    Meet The 2013 Lexus LS

After teasing us with a photo last week, Lexus has unveiled the new LS sedan at a event in San Francisco, CA last night. The old saying of "the more things change, the more the stay the same" plays very well into in the LS.

Starting with the exterior, the new LS carries the same profile as the old one, but Lexus did make some changes to bring it line with their current lineup. That includes a redesigned front end that includes Lexus' spindle grille and a set of new LED headlights, and a changed back end which includes a new trunk lid and a new bumper.

Underneath the sheet metal, the LS' wheelbase has grown by one inch for the short- and long-wheelbase models. Also, the LS sees increased body rigidity, new frequency-dependent shock absorbers, revised steering, and braking systems.

Engines are also a carryover. The base 4.6L V8 (found in the LS 460, LS 460 L, and LS 460 F-Sport), gains 6 HP for RWD models (386 HP and 367 lb-ft), while AWD models see a gain of 3 HP and 3 lb-ft of torque (360 HP and 347 lb-ft). The 4.6L V8 goes through an eight-speed automatic. The LS 600h L engine is unchanged. A 5.0L V8 engine paired to a set electric motors deliver a combined output of 438 HP.

Fuel economy for the two engines are,

    • 4.6L V8 RWD: 16 City/24 Highway/19 Combined
    • 4.6L V8 AWD: 16 City/23 Highway/18 Combined
    • 5.0L V8 Hybrid: 19 City/23 Highway/20 Combined

Lexus has also fitted Drive Mode Select, which allows the driver to choose from three settings: Eco, Normal and Sport. Those who order LS with air suspension get two more settings: Comfort and Sport S+.

Inside the LS, Lexus redesigned the instrument panel and includes a standard 12.3-inch navigation screen. The 12.3 screen uses Lexus' remote touch, the mouse like controller to move around. The LS also gets Lexus Enform application which adds Pandora, Bing, Yelp and more.

On the safety front, the LS gets a two new systems: Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Blind Spot Monitor uses rear millimeter-wave radar to monitor blind spots at speeds above 10 mph. Rear Cross Traffic Alert uses similar tech to warn a driver is a vehicle is coming while backing up.

Finally, we get to the LS 460 F-Sport. Teased back last week, the F-Sport brings a unique front end with a mesh grille, larger cooling openings, black grille surround, round fog lamps, heavily bolstered seats, paddle shifters and aluminum trim. Underneath, the F-Sport gets a set of 19-inch wheels which hide Brembo six-piston caliper brakes, a lowered, sports-tuned suspension, and a Torsen limited-slip differential on the RWD model.

We'll learn pricing and the on sale date later on.

Lexus LS Flagship Luxury Sedans Redesigned For 2013 Model Year

San Francisco, Calif. – July 30, 2012 - With its dynamic handling, bold new design and superior craftsmanship, the 2013 LS flagship models hail the future of the Lexus brand as it embarks on its third decade in the premium luxury category. While retaining many of the qualities that have defined Lexus for more than 20 years, the LS reaches new heights with an exciting blend of beautiful design, modern refinement and advanced technology.

The 2013 LS line-up includes the LS 460, LS 460L, LS 600hL hybrid, and the first-ever LS 460 F SPORT. LS 460 and LS 460L are available in RWD and AWD. The LS Hybrid is available with a full-time AWD system.

The all-new LS 460 F SPORT combines a more aggressive exterior with a unique sport interior featuring F SPORT seats with larger bolsters, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters and genuine aluminum trim. With a sport tuned air suspension that has been lowered 0.4 inches, a Torsen® limited slip rear differential (RWD model), Brembo six-piston caliper brakes, and 19” forged wheels with summer or all-season tires, the LS F SPORT promises to be the most engaging LS ever.

The entire 2013 LS lineup is refined with dynamic, fresh styling that reflects the bold new face of Lexus. The aggressive spindle grille gives the new LS a greater road presence and stronger brand identity while heralding a significant improvement in driving dynamics, responsiveness and handling.

Increased body rigidity enhances stability, and allows for a more comfortable ride. Pitch and bounce control has been enhanced by adopting new frequency dependent shock absorbers, resulting in an even flatter, road-hugging ride. Revised steering offers improvements in accuracy and turn-in response. The braking system has been adjusted for more immediate power and greater pedal feel.

Available safety enhancements include the industry’s most advanced Pre-Collision Safety (A-PCS) system with Collision Avoidance Assist. This system is designed to assist the driver in avoiding or mitigating collisions with vehicles and pedestrians under a wide range of city and highway speeds. At speeds lower than 24 miles per hour, this technology helps the LS to avoid accidents by automatically bringing the LS to a full stop.

The driver-focused interior integrates modern refinement with intuitive technology. The Advanced Illumination System (AIS), an all-LED interior lighting system, illuminates to greet the approaching occupants and then fades in sequence with the vehicle starting procedure.

The new, available Lexus Climate Concierge offers maximum comfort for every LS occupant. The customizable system uses multiple sensors to automatically regulate not only the temperature of the cabin, but also the climate control seats and the heated steering wheel, quickly bringing each occupant to their preferred temperature.

The standard navigation system is displayed on a 12.3-inch, split-screen, high-resolution multi-media display which is large enough to support simultaneous viewing of a large map display and other vehicle functions.

A next-generation Remote Touch, with one-push confirmation, is standard on all models and enables smooth, intuitive control of many vehicle systems. The Remote Touch allows the user to operate the climate, audio, phone controls, navigation system and more. The screen menus are selected with a controller conveniently located within easy reach on the center console. A number of well-placed buttons on the steering wheel and instrument panel enable the direct control of frequently used functions (e.g. temperature setting, fan speed, preset audio stations, etc.)

Lexus Enform® with App Suite leverages the customers’ mobile phone technology to provide a new level of connectivity and information management. Users can conduct local searches through Bing™, utilize voice-enabled apps to make restaurant reservations through OpenTable®, get movie tickets via MovieTickets.com, tap into internet radio, including Pandora® or iHeartRadio, search business reviews on Yelp and check in on Facebook places. A one-year trial subscription is included for the App Suite.

    Chassis/Body/Suspension/Brakes/Tires

    • Numerous stabilizing fins help the LS to be one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in its segment with a coefficient drag of 0.26.
    • Laser screw welding, body adhesives and other structural reinforcements increase rigidity and enhance stability, steering feel and handling.

Is it me or is this just a boring car even with the updated style language to fit into the rest of the Predator family?

People who buy these cars must be like British humor, dry dry dry.

    Blaw :puke:

    a 5 liter hybrid that gets 30mpg?

I get 30mpg out of a Hemi on the highway.

The Lexus hybrid has more gears, more cams, and is probably heavier, though.

It might have some cool technology, but the passion is NOT there. It is dull, boring, dry, dead on arrival in the passion sense.

For the hybrid, 19 mpg city, 23 highway, and 30 mpg combined does not make sense. Can that be 20 mpg combined? Can it be that bad?

Yea, I think it is supposed to be 20mpg average which totaly sucks but then look at the bland boring car. Maybe the buyers are too hung up on a name to care.

It's 20 MPG combined, somehow when I was writing this story this morning I read it at 30. Its been corrected.

It could be worse. Drive a 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and you were lucky to get 18 MPG combined.

Vehicles like the LS600h L and ActiveHybrid X6 use their hybrid powertrains to make more power while delivering somewhat better fuel economy, at least in theory.

The majority of luxury hybrids only really see a minor or no improvement in fuel economy, while seeing a large increase in power.

This looks like a mid-cycle refresh and not a new car. The exterior hardly changed, and they basically changed the dash design and some interior bits. And I don't know if Lexus noticed, but The S550 has over 500 lb-ft, quite a bit more than 367 lb-ft of this car, the F-sport seems not so sporty. The S550 gets 25 mpg also. For them to build a "sport" version of this car is a joke, this is a snooze mobile selling on badge alone at this point, as this customer base dies off they are in trouble, just like the Town Car and Deville of 15 years ago.

On the hybrid front, if the Mercedes E300 Bluetec hybrid is estimated at over 50 mpg. It's possible to have a fuel efficient luxury hybrid, but most are just marketing ploys and don't provide enough mpg gain to justify the price.

    • Very cool read and video on how Tires are made. Where Are Michelin Tires Made And Who Owns The Brand?
    • This is an interesting read. Korea is the only country with EVs that are head-to-head with China and in some ways better. This nanotube technology will allow Korea to move way farther forward than the U.S. in automotive options. Advances in carbon nanotube applications enhance battery dry process
    • I got a better idea for Trump: Instead of Canada becoming the 51st state, Id prefer for the US to become Canada's 4rth Territory.  Not even province status. In order for the United Stated Territories of America to become a full blown province, Americans would have to prove their allegiance and loyalty to the Royalty of King Charles the Third since Canada is a Federal Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy of the British Commonwealth realm.  Trump's job and title would be a perfect revival for an old tradition.  King Charles the Third's court jester. And we could throw him a bone...and have a playing card named after him since he likes those kinds of things
    • Im glad to get that off my chest
    • This is what Andy Palmer said, the dude of what the article in the link is about.     "Hybrids are a road to hell. They are a transition strategy, and the longer you stay on that transition, the less quickly you ramp up into the new world," Palmer said. "If you just delay transitioning to EVs by diluting it with hybrids then you are more uncompetitive for longer, and you allow the Chinese to continue to develop their market and their leadership. I honestly think it's a fool's errand," he added.   And him being the dude that helped engineer the Nissan Leaf and was later the dude in charge of Nissan's EV department, I am 100% in agreement with him.  And I would also like to add: The Chinese government pushed and pushed hard for EVs.  Pushed hard not only on the global stage but MOSTLY got ALL Chinese people ON BOARD with EVs.  They had several reasons to do so.  China has lots and lots of minerals and important ingredients to make said batteries. An essential part of EV transition.  But most IMPORTANTLY, China WANTS to REPLACE the USA for being the defacto country  in political, social, economical influence in the world that the USA enjoyed since the end of WW2 in 1945.  And since they knew they lacked behind in ebery metric that would push them to that status, they had only one move to make. It was a Hail Mary pass, but kit was to dominate in the the tech world and it happened to be in the automobile realm. EVs. And while China was seeking to dominate in this arena, and CAREFULLY nurtured it, the USA phoqued themselves over.  Idiot Americans were fooled to believe ALL the negative commentary on EVs. Uneducated morons liked the drill baby drill commentary. Smart but greedy fools failed to see what was coming next and failed even further to see the threat that is China and ITS technological breakthroughs.  ALL from morons that had biased reasons to be anti-EV. From the Joe Rogans and Alex Jones of the world that thrive from clicks for the podcast youtube and other shytty platforms to anti-EV biases from Big Oil.  And lastly, stupid politicians that failed American citizens in different decades from keeping Americans poor and stupid by not giving them educations. By PURPOSELY DEFUNDING the American school system, by PURPOSELY lying to them on DIFFERENT subjects and while these American politicians were greedily looking to make America into a fascist, oligarch world, they failed to see and acknowledge the OTHER threats the world was giving to the US OTHER than the war threats.  The technological warfare.   Exactly the OPPOSITE of what the Chinese regimes were on about EVs.  And if Trump decides to cut EV subsidies, even of only to allow Tesla to sell, the Chinese are building European factories to build EVs there. Slowly.  They are FLOODING the market with Chinese EVs as we speak in Europe.  The next step is to flood North America with Chinese EVs. The starting point IS Mexico.  If one is educated, one could see the disaster that is to come for GM, Ford.  Stellantis is going to get the disaster first in Europe.  Chinese EVs are going to flood Mexico.  INEXPENSIVE Chinese EVs.  Then WILL come the factories in Mexico.  So much for the "NOBODY WANTS EVs" rhetoric that the uneducated, wrongfully informed Americans (and Canadians to some degree) keep on spewing...   Its really IS a big deal. I SEE that rhetoric play about the failure of VW and Stellantis and even GM when these fools squeal about how they are failing because they have put all their monies on EVs.  The thing is, they didnt put their monies FAST enough on EVs and also concetrated on producing ICEVs when they should have just NIXED them waaaay before.  Of course that is Monday morning quarterbacking from me as I say that, but I ALSO saw the writing on the wall about EVs being THE future.  Had Americans NOT been LIED to about this whole thing about scare tactics about EVs, GM and Ford would have ALL the working EVs RIGHT NOW not ONLY to shut down Tesla, but to even shut down Chinese EVs. Elon Musk could have TAKEN China ALL to himself if he was 5% the visionary he thinks he is.   But he was too busy STILL selling us on colonizing Mars...  Whatever happened to that super loop thing anyway?  Yeah...a billion dollar boondoggle that had everybody fooled.  Chinese politicians, engineers and all around smart folk must be STILL laughing at all the gullible Americans and greedy fools that the US has churned out the last 15 years...    But hey...   Now lets keep on shopping because its the Christmas season and we should all consume because its good for the economy while we wait for tariffs to hit us because Canada and Mexico reasons, because our eggs are expensive while we get fleeced by insurance companies but we dont want healthcare because communism and education education education but Ivy Leaguers  they too smart so they elitist but Democrats wanting to forgive student debt no good but keep on having insanely expensive school tuitions while other areas in the country and young folk not having ACCESS to an education while calling some countries of the world as shytehole countries while ALSO keep on having school shootings because teachers arent packing but also those shytehole country folk  are eating the dogs and they are eating the cats.
