SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea boasted of being a "proud nuclear power" and threatened Monday to harm the U.S. if attacked as tensions mounted over a possible crackdown on exports of suspected missile parts from the North. President Barack Obama said the U.S. is ready to cope with "any contingencies" involving North Korea and vowed not to "reward belligerence and provocation." South Korea's YTN news network reported Sunday that a U.S. Navy destroyer tailing a North Korean ship suspected of carrying missiles and related parts was headed toward Myanmar in what could be the first test of new U.N. sanctions against the North over its recent nuclear test. The sanctions…

We have come to an agreement on how to handle political threads on C&G. For at least this political season, such threads will be allowed with the following caveats. 1. Any thread will have to maintain the same level of civility with or without political discussion. 2. No campaigning - period. 3. Any overt nastiness will lead to the topic being locked or deleted. 4. Any thread that has politics as its topic must only be posted in the lounge. 5. We reserve the right to re-invoke Rule #2 if things get out of hand. 6. All political threads must be clearly indentified as such in the title or subtitle. 7. Comment on the candidates, issues, or parties - not th…

Found this in the Hemmings eWeekly newsletter.. One for the Rust Belt See, what goes around really does come around. Word comes to us of Mack Trucks Inc.’s plans to move its highway truck production from its New River Valley plant in Virginia to that traditional stronghold of the Bulldog (and classic vehicles in general), Macungie, Pennsylvania. The big rigs will be built alongside construction and trash trucks that are already assembled in Macungie, in a factory that’s nearly across the street from the onetime Mack museum in the same town. It’s a reversal of the timeworn practice of shifting such manufacturing jobs to the South. The New River Valley plant, inciden…

From the CATO Institute. Mourning the Loss of a Great American Capitalist While the big news of the day wouldn’t seem to have a public policy angle, Michael Jackson’s death allows us to remember that such phenomenal career achievements can only be possible in an economic system that rewards and harnesses talent. The King of Pop’s creativity allowed him and his family to make hundreds of millions of dollars, yes, but it also created thousands of jobs in the music and marketing industries and brought joy to fans around the world. Whatever his personal eccentricities — perhaps, in part, as a result of them — Jackson represents a capitalit success story. No central pl…

GM gave me the 2010 SRX for a long weekend. Quite a good car. With the AWD and adaptive "FE3" suspension, the handling starts to feel almost Audi-like. Looks great inside and out. Absolutely kills the RX in styling. I didn't really like the way the SRX looked on the outside at first, but the more I see it, the more I like it. Just one of those cars you need to see in person.

Has anyone else seen or owned the series? I watched the first one a while ago, but last weekend I went out and bought the remastered Dirty Harry 5-pack DVD collection and am through the first four films. Even though The Enforcer seems like the weakest one so far (haven't watched Dead Pool yet), one of my favorite scenes of the set is the one from Enforcer where he rams the car into the store during the robbery.

So I have a friend who is finally getting rid of his learners and getting his full license. He told me he was buying a car for 500$ from his great uncle and that it was American and he thought it was a GM but beyond that he didn't know what it was as the name of the car was unfamiliar (he couldn't quite remember it). He described it as a "big white coupe" with red leather upholstery and that the car was MY 1990. I came by there today only to find out that the car he spoke of was a 1990 Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo in white with the Garnet leather interior. It has 100'000 miles and is in pretty decent shape. It has the fully functional factory original Oldsmobile Visu…

Just to clarify for the one or two who did not get it, the remark about insta-banning PINGAS meme posters for being "trolls" was a joke, an example of dry humor. I was pretty sure that anyone remotely paying attention since, oh, about 2002 would have figured out that I have a very dry sense of humor, but apparently not. Is PINGAS no longer funny? Oh, absolutely. It is played out beyond belief, as I and numerous other posters have pointed out. BUT--insta-banning PINGAS offenders was just NOT a serious suggestion. I'm well aware that this site has a process of raising a "warning level" in 20% increments, imposing posting approval, temporary time outs from posting, and…

[source: Wall Street Journal] Climate Bill Passes Key Procedural Hurdle in House Democrats Still May Not Have Votes for Final Passage By IAN TALLEY and SIOBHAN HUGHES WASHINGTON -- A landmark climate bill narrowly passed a key procedural hurdle in the House Friday, a sign that leadership may just barely have enough votes for final passage later in the day. Republicans said the bill included the largest tax increase in American history. It passed by a vote of 217-205. To ensure final passage, the bill needs 218 votes. Passage of the controversial bill will hand Democrats and President Barack Obama a major vic…

I was just thinking the other day about one of my favorite cars and of all my cars i have been through i think my favorite cars was my 1980 Oldsmobile Omega 2 door with the iron duke in a deep black. I remember beating it to death and jumping it off of rail road tracks with friends. I also remember rebuilding the engine when i blew it up. I sold it to my neighbor at the time (1989 ish) for i think $150. The body was still clean and straight. I wish I would of kept that car. Just bored here so i figure i would ask you guys about one of your favorite cars you have ever owned either current or in the past.

SEOUL, South Korea — Punching their fists into the air and shouting "Let's crush them!" some 100,000 North Koreans packed Pyongyang's main square Thursday for an anti-U.S. rally as the communist regime promised a "fire shower of nuclear retaliation" for any American-led attack. Several demonstrators held up a placard depicting a pair of hands smashing a missile with "U.S." written on it, according to footage taken by APTN in Pyongyang on the anniversary of the day North Korean troops charged southward, sparking the three-year Korean War in 1950. North Korean troops will respond to any sanctions or U.S. provocations with "an annihilating blow," one senior official vowe…

Another favorite of mine is the Albizia Julibrissin (Japanese Mimosa or Silk Tree). It is the main attraction of my front lawn in summer. The Albizia Julibrissin with its delicately scented flowers is an attractive exotic plant for the garden. Long stamen make the flowers look like a pink powder puff. Also, the pinnately (feather-like) divided leaves add to the elegant appearance of the tree. At night or in case of drought the leaves fold together (hence its common name ‘sleeping tree’ in some languages), by day they unfold again and offer a shady place to relax.

So it's been raining since what seems like forever...I think Friday night. It's really grinding my gears. In the past week I've gone to start the Prizm and twice it wouldn't start. First time was corrosion all over teh negative connector and terminal (non on the new positive one). Cleaned it up and life was good until the 2nd time. Cleaned it some more and put some grease on it. Seemed fine until i went to run an errand this morning and it did the same thing. So, while there's a break in the rain, I go and have another look at this terminal connector. Turns out it too has cracked and is ready to break. Lovely. So since I need the car for today, I take the GM and get a…

WASHINGTON -- The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House. PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside. "We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals." During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with corr…

So, I must rant. In the local trade book was a listing for a 1982 VW Rabbit for $600. I thought to myself "Hmm, intriguing." I decide to call the guy up for more information and set up a meet for tomorrow. A few hours later, he calls me back and asks if I'd like to look at it tonight. Sure, why not... I go on my merry little way over to check it out. It had 68k original miles, the interior was pretty much immaculate, and the exterior was fairly decent without any rust whatsoever. I'm thinking "What's the catch? It must not run very well." The guy starts up for me. Runs pretty damn good... its even inspected. Then, another guy shows up on a bike. They've either met prev…

I mainly just need to consider if I would rather find an aftermarket set I like better and a pay a few hundred more. That, and MK3's happen to have the same bolt pattern and offset. With my desires to return to a VW, an aftermarket set could easily with switched to another vehicle. I'm not sure if a Jetta could rock Chevy wheels. Decisions, decisions...

Well, as most of your know (or maybe don't know), I've been driving around in Chevy Luminas since I was a youngin' with a learner's permit. My first car was a '90 Euro, and my current is a '94 Euro, both 4-door sedans with the 3100. I've had the '94 now for 5 years and have racked on 70,000 additional miles (bought it with 80,000 originally). I've been saving up and am finally going to replace the old jalopy, although it will still be kept in the family as a beater car back home. It has an AC leak that will cost more than the car with worth to repair, and the rust and hail damage are major chick repellents. At the Ford dealer back home, there is a 2001 Lincoln LS V8…

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran accused the United States on Wednesday of "intolerable" meddling in its internal affairs, alleging for the first time that Washington has fueled a bitter postelection dispute. Opposition supporters marched in Tehran's streets for a third straight day to protest the outcome of the balloting. The Iranian government summoned the Swiss ambassador, who represents U.S. interests in Iran, to complain about American interference, state-run Press TV reported. The English-language channel quoted the government as calling Western interference "intolerable." President Barack Obama has reacted cautiously to developments in Iran, saying he shared the world's "…

I'll be in the Harrisburg/Carlisle area that afternoon, meeting up with someone to sell a part. Is there anything going on that I can make the trip more than just driving down 3 hours, then turning around to drive back another 3 hours. I plan on being there around 6 pm. If nothing else, I'd be willing to meet up with someone in the area.

I hope you Detroiters out there stay safe in what I can only assume will be horrific riots following the Red Wings losing Game 7 at home.

Someone around here must be more "into" pop culture than me and maybe can provide me with some help... I have noticed especially with track/wind breaker style jackets and even in fashion in general it seems alot of people are either wearing "older" clothes like from Good Will or buying new "old" style clothing. Can someone shed some light on this? Is wearing "old" clothing coming back? I have seen stuff being worn by lots of younger people lately and it was stuff that was out in many cases only about 10 years ago, and in some more like 20 or even 30. Is this a new trend around the country, or is it something going on just around me? I have really noticed it the past few m…

I've tried. I've spent some time soul-searching. And I've tried to let it go. But. like it or not, I'm still bitter about the loss of Pontiac and the G8 ST. I just can't forgive GM for this.

On Saturday, May 23 at 3:50 in the afternoon, one "Coricullus Wolfearus" did in fact find his savior. ...inside the abandoned Packard Plant in downtown Detroit of all places. Who knew? He's quite thrilled as you can see. (Though not nearly as thrilled as he'll be when he gets home in 3-4 hours and sees this thread)

Yes, I've been scarce around here. The reasons are many & varied. Prob. the biggest & most significant is that I've been trying to spend as much time as possible with both the girls. Amelia it seems is growing up twice as fast as Sofia did, sh is seven months old as of Sunday. The day before that she got her first tooth. I'm trying to get as much Q.T. with all three as possible, while catching up on a lot of non-C&G related parts of my life. I still love you guys, I love this forum. But I have to admit the news from GM these s NOT what I need to cheer me up. I get up at 3:30am, go to UPS, end my slave-labor there…

About 8 years ago, I had the distinct pleasure of watching someone sit on the fender of my '81 MC SC ... uninvited ... at a local S Elgin cruise night. I slowly made my way back to my car ... and just stood there ... watching him ... wondering how long he was planning to plant his rear end on my car's fender. I didn't wait too long; his buddy suddenly noticed that I was staring at them ... and motioned for him to move. He looked back at me, shrugged and walked away. I didn't say a word, though when I saw him leave in a spotless older (late 1960s early 1970s as I recall) Dodge, I wish I had. You really think I'd have survived unscathed had I sat on HIS car? Now, sur…

Since we seem to be at each others throats a little bit lately...let's take it "out into the parking lot" and fight over "cars' instead of stupid stuff. Here is what we can argue about-Suppose you have been picked by the Smithsonian to pick ONE GM car as a historical visual "high Water Mark" of North American car production. Let's suppose the Smithsonian will buy an example of this car and put it on permanant prominent public display. What would you pick? Also-Has to be built in North America, so PCS can't flood us with a fleet of Holdens. My pick-58-62 Chevrolet Corvette. To me even better than a 55 Nomad, 65 GTO, or other notable GM cars. That car just has the l…

Yup, the annual Ocean City, MD spring car show extravaganza is taking place tomorrow through Sunday. So I'm heading south tomorrow morning sometime. The weather forecast is iffy, but I have my room paid for at Rehoboth Guest House, so I gotta go. I hope the weather's decent. I want to post pictures when I get back, as in years past, but I think I'll only take pictures of Tin Indians this year, as a tribute. Then next weekend is Memorial Day already... time's a flyin'. I have to go to a place called Morris, PA, in Tioga County to see my little brother's freshly-purchased "cabin". Where in the heck is Morris, PA? What is it near? Ah well, can't disappoint little b…

Yesterday I saw someone learning a 3-point turn in a Driver's Ed gray Dodge Challenger! I'm so jealous.

well last monday i made my final payment of $311.62 to GMAC on my 2004 Colorado. Yesterday i got this in the mail. on my way to work today i go and do this to it. i was on my way into work like i said. i was looking at a 70ish GMC pickup and there was a 94-7 mustang in front of me. he was prolly around 10-15 car lengths ahead. well when i looked back in front of me he was 5 and was turning... i stood on the pedal and almost made it but i kissed the stang right on the rear passenger side corner. long story short it only spider webbed the mustang but did a number on my bumper. no ticket though cause the owner was cool about it. my insurance agent said …

Hey, everyone is down in the dumps here and it seems sometimes like we whine or talk politics more than we talk cars. Rules of the thread...used GM (only, no non GM) cars you'd like to own. Any car, any era. This is the thread for dreams. Chris Linky... http://www.race-cars.com/carsold/chevy/107...070395393pb.htm

Plans, plans...you know they change. So what are your plans with your current fleet? Any of the above? We all know what new cars we want, but not so much of the ones we have..... Mine- 2003(sedan) & 2004(coupe) Cavaliers....Both keepers. I'm running them both into the ground. They aren't worth much to sell anyways.......the 03 will become my beater when the wife gets a newer car, and the 04 becomes my (back to) school ride and track car. 2006 Cobalt-my current beater, looks like a keeper for now. The communting car, I'll decide after it's paid off (little over a year left). If I get a Cruze, it could make a good winter beater to keep that Cruze …

After spending a little time thinking about what the new GM is going to be like, it looks like I will always be out of luck looking for something from them. I'm now down to exactly one brand that I'd even consider generally speaking. That would be Chevy. Even there, the chances that they will build something I would want don't look good. I want a GTO-sized sport coupe/convertible, or a ute, or a wagon, with RWD and a V8 and a manual trans. Yeah, the Camaro comes close - but I want something more individual, and Chevy isn't about that these days. So I'm stuck with the very slim possibility of the VE Ute making a return as an El Camino (or GMC variant, I guess). …

Well after staying in Rehoboth, DE for 4 days, I now want a place of my own down there. And after seeing so many awesome cars in Ocean City, I now want an old car of my own. Neither of which is bound to happen any time soon, being that I'm single and don't have a partner's income to supplement my own to buy extra luxuries like that. Why does life have to be so cruel?
