Happy Mother’s Day everyone! We hope you’re all either with your moms, on your way there or plan to give them a call shortly. Who's packing ERs? Not the uninsured Reuters One in five people in the United States visit an emergency room every year, and most of them have health insurance of some kind, according to a U.S. government survey released on Wednesday. The survey contradicts a common perception that emergency rooms are packed with uninsured people and illegal immigrants. It also rejects some claims that people are using the emergency department for routine care -- just 10 percent of visits were for non-urgent causes. "In 2007, approximately one in five persons in the U.S. population had one or more emergency department visits in a 12-month period," the report from the National Center f…

Delta Charges U.S. Troops Returning From Afghanistan $2,800 In Baggage Fees WASHINGTON -- Delta Air Lines is facing intense criticism after charging 34 U.S. soldiers returning from Afghanistan $2,800 in baggage fees. The incident came to light on Tuesday after a couple of the new-media savvy soldiers recorded a video about their ordeal and posted it on YouTube. "We showed up and found out we had too many bags," said Army Staff Sgt. Robert O'Hair in the video, which was shot on their flight. "We had four bags, and Delta Air Lines only allows three bags. Anything over three bags you have to pay for, even though there's a contract between the United States government and …

Chinese Police Get In Hot Water With Mercedes ML Police Car William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com July 10, 2011 In the your not fooling anyone file, a police department in Fangchenggang (part of Guangxi Province)bought a new Mercedes Benz ML350 SUV to be used a police car. The police department spent about 900,000 yuan ($139,000 USD)to get it into their fleet. To fool the citizens of Fangchenggang, the department decided to rebadge the ML350 into a Honda CR-V which only costs about 200,000 yuan ($30,000 or so). The plan was foolproof or so they thought. The citizens of Fengchenggang were not impressed with the rebadge job and ridiculed the …

Taking a deep drag on his cigarette while resting on the steering wheel of his truck, he looks like a parody of a middle-aged lorry driver. But the image covers up a much more disturbing truth: At just the tender age of two, Ardi Rizal's health has been so ruined by his 40-a-day habit that he now struggles to move by himself. The four-stone Indonesia toddler is certainly far too unfit to run around with other children - and his condition is set to rapidly deteriorate. But, despite local officials' offer to buy the Rizal family a new car if the boy quits, his parents feel unable to stop him because he throws massive tantrums if they don't indulge him. Why going green won't make you better or save you money Washington Post Like most Whole Foods shoppers, David Bain thinks he is a decent citizen of Earth. His family buys mostly organic food. They recycle. He recently fortified his green credentials by removing a leaking oil tank in his yard. But here's a head scratcher: Though the Bains live in Arlington within walking distance of Whole Foods [CSpec plug: this is where I live!], they often drive there in an SUV that gets just 19 miles per gallon. He has noticed that his SUV is not alone in the lot. Does that make Bain a hypocrite? He paused before responding: "I could see how people would come to that conclusion, but…

Fairfield County Deputy Gary Hummel said Thursday the undergarments were found in trees and on hillsides in several spots this week on a road in Berne Township, about 30 miles southeast of Columbus. He says some of the panties were still folded the way they'd come in packaging, while others appeared to have been worn. There were nearly 1,700 pairs in all…

A buddy gave my better half some tickets, so I decided to check it out with him., last year. Did not see the flag go up and down, as we did not see the start or the finish. But we did see it on TV lol I just did not not want to deal with the rush of the crowds. I know, my bad. I got to say, I was quite impressed by the power I heard, when the cars raced by. It was incredible. I had more fun walking around the track then sitting in the bleachers. Even though, we did have pretty good seats. Well, I do not remember the name of the race, but I would go back for another. Pretty sure, I won't be invited, though. lol

Found this on Yahoo about 9 models that blow you away with small engines. First and foremost is this from the story: Qoute "Sedan or coupe, the compact Caddy is among the industry’s best-kept secrets, more fun to drive than even a BMW 3-Series. That lively, engaging personality is best experienced with the 2.0-liter turbo four, rather than the pricier and more pedestrian 3.6-liter V-6, or the outright anemic 2.5-liter four sans turbocharger." Over all a great read and even SMK's lowly Mercedes Benze gets a spot. https://www.yahoo.com/autos/nine-models-that-prove-small-engines-can-beat-big-116392112457.html

Didn't see one, so I'm starting one.. Saw one of the new '15 Ford F150s on the road or the first time today...silver crew cab, temporary plate...looks like someone really broke in their new truck--was splattered w/ mud and had lots of dents in the aluminum body panels.. also saw a derelict 70s Chevy LUV in a restaurant parking lot--had been red I think at one time, paint was faded to flat orangish..not one panel was straight, nose was crunched in, doors dented, bed sides mashed down..but still in use. Was a 2 round headlight version, I remember seeing them w/ 4 round lights..

* Included a note about my pacemaker replacement (Wednesday, 03/25/2015) on my website, with this engine image: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/03/25/wednesday-ratio-10/ Adding to that: I was awake enough Wednesday evening to watch “CHiPs” & a couple new shows, but was in & out of sleep otherwise. Today (Thursday), I’ve rested & watched TV, including an hour private investigating in California, an hour sleuthing in Maine, an hour housekeeping in Pittsburgh PA, then back to California to patrol the highways & now NCAA March Madness. [if only road tripping were really THAT easy!] Have a list of things to do, but not ready to tackle much. My lef…

* Bet many can identify with this: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/03/18/daily-dose-wake-up-wed-9/ With 4 open heart surgeries & 1 pacemaker replacement, I’ve a number of roadmaps. Some scars will be refreshed when I go in for another pacemaker replacement next Wednesday, 03/25/2015; unlike last time, hopefully this WILL be a simple outpatient procedure with no overnight hospital stay…! While watching NCAA’s March Madness on Thursday, I made some tweaks to my website & added a page for articles I’ve written: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/my-articles/ Haven’t decided if I’m going to put all of my road trip pics there somehow or not. * I road tripped at least once a year, 2002-2011, to meet people & see family-friends. September 2009, I journeyed along Route 66 (starting out at the Lincoln Highway National Headquarters, Franklin Grove IL), meeting a lot of people & seeing a lot of sights. I made the most of the 2-week timeframe I had. I snapped this photo at the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook AZ, 09/13/2009. http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/03/17/tuesday-trip-9/ Cort www.oldcarsstronghearts.com 1979 & 1989 Caprice Classics | pigValve, paceMaker, cowValve "I can feel it in my bones" __ Kenny Rogers __ 'Good Friend'

Can you identify what vehicle this gear shift is from? This is not a joke. It's from a friend's Facebook account. He says its not photoshopped other than colour and contrast tweaks (he's a pro photographer). Apparently it's from an abandoned vehicle, all he gave me so far is the location. I asked him for more info, I'll let you know. View full article

Backfire #4 - Super Cars Aren't So Super March 5th, 2015 Blake Noble explains his recent and controversial OppositeLock editorial on why he isn't hyped up on hypercars. So Mr. Musk is in the news with announcing yesterday land agreements to start building the Hyperloop in January 2016 with completion in 2018. http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/technology/musks-hyperloop-moves-closer-to-reality/ar-BBhZvZV?ocid=ansCNBC11 My question is will it really change the way we travel? Will it truly get built from border to border or just a magic trick of distracting investors and the news from the poor performance of Tesla? Your Thoughts?

Never done it, haven't looked at many. I have a area of interest that I would very much like to share with others. In fact I am, to a degree, driven to do so. I am still considering publication, but with friends having gone thru that (successfully), it's an arduous task. Websites get lost in the oceanic shuffle, relevant pre-existing sites either disappear or have a self-imposed system that precludes the type/source of my interest (Wikipedia). What's the scuttlebutt on the blog universe, and does anyone pay any attention??

My thread about letting your kid practice motor sports seems to be a success, and most people there say they would let or even encourage their kid/s to get involved into such an activity, so the next question is... how much does it cost to give a kid a shot at some of the cheaper options, like go - karting? How often do those things break down anyway?

Yahoo, reprinted a story by "The Street" that covers the top 10 WORST auto's ever in the world. Seems 8 of the top 10 are right here in the US. Look at the 10 and tell me if you agree. They start by saying #10 is the 1979 Oldmobile Station wagon Diesel and end with the #1 worst Pontiac Aztek. The pictures are in the order of the story. Their justification is interesting. Some of it I do feel is personal experiance versus actual fact, but each person is entitled to their opinion. http://autos.yahoo.com/news/10-worst-cars-of-all-time-revisited-012257791.html;_ylt=Al5rVgaNjh2_MKSMECEr4nImhvZ_;_ylc=X3oDMTduaWFhdTdlBF9TAzIxNDY4NjI2MzAEYWN0A3RpdGxlBGN0A3N…

Came across this story about Ferrari beating Bugatti and it is very cool to watch. Interesting is that in the quarter mile you do see that the Ferrari is a couple car lengths ahead but as they hit the finish line and keep going the bugatti closes the gap. Makes one wonder who would really win in a mile long race. https://fr.news.yahoo.com/laferrari-demolishes-bugatti-veyron-drag-race-video-135004475.html

What do the Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Camaro, Infiniti Q50, Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG, Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe, and Toyota Yaris all have in common? When you get that one, you'll get the answer to this one also.. What do the Aston Martin DB9 and Scion iQ have in common? Ready for a 3rd? What do the Chevrolet Sonic, Buick Regal, Lexus LS460, and Bentely Mulsanne have in common? Assume 2015 models for all of the above.

Found on Craigslist - This 1980 Camaro Mustang GTO Chevelle Charger Honda Prototype. What looks to us to be a thrown together combination of spare parts from the garage can be yours for the low price of $1,234 Canadian. That's right... 1,2,3,4. The owner believes it to be equipped with a rear-engine 450 (cc? ci? horsepower?) twin-cylinder. He also believes that keyword stuffing his ad's title will help interest some shopper looking for a Camaro or Chevelle into spending money on this. Three-wheeled cars have a long and interesting history. A new entry, Elio Motors, is in the start up stages using one of the closed manufacturing plants that GM sold during the bankruptcy…

Those of us into cars are a special breed. Many of us keep our cars as if they are another member of the family. So when we see friends or relatives mistreat their vehicles, it raises hairs on the back of our neck. What annoys you the most about these people? Is it: How messy they keep their car? I have a relative that just picked up a clean used Ford Explorer 6 months ago. I saw it when he first got it and while it is a 2006, it was clean and in decent shape. I saw it again over the holiday weekend and it was loaded with junk, brake dust all over the wheels and in need of a bath. Their disregard for for regular maintenance? Back in high school I h…
