WTF, right? Check it: >>"For luxury cars with very high sticker prices, depreciation claims more money than it does for mass-market models that cost a lot less to begin with. That's true even for luxury models that retain their value very well. Over five years, the Porsche 911 GT3 — the tenth most expensive car to own — depreciates just 41% from its starting MSRP. By contrast, the Lincoln MKZ, the 10th least expensive-to-own luxury model, sheds about 67% of its base price. But the MKZ sells for around $30,000, compared to $106,000 for the 911 GT3. 67% of $30,000 is a lot less than 41% of $106,000 — that works out to $20,100 versus $43,460, respectively."<< …

hey all, A few weeks ago I talked asked advice wheather I should take a part time sales associate postition at a GM dealer or not. After being thoroghly discouraged from that path, and for good reason I have found emplyoment as a bartender at McFadden's bar in NYC. If anybody for Cheers and gears wnats to show up the nights that I am bartending I'll give lot's of buybacks and freebees. Right now I'm a 'reoccuring guest bartender' and am trying to become regular staff so it's really important that I bring bodies into the place. If anyone is interested I'll post w2hen I find out my schedule.

Automotive News July 30, 2007 - 12:01 am As legislators, regulators and automakers look for ways to improve fuel economy, they must remember that consumers will make the ultimate choices. And that's going to cause a few surprises. One example: Consumers are bidding up the prices of used cars and trucks equipped with fuel-saving diesel engines. That contradicts conventional wisdom, which holds that Americans gave up on diesels in the 1980s. Some environmentalists turn up their noses at diesel engines, but technological advances have made diesels more palatable to U.S. consumers. The Power Information Network estimates that U.S. consumers will buy more than 500,00…

I say Toyota Camry/Avalon or some other non-exciting Toyota. Not saying that Supra, Celica & MR2 drivers are angels but they tend to be about average... not better or worse than most. Me and XP had this conversation after we noticed on a few road trips that about 60-70% of all awkward driving situations were caused by drivers in Toyota cars. They cut people off, have no concept of the blind spot & to make matters worse in some cases they're clueless & jerks. A very bad combination on today's roads. Your feelings on this matter?

http://www.iihs.org/news/rss/pr080207.html video: low-speed crash test results, midsize luxury cars, August 2007 Bumpers on luxury cars aren't luxurious: worst is Infiniti G35; 4 of 11 cars sustain more than $10,000 damage in 4 minor bumps ARLINGTON, VA — Bumpers, even those on expensive cars, don't resist damage in low-speed impacts. The Infiniti G35, the worst performer, sustained almost $14,000 damage in a series of 4 tests conducted at 3 and 6 mph by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Saab 9-3 was the best, sustaining $5,243 damage. Only 3 cars sustained less than $6,000 damage, while 4 would cost more than $10,000 to fix. "The Infiniti was a disaster…

It's a Looong read! So, I lost the friendship of someone that I honestly thought was my best friend over the course of the last month and a half. My former friend's name is Dustin to start off, and we were friends for six years; all through high school and up until this year. I had always questioned his orientation due to things he did, tried to do to me, and what not. Of course, this person was my one "exception to the rule" but I never did anything for my own obvious reasons. Anyway, after an interesting ride back one evening from a local dirt racing track, I had gotten the answer I had wanted. Yes, he was/is a bit of a closet case. One evening around a month …

You're supposed to be able to find anything on the web, but I have searched a few times for this one car and come up empty (looking for pics). Maybe one of you guys knows where it is. There have been, I believe, 4 proposals for a 'new' Duesenberg to date (excluding 'classic repros'). This is the latest, the '06 'Torpedo' (frankly, it's hideous): Here's the '66, which came the closest to production; reportedly 50 were sold, but only 1 was built before legal issues cropped up and things were shut down. The prototype exists in fine shape at the A-C-D museum: This was a '63 proposal from Virgil Exner (he also proposed a number of other 'renewal' classics). Never buil…

I came home a week early. I made it...what an adventure. I had to overnight in London because I came into one major airport (Heathrow) and out of another (Gatwick). At least, I got to see London for an afternoon which normally would have not been part of my plans. It was a likable place, though cleary the most 'EFFIN expensive city I have EVER visited. In short, I had had enough of the heat and humidity, the congestion, the overpriced dinky rental cars and ridiculous gas prices, the fact that I probably spent $ 100 Euros ($ 138 USD) on bottled water in 5 weeks because they don't give you free water in restaurants as you may think, the sensory overload of adjacent cu…

Phone companies. Going to the dogs. I swear. I just spent 52 minutes to an MCI call center in Argentina. I ingratiated myself somewhat by speaking entirely in Spanish, which they fully understood. This is my 6th call to MCI since May and a credit has been issued against the final bill, though 1 call back in May should have sufficed. In short: - called MCI to disconnect on May 17th - had to stay in my place 1 month longer, so I called on May 11th to cancel the disconnect...I thought that 6 days prior was enough time - was told that their "system" did not EASILY allow for order cancellations/adjustments once placed because of the fact that they don't own the lines, …

While I don't agree with, I at least get your stance on FWD, Transverse engines, B-pillars and manual transmissions..... the one I don't get is your aversion to uni-body. There were a few uni-body cars that I'm sure would suit all the rest of your requirements quite nicely.... so I'm curious if your hatred of uni-body would be directed at them as well. I could totally see you pulling one of these out of a barn somewhere to use as a daily driver, yet they're all unibody.

Being home from work today, I had a little time on my hands, so I made this PowerPoint graphic of the '86 Grand Prix 2+2. I will post a pic of the Z06 I did some time ago as well. Nice part about these being PPT graphics is that when you scale them, they stay looking good. Either I need to figure out how to make money doing silly stuff like this or find better things to do with my time.

Bleh, I never set up Word when I got this computer a few years ago. I rarely use it, but yesterday I got an email from my dad about our big family reunion this weekend, and there's a Word attachment with the itinerary I'm supposed to print out. When I try to print it, it says I need to set it up and I need to furnish my "product key", a 25 digit number, which was supposed to be written on the CD case, I guess, or the book... somewhere. That stuff is all gone, I don't know of a way to find that product key now. Can anyone help me set up Word so I can print this document? Many thanks.

Son of a friend was given a nice clean older Bonneville SSE as a high school graduation gift. Only problem was the headliner was loose and he was told he would have to fix it. So the kid gets an air powered staple gun and staples the headliner back in place. ....And then gets out to notice what has happened to the roof of the car. At least his mother is footing the bill to fix the thing. Chris

Perhaps the greatest (and most dangerous) street race I've ever watched....two British-sounding guys in an '06 Z06 take on a Ford GT on metro Detroit freeways during lunchtime traffic. Speeds up to 160 mph. There are so many times where it could have just ended for one of them....just one little lane change by a passing motorist and it's over. Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone could help me make an educated guess on how much per month it would cost top lease an 08 CTS that had an MSRP of about 45k. I'd be open to either 24 or 39 month leases though I would prefer the 24 month. my goal is to have the lease payment come out to around 500 a month with an absolute max of 600 a month. I would have 5000 to put down and I need 15k miles a year. Is the 500-600 a month possible. All my prior car shopping have been purchases so leasing is nwe and a little confusing to me.

The question: What cars & when used the E-Body? Don't start typing yet.... I believe a huge degree of confusion comes from those who confuse body designations with chassis designations, which are usually the same folk who want to call all BOF chassis' "platforms" as if they were unibodies. Chassis's, or frames, were NOT designated by the same body letter codes. The B-Body Buick rode a completely different chassis/frame than a B-Body Pontiac in 1960, for example. And FRAMES ARE NOT 'PLATFORMS' !!! "Buick introduces the prestige, E-body based, Riviera, as a 1963 model." --( http://www.gm.com/company/corp_info/history/gmhis1960.html ) "There was styling, of course: …

Millions of drivers around the country use E-ZPass and other electronic toll collection systems to speed them on their daily drives, but consumers are discovering that there is a price to be paid for the convenience: loss of privacy, haggling between state systems, accidental fines. Now, add to that list the “orphan exit.” You probably know you should read your bills carefully every month looking for signs of fraud or overcharging by retailers. But if you're like most people, you probably don't do it anyway. Fortunately, Pennsylvania driver Kathy Suntato is that special consumer who keeps her magnifying glass nearby when scanning her bills. Once each week, Suntato gets …

Today I went to an auto auction in Salem (the one where the Intrepid came from) for fun...just to see what they had. On my way back I decided to take the highway home. I get off onto the exit ramp, which has a lot of cars on it...it is rush hour. I patiently wait for teh cars to go...they have to wait to go because it merges into a rotary. My turn comes up. I move forward no more than a couple of feet to see if there are any cars coming through the rotary. There are, so I stop and wait for them to go past. As I'm watching I see a big truck barreling towards me in my rear view mirror. I only had enough time to think, 'he's going too fast to stop." This happened at about 5…

And, in a way, I'm glad I didn't go. Back in 1987, when my then best friend died, I was all about the memorial service. I felt the need to BE there ... and, I was. We all know that the US market is VERY overcrowded with brands, so leaving the big ones out of it (Toyota and Honda aren't going anywhere) what brands need to disappear? Think of the ones that simply drain away sales from more viable brands and don't have much going for themselves. Who needs to go? And, what would be a "good mix" afterward?

I am planning to move into Management Consulting. My current firm is a Civil Consulting firm, so the rigors of Consulting are not unfamiliar to me. I need to push a bunch of things forward and freeing up money will be required. It is really going to kill me to let the GTO go as I completely love the car, but it will put a little cash in my pocket and reduce my monthly costs a bit as well as insurance. I would like to put my plan of setting up to paint my own project cars into motion sooner rather than later which entails lots of little and not so little purchases. I'm less patient than I used to be and really want to get …

I wrote this two days ago about dealing with the $h! I feel after going through a bad breakup....I've been writing for along time and thought you guys might want to read this, given Camino's lyric thread. Hope you guys like and please let me know what you think. Take My days so empty, yet I can never find Time to ease the pain plaguing my mind Endless thoughts of sadness Drifting further away from the world into madness Loneliness my only companion I’m falling, falling into the abyss The taste of your lips, I’ll always miss Consumed with hate, my misguided fate A lost soul, this gapping hole Ripped my heart from my chest Placed…

I just read an article where the PETA freaks and even Senator John Dufus Kerry want the NFL to suspend Michale VIck now. I mean, sure he probably was involved, and its horrific. But, should we at least f*cking wait until the courts determine if he is indeed guilty for sure, first? I'd like to see what kind of illegal $h! these hypocritical folks have in their closets that they want vick gone before its really proven exactly what he did. JOEY HARRINGTON!

RALEIGH , N.C. - Tammy Faye Messner, who as Tammy Faye Bakker helped her husband, Jim, build a multimillion-dollar evangelism empire and then watched it collapse in disgrace, has died. She was 65. Messner had battled colon cancer since 1996 that more recently spread to her lungs. She died peacefully Friday at her home near Kansas City, Mo., said Joe Spotts, her manager and booking agent. A family service was held Saturday in a private cemetery, where her ashes were interred, he said. Article continues: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19891663/

Short history: I am German, born and raised and recently moved here to the US. I want to buy a new vehicle. And that's where my problem starts. My parents always bought Opels, Kadetts more specifically until my uncle started working at a Ford dealership. We have had a Mondeo, Scorpio, two escorts and about 3 Foci (of which the last one was a 250orsomething HP 6speed Monster that I could EASILY and comfortably to 150 MPH. My mom also bought an Alpha Romeo (awesome cars, but not available in the US ) Well, here in the US, when our 96 Dodge Intrepid went out, we bought a Chevy Venture minivan that me and my wife shared and which we totally love. Now my job is taki…

This may or may not get printed over on that site, so I pasted it here to at least discuss. While I have stated for a long time what Dr. Bud [E. Bryan's Roadkill column] is saying about NASCAR going back to production-based cars, just wanted to tweak the suggestions a little, give it some direction. NASCAR is about bread-and-butter cars. Pony cars aren't bread and butter, leave those to IROC and Trans Am. While standards like the Charger and Impala would be good for this new-look NASCAR, racing is supposed to improve the breed, and the breed that needs improvement is the boring "Camcord"-dominated world of mid-size cars. So here's what should be done. -Go with ho…

Okay, who else here was up at 12:01 AM, waiting outside (or inside) for the latest edition of the Harry Potter series??? I will admit that I was just as interested in it as my 13 y-o stepson is. I was just fine waiting until Saturday morning to go and pick up a copy from the local Target, but the main town next to me (Mount Holly) had a "Harry Potter" party in their historical village shops and I figured my money would be better spent keeping a small mom & pop bookstore alive, rather than lining another Big Box's coiffers. Anyone else here get one at midnight, or planning to get one soon?

My dad decided to buy another motorcycle. A classic 1975 Honda XL175 with an extremely low 340 miles. It runs pretty well for having sit in someone's basement for decades. It's rusty in spots, but overall it's in decent condition. All original and as I mentioned, has only 340 miles. Has a small fuel leak and the clutch sticks sometimes, but that's basically all that's wrong with it. He heard about it from a coworker who didn't want it anymore.. He couldn't resist it. This, after he told me he couldn't afford to help out with the distributor I need. I have no idea what he paid for it, exactly, but I'm quite positive that it was more than $400.

The other day, my friend's 1996 Buick LeSabre died on him and he's already spent in excess of $2500 in the last two months rebuilding the engine and doing the head gasket... turns out there was something was screwy with the rebuild on the engine and the cylinder chambers need to be re machined... the fuel gauge and odometer have stopped working properly, and it's eating coolant into either the engine or tranny. For a car with 170'000K, he doesn't want to keep pumping money into it... meaning he's in the market for a new vehicle. He says he doesn't want another American Car, and is looking at some Toyotas, Hondas, the Volvo 850/S70 and the Jetta. I've tried to talk hi…

I am right now in Mount Clemens, MI helping my fiance get situated in her new condo. Today while driving around we noticed a maroon colored 65 Mustang with double barrel 289 V-8 and looked in a decently good condition. The vehicle did not have any noticable physical damage and the interior with beige leather which the owner said is reworked looked pretty decent. The owner is asking about $6500. My fiance always liked owning old cars and she feels like wanting it. Since I am poor in judging old cars other than Corvettes, it will be greatful for all of you guys put your two cents or dollar or $6500 in it.

I don't even know if anyone on here will remember me, but I used to be a frequent guest. I still check in on the topics from time to time, but find myself not having the time to respond to anything! LOL When I started contributing to Cheers and Gears, I was in car sales for GM, later went on to be a Subprime Lender, then Lease Manager, and now Business Manager, at a Chev Pontiac Buick GMC Store. I still learn a ton from reading the posts on this site. Anyway, just wanted to say hi....

My dad is considering getting a third a car for all of us to run. With the Sunfire still having problems, my Millenia being impossible to diagnose, and my brother needing a car to pratice driving with... It would really be nice. He found a goldish 1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL coupe with 73k that he may get. Signed papers for it, but can back out if needed. Not sure of the price as he didn't really specify. Should atleast be better than the Sunfire, but then, what wouldn't be?

Flybrian's Random Car Showcase Presents... The 1998-99 Cadillac Fleetwood Limited Through boredom and...well, just boredom, I bring you the second in likely many little 'diaries' of a completely random car. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1998 Cadillac Fleetwood Limited Lima, Ohio is not home to many things. Some oil was drilled there. Hugh Downs of 20/20 fame worked there. Ford's 3.5l Duratec is made there as was Phyllis Diller. But it is home to one of America's - if not the world's - most experienced and respected coachworks: Superior Coaches. Got your attention? Gather around the campfire kids I've got a tale for you. This is a perfect truth is stranger than fiction scenario. Unfortunately it has a very tragic & sad ending... First off some of you may remember "Mr.Death". About a year ago I owned, for a short time a rotted, tired & neglected 1970 Cadillac Coupe deVille seafoam green with a tan interior & black top. There's a long story about why that car was called "Mr.Death", but this is not the time or the place for that. <----- "Mr.Death" Well recently I've been talking quite a bit about another Cadillac beater... I've had a two Fleetwood Broughams & several other Cadi…

Unbeknown to me until about half an hour ago, my dad apparently now owns a 1999 Buick LeSabre with 90,000 miles, red exterior and gray leather interior, pretty loaded. It was my mom telling me this so I have no idea what trim it is...she's supposed to be sending pictures soon. My dad had been driving a '92 Olds Eighty-Eight for about 10 years and apparently it has finally kicked the bucket at 180,000 miles. He's been having more problems with it over the last year, so it was probably time to go, sadly. It's too bad because we just repainted it a few years ago and the condition of the car's exterior is still in really good shape with no rust or dings. I wish he would'…

It's sad to say but I will be parting ways with my xB within the next month or two. My family has decided to do some car rearranging in order to cut down on expenses and stop me from killing my sister. We have been sharing the xB for about the past year but she just started paying her portion last month. She doesn't care for it...allows people to smoke in it, trashes it, etc. I can't stand it. After my dad's Altima lease ends early next month he will get my mom's 4Runner, my sister will get a cheap car (under $3,000) and me and my mom will share a car. After doing some research this week we narrowed the field down to: 2008 Saturn Vue Mitsu Outlander Nissan Mu…

I haven't been reading the posts here for the last few days because I have been car shopping. There are considerations in this purchase that are not necessarily automotive. So if you are in a hurry I will skip to the end and tell you that I got a 2007 HHR. If you had asked me last week if I were likely to get a new car, I would have responded no. My wife correctly pointed out that we are too old to need a new car. It is quite depressing to think that one might never get another car. It is even more depressing to think that the reason is you might not be alive to enjoy it. Some time last week she changed her mind. She is quite unhappy with her Pontiac. She though…

If you have a decision (major or minor doesn't matter) that you need to make and you've done all of the "pros and cons" lists, etc. ... and still neither side jumps out as the "better" decision ... how do decide? What do you DO to decide? Yeah, I know "give it time" is one answer ... but, what if you feel that you don't have much time to decide? Notice I indicated "better" decision ... as opposed to the "right" decision. Many times a "right" decision doesn't really exist. Even "better" doesn't cut it, because what is "better" for you in your eyes may not be what really IS "better" for you...if that makes any sense. *sighs* Yes, I'm being cryptic and not making much…

I'm in DC all this week. I arrived on Sunday. In the two and a half days I've been here I've seen 6 new Toyota Avalon taxi cabs in black or beige just in the small 10 block radius I'm staying. They haven't been beat to hell and back...... yet......but I wonder how they'll hold up over time. Interestingly, DC must not have the age or mileage laws for Taxi cabs as NYC because I have seen a number of B-body wagons from all 3 divisions that made them still chugging about. On my way back from lunch, I was passed by a Custom Bruiser in surprisingly good condition for any 14 year old car, much less a cab.

Flybrian's Random Car Showcase Presents... The 1956 Buick Centurion Through boredom and...well, just boredom, I bring you the second in likely many little 'diaries' of a completely random car. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1956 Buick Centurion Of all General Motors divisions, Buick was arguably the most prolific builder of concept cars. Perhaps it was the motiff of classic American style and attainability that destined the middle-luxury marque to be the showcase for some of the most beautiful automobiles never to be produced. So I went on record a few months ago as saying I probably will not buy too many post 1979 Vehicles in the future. Now this obviously excludes stuff like a 5th gen. Camaro, so long as it is a true hardtop. But every once in a while I'm tempted. Right now my will is bending. Here at the Cadillac/Chevrolet dealer I work at we have a few nice modern rides, a 2004 Cadillac CTS (3.6) & 2002 Escalade EXT have both tempted me to fill out a credit app. But the car that really holds my interest, a white 2001 BMW 325Ci. It's not a 6-speed but then again Julie would need to be able to drive it and she's a bit manual-shy. The car is in great shape, has…
