medical site Provided by: Canadian Press Written by: Alexa Olesen, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BEIJING - U.S.-based toy giant Mattel Inc. issued an extraordinary apology to China on Friday over the recall of Chinese-made toys, taking the blame for design flaws and saying it had recalled more lead-tainted toys than justified. The gesture by Thomas Debrowski, Mattel's executive vice-president for worldwide operations, came in a meeting with Chinese product safety chief Li Changjiang, at which Li upbraided the company for maintaining weak safety controls. "Our reputation has been damaged lately by these recalls," Debrowski told Li in a meeting at Li's office at which reporte…

I bought my first Cadillac in 2002 for the huge sum of $200. It was a 1987 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance, white with a white vinyl top, blue leather interior, blue pinstripping and the spanish-gold emblem package. 132,000 miles. Then years later I bought my tripple-silver 1986 Fleetwood Brougham, this one had 172,000 on the odometer. Having owned several others over the past few years I got another 1986 Fleetwood Brougham yesterday. I took my paycheck and called a number I got off warped & torn FOR SALE sign and negotiated away. I had every intention of having this be Julie's car for a few weeks while we save up for a better domiscile but it looks like…

OK, so I go to one of the chain bookstores and am sitting in the cafe peacefully looking at travel books. This NERD, mid 40s or more, who has "the day planner" sits next to me and starts chatting me up. The approach is all too familiar. I cut him off coolly. Soon enough, this kid sits down with him (obviously pre-arranged) and starts doing the usual pitch, including the tag line "the only way to make money is to trade time for..." or something like that. (I have been approached at least 25 times at B&N, Borders, Starbucks or the gym with a multi-level come on and have heard this over the last 10 years or so). I got up to throw away my cup and told him off loud en…

I don't usually drink coffee, but I had lunch at a local sandwich shop this afternoon, and they had a little sign board on the table for their flavored iced coffee, so I tried it. It was good, but I was a jittery mess for about 45 minutes after 1.5 glasses of it. I honestly felt high. How is this a good thing?

Reading some of the stories about "missed connections" and driving around town lately, watching all of the "non descript" daily drivers carry people to and from places ... and trying to decide on a newer car (be it a newer one for winter and road trips or an older one for winter only), I've been wondering how many people I see in the "daily driver" type cars are actually car enthusiasts, with a "sunny day" only car (or cars) at home, etc. In other words, if you have "toys" (namely, vehicles that are driven only on sunny days, etc.), would people know that you are an enthusiast by what you drive daily/to work? Or, like me, is one of your "toys" your current daily driver?…

A conversation with a fellow Monte Carlo enthusiast prompted this query. Ruffling feathers is NOT the intent ... just kinda curious if others have noticed this, too.... We were talking about how some events are well attended ... and others aren't. It seems that the well-attended ones are those that offer some type of trophy/award/reward for participation; the ones not-so-much-attended are the gatherings/drives/spur-of-the-moment plans that are "just for fun", with no awards/plaques/etc. Yet, many times, we hear/read people note that the gatherings really ARE about the people, the friendships, etc. ... the awards are secondary. Sssooo, if this IS the case, why is it s…

Why is it that trains back in the 30s and 40s and I think even up through the 60s had a streamlined body that has now been reverted to a boxy, rectangular one? It just seems odd that the trains that influenced cars like the Lincoln Zephyr due to their sculpting and aerodynamics are now just rolling blocks that really don't have much in the way of design to them. Did this happen because trains lost their importance so train companies didn't want to waste the money "designing" them or hiring people to design them? The same thing has happened with buses. ISU has a few old GMC buses running around that have some curves and aerodynamics to them compared to the Gillig and O…

Since my shop I work at has opened its garages to the public for about 2 years now, every BMW I have seen seems to have either spun bearings or Catastrophic engine failure. Normally we tell them to go to the dealer then they tell us how much they will charge then we under cut it by almost $2k or more then I'm stuck with some European car expert In Bay 4 with a engine in 10 billion pieces over 5000 tags where sensors hook up and calling BMW for either parts numbers or .PDF schematics. You would think BMW would be good at making a engine by now. This is probably the 4th one this month. Is it common for BMW engines to Seize or self destruct? or are Metro Detroit area Be…

After my disillusionment with the dealership business it's actualy nice to 'work' for a living. I did a couple hours of orientation and then they threw me right out there. For the first time in my life I'm a member of a union, and I feel like I really could stay at this job for a long time. I better stay with it, I'm tired of bouncing around... The only bad experience of the day was I sliced open my knuckle on my right hand. (I'm right handed) And as luck would have it it was because of some jack-hole in' Sweeden who decided to ship a 3-foot piece of exhaust by just slapping a damn label on the catalitic converter. No cardboard packaging, no taped …

SEATTLE - Officially, it’s the South Lake Union Streetcar. But in the neighborhood where the new line runs, it’s called the South Lake Union Trolley — or, the S.L.U.T. At Kapow! Coffee, a shop in the old Cascade neighborhood, 100 T-shirts bearing the words “Ride the S.L.U.T.” sold out in days, and another 100 are on order. “We’re welcoming the S.L.U.T. into the neighborhood,” said Jerry Johnson, 29, a part-time barista. Some claim — incorrectly, according to representatives of Vulcan Inc., the company that is developing the area — that South Lake Union Trolley was the original name and that it was changed when officials belatedly realized the acronym. The $50.5 millio…

For my architecture independent project, I have been working on a site analysis model of downtown Des Moines. My project is a light rail transportation hub with retail and public space, and the site of the project is adjacent to the rail tracks running by downtown (in the image below, there are two surface parking lots next to two purple parking garages and a couple overpasses...those lots are where the hub will go). For those that have ever played SimCity, the color scheme should be pretty easy to recognize: Green = residential lofts / apartments / condos Blue = commercial office & retail Yellow = industrial / warehouses Orange = civic buildings, federal buildi…

MOSCOW, Idaho - A 22-year-old carnival worker blames two friends having sexual intercourse in the back seat of his SUV for an accident in which his Chevrolet S-10 Blazer struck a telephone pole. Joshua D. Frank, who is living in a trailer parked on the Latah County Fairgrounds, pleaded guilty Monday to a misdemeanor charge of failing to notify a police officer of a traffic accident. That's after he left the vehicle at the site of the mishap. He was fined $188. Frank told Moscow Police Department officers that he was driving the vehicle near downtown early Saturday while a man and woman were having sex in the rear of the vehicle. According to a probable cause affidavi…

DETROIT - Cars were too small, sport utility vehicles too inefficient and she couldn't see herself driving a minivan. So Dr. Melissa Sundermann ended up with a type of vehicle that most automakers are banking on for sales growth: a crossover. Built on car underpinnings but having many attributes of SUVs, crossover utility vehicles have seen explosive growth since Toyota Motor Corp. started the category with the RAV4 back in 1995. In 1996, the RAV4's first full year on sale, Toyota told 56,709 of the small crossovers when it had the market to itself, according to data collected by Ward's Automotive Group. But sales rose quickly as other automakers saw the growth potenti…

Just got back from a relocation research trip to Atlanta and Florida (no, not Miami). I lived in Atlanta for 2 years, slightly after college. As a product of LA, I was surprised to find that I loved it. It has a special place in my heart because, fairly soon after college, I was able to buy my first house there because of the huge price differences from Cali....that I drive by it every time I go to the ATL. Atlanta is NOT the South. Georgia and Atlanta almost don't belong in the same sentence. Atlanta is one of this country's great metropolitan areas and probably the "engine" for that quadrant of the country. I'm considering going back, so help me out. Pluses: - …

Weak dollar and decline in oil inventories spark buying of oil futures NEW YORK - Crude oil prices surged further into record terrain Thursday, breaching $83 a barrel as the weak dollar and last week's decline in U.S. oil inventories spurred buying of futures. Gasoline futures jumped as well. Oil prices have risen to records in seven straight sessions on the New York Mercantile Exchange on a mix of concerns about falling supplies and tight demand. But many analysts also blame an influx of speculative "nontraditional" capital into energy commodities. And that inflow increases when the dollar falls, analysts say. Addison Armstrong, an analyst with TFS Energy Futures LLC…

Anyways, I thought this was a strange question, but heck, I figured I'd throw on here... A friend of mine is coming back from Japan with his girlfriend, who is coming to live in the US.... He asked this, knowing I don't have a clue when it comes to fashion. Anyone have an idea on this one? Levis Maybe? Though I must say, she is a pretty girl...(and quite funny too)

My wife's company is headquartered in Denmark (it's a pharmacutical company). She was asked to attend a workshop there for several days next week (Sept 23-27). She asked what I'd like for her to bring me back, and I couldn't really think of anything until this morning. Depending on what brand of GM vehicles are sold there (i.e. Vauxhall, Opel), I'd like a brochure from them (I'm a cheap person to get gifts for at times). She'll have time to tour the city and will be taken around by someone she knows from Denmark that comes to the States often at her work, so they should know where to find these dealerships. Any help???

I saw a green and white Prius taxi today in traffic..I googled and found this article: From the Denver Business Journal: ---Metro Taxi doubled its fleet of hybrid vehicles on Denver streets Monday, bringing the total to 10. The addition of the five new Toyota Hybrid Prius is in keeping with a pledge Metro Taxi made in late May to replace all 500 vehicles in its fleet with hybrids. Metro Taxi said replacing one of its taxis with a Prius is equal to converting five non-commercial vehicles to hybrids. The company estimates converting its entire fleet will save 3 million gallons of gas a year.

I honestly thought I was going to break that button; it looked like it was made by a sweatshop in Japan and had cheaper quality than a Fisher Price toy. Also, I don't see the hype over Lexus vehicles because I was inside an ES, IS, LS, and GS and all of them were pretty damn cheap for a luxury vehicle. Some of them had loose gloveboxes and others had much more hard plastic than any current Cadillac I've been in, and the Americans get ragged on very hard for that stuff. I just don…

Is he gay or straight? At a glance, the key to telling might be in the way he walks. A swing of the hips or a swaggered shoulder is enough for many casual observers to identify a man’s sexual orientation, according to a study published in the September issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Observers were only able to accurately guess the sexual orientation of men; with women, their guesses didn’t exceed chance. But what’s most interesting to researchers is understanding how that snap judgment can unleash a series of stereotypes — even from the most liberal-minded. “This is important for the understanding of perception and feelings of assumptions…

BALTIMORE - Maryland’s highest court on Tuesday upheld a state law defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, ending a lawsuit filed by same-sex couples who claimed they were being denied equal protection under the law. Maryland’s 1973 ban on gay marriage does not discriminate on the basis of gender and does not deny any fundamental rights, the Court of Appeals ruled in a 4-3 decision. It also said the state has a legitimate interest in promoting opposite-sex marriage. Link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20839946/

WASHINGTON - Linguists alarmed at the increasing extinction of many indigenous languages identified five global "hot spots" on Tuesday where the problem is worst, led by northern Australia and a region of South America. The linguists are part of the Enduring Voices project that seeks to document and revitalize languages slipping toward oblivion, often spoken by indigenous peoples like Australia's aborigines whose cultures were trampled by settlers. David Harrison of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, the project's co-director, said there are 6,992 recognized distinct languages worldwide. He said on average one language vanishes every two weeks, often as its last elderl…

The latest addition to Jay Leno’s incredible collection of automobiles is one of BMW’s hydrogen-powered 7-series sedans. Mr. Leno is well-known for his love of cars and follows in the footsteps of Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Richard Gere and Sharon Stone by taking the keys to a Hydrogen 7. The green theme of the 7-series is echoed in Leno’s massive 20,000 square-foot garage, which is largely powered by steam. Another notable “green” car in Leno’s collection is his bio-diesel-fueled EcoJet from the 2006 SEMA show. The Hydrogen 7 is powered by a V-12 with 260 horsepower and runs on traditional gasoline or liquid hydrogen. Cruising range is approximately 125 m…

If you are car shopping or thinking you may be soon..... tell us what you are most likely going to look the most at. No doubt, there are so many models, you like a lot of them. Price, utility, style....so many variables. When it comes down to picking and choosing and meeting your needs, which cars etc. have the best chance of ending up in your driveway? The plants suspended operations as a result of bomb attacks Monday, Sept. 10, on energy pipelines in southern Mexico. Natural gas supplies should resume gradually between Sunday night, Sept. 16, and early Monday. Martha Avelar, a spokeswoman for Mexican energy monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, told Automotive News today. She told me there's been an accident at the corner of the streets my house is on...and one of teh cars is right next to the damn Cobalt. I quickly get dress and have a look....to my great relief, the Cobalt is undamaged, but the red Accord that got hit by some dumb bitch in an old Acura was less than a foot away from the front fascia. I immediately move the Cobalt into the driveway and out of harm's way. The last thing I need is the damn rental car to be involved in a wreck! So this dumb girl was coming up the hill and wasn't paying attention to the road that it e…

I have a love/hate relationship with the car sales business. Always have. Still recent events make me seriously doubt I want to stay at my job for longer than absolutely neccessary. As cool as it is to deal hands on with brand new Cadillacs & Chevrolets the car biz can be so unrewarding. 55-70 hrs a week & for WHAT? The money is not there like it used to be. Not sure but I might be moving on soon. Too bad really, when I started working at this dealer 2 months ago I had every intention of staying for at least one year, possibly two.

Quietly, and without fanfare, a trend started in the automotive industry – the elimination of spare tires. It is not a new trend – cars without standard spare tires have existed for some years now, but until now they were exotic sports cars, or high-end luxury cars. Unfortunately, that is about to change with this trend going mainstream. Up to this point the most extreme case of the lack-of-a-tire syndrome were the GM roadster twins – they did not even offer a spare as an option – the trunk on both cars is simply is not big enough. The GM twins, however just followed the trend in many luxury models that either came with run-flat tires or “tire inflation kit” (read: bottl…

As some of you may know, I busted my oil pan about a year ago on Tampa's infamously decrepit Kennedy Blvd. After calling a local shop who has always given me good service, I was quoted a price of $1200 to replace the oil pan because it was necessary to remove the engine and much of the transaxle to do it. First I thought they were ridiculously high, but after browsing the Aurora forums, I found that was a shockingly reasonable price given the day-and-a-half's worth of labor needed to do the job. People there have been quoted anywhere from $1000-4000 to do it. Some shops wouldn't even attempt it. I set a new record for oil pan repair today by calling the local Cadillac de…

Donna Harris Automotive News September 10, 2007 - 12:01 am EST General Motors says it is tossing the results of some recent customer satisfaction surveys because dealers tampered with the responses. That decision could cost offending dealerships big factory bonuses. GM surveys customers who buy new vehicles or submit factory warranty claims about their satisfaction with the dealership's performance. Dealerships that get high scores on those surveys and meet sales targets are eligible for quarterly cash incentives that can reach six figures. The satisfaction surveys are sent to customers' homes to discourage dealer influence. Customers respond by mail or onlin…

Baseball is in the last quarter of the season and it is shaping up to be a very close race to the post season with 18 teams being within seven games of their division lead. I'm a rabid Mets fan and am hoping to see my team make the playoffs for the second year in a row. Here are my pridictions for the end of the regular season AL Divsions- East - Boston Central - Detroit West - Angels Wild card - Seattle NL Divisions- East - Mets Central - Milwaukee West - Diamond Backs Wild Card - Phillies That's what I think the post season will look like but a lot can happen in these last 5 weeks of the season.

WASHINGTON - Chrysler LLC said Friday it would recall nearly 300,000 sport utility vehicles to address potential braking problems while driving uphill. In a separate move, Honda Motor Co. said it was recalling more than 180,000 Civics from the 2006-2007 model year to fix a wheel-bearing seal that could leak and lead to a wheel falling off the car. When naming crossovers, I think that these automakers need a BIT more imagination. For example: Mazda cX7 Mazda cX9 BMW X3 BMW X5 Acura MDX Acura RDX Saab 9-4X Saab 9-7X Cadillac BRX Nissan X-Terra (started it?) Cadillac SRX Lincoln MKX Chevy equinoX (bit of a stretch) Volvo XC90 Volvo XC70 Volvo XC60 Suzuki XL7 Suzuki SX4 Infiniti QX Lexus RX Lexus LX Lexus GX Cheers to Audi for thier Q-line instead of the X-humping, and Mercedes for not even having an acronym for thier SUVs. Not to mention the domestics for all staying out of the "X" game aside from the lux-marques. Especially Chrysler, which has no faux X's. Any…

I'm doing a relocation investigation trip right now to ATL and Florida. I made it a point to spend 3 days in the Panhandle on the Gulf. It's pointless to think about living there in terms of career and sophistication, because it offers not much else than a stunning seashore. Now, if I didn't have to work.... In the U.S., I'd live somewhere on the water on the Gulf of Mexico near Pensacola FL In Europe, I'd live in a small coastal village in Northern Portugal What about other C&G-ers, if work and school and other obligations weren't a concern?

Law school is looming on the horizon, which is going to require a move. I dont want to sell my house because of the incredible amount of equity I have in it (simple numbers appraisal value when I bought it-what I bought it for=FWD Acadia SLE; market value based on what a couple of houses down the block sold for-what I bought it for=2008 CTS) and the fact that they're doing a lot of improvements on my side of town, so I'm going to rent it out then rent someplace at school. Since I doubt I'll be able to get a job with the same income I have now, I'm going to have to move a bit on the cheap side, which would be easier without the Fusion and its full coverage insurance. So…

A few months ago, I was browing the IL Secretary of State website and discovered that IL has a specialty license plate that features/celebrates Route 66. Since then, I've been considering switching to these plates on all 5 of my Monte Carlos. But, I haven't yet switched because of the increase cost of the plates [though, on the plus side of that, a portion of the fee supports the Illinois Route 66 Heritage Project]. I'm also not happy that the letter/number combinations are limited (i.e. 2 letters, 2 numbers ... or ... 3 letters, 1 number), and I haven't been able to come up with some good combinations.... However, thus far, I've only seen a handful (if that) of cars …

... with a new project. I decided that I couldn't stand bumping into stuff, tripping over things and sqeezing past things in the lower part of the barn. So, my helper and I have been re-organizing the layout of the barn all week. All of the landscape/construction/woodworking and other non-car items are all moving upstairs to the space vacated by the Hawk, Maserati and GTO. I can't wait to get this done so that the entire downstairs will be dedicated to my car projects. I'm trying to get the layout right so that I can build a "retractable" paint booth, make room for a lift, install better lighting and outlets, build an enclosure for the compressor, and have my heater…

It was from this week's Fifth Gear, and you can download it from BitTorrent or see it on YouTube in a few days, but here's the text and picture online preview. Basically they crashed a '92 Volvo 940 wagon into an '04 Renault Modus supermini. The Volvo weighs 700+ more lbs and is 40" longer than the Renault... On TV Fifth Gear conducts a fascinating world's first crash-test and even the experts can't predict the outcome. Where are you safer - a big old car, or a small new one? We crash a 15 year old Volvo 940 estate, for many people the epitome of a solid and safe family car, into a 3 year old Renault Modus, notable as the first small car to earn a maximum 5 Star safety…

Once carried through the current And been swept away The king is in the closet He's hiding from today And though he owns all fortunes This is where he'll stay And his world is filled with darkness Turning grey Gazing out the window Of the 42nd floor He is separate from all others No one knocks upon his door And it might as well be raining Cuz the sunlight hurts his eyes And his ears will never hear the children's cries Once proud and full of passion He fought the cause of man Many people loved his courage Many followed his command He changed the old into the new And the cour…

This is one seriously awesome game. The graphics, the realism, the combat modes...and mostly, the scenario. In 1989, the Soviet Union mounts a full-scale invasion of the United States (Seattle, to be exact) and you're engaged in various campaigns to route the Russian advance. Its single and multiplayer and this is probably the first multiplayer game I'm going to take part in because its so neat. http://www.worldinconflict.com/ Downlod the demo and try it out or at least watch the trailers under DOWNLOADS. This is great.
