I am on vacation and in the Southland heading for my home in Texas to see my mother, then after that on to California. We have stopped for the night. GM will let you know what it plans to do as far as cost cutting goes within the corporation, this will happen at 8:30 AM tomorrow. Expect to see many engineers assigned to frozen projects let go, I will let you speculate on which products they are but be aware there will be a shake-up of GM's product portfolio. Most of the cuts will come from GMNA, GM's home market, some engineers have been reassigned to small-car projects, however GM will be a smaller company with a thinner product line so there could be thousands let…

I'm looking for a possible replacement for the Roadmaster. If you recall, it isn't actually mine. I go on ebay and place check marks for "Wagon" "Manual transmission" "4cylinder" "5cylinder" (gotta remember the volvos.... The most interesting entries are: Ford Escort L Wagon Diesel Ford Pinto Wagon complete with porthole window in back 1971 Datsun 510 Wagon Dodge Omni GLSH Clone with a Shelby engine from a Daytona Oh sure there's a bunch of Subarus, Saabs, and Volvos.... but I need to drive a car that really makes a statement... you know... like a quad color 1996 Roadmaster Wagon does....

Dutch Mandel--GM Next: Why it will be around for the coming century By DUTCH MANDEL As General Motors looks toward its centennial celebration in September, today might go down in its history as the moment when its corporate life was saved. That's because its much-maligned chairman, Rick Wagoner, announced massive triage measures aimed at keeping the patient alive. His message should resonate from Wall Street to Main Street. Wagoner and his creditable management team--led by no-nonsense COO Fritz Henderson--addressed all areas of the business. Yes, GM made some "easy" calls. It will hasten to shutter plants it targeted earlier in the year for closure; those facil…

Today (Sunday the 13th) was a great day for car shows... the weather was awesome andthere was a "street rod" event at Canobie Lake Park, as well as the Endicott Estate car show where I showed my '59 Buick LeSabre last year, I actually it parked tailfin-to-tailfin with a '60 LeSabre 2dr hardtop. But I missed both of those shows... an a half dozen others. In fact, shockingly I was no where near a paved road. But it's all good because SpeedingPenguin, myself & a few buddies were up in thewoods of New Hampshire at (undisclosed location) "wasting" $200 worht of Ammo & eating $50 worth of BBQ'd hot dogs & cheeseburgers. It was quite an ecle…

Is there anything good in your boss' vision of the new GM? Seriously, where are his "gotta have" products? We've yet to see anything worth talking about. Is it really all about bland, midsize FWD sedans? Surely there must be something.

Just wondering. My mom is really into this stuff. I believe in it to a certain extent, but I'm not really sure if I believe in psychics... Reason I ask is that my mom will see/talk to a psychic once every great while (every year or two) and tell me what happened. Well I usually don't agree with half the crap, but this time it might've hit home.

It was finally a nice day here today, so I decided to tackle a couple of small projects. I am soon getting a new door on the front of my house installed by others. I also have a side entrance door out of my garage and I wanted it to match the new front door, so I painted it from dark blue to white, added a new lockset and deadbolt, and put up a new motion-sensing light fixture above it. It looks nice and I'm proud of myself, but it took me freakin' forever. So, how handy are you guys with a hammer?

What we need now is one of these. Why it didn't go into production, I have no idea. It should have. Recently, at a open house at the GM Heritage Center, this little puppy showed up, fresh from a rebuild. Twin cam Cosworth engine, much like an early ecotech. 5 speed, bad ass look I think...cowl hood. F- body styling, some crappy vega parts, but sort of an early kind of Solstice/Sky feel to it...pics don't do it justice! This design was a result of the energy CrIsiS in the 70s, but the style of this unit speaks to me. Needs cool wheels and tires but otherwise excellent! I would imagine some amazing mpg with such a wedge to cut thru the air. I feel like buildin…

Well, a couple weeks ago there wasn't much work to do at work, so I got off early a couple days... as a result, I decided to detail the Goat, which was a bit dirty. In all, it took about 6 hours if I remember correctly, and I didn't even touch the interior. Washed it, clayed it, washed it again, and then waxed it with some great 3M wax (some of the best out there). After waxing the body, I waxed the wheels and shined the tires. The results:

So, I needed to rent a car last min. and almost EVERYBODY in Fresno was sold out. So Hertz had cars (and have earned my future business) but... I ended up with 3 TOYOTA keys that all led me to a graphite gray Camary. It has a 4 banger in it. I CANNOT find a comfortable seating position in it at all. The seat is retarded and the steering wheel when it is pulled all the way out and put in the highest position is still not high enough or far enough out. At night, the whole center stack (including the green plastic surroundings) lights up and is very distracting. I can't ever get the car to go into gear without looking at the stupid jagged shifter. A Malibu wagon please. 1. Don't try to go the Dodge route and load it up with testosterone, just a wagon of the existing car please. 2. Make the 4cylinder/6speed option available You already have a great interior, something the Magnum never had. You'd be the only one on the market except the Mazda 6 and that one is going away. You'd have a great stepping down point from the larger CUVs and SUVs for families that finally realize they don't need so much car. You could tout it being cooler than a mini-van, more efficient than an SUV/CUV and able to haul just about as much stuff.

A bit of a rant, but these things happened over the last few weeks and I can't get over how dumb all 5 are. #1. My Buddy Steve runs a body shop, did the body work on my 71 Chevelle and my 55 Chevy and also has fixed my other cars, including the Safari van when it got hit by a truck. Steve took a BMW Salvage title rebuild down to the Ohio State highway patrol to get it checked out so he could sell it. He noticed a very nice 65 Corvette Convertible (red, restored) being hauled away with the impounds to a company that crushes cars. He asked them what they were doing with the Vette...and was told that they were crushing it for reasons they couldn't discuss. Why in…

Thursday morning, as the sun was rising, you were setting. You never acted your age. You wrote the book on growing old gracefully. Though it was only your body that grew old. I don't think your mind was ever past 40. You were more modern and in-tune than people half your age. A gay grandson wasn't even remotely an issue for you. What a pleasant surprise it was to have an 80-something grandma ask about boyfriends. Pretty great for an old farm girl. Thursday morning, with a son and daughter at your side, your heart decided it was time to go. He can easily escape/run away (no pun intended to Ford) from the next gay driver he smashes into since this car has no doors or roof. It will allow him easy access, always a plus to the car too. It will also allow him to tan on those HOTTTT AMISH days in Lancaster, PA. I've recently started a new job (about a month ago) working for the same company but in a new city. Before my brother's wedding last weekend, he sent me an email, inviting me to a BBQ this weekend. I had every intention of going camping this weekend, and I told him what I was going to do, with the qualification that if it rains, I would be at his house and not stuck in the woods in a tent waiting for the sun. It rained. I read the email as the BBQ was going to be today, and I was all set to show up at my bro's house this afternoon... but, stupid me, I reread the email last night, and the BBQ was yesterday at 3 pm. Now I missed out on camping and my brother's BBQ. Happy 4th, oh yeah. And I feel guilty for not paying closer attention to the date in his note. He le…

Me and a few friends (Sixty8, speedingpenguin, etc.) have been toying with the idea of going in on a pre-war vehicle (car, truck, panel truck, doesn't matter; just has to strike us) together and making a low-budget hot rod out of it for quite some time. We want it to be something unique and different, i.e. not a Ford or Chevy or Dodge. Recently I stumbled onto something that certainly fits that bill, but it is incredibly rare. Not like Duesenberg rare in terms of value or desirability, but something still incredibly rare. It's beat to death, rotted to death, but still there enough to be saved with a bajillion hours of metalwork. Its original chassis with all its running g…

I eventually deleted that thread not wishing to add further stagnation to the stormy climate here at Cheers and Gears. This bit of news was the "breaking point" for me earlier this week, having witnessed two family members fall victim to the disease prior. I really didn't know how to handle that news. However, I recently received the good news that they are no longer certain that he has cancer. I am relieved to say th…

Then it got really weird, because now I keep getting the same messages I was getting 5-7 hours ago. One text came with time stamps of 5:20, 5:21 and 5:21 then again at 10:50, 10:50 and 10:51. I have unlimted texting, so if it keeps up, it wont cost me, but its really annoying, since my text alert is, "PC Load Letter,…

It's finally come around, not just that I've pondered doing it, but that I'm selling the Fleetwood and moving on to something newer, much smaller, more efficient, etc. For the longest time (and to keep the finances smiling), the idea was something new but used (and quite a bit so) that fulfilled the smaller and more economical but that could be another cash purchase. Think late 90's Accord, and you'll have gotten the drift. Then that went, well, sort of to the side. I graduated college and while not yet making huge money yet or in a dream job, I'm working with a great company at home for the time being and am making a nice chunk. I love the Fleetwood dearly and it …

I wrote this on Wednesday for my blog, I'm just going to copy and paste since I don't feel like dwelling on this subject any more than I have to. "I'm going to try to keep this one pretty short... possibly without much structure considering my emotions right now. It's just that, this is the first time I've been home since Sunday. I didn't figure on it when I headed for Dubois that night. I expected to be back Monday after hanging with Salvy and Jay. Come Monday morning, I get a call from my Mom. She was going to see my Grandma who had been in the hospital since last Wednesday for her cancer treatments, or whatever it exactly was. I had wanted to see her and had some ti…

Main machine here at the Balthazar Ranch is a Dell running Windows XP. As such- there are 'user profiles' so you can log on to each desktop- there are 4 of us, each with his own, and both the adults have password-protected profiles.... and only those 2 profiles are set-up to access the internet. My 2 sons' profiles cannot access the internet and they don't have our profiles' passwords. In due dilligence, I try and keep an eye on the older son's activities (he's 14), esp when on the 'net. He DOES have AIM. Can any internet-based pages be accessed thru AIM, because he's looking at some sort of text and what looks like harmless, amateur-level B&W drawings... but they a…

Here is a letter that you can use to pass the info on to your local media. Make sure to read the report and check out the video. I think ANY automotive fan would find it of interest. I have a news story that I think would intrigue many viewers. There is a product purchased by "A" celebrities to show they are "green". This product violates human rights and most people don't know it. The story is about workers rights on a company that many people in the US associate with an environmentally positive company. Please check out http://lauraflanders.firedoglake.com/2008/...t-worker-abuse/ and http://www.nlcnet.org/admin/media/document...N_FINAL_WEB.pdf Than…

A wide variety this month. If this were a judged event, I'd have given this little Nova best in show - everything about it was just so "right".

Aside from sitting on C&G what are your hobbies? I have 2 main hobbies... Winter Hobby, snowmobiling. Used to do more ice drag racing but backed away from that to put some cash toward hobby #2 ('68 Camaro PT build). Here was my Pro-Stock 1000 that I built a couple years back. 1000cc 3 cyl 255hp. Ran 1/8 mile (660 feet) on ice in 5.5 at 122 mph. Not the fastest but respectable at the time. Trail sled '07 Polaris 700. Adding some NOS to it for this coming season. The kit is currently on the bench. 140 hp stock, 150 with pipe and mild upgrades. NOS will be an added 30-40hp shot. video Hobby #2... '68 Camaro Pro-Touring project. Stil…

PANEL TRUCKS 1 2
by XP715- 52 replies

Back in the days before people all pussied out and bought vans and box vans and trailers to transport their work equipment, REAL men and women drove panel trucks or sedan deliveries to get the job done. Please share! I would probably step over my own mother to have a 1948-1953 Chevrolet or GMC one-ton panel like this one, only mine would ideally be a work-worn original. Not really a fan of the 1954 models because of the one year only ugly grille (at least on the Chevrolet) and the one year only one-piece windshield (I like the split windshield- makes the truck look that much older). A 1955-1959 model would be awesome too, and OF COURSE a pre-1948 model would be accep…

I saw this in the just sold section on ebay... A new 2008 Camry Hybrid in Jasper Pearl with tan leather, look what he paid for it 33,500, 2K over sticker on a loaded Camry hybrid goes for 31K was this guy on crack who bought. People really would pay over sticker on an ugly boring midsizer? What kind of dumb-f*cker a-buys a Toyota and then pays more than its worth. Wasn't like it was a somewhat cool Land Cruiser or 4Runner but a Camry Hybrid give me a an f*cking break. Toyota buyers, figures. So what do you guys think? This makes me want to get a G8 GT for less and put a nasty Toyo hating and hybrid bashing bumper sticker on it... Something with the words V8 and "F*CK O…

As a timberwolves fan each year it is becoming more and more hilarious how we draft others superstars and trade them away like toddler clothes you give away to the second hand store for a dollar. RAY ALLEN BRANDON ROY (roy=rookie of the year) now this year McFail gives away a promising OJ Mayo and also Chalmers. the level of humor with his deals get worse each year. How in the HELL can we get rid of him? and then trading Garnett too? my gosh.

Me: Going straight at 40+mph having just made a left to right lane change Her: Pulling out of a Home Depot parking lot The results: We're both fine (physically). Rather than go through her insurance company and have them nickel and dime me when I'm not at fault, I'm just going through mine and will let them bill hers. I have an appt. with a GEICO express shop tomorrow at 7AM, and they'll have a rental there.

I've got plenty of ideas on this front, but I want to hear yours. How would you leverage, manage, adapt, modify, collect, or otherwise tweak GM's brand structures into a more workable state? Don't give me lists of cars to add, or switch, or eliminate for each brand, instead describe the approach you would take and the framework of that approach.

It was a Grey day, but still a good day to drive our Hot Rods to work.... The 100 year anniverary GM Car Show was better than last year's show, but lacked the sunshine and enthusiasm of some others I have seen....A lot of LS powered cars were in attendence, and I took a lot of pics, but afterwards they seemed lame because of the cloud cover. Anyway, some rides captured the feel so here they are: Rare Beautiful Buick ....Guess wtf it is! Jimmy's Buick -this guy has a barn full of cool cars Coolest Rat in attendence by far! 2nd coolest....Mopar w/ ford power ....go figure. cool fabs everywhere Chris Karras is a good guy I know...Even tho h…

I admit it, I am a complete caffeine addict. Coffee is ok, but nothing gets me going like a nice, unhealthy Rockstar or Rumba, or if I can find it, some Bawls. Like cocaine, only available at gas stations. But today I had a weird experience, I drank my usual mornign Rockstar, and afterwards I was extremely jittery and restless, which never happens to me. I didn't crash either, just kinda slowed back down to normal. It was weird and kinda freaky. I think I'm gonna cut back now.

Last night the Silverado had a fight with a stump - the Silverado won, but there has been "collateral damage". I'll try to post a pic or two tomorrow. One fender is toast and I'm going to need a grille understructure and likely, a turn signal assembly. Flying stumps pack a serious punch.
