A Number of German Automakers Recall 630,000 Diesel Vehicles

Most German automakers are recalling A number of diesel vehicles to rework engine computer software

A number of German automakers are recalling a number of diesel vehicles to tweak the engine management software to produce less nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Reuters reports that Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Porsche, and Volkswagen have agreed to recall 630,000 diesel vehicles to tweak engine management software.

The software in question can turn off emission treatment systems to improve engine performance and increase the services interval. Is it legal? Yes, thanks to a legal loophole that allows automakers to throttle back emission treatment systems in certain situations to protect engines. This was discovered in various European emission tests.

In light of the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal, environmental groups and regulators aren't too pleased with automakers using this loophole. In fact, the German motor transport authority (KBA) has questioned whether this loophole could be fully justified.

OUCH and Diesel will take another big hit, Expect billions more to be spent by the Euro auto companies to deal with this mess.

I think we will see a decline in Diesel even in Europe as auto companies look to Hybrid  and long term to EVs to meet government regulations.

Diesel cars could end up dead in the next 5-10 years.  Hybrid and plug in is getting better and better.  Once electrification gets more wide spread in the 2020s, the diesel car will be going away.  So then you wonder about diesel SUVs and pick ups like the Ram or Colorado.  I would guess they would move to a plug-in hybrid set up too.

I really think the Technology has taken another big leap in terms of hybrids.  The 2016 Prius gained ten miles per gallon over the previous car, the new Volt is an order of magnitude better, and more car makers are bringing these mainstream. We thought about a Cruze Diesel to replace the TDI we are selling back to VW, but the Hybrids are much better.

    • So do I. From 1 to 5 cups a day. I drink coffee a lot less often. Teas is good and good for you, with white tea over green tea over black tea if rank ordered.  Even black tea has benefits.  Earl Grey is my favorite type, and the bergamot in it makes it among the healthier black teas.

    • Actually they are not as heavy as you would think and the Class 8 industry is already moving to electric trailers as the weight of the trailer does not get that much heavier but seriously reduces fuel consumption in traditional diesel trucks and reduces emissions. Fuel consumption in traditional Diesel trucks reduces by 36.3% https://newatlas.com/automotive/range-energy-electrified-trailer/ For consumers we already have options in this market: eStream Concept Travel Trailer | Airstream Electrifying Adventure 7 All Electric Trailers Hitting the Market | RV Obsession I think in time especially using in-wheel hub motors, I can see pretty much all trailers having motors and either using the power from the towing auto battery pack or having a small pack that helps to drive the trailer motors.

What Honda’s Solid-State Battery Breakthrough Tells About The Future Of EV Tech The fact that Honda like Hyundai has actual Prototype production assembly lines up and running ahead of Toyota, Mercedes, BMW, VW, etc. would tend to indicate they could deliver solid-state battery tech sooner to EVs than others.
    • That sounds like such an expensive trailer configuration, a trailer with massive batteries and motor(s).. That is no better than an HD with their diesel setups now. While the idea seems good, the price of something like that just sounds like looking for a problem to solve instead of the current setup.  At this point, we'd be talking about a 10,000lb truck and an empty trailer weighing 7,000lbs. That's pushing the better part of 20,000lb before even adding anything to the trailer. A basic single car trailer is already close to 2500lb.
