I'll be brief, but think a topic with a list of links that can assist someone with determining their vehicle's impact on the environment would be valuable to the members here. I know several have been mentioned and linked to in the past... some better than others. If you'd like, please post them here. My personal reasoning behind this is a Bill that's been proposed to Washington State Legislation - SB 6900 - 2007-08. I suspect other states will be introducing something similar over time... It will add to the annual vehicle registration the following fees: Vehicle%20Engine%20Displacement%20Fee%20" target="_blank">Vehicle Engine Displacement Fee Vehicle%20…

Linkity Virgin Puts Biofuels On Maiden Voyage February 26, 2008; Page D1 Ever a showman, Virgin Atlantic Airlines President Richard Branson opened a vial of jet fuel made with oil from coconuts and Brazilian babassu nuts and drank it, forcing a stiff smile. "It's more appropriate for the engine," he said before TV cameras. Later, he said privately that he had been told he could drink it, "but my god, it was horrible." Sir Richard hopes that he and airline passengers will have a much better taste for "biofuel" in a few years. On Sunday, Virgin flew a Boeing 747 from London's Heathrow Airport to Amsterdam with one of the four engines burning a…

Super Soaker Inventor Aims to Cut Solar Costs in Half Twice the thermal efficiency of the most efficient solar sterling engines and almost 3 times the efficiency of photovoltaics. It also doesn't require light to operate, just heat. Meaning anywhere you have waste heat you can collect that heat and turn it into electricity with his invention. It uses hydrogen, but in a closed system so that hydrogen refueling is not necessary. Imagine: A Chevy Volt with an E-85 two cylinder that charges the batteries not only with rotational energy, but also the waste heat energy from the combustion process. The combined thermal efficiency would be unprecedented. Though the pane…

Note to Mods: Not sure if this is the appropriate forum, since this isn't news of any sort. If you deem it necessary, please feel free to move it to a more appropriate location. Wind is the enemy of vehicle propulsion. Vehicle manufacturers have spent millions, if not billions of dollars trying to minimize the coefficient of drag in their automobiles. It is said that as much as 60% of the power required to cruise at highway speeds is simply to overcome wind resistance. An automobile's coefficient of drag drastically affects fuel economy. One way auto manufacturers have used to reduce the amount of fuel required to overcome wind resistance is assistance from one…

Battery-like Device Could Power Cars By Grant Slater, Associated Press posted: 07 September 2007 12:59 pm ET AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Millions of inventions pass quietly through the U.S. patent office each year. Patent No. 7,033,406 did, too, until energy insiders spotted six words in the filing that sounded like a death knell for the internal combustion engine. An Austin-based startup called EEStor promised "technologies for replacement of electrochemical batteries,'' meaning a motorist could plug in a car for five minutes and drive 500 miles roundtrip between Dallas and Houston without gasoline.
