Cars that sold poorly, but you still see everywhere There are some models out there, like the GMC Envoy XUV shown above, that have a reputation for selling very poorly. Yet in some cases, these poor selling vehicles seem to pop surprisingly frequently. The Envoy XUV sold just over 12,000 copies during it's abbreviated lifetime yet I see them all over my area. Within a mile of my house, there are not one, but two families with two of the poor selling, popular to bash, Pontiac Aztecs sitting in each driveway. Our local Isuzu dealer did a good job clearing out the remaining I-series pickups because there is a huge amount of them running around lately. So what do you se…

With most of my free time eaten up by work, I don't get many chances to take pictures anymore, shame since its what I love to do. Wish I could make a carrier out of it. Anyway, drove by the river on my way home from work and it looked too inviting to pass up on, so here's just a couple good photos I took In them is part of the L. S. Starrett Company building, which is based in Athol and apparently the last precision tool manufacturer to produce tools in the US.

*NOTE* : Please don't make this political, I really want some input on this and I can't get that if the thread gets locked. What I'm looking for here is a bit of brainstorming on a concept I've been thinking about. I'm not sure where it will lead me yet, but I want to hear some reactions. Imagine a society in which all forms of lending for profit are illegal, and the law is strictly enforced. Investment would be legal as would interest-free loans, as in "hey, can I borrow five bucks 'til payday?". What I'm interested in is what this society would be like. How would it work? What would be the unintended consequences? How would social norms be affected? Just, well, every…

Price was right, pulled the Solstice wheels and added a set of dipped SKY wheels. Not a Turbo I got this thing for under $10K before tax so I took it, wife loves it. Always liked the Solstice alot, it's just the SKY looks so much better. I kinda like owning two orphan brands, maybe I'll look for a clean Oldsmobile next.

If you live in a state that a.) has been awash in rainstorms for days on end and b.) borders the Mississippi or Ohio Rivers, there is a great certainty that you've probably heard about the Army Corps of Engineers blowing a hole in the Bird's Point Levee in Missouri to relieve residents of Cairo, Illinois of any serious flood threat while, simultaneously, destroying 130,000 acres of prime farmland in Missouri. A tragic story that's slightly twisted in what sacrifice it makes, but nonetheless interesting considering what geological region this story has unfolded within. I'm of course talking about the New Madrid fault line here, which encompasses the states of Illinois, In…

So the Challenger can run on either 87 or 89 octane unleaded fuel and today I put about a quarter tank in it to see how far it would take me. Mixed mpg is rated at 20, but what I discovered was far more startling. The Chally only made that quarter tank last 30 miles using the Eco light in the trip odometer. A bit disappointed, I spent $50 bucks on a full tank of 89 octane gas and that just about tripled my mileage. After driving 40 miles the gauge hasn't really moved. The extra 11 cents per gallon (87 is $3.79 and 89 was only $3.90) might be worth it. But what I think is interesting is that I can remember 87 octane being of a much better quality than it is now, even at…

Over the past several days I've been thinking of intrigued's new 2012 Mustang GT Premium response in the "Any changes to your "automotive family" soon?" thread and how there is not a vehicle I currently drool over that I could afford now or next year (trust me, I drool over the 2011 GMC Sierra Denali plenty, just cannot afford a new one now or in the near future). I remember in the late '80s through the mid part of this decade always lusting over something attainable. I guess the prices today, the lack of funds and credit on my end, just make it impossible for me to lust over anything much. However, there is something I wish I could have, if offered here in the states,…

Volkswagen uses incorrect information for their owner's manuals. Recently, the brake lights on the Golf went out. The first thing I did was look to the owner's manual to check the fuse. What do you know? The fuse it had listed for the brake lights was intact. That's odd... must be the brake light switch. After switching that out for one out of the Jetta, I knew something had to be up. I had a sheet I printed out previously for relay information and it also happened to have fuse information on it. I got it off of VW Vortex back in the day. I decide to check it to see what it says... Owner's Manual: VWV Print-out: Needless to say... the latter was correct...

Okay, not really mine per say and I'm just a user along with the rest of the department, but starting in May I'll be able to drive this rig on my own: It's a 2008 Ford F-350 Super Duty Crew Cab/utility body that serves as the Traffic Unit/Fire Police vehicle for my local Emergency Services department. Last May I joined the department and by the end of the year was earmarked for fire police. I attended the required course in March, passed and now can serve with the department in that capacity. I have submitted a copy of my driving record last month and it should be official that I can drive the traffic unit truck on calls starting in May. The picture was taken las…

The driver of the Olds, Marc, was going with his wife to plan the funeral of his three grandchildren, when he was killed along with his wife Misty. A VERY emotional court room...kind of sad really. Recently, one of the fog light housings on my Golf failed and let water drown out the bulb, lens, and optics. The result was destructive corrosion that ruined any chance of salvaging the light. So, as anyone clearly would, I set out to tear it all apart and find out what makes the projector lens work in such a superior way over a reflector optics lens more commonly used throughout the auto industry. The answer is quite simple, literally. The eye of the projector lens is just a small domed glass lens held a specified distance from the bulb and optics. A cut-off shield is in place to do what the name suggests; cut off the light from projecting into unwanted directions. …

Went to pick up my new vehicle on the evening of March 15th. Was greeted by my saleskid as I got my last few things out of the truck. Was cheerfully handed the key to the car as he went inside to ready the final paperwork. So I went to open it up... transmitter wouldn't unlock car. Key wouldn't unlock lock cylinder in door. (Dealership has two locations, my car came from their other store 15 miles north). Turns out, wrong spare key was sent along, so key had to be ordered from FoMoCo. No big deal. A Euro-style key with internal cuts, local dealer has no cutter for it. Primary key works, of course, that's how they drove the car to my selling location. Two weeks a…

...that I finally buy something I can play around with and take to shows/cruise nights. I've been looking for years, and always wishing and wanting something to call my own. Whether it is a Pontiac Grand Prix ('80s vintage), a T/A GTA ('91/'92), a GMC (mid-'50s pickup, '91 Syclone, '80s Caballero, fullsize early '90s Jimmy), I am going to make it a personal goal to make this happen. I'm tired of going to car shows and admiring someone else's ride and when they ask what I have, tell them nothing. I have a small gold mine sitiing in my basement (boxes of toys collecting dust), and two online outlets to utilize (Craigs list and eBay), so I have to make this happen for me…

Does anybody have connections or know someone that can look up the service history on an '02 Ford Explorer? I just bought this truck and the rear liftgate needs some attention. I have heard a rumor that there may be a relevant recall, but I'm not sure how to find out. I would like to be educated before I go into a dealership. I'm also curious about the maintenance history of the vehicle.

Coming home from the beach today, it was raining a bit. I had the intermittent wipers on. As it started to rain harder, I turned them up faster, notch by notch, until I got to the fastest intermittent speed. At the same time, I was getting out of town and speeding up on the highway. Then I thought I had a problem, until I figgered it out. As I reached 55 mph, my wipers started working continuously. If I let the car go slower than 55, they reverted back to intermittent. Cool! And an intuitively useful feature. Have you ever discovered, by accident, any cool features on your car?

So I took a trip to visit a couple of my friends who live 85 miles from where I am. Ended up taking the Civic, which my brother drives, because I don't trust the '95 LSS on the highway for that long, and I figured I'd save quite a bit of gas... On the way there I went 80-85 most of the time with a group of cars. The tank wasn't full to begin with and the Civic does not have a mileage calculator onboard, so I have no idea what mileage I got on the way there. However, on the way back I filled up about a mile from the interstate, set the cruise to 61mph (I decided I should cruise at 2000rpm, don't know why I thought that was a good number to pick, just did). I was by myself…

I wonder how long it will take for the negative PR wheels to start turning on this one... BARKHAMSTED, Conn. -- Fire officials suspect an electric hybrid car may have sparked an overnight blaze in a garage in Barkhamsted on Center Hill Road. Homeowner Storm Connors and his wife, Dee, said they awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm around 4 a.m. The couple said they have lived in the home for nearly 40 years. They built it and raised their children there, so when the flames took over their attached garage Thursday morning, burning it down to its beams, the couple started to panic. They said they were worried they were going to lose their home and the memories inside. "I w…

Because it's that time of the month... or year, rather. One of those times is probably a better way to put it. It's something I frequently go though. To put it simply, I'm never satisfied; always looking for something refreshing and new (to me). It's essentially a flavor of the month affair, but in an automotive sense. If you were unable to grasp where I'm heading with this, I'll spell it out for you. I'm looking for another car, and rather seriously, at that. While I've found joy in my current vehicles, I find myself aspiring to greater offerings. One thing has always rang true and that is my love for amenities. My uncle in Grand Rapids is one of the first 2 in that side of the state to get one. He came down to our place today with his black Volt. He's had it for 3 weeks. Got to take it for a spin. Nice driving car. When first powered up and pulling out of the driveway it was on battery until getting on the road and starting to accelerate (keep in mind I'm over 2 hours away from his place so the battery was already depleted). Only when I started slowing down for the stop sign did I hear the motor running. When did accelerate hard for a stretch and you could then hear the motor rev up higher due to the harder acceleration. A friend of mine was asked to work for, an by the woman who's car spy business it is. Stickly speaking, only spying on GM's competion of course! I think she likes my equipment, err my friends camera equipment. In this economy it would be nice to have another income too. However I have been thinking I would be more suited working as a condom model. So what's your opinion on my current state of affairs? Inquiring minds want to know???

If you've cut back due to this economy, what have you done? Me? Went from a 3 vehicle household to a 1 vehicle household. Became a massive coupon clipper. Began regularly baking my own bread. Doesn't save me a lot of dough (har har) but it's enjoyable, relaxing, and my bread is way better than what you can buy at most stores. If I don't need it in the next 7 days, I don't buy it. Funny thing is, I don't even need to cut back. My income has actually increased over the past 12-18 months. I just enjoy the challenge and my savings is looking great because of it.

Hi, Cheers and Gears - We're making a movie about the history of Chevrolet, and the people that love bowties. If you or anyone you know is a Chevy-head, please write to us. We're looking for your stories and photos (What was your first car? Why do you love your Chevy?). Please ask any car history buffs to write us. You know the kind - the ones who will talk all night about how things like gas crisises and the Space Race gave us futuristic cars with smaller engines Our email is [email protected]. Thank you!

SEMA Action Network is a non-profit organization that works to promote legislative solutions for classic car owners and members of the hobby. If you are a part of the hobby or just enjoy preserving this part of our history, you should take part and join. It's free and it merely updates you on laws/propositions that either promote or threaten the hobby. I recently agreed to take the SEMA SAN Challenge to try and win the trip to this year's SEMA show. If you join, kindly put my name (Josh Leatherwood) under the "How Did You Hear About Us?" question. My true loyalty lies in passion for the hobby. So even if you don't like me and don't want to put down my name (which, I don…

Yes my new 2011 2SS, RS Synergy Green Camaro arrives on 3/30/11. I will have a special Pink/Purple Delaware license plate on it, because well, I'm just too special for blue and gold ... So if you see said Camaro with said plate, stop and say hi ... Pics may be a little late, since I'm having surgery on April 1st, and no that is not an April Fool's joke

do you ever get where you can't stop missing someone you know / knew.....miss them greatly....but they are not the one who you are with, or not the one you are supposed to be with? sometimes you just can't shake someone. even if you already have it good / better / the best. anyone else got one of those? can't exorcise them from your mind / gut no matter how hard you try?

Saint Patrick didn't have a decent car, so he moped around with his head hanging down. That's when he spotted a four leaf clover and his luck changed. He got a great deal on a Clover Green Holden Cruze v. 2 while he was on tour in Australia, and the rest is history. SRSLY. March yourself right in here and post your lucky little pots o' gold.

My bike has been hanging in my garage since I moved to PA in 2003... unused. It's a Wal-Mart special (shows how old it is, I have boycotted Wal-Mart for years, I think I bought it circa 1998) Pacific Strike 21 speed. It has never been left out in the weather, so it's in great shape. Tires hold air, don't appear too dry or cracked. Butt, it's too high off the ground, and I don't need that many gears. I want to get back into bike riding again, but this time around I am interested in a relaxed riding position and only 3 speeds... a comfort bike that can take on moderate hills. Anyone have any exPIRRience or recommendations? TIA.

Went to the local pick and pull with my son, Joel and his friend to get a few minor parts for friend's Nissan. In the yard... Porsche 944, clean, in the re-builder section, fairly minor left side damage...but hurt just enough I wouldn't want it. CRX, rebuild able, but in the parts section. 1959 Chevy 4 door post, rusty rocker panels but all there and fairly straight, faded original paint (red) they wanted $1400 for the whole car... Red Cavi Z24 ragtop, parked with the top down, kind O sad... A Miata...first time I've seen a Miata in pick and pull... a 66 GMC 1 ton 2WD long bed, looked like it had been carefully restored a long time ago and then started a long slow …

I swung by the Kia dealer to take a peak at that new Optima they got. In a word, I was impressed. I'm still wary of the reliability and mechanical bits, but the styling is striking and the interior design and materials are on par with the competition. I didn't test drive it because I'm going to wait til late April to compare it to the new '12 Civic Si sedan and others, but I sat in it and examined the interior material choices. It's definitely on my test drive list now. Must be that new Audi lead designer they nabbed. My main gripe is that the 6MT is ONLY available on the base model with no options or packages (par for the course with these midsize sedans). But on the b…

I am digging on the style of the '63 1/2 Falcon Futura Scatback... so sleek, small and lithe with that low body and rakish roofline. For a brief period of time... the '64 Falcon was more boxy, not as sexy as this little baby... <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/yvqUn6xS_lM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I thought we had a thread on this, but apparently not. Ok, its Saturday night, you're pretty well smashed, the bar has karaoke. What song do you do? For me its Bad Romance or Party in the U.S.A. For some reason I rock those in the most awkward way. Last time the wife got brave and we did My Humps. Well, I rocked the will.i.am parts while she drunkenly stumbled through Fergie's lines.

Makes me so angry. :rage: Had a look under the cars the other day. First and foremost, the Prizm. After only four years in NE, winter is taking its toll. The good news is that it looks like the rust is confined to those areas of the rockers and no where else important. Hopefully this year I'll be able to get that fixed (along with the rear quarter). My car only saw a few storms before going into storage. Under body looks pretty good despite living its 204,000 life up here. I would like to take care of what rust is forming though before it gets worse.

Talk about a blast from the past, I saw an old Saturn the other day with those stupid automatic seat belts. They still worked too, I watched the guy get out of the car because I'm a creep like that. Or I was in awe. I hated those things in moms old Saturn, so glad they're gone.

Inspired by the top 3 rock n' roll songs thread, list 5 to 10 (or whatever you feel like) rock songs that get on your nerves. They may not necessarily be bad songs, just overplayed and overhyped. BTO - Takin' Care of Business Aerosmith - Dude Looks Like a Lady (I like Aerosmith...but I hate this song) Steppenwolf - Born to Be Wild AC/DC - Back in Black Black Sabbath - Iron Man Ozzy - Crazy Train Metallica - Enter Sandman Jane's Addiction - Jane Says Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again The only two I can't stand are Takin' Care of Business and Dude Looks Like a Lady, but I get really tired of hearing all of them on the radio.

Linky On the outside, an unassuming 2002 Ford Focus station wagon, albiet with SVT rims: But pop the hood, and reel back in shock as you're greeted by a 4.6L quad-cam Cobra motor: But it doesn't end there. It's been converted to RWD with a 5-speed transmission, 8.8:1 rear end, and coilovers: And, just as a strange aside, I thought it was funny that the title-holder lives in "$h!tier," CA : It doesn't run, and still needs some electrical and other work done (not to mention oil) to get it there, but basically all the components are in place, and it's almost ready to run. I'd love to know just how much power it makes as well. The sleeper poten…

I'm trying to type this with my left hand since my right wrist is imobilized. Made a rare trip to see a doctor today to confirm the bad news I already thought was coming my way. Right now, I can't do any of the things I usually do to make a living and am supposed to start some harsh physical therapy after "resting" my arm for several weeks. This is not in the budget. Worse, it is spring and my best chance to generate some decent level of income just evaporated. Sometimes things just suck. Sorry for not getting back to you, Olds. Been a bit fixated on this.

What soundcard would you recommend for a 5.1 channel system? It does not matter whether it is PCI or PCI-E. I have read good reviews about Asus Xonar Essence XTX. but also have read that it is geared for headphones and some have experienced problems with 5.1 digital sound. Can a 5.1 channel system be "converted" to a 7.1 by adding two speakers?
