Brent Saba had just dropped a church group off at Philadelphia International Airport on Sunday morning and was heading north on Interstate 95 when it happened: His 15-passenger van ran out of gas. Saba, a 24-year-old church pastor, made it to the shoulder just past the Ben Franklin Bridge and waited more than 30 minutes for someone to stop and lend him a cell phone. Then he waited a while longer for AAA to arrive with fuel. With gas prices hovering at $4 a gallon, motorists like Saba are putting less fuel in their tanks — then coming up empty on the highway. Though national statistics on out-of-gas motorists don't exist, there's plenty of anecdotal evidence that dri…

I am looking at getting myself some cheap wheels for spring/summer. Maximum price of $3000 CAD I would really like an Achieva (1994 or 1995 is my preference). I found an ad on Saturday for a 1994 Achieva S sedan with 160,000 Kilometers for $2200. Called, and a lady told me she had bought a Corolla, and wants to get rid of the Olds pronto. I asked over the phone if its a V6 or 4, but she said she didnt know, she would have to look in the manual (haha women driver). I came to look at it on Sunday, and was mildly dissapointed. It is a rock bottom base model. It has the 2.3 OHV I4, 3 speed auto, 14inch wheelcovers, and crank windows. The best part was, it is …

I don't know if any of you have seen this before... But Penn and Teller have a show on Showtime called "Bull$h!" where they debunk popular social assertions, the supernatural etc.. well they devoted a half hour to environmental hysteria. There's a dusting of profanity, so put those headphones on! It's certainly a very entertaining show! WASHINGTON - From higher electric bills to more expensive gasoline, the possible economic cost of tackling global warming is driving the debate as climate change takes center stage in Congress. Legislation set for Senate debate Monday would require a reduction in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from power plants, refineries, factories and transportation. The goal is to cut heat-trapping pollution by two-thirds by midcentury. With gasoline at $4 per gallon and home heating and cooling costs soaring, it is getting harder to sell a bill that would transform the country's energy industries and — as critics will argue — cause energy prices to rise even more. Se…

This spring, America hit a historic point. With average gas prices per gallon edging toward $4, America's notoriously profligate ways started to change fast. Americans are driving less, using mass transit more, buying fewer gas guzzlers, indeed shopping less wantonly in general, and lowering their previously unshakable confidence as consumers. Suddenly, Americans are acting differently; if not exactly like Swedes, then not quite like themselves, either. It's a shift that could change the world. And there are more changes to come. So far the price shock has triggered the most obvious consumer shifts in the United States. Europeans, already greener, are also are buffered …

I wrecked my Sierra today in the rain. Not nearly as bad as last time, thankfully. I cannot believe it, I'm in shock still, I guess. After leaving the BPG dealership to get an oil change/tire rotation, I was traveling on a double-lane road, in the left lane there was a guy ahead of me going really slow, like he was on his cell phone. I went to pass him in the right lane, the truck suddenly fishtailed out of control, I fishtailed 3 or 4 times (raining heavily at the time) but I couldn't hold it, I tagged a stinkin' 90 Jetta in the passenger front door... driver's side front corner of my truck, same as before, then I spun completely around and crunched the curb with my…

It's true. It was just a phase. I have been cured of my gay disease. *nods* ....Okay, perhaps not. I'm quite the flaming homo, still. Anyways, I haven't been on the forums very much the past month. Life has taken many twists and turns, some good, some bad. I've been busy with work, friends, family, and the ever popular past time of car shopping. Speaking of the last two... My Mom, out of the blue, offered to help me with buying a car. She just got a new job in which her pay will be about $5 more per hour than her old one, not to mention she just finished paying off the Sunfire. Anyways, this greatly helped my search for a car. I'm very thankful she helped me. That…

I have seen a total of 3 GM ads since I've came back to the USA 9 days ago. The sad thing is, one was for the the Cadillac Escalade, the other was for the GMC Acadia, both these ads were on TV, the other add I saw was for the Pontiac G8, it was an internet ad. These are not the vehicles GM needs to be pushing in the days of 4 bucks a gallon gas, which is surely to go higher. They should be showing ads that show GM vehicles that get 30 mpg or more, once again GM shoots itself in the foot.

My local (literally right around the corner from where I live), small-time Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealer is closing per GM, at least that's what I was told today by the business manager. About a month ago, I noticed the inventory of older cars & trucks stored in the back of the dealership were missing. Then I noticed the used car inventory became smaller and smaller each passing week; the new vehicle inventory didn't seem to get any larger either (I noticed that the 4 G8 GT sedans they received apparently are their last new car deliveries; only one sold, the other 3 are still there with AMP stickers on them for $3k each ). Then on Saturday as I was passing the dealer…

Germany in call for ban on oil speculation Link: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtm...26/cnoil126.xml German leaders are to propose a worldwide ban on oil trading by speculators, blaming the latest spike in crude prices on manipulation by hedge funds. It is the most drastic proposal to date amid escalating calls from Europe, the US and Asia for controls on market forces, underscoring the profound shift in the political climate since the credit crunch began. India has already suspended futures trading of five commodities. Uwe Beckmeyer, transport chief for Germany's Social Democrats, said his party would call for joint measures by the G8 powers to prohibit …

Been thinking that perhaps a new sort of isolationism might be a good thing for us right now. Not the old " let's ignore the rest of the world and use protectionism in our dealings with other countries" way. Just a strictly non-interventionist, and locally focused sort of way. The idea of what else defines this idea is still floating around in my head and not fully formed yet. But I see some logical reasons for it. Thoughts?

This weekend, while we were working on the lawn, I had Tammy move the Vette away from the garage so I could take care of the grass around that area. Ok, Tammy doesn't drive a stick shift very often, and had never driven our 2000 Corvette, so I told her to take it out and get some practice while I finished up around the garage. That was a mistake. She came back with one of the biggest smiles on her face that I have ever seen. Then she promptly asked if she could take to work on Tuesday (today). Tammy considers some of the cars hers and some mine. I think of them all as ours. So, she will ask to drive one of 'my' cars before driving it. Well, she's at work and so i…

If you ask me why I come up with bone-headed ideas don't ask me why or where they come from... Last spring when I still had extra cash before another new Pontiac, new kitchen gadgets for the wife, and a son heading into college I looked into having our home professionally landscaped. Yeah well the two men father and son biz I had doing it had a slight problem the father fell off his roof and isn't doing so hot so now I am stuck landscaping. I have decent sized large front shrubs that need to go... The folks that were going to help landscape had a 2006 Silverado 2500HD with a Duramax and were going to "tow out the shrubs". Inflation: not good, and has a clear reason why it happens. Historically it's easiest seen in the worst times. Germany after WWI. Industry had been destroyed, therefor minimal wealth generation through manufacturing, mining, and farming. Paper money was printed to let government pay for it's expenditures because tax income was very minimal, ~1% of their budget at times. This caused their money to be devalued, like stock of a business that was losing money, with no hope of growth. the smartest german citizens bought gold and other currency before Hyper inflation happened. Wholesale Price Index: July 1914 1.0 Jan 1919 2.6 July 1919 3.4 Jan 1…

So yesterday we went to get the T&C out of the tow yard where it was being kept. Assuming it was drivable the plan was for me to drive it home with my girlfriend and mom following behind me. We get to yard, pay the bill and my girlfriend and I go to the van. It's way at the corner of the yard against a fence and about 6 inches away from some smashed up Elantra. I get in and start it up, then slowly back it out. I hear dragging and she points out the exhaust is on the ground...oh goodie. I move the van to an open space and notice that the force of the impact knocked it off of the hangers...no big deal. I get under the van and look around under it while I'm putting the …

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/world/env....html?id=525590 You may have heard earlier this month that global warming is now likely to take a break for a decade or more. There will be no more warming until 2015, perhaps later. Climate scientist Noel Keenlyside, leading a team from Germany's Leibniz Institute of Marine Science and the Max Planck Institute of Meteorology, for the first time entered verifiable data on ocean circulation cycles into one of the U. N.'s climate supercomputers, and the machine spit out a projection that there will be no more warming for the foreseeable future. Of course, Mr. Keenlyside-- long a defender of the man-made global warming theor…

Of course... The Beast wouldn't be the Beast if it weren't a pain in the ass. This past week, it suddenly became much, much, much louder. Somewhere near the catalytic converter, it's either rusted through or rusted off completely. I haven't had a chance to put it up on ramps to see for sure. Peaking under, I can't really see too much. Everything is still there, it seems, however. On a noise level, it's not as loud as it would be if you just cut off the exhaust, a la demolition derby car, but its loud enough that everthing that can rattle inside, does. As well, something that's been going on a bit longer, there's this rattling coming from the rolling gear, suspension…

http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/ In a veto proof margin, no doubt enhanced by election political pandering, the House passes bill to sue OPEC over oil prices. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday allowing the Justice Department to sue OPEC members for limiting oil supplies and working together to set crude prices, but the White House threatened to veto the measure. The bill would subject OPEC oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela, to the same antitrust laws that U.S. companies must follow. The measure passed in a 324-84 vote, a big enough margin to override a presidential veto. The legislation a…

Anderson Watch any talking head, and when the subject comes to energy, one can expect to hear the mantra, Americans are “addicted” to oil, and especially “foreign oil.” This is repeated as though the repetition is proof that the premise is true. Thus, American taxpayers are currently being forced to contribute billions of dollars – and will be dunned many billions more in the future – for a number of measures that supposedly will “secure” the United States’s energy use and supplies in the coming years. What’s more, the debate about whether or not these energy programs are…

It's decided. Gas just hit $3.77 down the street today. Were getting raped without a reach around & there's not a damn thing we can do about it! The end of an era. I had three, four and sometimes even FIVE V8-powered cars in my fleet at one point just in the past few years... now I'm down to only three cars, and while they're all V8s that's got to change as my wife is on dissability right now due to her very difficult pregnancy. She's not going to receive any pay since she wasn't with the company long enough. Missed it by ten days. So as much as it kills me, I've got to let either the B-59 or Banana go, and that's like deciding between …

A friend of ours organized a car show for a local high school. Apparently, someone had a video camera and put a couple of video compilations on YouTube. It was probably someone from the Mustang club. The show was small, but it was a success financially and actually had a good turn out given the size of the school and the fact that it was an inaugural event. The only bad thing was that we all got sun poisoning. The '68 can be seen at 3:06 of part 1 and the '73 can be seen at 3:31 of part 1. Not a bad showing for their first time out of the garage in a couple of years. Around 1:16 of part 1 is our friends (The one who organized the show) very sweet '79 Trans Am. Part…

Today is my Regal's 16th birthday. This morning, it had 244,073 miles on the odometer (that's almost 400,000 kilometers!) In this period, other than stuff that normally wears out (belts, hoses, brakes, batteries), I've only fixed the following, in this order: - exhaust donut connecting manifold to tailpipe - water pump - alternator - thermostat by-pass - 2 front wheel bearing assemblies (different times) - tie rod ends - 2 sensors: O2 and knock (different times) That's it. I'll have to wax it soon. The 100 degree temps have arrived. I still like it but am not that attached to it. But it has been reliable (so folks, don't knock the W-body too hard).…

Whoa, I can't believe the spring Ocean City Cruise is upon us already. Time for this dog to rise from his bed, shake and join the summer mindset. So tomorrow I'm pointing the Sierra south and checking out the thousands of hot vehicles of every description for the weekend. I'll post some pictures when I get back, like I did last year. EYE CANDY!

It's a silver '87 with T-tops and a split bench seat, 46k original miles, very clean though not perfect, still titled in original owner's name. The seller wants $8,500 ( a bit high IMO) but he seems eager to sell it and willing to negotiate. The car is quite nice.

I'm going on a two week vacation starting Friday. I'm going by myself at first, to London then Copenhagen. Meeting a friend in a small town in Sweden for a couple days. Then meeting a different friend for a tour of Berlin, Prague, and Vienna. I'll post some pictures when I get back. ps. The Euro doesn't make things convenient yet. Only Germany and Austria are actually on the Euro of the countries I'm going to. I also had to buy British Pounds, Danish Krona, Swedish Kroners, and Czech Koruny.

Interesting.... I had no idea Toronto was denser than NYC (or any American city, apparently). No wonder we have so many traffic jams. How are cities like Houston and Phoenix for traffic jams?

Some pie-in-the-sky concept for a "Eye-In-The-Sky" lookout tower for Oakland, CA. This is the work of a real architect, not just some kid messing around with markers and Photoshop. I can picture the property values of the surrounding neighborhood sinking and the urban blight setting in if this gets built.

http://maine.craigslist.org/car/679606893.html This ad is for a car he "found in the woods," meaning it doesn't belong to him. He also does not even say that these woods are on property that he may own. And he wants to charge you to look at it. Then what? If you decide you like it he'll sell you the car he doesn't own and therefore has zero legal right to sell? (all this aside from the fact that the car looks like it was hit by a locomotive and then sat in the ocean for 40 years) And people from Maine wonder why the rest of the country thinks they're all mentally retarded inbreds and make fun of them!

I've always been interested in photography, but lately its become an obsession. I find myself logging into Flickr at least once a day and searching completely random things just to see what's out there. I've always been a 'boredom surfer' in that, I'll get board and go to a search engine and search randon things. Is anyone else obsessed with Flickr? I think I might do the 365 pictures thing soon, where you take one picture each day and submit it.

I saw this classified ad and thought of you. Figured I'd show you. For $600 and supposedly only needing a battery and a brake line, not to mention having 50k original miles, seems like a good deal. Clicky You're next step is to clean out your inbox, because it's full.

Hey everyone! Got a new car, a 2008 Volkswagen Golf (Rabbit VWoA) and a "new" girlfriend Heather! (of like, five months so far). Plus, I'm computer illiterate if one will, and I am trying to figure out how to put one of my pics on my computer onto the signature area of posts, but I'm sure one of my friends can help me with that. Once I'm taught, I can do something well.

Energy Plan Political Pandering Whenever Congress puts together a bill attempting to find a solution to some sort of real or imagined problem, my immediate thought is that the bill do one of four things: It will worsen the problem at hand It will do nothing to solve the problem but instead create a new problem somewhere else It will worsen the original problem and create new problems In the very best case it will do nothing at all Consider the ethanol plan. Growing corn to produce ethanol was supposed to help make us energy independent. What happened was that subsidies to grow corn (an energy wasteful process without the subsidies), did not cause gasoline pri…

Right now? In class. Well, I've been around a bit, just under the radar I guess. Remember that thread I posted a month or two ago about my grandfather being in the hospital? Well he passed away a half hour into April 28th. Prior to that time, I had been driving about an hour to the hospital and back about two or three times a week to both see him and support the family who took the loss pretty hard. Then I missed an entire week of school last week (sans Tuesday) to be with the family and go to my grandpa's viewings and funeral. Now I'm finally back at school and catching up on the stuff I've missed. Speaking of school, I'm at the end of the fifth week of this semester…

As I drive around, of course I'm always observing vehicles around me, it's some sort of obsession I have. So I got thinking of things about current design details that so many manufacturers share. I was wondering, who was the first? A. Plastic covered bumpers B. 'Round' tailights, meaning this overdone trend of round within a larger form. C. Rear spoilers D. Huge headlights....will this ever go away? E. Wedge/triganular tailights....I have grown to dislike this shape....almost every car does it. F. Five spoke wheels...has become so generic.

She got all fat, cranky and nauseous for NINE MONTHS just so you could pop out and bawl your little head off. Don't forget her special day this Sunday. Last week I drove my mom to Target to pick up a wedding gift for a relative. When we got out of the car, she looked at the fender of the car parked next to us and said "Look at that, it looks like somebody put sunglasses for a person with 3 eyes on that car." I said "That's a Buick Lucerne. Those are Buick portholes."
