Rumorpile: Volkswagen Adding A Smaller CC

Volkswagen is thinking about adding a smaller four-door coupe (See Volkswagen CC) to their lineup. There are two reasons for this. One, this would be a vilable alternative to the new Audi A3 sedan and upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLC. Two, this will provide Volkswagen another way to increase its market share in North America and China.

Known internally as the SC (Sport Coupe), the vehicle was given approval after U.S. market studies revealed that Volkswagen's earlier plans for a two-door version of the Jetta (see NCC from the 2010 NAIAS) got only a lukewarm response from potential customers.

“Our research suggests there is increasingly a market for a sportier and more stylish version of the Jetta in the mold of the CC, only smaller and more affordable. From the feedback we've received so far, buyers want an individual body style and the practicality of four doors.” a Volkswagen source told Autoweek.

The SC will use Volkswagen’s new MQB platform and will become part of the Jetta lineup.

The SC will come out sometime in 2015

    • I can't imagine there is much of a market in the US for a $100k KN EV van...I know there is the whole 'van life' thing, but that is a small group of 'lifestyle influencer' wankers on TikTok/YouTube, etc.  At least the VW ID Buzz has the brand history and heritage going for it.
    • I’ll find Jimmy Hoffa before you find a successful “lifestyle” van market in this country and I am a van fan from way back. However, like station wagons, that is beyond a tough sell in this country. At least VW had the good sense to give theirs hope by giving it some style. All the great tech in the world doesn’t change that fact for the Kia. Again, that thing is hideous regardless of the lifestyle choice lol.
    • @surreal1272 You are right that style is personal, but if you look at the full picture, a 400V slow ID-Buzz versus 800V versatile van, Kia is winning here imho. I get the VW history But this is very appealing as a lifestyle Van also plus the superior tech.
    • So this is the presentation from last year at CES:  CES 2024 | Kia Global Brand Site | Movement that inspires Official Global site for the PVB: Kia PBV lineup | Kia Global Brand Site | Movement that inspires Then as SEMA they showed off the rugged offroad version which I covered here:
    • I have already been to Kia's website and understand its versatility. It will also, again, never make it here as a consumer level van if at all. Even if ti does, half of those "features" will disappear for the U.S., like how your Kia honest have the near 360 captains chairs in the 2nd row like they do in overseas markets. Lastly, you said it looks cooler, and while looks are truly subjective, I could poll 100 people and count on less the number of fingers on one hand and that would be the number folks would say the Kia looks better than the VW. That thing is hideous on the outside.
