AKA: "Everybody's looking for something" ... Eurythmics ... 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)' Though I've always "strongly disliked" that "how do you see yourself in...." question because it can remind you of what you have not accomplished, dreams ARE how you see yourself in 5, 10, 15, 20 years.... Thus, some of my dreams: ...get married and have kids (not a chance of either thus far). ...purchase my own home in the outskirts of town (or country ... or small town) with a huge garage. ...add a 1975 Caprice Classic convertible and a 1987 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe to my auto collection. ...host a "permanent" radio show. ..."retire" ... so I can have time to more-fully…

I went to the mall this morning to get my hair did (1 on the sides, 6 on top with a fade), and noticed the parking lot was sort of full. Turns out the SCCA was having an autocross event in a cordoned-off section of the lot. Oh man, was that fun to watch! Mostly ricers with a smattering of domestics, the cars represented a wide range, from a PT Cruiser convertible driven by a middle-aged lady, to a new Z06 driven by a slightly thinner Santa Claus (car sounded WAY HOT going through the cones!), and a Lotus Elise (dude spun it, dummy). There were Cobalt SS/SCs, ION Redlines, a lot of Miatas, Mini Coopers, WRXs and Evos... even an old Lumina Z34 DOHC coupe with a 5 speed!…

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...ml?hpid=topnews As the winds and water of Hurricane Katrina were receding, presidential confidante Karen Hughes sent a cable from her State Department office to U.S. ambassadors worldwide. Titled "Echo-Chamber Message" -- a public relations term for talking points designed to be repeated again and again -- the Sept. 7, 2005, directive was unmistakable: Assure the scores of countries that had pledged or donated aid at the height of the disaster that their largesse had provided Americans "practical help and moral support" and "highlight the concrete benefits hurricane victims are receiving." Many of the U.S. diplomats who rece…

I was just scanning MSN when I saw this piece of BS: Eventually, you get to the Delorenzo article "Hell Freezes over," but first you see a picture that says, "GM: What went wrong. Here's why Toyota became #1 and is likely to stay there." So, apparently GM is now "dead" because they are no longer #1 (for the first quarter, I might add). WTF? This is the most deceiving headline I've seen in quite a while, and to say that GM is now "dead" because they were outsold by Toyota by a relatively small margin in the first quarter in global sales is ridiculous. Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes, VW, and every other carmaker besides Toyota must be dead too. And until r…

Frankly, I' like some cheaper insurance, please. What I'm thinking: 1- Keeping my insurance as is for now ( I have AAA). My agent told me that cheaper rates are on the way. I know AAA is on the higher end, but one thing that has impressed me about them is that I have had great service, which is hard to find. I also believe you shouldn't always run to the cheapest rate all the time, because I have seen friend burned by doing just that.. 2-Taking a risk and trying something new (I pan to shop around anyways). I would like to find a company that I could stick around with for a while.....I'd rather pay a few extra bucks a month than pay out the butt for/after an accid…

Well boys and girls, I haven't had my truck running very well for quite some time. I tore the carburetor off, tore it apart, and well, the power valve was blown out. So I replaced it, put the carb back together, snotted it back onto the truck, got the adjustments back together, and cranked it up. It ran like a bloody top! It feels so wonderful to have my truck back in proper working order. It runs, purrs, roars, snorts, and well, I have to curse it every now and again, but it works GREAT! I'm going to be driving it to the local cruise in this Saturday night (by the way, also my birthday), so y'all wish me luck, I should have lots of pictures of the event, and of cou…

....French Poodles perk up cock their head to the side. It's so much fun owning this car. Everyone stares at it, old men & women with arthritis stand up and work through the pain to tell me their personal stories of 1959 Buicks or 1957 Buicks or 1949 Chevys. So far I've averaged about two conversations with strangers every time I've taken out the car, & the Datsun has not moved a mile in the past two weeks. Yesterday I had a short interesting conversation with the G/F's Grandmother's neighbor about the Buick... then I got a hearty thumbs up and air horn from a truck driver in a red Peterbilt 379 with high rise smoke stacks. But then,…

Jeff Gordon won the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix last night. The win was Gordon's 76th career victory, tied him with the late Dale Earnhardt for 6th on the all time list. Gordon also won the pole for the race giving him 59, that ties him with Darrell Waltrip for 4th on the all time list. All but one race this season has been won by a Chevy driver. Only the race at California speedway was won by another manufacturer, when Matt Kenseth driving a Ford won the race. Here is the finishing order from Phoenix. 1 24 Jeff Gordon Chevrolet DuPont 2 20 Tony Stewart Chevrolet The Home Depot 3 11 Denny Hamlin Chevrolet FedEx Kinko's 4 48 Jimmie Johnso…

Extended warranties - are they a good idea? I bought the GMPP for my 1992 Regal. The car had 3/36 but I got coverage up to 6 yrs and 72,000 miles. I NEVER had to use it once! I guess I should have been mad, but I would have had to pay beaucoup bucks for an air conditioning compressor and such had they gone out. OK, now I'm on the cusp of the new car purchase (in the fall, when I get back from Europe). If I snag a 2006 (some are still around), powertrain is 3/36 so I'd go 72 months again. If I snag a 2007 or 2008, powertrain is 5/100, so the extra year is more for the other accessories...which can be expensive...but I'd still go 72 months. Questions: Have you bo…

Australia is in the midst of a crippling drought, the country's worst on record. Many towns and cities have been forced to enact drastic water restrictions as reservoirs have run dry. Rivers have been reduced to a trickle. The drought has severely damaged the agricultural sector. Farmers are raising emaciated cattle and sheep. Cotton-lint production has plummeted. Wine grape and rice output has collapsed. Agricultural production has fallen by almost one-quarter in a year. And it is estimated that the drought has knocked three-quarters to 1 per cent off the country's growth as a whole. And now the government is reaching for desperate measures. Australia's Prime Minister,…

Well, guys, this is what I came across today... I mean, the guy seems sincere. He says he's found a car he likes and he went as far as to purchase it, but I don't know. He's almost bought cars before, and he technically hasn't taken delivery of this one. Some guy could knock on his door at midnight tonight and sell him a silver 2005 GTO for $500. All he has to do is get a replacement for the busted steering column and scratch out the VIN. Heck, I'll throw in the Illinois plates for free. So, in short, Amer_Rev says he's done car shopping. Should I buy it?

BLACKSBURG, Va. - At least 22 people were killed Monday in a shooting rampage on the Virginia Tech campus, police said. They said the gunman was among the dead. In addition to those killed, officials said at least 28 people were wounded. Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said the gunman was dead, but that he didn't know how he died. "Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18134671/ Just senseless!!!

I've had this idea for a while, a thread about the different smells of classic cars. Every one of my "classic" cars has had a different smell. The 68 Camaro, 64 Olds, 59 Buick, even the 70s junk I've had... they all have a very distinct smell to them, I'd say my favorite is the Super 88's interior. It's devine. The seats & rugs all smell like a million dollars. It still smells NEW, if 2007 new cars smelled this good they'd suck a lot less. Any cars you've owned that smelled good? Can you tell the differance between a 1930/1940/1950/1960/1970 car? How about GM versus Mopar versus FoMoCo? One of the most depressing things about a fully restored car…

For all the coolness of a car that goes 180 mph, that has about as much relevance to the average driver in this country as a 180-foot yacht. Accelerating from a start, on the other hand, is sort of legal in every state in the U.S., barring law-enforcement officers with an inflated sense of purpose (don't ask how we know about "Unsafe Start" statutes). Below are the 10 quickest vehicles available with a base price between $25K and $30K, ranked in order of 0-to-60-mph time. Ties were settled first by quarter-mile time, then by which was quicker to the highest speed both cars achieved (usually 120 or 130 mph), in that order. Most cars at this price point offer basic luxury …

I'm wondering if you guys do this to. There are certain cars that, with my eyes closed, I can identify simply by noises they make. List the car and describe the sounds that you can identify. Honda 4-cylinders - sound on startup Mitsubishi 4-cylinders - sound when engine revs <they have a very unique whine to them> Chrysler FWD automatics - sound when decelerating to a stop. GM 3800s - start up, engine rev GM Quad4 with low oil - has a very unique engine knock after it's been abused. Ford 302s - very unique, unrefined, start up sound Northstar V8 - unique startup sound GM 5.3 - idle... though I'm not sure that I've not mistaken a 6.0 for a 5.3

I love the National Post coverage of this today. Terence Corcoran rails against the stupidity. He quotes the Ontario Environment Minister as saying,"It's the equivalent of taking 200,000 cars off the road." Terence points out that Ontario adds 250k vehicles a year to the road. Isn't it funny that once one loony government (Australia) jumps on the band wagon, others are sure to follow? When I was in Brazil, nobody used incandescent bulbs, most buildings had motion detectors (in our hotel we would often walk into a darkened hallway), yet brown outs were common. Finally back from Carlisle. Got the car there ok, just had to re-wash it thanks to the rain. Then I got stuck (parked -in) at the registration area for at least an hour and a half. Finally got out and did a quick round through the grounds, got some good pics. Then, I got the call that the NOS hood for the camino had finally showed after over a month of waiting- and it is a complete piece of $hit. Bent and dented and even rusted-through in a few spots! I was looking at the pictures people are posting, sometimes with family members. The question of similarities and dissimilarities was brought up. I thought this would be an interesting topic. I put down "blended - more father" because when I went to upstate NY to meet part of my family on Dad's side, they had never seen me and we met at a mall to guide me back to the house in their subdivision with a bunch of cul-de-sacs, they picked me out and said "you look just like a (Dad's family surname)." But, then, a few features look like those on my Mom's brothers who, unfortunately, I can't stand! What about you? Which parent do you resemble more/most?

I'm working on a research paper for Social Psychology. Basically we have to make a paper about a social phenomenon of sorts and make an experiment to prove for it or against it. We make an experiment up although we don't test it for real we make the conditions realistic. As well as expected outcomes. Naturally I chose America's bias against American cars (and to an extent, badge snobbery). Here's how it breaks down: There will be 2 groups of people selected that are of various age and genders, and own or believe that Japanese cars are superior to their American counterparts, although no little about cars themselves (such as distinguishing car types). Group A will be…

Do you work well under pressure? For a class tonight, I had to turn in a paper in the 7 to 10 page range. This is a more conceptual management class, so it had no numbers. (I like the objective ones better, actually). Last night at about 11 pm, I started a scratch outline. This morning at 6 am, I had no paper in process. It was due at 5:30 pm. I kicked into overdrive at about 2 pm, and walked in at 5:35 pm. It's all adult-type working students, so it didn't matter. I made it. I always get through, but I hate it. The eating at a diner and writing and all that stress to make a deadline. I always plan out "boxes of time" in advance but don't stick to them. …

A while back, the GMC dealership sent me a letter for a free maintenance service, which I appreciated, being a new customer. Two Saturdays ago, I went in and had my first oil change and tire rotation. I was there at 8 a.m. for my appointment. About 20 minutes later, they pulled my truck into the shop. I ended up being there for about an hour and 20 minutes total. It was Saturday, I didn't have big plans, so ok. Everyone was courteous. -What is this today that we face in America? Many sad things, Toyota Camry best selling car in America. Al Gore writing his bull$h! global warming book, Michael Moore making fun of America in his documentary... Some America, I'll say. Old farts trading beautiful LeSabres for Prius's, people selling Montana's and getting Corolla's in this day and age anything is possible. We face people so blinded by how great hybrids are, that they have there own list of enviormental problems, like dissposing of those acid filled batteries? When we get right down to it, cheese-burgers, apple-pie and Chevy are true American icons. Tree huggers try to make us "hate" th…

Disturbia It is one of those few films that is so much more than one that is meant to be scary, and at PG13, I am afraid that too many people would let this slip off from their radars as any sort of a "must see". Within the first 15 minuted of this film I laughed, cried *honestly*, felt rage, and sympathy. One is able to see how the characters are developed as one is introduced to them, learn about them, and see how they change. I would highly recommend seeing this production, but make sure you take someone with you, otherwise, the opening sequence is very hard.

A '93 Honda CB750. Not fully a sport bike, not really a cruiser either, but I think it's a pretty cool combination. Powerful little thing too. ---original post--- Hint 1: 1993 model Hint 2: 4 cyl Hint 3: He didn't sell his Grand Prix Hint 4: It's a '93 4-cyl Honda, but I'm happy for him and not upset. So... what is it?

As if we don't have enough media bias to contend with... I usually listen to NPR (National Public Radio) on Saturdays, and sometimes I tune in to "Car Talk", a very slightly humorous show where people call in with their car problems and these two goofs, "The Tappet Brothers", try to diagnose them. They also use "humor" to convey some serious information and try to shape opinion. I was incensed yesterday to hear one of them mention some emails they received after a listener bragged on his "350,000 mile Lexus". They said they were sure there were no domestic cars that could go that long. One of the responses was from a listener with a '68 Buick Sportwagon with over 700,…

Approved by NASCAR for competition in 2007, the Chevrolet R07 is making its debut this weekend in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. I'm driving home after lunch and realize that my odometer is about to roll over to an even number (you know, ending at ,000)...but it wasn't quite there. So, I didn't pull into the driveway and instead drove around the neighborhood a little more to make it get to that "magic number." I find that I've done this more than once, among other weird quirks. Do you do this kind of crap with your car? Or, do you have other weird quirks you care to share?

I found a link to this on another site and just had to post it...please enjoy the humor in this site and don't turn this thread into a political bash fest. This website is not a joke either, sadly. Wikipedia on Conservapedia Conservapedia on dinosaurs Conservapedia on gravity Conservapedia on the automobile Conservapedia on Mexico Conservapedia on Russia Conservapedia on Ecuador Conservapedia on the French Revolution I got some of these off the thread at Skyscraperpage...apparently Conservapedia has cleaned up spelling and factual errors since this was first posted in early March, but it's still funny nonetheless.

WOW! I happened to be working on something else and got around to some web-surfing because my "leadership ethics" chapters get boring every once in a while. Somehow, I got onto the Presidential electiong prognostications. In a nutshell, nobody that I consider to be fairly conventional is in a front runner position. This leaves me perplexed. On the Democratic side, Hillary is a obviously a woman and Obama is obviously of mixed race. Not only that, there are so many other contenders that no one knows how their pie will be split up. On the Republican side, Giuliani has had an interesting personal life in terms of number of marriages and Romney from Mass. is Mormon, wh…

I just looked on the Toronto Craigslist and Toronto Kijiji and I found 2 interesting cars. One, a 1987 Pontiac Firebird Formula and a 1989 Buick Lesabre T-Type. Both equal in price and both need body work and some other work. Firebird needs interior work and the Lesabre needs brake work. The seats would eventually need to be reupholstered since the leather shows its age but isn't ripped. WHat do you think? I really love the Lesabre T-Type but would it be worth restoring in the long run? Here are the links to the listings. 1989 Lesabre T-Type 1987 Firebird Formula

We have a Prius in the shop with over $7k in front end damages. We needed to order some fairly obscure parts for it, and things were sort of slow today for drive-in estimates, so I took the damaged parts down to the local dealer to help out their parts guys. While I was there I had a service question our technician wanted me to ask, so I stopped by the service counter: "Hello, I work at "" in the bodyshop, and we have a Toyota... oh, what model is it... the golf cart one? PRIUS! That's it. We need to know the cooling system capacity so we can make sure everything's right when our customer picks it up. Can you help me with that?" "Uh... sure sir, let me look that u…

Yes , I know that you all know I hate them. But, I also know not all of you do - so I have a question. What FWD cars (if any) do you think will be collected and preserved a decade or two down the road? Will any of these be someone's pride and joy at the local car show? If so, which ones? Even I can think of one...

I read some good posts by hyperv6 in the GM RWD thread and figured it would be good to start a whole new topic where people could post their opinions and links to articles that might be of interest. Here's a great article about global warming being a political and power play from the Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...6070400789.html I have a friend who is an extreme liberal...I've been living with him here in Rome for the last four months and I reluctantly get to hear him reading articles aloud every day from CNN and wherever else he gets articles on global warming paranoia. Half of the people in my architecture major follow this same typ…

If you remember a month or so ago my friend's (younger) sister was car shopping. This is the one who's dad is anti-American when it comes to cars. When she got the car finally...within a week she started bashing American cars and that that Civic was the greatest. Well tofday he told me she was on her way to work, and was near Boston...when the car wouldn't accelerate above 20 mph! It's in some shop near wheerever it was left and will cost $400 or so to fix. My friend doesn't know what's wrong with it yet...but he laughed pretty hard (serves her right for being so bias). Keep in mind that she paid 8 grand for this car...and at the time it was missing the wiper motors…

MOre accurately, part of the end-of-semester college experience. I've been up working on my 3D animation since 9 or so..I was lucky enough to get a 3 hours nap...which is why I'm still able to maintain consciousness. On top of my 3D final I'm working on (critique due today), I have a social psychology paper due next week, probably 20 or so essays do for aesthetics (plus the final), and a photography project due Monday...then the final for that class. I also have a test in science next week. College...it sucks this time of year. Any of you guys experiencing this fun too? ...I see daylight....

I used to psychologically squeeze by at $ 2.99 a gallon. Now, it's clearly above $ 3.00. It has definitely changed my driving habits. I was never a lead-foot to begin with, but now I am more cognizant about my RPMs...I try to keep them nice and low at cruise. But, more so than this, I noticed I am driving less...by just not going somewhere or grouping errands. The reason I think about this is that it is really $h!ty for the economy. Malls, restaurants, dry cleaners and such depend on you getting into your car as much as you did before to keep their business operations on par with previous years. You know that people are driving somewhat less and…

I got a stone chip on my windshield, and it's noticeable and expanding. I went to a windshield place last time, and the guy said he can do it, and claim insurance for me. I'm too scared to actually deal with the insurance, who might raise my premiums if I have any claims. The cost of fixing it was like 70 bucks. Anyone had claims like these and end up getting their premium raised?

I was looking forward to Easter weekend to go up to my Mom's in Portland to be "pampered" a little bit. At any rate, I "turn in" in the downstair's bedroom (the guest room) where my Dad spent his last years so he didn't have to do the stairs and couldn't fall asleep! The damn mattress was ridiculously FIRM. My own mattress is somewhat firm, but it softens up nicely to adjust to body contours and the shifting of your weight. (Nothing special, just a $ 450 set). That right amount of sponginess, together with flannel sheets, and I'm asleep in 5 to 10 minutes as if I was under anesthesia. So, the mattress in my Mom's guest room screwed up my Easter weekend. What typ…
