Tesla Model 3 Production Has Some 'Bottlenecks'

Only has delivered on 220 Model 3s

Earlier this week, Tesla announced its quarterly production figures and the Model 3 is getting off to a slower start than expected.

In a statement, Tesla said that it had delivered a total of 26,150 vehicles in the third quarter. Here is how it breaks down,

    • Model S: 14,065 Units
    • Model X: 11,865 Units
    • Model 3: 220 Units

Only 260 Model 3s were built in the third quarter. Tesla said the reason for the small production of Model 3s was due to "production bottlenecks." The company didn't go into detail as what the bottleneck is. This isn't a good start as Tesla promised to build 5,000 Model 3s by the end of the year.

"It is important to emphasize that there are no fundamental issues with the Model 3 production or supply chain. We understand what needs to be fixed and we are confident of addressing the manufacturing bottleneck issues in the near-term," said Tesla.

Tesla Q3 2017 Vehicle Deliveries and Production

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 02, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In Q3, Tesla delivered 26,150 vehicles, of which 14,065 were Model S, 11,865 were Model X, and 220 were Model 3. This was our all-time best quarter for Model S and X deliveries, representing a 4.5% increase over Q3 2016, our previous best quarter, and a 17.7% increase over Q2 2017.

We had previously indicated that second half Model S and X deliveries would likely exceed first half deliveries of 47,077, but we now expect to exceed that by several thousand vehicles. In total, we expect to deliver about 100,000 Model S and X vehicles in 2017, which would be a 31% increase over 2016.

In addition to Q3 deliveries, about 4,820 Model S and X vehicles were in transit to customers at the end of the quarter. These will be counted as deliveries in Q4 2017.

Q3 production totaled 25,336 vehicles, with 260 of them being Model 3. Model 3 production was less than anticipated due to production bottlenecks. Although the vast majority of manufacturing subsystems at both our California car plant and our Nevada Gigafactory are able to operate at high rate, a handful have taken longer to activate than expected.

It is important to emphasize that there are no fundamental issues with the Model 3 production or supply chain. We understand what needs to be fixed and we are confident of addressing the manufacturing bottleneck issues in the near-term.

Our delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct. Final numbers could vary by up to 0.5%. Tesla vehicle deliveries represent only one measure of the company's financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results, which depend on a variety of factors, including the cost of sales, foreign exchange movements and mix of directly leased vehicles.

Musk Tweeted last night a delay in the Semi-truck of a few weeks to divert money to fixing the Tesla 3 mess since less than 260 cars have been produced and they were supposed to be up to 1500 a week by now.

Guess Musk should have talked to GM about EV Production. :P

I don't know what kind of jump you speak of but with all of the flooding in the past month some of that could effect that. Which is likely another reason the D3 did well last month as well.

Look at the average monthly range for the Model S & X, then look at September. Not sure what's going on there, but I don't see it being a sudden market demand... unless it's defectors from the troubled Model 3 launch ponying up.

Bolt has a steady, linear march upward, while Tesla has always been erratic. Production ability has to be a prime factor in that (with both OEMs).

WOW, Multiple stories that have Tesla having hand built a ton of parts to allow them to get the Tesla 3 into productions and now that major problems have shown up, Tesla is redirecting money to get the parts auto assembly built so they take the human error factor out.

Parts that will be replaced in ALL TESLA 3 models are as follows:

    Headlights

    Tail lights

    Front and Rear seats

    Battery Packs

The rest of the parts are smaller components according to company insiders as Tesla focuses on only delivering these prototype cars to the employees who will have to deal with numerous changes as production parts come online.

Seems the Gigawatt production line is also way behind in producing enough battery packs for the Tesla 3 as they also struggle to keep up with demand for the model X & S.

    electrek story

Guess my statement about talking to a major OEM about ramping up production might just have been true is Musk could get over his ego.

This could also totally explain the non-working FM and internet streaming from the car, needing to WiFi your smartphone to the car to get any music to play.

    Interesting :scratchchin:

Anywho, the big question here is what can Tesla do, realistically, to address this bottleneck in production? All these claims of 200K per year seem like pure fodder and a pipe dream unless something changes soon.

I do wonder if to achieve 200k a year they will have to subcontract out some of the assembly, maybe to a supplier like Magna or Valmet.   Though I have no idea how much of their assembly line processes is compatible with normal auto manufacturing processes...

Their problem is the automation that they expected to be ready by now still is having issues. Once they have everything running properly I don't see how they would project incorrectly. As of now, the assembly line just isn't in motion..

Here is the real issue that Tesla needs to deal with: Despite the fact that they awakened a renewed interest in the long forgot EV car market.. (yes.. EVs were around in the beginning of automotive) in which at one point commanded about 30% of the U.S. market before the into of the mass produced Ford Model T and even more lethal to the cause.. GM inventing (thru Kettering) the electric/auto starter.. Tesla needs to realize that its WOW EFFECT is dissipating. In truth, the only thing that Tesla truly has going for it is that it currently has a captive market on 0-60 times and sportier styling. That's it. The Bolt actually is a better offering all around if for no other reason than it has CHEVY/GM as its backer. That's approx 200 dealerships to have your car serviced versus 3000. Add in the fact that in one go.. one go.. the Bolt has better range by  economic standards versus it's closest competitor at Tesla in price... the Model 3 and a similar 0-60 jump. 6.3 vs 5.6.

Back to the WOW effect.. at this point Chevy.. Ford.. Toyota.. are all toying with Tesla.. and if they truly wanted to could instantly SHUT THAT COMPANY DOWN in terms of market capability. GM just announced that it will be putting out another 20 in 5 years and 2 more in 18 months. Consider the possibilities. Looking at the Bolt numbers.. Volt numbers.. all GM would really have to do is produce a... Lacrosse... or Regal sized EV, with similar amenities  and the Model S is put out to pasture. And really. Do U think that they don't already have a few running around with fake tailpipes tacked on to fool the paparazzi?

@Cmicasa the Great Seems wall street is loosing it's patience and the luster of Musk as there are multiple stories out today about being time to reevaluate Tesla as it trades 67 times yearly earnings.

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/the-truth-is-catching-up-with-tesla/ar-AAt1RxU?li=BBnbfcL

Truth is catching up to Musk and Tesla. If they cannot start building in volume by the end of the year as they are burning through 1 billion a quarter with 20 billion in debt already and still no solar roofs other than executives who got them after the solar city purchase of his cousins company,

Tesla could end up caput since the other OEMs are now focused and paying attention.

exactly @dfelt. Real talk. When Tesla was the only game in town things were cool. Now the big boys are jumping on as we all knu they would. GM, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Honda etc.. the question remains is WTF is FCA in all of this? Are they holding out for the niche of ICEs when all other makers are firmly planted in EV?

This way of the future... GM just acquired Strobe for the LIDAR tech.. to augment and help its acquisition of Cruise Automation.

Where did this "200K" volume number come from? Did Tesla state that would be this year's production?
I'm looking more strongly (at the decidedly less likely) "500K" rate for next year, which begins in 12 weeks.

My prediction : Tesla will not be able to produce 200K NEXT year.

and that was a big issue from the on-set. As I stated before.. by the time the Model 3 gets up and running.. Ford and GM will have already started building more "mainstream" looking EVs. Seriously..looking at the Model 3 is it really worth all the Hoopla? I'm talking about a vehicle that goes 220 miles on a charge for $35K or 310 miles for a WHOPPING $9K more.. and looks like an uglier version of the Lexus IS and Porsche Panamera mashed up together.

I call on Chevy to convert its Malibu Hybrid into a complete EV.. so we can have a better looking Model 3 competitor

A normcore EV would be a game changer.  I wonder if the Malibu platform can support the EV hardware, as opposed to something purpose-built as an EV like the Bolt. Ford has the Focus Electric, but something like a Malibu EV if it had a good range and price could be a hit...

We have seen every auto maker have some bad parts and being only 100 affected out of the first 10,000 produced is nothing to worry about. GM came out and admitted the issue and has stated they have contacted all owners and are fixing the issue.

I am not so sure Tesla has done this.

GM has admitted to Autoblog that a number of it earliest Bolts have battery issues that could lead to "unexpected loss of propulsion." The good news is that only around one percent of the 10,000-or-so Bolts -- so, approximately 100 -- on the road are affected. -From Fuckin AUGUST

GM makes an EV car.. its the 2017 NA Car of the Year.. 2017 Green Car of the Year.. 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year.. selling like hotcakes in terms of EVs.

and the whole f@#kin point of the thread is that the Model 3 IS NOT AVAILABLE:blink:

Are you talking about the Bolt? That's like a hybid of a suv/car/van thing. It sure as heck isn't a "car". The Volt is a car but it's a plug-in.

I'm not hating one bit but the Bolt is ugly compared to the Model 3. Had GM went with a genuine CAR I'd likely like it a heck of a lot more. Its tech and abilities are awesome. It just doesn't look very good.

By the way, it's easy to click the top link of a google search. I wouldn't say the top link was "Googles hit heart out" but you don't like to hear anything negative about The Mother Ship...

Tesla needs to realize that its WOW EFFECT is dissipating. In truth, the only thing that Tesla truly has going for it is that it currently has a captive market on 0-60 times and sportier styling.

you forgot both 'prestige' and 'aspirational' but as a cadillac owner, you'd be unfamiliar with either.

I would never consider a Tesla owner an Idiot since they are some very wealthy people. Yet with that said, I would also not consider them to be always the smartest as auto owners. Tesla is like Apple. They both have their prestige and aspiration by a select group of folks.

Just like us Cadillac owners enjoy the prestige, aspirational and rich heritage of Cadillac.

Clearly to think Cadillac does not have that even a little has to make one think twice about where you are coming from. <_<

Every company get a tarnished rep, some die, some come back. it does not mean that there is no prestige or aspiration to be had.

Personally, Apple to me builds crappy products that force you to live their way only and from what I have seen of the Prestige and Aspiration crowd, also some of the most common Lemmings in the universe. Tesla is the same in many regards.

I will credit Tesla with at least finally finding a solid way to move us beyond the ICE Auto. Thank you Musk for that.

Now let's look to see who builds the EV better. My bet is on GM.

lol you know what product forces you to live their way only? a chevy bolt... because where are you going to charge it if you don't want to be homestuck?

tesla lets you traverse the continent east-to-west with super fast charging stations, whenever you want.

There are charging stations across the country for the Bolt, including fast charging. You are trolling just a little too hard today

Neat app. I see the Hyatt about a mile from me has a charger, as does a Dunkin' Donuts a couple miles away.  (Not that I need one, but I'll admit to being EV-curious)

do they charge a vehicle in a half hour? no.

i used a 'fast charger' with my tesla and it took forever. the only positive was that it was near a denny's so i could go inside and remind myself why i live on a coast.

    • If you are in a hotel and there is a (laptop) safe in the room, you'd probably use it for your laptop if leaving the room and/or hotel for a while. If you are in a hotel without one, what do you do (with your laptop)?  I often have them pass on room service ... that's for sure.  It would be beneficial for some of you to weigh in.
    • Random thoughts: Saw many German imports sporting medium enamel grey exteriors with darker red leather interiors in affluent desert communities and this combination looks nice. Was following a recent Dodge Challenger on the freeway tonight and I love that rear light bar, so I think it's the best looking of the 3 pony car rehashes. Saw an immaculate black 2007 or 2008 Cadillac DTS on the freeway tonight and they still look good, even timeless. I happened onto a dog video last night and it had "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan in it.  I read about him and he once ran a "Dog Psychology Center."  Ha. He does not have a degree in psychology, animal husbandry, or anything.  Then, L.A. douchebag groupthink shines through.  The list of celebs who used him (one refers or copies another celeb) is lengthy.  Remember when celebs were snapping up Priuses, almost as if to make a statement? About 40% of my music collection consists of African-American artists. I  notice this as I surf Bluetooth. Some of my friends joke that I was Black in a previous life.  Come on.  Some white artists - even hard rockers - are more starched than many Black artists ... smooth, earthy, sassy, passionate, gravelly, and/or powerful ... that's what I like in music and they put out some great musical tracks.   Happy Friday.

The only think I would do differently is dice up the garlic and onions more, so they blend into the pasta better and use a variety of cheeses, like Mozzarella and Smokey Gouda plus the parmesan. • I love BBQing, but with my Knee recovery, I am not up to being outside in my BBQ area and cooking ribs the right way slow and steady for a fall off the bone rib. I have been looking online at other options and yes, I love Dr. Pepper way more than Coke or Pepsi, in fact I cannot think of the last time I had a coke or pepsi.  Dr. Pepper slow cooked ribs, then finished in the oven. Seems like a good Idea to try. What do you guys think? Slow Cooker Dr. Pepper BBQ Ribs - Only 3 Ingredients!
