Alright alcoholics, booze hounds, bums, winos and frat boys, we need an alcohol thread, it just seems like the perfect compliment to our sex thread. I'll start: The $3 bottles of wine they sell at Wal-Mart suck majorly. So whats your drink of choice? What do you avoid like the plague?

Lately I have picked up running / jogging after having been mostly inactive the past couple years (with the exception of lifting weights on occasion). I started off pretty hard, doing two miles and running about half of it and getting a little winded, but otherwise fine. The second time was easier, but my legs began to get a little sore and I started getting shin splints (however that has gone away). The third time I ran for 3/4 of the route and got home and my legs were spasming, and then sore for days afterward. This was about three weeks ago. Ever since then, I have been unable to run hard; I start running and the calf in my right leg feels weak to the point whe…

Just another one of those little annoyances in life that irks the hell out of me. The mouse I'm using on my computer right now is so damn useless. It's the garbage old-fashioned kind that uses a ball instead of the newer (and much better) optical laser or whatever. It never wants to move smoothly anymore despite me cleaning it out several times. I always have to bang the thing against the desk to get it to work semi-properly. You can imagine how much of a PITA this is when you're trying to work in Photoshop or anything that requires precision. <_< It doesn't even have a scroll wheel for God's sake. I'm gonna pick up a cheap optical mouse w…

The P-Mate enables women to urinate upright September 19, 2005 The P-Mate is disposable paper device which enables women to urinate easily while standing up. It is in common usage in Europe since launching four years ago and is marketed as a convenient, hygienic, portable, leak proof, discreet, no-brain solution to the bad sanitary and problematic circumstances which continually confront women, particularly at mass gatherings. The P-Mate has become an entrepreneurial success story in Holland where Moon Zijp conceived the P-Mate while traveling in Indonesia, designed it at the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam and commercialised it to national and global acclaim as a clever …

I spent the entire day yesterday on the beach at Assateague, near Ocean City, MD. For my trip home, I decided to come back through my old town of Easton, MD, to check out the GM dealership I worked at for 10 years before moving to PA in 2003. It went out of business and has since been sitting empty, I guess it's been about a year now. I was glad to see an area dealer group's name on the front of the building, and new Chevys and Cadillacs once again sitting for sale out front. I hope they can make a go of it, as the old owners were a local fixture for decades and the location is ideal.

The Newest Wonder of the World: The Ruins of Modern Greece WSJ ATHENS—Georges Kalaras used to view with pride the sports hall built near his home here for the 2004 Olympic competition in rhythmic gymnastics and ping pong. Now, he gets mad every time he jogs by. "Look, it's locked!" shouted the 38-year-old Mr. Kalaras, who works for the Athens city water company. Two stray dogs tangling with each other behind a padlocked metal fence accounted for the only activity in the complex, which seats 5,200 people. Mr. Kalaras figured the steel and glass hall, costing taxpayers $62 million, would provide recreational space in his neighborhood. Officials envisioned concerts or s…

Well, I am on vacation next week, and boy, do I need it. Relaxation. New scenery. No schedule. Sounds so good. This morning, I am heading up to Tioga County, PA, to join family for a cookout for Dad at my brother's cabin. Should be a good time. I return tomorrow evening, and then everything's wide open. The beach, camping... not sure what I'll do, but at least it won't be in that office. For all you Dads, Sons and Daughters, have a good Father's Day.

I'm thinking about attending a solo autocross some weekend with the LS. Apparently Des Moines SCCA does them on a regular basis. I think it'd be fun as heck to do, but I don't know where to start and since I have no experience on a track, don't know if I'm going to make myself look like a fool. How welcoming are these events to novices? Am I going to be the only one with a stock sedan while everyone else has a tricked out sports car? How hard are these events on your vehicle?

Last week in a tight Rehoboth Beach parking lot mid-day, I THINK I may have hit the spare tire tread on the back of a CR-V with the very bottom corner of my Av's rear bumper...didn't notice a thing until someone pointed out a scuff & scratch later. Friend in car said close, but didn't think I was that close...or someone just hit me. Hard to tell from how it actually looked & where I was. Rag, quick detail spray, scratch remover, touch up paint for 2 chips, gone. Still weird being under the bumper edge mostly...I think someone hit me in the lot. Rear camera alert...love it. The good news, no more dent: The bad news, my inspection ran out. And then... hours later, my dad was out in the Sunfire and senile old man backed into him on Main Street.

What happened to America's Middle Market Brands? With the demise of Mercury Ford Motor Company no longer has a mid-market brand. They are not unique in this marketing strategy nor are they alone in cutting brands over the last few years. Perhaps the most interesting point is all Automakers are moving away from mid-market brands. We saw this in 2000 when General Motors announced they would phase out the Oldsmobile division. GM cited slow sales and poor returns on investments made into Oldsmobile as the key reasons why the brand went under. Rick Wagoner told Sam Donaldson of ABC in an interview: "If everyone who is now telling me what a terrible thing I've done had …

What, to you, is the best noise you've ever heard come from a car (or truck)? In your response you should, if possible find a video or sound clip for all of us to hear and enjoy it. I've thought about this one for a while. I love the sound of V8's. Ferrari V8s make some fantastic noise, however I generally prefer a deeper note. Top examples include the Corvette ZR1, Challenger SRT8, Mustang GT500, and V8 Vantage. I love V8's and plan to own one at some point. With that sound, the best sound I have ever heard is none of those. It's not a V8 either. The best sound for me comes from the Lamborghini Murcielago, specifically the LP670-4 SV. The way it revs and howls just mak…

The Economics of Immigration Are Not What You Think NDN Waves of new immigrants often spark economic anxiety and cultural discomfort, as well as occasional violence and wide-net crackdowns, on the Arizona model. Even here, a nation comprised almost entirely of immigrants and their descendants, we’ve seen these reactions not only in recent times but also a century ago, when waves of poor immigrants from Europe arrived here. With a hundred years’ distance, however, we can now see that those early waves of immigration were generally associated not with economic dislocation and national decline, but with extraordinary economic boom times and America’s emergence as the world…

Summer's coming/here, and inevitably, I have received my annual fyreworks catalog in the mail, despite (& in spite ??) of the disclaimer that NJ & DE residents cannot buy, transport, possess or operate fyreworks without a permit. Many years ago, a temporary co-worker got me a great grab-bag of fun, and about 4 years ago, a brief-cased sized box of them --that survived a to-the-ground building fire (they were in the walk-in safe)-- likewise provided more fun. I'd really like to get some more, and the catalog is SO enticing. Pyro-Impact, Big Bomb Jumbo Cracker, Red, White & Boom... sigh! Anyway, there's a few fyrewerks stores in PA, one in Easton.... any of y…

I've noticed a lot of these over the last year or so...not sure if it's an Arizona thing or something else. It's a small dark blue square with two horizontal yellow bars. Looks like a yellow equals sign '=' on a blue square. Anyone have any idea what it means?

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Space shuttle Atlantis thundered away on its final voyage to orbit Friday, hoisting an experienced crew of six and a full shipment of space station gear. Atlantis sped through a perfectly clear afternoon sky, blazing a trail over the Atlantic before huge crowds eager to catch one of the few remaining shuttle launches. Its destination is the International Space Station, which was soaring over the South Pacific at the time of liftoff. The shuttle should catch up with the orbiting complex and its six residents Sunday. More than 40,000 guests — the biggest launch-day crowd in years — descended on the Kennedy Space Center, all of them eager to witness…

One day, when the great automotive enthusiast in the sky allows me to win the lottery, this would make a great racing circuit for all of Pa's enthusiasts and its visitors to enjoy. Think of it as our version of the Nurburgring. Unofficially 21.5 miles long, its filled with a little bit of everything. The northern section is very technical and winds through a nice hilly area. Many 90 degree turns, successive switch-backs, and blind curves. There is an awesome portion that winds around a cemetery as it suddenly drops into a valley; a favorite of mine. The southern section is more high speed based with more straights, beginning and ending with tight, near 180 degree turns. A…

I'm curious if you guys know anything about this college. College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mi.. I noticed some fairly big names are in the alumni, such as the designer for the Ford GT and Chrysler 300. I've been looking into schooling lately and this campus appears to be good bet for the Automotive Design field and its not overly far away. Tuition and housing would run about $35-$40k a year, which would hopefully be covered by Financial Aid.

I hate quarterly deployments. Worked from home for 4 hrs Friday morning, did stuff (laundry, etc) around the house Friday afternoon, been in the office now since Friday 6pm w/ my team doing deployments of applications to production servers (conference call w/ people across 4 US time zones and India). Should have taken an afternoon nap. Hope to go home and get sleep within the next hour...

How long is your work commute? If it's a long commute, how do you manage it? I'm curious because I a company has contacted me with interest, but if I hypothetically got the job, it's 1 hour and 49 minutes each way. I don't know if I could do that 5 days a week. If you have a commute like that, how do you manage it?

Heading home after going to a wake for my friend's grandfather, I'm in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway, slowing down for a red light. Noone's in front of me, and cars are on either side of me. Just as I'm about to pass a white GMC cable truck that's on my right, said cable truck juts out into my lane. I can't do anything but jam on the brake pedal and hope for the best. I nail him in the tire, and he takes out my front bumper, scrapes my fender and headlight, and knocks out assorted plastic parts that I can't identify right now because I'm so pissed. The driver is very clearly out of it, either via alcohol or pot or something. The cop gets there and doesn't pay any mi…

2001 Ford Focus ZX3: 2.0L DOHC Zetec 4 cylinder (130 HP) 5 speed manual transmission 1157 lbs 13 gallon fuel tank. 2001 Ford Mustang GT convertible: 4.6L SOHC V8 (260 HP) 4 speed automatic transmission 1533 lbs 15 gallon fuel tank. From my house to "the city" (You know, the one the lady with a little too much gum in the Avalon commercials refers to): 124 miles. Yet somehow, by my calculations, I get almost the same fuel mileage... It's magical, I tell ya! A few things to consider though; 95-97% of that trip is highway and I am an exceptionally smooth driver. I use cruise control, 5 MPH over the speed limit, the whole way. First leg of the trip is 70-75 MPH, s…

I thought I'd share this with you guys, I figure the tinkerers, RWD fans, V8 fans, and plain crazy people will get a kick out of this. It's a 1999 Dodge Intrepid that a member of LHF has been converting RWD, V8 powered. There's 30 pages and counting of the progress so far. It's a very cool read, check it out. http://www.lhforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=16536 And of course,a video.

Been meaning to ask this question for a while- wondering if anybody could provide me with some insight. With the real estate market in the crapper and some pretty cherry foreclosure deals to be had, my folks have finally started seriously thinking about buying a place in greater Phoenix. This would be basically a vacation home sort of aim (Condo + Garage most likely) of course there are other things to deal with in setting something like that up. My dad wanted me to see if I could find out what vehicle registration laws are like in Arizona which would be determinant on whether we bring a vehicle down or buy one there to put in the garage. Obvious preference would be…

Hey, what do you guys put on your hot dog? I don't eat too many, but when I do, I've been mixing up pineapple preserves with pickled jalapeno as a relish... YUM. Post your hot dog toppings here, if you dare.

Whether the road is "less traveled" or "heavily traveled", looking ahead is fun ... most of the time. These are a few "road shots" I've taken; since I'm sharing different ones with different groups/boards, I may add more later.... Anyone else have shots of "the road ahead"? This has been an albatross of sorts for me professionally. I started it back in late July last year, but with all the rain last summer, a few months off for winter, minor surgery, and other jobs tossed into the mix, I did not finish construction on this until yesterday. It was fraught with unknowns. Tho the plans were done up by an architect, he never shot a single elevation, and ultimately 25 yards of dirt had to be removed. Tho he spec'd the upright posts as cedar- he never spec'd the horizontal wall slats as anything. They turned out to be cedar, too, and the material costs ballooned. All the thinner horizontals had to be ripped- you cannot get 3" wide cedar planks. T…
