Ask Me About: 2019 Buick Regal GS

The Buick Regal GS has come in a for a weeklong test. If you have questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

As I'm writing this, Michigan along with various other states is under the grasp of a polar vortex. It is currently -6' F (the wind chill drops that to -29' F). I was keen on getting the driver who was dropping off my next test vehicle into the Silverado quickly so he could warm up.

That vehicle is the 2019 Buick Regal GS. As much I would have loved to get my hands on the new TourX, I have a bit more experience with the GS. In 2015, I spent a week in the previous Regal GS and came away quite impressed. The turbo-four, all-wheel drive system, and suspension made for a surprisingly taut sedan. This new one (introduced in 2017) gave me a bit of pause as it would swap the four-cylinder for the 3.6L NA V6. This engine has not been a favorite of mine as you have really to bury your foot to get the most of it.

In the case of my tester, it happens to be brand spanking new with less than 400 miles on the odometer. Base is $39,070 and with a few options comes to $43,115. My first impressions?

    • I tend not to be a fan of red on vehicles, but the Regal GS pulls it off. The wide, long fastback shape wears this color quite well. Also, the wheels on this are quite sharp.
    • The seats are quite snug for me, mostly due to wide shoulders. There appears to be some adjustable bolstering and I'll see that helps.
    • WHY IS THERE NO OFF BUTTON FOR THE STOP-START SYSTEM BUICK?! Though the current weather kind of acts like an off switch.
    • The AWD system is biased towards the front as some experimentation in a snowy parking lot. I'm able to get the back step out provided I get a bit of throttle.

I'll have some more updates and a small gallery in the next few days. If you have questions, be sure to drop them below and I'll do my best to answer them. Also, I will have a final update on the Silverado sometime tomorrow.

Are you drunk? You are the one who invited me to this site years ago when most of us here were on the MT forums.

For the record, the crazy talk started with you and it still continues. You also don’t understand the concept of a “joke”. Stop it BUB. Just stop it. This is about the GS and not about your delicate sensibilities where criticisms of GM are concerned.

    ?????

Its really not. I just don't like car payments.. same as U apparently. And the whole not knowing who U were and calling U "pet names" was my just joking with U Kitty Kat ??

Look I went all out and explained my point of view on the Regal GS. I love the car's handling, looks, and interior.. just think  the engine could be more powerful. As a daily driver it would certainly suffice. Possibly more so than even my Impala, which is fast on its own with an earlier version of the 3.6L. In a smaller car.. hell in the Camaro RS.. it works.. is a quick lil whip.. but I just think that if the GS is the TOP.. the TOP performance vehicle in the Buick line it should be afforded the TT3.6L.

The Kia is not my thing. I find it weird looking, derivative, its a Hyundai, which I hate almost as much as Toyota, if not equally.. and if I wanted a NEW RWD Sedan for almost $40K I'd just go get a Charger RT.. if NEW wasn't a necessity.. I'd go get a used '14-16 CTS-VSport.. a used '16-17 Chevy SS.. a used '13 CTS-V.. So many options.

Seriously.. as good as the 3.6L is as a goto engine.. it should not be in anything that is billed as a performance or luxury vehicle when they have better alternatives that would blow the competition away. This is a another prime place where the now defunct XTS VSport's TT 3.6L LF3 would shine.

The LF3 -- the last of the LF-series motors -- is going out to be phased out of production with the sunset of the CTS. GM is not going to put it in anything new. The Regal GS could have used the 3.0L TT 404bhp / 400 lb-ft (LGW) engine instead of the 3.6L NA (LGX) though. Or, if they wanted to keep it "cheap" it could have had the 2.7L 4-cylinder Turbo from the Silverado which makes 310 bhp / 348 lb-ft.

    Just a thought...

Put in a 2.7T tuned to 410~420 hp and 380~420 lb-ft and they can call it the Regal GNX.

i like the idea.  using the 4 pot instead of the 3.0tt v6 would help keep weight in check.  And with the 2.7, the issue would be how smooth it would be in a passenger car iteration vs. truck.  Obviously if it's going into the CT4-V Cadillac figures it will have good operating characteristics.  So assuming that, why not put it in the Regal GS at least.  Traditionalists will balk at calling it a GNX.

Vibration wise it is a balance shafted four so it's not going to shake. But, 420 hp from 2/3 as many firing pulses is going to sound a little coarser than from a V6. Still, because twin turbo V6es inherently sucks from a tiurbo response standpoint compared to an single turbo Inline-4 (due to the interrupted exhaust pulses of three cylinders feeding a turbo) an Inline-4 will be more responsive and come on boost sooner.

when i drove the silverado with the 2.7, i thought it was pretty smooth.  in a higher tune, not sure, but i do understand what you say on the advantage of a turbo4 vs a turbo6 and the boost.  pretty frustrating reading the new reviews of the VW Arteon.  It bills the Arteon as a upscale option that is not expensive like the A7.  Never in any of these articles hardly does it mention the Regal GS as competition.  It mentions the Maxima etc.

The 2.7t and a good chassis tuning would turn the Regal Sportback into something they might mention in those articles.  Problem is GM gave up on the car.

A higher state of tune generally will not affect the NVH unless you put in a stupid muffler to make extra noise. What it will do is give up on a bit of the bottom end turbo spool. Instead of hitting 348 lb-ft @ 1,500 rpm. It'll probably hit 348 lb-ft @ ~1,800 rpm on the way to 420 lb-ft @ 2,200 rpm. The plus side being that instead of holding that 348 lb-ft torque peak only till 4,000 rpm. You hold a higher torque plateau of 420 lb-ft through 5,200 rpm. This gets you over 100 more horsepower.

    • https://www.thewrap.com/the-view-ana-navarro-begs-canada-to-become-51st-state/   The hosts of “The View” may think Donald Trump’s endeavor to make Canada the 51st state is an absurd one, but realizing how Canada’s politics actually lean, Ana Navarro is begging them to just “take one for the team.”     “It’s larger than the state of California. So if you imported 40 million Canadians, and made them the 51st state, it would be democratic rule for the next 20 years,” Farah Griffin added. Looking at those numbers, Navarro put out her request to Canadians. “Canada, take one for the team!” she begged. “Please, people, save us!”   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is why I refuse to be muzzled on topics of politics.  We want to run away from the political climate. We cant.  Too many Americans view politics as a nuissance. At best. At worst, its taboo. Too many are uneducated. Too many make decisions that affect the whole damned country in a very negative way. Take the article I just linked above.  Is it a phoquing joke to you that we are talking about the phoquing sovereignty of another nation?  It is NOT a phoquing joke.  And when a political leader threatens another country the way Trump has in regards to Greenland and Denmark and Canada, It is is a LITERAL declaration of war!!!  It is a LITERAL act of war!!!  It is NOT a joke.  And in fact, the way Trump has acted in the face of Canada (and Greenland), it desensitizes the American people and it facilitates any aggression towards Canada or Greenland. And by too many Americans regarding politics as a nuissance or taboo, or basically garbage even in an automotive forum, it renders too many voting Americans stupid and uncapable of actually making the right and necessary decisions to protect themsleves from nefarious individuals.  And THAT has made it a phoquing problem for ALL Canadians and Greenlanders...   Let alone for the rest of the good natured Americans who are stuck living this nightmare.    “Canada, take one for the team!” she begged. “Please, people, save us!”   Save you own selves you lazy pieces of shyte!!!  Learn to be political. Stay educated, informed and fix your own phoquing problems...and stop making it a problem for us Canadians.  And Greenlanders.   You think this is a joke? THIS is what Canadians think about the USA now. This was a speech yesterday BEFORE today's talks about it being a good call.  It was right after the Signal app message text war/fight information scandal (for phoques sake...become political and get this President out of office!!!), right after Trump's tariffs on Canadian built cars to draw attentiion to tariffs rather than yet another phoquing illegal scandal...   THIS is what Trump has has made out of Canada's relationship with the US.  THIS is how we Canadians are feeling.   And THIS is why I REFUSE to be muzzled.  Maybe for you American phoques to wake the phoque up.  Too lazy to be political. To stupid to be political.  To mis and dis informed that Fox news, and all other media outlets are phoquing LYING to you.  Are making a mockery out of you and your democracy.   Wake the phoque up and trust me, Ill help you wake the phoque up!!!  Too phqouing bad if you have to read this in an automotive forum.  You have to read it somewhere.  Ill force feed it to you. I did promise I wont be toxic.  But how the phoque do you think I feel as an Canadian when an American journalistic personality is MINIMIZING MY phoquing identity as a CANADIAN to help you phoquing fix your shytty phoquing laziness and stupidity!!! Dont undermine MY sovereignty.    WAKE THE PHOQUE UP AND FIGHT FOR YOUR OWN GOD DAMNED FREEDOMS BECAUSE YOUR OWN PHOQUING STUPIDITIES ARE THREATENING MY GOD DAMNED FREEDOMS!!!
    • Yep, BYD (and other Chinese brands) will take over Asia, Mexico, South America, etc were they need lower priced cars and they are making some inroads to Europe also.  And at the improvement rate of Chinese cars with all these 1,000+ hp, 400 mile range, charge in 5 minutes they will move into luxury and performance segments.  Which forces legacy auto into the middle and upper market in the US and Europe and I don't know if that is enough volume for them to survive, probably half will die after getting beat up by tariffs when BYD swoops in to pick up the pieces.
    • Yup. If BYD's battery system tech is true with 100% charging in 5 minutes.   Pretty much everybody is toast. And it does not matter if the US and Canada tariff the crap out of BYD and Chinese EVs from their respective markets.  BYD is already in the process of flooding their EVs all OVER the planet.  Including Mexico.   And if Trump pisses off Canada even more with tariffs, forget about Canada banning Tesla from the Canadian market in retaliation, Canada might just  erase the 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs and will let   BYD flood our market too.   If GM  and FoMoCo Ontario plants close, BYD might be welcomed to use them.  China last week or two punished us with 100% tariffs on our porc and other food products that we sell to them.  Retaliatory. (where have  I heard that word before?)  Chinese importers will simply buy porc from other countries hurting our industry... If American tariffs on GM of Canada vehicles and FoMoCo Canada vehicles is still a go, our factories might close, but maybe if we let BYD flood our market, it will hurt GM and FoMoCo THAT much more.  And it doesnt matter actually, Trump's economic war with ALL of its allies will doom GM and FoMoCo anyway.
    • Ive thought about it.  And there are literally no luxury sedans (the big ones) in this modern era of the 2020s (and to be more precise to use 2025) that I currently lust for.   Nothing from Bentley or Rolls Royce.  Nothing from Mercedes or BMW.  The Audi A8?  I dont like it.  I like the medium version of the A8. The A6.  Precisely, the RS6 Avant.   This.     Americans dont do sedans anymore.  OK...Cadillac has got the CT5.  But it aint a big cruiser sedan.  I do like the Black Wing V Series.   I dont lust after it anymore.  I got over it.
