We had to euthanize our 14 yr old Australian Terrier, Nauti (aka Bitey Beast) this morning after a long battle w/ cancer. I really bonded w/ this feisty little dog and will miss her deeply. Poured a stiff glass of Jameson to have a toast to her.

* ...Probably because I prefer NOT to think about "doomsday", despite the circumstances in which I find myself now. I suppose, though, this would've been one way to get back on the radio.... I'm trying to retain my positive/fighting outlook/attitude, but having to sell my cars at the start of the summer (i.e. cruising, gathering, road tripping) season is a bit much ... perhaps more so than having OHS. I can't imagine no longer owning cars that have been part of my life for so long now, let alone not being part of many MC forums. It's been quite a ride (pun intended) meeting many people, attending shows/gatherings/cruises, etc. Looking through my road trip pics &am…

The year is 1957. You've just been promoted to Senior Adviser to the Assistant Vice Deputy General Secretary at the National Center for the Association of Institutes. Your new job requires a lot of travel and the need to impress people once you get there. Your current car is looking a bit dilapidated and isn't up to the task. Since the company is willing to pay the cost of a chauffeur, you decide a large four door luxury car is what you need. The only question is, which one? 1957 Cadillac Series 70 Eldorado 1957 Lincoln Premiere 1957 Imperial Crown 1957 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud 1957 Bentley S1 1957 Mercedes 300 1957 Jaguar Mk VIII 1957 BMW 501

* The English language is a curious thing. Everyday phrases, when written out, are redundant: "PIN number" ... as in "Personal Identification Number Number" "ATM machine" ... as in "Automated Teller Machine Machine" "VIN number" ... as in "Vehicle Identification Number Number" "HAZ-MAT material" ... as in "Hazardous Material Material" "UPC code" ... as in "Universal Product Code Code" "Hot water heater" ... so, you heat hot water? "free gift" ... thought all "gifts" were "free? Apparently not! Interesting sentences: "A calendar's days are numbered." "A committee is a group that keeps minutes & loses hours." Against owners will.... http://www.telegram.com/article/2012...106219803/1116 WORCESTER — As David vs. Goliath struggles go, they don't get much more lopsided than a lone muscle-car enthusiast going up against a mega-bank with more than $2 trillion in assets. But that's exactly what Aaron Dahrooge of Worcester has been doing for three months now in an effort to get back his beloved 1973 Dodge Challenger. The distinctive muscle car, which is painted “plum crazy” purple and has a burly V-8 engine with a chrome air scoop popping up through the hood, was taken from the garage of his deceased mother's home in Burncoat in late March. Bank of America has vital information, …

RE the recent '66 Impala discussion.... these seats recently sold on eBay. They were from a '61 Starfire, but (pattern aside) are correct for '59-60 also (of note; they have full metal backs). There were 5 pics, but you absolutely get the picture of their condition. No tricks. Without checking the link / eBay, what would you guess a pair of '59-61 GM buckets, in complete but worn shape, would go for?

First off, apologies to caddycruiser and regfootball. Earning a living can be difficult at times, I know... I stopped @ the local Ford dealership this afternoon to check out a new Escape, it was an SE AWD 1.6, priced at $27k. Usually this dealership lets ppl browse, but today a salesguy came out and started pitching. He said "yeah, how do you like it?" I said, "Yup, the new Focus wagon," and so the tone was set. He said with the automatic liftgate, Ford is cautioning ppl against waving your leg back and forth to open it because you can fall down. Just one kick straight ahead is the preferred way to do it. I asked if there will be a warning label to avoid lawsuits.…

When I owned my '07 Saturn SKY, it was involved in an accident in November. The tire and rim were cosmetically damaged and were replaced during the repairs. I kept the original tire & rim and now want to sell them to raise some needed cash. The tire saw 495 miles as of the accident, and very little additional mileage until it was replaced. It has held air with no problems the 6 years its been in storage in my basement. Here are some recent pictures: Honestly, what do you think I could sell the tire & rim for? I was thinking $250, but not sure if that is too high or too low?

Here's the deal: My employers/landlords have a 2000 Volvo V40 wagon. About a week ago, I found a broken hunk of a front spring under the car and told them to have their mechanic check it out since I consider it a safety issue. I dropped the car off and had a chat about it with the mechanic. I agreed with him that the proper way to deal with it was to replace the front springs and struts (original and at about 90k miles). No big deal, I thought - standard wear stuff. Wrong. I should have known something was up when I asked the mechanic for a ballpark on the pricing and he came back with a number twice what I expected: $1,500. The first issue is that everything is a s…

Interesting article in car and driver... http://blog.caranddriver.com/why-honda-is-in-even-more-trouble-than-you-think-deep-thoughts/ To many observers, Honda appears to be going through the corporate equivalent of a mid-life crisis. Supply problems from the effects of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and flooding in Thailand, along with less-than-complimentary write-ups on the new Civic by Car and Driver, Consumer Reports, and others, are bearing the brunt of the blame for the slump in calendar-year 2011 sales. Further issues: Acura’s inability to attain tier-one luxury-car consideration or status among consumers, Honda’s attempt to build a pickup truck, and the fir…

Seat-belt your dog or face $1000 fine We know...it sounds absurd. "Click-it-or-ticket" warns us that we can, and will, get caught if we drive without a seatbelt. Most if not all states have now made it a primary offense under pressure from the Federal Government. But one state wants to extend the "click" to man's best friend riding in the passenger seat and sticking his head out the window. Under New Jersey Statute 4:22-18, unrestrained pets in vehicles is an act of animal cruelty, and drivers who don’t secure their pooch in a pet seat belt will be subject to fines, ranging from $250 to $1,000 and as much as six months in jail. "That’s for each offense,” Col. Frank …

I bought something. Can't really explain why and not sure what the heck I'll do with it or how long it will be around. Busy day. Cash. Thought I'd try that for once, and old. But shockingly well cared for. To the extent the lady I bought it from typed and printed out an emotional "car history" story about it, in addition to the stacks of service bills. She was interesting. 199,575 miles as of today, parked outside under a tree until I get in trouble for having 2 cars in my development. Vroom. Now, what the heck am I going to do with this thing. Aye.

Well, I’ve had a busy last few weeks and you’ve probably noticed I haven’t been posting new news or regular commentary around here. Let’s get to the big news first. As of May 22nd, 2012 I am officially a Journalism major with an undetermined minor concentration. That means, in due time, all of the Moorish creases in my writing will be ironed out and the burrs filed down. It also means I’ll be an intern at some newspaper or magazine, possibly even a television station within two years time — that’s a requirement to graduate. It’s been unnecessarily difficult getting to this point and it’s required a lot of sacrifice, so hopefully it’ll be worth it. Also, a few days pri…

Well yeah, since finding out shock-n-awe style on May 15th that the bodyshop I work at would be closed by the end of the munt due to a multi-year drop-off in business (yes, that was today, our last day) despite a golden local reputation that was built over nearly 5 decades, all my staff have been clearly in emotional turmoil. Some have worn it on their sleeves while others have appeared to be resigned (bad word) to the fact almost from the minute of the announcement. Some wished the axe had dropped immediately and more mercifully, instead of two weeks of torture as we choked off our insurance company contracts and watched our business drop to near zero by the end, while…

I've probably met the most interesting person I'm going to meet while working at a parts store. Yesterday a gentleman came in to pick up an Optima battery he had ordered. He brought the core with him, a battery sold by us 6 years ago. Generally, a battery that old is not the prettiest thing. They range from dirty to downright scary. This one wasn't though, it looked practically new. I happened to comment on it and he told me its because it came out of a DeLorean. I like DMC 12s, so I asked him a bit about it. As it turns out, Patrick Shea and his father own not one, but three of them. One of them is a restored DeLorean, another was restored and converted into an accurat…

For the last two years the Sauber F1 Team mechanics have been using their downtime to slice a Formula One racing car lengthwise down the middle with the precision of true craftsmen. Chief Designer Matt Morris quite literally gets underneath the skin of the F1 car, pointing out where and how the individual components are located within the chassis. Everything is packed in pretty tightly. Sergio Pérez is also on hand to demonstrate the driver's seating position.

As of today, we are now a GM-only household. Sold my 2004 Neon SXT this morning and we're down to one car, the Malibu Maxx. This is the first time I've been without a Mopar in the garage since Nixon was president. I'm serious! My wife got a new job where she is able to commute via bus and I've been commuting via bus for a long time. Our high-school daughter gets to/from school via the bus as well and she won't be able to drive, unless some advanced surgery comes along to fix her eyesight (she's legally blind). We decided we don't need two cars and my wife didn't like driving the Neon (she claims she sat too low in it). Wow...we only have one car--and it's a GM!

Sparked by the (hideous) Chevy Spark, there was an interesting chat session yesterday where a bunch of pics of unusual, little cars were tossed up. These are NOT my preference in vehicles, so in a way, I'm looking at these in order to find something I like design-wise. Bill Mitchell once said (...something derogatory about small cars, can't find the quote). Anyway, the Gub'mnt seems determined to get each & every one of us into one of these at some point, so maybe I can adapt to the idea if the design works for me (then again, I'd rather drive a '60 Fury). Gonna start off with one of Swordfish's favored models, the very very first saab from 1946, 92001: From this …

This weekend, my wife & I had planned a trip to Yellowstone, but the weather turned crappy. So last minute we picked out a destination to the south for better weather, and went to the Great Basin National Park. Beautiful hiking & caves, good times. Drove partway home yesterday & spent the night at Windover, and soon learned it's on the edge of the Utah Salt Flats. This morning we popped by the Bonneville Speedway, where all the racing happens on the salt flats. I didn't know what to expect, but I figured there would be at least some kind of dragstrip-esque buildings. Nope, nothing. No one was out racing either, unfortunately, but there were some folks a…

The shop I work at will close on May 30th permanently after many decades in business and an excellent reputation earned well before I was born, due to lack of business. I was just promoted to co-manager in February. We were all caught off-guard. Not sure what to do next, I've called several people I know in the business to put out feelers. Hopefully something will come my way soon. When I first started there in 2006, there were 14 bodyshop employees. We're ending up with 9.

Or try to run your lawn mower using seawater. It's the only explanation I can come up with for what you're about to see. For reference, this is what a Tecumseh what a typical carburetor looks like: This is a carburetor I worked on last week. The gas in it was sold old it had evaporated and left corrosive, nasty varnish. This was the worst carburetor I've worked on. And then this came along. All I could say was: The customer had bought it last year from me. At the time the carburetor was in the the condition of the firs image. Perfectly fine. He told me at some point last year he had to hold the governor to get it to start and then it eventually woul…

My pics of what I no longer see on the road: 1. Buick Riviera. Yeah, I know I'm the small car fan here at C&G but for some reason I've always lusted after the Riv. Almost bought a silver 65 with dual 4v carbs when I bought the 66 Mustang fastback. Used to be several running around my old home town. I also miss the later 60's design and the sweet 70's boat tail design. Actually, I seldom see the sleek 90's version on the road either. 2. Olds Cutlass Vista Cruiser. When we were talking about the what year thing I thought about how many of these there were running around when I was a kid. Still lust after them, and if I could have GM build me anything from …

http://www.youtube.com/embed/uo0dpeQqXUg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen> Yes, you read that correctly. The BBC's globally approved automotive entertainment program Top Gear will not be making a return in 2012. Word came from Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson himself, saying on a South African radio show last week that the Top Gear Festival 2012 would "be the only time" when he and other presenters Richard Hammond and James May would be working together this year. Clarkson would later confirm the news on his Twitter account, adding that Top Gear would return in January 2013 and a full Christmas special would debut before then. So, why has the BBC pushed on…

For those who are not aware, the Cummins 4BT the same engine as what's found under the hood Ram pickups, but with two cylinders lopped off. Many people like to swap them into their full sized vehicles because they can net you over 20 MPG, like these guys: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=392580 http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forum/general-discussion/duramax-forum/engine-swaps/374390-4bt-cummins-turbo-diesel-05-silverado-pictures.html So I was thinking, what if instead of the six cylinders usually used for base engines in full sized trucks, GM were to use something like this? They already have the 4JJ1 4 cylinder diesel in the Holden Colorado and peopl…

Chronicling the Death of a Car Have you ever stopped and thought about what a car goes through at the end of its life? It's a very sad and to be honest very brutal fate that awaits a vehicle that provided its owners years of service, usually asking little in return. To most people a car is nothing more than an appliance, something that is merely cast away like an cell phone. To car enthusiasts however, who think of a car as more than the sum of its parts, a machine which can have passion and soul, and something that is part of your family, the following may be difficult to read. Car and Driver recently sent a tired, old BMW 325i to meet it fate, likening the wrecker t…

I'm a member of an Australian automotive forum. It's nothing like Cheers&Gears ... more like a cross between Cheers&Gears and the /b/ area of 4chan. Anyhow, a while back one of the members spotted a really ugly Ford Taurus with a home-made wide body kit on eBay, and we knew that for the sake of society, this vehicle had to be obliterated. We took donations from the forum members, and bought the car with the specific intent of destroying it. There were many plans for a spectacular destruction, including one that involved a serious amount of explosives, but one by one these plans became non-events when all the "nanny state" regulations, paperwork, insurance, and o…

For some reason, I've been eying the old Opel GT lately. There's something about the thought of an uncommon vintage mini-Vette that just leaps out and grabs me. Of course, eyeballing gives way to Craigslisting the hell out of a 200 mile radius of your area and, as my luck would have it, I found a drivable example somewhere in Nashville. Did you click the link? Okay, okay. I already know what you're thinking. Yeah, the impromptu camo paintjob was more than likely done by someone at some point in the little Opel's lifetime with a few too many rattle cans of paint, a few too many cans of Coors, but far fewer bright ideas. Yes, it has its share of dents and dings and minor s…

*grins devilishly* ...I have a second opportunity! Yep, my nephew will have his first sibling in a few months. Wonder if his sibling will be into cars, too...? I have thoroughly enjoyed my role as uncle & am looking forward to being an uncle again. My "corrupting skills", originally developed for friends' kids, have sharpened with my nephew these last 3+ years. Still don't know why kids like me so much.... YES bored. Pricing out fullsize, 2WD, shortbed, regular cab base model trucks that are optioned out as nicely and evenly as I could. Big V8s, posi-traction rears, power windows/locks/mirrors and chrome bumper packages across the board. Edmunds' "True Market Value" pricing (typical dealer discount plus rebate) comes out like this: Ram Tradesman: $21,872 in True Blue with stone cloth bench Silverado W/T LS: $23,900 in resurrected Imperial Blue with gray vinyl bench Sierra W/T Plus: $24,042, same colour scheme as Silvy F150 XL Plus: $25,101 in Green Gem with gray cloth bench imo... good grief, the Ram is a screaming deal! For me at least, Cheers and Gears has always been a reader/user-oriented site, a place where everyone is involved in someway. So, since I know I'm taking my affinity for automotive journalism as something that could become a loving, paying career someday in the near future, I'd like to know how much automotive journalism matters to one person: you. What you would like to see different? What do you like about what automotive journalists are currently up to? Personally, I think automotive journalism has its place and I can think of ways it can evolve and progress, but this isn't about what I think. This is about what you think. As for why I decided to open this topic up f…

In case you missed it, this past Saturday (April 21) was Record Store Day. I hope you visited your local (read: non-chain) record store and perused their selection of new and used records (or CDs, if you must). Anything to enhance your music collection and spur the local economy. Saturday afternoon, I added my two-cents (or $20, I forget) picking up a few vinyl treasures and I can't wait for a moment alone in my house to listen to George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can't Say on TV" from the "Class Clown" record. Last fall, my buddy and I took out love of records to another level. In one fourteen-hour period, we traveled through three states and visited six records stores, …

We're organizing a casual gathering of cars and car people...and looking for interesting cars and even more interesting people. This is a morning cruise-in type event Saturday May 5 at Michael's Resturaunt in Douglassville, PA (right on Rt 422 between Pottstown and Reading). Michael's is NOT sponsoring the event but has allowed us to use their parking lot (so buy a cup of coffee or have breakfast with us). There's no charge for the event as it's very casual. It's primiarily organized by the Delaware Valley Region of the Classic Car Club of America (with help from the region's Cadillac-LaSalle Club), but we're open to anyone and everyone. Bring something interesting...brin…
