I think the detail on this thing is amazing! Shannon Goff was born in Detroit, a trigger for her lifelong interest in the evolution of transportation. Captivated by her grandfather’s 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V, she had considered making the car many times, but shied away due its massive size. “Miles to Empty” brings this longtime dream to reality, a sculpture that is her most ambitious project to date. The work pays homage to her grandfather and hometown while dually reexamining themes inherent to the Motor City like the American obsessions of luxury and convenience. So came across this since the thread on forgotten autos and I posted one site that covered top auto's. This one is about auto's that consumers avoid and it shows in their sales. Pretty interesting These top 9: http://www.cheatsheet.com/automobiles/9-automobiles-consumers-avoid-like-the-plague.html/ Acura ZDX Mitubishi i MiEV Volvo C30 Hyundia Veracruz Nissan Cube VW Eos Land Rover LR2 Lincoln MKT Subaru Tribeca

So I found tonight this write up on what some writers think are embarrassing Black Sheep of Automotive Companies. http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/autos-midsize/black-sheep-embarrassing-offspring-from-otherwise-upstanding-automotive-families/ss-BBmgcb1?ocid=UP94DHP Check out the reasons these auto's are listed as black sheep and sound off on what you think about these choices? Short list of auto's is as follows: Jaguar X Type BMW 318TI Ford Mustang II 1990 Lotus Elan Ferrari 400I Cadillac Cimarron Porsche 914 Triumph Stag Subaru 360 Dodge Shelby Lancer Maserati BiTurbo Aston Martin Cygnet

Will admit that I did not know the Continental was an actual division of Ford, I always thought it was part of Lincoln.

Most car people have pretty strong allegiances. The theme of this thread is... which one vehicle from "the enemy" would you choose to own? It could be something you really like, that stands out in an otherwise crappy lineup, or just the lesser of evils, something you would tolerate while gritting your teeth.

Yokohama working on tires designed to move the air Tire design is typically focused on how the rubber interacts with the road, but what about the atmosphere? Yokohama has been developing a new concept tire that can improve both a car’s efficiency and handling by redirecting the air around it. The design involves small fin-like protuberances built into the outside of the tire near its shoulder, where the sidewall meets the tread. (Yokohama) Mounted at alternating angles, when they reach the top of the tire’s rotation they help to reduce aerodynamic drag, which improves high speed fuel economy and, potentially, the top speed of the vehicle. At the bottom,…

Minicars have stepped up their game in recent years. If you were looking at this class for your next new vehicle, which one would you choose? Fiat 500? Scion iQ? (done after the '15 model year) Chevy Spark? Ford Fiesta? Honda Fit? Smart FourTwo? Any others you can think of in this class? I think I would have to go with the 2016 Chevy Spark 2LT, with manual transmission, in Titanium or Kalamata. The new Spark has grown up big time, with a more mature look inside and out, and some unexpected features for this class. I expect some will say "buy something bigger that is a few years old", or "I'd rather walk than drive any minicar", but just for the sak…

OK, so how much per Kilowatt hr? Washington state which is 100% Hyrdo powered and they just built a couple of huge wind farms on the Columbia river so do not know how that factors in, but we have always had almost the cheapest electric cost in the nation. One reason the aluminum plants all came here. Our Home rate is 6.94 cents per Kilowatt hr. Only 2 other states are cheaper than us at 6.90 and 6.92. http://www.eia.gov/electricity/state/ Course on this Gov web site they show us as the cheapest in the nation. http://www.neo.ne.gov/statshtml/204.htm So what is your rate?

If tasked to choose a single car from the year you were born, what would you choose? For me, 1988 is an interesting year. With its arrival, the U.S. saw the first George Bush become president, while George Micheal ended the year with the best selling album and number one single. The Young and the Restless began its streak as the number 1 daytime drama in television as Rain Man finished the year as the highest grossing film. It is also the year in which Enzo Ferrari passed away, singers Adele and Rihanna were born, and Sega introduced its Mega-Drive (later called the Genesis in the U.S.). Going back to the automotive industry, Volkswagen closed its Westmoreland pla…

So that we're not flooded with a bunch of supercars that even William and I haven't been able to drive, lets try to keep it to makes/models that are accessible to most of the population: What car have you always wanted to drive, even as just an extended test drive, but have never had the chance? I mentioned one in the "Cars from your soul year?" thread, the Mazda RX7 I've also never been behind the wheel of an old Air-Cooled Beetle.... and while not fast, I still think it would be neat. I also would want to "return to my roots" and drive one of the old Old 350 Diesel power GM cars on a long drive.... just to experience it.

In companion with the 'Birth Year' thread, it might be interesting to see where your 'soul' points, automotively. In my observations, it seems most car people have a fondness for cars they grew up with, or vehicles that were common when they were in their teens. Never took a scientific poll or anything, but I never fell into that category; I've always been drawn to the '57-64 American era primarily, whereas I 'grew up' around late '70s, mid 80s junk (I'm a '66 model year). My topic, my rule; if you post multiples, they have to stay within an 8-yr span of time. In my top 5 of all time :

With the switch to much smaller turbocharged engines, how many here are displacement snobs? I admit, I am a bit of one. I rather drive a DI 3.6L V6 than a turbo 4, even if the 4 had slightly better fuel economy and equal power.

Since it was pointed out that I might have a strong bias towards GM products, it made me think about what my first choice for each of the respective vehicle segments would be and how many of those segments GM might win. B-Segment (subcompacts, super mini, city car) - None of the above really since the VW Up! isn't here, I haven't driven the new Spark yet, I didn't like the current Spark. Sonic if that counts in this segment and I'm forced to pick. C-Segment (compacts) - Mazda 3 C-Segment (Luxury Compact) - C-Class D-Segment (mid-size) - Chrysler 200c (I know it's not the journalists favorite, but I like the powertrain and interior) D-Segment (Luxury Mid-size) -…

Ha! I bet I got a lot more to look with the title rather than "Van Comparison test". Well, it is an unconventional test but there isn't much to read on these work horses that help suport our economy(s) more than we give them credit for. Ususally these just get one little instrumented test with one engine, usually the most powerful. Well, they brought us the diesel options for all three of the major players. They excluded the Nissan only because they don't have a diesel option. Hellllllllo ladies and gents(actually not sure if I have run into any ladies here..lol) Well I've done this one other time somewhere else and I thought it was a fun idea because everybody seems to like to tout their favorite truck as "the best" but that isn't true at all. My friends have a 2011/2012 Acadia without a Nav screen (they have what I think is called the black tie radio or something like that). They want to unpair a cell phone because apparently they have filled up the number of phones you can have paired. Is there a command they can speak to do this or something they can access via the radio's menu? They lost the owner's manual and online I seem to only find the newer ones with intellilink.

Also, I assume you do not want entire articles copied and pasted so I'll start it and then post a link to the rest of it. To the article. "Ah, the off-road pickup. The niche's profile has really been elevated over the past half-decade even if sub-brands such as Pro-4X, FX4, and Z71 have propped the field up longer. So the wife and I began to do some car shopping, basically test driving the cars she's interested it to see what she thinks. Here's the list of cars she's test driven in the past two weeks: 1. Buick LaCrosse FWD Leather (her favorite so far) 2. Buick Regal FWD (she's not a fan, I like it! The 2.0L turbo 4 cyl is a rocket engine in this car) 3. Buick Verano Leather (too small for both of us, nice car, just not her cup of tea) 4. Buick Encore FWD Leather (surprisingly, she's no longer interested in the Encore, likes the exterior look but not the interior styling) 5. Chevy Impala 2LT (her second favorite, was quite impressed with the amount of features for the price) …

Before I head to some cesspool like Yahoo Answers, I figured I'd try my question here. I'm working on a wheel safety booklet for a heavy equipment company. If a worker fails to deflate a tire before maintenance, it can explode and send them flying a considerable distance - in some cases, hundreds of feet. I have a chart of commonly used tire sizes, each with a 'energy ft/lbs' figure. For example, a 40 x 57 tire has 807,218 ft/lbs of energy when cold. What I'd like to know, is if anyone here knows if I can parallel these numbers with something a lay-person can understand. For example, if I can state something along the lines of a certain tire possessing the …

About exactly like the title says. What new vehicles are you anxiously awaiting a read about?? I know I'm really excited to read about a few vehicle.. On the obvious side, GT350/R. Then on the less obvious side is the new Tacoma. Nissan Titan XD and Continental. The new Titan with a Cummins 5.0..That thing has potential to really shake up the half ton segment. By no means do I think it'll dethrone the D3 but I think it will make great competition and hopefully one of the D3 will make something competitive to it. I believe it is rated 350hp and 550tq. Not too long ago that was the big diesel numbers. Now it's a "mid sized" diesel. The Continental makes me r…

No joke. Hawking (and many, many others) have gone public in their concern about combining AI drones and weapons: "In an open letter posted online Monday, Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk and hundreds of other scientists warn humanity about such a dystopian military future. Like something from a Hollywood blockbuster, the scientists caution that only a ban on autonomous weapons now can stop an arms race that could see killer robots wipe out humans tomorrow. 'If any major military power pushes ahead with AI weapon development, a global arms race is virtually inevitable,' the letter says, 'and the endpoint of this technological trajectory is obvious: autonomous weapons will be…

I hi-jacked my teens X Box One who is gone for three weeks, because I want to play Forza til my eyeballs bleed. But, I am frustrated. I purchased the Fast & Furious pack to drive a couple sweet old mopars, but I honestly don't know where or how to find them. They are not on in My Car list. The only care I can find there is my default. This is the strangest game. I just drive all around trying to score lame points. I just want race and don't know how. I must have rented the wrong game. Sucks so far, but looks great on my new 4K big screen. Any tips out there. Any good sites anyone can suggest. I don't mind cheats either, thankie

I like Formula, but a friend of mine was saying how it has gotten boring, it isn't as good as the old days, there is no passing Mercedes always wins, etc. Which got me thinking how great would a racing league be where all cars had to have a 3800 V6? This way there is strategy in car selection and it would reward skilled driving. Some basic rules: 240 hp max (the GNX and Twin Turbo Trans Am would not be allowed) Stock wheels, but you could put on any tires you want Can remove excess weight like spare tire and jack, can't change the body or remove seats No engine modifications, but allowed to put new oil, filters, spark, plugs, etc to keep it maintained Races…

Sir Christopher Lee, whose death at the age of 93 was announced on June 11, was an actor who used the modern art of cinema to evoke ancient feelings. Standing at six foot five and with a voice like chilled silver, Lee was a druid capable of inspiring deep terror, a conjuror whose skills belonged just as much to the bards of some long forgotten land as they did to the studios of Hammer. Sir Christopher Lee, a man of grand performances and operatic portrayals, brought something unique and ancient to our screens.

Pre-Tuned or Stock. This week we’re asking the question: Which do you prefer? A pre-tuned ride or a stock vehicle that you can tune and modify yourself? My money is on the latter but I’ve been surprised before. Take the #SoundOff survey now! Want to see last week's results? See the post here.

Boldride had their story published on Yahoo Auto's today. They asked who built the best concept cars and in researching for this story they found even 6 yrs after the production lines stopped, Nobody built better concepts than Pontiac and they were from the 80's! Nobody better than Pontiac Concepts? 1986 Pontiac Trans Sport 1987 Pontiac Pursuit 1988 Pontiac Banshee 1989 Pontiac Stinger Concepts did not stop in the 80's either. Just a taste of what you can find at Boldride web site 1990 Pontiac Sunfire 1992 Pontiac Salsa 2007 Pontiac Solstice So what do you think? Is Pontiac the best out there for building Concepts? If …

Hey ladies and gents, So the gf and I finally got Netflix last night(signed up for it) and we had intended to use her ps3 because we are always at her house when we watch tv/movies. Well, i have a 3rd gen ps3, I think - first gen when they changed the "body". And I know I can watch Netflix from my PS3. Well hers doesn't have the "tv/movie services" tab like mine does. Sorry, forgot to say, she has a first gen PS3(plays ps2 games). The question really is.. can Netflix be watched from her first gen PS3? If so, how? Thank You!

It's almost that time of year again! Whose getting excited for it? I know I am. Who do we think is gonna take the overall win? I think Porsche have a pretty good chance at taking a win. Toyota they just don't seem to be able to match the pace, and it's anyones guess as to how the Nissan entry is going to go. No prizes for guessing who the favorites are to win though.

There comes a time when every paint job has reached the end of its natural life. Assuming you care about these kinds of things, what do you do? Wrap it or paint it? When it comes down to it your costs will be about even so it’s really a question of preference. If you’re looking a truly unique pattern or finish (like the sticker bomb wrap above) then wrapping s the way to go but nothing beats paint for durability. So, lay or spray? Weigh in here and we’ll let you know the results next week.

I googled around a good 15 minutes, can't find what I am looking for. In vintage Road & Track road tests they used to feature scale 'see-thru' line drawings on the car's spec page. These showed the outline of the car, the power train & the driver seat/steering column. Here's a tiny example : My library of original mags is primarily Car Life & Motor Trend, so I don't know when this practice of providing these scale drawing started. ANYWAYS…… I am looking for that same sort of scaled line drawing for ANY 1950s car, say '50-57 (as the '58/59/60s start getting 'lower/longer' than I'm looking for). Mike Wood’s Duramax-powered ’04 Ford Mustang The thought of a big-cubic-inch diesel engine in a light car seems to excite just about everyone, but perhaps the most impressive swap of the decade has been Mike Wood’s Duramax-powered Mustang. When we featured the car in 2008, it was running low 10s in the quarter-mile and achieving more than 30 mpg at Hot Rod magazine’s Drag Week—and that was just the start. Later, a Gear Vendors Overdrive was added to the 4L80E transmission, the engine was hopped up a bit more and given larger doses of nitrous, and the entire combination was fine-tuned. Then Mike went racing. Although not as publicized as they perhaps should have been, …

I figured I would just start one thread and just post to it on the Fridays I remember. I see I only posted one previous #RacingFriday thread with Ken Gushi & Tyler McQuarrie so if the admins don't mind merging it would be cool. So, anyway, onto today's post. In the video below you can see a near miss at 140mph. The driver exhibits some real skill but, as far as I can tell, he's an amateur (he may want to reconsider that). The video hosted at the link is a trimmed version of the good parts but I also include the link to the full You Tube video where the driver gives his POV.

Pretty simple, I'll post a line from a song, whoever figures it out names the song and artist, then they post their own lyrics for someone else to figure out. You don't have to make it crazy easy, but maybe try not to make it something too obscure so people at least have a chance to figure it out. I think that about covers it, so, to get it started: There, are stars, in the southern sky, and if ever, you decide, you should go, there is a taste, of time sweetened honey, down.........

You can decide this based on if you were spending your own money, if they were free, however. The vehicles may all be in one class, or they may be totally different. I'll give a hint as to what is contained in the thread title. It sparks up discussion, it's fun to fantasize, and it takes some thought. So after some back story, here are your first choices- A piece over @ R&T made this a simple duo to start off with. Two vehicle that have battled it out for over 2 decades both …

This is a thread for gun enthusiasts, no matter how many or how little firearms you have, here's the place to talk about them. JUST TO BE CLEAR, this thread should contain NO political views or standpoints. It is only here to discuss the guns themselves. This thread over at MT was one of the very few that was able to remain civil throughout its rather lengthy existence. I have no doubt a more civilized group can do the same or better.

As I'm quite bored (there's nothing like pouring rain on a car lot to make things very slow and boring), I thought I'd pose a question. If you could resurrect one, and only one, now defunct car brand, which would you choose, why, and how would you do it? I've been thinking about this and it's a tough call. Part of me wants to say Pontiac, because I would love to see GM work harder on performance models, but my heart says Mercury. My first car was a 1982 Mercury Cougar station wagon, to me Cougar has always brought a feeling of excitement to mind (even in that wagon, at least a little bit, I'm not sure why, but that is how I thought of them as a kid and it never lef…

Alright, since my hand was tipped in the thread that was going the other direction I'll do this one now. What one brand do you think is truly expendable? What one brand of car would you get rid of, why, and would you do anything with the products it is currently making? I know GM is already shutting down the plants but so far planning to keep the name, but I say let Holden go. There are a couple of their vehicles which have already been rebadged under the Chevrolet umbrella, and I say go ahead and do that with the remaining models that don't have straight-up matches already in the Chevy line-up. Most importantly, this gives the opportunity to bring back the El Cam…

So, I don't plan on having the Toyota for too much longer. If it doesn't sell (seems like this will be the case), I'm just going to trade it in. My dilemma pertains to the recurring fact that I am beyond indecisive. I look at vehicle after vehicle, day after day, and I can never whittle down what exactly I want. My tastes are always changing based on the flavor of the day (usually something impractical). What I do know is this: I need a car. It should be cheaper to own (incl. gas, ins, etc.). It mustn't be a snore. I can't do another car like the Avalon; it kills me everyday. It must be a stick or at least a dual-clutch that isn't made by Ford/Fiat. It should have a f…

The above photo was snagged from Reddit where the owner installed the side stripes to cover some superficial damage which got me thinking: what would you do if you scratched your MX-5 (not necessarily the new 2016 but any gen)? If you’ve got the time it’d be cool to see what you’d do to cover up a slight scratch. Oh, and please answer even if you don’t have a Mazda, aMiata or even if you don’t have a car at all. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LR6M6HM

Maybe that should be Afternoon Delight, if anyone can remember that popular Starline Vocal band song? Lol. Cars from that time can get a bad wrap, but there were some worthwhile things from those days like GM's radial tuned suspension (RTS) and ESC ignition, and some interesting rides. What notable cars can you think of from those years? Mazda Rotary Pacer Pickup

I'm seriously considering a daily driver and one of the cars on my shortlist is the 2015 VW GTI, 4-door, with manual transmission and performance package. I'm yet to test drive it. What I like, on paper, is that the car is a perfect blend of utility (hatch), performance, fun-to-drive, fuel economy, and features. What I hesitate about is VW's reliability and dealer experience. Is this car now made in Mexico, unlike previous iterations that were made in Germany? What I dislike are the options packages. I do not have problems with with getting the S, but I hate the plaid seats. I dislike the panoramic sunroof for SE and Autobahn trims. Tell me more about it. Your thought…

So I refinanced my 6 recently, from 4% to 2.24%. and from 5 years to 5.5 years. I was paying a little more than required previously to round it off at $500/month. Right now I'm planning to pay $200/2weeks, but the required is ~$360/month. what would you do? pay it off faster.... pay the minimum and bank the savings... something else?
