I know we don't have a lot of Canadian members here... but I'm trying to get this message out and far. http://dissolvethecrtc.ca/ Are you tired of expensive phone and TV bills? Do you want your internet to show only what the big companies want you to see and drop everything else? The CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television Commission) has displayed that it has lost its direction and forgot about its organization motto: to have a fair and unbiased policy. Recent incidents, such as allowing Bell to throttle users connections and introduce Usage Based Billing to its wholesale customers (in order for Bell to control the prices of smaller ISPs) are clear indications that the CRT…

We talk about all kinds of meaningless crap in The Lounge - why not this? Everytime that the douche bag cleaning people come into our office and put in new toilet paper rolls, they place them so they dispense/roll from the bottom. It bugs the hell out of me, especially at a critical time. At home, the roll dispenses from the top. Virtually any household I've ever been to has the toilet paper dispense from the top of the roll. Does this irk you as well?

Hey everyone. At kinda the mid point of teh auto show season I was wondering if anyone made any revisions to their plans for near future (or more distant for that matter) car purchases. I had said I wanted to get the new CTS this coming fall. Well, scratch that. I love the new CTS. I think its great. But While I could easily afford a lightly optioned one with the base 3.6 at around 35k there is now way I can save up the money to buy a loaded 3.6 DI like I want without taking on payments which is a big no no for me as Ill be heading back to school full time next fall. The Pontiac G8 was made for me it seams. Loaded it will likley come in at less than 35k. IT…

For me, it's the Sentra I've got as a rental while the Miata is in the body shop. Amazingly horrible suspension and handling, cheap, thin paint, not very impressive build quality, ugly as home made sin. It is the one car on the planet not even Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear has enough sarcasm to diss. Chris

Well, I still love my car.....but damn if this isn't like ole' Murphy's Law...... I've written on here how very trouble free my CTS has been over 50K miles.....and it has with the exception of just a few minor items......my car has been a true testimonial for GM's recent reliability and durability strides..... BUT.....so my car has exactly 49,500 miles on it....and I had a couple minor issues I wanted to get taken care of before the 50K mile warranty expired.... (rear window wouldn't operate, bad, unusual static with AM stations....think there's a short in the system somewhere from the shark-fin antenna to the radio.....and a very minor exhaust noise that I've just …

So I was cooking some dinner, and reminiscing about fish sticks. I haven't had them in a while, because I love fish sticks... but they are always a disaster. For those who remember the '70s, am I crazy or has modern processes destroyed the fish stick. In the '70s, fish sticks were crispy and easy to cook... my mother made fantastic fish sticks and we had them in abundance, so they must have been cheap. In fact, I think my mother cooked them in the microwave and they still came out great. I never seem to find decent fish sticks... they never get crispy... they go from soggy to charcoal. They stick to the pan or rack and the breading falls off. The fish inside is a…

Enjoy! Their is also rebates for the dino and HM oil too..... I'm thinking the Cobalt might feast on this stuff for a while.....

Let's counter the other thread with the Jalopnik-sourced article for a second. In your opinion, what was one of the worst cars ever built that everyone seemed to buy in droves? I'm going to have to go with the Mustang II. Yeah, this and the Pinto are some of the most successful lamentable American cars that just about everyone loves to bash. But, honestly, they deserve it. First year 'Stang IIs didn't have a V8 option and came standard with a four-cylinder engine that made an oh-so-mighty 88 horsepower. Ford had to wind up scrambling to re-engineer the Mustang II to accept the 302 V8 for next year's model and, at that point, it only made 140 tired and weary horses …

Story Link LiveScience.com livescience Staff livescience.com – Mon Aug 17, 10:18 am ET Traces of cocaine taint up to 90 percent of paper money in the United States, a new study finds. A group of scientists tested banknotes from more than 30 cities in five countries, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, China, and Japan, and found "alarming" evidence of cocaine use in many areas. U.S. and Canadian currency had the highest levels, with an average contamination rate of between 85 and 90 percent, while Chinese and Japanese currency had the lowest, between 12 and 20 percent contamination. The findings were presented yesterday at the 238th National Meeting o…

Boeing just announced another major delay in their launch of the new 787 Dreamliner...a single-story twin-aisle versatile jetliner that replaces the 757/767 combo. These will be able to service LA to Denver....or LA to London. The concept is great. However, they have halted the production of the fuselage for re-design. I am wondering: - is the snag in their all-over-the-map production scheme? - or is it in the revolutionary change to composites? I don't think the first 747 saw this kind of bumbling. Pan Am signed the launch customer agreement in 1966 and its historic flight took place in Feb. 1969. Have you been following the 787 Dreamliner saga?

From my blog: If the current recession has hit Germany, it doesn’t show. Walking around Cologne there is construction everywhere. New shops going up everywhere. The stores are busy and bustling. Germany has been careful to not outsource it’s labor force to foreign markets as much as we have in the US. If German companies need cheap labor, they set up shop in the former East German territories. This way, at least the GDP stays local to Germany’s economy. Why can’t we do the same thing here? Sure, we couldn’t pay the minimal wages we pay Chinese prison laborers to sew soccer balls with their teeth, but I’m sure there are willing laborers in states like West Virginia, A…

Alright, so after a week of back-and-forth e-mailing with the owner of a slightly older used car I found for sale on a Craigslist ad, I'm planning to go check it out sometime today (likely in the early afternoon). Since it has been a LONG time since I shopped for a used car, and even then is was for a newer used car, is there a standard checklist to take along so I don't overlook anything? It would be a bonus if it was from a "Used Car Shopping for Dummies with little Mechanical Skills" book. If I like what I see, I will be asking to take it for a much more thorough inspection by an AA-approved mechanic. But I want to be able to perform a basic inspection so the selle…

Worst Car Showcase Presents: The Cadillac Cimarron Cadillac, since the dawn of its inception until the late 1970s, branded itself as the “Standard of the World.” Everyone who was anyone the world over aspired to own one; owning a Cadillac was a cornerstone of the American dream; lusting over those characteristic sharp lines was just as natural as lusting over a centerfold model in Playboy. Cadillac cars were at the top of the automotive food chain with their vast, vault-like interiors and massive, powerful engines and no other luxury car could ever come close. However, after OPEC formed and the 1970s gas crunch marched its way upon America’s shores, Cadillac’s …

For as long as I can recall, I've always dreamed of GM granting some of their fans one "wish"... and not just a free vehicle, but something along the lines of getting the chance, a'la Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory style, to see or do something that no one else in the public gets to do. Whoa, almost 4 days away from this place, how times flies when you're having fun, and when you're not. I was on vacation this week, and I needed it, I had been stressing at work and not sleeping well. I had wanted to do something other than sit home for the whole week, which would have been counterproductive to the very definition of the word "vacation", and camping is something I enjoy. The weather forecast wasn't promising, however, for the Poconos Mountains. Checking The Weather Channel site every day yielded a small window of tent-camping opportunity on Thursday/Friday, so I took the chance. And it was beautiful. Everybody I talked to up there said the entire w…

Hey, I had this friend going back to the mid-90s. She's actually a licensed architect, but she is ROUGH around the edges...more of a construction trailer lady than an architect in an office. I only befriended her because we had work things in common..and our paths would have never crossed had it not been for that. Even though she is ROUGH, she is married, but her marriage is very screwed up from what I can see. It's like a roommate marriage. Here's the basic problem: when she heads for lower ground, I tend to straighten her out (if she asks me advice or tells about her ridiculous predicaments). That is, I told her to take her stupid licensing exam, to fight for t…

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Town officials in Framingham are trying to strike out a problem. A replicated Fenway Park in a Framingham yard is causing quite a stir. Ryan O'Connor, 18, the teen who built it, and his family are now going to bat for their ballpark. The miniature Fenway Park used as a wiffle ball field is adorned with signs, including a three-by-four foot Mobil sign in centerfield. "I don't know why anyone would complain; it's not a bad field of a public nuisance at all, and the Mobil sign, I mean we're not trying to be a gas station, we just want to have some fun in the summer," O'Connor said. But seems not everyone's a fan. Complaints from neighbors hav…

I was just thinking about this after seeing an ad for a local steakhouse. Opening up a steak, or a piece of meat, and "seeing red" makes my stomach turn. I always order it well done. While I was looking at the 2 remaining G8s on the BPG lot, she was looking at a used 2006 Buick Terraza CXL FWD. Linkity 'Infectious' People Spread Memes Across the Web 08:45 12 August 2009 by Colin Barras The way that certain images, videos or concepts can suddenly spread like wildfire across the web, using email and social websites to propagate, is one of online culture's most unique phenomena. Now Spanish researchers claim to have found a way to accurately predict how quickly and widely new pieces of information, or "memes" as they are called, will spread. The ability to forecast this "viral" behaviour would be of great interest to sociologists and marketeers, among others. The secret, they say, is to recognise the fact that peo…

I've had iTunes since version 4 and remember the days when it opened quickly and everything was a breeze. Then Apple kept releasing new versions and forcing you to upgrade in order to buy from the iTunes store, which became a pain in the ass because each time they limited the number of computers and CDs you could share/burn your purchased music on. I bought the song, so I should be able to use it on as many computers as I want. I've changed computers three times since version 4.0, so each time I have to screw around with approving a new computer to play my purchased music. Now ever since 7.0 it's become a big piece of bloatware that takes about 3 minutes to open,…

An elderly gentleman owned it since new, then passed away leaving it for his kids, and then it found its way to a dealer in Stayner. It is kept in a climate controled garage! 18,827 Kilometers (11,698 Miles!!!) and perfect condition. Looks like it just came from the factory!!! They want $17,000 for it. From info I found on the net, approximately 2802 Indy Rams were built! VIDEO: PICS:

I'm looking into a sun visor upgrade for my '99 Saturn SC2. I noticed today while junkyarding that '90's Grand Am's and some other '90's and early '00's GM cars seem to share the same 3-screw mounting design. I didn't get a chance to test and see if the visors really would swap, but they look the same, and I could easily believe that Saturn dipped into the parts pin for their visor hardware. So, what I'm hoping to find is that some model/trim level that uses this 3-screw mounting design (for the swivel end) came with sun visors that had the extension flap piece. I have it in my suburban, I've had it in buicks past, and would like that little slide out extension in th…

http://www.laubly.com/1948tucker.htm This is a great write up on a great car. Owner has taken great care of this car, and is still driving it today. There was a Tucker Rally in Las Vegas and they drove it from San Fransisco. I give them props for still driving this magnificent beast on the road.

I was over to the Barnes & Noble today, looking at magazines of different genres, and the September, 2009 issue of Hot Rod caught my eye. They have a big tribute article to Pontiac, and some really cool artwork involving new ideas for customizing older Chevys. I am primarily thinking of Camino with this thread, but of course I think everyone else here would love it, too. Check it out. Also, for behind-closed-doors Design Center photo hounds like me, the newest issue of Collectible Automobile has a fantastic spread on the '73-'77 Pontiac A-body cars, LeMans, GTO, Can Am and Grand Am. Some of the design proposals are damn scrumptious!

Posted: Thursday, August 6 2009 at 03:27 pm CT by Bob Sullivan The best way to get the attention of a classroom full of rowdy kids is to turn the lights off. And the best way to get the attention of Internet users is to essentially do the same thing. Thursday’s Twitter denial-of-service hack certainly grabbed everyone's attention. Nothing like a total shutdown to make people sit up and take notice. But relatively speaking, denialof-service attacks are harmless. Everyone's been through it - CNN, Yahoo, Microsoft. Heck, Facebook and LiveJournal were hit Thursday, too, by the social media bandwidth bandit. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.) …

I need to find the headlight adjuster for a '99ish Volvo wagon (a V40 I think). If anyone has a hookup for a used one, or knows an aftermarket source, please let me know. It's a needlessly complex affair made of plastic that just dry-rots and crumbles. I was replacing the bulb for my lanlord/employer and the damn thing just gave way.

Each supercenter -- the only big box Wal-Mart builds these days -- means, on average, 300 retail jobs with a strong company. "It's the No. 1 reason" towns cite for approving construction of a Wal-Mart, said Al Norman, a critic who's been talking about Wal-Mart across the country for 17 years. "They tell me, 'Yeah, we have to bend zoning laws. Yeah, it's going to make neighbors unhappy. But it's creating jobs.' " And in the beginning, jobs do come, at least at ground zero. Immediately, there are the 50 to 100 construction jobs, which last maybe a year. Then there are the 300 new retail positions at Wal-Mart. There may well be hiring at businesses nearby that offer th…

So I had a job interview today. A recruiter place called Cyrpess contacted me asking if I wanted to come in for an interview for someone from WGBH. The interview went well, although I dn't have teh skill set he was looking for. No surprise...I'm a designer not a coder. After the interview with him, I had a second one with one of teh recruiters, who got more detailed info about me so they'll be able to better match me with potential jobs that I'm skilled in. It was about 2.5 hours total. It was a good day overall. For once, despite not having my friend's GPS I didn't get lost on the way there or back...amazing. Only problem was that in total for parking n the garag…

Have you ever done it? If not, have you at least heard of it? I've been doing it since Monday... and damn it's awesome so far. I know I've only done three days of workouts (plus I'm watching what I eat like they suggest), but it's been great so far. My body is sore all over, and I'm getting real results. I'm really just doing this to get ripped and toned, and I think it's going to work. It's the only fitness program I've ever tried, other than lifting weights here and there... and so far I'm very impressed. I weighed myself Sunday night and the scale said 151.4 lbs. This morning I weighed in at 147.2, so that's a loss of 4.2 lbs in approximately 3.5 days, so a good 1.…

We've seen witty/interesting license plates, such as these in IL: BMW AT 40, Pontiac Grand Am TUTH D K, Honda Civic coupe ...BUT ... have you noticed any plate ... ODDITIES? One morning on the way to work, I happened to glance in my rear-view mirror ... and thought I saw the word "S E X" on a license plate. As I waited to turn left off Route 58 onto Barrington Rd, the vehicle went past ... and I looked at the rear license plate ... and noticed that it was a generic IL plate that had "X35" as the first 3 characters. Wonder how THAT got past the IL sensors...?!! Cort | 35swm | "Mr Monte Carlo"."Mr Road Trip" | pig valve.pacemaker ...RT 66 = Sept 5-16, '09 WRMN…

Even though people are disillusioned by negative ads, it makes sense for politicians to employ them. Why? In most cases, negative things are remembered more than positive.... I wonder if this is because, in some cases, we are embarrassed by or don't believe we deserve the positive...? These 2 comments about me, though very cool, were just WEIRD for me to read...like I was stepping into someone else's life.... They came out of the blue.... T-REX, GMI 2008: "SPIRIT This award goes to the GMI member that has consistently over the years given us posts that lift the spirit and help us see beauty in the tiniest, and often most seemingly insignificant things. knigh…

I posted back in March about a possible surgery to repair an incisional hernia (above my belly button) that developed from my 2003 open heart surgery and made itself known in September 2008 at the NMCOA Mini Meet in Stillman Valley IL and then even more so in mid-February 2009. In March, I had decided to NOT get it repaired, since it was, according to the surgeon, small. However ... as some of you know ... that hernia had started to act up a bit more regularly the last few months (once, while I was visiting friends in Freeport IL in April) ... and with "car" and "road trip" season here, I decided enough was enough. So, Thursday, May 28, 2009, the incisional hernia was…

Well, the Clunker Program is in full swing, and I have to tell you: It makes me sick. This is the STUPIDEST thing I think the government has ever wasted our money on, and really decent cars are going to be scrapped because of it. Further, I really think if the government had half a brain, they would have demanded that the trade ins could only be made on a domestic owned lot - Ford - GM - Chrysler - so that the money came back home, not further increase the trade deficits. So, get out there, cruise the back lots and tell me what you find. I will start off with a really nice '99 Wrangler YJ 6 cylinder 5 speed hard top - no rot, great shape...needed a bath...will never…

So, I found some back up CD's from 2006. They contain a bunch of cool stuff from C&G past, as well as stuff from all over the internets. Most of this has been lost in the sands of time, so I think I will share some here. First up, is a repost from the "New GM" thread... Here is the Pontiac G6 we were supposed to get, before Bob Lutz had them simplify it! These pics come from the actual production G6 launch brochure: I made this image for C&G in '06 to show the pre-Lutz cues on the car we got: Here is a scan from GM Design showing the theme they were working on for the GMX295 program, aka 2004 Cadillac Seville. Bob Lutz ordered this car redone…

So, We were contacted by a TV producer from England. They produce a travel show that apparently is very big in England....it's on prime-time. Well, they are in Las Vegas filming an episode on the Las Vegas "lifestyle." They asked us for a Cadillac.....because, you know, Cadillac being a quintessential American car (from a bling-bling standpoint).....and Las Vegas being a quintessential American city (also from a bling-bling standpoint.) They were going to spend 30 minutes filming the Cadillac in and around Las Vegas, etc. SO....after weeks of talking with these folks, I showed up at the first location.....the "World Famous Little White Chapel" north of the Stri…
