With the recent gas prices spiralling have been doing a non scientific experiment to find out how much driving habits can change the fuel economy. Reading those news about people getting 50 mpg in a regular four banger Accord makes you think how do people claim this surreal number. Is it true or it is a banal trick played by the import humpers. Websites like these Gas Savers make me try to validate this claim. So here goes my experiment. I will just give the data, you folks decide what to claim from it. The Precursors: 1. I keep a pretty close if not up to the decimal tab on my fuel economy numbers. For the previous miles, before the experiment, my three cars have aver…

Well, in a couple of hours I'll be heading off to France for the month of June. I'm going through my university's study abroad program; I'll be staying with a host family in Rennes and living a more cultured life for a few weeks. I probably won't have Internet over there, so hopefully I don't miss anything major.

So, I've seen a couple horrible things as of late, and I thought I'd share my pain. The first one was an Element with a "Hummer H0.5" badge. The second was a Shadow with a grille from a 95-02 Sunfire slapped on top of its own. The Shadow grille is pretty much vertical, with a horizontal bumper below it - So the Sunfire grille laid above both, making a 45 degree angle to each, with big triangular holes on both sides where the grille didn't line up with the rest of the car. Awful. NSX with red Honda badge. Why do people do this? You don't see anyone putting a Chevy badge on a Cadillac.

Sixty8, you should know what I found, a 1981 Chrysler Imperial Frank Sinatra Edition. It is located in New York and is on Ebay. I have already contacted the seller because I find this a nice and desirable car. For me it is a must have. Classy and there was 148 built in 81. So far it is at $800. I will see what the buyer says because I want to bring it back to Canada but I may have time to meet up with some members if I do. SHipping is too expensive so we would rent a U-Haul or borrow our friends flatbed to bring it over. Just depends if the buyer will sell it to Canadians. If not then I will be extremely mad because these are rare. It is such a good price too for what …

Hi all, I had thorghly enjoyed my ownership experience with my Malibu SS over the last year. Then my brother Got a Mustang and my folks got an Aura and I feel like I have the bland car of the family. The aura destorys the malibu in every way, sick powertrain blows away the 3900 4 speed combo, better styling and features for the price. My brothers Mutang has a deffinet cool factor and the RWD is great though the 4.0 V6 in it is pretty crappy and it has a solid axel and is a ford. So I was thinking what I would do to replace the malibu if I did take the plunge and this is the scheme I came up with IF I decided to get a new car. I decided the only way to …

Import Humper... Buys American! One of the guys I work with was telling us Friday how he was going to go out and buy a car. Told the guys on the crew that a Honda was not good enough for him and only an Acura would do. Kevin Laughed in my face when I told him he might consider domestic cars. Told me I was nuts for even thinking it. So this morning in the parking lot before work, we are all shooting the bull and drinking coffe and...Kevin rolls up in a metallic red Mustang GT convertible. Says he loves it and thanks me for suggesting American products. He told me it was really obvious American products had improved dramatically. Too bad the Camaro and Challeng…

Struggling computer company to shed 10 percent of its workforce. DALLAS - Dell Inc. said Thursday that earnings fell slightly in preliminary first-quarter results, and the computer maker planned to lay off more than 8,000 employees over the next year as part of an ongoing restructuring. Dell said it earned $759 million, or 34 cents per share, in the three months ended May 4. That compared with $762 million, or 33 cents per share, in the year-ago period. First-quarter sales rose nearly 1 percent from the year ago period to $14.6 billion. Analysts, on average, expected earnings of 26 cents per share on sales $13.95 billion, according to a poll by Thomson Financial. Del…

I was looking at this car on Ebay for a while and I don't have a log-in there and can't anyways because it is the American site. I really want to know the email or somewhere to contact this person. I am really tempted to buy it because, it is good condition and I believe these are quite a rare package. I have only seen one before and it didn't have those rims either. I know I have the taste of someone not 16 but these are sweet cars. I would really like a RWD Lesabre that won't break the bank. I know it says reserve not met but I would like to find out the reserve. ANd yes I did see the plaid interior. Here it is. 1979 Buick Lesabre West Palm Beach edition

Well as most of you know, I live in Delaware, but I don't buy my new cars here, I go to Elkton, Maryland and buy my cars from Anchor Pontiac. They are a great dealership that treats you like family and they go the extra mile. Oh from where I live I can be in 3 different states in about 15 minutes, so going to Maryland is no big deal. Maybe we could use this list if our C&G members find themselves out of state and in need of a reliable dealership to go to. Cheers! My dealer's website: http://www.anchorpontiac.com/en_US/

Nothing was wrong with my 4 1/2 year old MDG (Canadian brand) desk top. It has a DVD burner that I added 2 years ago, 256 graphics card, operates at 1.7 ghz, has 768 mb RAM, operates on XP, but I was working on putting all my MPEG-4 movies from my trips to Brazil onto a DVD, interspersed with my digital pics , maybe even a soundtrack, but this proved to be impossible with the old system. Roxio and I had a falling out about 3 weeks ago, resulting in my smashing the original program discs into a million pieces (while my horrified partner and our dog watched), then uninstalled anything to do with Roxio. I was a little on edge Thursday, as I would be taking the Regal, with some 236,000 miles on it, up to Portland OR to park it in Mom's garage as I go to Europe and then come back to relocate/job hunt. I had a sensor and a tie rod end replaced the week prior, so I had spent some money on it. The tie rod cured the slight shimmy, but there was still a road drone which was atypical and it changed with the movement of the steering wheel. I said "WTF, I'm setting out on the 600 mile journey." As I got past Mt. Shasta, it got a little louder. About 20 miles south of Eugene OR, it started sounding like a helicopter and it was 8 pm. I proceeded at 50 to 55 mph, with the truc…

So, yeah, this is something I'm struggling with right now, and I'm not sure where to go from here. Long story short - I've been crazy about this girl for a long time, but for one reason or another we've been missing each other. I find out from her friend that she started seeing someone about 4-5 weeks ago and they're "official". Unlike any other time I've fallen for someone, I feel this one is worth putting it all on the line for. Countering that emotion, however, is my sense of right and wrong, coupled with the fact that I don't want to piss off her friend, since she in not so many words told me not to bother. So there you have it, the cliff's notes version. I might go i…

I think I may have financially overextended myself a bit. It's sad really, when I think about it. I bought one of the cheapest condos I could find in Toronto. Half the loan is from my grandfather, at a better-than-bank rate. Half the loan is at 6% from the bank, which is fairly decent. My car is pretty basic too, I'm sure you'll all agree. Selling it and getting an older one wouldn't really solve my problems, since insurance is the main issue. Last month I had to pay my grandfather his interest for the year, and now I'm finding myself really in a bind. I'm going to have to roll up all my change and take it to the bank so that the money is there when GMAC goes to ta…

My '59 Buick today burned off most of a tank of gas. At 6:00am I dopped off the two couples at Logan foir their flight to Mexico. At 12:00 I picked up Sofia at the fromer in-laws in Harvard, MA & then at 1:00 we arrived at a Birthday party in Lowell. Then a few hours later at 5:00 I dropped off Sofia in Haverhill with my parents & hit Rt.495 for the 4th time today. All of a sudden I see pink slime... (dexcool) pouring out of the hood seams and my temp. gauge is at a solid "pull the f**k over and shut her off" So apparently that used, rebuilt water pump I just installed was crap. This is partially my fault for taking the gamble with it,…

The 3rd annual Keeneland carshow was today. Featured make was the Corvette, all makes and trims welcome for the Corvette, so there were supposedly over 200 Vettes at the show. I took pictures of the classic ones, since any of us can usually walk outside and see a C4/C5/C6. Strangely, there were no C6 Z06's, which struck me as odd. Also at the show were 5 Corvette Concepts on loan from the GM Heritage Museum: Mako Shark, Mako Shark 2, Aerovette, Sting Ray 2 and Sting Ray 3. BEAUTIFUL cars. Here are my pictures!

You're out of town and you're bored....or actually interested....in CARS. So you go down to the local car dealership that has the brands you like to look around. Am I the only one that does this? I hope not. Well, when I do, I always preface any approach with "I'm not local...not from the area. I'm just looking." This way, they don't "invest" their time in me. This weekend, I went out of town in a rental car. I see a B-P-GMC dealer and decide to stop to peruse the inventory, seeing there were some GPs and LaXs. I was dressed in shorts, t-shirt and sandals and, as the salesman approached, I said "I'm not from the area. I'm just looking around." So, I proceeded t…

BLACK. Ok, it's appropriate for some cars in that it makes them look sinister or elegant. This is a given. I don't like it because it doesn't highlight a car's good styling lines, is hard to keep clean and, to some extent, is less safe than a lighter colored car....you almost always see a white car at night, even though that's not quite my favorite color. Your least favorite car color?

My wife's car (99 Pontiac Grand Am GT with 67000miles) has been enjoyable, but troublesome. Recently her 7th power window lifter failed. My wife decided to complain to GM customer service about this car. I told her that she was nuts. Manufacturers give warranties to limit there liability/responsibility. Not too surprisingly they were polite to her. I figured a sympathetic ear was all she would get. The young lady on the phone started gathering information!! She contacted the independent garage where we had the last two windows replaced. Then she moved on to the servicing dealer gathering more documentation. At each step she would call my wife and assure her that …

Casey Mears won NASCAR's longest race, the Coca-Cola 600, last night using fuel milage to beat out the top contenders. A long green flag run at the end of the race saw the expected front runners have to pit for fuel while Mears stayed out and held on over the final 8 laps to win. This race marks Chevy's 11th win out of the 12 races so far. Casey Mears' car owner Rick Hendrick has seen his teams win 9 of those. With me looking to turf my Dahlia Blue 1997 Cavalier, and am looking to buy something new this fall... I've short listed it to a few choices, most with the 3.1L V6 as it is relatively efficient, and I need some advice to prioritize my list before I talk to my used car guy. Well, it's been awhile since I've posted anything... And I'm sorry to say this, but... Actually, I'm not sorry at all. My mom's getting rid of her '05 Durango because Friday we went and picked her up a 2007 Rendezvous! If you haven't been keeping tally, let me clarify the impact this makes: my dad was looking for a new vehicle a year or two ago and I convinced him to pick up an '05 Grand Prix instead of a Stratus Coupe. Then, I went and bought myself a 2006 Cobalt SS Supercharged. And, on top of that, my mom just leased out this '07 Rendezvous. I did it Monday night. I was breaking down a cardboard box to get it to fit in the garbage can, and it came up and nailed me in the right eye. Tuesday morning it was absolutely excruciating - it wouldn't stay open or stop tearing. I went to the hospital, and they sent me home with a prescription for antibiotic eyedrops and two Percocets (stupid pills). I spent most of Tuesday and yesterday in little to no light. Today is the first day I can tolerate a computer screen without pain. My vision is still blurry and will take a week to heal, so no riding this weekend.

We will have to go get it and tow it back. It is only $1100 and needs emergency brake cables to be certified. The only other thing needed is bodywork to be done. There is some rust. The vinyl top and interiors are mint and all the chrome is as well. Plus it is a hardtop coupe. Here it is 1976 Dodge Royal Monaco hardtop. It would make a good restoration.

This bill was passed a couple weeks ago by President Bush without Congressional approval or oversight; mainstream news has not covered it, in fact most don't even know about it (I found out via a skyscraper forum). Essentially, this bill allows for the "continuity" of America in the event of a catastrophic disaster that would give extraordinary powers to the executive branch, throwing the system of checks and balances out the window. A catastrophic disaster could be another Katrina, 9/11, major earthquake in California, economic depression...you name it. Not only does the executive branch gain more power, but the president can take control of "private sector owners and…

I resigned from one a couple of months ago. I worked there for almost 3 years. The first 2 years were fine, but one day in early 2006, 6 people (the most promising employees) out of 40 quit and started their own firm. (They were guys who hung out together outside of work and did the beer/shooting range thing, so those of us who didn't "fit in" weren't invited along...no hard feelings). About 10 more left during 2006 because the atmosphere had become depressing. I thought about quitting immediately as their work would fall on other people's shoulders and stress everybody out, but I had to consider the following: - a hair under 2 years would not look good on a resum…

It's not nearly as involved as another car. I'll eventually turn this: into a nice road bike. It's an Iron Horse Triumph Comp aluminum/carbon frame and fork, and it was a steal. The sad part is, getting this up and running will most likely involve dismantling my beloved restified Schwinn and retiring her if I can't find a cheap way to keep her complete. She served me well, finishing tied for 5th in a century ride two weeks ago. I'll probably ride the Schwinn through the summer and start hording the parts that I can't transfer over.

this one is going to come completely out of left field for me, but right now I've gone more or less completely stir-crazy. Its been two days and two nights of having the house to myself and its TOO quiet!!!!!! I'm so used to having my wife and girl around the house that spending the past two nights alone has been hell for me. Can't sleep, can't really sit around the house and relax....can't really do anything. Its too quiet and its too peaceful around here!!!! I want them to come home.... I hate this feeling....its really weird.

So Wednesday after work my girlfriend and I had a nice lunch at the park and decided that it would be fun to go to the Interstate Auto Auction...no intentions of buying, just a chance to check out and drive a bunch of cars. We arrived and registered, the went car browsing...we ended up looking at several cars and test driving a few too. Here are some Highlights: Dodge Stealth My this was the first car we test drove, which my girlfriend pointed out shortly after we started looking at cars. This one was Silver, with the stupid Dodge spoiler (I like the Mitsubishi one much better), upgraded brakes, and performance exhaust, and...blue trimmed black interior. Now, I have…

Let me set the scene for you a bit.... We (My girlfriend and I) live in the mountains of NC when we're not at school; it's very rural. In fact, we actually live up on a mountain that overlooks a valley, while on the back side of us is a national forest, water reservoir and black bear habitat. My neighborhood is basically built in a network of old logging roads (which were cut in when our mountain still housed mica mines) one of which has been widened and paved up to my cluster of 7 houses where the road (meaning paved part) dead ends. My family and I live in one house and my grilfriend and her family have been our next door neighbors for years. (Way before we were an "it…

Here's one of mine, the Citroen SM. 3.0l V6 from the Merek, Citroen innovation, and a bit of American panache. Features include swiviling, self-leveling headlamps with glass shielding, self-centering power steering, rainsensing wipers, and the famous hydropneumatic suspension system which delivered a composed but oh-so smooth ride over any terrain. As some regular Top Gear viewers know, Citroens were notably used as camera cars due to ability to glide over rough surfaces. Some Citroens can even reportedly be driven on three wheels thanks to this suspension setup. Just under 13,000 were built, about 2,400 of which were exported to America. When I was about four o…

Holy bajesus what a day! The breeze finally died...radiator leak, water pumped shot, blown head gaskets...$1500 in repairs. My dad feels that it's not worth it so he's donating it. People came to look at the Saturn and loved it. They are having a mechanic come and look at it on Saturday. So we went to the Chrysler dealer to check out the Sebring for my mom. We love it. It's looks so much better in person then in photos and the price is great. 07 Touring with 8 way power drivers seat for under $21k My dad talked to the dealer and he said to come back tomarrow because there's gonna be a huge memorial day weekend sale and the dealer has to move 50 cars. We are proba…

I am eating a light dinner of cheese and an apple. I love extra, Extra, EXTRA sharp cheddar to accompany the taste of the apple. This time, I bought "Heluva Good" brand "New York State Extra Sharp", and bleh, what a let-down. It's mild to the point of being flavorless, and it's way too creamy. I like my extra sharp cheddar to crumble when I cut it. Can anyone relate?

Yeah, yeah, I know...I keep saying I will get a car. I will as soon as I relocate since I have now finished this evening program. And it will be as conventional an automobile as my GM Card money and the difference can buy. However, the car after that will be different. I will try to hang on to my next purchase for a while. But I was thinking: what will dealership lots be filled with in 10 yrs? What do you think? I put down hybrid because it's a technology that will undoubtedly get better. The others are a little too avant-garde though they sure are "green" (did I say that...I didn't eat any granola today). I don't think the infrastructure to support the oth…

Gas boycott

Apparently yesterday was national gas boycott day. Apparently people are dumb enough to believe that if nobody bought gas on May 15th then prices would go down significantly. I went off on an acquaintance about this today, as she insisted it would work and I insisted that the laws of supply and demand say it wont happen. Things like this make me hate the internet, just a way for morons to get other morons to believe crap that anyone who has taken Econ 101 would know is false.

All right guys, I think its time that I get it out. I've wanted a motorcycle since I was about 14, but haven't every been able to procure one. Well, with me and the family moving about 50 miles from my current job site, and the price of gas climbing has finally brought my wife around. She's agreed to let me buy a bike. I've talked to a couple of people who own bikes and they all love theirs, which means I'll probably enjoy the hell out of mine since our personalities are all alike. But here's what I was thinking about buying. something between 1987 and 2007, 650cc-1100, cruiser-type bike, brand isn't preferential (sp?), and most importantly looking to spend no more …

Well yes I am stuck in the 70's with my vinyl record player. I decided to dust it off balance the needle set up the deck and equalizer. Then threw on some old records. I played some Kansas, Eagles, Doors, Cat Stevens, and some Queen. I always never really cared for queen, but after listening to then for a little bit actually the were very talented. Now I am stuck with some songs stuck in my head. Any other 70-80's band you think were talented. Also vinyl record's seem to have a unique audio tone that has never been masted by digital technology but CD's Are 10000000000 times better then vinyl's could ever be.

I met up with my old friend Dustin in Ocean City this weekend. When I left Maryland in 2003, he was working at the dealership there as sort of a gopher. Now, he has his own bodyshop with 3 fulltime employees, and he is specializing in restoration work, hot rods and muscle cars. He and his crew did the paint and bodywork on this flawless Nova, which has been appraised at $300k. Every body seam has been smoothed, the firewall and dash cut out and custom-fabricated, the drip rails have been molded in. Only the best of everything went into this Nova, which was completed 2 years ago. The owner is selling it, and he had nothing but praise for Dustin. I am proud of this k…

One of the highlights of the car hobby for me is the Ocean City, MD Spring cruise-in. It is a spectacular event, a Spring break-out of every kind of hot rod, muscle car, and everything in between automotive. I just reserved a room at the Rehoboth Beach Guest House (closest I could get to OC, everything's full there by now), so I'm set. I'm wondering if anyone from C&G is planning on going, maybe we can meet up. Here's a link: http://www.specialeventpro.com/cruisin.php

That's right long before the EV-1, GM planned to make the mighty Chevette the Electric Car of the future, way back in the 70's! Meet the Electrovette! This ain't your Daddy's Chevette! GM - Quote "The Electrovette is the first of a new series of electric test cars produced by the General Motors Corp. This experimental prototype uses twenty 12-volt maintenance-free batteries weighing 920 lbs (417 kg) which are carried in the rear seat compartment. The suspension system has been re-engineered to handle the additional weight. The two passenger sedan weighs 2,950 lbs (1338 kg) and has a top speed of 53 mph (85 km/hr). Acceleration is zero to 30 mph (48 km/hr) in 8.2 seconds.…

I thought as a point of interest I would post something about the impending subway series in NY. I was born just a bit outside of Queens and have been, for my entire life, a huge Mets fan. Such a huge Mets fan that at the age of 20 I have became a season ticket holder at the begging of this season (with much hard earned cash bartending as my second job.) Even though I've probably been to about 60 Mets games prior to this year I have never been able to get my hands on subway series tickets at a resonable price, or at least not at a price I could afford to pay because I would likely have payed an unresonable price just to go. So as long as it doesn't get rained out…

Check out the wild sound effects. Looks like somebody had too much fun with a keyboard. This reminds me of the video we watched in driver's ed about the dangers of semi trucks....really boring, drawn out, and old (the kids in the movie had mullets if that says anything). I think 3/4 of the driver's ed class slept through that one.

First off, how's everyone doing? I still hang around, but unfortunately don't participate anywhere near the levels I used to. I'm sure I wasn't the only car geek out there that wanted to turn my life's passion into a full-time career. I've been fortunate enough to be involved in this business for quite sometime and have obtained all my auto related positions due mostly to my sheer enthusiasm and understanding vehicles and of the market. Now's here you're chance. There is an opening to work with me (trust me, no big thrill hanging with me) as a forecast analyst for the North American market. If you're interested and preferably live in Michigan and have a strong des…

Ok, maybe it's the second bottle of wine tonight. Two nights in a row, drinking at home. I'm on board with this. All you guy guys say what you want about Patrick Swayze.... that Jennifer Grey, I'd bust that. Damn. Not just once. But maybe a couple 2-3 hundred times. Vastly underrated she was. It's a shame the face didn't match the bod. Then, when she tried to fix it, she went too far and 'bye bye career'. So anyways, the movie itself. Great soundtrack. One of those 'period' movies and 'c…

The "Worst Case Scenario" thread brought back a memory of a TV show that I thought you might all be interested in. FOG was mentioning that it shouldn't be hard to retrofit cars to run on hydrogen. Turns out he's right, as long as the car is carburetted. The show Mythbusters was testing methods of saving fuel. You've all seen the crappy infomercials, so they were testing if any of these products were actually worth money. To test, they had an early 90's Accord, representing fuel injected cars, and a late 70s Oldsmobile Omega, representing carburetted cars. They tried all the fuel saving methods on both cars, and they all failed, some even made the mileage worse. Then the…

Well, I did. I must say, I was/am pissed, dissapointed, extremely shocked (yet slightly expected based off of how people vote, but never actally expected it.) For those of you who do watch American Idol and missed the show: Melinda Doolittle was dismissed. For those who don't: Melinda Doolittle is a 29-year-old (previous) backup singer. She has gone throughout the entire competition with only one 'not-so-hot' comment. Other than that, she was unbelievable! I honestly am really hating Blake, considering that he was the reason Melinda left, and here is the reason: Blake is from Seattle, and beatboxes. His town is obviously well-know and has a large population. So th…
