I loaded up on THREE night classes (9 semester credits) and should wrap up this degree in mid-May. Last night was my last mid-term. Kind of tough, actually. So, now it's time to go away. I leave for Las Vegas on Sunday (should be toasty) and then for LA on Wednesday, triangulating back up next Saturday. Booked a while ago so I got real cheap fares (each leg under $ 100). I am itching for some poolside r & r and sunshine. How about those of you celebrating Spring Break? Any plans?

just watched MISSISSIPPI BURNING easily one of the best movies ever. extremely good drama. tremendous acting. wonderful actors in their prime. but honestly. I found that one thing I was struggling with the WHOLE MOVIE. ..... A very young Sandra Bullock covered in sweat or a young Ashley Judd covered in sweat? tough choices. seen any movies like that where you JUST had to decide which is better?

Well I took the Intrepid to Tom Manzi Dodge today to have the oil changed since it was about 100 miles before it wad due. The clerk/technician guy comes into the showroom where I am (ogling a 300C), and says they found an oil leak. Oh great, so it has one after all (if you remember from when I first got the car, the mechanic we normally go to looked at it and found oil on the engine but wasn't sure where and said he couldn't find out until they cleaned the engine...when it got warmer). Anyway, he brought me over to my car which was on the lift and showed me. As it turns out, the Oil Pressure Sending Switch is leaking oil. It's not a big leak, and not that expensive to fix…

Guys, "LA CAR" an online automotive website about the southern California car culture will be at AutoBooks in Burbank tomorrow, Saturday, 3-24-07. If any of you have time, come down between 11am and 3pm. Located at 3524 West Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank, AutoBooks is Southern California's largest automotive bookstore and one of the best places for car enthusiasts to hang out on a Saturday afternoon. It's not unusual to see celebrities, car designers, and others in the industry stopping by (Jay Leno is a regular, who I've seen there before myself.) AutoBooks has been around since 1951. It was begun as a mostly mail-order sideline by Road & Track staffer Harry…

Sunday (yesterday) while I was at work, a repair man came in to fix one of the large refridgerators. He had a Dodge Sprinter work truck. I went about my delievers, but when I had a break and while he was waiting for temperature readouts, I decided to ask him what he thought of the Sprinter...the following conversation ensued: Me: So how do you like the Sprinter? Him: It handles pretty good and is great on diesel. But it's limited to a top speed of 85 mph Me: (to self: well, it's a van). Him: I went to the dealer to ask how much oil it holds and they said 12 quarts. So i changed the oil and put twelve quarts in it and th light came on telling me I put too much il i…

Article appears here: http://www.slate.com/id/2161309/ As you've probably heard, there's been an explosion of inequality in the United States over the past four decades. The gap between high-skilled and low-skilled workers is bigger than ever before, and it continues to grow. How can we close the gap? Well, I suppose we could round up a bunch of assembly-line workers and force them to mow the lawns of corporate vice presidents. Because the gap I'm talking about is the gap in leisure time, and it's the least educated who are pulling ahead. In 1965, leisure was pretty much equally distributed across classes. People of the same age, sex, and family size tended to have abo…

Never Heard That Excuse A fellow bought a new Corvette and was out on an interstate for a nice evening drive. The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair, and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped up to 80 mph he suddenly saw a flashing red and blue light behind him. "There ain't no way they can catch a Corvette," he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 90, 100, 130 and finally 150 with the light still behind him. "What the hell am I doing?" he finally thought and pulled over. The cop came up to him, took his license without a word, and examined it and the car. "I've had a tough shift and this is my last …

Being the "Resident Young Stickler" that I am ... I find it fascinating when I spot ads for cars that advertise for one year of car, but show a completely different year of the same car. Case in point: 1976 Des Moines Register ad Check out this, that a friend on the El Camino list posted: http://www.myelcamino.net/1976.htm ...and scroll down a little bit to the "Clean Sweep" ad. You see that " '76 Monte Carlo " they have pictured there? Well, I don't think it is; sure looks like a '75. But ... you be the judge and compare.... If it's not one thing, it's another. My Dell Latitude laptop JUST had the AC adapter replaced because the previous was going bad...I had a new one sent all the way from the Netherlands. As of yesterday, the screen on my laptop started going dark upon being plugged into AC power...it works fine on battery power, but as soon as you plug into the wall, it turns dark gray to the point where you can see things open but it's impossible to read anything on the screen. Two summers ago I had to replace the whole motherboard (after only 1 year of ownership). A few months ago my Y key fell off (and still needs to be put back on) and the very right edge of my monitor does this …

Haven't had a good food thread in a while. I was reading the paper the other day and came across a recipe for deep dish pizza, which caught my eye because, as a native Chicagoan, I hold deep dish pizza to a very high standard and haven't had anything good around here. I decided to make it this morning even though I didn't have all of the proper equipment, like a mixer with a dough hook so I had to spend the better part of an hour playing with the dough, but it was totally worth it. I didn't do anything fancy with the innards since I was mainly concerned with getting the crust right. In the end it turned out great, would have been better if I had been more concerned wi…

I found a 67 or 68 Eldorado, gold in colour, east of my town and I really want it. It is in need of desperate restoration but the body and paint and still alright. I felt sorry for it because it is buried in a snowbank made by a snow plow in a lot with 2 or 3 Corvettes, 86 and 87 Corvettes. It is right beside a shop and I need to know whether parts for these are hard to come by. I know parts cars probably are. Also, are these reliable enough to make the trip to Woodward. I will update next time I find out some info.

I've got a gig doing semi-full time work at the local Sign*A*Rama. First official day was yesterday. We're laying out the vinyl for a 15 foot wide sign for a Vietnamese restaurant. "Sweet Child" which is my all time favorite BTW.... anyway I say under my breath something like "sweet it's Guns & Roses" Here's the funny part, the asian guy who works with me is amazed that I LIKE G&R so I'm like yeah... who didn't like G&R in the late 80s early 90s??? OK ... first of all ... I'm not talking "in general". I mean ... in terms of your FAVORITE vehicle ... be it, like me, the Monte Carlo ... or Buick Regal ... or Pontiac Grand Prix ... or Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme ... etc. I'm just curious ... with all of the different cars and trucks available to be enthusiastic about, what keeps you in the family? Is it the styling? Is it the reliability? Is it the looks from others admiring the car as you drive down the road? Is it a "family" thing? Is it fond memories? Or, is it something else entirely? For me ... it is a family thing, mostly ... literally and figuratively. My "love affair" began when my parents bought a bra…

So I went to Lowell Used Auto today, initially planning to buy an antenna for the Prizm, But as we all know, you never just get one thing at the junkyard I wandered around the main lot for a while...it's where everything besides GM cars are put (as well as new arrivals). I saw 4 Intrepids there, which made me sad. 2 were wrecked, one of them had no engine, and the other actually looked ok...but I couldn't get at it...probably a dead 2.7L. There was a row of 3 previous gen Caravans. Now, I like looking around and seeing if any of the vehicles will still turn over or light up. Sure enough, the last one I looked at (which had been repainted red from its original blue start…

So this summer I'd like to put in enough extra hours at work to get some wheels for the Intrepid. I was thinking either 18, 19, or 20 inch wheels...although I'd like to see what they look like on the car in those sizes. I wonder if we've all done this, at least to some extent. Someone we know, perhaps love and/or care very much about, or perhaps even just know through media outlets, dies ... and we say "He/she will be missed" and/or "We'll never forget him/her" ... because of how they treated and/or respected us ... and/or changed our life in some way/shape/fashion. But, life continues and, gradually, the feeling of loss lessens. Then, somewhere down the line, you find something or read or see or hear something that, instantaneously, reminds you of that person. For that matter, it doesn't even have to be a death. Maybe it's an old friend with whom we've lost touch ... or an event (s…

I am putting up this poll because I can't decide myself. I really want to do a project car and create something unique but cost comes into effect. I either want to do an 89 Dakota, 318 conversion but this would be a long term project to spread out the costs and badge it as a Dakota SUper Bee or Rumble Bee. I also may take that Aries I saw a while back or maybe the one in the junkyard for cheaper and drop in a 2.2L Turbo from a Shadow or Daytona. Intercoolers can be had for it as well. I really like the Aries idea to surprise people at the track if I can get it quite fast. There is a 10 second Reliant out there as well. 1989 Reliant "Relentless". A RWD K car has been done …

So I was coming home tonight and going 64 in a 55, and I come up on this van quite quickly, forcing me to slow to 38 at is was a 2-lane road and in a no passing zone. Meanwhile, a semi is coming up behind me, so I continuously tap my brakes so that I don't get rear-ended because I'm now going 17MPH UNDER the speed limit. So, I keep doing this, but the semi keeps barreling down on me. I mean, he didn't even seem to be slowing down. Luckily, I think he figured it out just in time and got stopped, but I wasn't positive that I wasn't going to have to merge into the oncoming lane as to not get rear-ended. I don't know who thinks 38 in a 55 is a safe speed, but if you're goi…

After a week of above average temperatures and a high of near 70 () yesterday, I'm now under a Winter Storm Warning. Crazy. It's Currently 39 degrees and raining lightly. My mom and I got into this conversation the other day. If the US Government created the law that all US citizens would from today forward need a very small tracking chip placed harmlessly inside their bodies for tracking, security, and/or citizenship purposes, would you be for or against it? I would be for it. This may make people want to not commit crimes because it would be more difficult for them to escape being caught (GPS). Also, what if you only had to scan your arm to prove citizenship? There are many things that I think are good about this. I honestly don't think this would take away from people's freedom. You won't be videotaped or anything. You'll be shown as …

So a few hours ago I was flipping channels between Emeril's Moules a la Mariniere recipe (blegh) and SPEED's Forza Motorsport Challenge infomerical-cum-reality-show, when I happened to come across The O'Reilly Factor. Bill's sharp inward-pointed eyebrows and self-confident smirk just beckoned me to stay a bit longer. And so I did. As popular in these shows, there was a riveting headline. Today's was "Liberals Against Raising Fuel Economy Standards," which was accompanied by a montage of both Pontiac G6 and pump meter stock footage. First he lambasted American automobile manufactuers over an alleged refusal to reduce fuel consumption. To prove his point, he showed Ron Ge…

Low mileage, super-charged, no scratches or dings, slim attractive design. Performs great, but requires premium fuel. Recommend only filling up at Macy’s or Saks otherwise performance not guaranteed. Fuel from other locations may cause failure to start. People afraid of exotic Italian maintenance costs should look elsewhere. Was fun when I first got it, as the maintenance bills piled up, the fun factor went down. Requires synthetic oil. Recently being used by other drivers, but always garaged at home. Requires *HUGE* amount of garage space for the multitude of tires. Has NAV system, but generally drives where it wants, when it wants without regard for the owner. NAV sys…

I think it's time to move to Arizona... This is ridiculous. My Millenia was never perfect in the first place, but damn. Rust, scratches, a ding? Pisses me off. It always had a bit of rust on the right rear fender since I bought it, but it was barely noticeable. As soon as winter came, it started to get worse. After that, I didn't really pay attention to it. Well, yesterday, I happened to look at it and its so much worse, not to mention I now have some on the left side, too. I'll just let the pics speak for themselves. Did the Astro and Safari vans have a lot of issues with build quality. I was at work at Canadian Tire and in 4 hours, 3 people called to ask if we carried a replacement mirror for an Astro. First one I thought was a coincidence, then the second one was on the phone and it started to get me wondering. I had about 2 cases of that last Tuesday I worked. I asked everybody if they had already been in or sent somebody in looking for that but they said no. This is kind of odd because that was just 5 cases in 2 weeks or technically 2 work days. But we didn't carry them so I told everybody to go to the dealer for the new mirror. Has anyone else heard of this happening? The driver'…

I think I've finally succeded in making a definitive list of my next car (yeah, right). It's down to these four: 1. 2001+ Volvo S60 (2.4T or T5 likely) 2. 2004+ Pontiac Grand Prix (GT or GTP) 3. 2000-2003 Nissan Maxima 4. 2002-2006 Nissan Altima (3.5SE or SE-R) The common thing for me in all of these cars is liking the looks, sounds, and powertrains (of the above-mentioned versions) of all of these. These can all be had for around the same price (maybe not the SE-R or T5). So if you were in my shoes, which would you choose. Please be as objective as you can.

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon's top general expressed regret Tuesday that he called homosexuality immoral, a remark that drew a harsh condemnation from members of Congress and gay advocacy groups. In a newspaper interview Monday, Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had likened homosexual acts to adultery and said the military should not condone it by allowing gays to serve openly in the armed forces. In a statement Tuesday, he said he should have focused more in the interview on the Defense Department policy about gays — and "less on my personal moral views." He did not offer an apology, something that had been demanded by gay rights groups. "Ge…

Lately I've been in this strange mindset of trying to change things to get it all fresher. What do I mean? It seems that since cell phones have taken off, driving has gotten worse. Last weekend alone, the same chick in a SUV almost nailed me as we were both turning into the curb cut for the Starbucks parking lot AND as she was maneuvering for a parking spot. I look for clarification. She was straddling the cell phone with her shoulder, yapping away. I honestly wonder what could be so important that people are on their cell phones in their cars constantly. At any rate, most close calls have involved others' cell phone use, it seems. I prefer to use a land line. If I decide to have a conversation on a cell while in an automobile, I pull over. I will talk on a cell ph…

Our last dog Rosie, a red lab, sadly passed away last september. We have been looking around for another puppy. My mom has been wanting a yellow lab for a long time. We recently found a good breeder who just had a litter of English labs. They are located up north from us, so my uncle who lives up in Morro Bay/SLO took a look at them for us today. We've seen a couple pics of the puppies, but my uncle took some more. My uncle was actually the one who found us our last dog as well, and he picked up Rosie's sister (who was a black lab who also passed away). My uncle picked up a yellow lab puppy last year which sadly died in a tragic accident, and since then he adopted an old…

At about 6pm saturday night the Ute was travelling down a 50kmh zone (at an eyewitness estimated speed of between 150 and 200kmh). They have gone through one of Kalgoorlie's notorious spoon drains and launched into the air. Upon bouncing back to earth something broke and the driver lost control, jumped the curb and impacted the tree pictured. It has literally torn the ute in half , seperating fuel tank, rear firewall, tray, bumpers and tray liner. The owner of the ute is just 18 and hasn't had the car for long. He wasn't driving. An age unknown friend was, and witnesses say they both appeared to be drunk. Initial reports were that the owner was out of the ute yelling a…

Onstar has a lot of nice benefits, to be sure. In particular, I like the lockout protection, emergency notification, and telephone service. But I am feeling a bit uneasy about the monthly email diagnostic report, showing the mileage at the time, oil life index, and other diagnostic checks. I am half afraid to drive my truck the way I want to drive it for fear of being watched. If I want to do a burnout for some reason, or even exceed the speed limit... could this information that's being gathered be used against me, for example, if I have a warranty issue in the future? Don't get me wrong, I am not going to beat the hell out of my new truck, I love it too much to abu…

Ok so im in the market to get a new car.... mainly because I am now doing website work for a used dealership and I can get a car from them for auction price. My selections are a VW R32, and Audi A4 3.0 Quattro 2003, and Subaru STI and a Pontiac GTO 2004. All are fairly comparable in gas mileage and options and the like, but this will be my daily driver and I need to figure out which will be better expense-wise (cost of parts, gas, bang for the buck, utility and versitility. Heres a link to the last site i used to compare them on kelleys.... but if anyone owns them or has an opinion feel free to share. http://www.kbb.com/KBB/CompareNewCars/SBSC...amp;ModelId=251 P.S…

Yeah, I forgot about it being the first day of DST until I logged on this morning and my computer had the new correct time. I guess the earlier change to DST came in a Windows update I downloaded at some point? Anyway y'all, Rock out with your clock out! Be on time! The first few days of this I always feel robbed of an hour until I get used to it.

Don't know where else in the forum to ask this...so... 1. How can GM run the p[lant that builds the sky-solstice profitably when they are only selling 1500 cars or so a month? Just curious. 2. Anybody know anything about the Baltimore plant? Have there been more than one plants in Baltimore? My 55 Chrolet 210 2 door was built in Baltimore and my 97 GMC Safari Van was built in Baltimore. Notieced that GM no longer has a plant there. Also, is this the same plant that built the 69 custom S pontiac that one of our forum members owns? 3. I owned for a very long time a 71 Chevelle that was built in Texas. When was this plant closed? 4. SSR production is stopped, r…

When I talk to someone about buying American cars, the subject always falls back to "I bet the TV that you are watching in not made in America, so what's wrong with owning a Camry?" There is only one response to this "apples/oranges" retort; "If there was an American made TV, I would buy it. But our government and big business has sold out almost EVERY manufacturer to other countries, that I CANNOT BUY an American made and owned TV, even if I wanted to." As far as vehicles go (probably the second largest purchase most of us dwindling middle-class Americans will make) I can make a conscious effort to purchase a car from an American-owned company, one of the last items w…

I was wondering what would be an interesting small-block or big-block to drop into an 89 Dodge Dakota? It is that old Dakota Sport I found a while a go. It needs work but I am trying to give my teacher ideas for a custom Dakota. For our next school project, he wants to rice up a Civic so I need something that could turn him away from that. What motors would fit? I was thinking something bigger than a 350. A 454 would be interesting but would it fit? One could be easily pulled from an older pickup around here. Just give me suggestions as to what may fit or what would work nicely. GM motors as well as Mopar suggestions would both work. My idea is to lower it, rear disc brak…

One of the teams I'm cheering to make the playoffs, the Isles-just lost one of their better players (and a fave of Mine) What the hell was Chris Simon thinking???!! Like him or hate him, he is one of the reasons they should make the playoffs this year. I'm glad the other guy is ok though....though it looks like Simon might not be coming back....ever. Why?

from melodicrock.com This is ridiculous - they can't just go into the studio together and jam. Everything has to involve lawyers, contracts, and paperwork. They're a joke that's been running for 11 years....remember when they used to be such a tight, yet carefree party band (with both Dave and Sammy)? You have to feel sorry for their fans, they've been teased way too many times.

General Motors and Toyota were once neck-and-neck when it came to developing high-mileage gasoline-electric hybrid cars. About a decade ago, you see, both firms had cracked the code on how to engineer a hybrid, and GM even had a running prototype. But the new technology was so costly that the automakers would have had to initially sell hybrids at a loss to build a market for them. The differing paths the two companies took symbolize why Toyota has become wildly profitable in the United States while GM has been losing its shirt in its home market. And why Toyota, riding GM's bumper, is likely to pass it this year to become the world's biggest car company. In addition to t…

I ran into a friend of mine last night and he presented a business card showing that he worked for the local Nissan dealer. Obviously he doesn't know that I am such a domestic car enthusiast and supporter. My other friend I was hanging out with said "What the hell man? Why don't you sell american cars?" because he knew that I would probably shred the guy if he didn't inject a little comedy. The guy says, and I quote: "Actually, 70% of Nissans parts are manufactured in america and the point of final assmebly is also in america. So, pretty much the last time Nissan was a japanese car was 2000." My jaw dropped and the guy finished with "People are really concerned abo…

WASHINGTON - Gasoline prices have jumped above $3 a gallon in some parts of California and Hawaii, and may hit that level in other parts of the country when the busy summer driving season approaches. “It kills me,” said Gloria Nunez, 53, as she filled her Ford Explorer SUV at a San Jose gas station. Nunez, a clerk for a communications company, has started working a couple hours of overtime each week to help soften the blow. “All of a sudden you kind of have to watch your pennies,” she said. Analysts say drivers should brace for more increases in the coming weeks. Crude oil, which makes up about half the price of gasoline, is trading above $60 a barrel. Higher demand, r…

I can't take it anymore. I have to get a new computer and I need it soon. This POS desktop of mine is hinging on my last nerve: the slowness, the loudness, the slowness, the ancient (by today's standards) monitor, the slowness, the fact that if I so much as touch the tower, the computer will inexplicably black out and require a hard reset (I'm not kidding) and did I mention the slowness? Then there's the laptop with a dead keyboard, dead touchpad, several dead LEDs, and a line of dead pixels in the corner of the screen. Plus, it's thick and heavy as hell, the battery life sucks (which wouldn't be that much of an issue if the AC jack worked properly...which it doesn't) a…

So, next week I am headed off to Denver for a few days. I'm leaving Tuesday night and am coming back on Sunday morning. A cousin of mine lives down there and since I have the week off from school, and don't have a ton of work to do on the farm, I thought I would take a few days and take a trip. I talked the girl I am kinda seeing into coming with me, and besides a trip down to Colorado Springs on Friday to visit a friend of our's, we have no idea what else we might be doing. So...any of you that have been to or live in the Denver area, what are some cool things to see while there? I'm driving down there in the Suburban, so it is going in for an oil change and a t…

I've been thinking lately - I can't wait for Ford to fold. The sooner they do, the less likely it is that GM will do the same. The UAW will have to make some kind of concession if Ford folds. Maybe then GM could compete. Would this work? Will it come to this? What do you think?
