overhang. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 14, 2013 You might be wondering to yourself, didn’t Jeep just update the Compass and Patriot a couple years ago? You would be correct as Jeep updated both models in the 2011 model year. But Jeep apparently had a couple more tricks up its sleeve with the 2014 Compass and Patriot. The big news for the Compass and Patriot is the introduction of a six-speed automatic transmission for front-wheel drive models and models equipped with the Freedom-Drive I off-road package. Vehicles equipped with the Freedom-Drive II package stick with the CVT. Jeep says the six-speed automatic increases fuel economy by 15%. If you’r…

Chrysler would end the agreement in 2009. But now, Jeep vehicles could be rolling off the line again in China. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 12, 2012 We've been talking about the new Jeep Liberty for the past couple of months. We've learned so far the new Liberty will use Fiat's new CUSW Plus platform, and come with a new 3.2L V6 and nine-speed ZF transmission. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 13, 2012 As we reported back in June, Jeep is planning a short 2013 model year for the Grand Cherokee to make way for the 2014 model. G. Noble Editor/Reporter CheersandGears.com March 30, 2012 With much bated breath, Jeep enthusiasts have been keeping a close eye on what will turn up to replace the Liberty. While most, if not all Jeep-philes have been clamoring for a revival of sorts of the venerable old XJ Cherokee — the SUV the Liberty originally replaced back in 2001 — recent news seems to suggest that Jeep’s upcoming new model will be anything but. Went up again. Needless to say once again the jeep exceed expectations. I wish the photos would convey what the jeep actually managed to get through. However, the day was not without damage. After riding for about mile and a half discovered my passenger side caliper was sticking badly. After finding the rock outcrop where I knew be sturdy enough to do the repairs.
