I went yesterday and looked at a 2001 Regal. 56k miles, $11 grand, very nice car. I was ready to sign the paperwork and drive it home for the first few miles. Then I got on the highway and heard some hellacious road noise. I had the air on max and the radio on and the noise was still pretty loud. I turned the fan and radion off, the noise was still there, it wasn't engine noise and wasn't wind around the a-pillar, my best guess was either shoddy repairs after an accident or crappy tires. I go back to the dealership and mentioned it to the salesman (I drove it solo) and he ran an AutoCheck, which came back clean, so I figured the culprit was the cheap ass Firestone F…

I see those commericials from time to time. You know, the commericials promising that if you buy a car from Police Auctions and so forth, you can get a car from $500 bucks and up. Now, I don't know if I would go that route, but the word "police" got me thinking about a car...to be more specific, a 1994 - 1996 Chevy Caprice 9C1. The same car that Johnny Law used (and is still using somewhere) to write John Public a speeding ticket. Why the 9C1? Well, truth is, I'd settle for a Classic from that year range. And God knows I'd be happy with an Impala SS. Who wouldn't? I guess I'm singling out the 9C1 is because it has a heavy-duty suspension along with engine and tranny twe…

Hot August Nights (and my vacation) is just over a month away and I for one can't wait. This year they raised the limit from 5000 to 5500 cars in the show and there are always thousands more that show up. Tammy and I will be heading south on July 30th with a bunch of other PNWCC members. So far we have 67, 68, & 69 Camaros, a 71 Chevelle, a 72 Skylark and who knows what else cruising down. We should have a couple of old Vettes as well in the convoy. Is anyone else planning on heading to Reno for this?

I have had the wifie out testing driving a few of the cars that she likes.... Nox, Vibe, Vue. Test drove the Vue today. Rode in-but haven't driven one yet. Drove two models- one w/ the 4 banger-and other a v6... Test drove the V6....she liked. But soon as it's my turn to drive...we get quick rush of rain...then someones pulls out in front of me. How come my few minutes suck? The sun rolled out for a few mintues...looked like a storm was on the way... The nice saleslady thinks we have time for a quick spin in the other Vue before the storm.... little did we know a severe storm was rolling in...... Weather was fine thoughout the wife's drive. First, let me preface this be saying that I am an incoming sophmore and have only had a few encounters with girls. (I have friends that are girls, but no one really can see me as someone in a serious relationship). There's this one girl who I've basically had a crush on for about three years, but have never approached her on the subject. We've been good friends, but that's the thing. We've only been friends. She is all I ever think about and the only person I could see myself with. I try to picture myself with other girls but I just can't. I really, really like her. I'm not sure I'm going to see her next year due differences in course selections. I am not sure w…

The girl I'm dating is a software consultant like me. She's just started a new placement, and is very nervous about it, wanting to be sharp for work each day. I've gotten her to come to my place for dinner during the week, and to go out for dinner a couple of times. I asked her to go to a karaoke place tonight - and I know she likes these places, she's told me this, so that's not the issue. I can't seem to convince her to go anywhere. I'm not sure if you can really built a relationship if you can only see the person on the weekend. Is there anything I can do? Suggestions for better things to do that will have her home early? Am I being paranoid and should just let it …

Okay... a few days ago I saw a minivan being driving by a 40s-ish guy. The catch? There was a bumper sticker on it that said "Marriage? Yes! One Man. One Woman". Ever since, I can't stop thinking that I should put my own bumper sticker on my Millenia... just... what, though? Yes, it'll be tacky, cheesy, etc... but so what? I need some way to get back at all the homophobes that drive around.

Okay, guys. Start making a list of what you think the one or two top vehicles per brand will be (or are) that will bring each brand back into the spotlight for GM, as a whole, to prosper like it once did. I'll start: Buick: A Zeta sedan.. Right now, nothing's happening at Buick except talk. The Enclave might draw its own crowd, too, but it might not get enough talk. Cadillac: A&S v1 did it essentially, but the '08 CTS will really get them going Chevrolet: Camaro and Impala. Two pre-existing vehicles on a brand new platform with much better quality, design, and technology. Chevy Trucks/GMC: The Avalanche and rest of the 900 fleet look amazing; this'll do it. Give t…

Any tips to ease it out? It gets pretty bad for me. The thing is, that's the only sickness I really get. I've been on a boat in a storm and I didn't get sick. when I get on an airplane, and when they bring the food, I throw right up, instantly. So XP came along with me on a recent roadtrip for business. There's a long story behind this but basically the pic speaks for itself. I was doing about 110 when we passed a cleverly hidden State Trooper. (not really but I was staring at my speedo not the median) For reasons which I care not discuss I got my car towed & impounded for about 20 minutes... after the whole ordeal was over (no serious trouble, mostly a waste of time) XP looks over at a crunched 18-wheeler in the impound lot... he casually says: "Wow, that $hit jack-knifed huh?" to which the flatbed driver responds: Yeah... that truck killed a 12 year old girl yesterday. The poor child…

I went to see the movie Click this weekend. It was a very good movie but it wasn't too much of a comedy. This was the most serious part I have seen Adam Sandler play in a movie. The first bit is funny but then the movie starts to get really serious. It actually makes you realize life better. It gives a good message and Christopher Walken plays a good part as well. I would say this is a must see movie. The Cadillac Sixteen concept even makes an appearance in the movie. Lucky Adam Sandler. He got to drive it, lol.

Well, as I alluded to in this thread, I had some pretty big plans this past weekend. My father and I drove 5.5 hours to Cortland NY for an estate auction. The reason for this journey: a 1969 Corvette convertible...yellow/black, 350/300 engine, auto, factory a/c. The body was a little rough and it needed some interior bits, but everything was there and the frame was good (C3 frames tend to rot around the door sills and in front of the rear wheels). For the right price, it would have made a worthwhile project, along with accomplishing my goal of owning a Corvette before I die. Now here's where it gets interesting. We had with us the Corvette Black Book, which had the engin…

JUST KIDDING! Actually yesterday I witnessed a miracle. I went out in the morning and got some "Marvell's Mystery Oil" and two sets of spare keys made for the Super 88. When I came home there were some sun showers and then it got overcast. I was on the fence about weather or not to work on the car finally. After about 25 minutes I have the 2-4-6-8 valve cover off and I pour some of the Mystery Oil on #2 & 8 cylinders. Those two supposedly have no compression. I call my friend Kevin outside. (he was talking to Marcia inside) I had him crank the car with the valve cover off so I can see what's what. The #2/4/6/8 spark plugs have no wires, and as he c…

With $ 3 + a gallon gas, who isn't concerned about gas mileage. My current car, at 14 years and 225,000 miles, still gets what was posted on the window sticker...about 18 in town and 28 on a road trip. It still gets that 28....amazing. Cautiously, I'm looking at new cars. I've been out of town the last 3 weekends, so I've had the opportunity to rent. I had a GP as a rental in Florida. On a road trip across the lower part of the state, the 3800 returned 27.7 mpg (with the AC on the whole time and some non-freeway driving). This past weekend, I was in L.A. I wanted a Monte 3.5 to see the mpg, but they gave me an Impala 3.5. UNBELIEVABLE. From LA to Santa Barbara a…

While on my trip to Ohio for fireworks yesterday, i saw this odd looking SUV. I first saw it about a mile south of the Tech Center, but this was as close as i could get to it, on the on ramp to 696. At first i thought it was a Jeep Commander, but on the sides it had the Hummer name. On the back, the names and logos were covered with black tape. I dont know what it was, but it defanitly wasn't a H2 or H3. Does anyone know anything about this?

Driving on my way home this afternoon from work I had the UNpleasure of seeing a pretty bad accident. Police and rescue personnel had not responded yet, however; being a helper on a few friends Volunteer Fire Depts, I responded as best I could. Apparently, a guy driving a relatively new Civic wasn't paying a large amount of attention to what he was doing, changed lanes without looking, ran sidelong into a Kenworth, got turned in front of it, Kenworth driver slammed onto his brakes, Toyota Sequoia driver slammed into the back of the Kenworth's trailer (happened to be hauling logs), then another Honda, this one an Accord ran into the back of the Toyota....after that thing…

Welcome to the first issue of "In Retrospect" for July 2006. This internet publication exclusive to Cheers & Gears will be available here in the Lounge bi-weekly. "In Retrospect's" mission is to bring you random bits of automotive related articles, automotive ads that have long since went out of print, and other auto junk pulled from over a decade of "Car & Driver" magazines. Here's what's available for you to gawk at this month: The Chevrolet Astro was in a class of it's own. (Oct. 1996): Can't afford a new or classic Vette? Well, here's a model of one and some cologne so you can inhale that new car scent all day long. (Oct. 1996): This is here because, …

There's been some interest in dropping a turbo into the 2.0 Litre Holden 4-banger, as far as going with an option that's been tried and true for over a decade with this engine; however, I think I found a better option. 108,920 HP @ 102 RPM 5,608,312 LB/ft of torque @ 102 RPM While the 14-cylinder does drink 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour, I think I can be a little lighter on the throttle to help that. That's the inline 12-cylinder model. I might need to beef up the front suspension a tad to carry the weight. Info here: http://www.bath.ac.uk/~ccsshb/12cyl/ You think the guys at Jiffy Lube are going to hate me when I pull in with this thing (under?) the h…

Here's the lowdown: This fall, chances that I'll finally find something to drive are looking good. I'm hoping to God I'll manage to be driving a classic first-generation Pontiac Firebird, but I'm not going to bet the bank on it. I've considered some other options that fit my criteria (it has to be rear-drive) so I can have a backup plan just in case things don't turn out the way I have planned them to. I've considered more modern cars, too, and Cadillac's Catera has made it's way onto my list. The car is okay as is. But a thought crossed my mind: if I do end up driving one of these, could I graft the nose of the GTO onto a Catera? And with a little bit of fabrication a…

This could very well be something I'll start doing monthly...or even bi-monthly. You see, I have over a decade of old "Car & Driver" magazines stored in a Rubbermaid bin in my closet, and I need to put them to good use. Here's the idea I had: every month, pull one random issue out of mothballs and scan something random from the issue I select. It could be an ad, it could be an article. Every page is fair game. To start us off, I decided to show off a bunch of random junk. Since this is the first -- or last, I'm not sure -- it's deserving of a light boom. Clicky I know this evokes a reaction from most of you, but if this were a year old and black, this would be just like my father's bought-new 1987 Trofeo, the very first car I remember (and the first car I 'drove' - on my dad's lap, of course!). Same digital 'gages', same throttle shifter. Ours had a moonroof and an NEC mobile cellular car phone, though. I've seen only a few Toronados of these hated downsized years, and most of them beaten hard with random wheels, busted antennas, and broken headlamp doors. But this? Almost perfect. *Sigh*

Living in north Texas provides me with great storms like the one we had tonight. Detroit's Midsize SUV Problem It's not just the mammoth SUVs that are suffering. The once-powerful midsize segment is also dwindling as gas prices rise and boomers age ------------- In the 1990s, NASCAR dads and soccer moms ditched their minivans for hauling kids and groceries and flocked instead to mid-sized, truck-based sport utility vehicles such as the mega-selling Ford Explorer and Chevy Trailblazer. That was great for Ford (F) and General Motors (GM), who minted money to the tune of $6,000 to $10,000 of profit per vehicle depending on incentive. But the cultural and financial tide has turned against these balky gas guzzlers much faster than any of the compan…

Here's the rule. You must use features, designs, and components from currently available vehicles. Stuff from out of production cars doesn't count. For example: Crown Cic body with a FWD CVT mated to a VW 4 cylinder TDI. The interior would feature a center gauge console and column shifter.

I'm preparing for this year's road trips, despite some new health issues ("mass" on liver, left arm/elbow pain, jaw pain, reoccurrence of irregular/too fast heart beat) and looking for a new job (etc).... Ironically, I haven't been to a cruise night in this area (Elgin, etc., IL) yet or gone to any dirt track races ... nor am I very organized at getting plans together for 2006 ... including a list of IL-IN-WI-IA-MI car shows/events, etc..... Hmmm...would also love to organize a gathering to see the movie "Cars" ... I've seen it, but would love to see it again, considering it features a '76/'77 MC as one of the announcers, has a great commentary on RT 66's "demise" after…

The Ben Roethlisbeger deal is just another example of the ludicrous nature of people not wearing helmets riding a motorcycle. Its time to mandate it. You will not avoid an accident. Chances are good you will take a dive at some point. The pavement is hard. Its harder than just about anything else you can think of. Maybe it doesn't look cool. But neither does an egg splattered across the pavement.

Well, it was a hell of a stressful weekend, what with getting my ass canned on Friday, out-of-the-blue (what the hell am I saying, we all saw the writing on the wall months ago.) For background, see the "Philosophically speaking, are you happy?" thread. Anyhoo, this afternoon I went for a follow-up interview at the Lincoln-Mercury dealership in town (after a preliminary meeting on Friday afternoon). I landed the job. I'll be doing the same thing I was at the other dealership, except the hours are much better, and there are a few perks the other place did not match. I'm happy and thankful this ordeal appears to be over. I start July 3rd. *whew*. Also, I don't know …

What Are You Reading?

I'm bound to get a response like "Reading f@#king sucks, man, go watch television" here, but whatever. I'm willing to take that risk. So, question is, what are you reading? I don't care if it's a novel the size of a $h!house brick, the Bible, "Car and Driver", or the side of a cereal carton, just post, up the old post count, and whistle some cheezy tune in the key of A. What am I reading? "Futility" by Morgan Robertson and "The Sun Dog" by Stephen King. Note: I feel like mentioning the novella "Futility" for one, if not a few, reasons. I'd like to point out that it was the novel that strangely foreshadowed the Titanic disaster of 1912. (The book wa…

Do you think if the dustbusters or something really close looking to them) had been introduced now in the middle of the crossover craze and with wilder designed being more accepted, that they would have done a lot better? especially if they had a current interior.

... and way impatient for change. I just dropped the price on the Firehawk collection, having decided to sell I want it gone - NOW! Then I want a nice long vacation in a cool sparsely populated place. A good book, some high quality alcohol and live music out of cell phone range. Yes, I'm losing it. What of it?

I just called them now trying to add a mailing address because I don't want my mail to go to my current residence address, where there is a shared mailbox and I'm worried people might open my mail and stuff. They insisted that I can only have one residential and mailing address, and if I change it to my friend's Markham mailing address the policy address will have to change and apparently rate group as well. Markham is way higher than Waterloo. So they did, but they kept Waterloo as the rating territory. And they went on with all the bullcrap about this and that and how we're not going to cover you if anything happens and your drivers license address is this and that... …

Why are there no kilts available at the Cheers & Gears Store? They are perfect for summer heat (plenty of air circulation), plus someone could recreate that iconic Marilyn Monroe shot of her standing over the air grate, trying to hold her skirt down. What more could anyone ask for?

My Dad replaced his '03 Dodge Dakota with a brand-new Inferno Red '06 Dakota today. It was an impulse buy to say the least. A water-pump had gone on his '03 earlier today, so he brought it directly to the dealer for service. Instead of coming home with a repaired '03, he came home with a new '06. The dealer practically gave the thing away (he had several months left on his original lease). It's a fully-loaded Dakota Laramie complete with the 4.7-liter V-8, leather interior, 17" Aluminum/Chrome Wheels, upgraded Infinity sound-system w/ in-dash 6-disc CD/MP3 player, SIRIUS Satelite radio, and just about every other imaginable option. It stickered for just over $…

So, I was in Minneapolis for the weekend, visiting a cousin that lives there. I left at about 10 this morning to head back to Fargo. I had only been on Interstate for about 10 minutes and was almost out of the cities when traffic came to a stand-still. I couldn't believe it. It was a Sunday morning and I was headed out of the city while most everyone was trying to get back in after the weekend. I figured it must be an accident. I sat in traffic for about half an hour before I got up to it. turns out it was a Tundra that had SLAMMED into the back of a BRAND NEW 07 LTZ Suburban. It had to have really smashed it because because it had completely destroyed the back doo…

I have been a little busy and have wanted to go see a flick. For some stupid reason, I wanted to see "Poseidon." The reviews were not good, but I love ships. Two years out of college, I got to go on the QE2 but I was hooked long before then as a little kid when we would sail out of NY on other liners to go see relatives on the other side of the Atlantic. Is "Poseidon" any good? Any good comedies or mysteries out there? Reg, where are you?

So, yesterday my family and friends decided to get together, pack a whole bunch of $h!, and go to the beach for father's day. They left early in the morning...like 10:30 or so...I said f@#k that noise and slept in till around noon-ish...I decided I'd just meet them at the beach. It's time to leave and right now my car is kind of out of commission for the moment...nothing serious, just doing a couple things, so I couldn't drive it, so my sister let me drive her car. So everything is all good. I get down to the beach, and you can either park in the lot for $7 bucks, or park on the side of PCH for free. I didn't have any cash on me, so I went driving up an…

My mom decided to put our house up for sale without telling me. I actually found out myself when I saw a picture of our house in the newspaper and on the internet. I'm mad!!!!!! We are selling because my parents are getting divorced which sucks. Our house is going for $529000 CAN. Here it is. Hopefully someone who will take care of it buys it. My House We also need to leave that bar there in the backyard. That part is sad because my mom built that herself and it took her about 2 months. She built it for my dad for his 50th 3 years ago.

remember I am not a huge RWD fan but I thought this would be a fun discussion. What FWD cars now we reap the biggest sales and image benefits had the car been designed with RWD? The rule is the car would have the same powertrains (engine and tranny) as offered now. Styling would remain the same, inside and out. The only change is the drive wheels! You can even do a top 10 list if you like! GO PANTHER!

Well, since the crash I knew I was going to need to get a new car, its inevitable. Since the crash I've been driving around in a less than perfect 1992 Honda Accord LX 2-door 5-speed. I figured that as long as I had it I wouldn't need to make a rash decision on a new car and I'd be able to save some money up, put some money towards baby-related stuff and get my finances in order before deciding on how much and what I want. Well, last night the Accord lost second gear (it just grinds when I try to put it in second, makes driving interesting) and I dont have high hopes for the rest of the car. So I figured that I would take suggestions/comments from the peanut gallery b…

So, as most of you know, I have a best friend named Ray. Here's what I knew about him for the last 18-20 months until yesterday: 19 years old, black child living in a less black-than-white metro-Detroit community, grew up in Laguna Beach until he was 8, his dad died when Ray was 8, mom died when he was 12, and he's lived in MI since being 8 with his grandfather because of financial reasons. Well, yesterday at my graduation party, I asked Darren something (Ray's brother; I don't remember what I had asked) and he was confused. Now, this was something he would've known, but didn't. So I asked on: Your mom is alive? "Yes," was his answer.. with a questioned look on his face…

So anyways I got the job detailing cars and started last Friday. It was mostly a learning experience, but basically my job conists of inspecting the new cars that just came off the car hauler to make sure they don't have any damage, finding new cars on the lot that need to be washed and washing them, waxing/cleaning the inside of people's cars who have made appointments for detailing jobs, and checking the "spindle" to see if any salespeople have requests for cars to be washed if they have customers coming to look at a certian vehicle. I also dust off the cars in the showroom every morning. It's pretty easy and the time goes by a lot faster than I thought it would, and…

Reading various posts around the board today, I realized that there are a lot of posters on the board that remind me of the Uncle Rico character. He was always dreaming of 1982 and wishing he could go back. I think some people here live in 1965 or 1985 or whatever year they want GM to be in again.

Goodbye riced out Civics! The federal government tabled a bill Thursday to make street racing a crime and impose stiffer sentences for those convicted. If passed by Parliament, the proposed legislation would make street-racing a separate offence under the Criminal Code -- raising maximum sentences in some cases and imposing mandatory driving prohibitions for all convicted. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...60615/20060615/ http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_1221.aspx

This past weekend, on the 7th of May 2006 I joined XP715 and SpeedingPenguin in Welsley Mass at the site of an old Olds dealer for a fantastic car show. XP715 Brought his beater, the one he stores at my house. It's the 1977 Cutlass Supreme we're always talking about. They were very polite to us despite the car looking like a well worn daily driver and not some trailer queen. The local Oldsmobile Club even took photos of it for posterity. About 70% of the show consisted of late 60s to early 70s Cutlasses/442s. I was dissapointed to see only a few 50s cars and just two Pre-WWII cars. Here's neat highlights. When I was unsure about my sexuality... well, more or less unwilling to admit that I was gay, I had my fair share of girlfriends. Well, as I looked in the local Newspaper, I notice one that I probably would have ended up going out with again if I had turned out to be straight. It was for the upcoming Laurel Queen Pageant for Brookville's annual Laurel Festival. My jaw dropped as I saw her pic and read about her... My, how I have ignored what a talented and beautiful woman she has grown into. But, I'm gay... and I'd have it no other way. Still... for the breeders... I set up a toggle switch in my car that is wired up from the fuse box feed to the brake lights where I tied in to it so I can flash my brake lights without actually stopping. Normal brake lights are fully operational as well but I think it is a very good feature and its works. The other day someguy was too close to me so i flicked it on and back he went. Also next I was thinking about wiring up a toggle switch with reverse lights to scare someone at a traffic light just flick it on. Any thoughts about my invention???

We love our 2003 Expedition EB but we are having to get it fixed all the time. Partly because the service department at Ford is terrible and they dont know what they are doing. For some reason, it is vibrating constantly and it stopped running today. Should we replace it? Is it worth to get a new vehicle? This Expedition has 80,000 kms on it.

It will most likely be a GM because they are cheaper. 97-03 Malibu 95-99 Aurora 00-03 Cavalier/Sunfire 99-04 Grand Am 93-98 Bonneville 94-2000 Concorde/ LHS 87-92 Blazer/Jimmy 2 door 99-04 Alero any other suggestions? BTW, it should look good between our two beasts, LOL.
