Dear 2006, I really enjoyed the Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins Diesel that the Chrysler Corporation let me borrow for a few months. It pulled around a big jeep and a bubble and I went all over America in it. I liked my butt being tosty in the heated seats, and the nav that got us lost (sometimes asking me to make U-turns with a huge trailer) and the Sirius Radio with Howard and Bubba. I wish it was still 2006 sometimes.

For Chrysler, the cornerstone of its proposed alliance with Fiat is for the Italian automaker to supply its domestic partner with smaller, more fuel efficient platforms and drivetrains. It's been assumed that the Fiat 500 would be one of the vehicles Chrysler plans to market in the U.S., but according to a the Wall Street Journal, it may have more than a subcompact up its sleeve. According to the report, Chrysler showed its (troubled) dealers the automaker's future products today in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and along with the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a revised Chrysler 300, a "sporty little sedan" produced by Fiat was in attendance. Chrysler's head of desig…

From Automotive News THE AUTO INDUSTRY BAILOUT Chrysler, CAW reach tentative contract deal Sides hope deal will help automaker avoid bankruptcy, complete Fiat deal David Barkholz The Canadian Auto Workers tentatively agreed tonight to new concessions that will save the struggling automaker $240 million annually and help the carmaker to try to avoid a bankruptcy filing, CAW President Ken Lewenza said at a news conference. In exchange, the CAW got Chrysler and potential partner Fiat SpA to agree to keep its two Chrysler assembly plants open even if bankruptcy is unavoidable, Lewenza said. General Motors and Ford Motor Co., which signed new CAW agreements earl…

Our last AKEOTD was a Chrysler-built tank powerplant, and you'd think it would be impossible to surpass a five-bank, 30-cylinder monster… but the IV-2220 airplane engine does just that. It's the very first Chrysler Hemi! The "2220" stands for its displacement in cubic inches (actually, it was 2,219.35 CI, or just over 36 liters). That's right, an engine with well over a cubic foot of displacement. Oh, but it gets even better! More than ten feet in length, hemispherical heads, aluminum block, single overhead cam, inverted-V configuration, and the power was sent to the propeller reduction gear via the middle of the crankshaft (technically, the IV-2220 was two V8s joined i…

Chrysler is celebrating Earth Day today by unveiling the first four of what will be a fleet of 250 battery powered minivans for the US Postal Service. The U.S.P.S. will be using the vans for variety of duties at locations around the country – including daily home delivery. The vans themselves are based on the concept Town and Country EV that was unveiled last Fall by Chrysler. However, because of the duty cycle used by the Postal Service – which generally amounts to only about 18-20 miles per day on a fixed route – these vehicles are being built without the range extender seen on the concept. However, the electric drive portion of the vehicles, including the motor, elec…

Came across this set of photos today. Here is Miss Belvedere at Ultra-One in Hackettstown, NJ on June 6, 2008. Note partial exterior cleanup of fender, part of the door, and half of the upper and lower grille sections. Side view of the car. A closeup of the cleaned up passenger fender and tire. The fender seems to have survived fairly well. The chrome on the vent window frame looks great, with only one or two pits in the metal. The gas tank on the left looks like it survived and could probably be reused if the car was restored. The leaf springs, as seen on the right, have brittled and snapped. This is true for both sides. The southern…

Link Fiat CEO warns Chrysler unions: cut costs or we walk REUTERS April 15, 2009 By Gilles Castonguay MILAN (Reuters) - Fiat SpA's chief executive, facing a two-week deadline to work out a partnership with Chrysler LLC, warned the troubled U.S. carmaker's unions he would ditch the idea unless they agreed to cut labor costs. In a clear message to U.S. and Canadian unions, Sergio Marchionne told Wednesday's Globe and Mail newspaper a deal on the partnership had only a 50-50 chance of succeeding because of lack of progress in talks with union leaders. "Absolutely we are prepared to walk. There is no doubt in my mind," Marchionne said in an interview posted on t…

I've read on various foums that dealers can't seem to keep the Challenger in stock. Yesterday I went to my local dealer to see if they had anything. In a sea of minivans and Avengers there was not a Challenger to be found. I asked the sales rep how they were selling and he told me as fast as they can get them. They got one in last week and it was on the lot for only two days. I think this is an example of how America cars should be made. They shouldn't be designed to be me-too Japanese wannbes. They should be proud of their heritage and designed and engineered to reflect that. So is this the scenario in your neck of the woods?

While the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee wowed the crowds in New York, what lies beneath could be a key to Chrysler's recovery. The new 3.6-liter V6, called Pentastar after the company's five-pointed-star logo, replaces seven – count 'em, seven – of Chrysler's aging engines, and stands as the outcome of several years of development. The all-aluminum DOHC Pentastar V6, as applied in the new Jeep, offers a 33% increase in power and 11% improvement in the torque department over the engine it replaces, for a husky 280 horsepower and 260 lb-ft -- all while returning 11% better fuel economy and helping Chrysler trim its overall, range-wide CAFE emissions by two miles per gallon by …

One of the weakest points of the base V6-equipped Dodge Challenger SE has been the transmission. Chrysler saddled the SE with the old four-speed automatic instead of the Mercedes designed five-speed used in the V8 models. Chrysler used the occasion of an LX owners meet this weekend to debut a new SE Rallye edition that finally gives the V6 the extra ratio it needs. The Rallye also gets hood and decklid stripes, and five spoke 18-inch wheels. Hopefully Chrysler tightens up the suspension a bit to eliminate some of the floatiness of the SE. The SE Rallye will reportedly run $26,490 after production starts next month. Autoblog

I know that it's still a hideous car and not up to snuff, but I have to say that I feel its interior looks better in black. Or as Chrysler calls it, Dark Slate Grey. I had an opportunity to sit in a Touring model with this colour interior, and although the plastics are still blah and dreary, they somehow take on a more substantial appearance to me when presented in black. And, the leather on the wheel felt great! When I get an opportunity, I will obtain pictures. I went to autotrader.com (lol) to look at the insides in black because I liked it.

The Dodge Viper isn't for everyone. It's raw and brutal, and it takes a certain type of person to appreciate the its outlandish personality. Regardless of whether you like or dislike Dodge's flagship supercar, it's hard to argue against its capabilities. The Viper ACR is unmatched around the Nurburgring, besting the Corvette ZR1 and much more expensive supercars like the Maserati MC12, Pagani Zonda F and Ferrari Enzo. Apparently, it's quite a drag racer too, according to one owner who took out his brand new, bone stock Viper SRT10 Convertible with just 100 miles on the odometer and ripped off a 10.92-second quarter mile. Most media outlets have tested the Viper's 1/4 mi…

Dodge long ago confirmed that a convertible version of the Challenger was not going to happen, blaming the extreme degree to which the chassis would need stiffening if the roof were removed. Then what did members of the Michigan F-Body Association forum spot riding on a trailer around Auburn Hills, MI, home of Chrysler's headquarters? The pics don't lie, and they're telling us that Dodge did produce at least one Challenger Convertible in Lime Green that never saw the light of day. Numerous tuners have created convertible versions of the Challenger already, many of which debuted at last year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas, but an official version was never shown by Dodge. This o…

Dodge's original Li'l Red Express trucks are now in their early 30s, and even building a clone will be an exercise in rust mitigation and parts scavenging. By the time you're done, you'll have spent enough to buy a brand new Ram. Mopar high-performance icon Mr. Norm's is doing what Chrysler can't currently manage, reviving the spirit of the original with a fully modern Red XPress Truck, using the excellent new Ram as a basis. The name has been tweaked and there's no fat-fendered bed, but the general idea is the same. 1978 Dodge Li'L Red ExpressChrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi is the standard fitment, and with 390 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, it makes a good argumen…

After learning that General Motors would be disbanding its High Performance Vehicle Operations team to focus on less performance-oriented projects, our thoughts naturally turned towards Ford's SVT and Chrysler's SRT groups. Would Detroit's other automakers follow GM's lead and kill off their fellow speed divisions? Apparently not. Ford has gone on record stating that the SVT program will continue on in its current capacity and now Chrysler has announced that it will continue to develop SRT versions of its volume sellers. In a posting on Chrysler's Red Letter Dodge blog, Steve Bartoli, Chrysler's vice president for global product planning, had a few choice comments re…

The Ford Mustang has been a dominant force in the sales department well before the last generation Chevy Camaro rode off into the sunset. That changed last month. Ford's iconic pony car has been outsold by the Dodge Challenger by 293 units in February, as the Dodge coupe racked up 3,283 sales during a very challenging month. The Challenger's February victory could be a sign of things to come for the Mustang, as the Blue Oval's most recognizable vehicle is set to get bombarded with more competition coming from the 2010 Camaro. The Camaro, which goes into regular production on March 16, already has over 10,000 pre-orders on the books. The Mustang won't be left for dead, t…

Who needs an 18-cent a gallon gas tax holiday from pandering politicians when you have Chrysler on your side! With gas prices rapidly approaching and exceeding $4 a gallon across the nation, Chrysler is offering up a deal that just might make people averse to the looks of cars like the Chrysler Sebring and Jeep Compass think twice. Between now and June 2, anyone who buys any new Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep vehicle will be able to register for a "Let's Refuel America" card. Once the customer registers a credit card with the program, they will receive a new card that they can use the card at participating gas stations to fuel up their new car or truck. Chrysler LLC and Nissan Motor Co. have postponed plans to share a North American-built small car and a full-sized pickup until they can reduce costs. A third vehicle-sharing project, in which Chrysler will sell a version of Nissan's compact Versa sedan, will continue on schedule, the companies said late Thursday. The automakers blamed the interruption on a worsening economic picture, including dollar-yen exchange rates, that is throwing sales forecasts in doubt. "Because of current economic conditions, Nissan and Chrysler teams working on the two other projects have been asked to ensure that financial objectives for both companies can be met before these two projec…

It is ironic, then, that for the revived company's 50th anniversary, it has thrown its energies into a car that isn't a hot rod, and certainly isn't for gentlemen: a Dodge Viper. Leaving the heart of the beast well enough alone, Hurst merely tinkered with some oily bits, stuffed the thing with leather, and then slathered it in a hue something like a monochrome sunset. Autoblog was invited to be the first to drive the Hurst 50th Anniversary Dodge Viper, and you k…

Responding to word that Chrysler may begin selling off assets and brands soon, Chrysler Vice Chairman and President Tom LaSorda admitted that while the automaker is keen to consider parting with "non-earning assets" or assets that "may be coming due,'" Chrysler "...will not separate the brands from the company." That means that among other things, the struggling automaker may sell tooling for previous-generation vehicles or those on the way out, but it will not part with plants or nameplates. In a post on Chrysler's Firehouse media blog, LaSorda is quoted as saying "What was reported that we're in discussions to sell the Jeep brand is absolutely false... we will not sep…

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot_li..._spied/(page)/1 Chrysler may be teetering on bankruptcy, but product development soldiers on, as evidenced by these spy shots of the successor to one of the company’s most popular and successful models, the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Clearly visible is the new model’s significantly longer wheelbase and rear overhang, suggesting that it has grown a bunch and may accommodate a third-row seat. According to our shooter’s sources, the styling looks a bit like the way-cool Jeep Trailhawk Concept from the 2007 NAIAS, sans the T-bar roof and with normal-sized windows and wheels. Chrysler has launched a marketing campaign that has put thousands of adds in newspapers across the country and a new website that thanks America for helping them through this tough time. America has responded to Chryslers adds. The site is here. The majority of the 70+ comments deride Chrysler and their management. The accuse the company of stealing from the American public. Chrysler to shut down plants for a full month by Chris Shunk on Dec 17th 2008 at 6:28PM Link to Autoblog It's no secret that Chrysler is in the fight of its life, and the Auburn Hills automaker is pulling out all the stops to keep the lights on -- even if it means closing the doors. Chrysler is shuttering all of its plants for one month, beginning December 19. In a short release to the media, Chrysler blamed the continued credit crunch as the main reason for the shutdown, and is trying to better-align its vehicle stock with customer demand. Dealers have notified the Pentastar that they've got plenty of perspective buyers, but an astonishing 20-25% of customers are un…

If you want to read the full text, it's available after the jump. But the condensed version follows. Chrysler is requesting a $7 billion "secured working capital bridge loan" by December 31st, citing the collapse of the light-duty vehicle market, the U.S. financial crisis and the global downturn in the economy as reasons it needs cash. It estimates by the end of the year it will only have $2.5 billion in w…

Rumormill: Chrysler cancels development of Phoenix V6 engines Posted Oct 21st 2008 1:28PM Link to Autoblog The Chrysler rumormill is running at full steam for obvious reasons, and the latest talk surrounds Chrysler and its $3 billion Phoenix V6 engine program. Word on the street is that the project has been canceled, which makes abundant sense if in fact a Chrysler merger is imminent. If a deal to merge Chrysler with either General Motors or Renault/Nissan materializes, both potential mates have V6 engines that are vastly superior to anything nestled under the hood of a Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep. Why would either automaker want to spend $3 billion for something it alrea…

Chrysler dropping AWD on Avenger, Sebring and Caliber Posted Oct 20th 2008 9:27AM Link to AutoBlog If you didn't know all-wheel drive was an available option for the Dodge Avenger, Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Caliber, you're not alone. Only 1.5% of Avenger buyers checked the AWD option box, and the Sebring take rate was an abysmal .7%. The Caliber fared only slightly better at 4.4% for the 2008 model, but that's not nearly enough to keep Chrysler from canceling the option for the 2009 model year. AWD was fast becoming a mainstream option when those models were being developed, but the ability to move all four wheels at once drives down fuel economy. The MSRP goes up,…

They were even more skeptical when the company claimed that it would have an EV on sale by 2010. Wait a minute, everyone wondered, how could Chrysler have caught up with GM, Nissan and other automakers who have been working on EV's for a lot longer? Well, to hear Chrysler tell it, it's not behind at all. It is the first major automaker to actually allow members of the media and dealers to drive its production-intent EV's. The company claims it's been working on EV's for at least two and a half years-or about the same time as the …

From an article over at Allpar: The whole article, centered around the development of the second-generation Neon and PT Cruiser, went further than that into how and why Daimler was allowed to desecrate Chrysler. Going further ... More here: http://www.allpar.com/neon/engineering.html

These videos show the kind of stuff Chrysler needs now more then ever. 1. 2. Commercials that can people will pay attention to. 3. A fuel economy star (who didn't have one of these?) 3.a 4. Now the above cars might be on top of anyones list of 10 best cars, but they did bring profits to Chrysler and thanks to profits we got: Thoughts?

The German premium car group on Wednesday confirmed it was in talks with Cerberus, which bought the majority of Chrysler more than a year ago, about a sale of Daimler’s 19.9 per cent stake in the US company. As we learned this morning from Bob Nardelli's appearance on CNBC, Chrysler LLC is getting into the electric vehicle game and plans to have something on the market by the end of 2010 – the same time GM plans to start selling the 2011 Chevy Volt. The vehicle in question will be one of these three EVs, all of which are powered fully or in part by electrons. The first and perhaps most exciting is the Dodge EV, which is an all-electric sports car like the Tesla Roadster. In fact, Chrysler seems to have taken a few pages from Tesla's playbook, which is evident by the fact that its EV is wearing the body of a Lotus Europa at the moment. Lotus also worked with Tesla on the dev…

Chrysler Design Done with the 'Edge' Going Organic Posted Sep 2nd 2008 9:32AM AutoBlog Link to Article Link to Hi-Res Gallery of ecoVoyager concept Trevor Creed resigned from the position of Chrysler's head of design, and as of today is succeeded by Ralph Gilles, the man who designed the 300C. Since every change at the top comes with a "new sheriff in town" speech -- or at least one-liner -- this is what Gilles had to say: "It's definitely time for a new aesthetic at Chrysler. ... We're done with the 'edge' look." Gilles says he wants the Pentastar's cars to look more "organic." This being art, however, that could really mean anything. For concrete exampl…

Two weeks ago, a good friend of mine needed a new car...quickly. He's not "car" guy, so overall performance is not a huge issue. Style, comfort, features and price are the top issues. Additionally, used cars were not an option. After a positive experience with his old 2001 Corolla, along with his sister's good (current) ownership experience with a 2002 Corolla, Toyotas are held in high esteem. He was initially fixated on a 2009 Camry...but the price was just a bit north of his $18,000 budget. So we did lots of online searching for pics of the kinds of cars he needed to be looking at. We then drove by several dealers (late on a Friday night) so he could see cars in…

For once, I'm not going to completely bash Chrysler, just going to bitch for a minute. I want a Wrangler, have for years, I've been going through all the scenarios that will permit me to buy a new one next spring, and weighing possible other purchases, the FJ Cruiser when talking new, and a number of small, convertible SUVs when talking used. An Amigo would be my first choice, but I have a soft spot for the Tracker/Sidekick and would think hard about a RAV4 or Sportage vert. Back to the Wrangler, specifically where Jeep is going to lose my sale. Jeep offers 3 models of the Wrangler 2-door, the X, Sahara and Rubicon. MyGig is a must, and its only available on the t…

Reuters Story DETROIT (Reuters) - Chrysler LLC has drawn interest from international and North American parties for the possible sale of its high-performance Dodge Viper sports car line, Vice Chairman and President Jim Press told reporters on Wednesday. Chrysler in late August announced it was exploring the sale of the Viper sports car business as part of its effort to generate cash and ride out the deepening U.S. auto industry downturn. The Viper is a low-volume V10-powered sports car first produced in 1992. "We have been approached by outside individuals who want to work with us to buy the asset and sustain Viper going forward," Press told reporters after an Au…

It's Electrifying! Chrysler to Show Dealers Three EVs with Production in Mind Posted Sep 3rd 2008 12:31PM AutoBlog Link to Article Link to Gallery While everyone is aware of what GM, Honda and Toyota have been up to when it comes to fuel-saving technology, Chrysler has been playing it close to the chest. The Auburn Hills-based automaker, however, will show its dealers three new all-electric cars at the end of this month that are said to be production capable. Jim Press, the Chrysler exec who came from rival and current hybrid-leader Toyota, added that Chrysler's future platforms were being designed with electrification in mind and that is still has access to t…

Chrysler plans for the future Posted Sep 4th 2008 cnet.com Link to Article At the Western Automotive Journalists' dinner this week, Jim Press, President of Chrysler, told me exactly what I wanted to hear. When I asked how he plans on differentiating the Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep brands, he put it this way: Jeep will remain an iconic off-roader, with no soft-roaders spoiling the brand; Dodge will be the performance brand, but will also be a volume play; and Chrysler focuses on luxury, competing with brands like Acura. Maybe this type of brand differentiation just fits conventional wisdom, but it seems like a smart plan to me. Yet, in speaking more generally about the…

Kowalski test drove one recently too.... Here's my photos of the first & fourth Challenger I've seen in the flesh. (or as Balthy would say: "in the steel") This one was on the back of a car carrier being pulled by a Peterbilt 379. About 15min. & 5 miles before I saw the MB 500SEC for the 1st time. And here's the Orange one that I see ALL over Lowell.

Craig Trudell Automotive News August 22, 2008 - 4:38 pm ET Chrysler LLC has launched production of the hybrid versions of its Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUVs, set to go on sale this fall. Chrysler's Newark, Del., assembly plant started building the SUVs this week. The plant is Chrysler's first to build vehicles with its gasoline-electric Two Mode hybrid system. The hybrid system called for new assembly processes to install a 300-volt battery and other components that Chrysler is using for the first time. "The implementation of this new manufacturing process was done intelligently, with both quality and cost in mind," Joe Ozdowy, Newark's plant manager…

Posted Aug 22nd 2008 9:28AM by Jeremy Korzeniewski Filed under: Minivans/MPVs, Humor What would happen if an old Plymouth Horizon mated with a Plymouth Voyager? See above. Despite the fact that Chrysler used to offer its minivans with two different wheelbases, this is a vehicle that was fortunately never released out of the factory doors. Our guess is that the owner, like us, never really cared for those old non-powered sliding doors anyway. Why not just get rid of 'em completely? Our favorite view of the bus shows that there's nearly as much front-overhang as there is metal between the axles. In all seriousness, the work that went into cutting this sucker in third…

Can Chrysler survive? The frailest of Detroit's automakers has been in private hands for a year. CEO Bob Nardelli badly needs a hit if the company is to endure. The Illness When the U.S. economy catches a cold, Detroit gets pneumonia, or so the old saying used to go. These days it's double pneumonia, and the business is on life support. Besides being caught in a cyclical downturn brought on by the subprime lending crisis, the U.S. auto industry is going through a secular transformation caused by the spike in oil prices. Goodbye, high-profit pickups and SUVs; hello, breakeven (or worse) small cars. All of the old Big Three are suffering, but none like Chrysler. …

Analyst: Chrysler, not GM, in biggest danger The Associated Press July 3, 2008, 3:58PM ET Link to article Faced with soaring gas prices, a sputtering economy and a rapid U.S. market shift away from trucks, the U.S. auto industry's weakest player, Chrysler, may have to file for bankruptcy or sell its storied Jeep and Dodge Ram brands as early as next year, JPMorgan said Thursday. But rivals GM and Ford are likely to get through the rough patch and turn a profit in 2010. JPMorgan auto analyst Himanshu Patel dismissed the possibility of an imminent bankruptcy at GM, saying in a conference call with investors and media that such fears "are completely overblown." Th…

The Chrysler Sebring has been a major league disappointment since its introduction in 2007, but execs at Chrysler headquarters have promised that a new, better midsize sedan is on the way. The photo to the right is not that magical new Chrysler, but is what appears to be a warmed-over version of the Sebring we already have. The most obvious change arrives at the hood, where the Sebring's ungainly washboard ribbing is replaced by a smooth surface. There is significant camouflage covering the front bumper and lower fascia, but due to some un-kept grass, we can't see any details. The Chrysler experts over at Allpar say that the updates will mainly improve aerodynamics and re…

Unloved as they are, let's give Chrysler's K Car its due. Thirty years ago, the K represented a sea change in the Pentastar lineup. Not only did the K and its derivatives return Chrysler to the black, the architecture proved versatile enough to underpin basically the entire lineup, from minivans to LeBarons to turbocharged Daytonas. Southern California now has an official K Car club – fitting, as that's likely the only place you could find an early '80s Chrysler without lots of rust. Club membership is open to the entire swath of cars that share this similar architecture, known as the "EEK" models, so you won't get kicked out for showing up in a Caravelle instead of an Ar…
