Fuel mileage fears doom Chrysler Imperial Link to Original Article @ DetNews Chrysler, the fourth-largest U.S. automaker, dropped plans for the new Imperial luxury sedan because of rising gasoline prices and tougher fuel-economy regulations, Bloomberg News and the Windsor Star reported today. Executives made the decision within the past few weeks, Chrysler spokesman Ed Saenz told Bloomberg today. The Auburn Hills-based automaker unveiled the Imperial two years ago and had planned to start production in 2009 in Brampton, Ontario. "There was no business case for us to bring it to the market," Saenz said. "We will continue to look for a future product for the plant." Th…

I was driving along the other day, and I noticed that the Calgary Police Service is replacing their Impalas, and to a smaller extent, their Crown Vics with Dodge Chargers... from what I saw, it looked real mean with a reinforced bumper, steel wheels and a blacked out grille (Sorry, no pics). This has led me to ask the question- is Dodge winning back favour in the police market... How have these cars caught on elsewhere?

Since someone posted about the MB lighting question, I have a Dodge one. Last week I was on Sunrise Highway and saw a Calibur signaling. I was in the left lane doing a conservative, well, I was going faster. When I passed it, I noticed it's headlight was flashing as a directional. I thought it was very odd. Then later I saw it changing lanes again and the other headlight was acting as a directional. It was during the day, and I wondered if it had something to do with it being more visible using daytime running headlamps. Is it just a freak of nature electrical problem or does someone know if it's supposed to do that?

New Ram key for Chrysler Top designer will update Dodge pickup Link to Original Article @ Detroit Free Press Ralph Gilles, one of Chrysler's top designers, went down to Texas to find inspiration for the new Dodge Ram pickup, which will go on sale next year. The Ram, a supremely important part of the Chrysler lineup, is in need of an update and faces intense competition, especially from General Motors' new Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota's new full-size Tundra and Ford, which is gearing up to launch a new F-150 next year. In an interview with the Free Press this week, Gilles, 37, spoke carefully about the upcoming redesign of the Ram, not wanting to spill too many secrets …

Chrysler Imperial one step closer to production Link to Autoblog Chrysler may be in the middle of a major ownership change, but the beat goes on when it comes to future vehicle plans. The folks over at The Star are reporting that Chrysler is going to build a fifth model at their Brampton plant in Ontario, which currently assembles the 300, Charger, and Magnum. Challenger production is scheduled for next year, and the fifth vehicle, which could be built in 09' as a 2010 model, is expected to be the Imperial. Chrysler is reportedly investing $700 million in the Brampton plant to bring the Imperial to life, and the Rolls-Royce and Bentley wannabe is expected to ride on …

Despite slow sales, Crossfire will be back in 2008 By BRADFORD WERNLE | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Updated: 07/02/07, 8:49 am et DETROIT - The Chrysler Crossfire - once a dramatic symbol of the promised synergies in the DaimlerChrysler merger, a marriage of German technology and American style - has become a bargain bin sports car. That merger is ending with the sale of Chrysler to Cerberus Capital Management, but the Crossfire will soldier on. The 2008 model goes into production this summer, adding a tire pressure monitoring system and other minor changes. In 2006, Crossfire orders were suspended because of slow sales. Unsold 2006 and 2007 Crossfires sa…

Soaring Wrangler sales anchor slumping Jeep division David Aguilar | Associated Press | Link to Original Article @ DetNews DETROIT -- Apparently, the Jeep Wrangler is rugged -- and capable of hauling an entire division out of the swamp. The popular two- and four-door sport utility is coming off its best-ever May while buoying a slumping Jeep division beset by declining sales. According to Autodata Corp., Jeep sold 12,332 Wranglers in May, up 114 percent compared to the same month last year. For the year, 54,699 Wranglers have been sold, an 85 percent increase compared to last year. Strong Wrangler sales also helped fuel an overall 20 percent May sales increase for J…

Carpoint is Australia's best motoring website (Drive is pandering rubbish), and their reviews are always very, very fair and balanced. They're never as pretentious and arrogant as British reviews, biased and poorly-written as Motor Trend reviews, or dull and boring like all other American reviews (don't believe me? Pick up an issue of Top Gear mag and CAR and read them back-to-back with MT and C&D) They just reviewed the '07 Sebring Convertible, which goes on sale here in a few months. Although things are looking bad for Chrysler and their products have appeared to fail terribly, perhaps we have been wrong? The ultra-touchy Brits haven't moaned too much about the new…

Chery-Chrysler deal to get OK American automaker is expected to become the first to build Chinese autos for U.S. market Rick Blanchard | Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News DaimlerChrysler AG and Chery Automobile Co. struck a deal on Dec. 30 making Chrysler the first major carmaker to confirm plans to sell Chinese-built cars in the United States. Chery is expected to produce a subcompact for Chrysler that will likely be sold in the United States under the Dodge brand in 2009. Since everyone gets a shot at how they would fix brands/companies, I figure I'll give it a go. And no, nothing is being sold off. Dodge: The brand stands for bold, designs that don't follow the crowd, powerful, and performance oriented. Dodge isn't badly damaged IMO, and there are some easy thing that could properly repair it. Ram: Ram is up for redesign, the powertrains seem promising, as does the styling. Give it a truley great interior and it should be in good shape Charger: Give the 2.7L a 5-speed automatic, and improve the interior design/materials some. Magnum: Add 5-speed to the 2.7L Caliber: Upgrade the materials in the interior, teh design itself is…

Chrysler puts '06 vehicles in used lots Automaker allows dealers to add deep discounts in effort to unload cars and trucks Josee Valcourt / The Detroit News In a last-ditch effort to unload 2006 cars and trucks, Chrysler allowed its dealers to designate the new vehicles as "loaners" for as little as one day before selling them as used for steep discounts. The unusual sales tactic came at the end of May as the Auburn Hills-based division of DaimlerChrysler AG was trying to finish the month on a strong note. Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealers can use new vehicles as loaners for test-drives or for customers who need a car while theirs is in service. In the past, dealers …

Chrysler rethinks design after duds Automaker vows to overhaul its vehicle development after Nitro, Sebring miss mark Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News A top Chrysler Group executive said in a recent frank internal question-and-answer session with employees that the automaker seriously misjudged the market in developing the panned Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Nitro last year, and is swiftly moving to improve current and future vehicles. Promotion Problem Minivan launch raises questions in Chrysler's marketing department By MARY CONNELLY | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Updated: 06/05/07, 8:52 am et DETROIT -- Chrysler group dealers start ordering the company's 2008 minivans this week, and Chrysler's promotion of the vehicles raises several major marketing questions. For instance: In an era of crossovers and strong competition from Japanese automakers, how will the company position the redesigned Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country in the U.S. market? And how will the company better define and differentiate its brands? Yet another question: Who will oversee the minivan launch…

Dodge Hornet gets the go-ahead Link to Original Article @ AutoCar Chrysler will shortly announce that it is going ahead with the launch of its Dodge Hornet supermini, which it will develop in collaboration with Chinese company Chery. The car could be revealed in close-to-production guise at this autumn’s Frankfurt motor show. The Hornet was first shown as a concept at the Geneva motor show in 2006, where it was widely admired for its tough-looking style. Chrysler plans to enter the crowded European supermini segment with the one range, resisting the temptation to launch a Chrysler-branded version alongside, as it has done with the Mondeo-class Dodge Avenger and Chry…

Rethinking the Car Company Private-equity firm Cerberus is expected to transform Chrysler into an automobile manufacturer like no other. What the future may hold. May 17, 2007 - Henry Ford created the defining engine of the American auto industry with his mighty River Rogue factory in the 1920s. Huge freighters loaded with iron ore and rubber docked at one end of mile-long warren of foundries and factories, while on the other end shiny black Model A automobiles rolled off the assembly line every 49 seconds. At the dawn of the Internet age, Michael Dell created a new model for manufacturing. At his factories, the guts of his computers—circuit boards, frames, memory chips…

The first '69 Dodge Charger to portray The Dukes of Hazzard's "General Lee" returns to its flight line By John Pearley Huffman Date posted: 02-06-2007 By now, The Dukes of Hazzard and the orange '69 Dodge Charger called the General Lee are as much a part of American culture as hamburgers and pickup trucks. Already a co-founder of the North American General Lee Fan Club and the owner of a General Lee replica, Travis solidified his status as king of the Dukes fans in 2003 when he took …

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/18/cerberu...sler-financial/ I know it had been mentioned plenty that Cerberus would now own both Chrysler and a controlling stake in GMAC, but what's interesting is thinking about this in context of Chrysler Credit and GMAC tieups. I don't know what kind of synergies could be found (I'm not that well versed on the financial sector) but these companies are already cash cows. If they did find synergies and made a tieup, that alone could go a long way toward justifying their investment in Chrysler.

Saving Chrysler. Maybe. Cerberus is not out to bail out the automaker for the good of America. What the firm—and the union—really want. (Taken from Newsweek) May 14, 2007 - Detroit was stunned Monday morning to wake up to the news that Chrysler had been sold to Cerberus Capital Management, a Wall Street private equity firm named for the three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hell. The unsettling news grew even more ominous when one of the Detroit TV stations began broadcasting the news conference live from Germany with a stern-sounding German translator drowning out the English being spoken by DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche. It all reminded me of that R.E.M…

Yesterday, I had to do an administrative errand that involved some important paperwork and traveling between Northern California and Northern Nevada. So, I went on-line and rented an ECONOMY car from one of the majors. Upon arriving at the lot, there were no $ 18.99 economy cars, so I knew an upgrade was in order for the same price. The people in front of me were given a Jeep but I wanted something with an actual trunk, so the lady gave me a base model Chrysler 300. Now, I've probably posted before that I am quite disenchanted with the styling of most Chrysler products...and the 300 is no exception. 0-Day 4-Door Wrangler Supply? Jeep dealer Chuck Eddy in Austintown, Ohio, was used to waiting until spring for Jeep Wrangler customers to show up. When autumn came, sales of the old two-door Wrangler would pretty much dry up. That's because the previous Wrangler, sold with two doors only, was a "box on shocks," a rough and ready vehicle with a drop-down top and side windows made of plastic. It was noisy and the ride bouncy, but it could go anywhere. Wrangler drivers got closer to the elements than drivers of other vehicles. All that changed when the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited four-door arrived last fall. These days Eddy has zero days' supply -- in the midst of a …

After talking with the service technician, he recommended that I leave it be for now because it would got 90 bucks an hour and it's a 2 hour or so job for a couple of bulbs. He was pretty honest with me. He told me they'd fix it if I wanted but it's pretty expensive for a couple of bulbs. As long as it's readable it's fine. He also gave me a discount card for oil changes. Basically it's a dollar off the first oil change, and a dollar is added until the 5th one...which is free. Anyway, I walk into the showroom and see the salesman (whose name is Eric). We greet and talk …

A little respect, please The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible doesn't have to be a true luxury car to hit the mark in its segment, but it sure wouldn't hurt. Up to now, you've most likely encountered the Chrysler Sebring convertible on a rental car lot. Mentioned in particular: the textures, tones and abundance of unattractive plastic trim. The concern is that "you can get to a point where maybe your cars aren't really competitive anymor…

Armed and ready to kick some perp's butt http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...otopanel..1.*#2 What Works: Powerful engine, agile chassis, mean and athletic-looking. What Needs Work: Small trunk, low rear-door opening, high-effort shifter, a bit narrow for hips wearing gun belts. Bottom Line: Dodge fortifies the Charger for enforcement duty and produces the most capable police sedan ever built.

Chrysler Imperial Gets Royal Flush From CAW Plant By Eric Mayne Link to Full Article @ WardsAuto.com, Mar 2, 2007 9:20 AM Workers at Chrysler Group’s assembly plant in Brampton, ON, Canada, have thrown a monkey wrench into the embattled auto maker’s long-term product plans. Brampton workers rejected a company proposal that asked them to forfeit C$134 ($115) per week in return for the contract to build a vehicle, dubbed ‘Product X’ for purposes of the vote. However, Ward’s learns the vehicle is the contentious Chrysler Imperial sedan, and production is targeted for 2010. The wages in question represent extra pay negotiated by the Canadian Auto Workers union as compe…

Today I was busy running errands, and the last on my list was to stop at the parts store for a tail light bulb for the Intrepid. NAPA closes early apparently (at 5pm). I sit in the parking lot and think what I should do now..and I decide I'll take a ride to Tom Manzi Dodge to ask about the blown lights on my temp gauge and part of my tach. To my disappointment, the parts and service area was also closed (at 5). I was kinda bummed, but I noticed that the showroom was still open. I decided to go in check it out. A salesman greeted me (he had kinda long hair), and asked if he could help me with anything. I told him (part of) why I came, and he said to come back tomorrow and …

March 07, 2007 Here is a link to an article posted by DBeaSSt. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070307/bs_nm/...w_chrysler_dc_1 March 01, 2007 In Chrysler's For-Sale Saga, Another One Bites the Dust SHANGHAI, China — China's largest auto group, SAIC, said it has no plans to buy Chrysler or any other overseas firm. The company was responding to media reports that it has been talking with DaimlerChrysler. Two years ago, SAIC acquired a controlling interest in Korean utility-vehicle make Ssangyong, and the company also holds a minority interest in GM Daewoo. Reuters quoted an SAIC spokeswoman as saying, "We have no plans for acquisitions at the moment." Another rumor…

There is speculation in the greater Toronto media, starting yesterday, that Mississauga, Ontario based parts supplier Magna is looking at buying Chrysler. The reaction in the lunch room here was largely that people would consider Chrysler again, if it were Canadian, and especially if it were based in the GTA (greater Toronto). What would your reaction be to a Canadian owned Chrysler? How would the UAW respond?

We heard it may be coming, now it looks like it's almost official. I wonder if DCX hoping that if these partnerships grow, Chery may be interested in purchasing Chrysler from Daimler? DaimlerChrysler Supervisory Board Approves Small-Car Agreement Auburn Hills, Mich./Stuttgart, Germany - The DaimlerChrysler Supervisory Board today approved the framework of a limited partnership to develop small vehicles between the Chrysler Group and Chery Motor Company of China. The deal is still contingent upon approval by the Chinese government, but the final pact of the framework is expected to be signed by the end of March. Under the non-equity partnership, Chery-built vehicl…

http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/1582/ The Dodge Viper has joined that exclusive club of cars that will top 250mph. In fact, the Hennessey Venom Twin Turbo, as this particular tuned Viper is called, is claimed to whup a Veyron's ass with a top speed of 255mph. Other vital statistics include a 1,000bhp 8.3-litre V10 engine with two turbos attached and 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds. Developed by American tuner Hennessey, the Venom comes with aerodynamic aids to keep it pinned to the ground at full tilt. These include a new front air dam and rear diffuser. There's also adjustable traction control and a heavy-duty rear differential to cope with the power. Despite th…

I just got a look at the new Sebring while driving around the Bay Area. I saw the ribs on the hood and the chunky (Altima-ish) rear greenhouse and super short trunk, not to mention the all too visible gas tank. Good God! While the previous Sebring / Stratus were not the pinnacle of automotive design, they were at least proportioned and likeable. Then, let's add a few more "grandiose" designs to their stable: - the entire truck line with that bulbous grille which says I need to buy my testosterone because I don't have it within, or for some guys (and maybe girls) who do have it but need an exaggerated amount - the 300 and the Magnum - again, bombastic proportions …

Forbes Article This is interesting.... It says they have discussing splitting the company for 2 months! Market Scan Analysts Scoff At Chrysler Spin-off Parmy Olson, 02.12.07, 5:35 PM ET Like someone who has resorted to digging around the back of their couch for spare change, DaimlerChrysler is in such dire need of funds that it should now spin off its loss-making Chrysler unit for the extra cash it could bring in. DaimlerChrysler (nyse: DCX - news - people ) shareholder DWS said in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung said that Daimler, which divested part of EADS last week, should consider carving off Chrysler. "It would be irresponsible f…

Chrysler Cuts Will Bind It More to Benz Deeper integration on tap as Daimler tries to fix Chrysler. by Joseph Szczesny (2007-02-05) DaimlerChrysler intends to tie together the company's German and American wings more tightly than ever under the new plan for reviving the fortunes of the ailing Chrysler Group. The Financial Times reported the rescue plan would include greater use of common components and systems by both the Chrysler Group and Mercedes-Benz Group. The use of common components has been a contentious issue since the merger was first proposed in 1998 but it has gradually become more acceptable as both groups have faced intense cost pressures. The Wa…

There has been a lot of speculation and rumors the past year or two as to what would be the next SRT8 engine. From 6.4 to 6.7 to 7.0 and a few other "liters". There was also talk of the "392" only being available as a crate motor. I was told a couple years ago at the SEMA show that the "392" would ONLY be referred to as a "392" and NOT a "6.4", but recent documents list it as "6.4"... maybe they will still call it a "392" for the Challenger, who knows. Well, the next SRT8 engine WILL be a 6.4L SMPI engine with specs similar to the 392, more than 500 HP with similar numbers for torque. The new engine will debut in the SRT8 version of the Challenger, rumored for the 2009 m…

Reviews: 2008 Dodge Avenger Avenger will compete in a tough market segment, going up against leaders like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, as well as the newly-improved Malibu . It will be a tough fight. The new sedan may slip in a few categories, but it definitely stands out on the design front. And for many potential buyers, we think that will more than overcome its shortfalls. The Car Connection --- For all its newness, the Avenger assumes much the same place in the automotive sky as the Stratus. It's got some style and it's got some space, but this Dodge is built to a price, and you can tell when you put it next to a Honda Accord, Nissan Altima or Toyota Cam…

Compass Advertising Still as Bad as Ever The gang of Hip Hop-thumping bobbleheads that cruised town in television spots for the new Jeep Compass last summer are no more. They've been replaced by City Man, a figure created from street signs and scrapped urban parts with a penchant for surfing and yoga. The new print and television ad campaign, dubbed "Urban Playground," is aimed at young, urban buyers. A television spot -- showing a Jeep Compass zipping through urban streets, creating a swirl of wind that amasses urban fixtures to create City Man, began airing nationwide on Jan. 15. The 30-second spot showed up on the Web site, YouTube.com, on Friday. "Urban Playgrou…

Only one transmission away from a success If you ever had any doubt that it's better to be the younger sibling, check out the 2007 Jeep Patriot. The boxy 2007 Patriot compact SUV is the third vehicle the Chrysler Group has spun off its new small-car platform. First there was the Dodge Caliber — the odd-looking hunchback hatchback with a cheap interior and lackluster performance. Then there was the Jeep Compass — a vehicle so utterly wrong-headed that, in the future, a Ph.D. candidate in marketing will write a thesis about it. Fortunately the 2007 Jeep Patriot is the best of this otherwise dysfunctional family. Rendezvous syndrome Perhaps it's the Rendezvous synd…

I've been doing tons of research...and it seems that the compass is getting really positive reviews from consumers. The only common issue is a rear blindspot... It's odd because people here have been mocking it... Well I'm in defense of the compass. It's a pretty competant vehicle for its price. Also the new patriot is even better...and cheaper. "I test-drove the rav 4 V6 in direct comparison, and liked the compass much better - at thousands less!" "I LOVE my Jeep Compass!!! Everything I ever wanted in a vehicle. I had a 2003 Jeep Liberty that I also loved but wanted something more, like a car and of course I found it in another Jeep product." "I just bought…

Chrysler Dropping SWB Minivans The Chrysler group is betting that new crossover models will woo minivan buyers now that the automaker is dropping short-wheelbase minivans. Industry sources say the automaker will offer two mid-sized crossovers, developed on its new front-drive Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger platform. The sources say the Dodge crossover is due in December and will be assembled in Chrysler's Toluca, Mexico plant, where the PT Cruiser is made. The Chrysler crossover will debut either in late 2008 or 2009. Frank Klegon, executive vice president of product development for the Chrysler group, said "in the future you will see some other things from us" t…
