By Roland Jones Associate editor MSNBC Time was when automakers would slap a wad of cash on a car’s hood to shift it off a dealer’s lot. These days, with gasoline prices climbing to new record highs almost daily, they’re slapping down a can of gas instead. With the summer driving season just around the corner, Chrysler recently launched its “Let’s Refuel America” program — an offer that caps the price of gasoline at $2.99 a gallon for three years for people who buy or lease new vehicles from the maker of Dodge and Jeep vehicles. The automaker, which was acquired last year by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management for $7.4 billion, said this week that th…

dont know if this has been posted yet i looked but didnt see anything. In the first few pages of this months muscle car review was information stating that the 5.7 R/T challengers will have 2 versions of the 5.7 a 370hp version for the auto and a 375 version for the 6sp. also in the mix is the 3.5 250hp for the SE. http://www.leftlanenews.com/dodge-challenger.html theres the back up info. -edit- got out my issue of muscle car review and it states that there will be a ram air hood, cold air intake, long tube headers, a custom after cat exhaust, crankshafts, and cams and heads for the hemis. suspension upgrades include coilovers, performance springs, and a strut…

OK, so on a whim, I test-drove the Dodge Journey at my local (as in "across-the-street") Dodge dealership. Specs and options: - 3.5L V6. 6AT - MyGIG with video screen (also backup camera) - Only 5 seats (they didn't have a 7-seater on the lot) Interior impressions: - Decent interior, actually one of the best I've seen on recent Dodge offerings - Shifter has a weird downward angle... it's on an incline away from me instead of flat or toward me - Couldn't pull up the nav screen for some reason... I don't think the DVD was loaded, and so the option wasn't there... and just now, I realized that the LCD screen goes with the entertainment system and that the nav…

Not sure how accurate this is...this Inside Line article claims that Chrysler will get a B-segment model from Nissan (I thought Chery was going to be their provider for a subcompact) and that the next-gen Titan will be a restyled Ram, for 2011. Interesting if this turns out to be true. Inside Line article on Chrysler, Nissan JV

Ok, so these two are old, very old. The Backpack was a 1995 concept that was, frankly, cool. Almost useless (c'mon, a pickup with a 3ft bed?) but totally cool. Should have been produced just for the sake of producing it. The Expresso (wikipedia lists it as a Plymouth, the website the pics come from says its a Chrysler), on the other hand, should have had a coathanger abortion before the public could be subjected to it. Just a couple random Plymouth concepts from back in the day.

Just for speculation and entertainment purposes, what would you like to see from Chrysler in the years to come? Although I am not supporting the idea, I will post my lineup based on the rumor that Chrysler = cars, Dodge = trucks, and Jeep = SUVs. Chrysler: Compact coupe and sedan, FWD, with 1.8L, 2.4L, 2.4L light-pressure and 2.4L high-pressure turbos. Direct injection on all gas engines. AWD available with the high-pressure turbo engine in an SRT-4 model for both bodystyles. Small diesel engine available. Hybrid model available. 6 speed manual and 6 speed conventional automatic transmissions. TSX/WRX competitor with American flavor. Compact hatch/wagon. Sa…

According to Stuart Schorr, Senior Manager of Sales, Service and Dealer Communications, Chrysler minivan sales may be down, but retail demand is actually stronger. His article in The Firehouse (blog) indicates that, compared with their long-wheelbase brethren, the Chrysler has increased retail sales by over 75%, while the Dodge has gone up over 25%. He wrote, "The total reduction in Chrysler minivan sales is solely because of planned fleet reductions and not any consumer trend. In fact consumers are demanding more minivans." The moderately popular and less-expensive short-wheelbase minivans were dropped when Chrysler and Dodge moved to their 2008 models. Source: Allpa…

I don't know if this has been confirmed or discussed much yet today but while I was going to the W.P. Chrysler Museum today, I got lost at the tech center. While we were trying to find the Museum again, we drove by a holding lot of their test cars I believe and what comes to my attention, a lime green Chery A1 sitting with all of the other Chryslers. However, I saw at least one or two more sitting there so Chrysler is indeed testing the possiblities. It doesn't appear they want to hide the car as there was no camo and and lime green stands out in a sea of silver and black cars. Also I saw a new Challenger today going north on I-75 between Squirrel road and Crooks Rd.

Head over to Jalopnik for some spy photos of a Nitro SRT8. Chrysler can't seriously be thinking of bringing an SRT8-badged Dodge Nitro to market, can they? Well, if this latest batch of spy photos from the spy shooters at KGP are right, then they are. But they can't be! Seriously. It's inconceivable. We don't care where they found this manufacturer-plated madness (right outside of the Firehouse in downtown Detroit) or what it has slapped on the back (an SRT8 badge), but it's hard to argue with photographic evidence. We'll assume it's an engineer having a little bit of fun or perhaps another media outlet playing around with the cameras. Because seriously -- it's got to b…

I actually saw a 2008 Caliber SRT4 today, and was reasonably impressed. I think it falls into the same category as the SRT4 based on the Neon for me, I don't "mind" the base vehicle, but the SRT4 package on either is almost a different car to me. It didn't seem outrageously expensive, just over the $25,000 mark, it was a heckuva "bang for the buck" deal for someone.... it was on a car lot but it was already sold. I wonder if it was an ordered car, it was the first one I have ever seen. The hood wasn't just a single scoop in the middle, I thought the single hood scoop was what they were getting? Cool little interior too!

Here is the latest from Autoblog on the Challangers price. Autoblog.com: One of our readers pointed us to this page over at Dodge's website that contradicted our earlier post about the 2008 Challenger SRT-8's pricing, which was originally announced at $37,995 (including the $675 destination charge). We realize that inflation is a cruel mistress, but a bump in the sticker to $40,095 left us scratching our heads. A few emails back and forth between the people at Chrysler revealed that the SRT-8 was slapped with a $2100 gas-guzzler penalty that accounted for the discrepancy in price. Not a real surprise considering the 425 hp 6.1-liter HEMI V8. As a comparison, however, t…

I was able to check out a Caravan as well as a Town & Country last week. For a more extensive review commenting on it's minivan values, see Empowah's thoughts on it, here. Starting off, I found the design to be decent; lacking, but not a complete turn off as certain other minivans are. The front ends are much more upright than the previous generation and is squared off. Proportionally, the Caravan's fascia is more even, and certainly better looking, than the T&C's with its large grill. The headlights of both are more horizontal and angular, as well as being the most unique from each other, than before. The midsection of the body and greenhouse is probably the cl…

Cerberus Spins Nardelli’s Bankruptcy Talk Turning around Chrysler could be biggest challenge. by Joseph Szczesny (2007-12-24) Link to original story on TCC Cerberus Capital Management LLC had to discard one of its principal operating principles Friday as it scrambled to repair the damage done by some loose talk by chief executive Robert Nardelli. Here is what info Dodge released and was posted on Autoblog As we revealed a few days ago, the first Dodge Challengers to go on sale will only be 2008 SRT8 models. Today we've learned that those 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8s will carry an MSRP of $37,995 (including $675 for destination) and that dealers will begin taking orders for them as early as December 3rd. That's next Monday, people. If you were expecting to have the whole month of December to convince your domestic partner that a Challenger is much more important than Christmas presents, the deadline for that convincing argument has just been moved up. The 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 will be available in three co…

AutoBlog Link Chrysler has released sketches today of three eco-minded concepts it will be unveiling at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January, and the first we'll tell you about is the Chrysler ecoVoyager Concept. The ecoVoyager Concept appears to be a series hybrid, much like the Chevy Volt or Ford Airstream Concept, that uses a lithium-ion battery pack for jaunts of 40 miles or less and a hydrogen fuel-cell range extender to reach distances up to 300 miles away. Power is expected to be in the range of 200 kW total, which Chrysler claims is good for reach 60 mph in around eight seconds. The exterior features an extreme cab forward design creating an arch profile with f…

Former Toyota USA President Jim Press Never Owned A Toyota Or Lexus The Chrysler media blog's got an interview with the new Vice-Chairman of "The New Chrysler," Jim Press. Much of it's a nice little flufferview of the guy who until being snagged by Cerberus, spent thirty years at Toyota, eventually becoming President of Toyota USA and the only non-Japanese ToMoCo board member. Still, at the end of the interview was a little blurb that stood out as shockingly note-worthy: "Press has always loved cars. He built his first go-cart at age seven, got his first car when he was 12. At age 13, he started washing cars at his family's dealership in Kansas. But he said he never …

Dealers finally feel heard at Chrysler By Sharon Silke Carty, USA TODAY link to Original Article Chrysler dealers are "more optimistic than we've been in the last 20 years," says John Schenden, who owns Pro Chrysler Jeep in Denver and serves as a spokesman for dealers. With new leadership in place — including Jim Press, a former top Toyota executive — struggling Chrysler is set to make a rapid recovery, dealers say. October 8 2007: 3:51 AM EDT DETROIT (AP) -- The United Auto Workers put Chrysler LLC on notice that a strike is possible if contract talks stall, a person briefed on the talks said, but a labor expert said the union's action could be a bargaining tactic. The union on Sunday gave Chrysler a 72-hour notice of a potential strike, the person said, but it was unclear exactly whether the notice would end on Tuesday or Wednesday. He is widely respected, has many years of China experience and played a major role in making General Motors a success in China. But Chrysler management in Detroit will have to give him free rein to operate. GM made a big mistake a couple of years ago when it diluted Murtaugh's decision-making authority. Chrysler also will have to give him some help in the form of the right models to sell. During his long run as GM's top man in China, which began in 1996, Murtaugh demonstrated a deep under…

SOURCE: Leftlane News LINK: http://www.leftlanenews.com/dodge-jc49.html OK, this reminds me of a Jeep Grand Cherokee so far, not so good.... WHAT'S WITH THE DASH??!! It looks like a Dodge Caliber's rearranged and turned upside down! Strange!

Seriously I don't get it. Dodge gets the Caliber on a pretty much all new chassis (I know it is shared w/ Mitus but they don't really count since they sell so few cars in the US). Jeep gets 2 versions of this chassis and yet the once highly successful and well selling PT/GT Cruisers are left rotting on the old Neon chassis. What gives? Is Chrysler getting advice from Ford?

It marked the official change in ownership, as the private equity firm, Cerberus Capital Management, formally took…

Chery's U.S. car likely to cost $10,000 Analysts call initial quote of $7,000 too low Link to Original Article @ Detroit Free Press Chrysler is unlikely to roll out a $7,000 car when it brings the first Chery-made American-brand small car to the U.S. market in 2009, U.S. industry analysts said Thursday. Rather than hit the streets with an extremely cheap set of wheels, Chrysler and Chery will more likely beef up the Chery A1 to about $10,000 with features and content expected by American consumers. Shortly after the Chinese government gave the OK to a deal between the two automakers, Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda said his company would begin selling cars made by Chery Aut…

Just got into one of these, silver, with all options except upgraded stereo and sunroof. Interior is cheap...perhaps not as bad as the early build Calibers, but not great. On my short ride from the yard to here, it seemed tight, no rattles (@10k) and the CVT seemed fine in town....I'm going to fill up the gas tank, get a read on mileage in mixed use and update you guys when I've had more seat time....

This is NOT a Chrysler drawing, it's just a cool rendering by a young talent that's floating around the internet, not sure if anybody has seen it.... It's being called an "SRT8 GTX", but it's got nothing to do with a possible production car that I know of....

Well, it's an Eve rap video....but I can't believe there is a new Sebring in a rap video. Obviously Chrysler paid for this. I don't say that because I don't think the Sebring looks good, because it looks pretty sweet with the big rims in the video......I just can't believe a rapper put a $25K car in their video. The rims alone probably cost a quarter of that. Also, Eve is lookin pretty damn hot these days. The car is at the 1:55 mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJ1Y0U8hNYo

After 9 years, Chrysler restores pentastar logo The Chrysler pentastar is back with a new look. Chrysler dusted the star off after nine years in mothballs during the automaker's marriage to Germany's Daimler-Benz. The symbol represents 85 years of Chrysler history and returns as the automaker embarks on a new chapter. The updated version encloses the five-pointed star. It will be used as a corporate logo but not in product ads or at dealerships.

Automotive News - Chrysler group dealers and their lawyers are girding for a fight over the company's threat to yank the franchises of 173 dealerships because of poor sales. A letter this month by J.W. Dimond, Chrysler's national dealer placement manager, said dealers could lose their franchises if they do not meet their "minimum sales responsibility" within 180 days. Most state franchise laws require automakers to give dealers 180 days to correct performance issues before franchises can be terminated. The minimum sales responsibility is a monthly sales target that Chrysler sets for each dealership. Chrysler uses several factors, such as area population and the proximi…

2009 Jeep JT Concept This Skunkworks project could be the only way to get a pickup back in the Jeep lineup July 11, 2007 | BY ALISA PRIDDLE | Link to Original Article @ Car & Driver In the five years of Chrysler’s Mopar skunkworks program, where designers are given carte blanche with existing production vehicles, the biggest idea to make it into mainstream production is the Sky Slider full-length retractable canvas roof on the new 2008 Jeep Liberty. It hailed from the Liberator skunkworks project from almost three years ago. But the informal group of volunteers at the skunkworks could gain major credibility if the automaker decides to go ahead with the Jeep JT (J…

I work over in Auburn Hills near the Chrysler tech center, so it isn't very uncommon to see Chrysler vehicles around with camo on them. Well today coming back to work from lunch, I saw a silver Challenger with some camo on it going the other way. I quickly pulled a u turn in the middle of Opdyke and chased it down! So I finally catch up with him, and we pull up first to the light together. I was taking some pics on my camera phone and the guys inside didn't look too happy about it, but when I threw them a rev their expressions changed. The two guys in it both smiled, and I was like YEAH IM GONNA RACE THE CHALLENGER!! The light turned green, and we both rolled into the th…

The old Chrysler logo is BACK! From Autoblog: In order to celebrate its new found freedom after being divorced from DaimlerChrysler AG, the newly minted Chrysler Corp. will ditch its current winged logo and return to the famous Pentastar logo. The Detroit Free Press is reporting that a senior executive has already emailed some Chrysler employees about the switch back to the old logo after learning about it in a meeting Monday night with veeps and senior management. In addition, the Pentastar will get a redesign to update its look. Apparently this email from a senior exec included a few interesting tidbits, including that Cerberus CEO Stephen Feinberg regrets naming…

Yesterday I grabbed the paper off the front porch, normally I don't bother but this time I picked it up. On the front page read "Manzi car dealership closes" Link To Artcile Clark Chrysler in the next town bought them and will start selling Dodge vehicles in addition to Chrysler and Jeep. I was there the other day...nice place but while friendly, felt like it was forced friendliness. Long story short, this dealer has been part of the community for a long time, and has offered excellent and friendly service. I took my car car there for oil changes and the fuel pump gasket. I remember going there when I was younger when my parents needed a part for our cars. These w…
