After a long run of teaser images, Volvo revealed their new EX90 7-seat, all-electric SUV in Stockholm, Sweden today. This is the first in Volvo's goal of releasing one new fully electric car each year. By 2030, Volvo aims to sell only fully electric cars and be climate-neutral by 2040. That climate neutral pledge starts with the EX90 and its factories in the Charleston, South Carolina and China. Both production facilities are slated to be climate-neutral. Initially offered as with a twin-motor all-wheel drive and a 111kWh battery, the EX90 can produce up to 496 horsepower and 671 lb.-ft of torque in the performance edition. A milder version offered with 408 horsepo…

Volvo has stated that two-thirds of consumers now consider a brand's environmental policies as a critical factor when purchasing luxury products according to a recent study (Source: Vogue Business Index, Winter 2020). This same percentage of buyers has indicated that they would like to see carbon labelling on products as a way to provide greater transparency of the companies impact on products and materials (Source: The Carbon Trust, 2020 YouGov Survey) This means that a company needs to take into account actively sourcing high-quality, sustainable and responsibly-sourced materials as they strive to build luxury products. This coincides with Volvo launch of the C…

Volvo is the first company to team up with Google to produce an Android based infotainment system. The new system will debut in the soon to be unveiled Volvo XC40 Electric. The new system, called Android Automotive OS features all the expected integrations like Android Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store. App installs will work exactly as they do on everyday Android phones. One of the advantages of the new OS is that it is able to do over the air updates for security and feature upgrades in the future. the system will also allow Google Maps to interact with vehicle safety system sensors, including radar and camera, to keep driving conditions in Maps up …

Volvo has released some teaser images of the upcoming Volvo XC40 EV crossover. This will be the brand's first full EV as the other EVs the Volvo has released are going to its Polestar brand. What we did know was that Volvo's first EV was going to be based on an existing model. Volvo is expecting to make the XC40 EV one of the safest vehicles ever built. The XC40 rides on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that was designed with multiple different modes of propulsion in mind. It's the same platform found in the Polestar 2. As it was planned from the start to be capable of being an EV, it wasn't that hard to convert it over from gasoline. Like most EVs, the b…

Volvo is looking to expand, and not just in volume. They are looking to add models to their current crossover lineup at the top and bottom of the range. At the bottom could be a new XC20 (If we follow the pattern of XC40 and XC60). This car would compete directly with the Audi Q2 and BMW X1 and would ride on a shortened version of the company's CMA (Compact, Modular Architecture) Platform that underpins the Volvo XC40, Polestar 2, and a few Chinese branded vehicles. This model is most likely to be the next one introduced to the Volvo lineup. It is possible that this car may be offered as a pure electric vehicle only. At the top end could be a new XC100. Buil…

If you're a diplomat, politician, or evil genius in need of protection when you are out and about, a new option just arrived on your shopping list. Volvo has just released the XC90 Armored, an SUV that looks normal, but isn't. Volvo worked on the XC90 Armored for about two years, aiming for a protection rating of VPAM VR8, the second highest rating possible. Decoding that rating, the VR8 means that the XC90 has 360 degree ballistic resistance. However, it also provides explosive resistance too. Starting off as a standard Volvo XC90 T6 AWD Inscription, the SUV heads to Bremen, Germany to complete the process of armoring. High-strength steel and glass are a…

Volvo is planning on releasing an all-electric version of its Volvo XC40 crossover sometime later this year. This will be the first pure EV under the Volvo brand and the second one in the automaker group after the Polstar 2 that was shown at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year. In addition to the all-electric version, Volvo will reportedly be offering a 3-cylinder plug-in hybrid version of the XC40, though no official specs have been announced yet. Two variations would be offered, at T4 Twin-Engine and T5 Twin-Engine. While the Polestar 2 is aiming for a 275 mile range, don't expect similar range from the taller and flatter XC40, but somewhere in the 225 are…

Volvo has announced that all 2020 Volvos will come with an electronically limited top speed of 180 kph or 112 mph. The move is in pursuit of its Vision 2020 goal to have no fatalities or serious injuries in a new Volvo by 2020. The company identified three remaining gaps in its plan, one of which being speeding. Volvo says that the problem with high speeds is that above a certain point, in-car safety technology is no longer sufficient to prevent serious injury. The company is also investigating a smart speed control system that will use GPS and geofencing to limit top speed around schools and hospitals. The two other gap areas Volvo has identified are intoxicati…

Volvo introduced the mildest of mild refreshes today on the XC90 while simultaneously announcing refreshes on their T8 and T6 Twin Engine lines. The new powertrain is said to offer up to 15% fuel saving and emissions reduction in real-world driving. The new system offers brake-by-wire energy recovery to recover kinetic energy while driving. The T8 Plug-in hybrid comes with up to 420 horsepower and a 15% increase in range. The T6 gets a similar 15% range boost. In addition to the T8 and T6, Volvo will be introducing a range of mild-hybrid engines, now indicated with a new B5 badge. The B-badged cars are expected to become Volvo's new standard powertrain over tim…

Auto shows tend to be the place that the majority of consumers get to poke around a number of new vehicles. So it seems a bit odd that Volvo will not have any vehicles for their LA Auto Show exhibit. What gives? “By calling the trade show Automobility LA, the organisers have recognised the disruption affecting our industry. We want to demonstrate that we got the memo and start a conversation about the future of automobility. So instead of bringing a concept car, we talk about the concept of a car. We will not win the ‘car of the show’ award this year, but we are comfortable with that. Because this is not a car show.” said Mårten Levenstam, responsible for product stra…

Back in the summer, Volvo opened its first plant in South Carolina where it would be producing the all-new S60 sedan. The original plan was to export half of the S60s built to other markets. But the current trade dispute between the U.S. and China has caused Volvo to change their plans. Anders Gustafsson, president of Volvo Cars USA said at a meeting of the Automotive Press Association in Detroit that the automaker is changing the focus of the South Carolina factory to build S60s for the U.S. market. A small number of S60s will still be exported to Europe. “We’ll go at this change not with a smile, but we know what we need to do. We have a global manufacturing s…

Care By Volvo was one of the first new car subscription services to launch. It offered a buyer an XC40 with a yearly allowance of 15,000 miles; maintenance, insurance, and a concierge service for either $600 or $700 per month for 24 months. But the service had some hiccups with various issues dealing with paperwork and not hearing back from dealers. "The process was very, very stretched. We have learned that the process needs to be smoother, and also the process related to insurance and all the rules in all the states in this beautiful country ... we have learned a lot," said Volvo's North American CEO, Anders Gustafsson to Roadshow. A key example is having a l…

Volvo's Cross Country lineup provides a middle ground between standard wagons and SUVs by combining elements of the two. You get the space and fuel economy of a wagon, while getting the off-road capability of an SUV. We've been waiting for Volvo to introduce a version of their recently unveiled V60 wagon. Today, Volvo did just that. The V60 Cross Country takes the standard V60 and raises ground clearance by 2.95 inches. There is also a set of lower body cladding. The U.S. version will get T5 (turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder), while European models get the choice of either the T5 or D4. Power goes to all four wheels via an all-wheel drive system. Hill-descent control a…

Polestar has revealed new details as to how it plans on selling their vehicles in the U.S. As we have previously reported, Polestar will be using an online system for customers to do research, configure, and order their vehicle. They'll also have the choice of either purchasing a vehicle outright or doing a subscription model where insurance and maintenance is covered in the payment. But as Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar admits in a statement, "many people want to physically see a car before ordering." That's where Polestar Spaces come into play. These will be franchised by dealers and allow customers to check out the cars and learn more from product information sp…

Geely was planning to make Volvo a publicly traded company by the end of the year. Earlier in the year, the company hired financial advisors to see if it would be possible. But over the weekend, the Financial Times reported that Geely has scrapped those plans. “We’ve come to the conclusion that the timing is not optimal for an IPO right now,” Volvo Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson told Reuters. The on-going trade war between the U.S. and China, and concerns about something similar happening between the U.S. and Europe are listed as the main concerns. But a source revealed that Geely boss Li Shufu thought Volvo needed to make bigger endroads into China before go…

Volvo is shifting production of XC60s destined for the U.S. from China to Europe in an effort to avoid a 25 percent tariff on Chinese imports. "We will, of course, reshuffle here and take XC60s for the U.S. from our factory in Europe, and let China produce for other markets," Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson told Reuters. Samuelsson went on to say that the shift has already begun. Earlier this month, the Trump administration slapped a 25 percent tariff on $34 billion in Chinese imports, including Volvo's XC60 and S90. Unlike the XC60, the S90 is only built in China, leaving it in a difficult place. In turn, the Chinese government increased tariffs on imported U.S…

Polestar is beginning to drop hints on their next model, the 2 which is expected to debut sometime next year. Autocar spoke with Polestar COO Jonathan Goodman at this weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Goodman said the Polestar 2 will be the brand's entry level model and compete directly with the Tesla Model 3. "That will represent the lower ‘bookend’ of our showroom range and, for now, it should give us as much access to the volume end of the EV market as we need," said Goodman. Autocar says the 2's design will closely follow the 40.2 concept shown a couple years back. The report also says that the 2 will have up to 400 horsepower and a max range of 350…

The next-generation Volvo XC90, due out in 2021 as a 2022 model will follow in the S60's footsteps by not offering any sort of diesel option. Instead, Volvo will be offering a range of hybrids and electric-only powertrains. “We have to prioritise – we cannot do everything. So if we want to be faster in electrification we can’t say yes to everything. That’s why [the S60] has no diesel alternative and we are not planning to have a diesel alternative in any new cars. The XC90 will follow this,” said Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson to Auto Express. Volvo's next-generation SPA2 platform will underpin the XC90, which is designed to accept both electric and hybrid powertrai…

During the reveal of the 2018 Volvo S60 last week, it was announced that the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered would be offered in "extremely limited quantities." The automaker wasn't lying as there will be 20 models up for grabs in the U.S. that will be available only through the Care by Volvo app. The S60 T8 Polestar Engineered packs 415 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque, along with Öhlins suspension, large Brembo brakes, and various interior enhancements. It will also be the most the expensive model in the Care by Volvo program, carrying a monthly fee of $1,100 per month. Should be noted that monthly fee does include maintenance and insurance. If you're inte…

The 2019 Volvo S60 marks a few milestones for the Swedish automaker. For one, Volvo can finally say goodbye to the final remnants of its Ford ownership. The S60 is also the first model for the brand to be built in the U.S. at a new plant in South Carolina. It will also be the first Volvo to not offer a diesel engine. At first glance, the S60 looks almost the same as the larger S90 sedan. But get a bit closer and there are some major differences. For example, the 'Thor's Hammer' daytime running lights are closer to the grille than on the S90. The bumpers are much more aggressive and the doors feature deeper stamps and creases. Compared to the outgoing S60, the n…

It was thought for a time that Volvo's first electric vehicle would be a compact hatchback that took some design ideas from the Concept 40.2. Then we heard that the XC40 would be the first electric vehicle. Now we have gotten some clarification. “It’s not a secret any more that the first full electric Volvo is on its way with the XC40 coming. It will arrive very soon after the Polestar 2. That is the first to come that’s not exotic. We’ll start with XC40 and then on it will come step after step into our model range. The next car will be the next-generation XC90," said Volvo design chief Thomas Ingenlath. The Polestar 2, a midsize sedan is expected to go into pro…

Next week, Volvo will unveil the next-generation S60 sedan at their new plant in South Carolina. To whet our appetite, Volvo has dropped some teaser photos and information on the new Polestar Engineered tuning pack that will debut on the S60. Only available on the T8 Twin Engine, the pack increases output from 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque to 415 and 494 respectively. Volvo says the changes to the ECU improves fuel consumption and "refines the automatic gear selection." For the chassis, the Polestar Engineered tuning pack introduces recalibrated multilink front and rear suspensions, adjustable front strut, adjustable Öhlins shock absorbers, and a set…

Care By Volvo is a very intriguing option for buyers. For just $600 or $700 month, you can get into XC40 with insurance, maintenance, replacement of wear items, telematics-based concierge service. The subscription lasts 24 months and provides a yearly allowance of 15,000 miles, along with the option to swap into a new model after 12 months. But Roadshow reports that Volvo had some issues with getting Care By Volvo up and running. Readers tell the outlet they have been waiting on their vehicles with barely any updates coming from Volvo. Forum and Reddit posts are expressing the same thing with some reporting hold-ups due to paperwork. There is some good news for…

Within the next few weeks, Volvo will unveil the all-new S60 sedan. It will be the first model in Volvo's lineup to not be offered with a diesel engine. “Our future is electric and we will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines. We will phase out cars with only an internal combustion engine, with petrol hybrid versions as a transitional option as we move towards full electrification. The new S60 represents the next step in that commitment,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars in a statement. This news isn't that surprising when you back at comments made by Samuelsson in 2016. Starting next year, Volvo will begin r…

Volvo is finishing up an immense product rollout that began with the XC90 only a few years ago. So what's next on the Swedish automaker's to-do list? As we reported last July, Volvo is gearing up for an electrification offensive beginning in 2019 with five new electric vehicles and a number of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. Because of this, the automaker isn't planning to launch like a convertible or a rumored SUV coupe. “It would be nice to have a convertible or a coupe. It’s the cream on the cake but you don’t need it to survive,” said Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo's Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) boss. “We cover 98% of the market with our current por…

While Polestar isn't expected to begin production on their first model, the 600 horsepower Polestar 1 coupe until 2019, they will soon be opening the order books for certain markets. Today, Polestar announced the launch markets for the 1 coupe. They include, United States China Germany The Netherlands Sweden The company explained the reason for picking these markets first was due in part to the level of interest expressed by possible buyers in those countries. Since October, buyers have been able to register their interest via the Polestar site. The plan is to change these over to orders when Polestar opens the order books early next yea…

We've long suspected that the next-generation 60 Series family would look quite similar to the larger 90 series. After seeing the XC60 and upcoming V60 wagon, we seem to be on the money. But what about the upcoming S60? Thanks to Swedish magazine Teknikens Värld, we have gotten our first look. The publication got their hands on a photo showing various Volvo vehicles in a garage, most likely a test center of some kind. Front and center in the picture is the new S60. The overall profile matches up with the S90 sedan, but Volvo's designers have made some changes to make the S60 standout. The window line along the side has been raised slightly towards to the rear to give…

During the press reveal of the Volvo V60 earlier this week, Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson and his colleagues took the time to answer some questions concerning the future of the Swedish brand. Road & Track jotted down some of the interesting bits from this. End of the road for Gas Engines Volvo made a surprising announcement last year with plans to electrify their entire lineup beginning in 2019. This includes mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles. It seems this plan will also mark the end of development of gas engines. The current line of turbo and twin-charged engines represent the last new gas engines from the brand. Instead, Volvo will add more…

Most automakers tend to hold a debut of a new product at some extravagant venue. For the new V60, Volvo chose the driveway of a typical suburban family home in Sweden. Pragmatic? Sure, but in a way it works for next member of 60 series family. As we suspected from spy photos and was revealed by leaked photos last week, the 2019 V60 is a smaller version of the V90. All of the traits are there such as a minimalist body design, headlights featuring Thor's hammer, and L-shaped taillights that extend upward along the tailgate. Compared to the V90, the V60 is about seven inches shorter in overall length and two inches short in wheelbase. But compared to the current V60, the…

Next month at the Geneva Motor Show, Volvo will be showing off the new V60 wagon. At least that was the plan. Only a few hours after Volvo dropped a teaser video, a couple pictures of the supposed model made their way online. The pictures, which first appeared on Bosnian site AutoMotoSvijet have been since taken down, but not before various other sites grabbed copies. As we suspected from spy shots last month, the new V60 looks like a downsized V90 with a clean profile and taillights that extend upward on the tailgate. We're expecting a similar interior design found in the XC60, along with the choice of the T5, T6, and T8 plug-in hybrid powertrains. Volvo will b…

Last summer, Volvo made a stunning announcement as it plans to electrify its entire lineup. This plan includes 5 electric vehicles, two from Polestar and the rest from Volvo. We've already know about Polestar EVs plans (a midsize sedan and SUV), but we haven't heard anything concerning Volvo. That changed this week as a report from Autocar says Volvo's first EV will be a compact hatchback that will draw inspiration from the 40.2 concept shown in 2016. This makes some sense as the 40.2 concept used Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that was built with electrification in mind. The 40.2 concept had an overall range of 217 miles. But when Henrik Green, Vol…

We've known for some time that Volvo was working on updating their 60 Series models, but haven't seen either one pop up in spy photos. But this week, a spy photographer has given us our first look at the new V60 wagon. Volvo's typical camouflage treatment is on show with a swirly covering and plastic pieces fitted to various body panels. We can tell that the new V60 looks to follow in the footsteps of the larger V90 with a similar profile and front end. It appears this model is a T8 Plug-in Hybrid due to the opening on the left front fender. Some reports say Volvo could debut the new V60 at the Geneva Motor Show in March. We'll keep you posted. Possibly the biggest news when Volvo unveiled their XC40 crossover back in September was the 'Care by Volvo' subscription service. For a flat-rate fee, you would get an XC40, insurance, maintenance, and the ability to get into another XC40 after 12 months. We now have more details about this service for the U.S. Pricing for the service begins at $600 per month for an XC40 Momentum AWD or $700 for an R-Design AWD (prices don't include tax and registration fees). The subscription includes an annual allowance of 15,000 miles covering tire and wheel damage, replacement of wear-and-tear items such as windshield wipers, all factory-scheduled maintenance, insurance provided …

Volvo an Uber announced a deal where Uber will purchase 24,000 Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid SUVs over 3 years to expand Uber's self-driving fleet. Uber has been testing self-driving vehicles in Pittsburgh since Autumn 2016 with human supervision in the driver seat. Over 100 such vehicles are currently in operation in the city. The deal marks the largest single order of vehicles for Geely owned Volvo. While no financial details were disclosed, the minimum retail price for an XC90 T8 Hybrid is $64,950. Volvo expects the profit margin per vehicle to be on par with traditional sales through a dealership network. Uber chose the XC90 because much of the hardware to add …

When Polestar announced their first model, the 1, they said it would be available through a subscription for either two or three years. But it seems that you might be able to buy one outright if you have the cash. "I think it would be very difficult to me to turn around to a customer who walks in with a 'hundred-and-x thousand dollars' and says, 'I want to buy one.' I think I'm not particularly convinced that I'll be turning them away and saying, 'Absolutely not, sir or madam. You have to have it on subscription.' I think subscription is going to be a key part of it," said Jonathan Goodman, chief operating officer of Polestar to Roadshow. "I can't see us being a…

It was just a few months ago that Volvo announced their in-house performance arm, Polestar would be spun off to become a standalone brand. It would focus on building high-performance electric vehicles, though as we reported in the rumorpile back in the summer, their first model would be a plug-in hybrid coupe. That rumor was right on the money as the brand unveiled the Polestar 1 at an event in Shanghai. The Polestar 1 looks to be the production model of the Volvo Concept Coupe shown a few years back. The front end is very reminiscent of recent Volvo models with a concave grille and Thor's Hammer headlights. The rear end echoes the Concept Coupe with C-Shaped tailligh…

Over a year later after Volvo teased us with the 40.1 and 40.2 concepts, they have introduced the first model in the 40-Series family, the 2018 XC40. While the overall design of the XC40 bears a strong resemblance to the XC60 and XC90, Volvo's designer staff wanted to make the XC40 have some design traits of its own. They include an upswept rear side window. a racier take on the 'Thor's Hammer' headlights, plastic cladding running along the bottom of the vehicle, and the choice of a black or white contrasting roof. The 'similar but different' theme continues inside as the XC40 will come with a 12.3-inch display for the instrument cluster and 9-inch t…

Next week, Volvo will debut their new XC40 crossover. They have already released a teaser video showing only small snippets of the models. However, one of Volvo's regional offices didn't get the memo to only post the teaser video. Volvo Hungary accidentally released a video showing the XC40 in full. The video has since been taken down, but various outlets have gotten screen caps of it. The production version almost mirrors the 40.1 concept with the same boxy shape. Inside, the XC40 appears to be slightly more casual in terms of design when compared to the XC60 and 90. At least the XC40 retains the large touchscreen. The XC40 is an important vehicle for Volvo. As…

Almost a month ago, Volvo made the announcement that it will be spinning off Polestar into its own automaker focusing on high-performance electric vehicles. At the time, plans on products would be announced this fall. But Autocar has learned from a source about one of those projects. The first model is expected to be a coupe, sporting a plug-in hybrid powertrain with 600 horsepower. While the original announcement said the new brand would focus on electric vehicles, sources at Volvo and Polestar say the brand will also focus on high-performance plug-in hybrid powertrains. As we have reported previously, Polestar will share “technological and engineering” efforts with…

Volvo stunned the world last Wednesday when they announced beginning in 2019, they would begin to phase out gas only vehicles and replacing them with hybrid and electric models. The company claims this strategy heralds "a new chapter in automotive history". This move is an about-face for the Swedish automaker. Previously, the company said electric vehicles didn't make a great business case. But there is more to this decision than meets the eye. Automotive News reports that a key reason for Volvo's electrification plans comes down to the increasing regulation on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in three key markets; Europe, China, and U.S. Tim Urquhart, principal analy…

Volvo made a stunning announcement this morning as it plans to equip all of their vehicles with an electric motor beginning in 2019. “This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car. Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1 million electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it,” said Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson in a statement. Volvo is planning to launch five EVs between 2019 and 2021 - two of those coming from Polestar . They'll be complemented by a range of mild-hybrid with 48-volt electric systems and plug-in hybrid models. “This is about the customer. People increas…

The announcement made today confirms a rumorpile report from last week about Polestar working on a lineup of high-performance electric vehicles. “Polestar will be a credible competitor in the emerging global market for high performance electrified cars. With Polestar, we are able to offer electrified cars to the world’s most demanding, progressive drivers in all market segments,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. The brand will share “technological and engineering” efforts with Volvo. Polestar will …

Polestar is best known for building fast Volvos, but they could strike out on their own with building performance electric vehicles. Auto Express has learned that Polestar will use Volvo's SPA Scalable Product Architecture) and CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platforms for their new vehicles. The first one, which is expected to be shown sometime this year will use SPA. According to a source, Geely (parent company of Volvo and Polestar) wants to create a line-up of brands that could rival the likes the of Volkswagen Group. Polestar is being positioned as the performance brand and Geely wants them to expand their lineup along the lines of AMG - building bespoke…

Last week, Chinese automaker and owner of Volvo, Geely announced that it would be acquiring just under 50 percent of shares into Malaysian automaker Proton and a majority stake in Lotus. For those who don't know, Proton is the current owner of Lotus since 1996. Final terms of this are still being worked on and are expected to be announced towards the end of July, but that isn't stopping many from wondering what Lotus could bring to the table. Lotus has a well-known reputation for building sharp handling vehicles along with providing engineering expertise to various automakers on fine-tuning suspensions. Examples include the Lotus Carlton (during GM's ownership), Isuz…

Volvo announced today at the Shanghai Auto Show that it would be building its first electric vehicle in China beginning in 2019. The model will use the CMA platform that is being jointly developed by Volvo and its parent company Geely. According to Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson, it will be an all-new model but declined to say what type of vehicle it would be - crossover, sedan, or hatchback. "It will be a body style that we expect will have global acceptance and we will start production with the battery-only version only, with internal combustion variants that could follow later," Samuelsson told Automotive News. As for why Volvo has decided on Chi…

When Volvo announced that all of their vehicles would be powered by only four-cylinder, it caught a lot of people off guard, including Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson. Speaking with various media at the Geneva Motor Show, Samuelsson revealed that he wasn't sold on this idea. But since then, he has been convinced. “Two years ago you could ask me that, and probably I would have had to answer a different way. But today, I’m absolutely convinced," said Samuelsson. “The reaction of that decision has been very positive. Even in the US – the XC90 was even truck of the year in the US, a big SUV with a four-cylinder engine: that’s a good indication that we took the right…

As Volvo finishes up the launch of their 90 series lineup, the company's focus will turn to the 40 series lineup. Speaking with Autocar, Volvo's R&D boss Henrik Green revealed the XC40 compact crossover will launch this fall. The model is expected to look somewhat similar to the Concept 40.1 shown last year and utilize the all new CMA platform that was jointly worked on by Volvo and their parent company, Geely. Down the road, Volvo plans on launching other versions of the 40 Series such as a hatchback. Also launching this year is the second-generation XC60. Volvo has been busy filing trademark applications in Europe. Swedespeed reports that Volvo has applications filed for P5, P6, P8, P9, and P10 with European Union Intellectual Property Office. The applications say the names would be used for “vehicles and conveyances; Electric vehicles.” This leads Sweedspeed to speculate the names could be used on Volvo's current models to designate an electric version - S90 P6 for example. Last year, Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson said they plan on launching their first electric vehicle by 2019. Meanwhile, in the U.S., Volvo has filled out trademark applications V20 and V30. There isn't much information with these applications, say…

For more than half of a century, the best-selling vehicle in Sweden wore a Volvo badge. But in 2016, this changed as the best selling model wasn't a Volvo. BBC News reports that the Volkswagen Golf was the best-selling model in Sweden in 2016. According to data from the country's carmakers' association, the Golf made up 5.9 percent of new car sales in 2016. The Volvo V70, S90, and V90 made up 5.7 percent. It should be noted Volvo as a brand is still the top seller in Sweden with 21.5 percent of total vehicle sales (about 1 in 5 vehicles). Volkswagen only makes up 15.7 percent of total sales. This isn't the first time that Volkswagen has knocked Volvo off …

Previous Page Next Page Volvo is stretching the S90 lineup - literally. The Swedish automaker announced today two long-wheelbase S90 models for the Chinese market. Both models ride on a wheelbase that is 4.7-inches longer than standard S90 - 120.5 vs. 115.8 inches. The first model is simply a stretched version of the S90 called the S90 Long Wheelbase. The second model is the S90 Excellence which stands as the most luxurious vehicle Volvo has offered. The most noticeable feature is Volvo's Lounge Console. First shown in a concept last year, the console takes the place of the front passenger seat and provides a number of features to the pe…

Back in the late-nineties, Volvo took a page out of Subaru's playbook by taking one their wagons and making a bit of more capable off-road. The end result was the V70 Cross Country and would become one Volvo's iconic models the next two decades. Now the successor the V70 has gotten its own Cross Country variant. Today, Volvo revealed the 2017 V90 Cross Country. Starting with the basic V90, Volvo lifted it 2.36 inches to give it an overall ground clearance of 8.2 inches. The next member of the Volvo 90 Series family, the S90, will go on sale next month in the U.S. Anders Robertson, product manager for the 90 series at Volvo Car USA tells Automotive News the company expects to sell about 15,000 S90s during the first full year of sales. For some perspective, the segment that the S90 competes in - the midsize luxury sedan - sells around 300,000 vehicles per year. That means Volvo is hoping to capture about five percent of the segment sales. That sales goal seems a bit small, but there is some reason for it. The S80, Volvo's previous flagship sedan only sold 1,887 models last year. The best sales came in 2007 when 12,347 S80 sedans were s…

Despite the diesel scandal that has engulfed Volkswagen, the fuel is still going strong in Europe. But that could be changing with stricter emission standards coming and regulators starting to keep a keen eye on automakers. Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson believes with these changes, many automakers will switch from diesel to hybrid vehicles. “It is a very attractive alternative to a diesel engine. It offers much lower CO2 levels but more or less the same performance in both horsepower and torque. On cost, I would say that within a couple of years we will see a crossover, the diesel getting more expensive and the [hybrid system] going down,” said Samuelsson. “Diesels w…

If you were hoping for Volvo to do something smaller than the upcoming 40 Series (C30 hatchback), then you'll be disappointed with this news. Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson tells Car and Driver they're aren't planning to anything below the 40 Series. “It’s very hard to make money in that segment right now . . . of course we could downsize [our CMA architecture, which underpins the 40-series], but that is not on the agenda,” said Samuelsson. Volvo has played in this arena before with the C30 hatchback. But the model never really made an impact on the marketplace. Over the course of eight years, Volvo only sold around 200,000 C30s. Volvo is in the midsts of overhauling their lineup with the 90 Series nearing completion, and attention being turned towards the 40 and 60 Series. As Car and Driver notes during the press introduction of the 40 Series concepts, a video was shown demonstrating the flexibility of the CMA platform. Various body styles such as convertible were shown. This got Car and Driver thinking, was Volvo considering adding more variants down the line on the CMA platform? Peter Mertens, Volvo’s head of research and development said CMA could sit underneath a coupe or convertible. But right now, Mertens said Volvo is focused on their core models for this and the SPA platform. At t…

Volvo has unveiled two new concepts that show what the future of their small cars will look like. Called the 40 Series concepts, Volvo says these show what is in store in terms of design and technology. The 40.1 is likely the preview to the XC40 crossover and the 40.2 is sneak peek into the next S40 sedan. Both concepts feature a number of design cues that we have seen on the XC90 and S90 such as 'Thor's Hammer' daytime running lights and wide grille. Both concepts use the new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that was jointly developed by Volvo and Geely. This platform will underpin Volvo's future small car lineup including a new electric vehicle. A range of thr…

For its third year, the roadgoing S60 Polestar gets a heart transplant. It’s now powered by an uprated version of Volvo’s DriveE fourcylinder engine instead of the 3.0liter inline sixcylinder, while an Aisin eightspeed replaces the former sixspeed automatic transmission. Whereas the turbocharged sixcylinder was rated at 345 horsepower at 5250 rpm, the four is both supercharged and turbocharged and extracts 362 horsepower from a mere 2.0 liters of displacement. This engine is rated at 302 horsepower in the S60 and 316 horsepower in the XC90. Read more at: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2017-volvo-s60-polestar-first-drive-review The GIST: Well t…

Volvo is aiming the S90 at the likes of the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Eriksson says the company is expecting to sell between 5,000 to 7,000 S90s in the U.S. this year. Ever since pictures of a Volvo V90 wagon diecast model made their way onto the web last fall, everyone has been waiting to see the full size version of it. Swedish magazine Teknikens Värld got their hands on some leaked photos of a pre-production model and it looks exactly like the model. From the pictures, the V90 gets a unique rear tailgate that blends the rear end styling of the S90 sedan with a slight angle for the rear glass. Teknikens Värld says the V90 will about 5.9 inches longer than the S90 - a sedan that has an overall length of 195.4 inches. What is unknown at the moment is if the U.S. will get it. If it does come, expect it to share the same powertrai…

Volvo is in the midsts of revitalizing their lineup with the XC90 currently on sale, and the S90 going on sale next year. But there is some talk of a new coupe coming. Auto Express spoke with Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo's senior vice president of design. Ingenlath said the trio of concepts shown Frankfurt, Detroit, and Geneva in 2013 and 2014 would carry the brand far. The XC Coupe previewed the XC90 and the Concept Estate is a hint at the upcoming V90 wagon. So this could mean a production version the Concept Coupe coming to Volvo's lineup. Now Ingenlath says that Volvo will focus on the volume models for the time being, meaning that the coupe - named S90 in the repo…

The next step in Volvo's lineup revitalization plans was revealed today in Gothenburg, Sweden. The 2017 Volvo S90 will take the place of the long-running S80 as the automaker's biggest sedan. Just one look at the S90 and you can tell that it is an all-new model. The front end is very reminiscent of the XC90 crossover with a chrome grille and headlights with the distinctive 'Thor's Hammer' LEDs. Around back is trunk lid that reminds us of the Concept Coupe from a few years back. Moving inside, the S90 gets leather, metal and wood trim, and Volvo's Sensus Connect touchscreen system. While the spotlight at Volvo has been on the new XC90, the Swedish automaker is readying an encore with the replacement for the S80 flagship, the S90. A spy photographer caught a heavily camouflaged S90 mule undergoing some testing this week. While we can't make out all of the styling cues that the S90 will feature, there are a couple of key items we can. First, Volvo looks to giving the S90 a broad grille that first debuted on the XC90. Also, the front headlights appear to have a set of LEDs running across the middle. Rumors have the S90 taking some design ideas from the recent Concept Estate. Volvo will be using their Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform…

Last week, Volvo announced that will be building a factory in South Carolina that will go online in 2018 and build 100,000 vehicles per year. Quite ambitious considering the brand only sold 56,366 vehicles in the U.S. last year. But the plant is part of a new comeback plan for Volvo. "We have reinvented ourselves and we believe it now makes sense to go on the attack again in the United States," said Lex Kerssemakers, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. Now you might be scratching your head, wondering how a plant that will build more cars than Volvo actually sells at the moment will help the automaker. Well there is precedent with this decision. This morning, Volvo announced that it will be building its first pant in North America. Berkeley County, South Carolina has been chosen as the place where the Swedish automaker will invest up to $500 million for a new facility that is expected to go online in 2018. The new plant will employ up 2,000 people when the plant opens and 8,000 people in the longer term. Why did Volvo pick South Carolina? The automaker explained that the state offered an existing infrastructure and manufacturing base, along with an easy access to international ports. That last point is key as the plant will be building vehicles for both export and local consumption. “We’re excited to build o…

One of the big surprises and head-scratchers at the Detroit Auto Show was the Volvo S60 Cross Country. Taking the formula of the V60 and XC70 Cross Country, Volvo applied it to the S60. But according to Car and Driver, we'll on see around 500 S60 Cross Countries come to the U.S. in 2015 - likely wearing the Austrian Gray shown on the show car or white and black. Meanwhile in such markets as Russia and India, the Cross Country may actually take the place of the standard S60. So why even bring the S60 Cross Country to the U.S. if there will only be a small number of them? According to head of Volvo's North American head Lex Kerssemakers, the model is an experiment for the …

While the promise of Chinese automakers entering the U.S. marketplace hasn't happened yet, the advent of Chinese-built vehicle could. A senior Volvo executive told Reuters that the Chinese-built long-wheelbase version of the S60 (S60L) will be exported to U.S. for the 2015 model year. A Volvo spokesman confirmed that the S60L would be coming to the U.S., but a timeline hasn't been set. Why is Volvo exporting vehicles from China? Money. The executive explained that the relationship between the U.S. dollar and Chinese yuan is less tumultuous than the dollar to euro (Sweden). "The dollar and the yuan have the best relationship, a more stable relationship than the euro and …

Volvo Cars of North America's CEO Tony Nicolosi recently sat down with Automotive News and said the company wants to have one percent of the American marketplace within the five years. That represents around 150,000 to 160,000 vehicles. A bit ambitious considering the brand only sold 61,000 vehicles last year. To help reach this goal, the company plans on launching a product offensive that begins early next year with the XC90. "Once you see us get to XC90 next March, doors open and in dealerships, you will see a new product launch on an annual basis -- and sometimes less than every year. Within six months of the XC90 launch, we will have a plug-in hybrid version. We have…

German magazine Autobild reports that the Volvo Concept Estate that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month will likely become the replacement for the V70. Reportedly named V90, the model will utilize the design of the Concept Estate with two extra doors. Autobild goes onto say the new wagon will use the XC90's platform and come with range of four-cylinder engines. Higher-end models will come with a hybrid system to help produce more power. There is no mention in the report if Volvo is considering an off-road version of this new model like the current XC70. Also, no mention if this model will make it to the U.S. or when it will go into production. Source: A…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 26, 2013 Swedish motorsport and engineering firm Polestar is slowly becoming a household name for hot Volvos. The company has built some unique concepts, including a 508 horsepower S60 last year. The company has also introduced ECU tuning software that is available at dealers and began selling a somewhat detuned version of the S60 concept in Australia last year. Now Polestar has announced they will begin building the S60 and V60 Polestar. The best part? Both models will be sold in U.S., along with Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The S60 and V60 Polestar begins with ch…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 13, 2013 Volvo has been seeing its sales double around the world except in one market; the U.S. The Swedish automaker has seen sales in the U.S. tumbling down during the past decade. In 2004, Volvo moved 139,000 vehicles. For this year, the automaker is projecting that they will only sell 60,000 vehicles. Volvo wants to change that and has announced a new plan that will hopefully reverse this trend. CEO Hakan Samuelsson told dealers the plan for the new Volvo will be an attractive “Scandinavian” design, leadership in safety and environmental issues, and state-of-the-art infotainment systems that feature "clever…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 31, 2013 At the end of this year, production of the Volvo C70 will cease. But a successor is in the cards. According Drive.com.au, Volvo is planning a replacement for the C70. But don't expect the new model to come out anytime soon. "We had a C70 and that definitely had a great exposure on our brand. The Coupe Concept car, we can put that into production and it will have an exposure on the brand. But at the end it's the cream on the cake and at the end you need the cake first before you put the cream on it," said Volvo's senior vice president of product strategy and vehicle line management, Lex Kerssemakers. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 28, 2013 The Volvo Coupe Concept made a big impression on attendees at the Frankfurt Motor Show. So much that Volvo is considering a small production run. According to Auto Bild, Volvo's Board of Directors is deciding whether or not to make the Coupe Concept into a production model. A decision is supposed to be made next year. If given the green light, the coupe will use Volvo's new SPA architecture. Besides this, there isn't much else to go on. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 24, 2013 Despite Volvo CEOs Stefan Jacoby and Hakan Samuelsson saying a flagship sedan isn't a good idea for the brand, Geely's chairman Li Shufu has been pushing for it for awhile. Shufu's pestering seems to be working as he told Chinese media last week that Volvo will be building a flagship. Tentatively called the S100, the sedan will utilize Volvo's Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) architecture and be much longer and luxurious than the S80. The S100 will be built and sold in China. Shufu didn't say if the S100 would be exported. Shufu also didn't mention what would be powering the S100 would could prese…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 16, 2013 Volvo Cars' CEO says that the next-generation of vehicles will be much higher than the models currently sitting in showrooms today. "The new vehicles will be more expensive," said Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson to Automotive News. Samuelsson says that he is not happy with Volvo's current position in the U.S. and thinks its time for a change in their strategy. "I think the company has no future if we are targeting mass market products. The new vehicles will be more expensive, but only if they deliver something the customer finds attractive," said Samuelsson. "Nothing will be excluded. It is fair t…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 29, 2013 What you see before you is the Volvo Concept Coupe. Revealed last night, the concept previews two items for the brand; what's in store for Volvo's future design and demonstrating the versatility of Volvo's new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Volvo bills the the Concept Coupe as "the next-generation P1800". Quite the claim, but the concept has some elements of the iconic coupe. The front end has a "floating grille" with a "distinctive iron mark." On either side of the grille are a set of T-Shaped headlights. The side profile has a unique bow shape and a set of twenty-one inch alloy wheels. The back en…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 28, 2013 Once upon a time, the Volvo lineup had three compact cars; the C30 hatchback, S40 sedan, and V50 wagon. All three went off to the great parking lot in the sky and the V40 hatchback took their place. There was one problem, because of the poor sales of those three models in the U.S., Volvo decided not to sell the V40. Volvo executives and dealers in the U.S. want to see a change in that decision. "The V40 is a great small vehicle, and we would love to have it here. It is not currently in our plan but that does not stop me. I am constantly talking about making that a reality," said Tassos Panas, head of mar…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 7, 2013 Volvo is in the middle of a massive product offensive. With their entire lineup being refreshed and the new V60 coming in 2014, you would think Volvo is coming close to finishing. Not so says Automobile Magazine. They’re reporting that Volvo has more to come in the next few years. We’ll begin with what we know. Next year, Volvo will introduce the brand new XC90 crossover. The new XC90 will also debut Volvo’s Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) that will underpin a majority of Volvo vehicles and use a range of three and four-cylinder engines. Automobile reports the next model to get SPA will be S80 and V70…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 24, 2013 Since Volvo was bought by Chinese automaker Geely back in 2010, talk emerged that Volvo was considering a flagship. This would be further fueled by comments from Geely Chairman Li Shufu who said Volvo should compete directly with BMW, Mercedes and Audi; and the introduction of two concept vehicles, the Concept Universe and Concept You. Volvo's CEO at the time, Stefan Jacoby said a luxury sedan doesn't fit the image of the brand. Jacoby's sucessor agrees. "We don't have any ambitions to go into a segment where we would compete with vehicles that have V-8 or V-12 engines. We don't believe it would fit our…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 11, 2013 Volvo is reconsidering a earlier decision on not selling the V60 Wagon in the U.S. to help bolster Volvo's somewhat small lineup. When Volvo launched the V60 in Europe two years ago, the decision was made not sell it in the U.S. due to a lack of demand for wagon models. But since that time, Volvo's lineup has decreased from ten to six models. That will soon be down to five when the C70 bids adieu later this year. This leaves Volvo dealers in the U.S. in a tough spot since there isn't any new products coming around the bend until 2015, the year of the new XC90. Doug Speck, Volvo's global head of marketi…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 7, 2013 Volvo announced today that overall worldwide sales dropped 6.1% and that 2013 could be a difficult year for the brand. “Competition in the car industry will most likely continue to be as fierce as in 2012 as manufacturers will seek to capture volumes and market shares in a market where the economic situation will remain unstable. 2013 is therefore expected to be a challenging year in terms of margins and growth,” the company said. Volvo delivered 421,951 vehicles in 2012, marking a 6.1% decrease when compared to 2011. The markets which hurt Volvo the hardest were Sweden where sales dropped 11.2% (51,8…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 15, 2012 Last month, Polestar unveiled the 508 HP Volvo S60 Polestar performance concept. At the time, Polestar built one for "one specific client." But, there could be more 508 HP S60s on the road. Autocar talked with the managing director of Volvo UK, Nick Connor. Connor said that the company is “in serious discussion with Polestar to try and make the S60 a reality.” Connor goes onto say if the S60 Polestar is given the greenlight, the vehicle would be built in limited numbers and would be a marketing exercise.
