    Marchionne Gives His Merger Plans A Rest, Says Next Deal Could Happen After His Retirement

      FCA's CEO Stops Talking About Mergers, Focuses On the Five-Year Plan

    FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne is giving it a rest when it comes to merger talk. Speaking with Bloomberg, Marchionne says he will focus on growing FCA through 2018. After 2018, Marchionne could retire from the company.

     

    Last year, Marchionne campaigned publicly for a merger of FCA and General Motors. GM's board looked at his proposal in the summer and rejected it. After this, Marchionne backtracked somewhat, saying the merger could generate $30 billion a year in cash.

     

    But now, Marchionne says any chances of a possible GM merge are done.

     

    “I met Mary Barra less than a month ago in Washington. I don’t think I will have another coffee with her. It won’t happen again in the future.”

     

    Of course, the talk of merging with GM must have brought some other companies out of the woodwork? Marchionne explained that he did get proposals, but were deemed not very attractive. He still believes a big merger is possible, but "it will be someone else's duty."

     

    Now with the merger stuff mostly out of his system, Marchionne will focus on finishing the current five-year plan for the company. His overall goal is to increase global deliveries to seven million units a year by 2018. To achieve this, FCA will invest around $52 billion for new products.

    So the investment will come from raping the american auto lines and investing in the stupid italian lines that are crap to begin with and should not be resurrected.

     

    In regards to the merger, I am sure Mary told him to pound sand and stop the nonsense. GM has no interest in FCA unless they want to sell Jeep. They might buy Jeep only.

    I don't think they would even buy Jeep.  They would be better off giving GMC some unique off-road product.  i honestly don't see GM buying anything anytime soon wince that is part of what got them in their previous issue.  Also, the Hummer project didn't exactly turn out all that great.  The whole idea of a merger was ignorant anyway.  they don't need a merger, they have tech and new platforms they just need to put the product where it is needed (Dodge, Ram, Chrysler, and Jeep) and send Fiat back home.  I do think Alfa has a possibility though and it gives them a high end to offer new tech that can trickle down to the rest (ala Cadillac and Chevy).

    Exactly, they could use the Colorado/Canyon platform and give it all the goodies of the ZR2 concept.  Maybe pricey, but I have no doubt they would sell everone they could make.

      Tesla needs to die. Elon Musk went from being the Henry Ford of our generation (automotive) to being the henry Ford of our generation (raging racist and anti semite). And 1978 was another whole year and generation. I had a 1978, it was a cool car but not as cool as the 66-67, 68-72 or 73-77. The beginning of a long, slow irreversible decline for GM.  Still loved my 78, which was sadly totalled in an accident. (Not my fault!). I still have a dream every few months where I go down to the garage and that car is still there.      He is one of the best thinkers of our generation.    Everytime I do actually see someone driving a cybertruck, I imagine how moronic they must be

      A lot of interesting factoids ... The number of plants producing the mid-1960s Impala were numerous, including 2 in SoCal (Van Nuys and South Gate) and 2 in Canada (Oshawa and St.-Therese).  Imagine that ... working on the line with a Francophone in a herringbone cap who breaks out a baguette for his snack break.  Then, other plants:  up in Detroit, Atlanta, St. Louis, and the Arlington TX (Dallas) plant that made a lot of Cutlasses. Engines were varied: 230 in line 6 (not the 250 yet), V8s like 283, 327, and a 409 that gave way to the 396.  I notice the absence of the 307 at this point. The great 350 came a few years later. - - - - - As far as Cutlass going from 1976 to 1977, they did a few stupid things, yet may have sold even more of them: - the waterfall grille up front got busier, thus uglier - they got rid of the spherical vents on the right side of the dash and made them rectangular as well - they went from a more traditional burgundy (for that type of color choice) interior to a red interior (called firethorn) and it was obnoxious  - they slimmed down the bucket seats in the Salon coupe quite a bit - drum roll:  the loss leader base engine went from an inherently  balanced 250 in line 6 in an uncrowded engine bay to an "odd firing" 231 V6 (in its last year as "odd firing") and the area in the back of the engine bay around the engine itself was crowded. They should have left that one alone.  No one should have had a nicely equipped Brougham model with an engine that had a faint shudder at idle. - and, of course, they raised the price a fair bit
